Honeywell presents fire detection innovation at leading Rail Industry Fire Safety Event

H

oneywell delivered a speaker session on advanced aspiration smoke detection technology at the Rail Industry Fire Association AGM in York, UK (19th June). Tim Checketts, Business Development Manager for Honeywell Fire Safety, outlined how FAAST (Fire Alarm Aspiration Sensing Technology), can help transportation facilities overcome traditional fire detection issues by removing false alarms, enhancing safety and reducing maintenance. Transportation facilities such as underground stations and depots present some of the most challenging fire detection environments; high levels of brake dust, combined with environmental fluctuations make most fire detection methods prone to costly and disruptive false alarms. High footfalls and long network operational hours demand solutions that offer both the earliest, most accurate fire detection and simplified

maintenance. Remote system monitoring and diagnostics are also essential in allowing issues to be rectified before they become a reality. Tim Checketts, Business Development Manager for Honeywell Fire Safety, explains how transportation facilities can overcome fire detection issues through the application of new, advanced aspiration smoke detection (ASD) detection technologies. “Its inherent design - featuring a monitoring device and a sampling pipe network - makes ASD technology more effective than contemporary detection methods, but many systems are still prone to false alarms in high dust/dirt environments. FAAST redefines the concept of ASD with ground-breaking filtration techniques, which distinguish smoke from all other particulates, removing false alarms; FAAST is proven in leading underground station networks globally as well harsh environments like heavy industrial, recycling

plants, tobacco processing and power generation. Environmental fluctuation is also no issue for FAAST; the device features an innovative Acclimate Mode, which allows the unit to continuously adjust to changes in the environment. “FAAST provides the earliest and most accurate fire detection available and another key benefit is that FAAST only requires 25% of the maintenance of comparable solutions. FAAST is also optimised for flexible system integration with MODBUS and features advanced remote configuration, monitoring and diagnostics with automatic status updates delivered via email to smart phones or mobile devices).”

Premier Waste (UK) PLC removes false fire alarms with Honeywell’s FAAST aspiration smoke detector

W

aste recycling facilities are some of the most challenging for fire detection systems; high dust and moisture can create frequent false fire alarms, causing unnecessary downtime. Increased fire risks demand the most accurate and reliable fire detection, ensuring there is more time to implement counter measures and limit fire damage. A growing number of waste recycling facilities sites are choosing to implement next generation aspiration smoke detection (ASD) technologies, because of the ability to remove false fire alarms and provide the earliest and most accurate smoke detection. One of the latest sites to adopt Honeywell’s FAAST aspiration system is Premier Waste (UK) PLC, in Birmingham, UK. This 200,000 ft2 facility which recycles construction and commercial waste, including packaging, was previously experiencing false fire alarms every other day using

16 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

traditional fire detection methods and wanted to implement a more stable solution to increase site safety. Premier Waste (UK) PLC’s Operations Director, Wayne Clark, comments on the benefits of using FAAST. “Today you need to ensure you are doing all you can to exceed insurance company guidelines... With FAAST we now have no disruptions when testing and maintenance is taking place, no site downtime from false alarms or faults and no third party costs to keep the device maintained... FAAST is great because it auto-learns the environment and can be used across the whole plant it remains stable even in fluctuating conditions.” Tim Checketts, Business Manager for Honeywell Fire Safety, said: “Recycling and waste management safety managers have a tough remit; fire risks are high, insurance requirements

are stringent and the high dust/moisture environment is problematic for most fire detectors. 24/7 operation demands enhanced fire detection reliability and no process downtime from false fire alarms. Premier Waste (UK) PLC managed to overcome all historic detection challenges, remove false alarms and achieve the highest detection accuracy, affordably, using FAAST. urglary is a traumatic experience and can leave deep emotional scars on property owners. However Pune headquartered Security Products Vendor and Solution Provider, Zebion, vouches modern technology can make protection against burglary effortless. Following the earlier introduction of their Intrusion Defense System named Argoz in February, Zebion has now launched an improved line-extension called Argoz Grand, which combines the essential facets of instant intrusion detection with remote internet-based surveillance. In a major convention held earlier in Rajkot, comprising over one hundred Electronics Shoppe owners and Security Solution providers, Zebion’s Chief Marketing Officer Saurabh Dey, unveiled Argoz Grand and a slew of other related devices designed to keep burglars out and empower home,

office and shop owners to have complete peace of mind. By installing a modern intrusion defense system such as this, any propertyshall comeunder round-the-clock vigilance, which can be supervised overa cell phone or tablet. The earlier version of Argoz, inaugurated in February by Pune’s Mayor and prominent jeweler FatechandRanka, had the ability to instantly dial-out to the property owner’s phone as soon as intrusion happens. This new model goes even further by grabbing a snapshot of the intruder and sending it via specially built app to the phone. In a demonstration to seminar participants, Zebion’s technical team explained that Argoz Grand had both - sophisticated motion sensors and also an inbuilt high-definition camera. Technical Manager, Prakash Shinde explained to the audience that “like all members of the Argoz Family, Argoz Grand’s key feature is resistance to false alarming. The device is only triggered by humans of a certain body mass; no alarm or action is triggered by innocuous objects like pets, rodents, birds or lizards”. When asked by the electronics trading community about the public’s response to Argoz thus far, Dey explained, “we have been overwhelmed by the positive response in Maharashtra and the South; we are now happy to serve the Gujarat market through our regional distributors”. Zonal Sales Manager, Dinesh Soni, explained “The first member of the Argoz family of products, called Argoz Regular, has been mostly appreciated by store owners, who switch the devise

I am certainthe new Argoz Grand will be favored by the same audience, plus we will see heavyadoption by home owners, who will use it not only for intrusion defense but also to watch over children, domestic workers, pets or the elderly. Similarly, businessmen can use it to remotely monitor their office, warehouse or workshop”. In addition to Argoz Grand, Zebion also introduced a number of otherfuturistic surveillance & security products for the Gujarat market. This includes face recognition technology based access control systems, biometric scanners, grain free digital surveillance cameras, special night vision cameras & face capturing cameras. KetanDoshi, MD of Version Computers, Zebion’s authorized distributor in Rajkot stated“what is wonderful about Zebion’s range of security products is that they all work synergistically.

Argoz Grand handles both intrusion alert and remote IP surveillance

By combining a range of products we can provide holistic security to any environment – commercial, residential or warehouse”. To this Dey added, “Our overarching vision is ‘SampoornaSuraksha’ (Comprehensive Security), and thus our continuallywidening range is designed to meet every need, or to remedyevery possible vulnerability”. Argoz Grand may also be used

simply as a remote camera that can be remotely controlled by a handheld phone or tablet. It has 3550panning angle and two-way communication audio. Shinde explained that in cases of violent crime the ability to hear the remote party was both critical and valuable. Himanshu Ajmera, a security products retailer from Rajkot who attended the convention said, “I was very impressed with the main seminar and the launch of these appreciable security devices. While most people only speak of all-inclusive security, Zebion seems to have done considerable homework behind their dream of SampoornaSuraksha - and I think the dream is now converting to reality”. Dey outlined that Zebion was actively educating dealers and solution providers across Gujarat to implement their newly released products (like Argoz Grand) and spread awareness among the general public about better and deeper means of residential and commercial security. Zebion currently has retail, service and support partners in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Bhavnagar, apart from Rajkot. For more information, Website: www.zebion.in

FACE TO FACE

“Workers are not only voluntarily embracing safety but also making safer decisions on their own” Mr. Kamal Jha, General Manager India, Honeywell Industrial Safety (PPE & Gas Detection)

Q. What are the factors driving growth in the PPE market? A. number of factors are driving growth in the PPE market. Increasing regulation and the resulting improvements in workplace practices are a key feature, as is the continued and significant shifts in worker attitudes and behaviour toward occupational safety. We are moving from corporate cultures which dictate the adoption and usage of PPE to cultures in which workers not only voluntarily embrace safety but also make safer decisions on their own. At the most basic level, driving that evolution are advancements in two key areas: technology and training. Technology has made what was once uncomfortable, comfortable. Product designs utilise new materials and technologies that improve the end-user experience. Take safety glasses — they’re now high-tech and incredibly light, featuring streamlined frames and designer lenses. Workers want to wear them and do — even outside of work — just to look stylish. Another example is fall protection harnesses which are now lightweight, comfortable, and breathable. Hearing protection can be high-fidelity. It can even feature intelligent 44 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

communication systems. We like to say that the best PPE can’t protect a worker if he won’t wear it. The good news is that these technology and design changes are motivating workers to want to wear their PPE. Training in one form or another has always existed, however there is a new emphasis on behaviour-based training so that a worker not only knows how to do a task correctly and safely, but is internally motivated to want to do it safely. It becomes instinctive. Training therefore not only applies to getting a better understanding of the hazards a worker may get exposed to but also applies to what to do in a dangerous situation and the proper use of protective equipment to minimise or eliminate the potential harm. Q. What are the products offered by you in the safety products space? Honeywell Industrial Safety (HIS), is a leading global manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE) and gas detectors providing technical and innovative safety solutions through world class brands such as Honeywell®, Howard Leight®, Miller®, North®, KCL, Salisbury, Fibre-Metal®, RAE Systemsl® and BW Technologies®. www.ind-safety.com

HIS offers a full range of high quality PPE’s and gas detectors designed to provide head-to-toe solutions and risk monitoring equipment for the widest range of safety challenges. These include: eye and face protection such as safety glasses, face shields and goggles; hearing protection from earplugs and earmuffs to hearing conservation technology; respiratory protection including single-use masks, reusable respirators and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); fall protection such as full body harnesses, lanyards and fall limiters; gloves to protect against mechanical, cut resistant, chemical, thermal and electrical hazards; protective clothing from single-use products to reusable technical work wear; professional safety footwear; head protection such as hardhats as well as the widest range of stylish, comfortable, and high-performance PPE equipment along with fixed and portable gas detectors. Honeywell Industrial Safety has a global reach and 50 years of experience and knowledge in regulatory compliance, hazard identification, safety management, and PPE equipment selection and application. We therefore also offer a comprehensive set of training and education programs. We understand the safety manager’s needs and expectations for monitoring and improving the work environment

and work in partnership with them to enable them to build a culture where workers make safer choices on their own. Q. What are the key verticals that are having consistent demand for PPE products? Certain sectors and occupations are naturally more hazardous than others and put those that work in them at greater risk of injury. These include industries such as automotive, construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, utilities and mining. Effective PPE plays a critical role in safety and wellbeing for workers in these industries and Honeywell Industrial Safety is continually working on innovative protection solutions to meet their needs. Q. How standardization is helping to enhance the quality of products? Standardization is important and something that we welcome. However, as a leading global manufacturer of personal protective equipment solutions for over 50 years, partnering with safety managers to help them build an enduring culture of safety and developing high-quality, innovative solutions that meet their needs, as well as the appropriate regulations, has always been at the forefront of what we do.

Radware Uses New Fingerprinting Technology to Enhance Protection from Malicious Bot Attacks Device fingerprinting technology implemented in Radware’s Attack Mitigation System tracks end user behavior to accurately identify malicious devices

R

adware, a leading provider of application delivery and application security solutions for virtual and cloud data centers, has announced enhanced protection from threats posed by advanced bots through its Attack Mitigation System. This major enhancement will enable Radware in helping its customers track end user devices without the need for Internet Protocol (IP) address. Fingerprinting technology is used to precisely identify application users or website visitors who have a history of malicious behavior, and are often part of a botnet. RAH Infotech, India’s leading tech distribution major focused on Enterprise & Application Security and Application Delivery, is a distributor of Radware products in India. It adds value to its partners and resellers by distributing the entire product line of Radware which helps the customers through Load Balancing and ADoS (Advanced Denial of Service) & DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) protection. Mr. Ashok Kumar, MD and CEO, RAH Infotech says, “Bots generally plague businesses that conduct a high volume by exhausting application resources, scraping sensitive information from websites illegitimately and seeking vulnerabilities through application logic abuse. In order to protect applications from advanced bots or even collective human threats, website operators need more advanced user/ client identification that can detect and block illegitimate users.” Most security threats today use bots

and other traffic sources that can avoid detection by imitating user behavior, dynamically changing the source IP addresses or operating behind anonymous proxies and content delivery networks. To help combat this threat, Radware’s Attack Mitigation System has been enhanced with technology that can track and precisely detect malicious end user devices regardless of the source IP address. Mr. Nikhil Taneja, Country Manager and Regional Director, India and SAARC Radware says, “Device fingerprinting introduced in Radware’s Attack Mitigation System suitemakes use of proprietary trackingto generate device reputational profiles. These combined with other information based on behavioral history can be effective in the detection and mitigation of threats such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), intrusions and fraudsters alike.” Mr. Ben Desjardins, Director of Security Solutions, Radware says, “With the proliferation of devices driven by the Internet of Things (IoT) and users operating multiple mobile devices more than ever before, the challenge of device identification continues to increase exponentially. Our device fingerprinting technology gives online businesses a powerful tool in combating the threats posed by the difficulties of accurate device and user detection.” Device fingerprinting can also facilitate the identification of spiteful users accessing the Internet through Network Address Translation (NAT) devices that lead to many devices sharing the same

IP address, and anonymous proxy services that make it gruesome to block IPs without potentially blocking legitimate users/devices. Device fingerprinting further augments the Radware Attack Mitigation System, an award-winning solution to protect an enterprise’s infrastructure against network and application downtime, application vulnerability exploitation, malware spread, network anomalies, information theft and other types of attack. Industry Expectations from Safety Managers - Surface Coating Industry Mr. Indranath Chatterjee Chief Manager - EHS, Kansai Nerolac Paints Limited, Mumbai Email: indranathc@nerolac.com The paper highlights key findings of safety requirement in chemical industries. It is experienced that there is affirmative change in chemical industries but still long way to go. In Indian scenario, there is still lack of management support for implementation of “Safety First” culture. However, either Individual or organization, cannot just rest and let things slip. Safety Management has emerging trends, which are now key requirements to move above and beyond conventional Safety programs, process, and procedures. The paper provides the deficiencies and recommendations for improvement in Safety with respect to safety leader and management. This paper is an effort to present the expectation of industries from Safety Manager and highlights the approach to upgrade safety standards to exceed the requirements. KEYWORDS: Safety culture; Safety Manager role, Management role in Safety, Safety First, KYT 1. Introduction There is an important role safety plays in manufacturing facilities to ensure the company is maintaining the highest levels of output. Without safety as a top priority in manufacturing operations, you are sure to experience delays in getting your product finished and shipped to your customer, thus impacting, ultimately, your company’s bottom line. The significance of Safety in chemical industries has been a vital issue in achieving productivity at the lowest possible costs in the competitive world. Today’s Mantra of operational excellence passes through safety excellence. Chemicals are indispensable part of human life and have wide applications in our daily life. Despite their benefits, chemicals may, especially when misused, can cause adverse effects on human health and environmental integrity. In chemical manufacturing processes, there is a need to have precautionary approach and strict control measures to avoid any unfortunate incidents. Chemical industry is associated majorly with below mentioned www.ind-safety.com

hazards – • Fire and explosion hazards • Chemical storage • Exothermic reactions • Accumulation of static electricity • Health hazard from exposure of chemicals • Reactor pressurization • Chemical spillages • Manual movement during processes • Exposure to unguarded equipment’s, etc. 2. Concerns Regarding Implementation of Safety Most of the organization has already established the safety management system of their own requirement or as per OHSAS 18001. But still accident does happen. In most of the cases, safety management system is not effective and not visible. It remains on paper or just for legal compliance or certification. The main reasons for failure in safety management are failure to consider Safety matter equal to cost, quality and productivity. The attitude of management,

employee and safety manager towards safety are challenge to establish good safety culture in organization. Let’s take examples of generally attitudes of management towards safety. • Attitude of Top Management » Safety manager is responsible » I have no time for safety issue » I do not want any incidents » Limited budget for safety • Attitude of Middle Management » Safety is not my responsibility, I do not have time » Safety decrease productivity » I know all about safety » Safety officer do not have any work • Attitude of Safety Manager » I know everything about safety » I need not to know about production process » Implementation of safety project is not my responsibility » Avoid interaction with operator » IT system is just menace Above attitudes are hindrances to good

Continued from page no.67 safety culture of any organization. To implement good safety culture, it is necessary to have strong Safety management system. The behavioral issues and misconception about the safety are the major concern in the industries. The misconceptions prevent implementation of the safety program to aim zero accident philosophy. Generally the wrong perception in industry are • Accident will happen • Safety professional can keep worker & plant safe • Enforcing legal compliance improve safety! • Low accident rates indicate safety program are working well • Investigation of accident to find out root cause will improve safety! • Awareness training improves safety. 3. Changing Role of Safety “The philosophy of managing safety has changed. All accidents are preventable. Every task will be done safely. No one will be injured just to do a job. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Safe behavior is a condition of employment.” Management expectations have also changed. The expectation is not restricted only for regulatory compliance but to achieve safety excellence. The aim of the organization is zero accident and safety manger is on driving seat. The effective management of safety is a key driver of the continued success of businesses. It is important that senior managers seek to demonstrate effective safety and health leadership alongside and integrated with their other responsibilities and duties. Effective management is about securing the health, safety and welfare of all staff by reducing risk, and ensuring protection from harm or illness arising out of work activities. It is necessary to establish continuous Safety improvements in the organization with review mechanism. 70 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

It is a management’s duty to provide strategic direction for the management of safety and health in their organization and to motivate staff to engage effectively in ensuring good safety and health performance. There is therefore an important difference between Safety & Health Leadership and Safety & Health Management. The former is strategic and the latter operational. The focus here is on leadership: much of the emphasis is on senior management up to and including Board level.

of the past unfortunate incidents in the Indian context from chemical industries. But since then Management approach towards safety can also be seen changing and top management involvement has been increased to large extent. Many large companies have implemented separate IT modules like SAP EHS to monitor Safety performance effectively and ensure safety systems are complied with. Industries are directing efforts towards robust management systems to ensure safety compliance and towards preventive

measures. With changing scenario, today’s role of safety manager can be seen to be changing to inculcate better business understanding to create value for business. To inculcate “Safety First Culture”, management is seen to take more proactive steps which are evident from below mentioned top management expectations. To match increased expectations from top management, today’s safety manager not only play an advisory role or any other roles as mentioned above, but he/she needs to perform more active role in building “Safety First” culture and implementation of safety at workplace. He/she needs to provide comprehensive business solutions to address safety concerns of industry. Today’s role of safety manager can be summarized as below – Nowadays even organization structure for safety management is taking shape to achieve increased focus on safety. Conventionally safety function was working mostly in isolation and performing advisory role. We can say that there was lack of co-ordination of efforts to execute or integrate safety with other functions to achieve desired outcome of increased safety along with improvement in productivity. In today’s changing scenario, many industrial houses prefer to establish corporate Safety section to ensure improved co-ordination in safety related activities. Corporate Safety drives safety initiatives across the organization. It plays a major role of liaisoning with top management for safety. Major roles of corporate safety are as enlisted below – 72 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

• To provide comprehensive advisory service to Chief Executive and Directors. • To advise and assist in the planning and promotion of health and Safety programmes. • To interpret and advise on the implementation of Safety related legislations. • To carry out EHS audits and inspections of sites periodically. • To advise on safety aspects in the design and use of plant, equipment and systems of work. • Investigating causes of accidents. • Liaise with human resources and to advice on Safety training matters. • Liaise with external entities such National safety council, British Safety Council etc. • Horizontal deployment of best safety practices. • Horizontal deployment of incident CAPA. • Develop safety guidelines/standards for organization. • Standardization of safety practices across organization. • Participate in various global reporting mechanisms. • Drive special safety related projects across organization. 4. Safety as a Business Function As discussed in the previous topic, to meet top management expectation, safety professional need to transform safety into business value and demonstrate safety performance in the context of organization’s business objectives. It is very important now-a-days to link safety to the drivers of business value, demonstrate tools to improve

business performance along with safety. Safety manager can promote value of Safety programs in terms of business drivers as mentioned below wherever possible – • Contribution to business profitability. • Comply with regulations, government mandates, judicial interpretations or directives. • Support business initiatives (e.g. strategies for Greenfield project implementations). • Enhance organization’s image and reputation (e.g. global reporting, Disclosures etc.). • Others (e.g. employee considerations, insurance etc.). To portray Safety as a business function, majorly below mentioned barriers can be observed in Indian scenario • Safety is viewed as a cost. • Safety professionals do not speak the financial or business language of their organizations. • There is lack of technical skills to link Safety performance to business objectives or outcomes. Because of above mentioned shortcomings (as observed in Indian scenario), it is often difficult to justify safety investment and budgets to drive safety implementation at workplace. Safety professionals in today’s scenario need to adopt multidisciplinary approach to communicate benefits of safety programs in terms of productivity, reduced cost, reduced lead time, increased employee morale etc. Hence it is needed to promote business value of safety initiatives or programs and link safety programs with business outcomes. While liasoning with top management and CFO, it is always important to justify safety budgets/ investments along the lines of business drivers. 5. Pillars of Safety in an Organization For driving safety initiatives in an www.ind-safety.com

position in review process. Audit system is another system which helps to ensure compliance with safety standards of organization. Safety systems are based on P-D-C-A (Plan – Do – Check – Act) cycle as per OHSAS 18001 standard. Management review and audits helps to keep check on existing system and ensure sustenance of control measures for safety.

organization, below mentioned pillars have been illustrated: a) Safety Culture Promotion of safety culture is a long term strategy which requires sustained effort and interest. It is possible to improve overall safety performance through safety culture survey to identify the gaps, cause and subsequent measures for sustainable improvement. It is very important that strong safety culture in organization drives all the activities through commitment to safety at all levels. As such, safety culture is a sub set of organizational culture, which is a mix of shared values, attitudes and patterns of behavior that give the organization its particular character. Many experts advocate that the safety culture should be integrated in the organization as core value. Hence, it will be heavily influenced by the personal commitment, responsibility and communication of senior level management as well as Safety manager. Safety culture of organization is reflected from following key www.ind-safety.com

aspects – • Management commitment • Visible management • Good communications between all levels of employees • Active employee participation at all levels e.g. Risk assessments, training To inculcate “SAFETY FIRST” culture, top management involvement is very essential. Top management shall Priority to Safety should be visible through various safety initiatives in the organization as well as through attitude of employees at all levels. Employees can be seen interested in addressing safety concerns and would show their active participation in safety related activities such as Risk assessment, Safety inspection etc. b) Management Review & Audit Management review is an important driver of safety initiatives across organization. Top management periodically reviews progress of safety initiatives across organization. There has to be involvement of director or equivalent

c) Human factors in Safety Human factors refer to environmental, organizational and job factors, and human and individual characteristics, which influence behavior at work in a way which can affect health and safety. Tasks should be designed in accordance with ergonomic principles to take account of both human limitations and strengths. This includes matching the job to the physical and the mental strengths and limitations of people. Managing human failures is essential to prevent major accidents, occupational accidents and ill health, all of which can cost businesses money, reputation and potentially their continued existence. Successful businesses achieve high productivity and quality while ensuring health and safety. Good technology combined with the best work systems can help to achieve these goals. The best work systems are based on having a skilled workforce, with well-designed jobs that are appropriate to individuals’ abilities. A Human Factors (or Ergonomics) approach focuses on how to make the best use of these capabilities: by designing jobs and equipment which are fit for people. This not only improves their health and safety but often ensures a better managed more effective organization. But while addressing human factors, interventions will not be effective if these aspects are considered in isolation. The scope of what we mean by human factors includes organizational systems and is considerably broader than traditional views of INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | JULY 2015 | 73

human factors/ergonomics. It requires multidisciplinary approach to develop appropriate interventions in the areas of human factors. Generally outcome of these interventions needs to be quantified in terms of improved productivity, reduced lead time along with improved safety. Following aspects are crucial in this area to achieve desired outcomes • Management commitment. • Workforce involvement in countermeasures to fatigue. • Competence & willingness for execution of projects. • Updated knowledge about material handling. • Knack to identify Muda, Mura &Muri (Japanese words) in the processes. • Knack of highlighting benefits in terms of money or productivity. d) Process Design The aim of process design is to create a process, which is profitable, economic, safe, environmentally benign and user friendly. This is achieved by the optimization of process alternatives according to economic and functional criteria. It is required that the safety of a process plant fulfills a certain required level. An unsafe plant cannot be profitable due to losses of production and capital. An inherently safer design is one that avoids hazards instead of controlling them, particularly by reducing the amount of hazardous material and the number of hazardous operations in the plant. Methods developed to date have largely been for the evaluating the safety of a proposed design. In the future the emphasis will be more and more on the synthesis of an inherently safer plant. Safety should be integral part of process design and it is important to inculcate safety requirements during process design itself. At design phase, various tools such as HAZOP, PHA, JSA, and FMEA are used to identify hazards and initiate mitigation measures 74 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

accordingly. Integration of safety at design phase helps to ensure smooth project completion as well as operation thereafter. If safety is not given its due attention during design, there can be cases of rework and thereby project failure. For daily operations, it is advisable to include safety instructions in work procedures/ Standard operating procedures. e) Knowledge & competence Knowledge about safety requirements and precautionary measures are essential to ensure safe work practices at workplace. People should be thoroughly aware of workplace hazards and their control measures. Training of people is very important in this aspect. Now-a-days companies are developing job specific training modules to impart people with required knowledge and information. Many Audio visual tools are available nowadays to make people understand basic safety related concepts. With understanding of basic concepts, it is observed that safety compliance improves and people are motivated to follow safety rules and instructions. Safety Induction of newcomers is a must and it should include job specific information of hazards and control measures. Various tools like KYT (KikenYochi training) which involve workforce help to increase people awareness and competence over the period. f) Systems and procedures Organization safety management system and procedures therein are essential part of operations. Safety management system is based on well-known P – D – C- A cycle (Plan Do Check Act). It is essential to follow all safety procedures and systems to avoid any unfortunate incidents. Safety management system of organization needs to be well documented and reviewed periodically for up-dation. Above discussed pillars of safety are interdependent and

reinforce each other to achieve better results. 6. Expected Quality of Safety Manager: The primary role of the Safety Manager is to advise the Management on all occupational Health & safety matters to ensure the Company complies with its statutory obligations. Now occupational health and safety is considered as important as other business. The safety manger plays great role in the organization to implement sustainable Safety First culture. Safety manager must assume the “authority” that is supported by management teams in order to make the necessary changes in the workforce. Safety manager’s aim should be: All accidents are preventable. Every task will be done safely.” The quality of the safety managers should have – • Advise the Directors and Managers on all safety & health matters • Understand the application of the Health and Safety at Work • Keep up to date with changes in current legislation • To bring new techniques for improving health and safety. • Understanding of Safety tools such as JSA, HAZOP & FMEA etc. • Ability to link Safety performance with business drivers. • Good written and verbal communications. • Proficiency in computer usage – excel, power point etc. • Drive for implementation of safety. • Aggression and convincing ability. • Presentable approach for Safety proposals as well as safety initiatives. • “Do It Yourself” Attitude. • Fair understanding of business processes. 7. They range from simple inexpensive aids such as handles, slings, levers and hooks to more expensive aids such as lifters, rollers, magnets, conveyors, platforms, hoists and cranes. It is important that, where possible, the people doing the job are consulted so that the most appropriate and cost-effective mechanical aids are purchased. When new manual handling aids are introduced, it is essential that employees are trained to use them safely. Paint manufacturing is the batch process & lot of manual handlings is involved in each activity which includes frequent bending lifting pushing, pulling, transporting heavy load. The entire process is labour intensive as well as time consuming and tired some which lead to low productivity. Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd. has decided to eliminate these fatigue issue by providing mechanical aids to improve productivity. • Silo system with vacuum suction to transfer powder to mixer directly • Conveyor for transporting finished goods from production unit to storage location. • Automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) is provided for both raw materials and finished good • Dock leveler near unloading station • Drum cleaning machine • A jumbo bag with hoist is used for powder charging in reactor in resin dept. • Drum lifter cum tilter used for liquid charging from barrel Benefits of above automation • Bulk charging of pigments. • No manual handling of pigment bags. • Improvement in productivity. 7.2 Risk Reduction through KYT (Kiken Yochi Training) Specific safety methods developed so that workplaces can take steps on preemptive action for safety include 76 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

hazard prediction training and pointing and calling. Activities incorporating these methods in a unified manner are called hazard prediction activities. “KYT - Japanese acronym of Kiken(Hazards) Yochi (Prediction) Training” is one of such method to identify actual hazards at workplace through workforce participation. Using illustrations showing the workplace and work conditions, or while supervising or demonstrating work in real situations on site, discuss in small groups hazardous factors in the workplace and in work conditions (unsafe conditions and unsafe behavior that may lead to industrial accidents or accidents). Discuss, think about, and understand (or ask yourself about) the phenomena (type of accidents) that may arise from such factors, & determine the danger points and the kind of action to take, confirming these with pointing & calling, and pointing and saying out louder together. Conduct this training so that you can take steps on preemptive action for safety before you act. The KYT Basic 4-Round Method forms the foundation for all these elements. Workers openly discuss the hidden hazards depicted in the illustrations of the workplace & work conditions and solve problems by proceeding through the four rounds step by step. Round 1: What are the hidden hazards? (Understanding the actual situation) Round 2: These are the danger points. (Investigating the reality) Round 3: What would you do? (Establishing countermeasures) Round 4: These are the danger points. (Setting targets) The KYT method increases the motivation of workers to practice in teams. It uses meetings to sharpen awareness of what constitutes danger. Workers share information on hazards and improve their problem solving capabilities by working on finding solutions in meetings. And they improve

their powers of concentration by practicing pointing and calling activities in all of the important points in the work. Kansai Nerolac Paints has adopted this culture in 3 years back and widely done in the plants in each section. Top management is also reviewing the KYT process during monthly safety review meeting. This improve safety awareness, team activity and prompt identification & elimination of hazards. As result Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd, has achieved Zero lost time injury and zero fire incident in last three years. The minor injury is also drastically reduced year to year. 8. Conclusion To achieve safety excellence in Chemical industry, top management involvement is necessary. Safety First culture in an organization is possible only if there is top management commitment towards safety. But at the same time it is necessary to drive efforts towards workforce participation in safety initiatives. Risk assessment tools like KYT are helpful in proactive identification and mitigation of safety risks. Further safety needs to be transformed as a business function to achieve desired outcome of operational excellence with zero incidents. 9. References 1. B

ig data is a broad term for data sets that are so large or complex that it is difficult to process this data using traditional database and software techniques. Big data could range from a few dozen terabytes to many peta bytes of data. Big Data represents the Information assets characterized by High Volume, Velocity and Variety to require specific Technology and Analytical Methods for its transformation into Value. (Refer to Understanding Big Data – June issue of I.S.R. pages 69-70). In this scenario and in order to provide useful insight to the management and gain correct content, data has to be processed with advanced tools (analytics and algorithms) to generate meaningful information. Considering the presence of visible and invisible issues in an industrial environment, the information generation algorithm has to be capable of detecting and addressing invisible issues such as machine degradation, component wear, etc. Big data requires exceptional technologies to efficiently process large quantities of data within tolerable elapsed times. An Organization doesn’t need

more Big Data, it needs actionable data. There are endless benefits to managing Big Data instead of either ignoring it or allowing it to overwhelm an organization. Big data analytics refers to the process of collecting, organizing and analyzing large sets of data (called big data) to discover patterns and other useful information. Big data analytics can help organizations to better understand the information contained within the data and will also help identify the data that is most important to the business and future business decisions. By fully integrating video surveillance and analytics with other security systems, such as access control, field operations and panic alarms, an organization can streamline its response and decision-making capabilities. When these traditional security technologies are leveraged in combination with emerging systems, the result is actionable intelligence. There is a strong link between video and data analytics, not just for security operations, but for retail operations as well. Through new features such as real time access, instant event www.ind-safety.com

SECURITY INDUSTRY » Tech Update

search, and archiving, other departments have visibility to what is going on across retail stores. Operations can uncover theft far more efficiently. Marketing can also optimize in-store promotions, and HR can better understand organizational behaviour. Analytics can also provide real, measurable value in the area of business intelligence. By applying smart video to big data, retailers, banks and other organizations can realize a variety of operational benefits. For example, retailers can use analytics to help count shoppers, monitor what products they’re looking at and watch for traffic patterns—then adjust the store layout and merchandising accordingly. Banks can use analytics to help improve customer service and detect fraud. Casinos, meanwhile, can better identify when a high roller—or a known card counter—walks in the door and respond accordingly. Big Data and Analytics strategy. • Create Smarter, Leaner Organizations • Equip the Organization to Have Cross-Channel Conversations • Prepare the Organization for the Inevitable Future Big data is everywhere. For organizations ready to take advantage of it, the key is adopting the right technology to help mine it effectively. Traditional video surveillance is primarily a security application and very reactive – when something bad has happened, you spend hours reviewing the footage and then take action. With Big Data technologies, there is an opportunity to move beyond security to monitoring and analyzing the business in order to better understand customer behaviour, optimize operations, manage risk, and innovate. For these organizations, integrating video with other security and business operations platforms, including loss prevention, marketing www.ind-safety.com

and point of sale, also yields a variety of benefits. Banks, retailers and casinos can more readily respond to criminal activity and vandalism, while easily sharing vital information with local law enforcement. Create Smarter, Leaner Organizations A well thought out and executed Big Data and analytics strategy ultimately makes organizations smarter and more efficient. Big Data is being leveraged in many industries from criminal justice to health care to real estate with powerful outcomes. The same common sense approach to Big Data should be employed by organizations desiring similar results. City Police Departments use Big Data technology to geo-locate and analyze ‘historical arrest patterns’ while cross-tabbing them with sporting events, paydays, rainfall, traffic flows, and federal holidays. These Departments utilize data patterns, scientific analysis, and technological tools to identify crime “hot spots.” With such analysis officers could be deployed to locations where crimes are likely to occur before the crimes are committed. Data creates leads and context in which the Police Department can operate at an optimal level - working smarter, leaner, and meaner. Equip the Organization to Have Cross-Channel Conversations Most Organizations are no longer able to carry out the conversations they once had with customers. A Forrester thought leadership paper, “Use Behavioral Marketing To Up The Ante In The Age Of The Customer,” states that building “the technical infrastructure to support dynamic, cross-channel conversations with customers” is absolutely necessary for organizational impact. “It’s simply not possible to manage the delivery of dynamic, targeted, consistent content,

offers, and products, across digitally enabled customer touch points when marketing tasks are semi-automated with a series of un-integrated software tools.” Best industry practices today suggest staying close to the customer by investing in customer insight. Analytics enables the Organization to gain customer insight and strong market intelligence. Prepare the Organization for the Inevitable Future The digitization of all customer-facing organizational systems from customer service to sales to marketing is the inevitable future. Big Data management tools are having a major impact on the marketing teams and departments of every organization today. Organizations that resist the scientific and systematic approach to data analysis, online advertising, and more will become obsolete. The Challenges of Big Data Analytics • Breaking down data silos • Creating platforms that can pull in unstructured data as easily as structured data. For most organizations, big data analysis is a challenge. Consider the sheer volume of data and the different formats of the data (both structured and unstructured data) that is collected across the entire organization and the many different ways the different types of data can be combined, contrasted and analyzed to find patterns and other useful business information. The first challenge is to break down data silos to access all data an organization stores in different places and often in different systems. A second big data challenge is in creating platforms that can pull in unstructured data as easily as structured data. This massive volume of data is INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | JULY 2015 | 83

SECURITY INDUSTRY » Tech Update

typically so large that it’s difficult to process using traditional database and software methods. To analyze such a large volume of data requires high performance analytics. Big data analytics is typically performed using specialized software tools and applications for predictive analytics, data mining, text mining, forecasting and data optimization. Collectively these processes are separate but highly integrated functions of high-performance analytics. Using big data tools and software enables an organization to process extremely large volumes of data that a business has collected to determine which data is relevant and can be analyzed to drive better business decisions in the future. Use of Big Data Analytics - Examples As the technology that helps an organization to break down data silos and analyze data improves, business can be transformed in all sorts of ways. Advances in analyzing Big Data allow researchers to decode human DNA in minutes, predict where terrorists plan to attack, determine which gene is mostly likely to be responsible for certain diseases and which ads one is most likely to respond to on, say, Facebook. The business cases for leveraging

84 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

Big Data are compelling. Netflix mined its subscriber data to put the essential ingredients together for its recent hit “House of Cards”. Subscriber data also prompted the company to bring back “Arrested Development”. Another example comes from one of the biggest mobile carriers in the world. France’s Orange launched its Data for Development project by releasing subscriber data for customers in the Ivory Coast. The 2.5 billion records, which were made anonymous, included details on calls and text messages exchanged between 5 million users. Researchers accessed the data and sent Orange proposals for how the data could serve as the foundation for development projects to improve public health and safety. Proposed projects included one that showed how to improve public safety by tracking cell phone data to map where people went after emergencies. Another showed how to use cellular data for disease containment. The Benefits of Big Data Analytics Enterprises are increasingly striving to find actionable insights into their data. Many big data projects originate from the need to answer specific business questions. With the right big data analytics platforms in place, an

enterprise can boost sales, increase efficiency, and improve operations, customer service and risk management. It is reported that most Organizations are applying big data analytics to improve customer retention, help with product development and gain a competitive advantage. Organizations use big data analytics to improve speed and reduce complexity. They are using this to increasing efficiencies and optimizing operations. Summary • Big Data Analytics provides more than just security for video surveillance. • Analytics provides real, measurable value in the area of business intelligence. • Big Data and analytics help Police Departments to anticipate & identify criminal activity before it occurs. • Retail is gaining real-time insight across devices, destinations and geographies. • Heightened security concerns around the world are causing organizations to expand their use of video surveillance and other physical security technologies, forcing Security Departments and IT to converge and innovate. Big Data Analytics is driving this convergence to do more with video surveillance. • Operations can uncover theft for more efficiently. • Marketing can optimize in-store promotions. • HR can better understand organizational behaviour. • Big data analytics is being deployed to improve customer retention, help with product development and gain a competitive advantage. • Big Data Analytics helps increase efficiencies and optimizing operations. www.ind-safety.com

Hikvision Protects Pupils Going to School in Dubai 100 school buses for the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman’s National Charity School equipped with Hikvision CCTV cameras, DVRs and driver LCD screens

G

etting pupils safely to and from their schools is a worldwide problem. The answer for many schools in urbanized countries is the dedicated School Bus and, in this regard, Dubai’s National Charity School conforms to the norm. Situated in the metropolitan area of Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman, the fastest growing urban area in the Arab world, the school has invested in extra security for its fleet of 100 buses to enhance the security of all its pupils. Sixty large single- and double-decker buses carry the majority of the children, and each is fitted with Hikvision DVRs and either 2 or 3 Hikvision CCTV cameras to monitor all the seats and the access doors. In addition, all 100 buses and mini-buses are fitted with Hikvision CCTV reversing cameras and a driver’s LCD screen for extra security.

90 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

Introduction Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman is a vast urban region encompassing the cities of Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. It stretches along 184 kilometers of the coastline of the United Arab Emirates and is the fastest growing urban area in the entire region. A combined population of approx. 3.25 million makes it one of the top 10 Arab urban areas by population and the region’s $100 billion economy makes it Arabia’s eighth largest. The area also includes some of the most prominent universities in the region, including the American Universities of Sharjah and Dubai and Ajman University of Science and Technology. The National Charity School The National Charity School sits close to Dubai International Airport, overlooking the nearby Dubai Creek. The

school is the centre of education for about 5,600 pupils and has been in operation since 1983. It’s a co-educational establishment, providing education from Grade 1 to Grade 12 to pupils in the age range five to 17 years. As a charity school it takes pupils primarily from economically disadvantaged backgrounds that are unable to afford private education. Despite the relative lack of family wealth, the school’s aim is to provide first-class educational facilities and learning resources for the students in order to enable academic excellence and examination excellence. Ensuring safe transport Drawing pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds over such a wide area has given rise to transport problems and the school recognized that providing all their pupils with safe, secure transport was a top priority. Additional impetus was provided by the notoriety of the roads around Al Garhoud, which are taking ever higher levels of traffic with an associated rise in the number of accidents. To ensure convenience and protection for all pupils, the National Charity School has recently invested in a school bus fleet. Parents were asked for a nominal fee and, in return, the school has provided 100 modern air-conditioned buses. Conscious of their responsibility to ensure safe transport, the school turned to a local specialist company - Al Arabia Technical Supplies and Contracts LLC – to install reversing camera systems into the entire fleet and a comprehensive CCTV system www.ind-safety.com

and installed in just 2 months.

into the largest 60 buses. “At a first glance the project appeared to be simple,” says Sabri Alkhawaja, Integration Manager at Al Arabia Technical Supplies and Contracts LLC. “The primary requirement was that each of the 60 large buses, whether single- or double- decker, had to be equipped with sufficient CCTV cameras to ensure that all access doors and seating areas were monitored. In addition, all of the buses were to be fitted with external cameras, together with a monitor visible to the driver, for safer maneuvering and reversing. And, naturally, all of the selected equipment had to be robust enough to cope with the harsh operating environment.” Al Arabia Technical Supplies and Contracts was certain that its specialist knowledge and experience within the school transport sector would enable it to combine the latest in CCTV technology with the necessary hardened installation. But, the integration team faced a major problem. Every bus had to be surveyed for camera siting and all the equipment ordered www.ind-safety.com

The 100-bus solution Within the two month deadline, Al Arabia Technical Supplies and Contracts installed 240 Hikvision DS-2CE5582P IR Dome Cameras, 60 Hikvision DS-8104HMFI-T Mobile DVRs and 100 LCD monitors across the 100-bus fleet. “Harsh environmental issues of vibration, dust and rapidly-changing extremes of temperature had to be faced by all the pieces of equipment we selected for the project,” says Sabri Alkhawaja. “This was particularly the case for the Hikvision DS-8104HMFI-T Mobile DVR that was at the core of the mobile CCTV surveillance system in the 60 large buses. Each receives video feeds from two or three cameras, depending on the bus type, and is equipped with dual SATA HDDs or SSDs, a built-in GPS module, 3G connectivity, a redundant power supply and power-off protection.Importantly, the DVR is capable of being powered by a DC voltage between 6V and 36V, ideal for all vehicle and other mobile applications, and also provides 12V and 5V DC outputs to drive cameras and other associated equipment. In practice, all 60 have performed faultlessly.” Of the 240 cameras, 100 were matched with LCD monitors for reversing and external viewing applications. The remaining 140 cameras were positioned to meet the requirement to monitor all doors and seats – three being used in each of the double-decker buses and two each in the single-deckers. “The DS-2CE5582P IR Dome Camera is ideal for this type of installation.” says Sabri Alkhawaja. “The IP66 rating allowing it to be used internally or externally and the 12V DC supply is ideally matched with the Mobile DVR. Together with a 20m IR range, true day and night operation and good resolution from the large image sensor,

this camera also has the capability to provide high quality video of all the areas surveyed. Finally, the extremes of temperature encountered in the Gulf are not a problem, since it will operate in temperatures as high as 60 °C and as low as -40 °C. Conclusion “The new CCTV systems have proven an immediate success,” according to Sabri Alkhawaja. “The installation process was relatively easy and straightforward, which was extremely useful given the tight timescales, and the safety of all the pupils who make use of the school buses has been secured. “Hikvision responded rapidly to our requests for information and in equipment delivery. Importantly, all the equipment we selected for this project has stood up really well to the harsh environmental challenges of vibration, dust and changing temperatures – and children!” About Hikvision Hikvision is the world’s largest supplier of video surveillance products and solutions. Copper Theft : Huge Cost from Small Thefts at the Sub-Stations

F

ueled by economic growth, worldwide demand for copper has steadily risen over the past several years. Supply has been unable to keep pace, pushing prices dramatically upward almost doubling in the last few years. Tight supplies have led to an increase in copper recycling, which, in turn, has created a market for used copper thereby making it a lucrative target for theft. Thefts of copper wire have been on the rise across India, with no apparent geographic pattern and all sectors that use the material are being targeted especially electric utilities wherein utility poles at substation transformers are vandalized for copper. The thefts have several adverse consequences, including the obvious economic impact, service disruptions, and possibly personal injury or death for persons involved in the theft or subsequent recovery efforts. According to National Insurance Crime Bureau which tracks incidents of metal theft, 47,083 claims were filed from 2010 to 2013. Nearly 96% of the claims in the more recent period were for copper and related equipment theft.

Power companies are increasingly concerned about this growing menace and have begun to investigate and implement measures for deterring thefts, protecting facilities and quickly recovering from any consequences. Secure but still not Secure Power companies install surveillance cameras with motion control and analytics; however the bandwidth requirement accompanied by low connectivity at remote locations makes it an unviable option. Further, cameras are investigate measure and not a preventive mean to resist vandals; the economic and image loss incurred due to any incident cannot be undone by investigating and catching hold of the culprit. A hurdle that the companies are facing is setting up access control security systems at these remote sites which require shelters, UPS supply, complex gadgets, hard wiring and other infrastructural change. Such complex systems do provide security but once the miscreants fiddle with the wires & equipment, the entire security systems is rendered useless.

Remoteness of the Sub-stations One of the key reasons for theft at power sub-stations is due to their remote locations coupled with inadequate security measures. On a conservative approach, power companies bled around Rs. 5,500 crore every year due to thefts of copper & other equipment from sub-stations.

Threat – Internal as well as External A more thorough investigation reveals that the most vulnerable point for insiders as well as outsiders to indulge in malicious activities is the entry gate itself. Usually mechanical padlocks are used to lock the gates which can be easily picked or tampered. The problem with mechanical locks there is no restricting or any tracking mechanism of “Who entered the substation by accessing Which lock and When” creating scope for insiders with a key to go around the system and exploit it to their benefit. Operational hassles follow such as keys getting lost which creates vulnerability of key being misused. The only solution to stop any such misuse is to change the lock itself. The need of the hour is a robust access control locking system which not only helps detect theft but also prevent them; and should also what is needed is an access control system which works flawlessly in extreme environmental conditions.

Solution Cylock wherein one can replace the existing mechanical padlocks with ‘Electronic yet Non-wired’ Access Control Padlocks. • It does not need any wiring or a power source (not even batteries) as the Cylinder is energized by the Cykey i.e. no hard-wiring required for the electronic locks.

Proposed Solution to counter the pain points – Cylock Sellox proposes the use of specialized smart Access Control (Locking)

• A robust solution, the Keys cannot be duplicated and the Cylinders are tamper resistant, dust resistant and water resistant.

• One Cykey can access any number of locks depending on the Schedules, Access Rights & Authorization of an individual. • Provides a detailed Audit Trail/ Track Record as to “Who accessed Which lock and When”. • No need to worry about Lost Keys; or former employees with keys as they can be easily deactivated in the system • Logs denied events or unauthorized access so necessary disciplinary actions can be taken.

Zicom’s alert command centre monitoring helps foil robbery at ATM of a public sector bank Attempted Robbery On the wee hours of June 19, 2015 four thieves sneaked into the Badalwas Branch ATM Center of a Public Bank in Alwar, Rajasthan. Three had gone inside the ATM booth while the fourth one was guarding from outside and notifying his accomplices of the movement of people thereabouts. The three who were in began to dismantle the ATM. They struggled hard to break the machine and vamoose with whatever cash they could grab on. But the machine was so strong it did not give despite receiving hard knocks. Thanks to Zicom’s robust Command Center all their nefarious attempts were vividly captured and the hooter began to blare warning them. Sensing danger they left the ATM Center in a hurry with their evil mission unfinished. That saved a lot of liquid cash inside ATM. Kudos The installation of Zicom’s ATM security solutions in one of India’s leading public sector banks has brought down its operational cost. “Thanks to Zicom’s 24x7 security surveillance the robbery at our ATM Center at Badalwas branch in Alwar was prevented. We appreciate the monitoring team’s promptness in alerting us as soon as there was a break-in. We are happy to associate ourselves with Zicom whose state- of –the-art security solution not only safeguards our assets inside 100 | JULY 2015 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

our numerous ATM Centers but also helps in increasing our profitability,” says a Senior Officer of this public sector bank at Alwar, Rajasthan. The bank has also commended Zicom through an official letter. Prevailing Lacunae With the proliferation of ATMs, the anti-social elements and thieves are also having a field day by making daring attempts into the remote premises of ATM and sometimes escaping with their booty unchallenged. These things happen due to poor security management. A solitary security guard or watchman is not equipped to handle armed thugs. Hence, technology’s intervention is paramount for preventing ATM heists. The present ATM security system in the country is devoid of a) remote monitoring alarms, b) daily check up of the systems, c) adequate networking capability, d) audit trails of alarms for cogent investigations and e) proper maintenance as per SLA. They render the system go kaput at critical moments and result in excessive spending on security guards and increasing stress on Bank’s Branch Managers, Security Heads and Custodians and thereby diverting their focus from prioritized activities. Challenges • Non availability of forensic evidence in ATM break-ins &

monitor ATMs 24x7 from a remote location through cameras and twoway voice systems. Any abnormality from the ATM Center is communicated in real time to Command Center which alerts the taskforce to control the situation within a matter of minutes. This unprecedented model where a customer pays for services on RMR (Recurring Monthly Revenue) without having to own any systems. When an attempt is made to cover the camera installed inside the ATM, steal the cheque box, tamper with ATM machine, remove the air conditioner or decamp even with a dust bin an alarm goes off at Zicom Command Centre and the Quick Response Team (QRT) immediately swings into action. The QRT is quickly mobilized as first responders and depending on the alert, Emergency Management is initiated in terms of calling the police, ambulance, or the fire brigade. Unique Model Under SaaS model Zicom invests in equipment, technology and manpower. The customer-in this case, a bank- pays only a monthly service fee for the service. “Generally, it is the bank which makes the whole investment as the ATM is its property. However, this particular model entails a lot of savings for the bank in terms of capital expenditure and operational costs,” says Mr. Pramoud Rao, Founder and

Managing Director, Zicom Electronic Security Systems Ltd. This integration of services under e-Surveillance which help in preventing ATM thefts and robberies was launched by Zicom in October 2012. This innovative solution is based on GSM technology. Following the horrifying ATM incident in Bangalore in November 2013, the government decreed it mandatory for all banks to have a security guard round-theclock outside the ATM Center to provide safety for its users. Consequently, many ATMs were shut down due to financial reasons. With Zicom’s ATM services, the banks can now reduce the cost and at the same time provide adequate security cover for the ATM users. Best ATM Solutions • The SaaS Model OF Zicom for ATM Security has number of beneficial features for the customers. • No CAPEX involved* • No installation and maintenance costs • No AMC costs. • 24x7 remote monitoring for alarms and video surveillance • Dedicated quick response team(QRT) moving around on motorbikes frequently monitoring the condition of ATMs • Pan India customer support presence (1023 locations) • Readily deployable task force. • State- of- the- art Command Center kept in a standby mode. www.ind-safety.com
