Dräger expands the X-zone system New opportunities in mobile area monitoring

L

übeck – With the new model X-zone 5500 and

the GSM module X-zone Com, Dräger is expanding the opportunities for mobile area monitoring. The system can now send measuring data and warning notices by email, by text message or to the cloud. Like the original X-zone 5000, you can connect up to 25 X-zone 5500s in an alarm chain. The triggering device transfers the alarm to all other devices in the chain. One X-zone Com is now enough to forward the data from up to 15 devices directly to the safety officer. No precious time will be lost in an emergency.

More information, more safety Via Bluetooth, the data of the grouped X-zone can also be displayed on a laptop. The integrated GPS module transmits the position of the X-zone Com and thus also the position of the hazard location. A data logger continually stores the measurements. British Safety Council’s annual conference 2014: “Pushing health up the workplace agenda” On 15 October 2014 the British Safety Council will be hosting its annual conference at the America Square Conference Centre, London EC3N 2LB. This year we are focusing on occupational health. Absence from work owing to work-related ill-health far outweighs absence due to injury at work and as an issue overall occupational health is generally perceived as being more difficult to manage than safety.

T

he conference, which will be opened by our Chair of Trustees Lynda Armstrong OBE, will include keynote presentations from Lawrence Waterman OBE, Director of Health and Safety at Battersea Power Station, Trustee of the British Safety Council and Past President of IOSH; and Dr Lesley Rushton OBE, Reader in Occupational Epidemiology, Imperial College, London, one of the leading experts on work-related disease. There will also be presentations by Steve Perkins, Chief Executive, BOHS - The Chartered Society for Worker Health Protection and the Health and Safety Executive. These will be followed by a number of panel discussions on key issues in relation to occupational health and the experience gained from rolling out health and well-being programmes in workplaces. Neal Stone, Policy and Communications Director at the British Safety Council, said: “There have been significant improvements in the 40 years since the enactment of the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974 in the reduction of fatal and major injuries at work. This achievement is a tribute to all of those involved in ensuring that the

risk of workplace injury is effectively controlled. “However, occupational health has not had the same degree of attention and has not consequently experienced a similar improvement. With 1.8 million people suffering from ill health caused or made worse by work every year, according to the latest statistics from the Health and Safety Executive, this is without doubt a key risk that business needs to be focusing on. “Our conference will provide an opportunity for our members and others to hear from a range of experts in the field of occupational health and those who have contributed to putting successful programmes and initiatives in place including our member organisations. The conference will address a wide range of issues concerning occupational health from exposure to harmful substances and work environments

to issues around mental health, rehabilitation, stress management and the health challenges of managing an ageing workforce.” In addition to the confirmed speakers there are a number of confirmed panellists from business and experts in occupational health taking part that include Sodexo, Mount Anvil, The Work Foundation, OECD, Health and Safety Laboratory, Loughborough University, Mind, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Royal College of Arts (RCA) as well as others.

Lighter, brighter, longer-lived: New generation of robust fluorescent lights for hazardous areas

R

. STAHL’s new line of light fittings for use in Ex zone 1/21 and 2/22 hazardous areas achieves better energy efficiency than comparable devices and provide approximately 10% more luminous flux. New EXLUX 6001 luminaires also feature a design that is considerably more compact, stable, and torsionresistant than their EXLUX 6000 predecessors. While more than one million of the long-proven EXLUX 6000 lights have been deployed worldwide over the last twenty-odd years, the new generation now meets increasing user demand for a similarly economic, yet enhanced product with improved technical features reflecting the most current state of the art. Depending on their performance class, the 6001 luminaires are a quarter to a third lighter than their predecessor models and many competing products. Users now also benefit from the extremely robust design of these slimmer, narrower units: unlike most lights, the new devices can be operated at extremely low ambient temperatures (as low as -30 °C). In many cases, this amounts to a

decisive extension of the application range that saves costs by making extra specifications unnecessary. In order to facilitate a stepby-step exchange of existing EXLUX pendants, the installation of the new units remains fully compatible to the predecessor series. Moreover, swiftly removable replacement parts ensure quick and easy maintenance. Like before, the new lights are available with customerspecific modifications on request. In addition, R. STAHL provides especially cost-efficient standard models with a power consumption of 18 W, 36 W, or 58 W that are available at short notice. Featuring 4 mm² cage clamp terminals, 5-core through-wiring, and a full-phase safety shutdown, these models are adequately equipped for the majority of all typical applications. The new series fully complies with the requirements of all current industry standards. Notably, the new silicone-based foamed gasket has been optimised for maximum durability, as stipulated by IEC 60079. This sealing solution, which is

resistant to various chemicals as well as UV radiation, the fitting’s hinge, and a newly designed central lock reliably ensure IP66/IP67 protection over many years. 6001 series lights are available as of now. However, more products are due to follow in the new EXLUX generation: in the near future, the program will be extended both by optional accessories, such as pole mount adapters, and by additional models such as emergency lights, lights with an address module, and models with T5 fluorescent lamps for use in zone 2/22. Moreover, LED lights from R. STAHL will also be available soon, though these will be based on a completely different housing and equipped with materials and features optimised for LED technology.

The development of the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12, has driven forward the establishment of the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as the standard credential for federal employees and contractors for access to federal information systems and controlled facilities. The Gallagher solution, purpose-built for the U.S. federal market, is an end-to-end system with integrated Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) compliant functionality from a single manufacturer that leverages existing components. The PIV solution is the first to be approved without the use of a PIV Authentication Module. It is also the first to meet the reader range requirement - its technology reads cards at a 3.5+cm distance, providing the utmost flexibility for the user. New Irish ePassport wins International Design Award

Another feature involves images situated on the edge of each pair of pages – when the pages are partially bent for the edges to be side by side, the two images form a complete image. The new passport also features poems from three of Ireland’s bestknown poets – NualaniDhomhnaill, William Butler Yeats, and James Orr. “DLRS is proud to have led the

Q. How the system works? Is this technology developed after bangalore incident ? The service offered for ATM security is e –surveillance and was offered to Banks much before the Bangalore incident. This solution is a comprehensive security solution designed exclusively for ATMs & integrates Intruder Alarm, Fire Alarm, CCTV surveillance and is coupled with 2 way audio communication as well. This entire solution is offered to Banks on SaaS model. There is Zero Investment & Zero Management for the Bank, it is offered on an OPEX basis. The Bank needs to pay a nominal usage fee on a monthly basis. Zicom deploys, maintains & monitors the entire system with no hidden costs to the Bank.

Q. How is it different from the existing system? The systems offered earlier were primitive. They were basically limited to CCTV surveillance cameras with DVR for local recording. It used to be stand alone and not networked. These were not connected to a Central Command Center for Remote Monitoring services. Also it entailed CAPEX for the Bank and AMC charges later. These systems were not remotely monitored.

E-surveillance operates on ip (Internet Protocol) and is connected to Zicom Command Center for 24x7 Remote Monitoring. It comprises of various sensors to protect every asset in the ATM lobby such as ATM machine, Cheque Drop box, Airconditioners, UPS, etc. It includes smoke and heat sensors as well. High resolution, varifocal, IR cameras are installed, both inside and outside the lobby for surveillance. Besides these, 2 way audio systems & hooter are provided to deter the criminal and alert the public in case of any crime or panic situation. The ATM sites are connected to Zicom Command Center and are remotely monitored on a 24x 7 basis. In the event of any alarm generated from ATM, a video verification is conducted to confirm if it is a criminal activity & the 2 way audio is triggered to deter the criminal . In the event the criminal persists, the local hooter is switched ON remotely from Zicom Command Center to alert the public and deter the criminal. Also depending on the emergency, ZCC also alerts to local Police Station or the Fire Brigade, as the case may be. Besides providing security coverage, e-surveillance additionally monitors the status of UPS and AC Power. It can be further extended for Energy Management too In short, e-surveillance is a comprehensive security service customized for 24x7 Remotely Monitored ATM security!

Venkatesan has over 20 years of professional experience across industries, government and academia both in India, Europe, and Australia. Venkatesan is at present working for the Department of Mines and Petroleum - DMP (Government of Western Australia) as a Senior Inspector of Petroleum and Major Hazard facilities. The DMP is a State regulatory agency in Australia that enforces and monitors safety cases for chemical and petroleum industries.

The safety case regulatory regime has been proven to be the most viable system to provide effective regulatory enforcement & monitoring through collaborative partnership with industries to prevent occurrence of major incidents. There are over 1900 Major Accident Hazard (MAH) control units or facilities in India [1]. There are also several million of registered hazardous factories, below MAH criteria. There are numerous factories

in unorganised sectors [2] storing and handling hazardous chemicals posing serious and complex risks to people, property and the environment. Major chemical and petrochemical disasters, with multiple fatalities, have occurred almost every year since the 1984 Bhopal gas leak disaster (see Table 1 [1], [2]) In addition to the loss of lives, these disasters have eroded the manufactured, human and natural capital base of the Indian economy. he Detective+ is a free-standing, transportable multigas monitor that can be used individually or in groups to monitor up to four gases at once. By using the Detective Net module, up to 25 Detective+ units can be linked wirelessly and positioned as much as 100 metres apart. Should wireless connection between two of the detectors weaken, the RICOCHET® wireless network will ‘self-heal’ and automatically reroute communications via alternative devices. This creates a ‘mesh’ type network, ensuring greater reliability in safety-critical situations. Over a dozen gas sensor options are available with the Detective+, including infrared sensors for flammable gas that are immune to the poisoning effects which plague standard flammable gas sensors. If a dangerous gas level is detected, the Detective+ unit warns with a wailing

In addition Detective Net transmits other fault information such as loss of signal or low battery power. A cable can even be used to extend the reach of an individual Detective+ unit and put it in a position with a stronger wireless signal – this is especially useful in cramped, confined spaces. The Detective+ is indeed ideal for confined spaces, ensuring safe gas levels before workers enter and monitoring continuously during welding and other repair work. With 60 hours of battery

operation, work can go on with a minimum of detector recharging, keeping shutdown time as short as possible. In commissioning new liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, the Detective+ can be placed along the pipelines to check for leaks, minimising explosion risks. The rugged tripod construction and raised profile keeps the Detective+ sensors away from obstructions and surface water. An integral safety cage gives extra protection in the event of the unit being overturned in chaotic work areas. Guard Tour Systems

A

guard tour patrol system is a system for logging the rounds of employees in a variety of situations such as security guards patrolling property, technicians monitoring climate-controlled environments, and correctional guards checking prisoner living areas. It helps ensure that the employee makes his or her appointed rounds at the correct intervals and can offer a record for legal or insurance reasons. Organizations hire security guards to protect their facilities on a ‘twenty-four hour, seven day per week’ basis. These guards are expected to carry out periodic patrols of the facility to detect suspicious & abnormal activity, including doors left unlocked, burned out lights, water leaks, safety hazards, and other such conditions. To get the most value of such patrols it is essential that the guards patrol according to established procedures. Patrols should be made at least several times per shift, and should cover all

important areas of the facility. The person managing the security program establishes a patrol route or “tour” that includes stops at all the important points that the security officer needs to check. Depending on the size of the facility, there may be several different tours, each which includes different areas of the facility. The officer usually alternates between tours, doing one tour during the first hour, and a different tour during the second hour, and so on throughout the shift.

In this way, all important areas of the facility are checked at least every two hours. Such systems have existed for many years using mechanical watch clock-based systems (watchman clocks/guard tour clocks/patrol clocks). Computerized systems were first introduced in Europe in the early1980s, and in North America in1986. Modern systems are based on handheld data loggers and RFID sensors. The system provides a

means to record the time when the employee reaches certain points on their tour. Checkpoints or watch stations are commonly placed at the extreme ends of the tour route and at critical points. Some systems are set so that the interval between stations is timed so if the employee fails to reach each point within a set time, an alarm can be triggered and other staff dispatched to ensure the employee’s well-being. During many shifts, security guards may work alone and with very little or no supervision. Often, security guards tend to remain at their posts and do not want to go on patrol. This can be particularly tempting at times when the weather is bad and going on patrol means going out in the cold or rain. Even when guards do go on patrol, there may be certain portions of the tour that are difficult to access or that require that a large number of stairs be climbed. There will always be a tendency for guards to skip these portions of the tour. Guard Tour systems have been developed to solve these problems. In general, guard tour systems record the activities of the security guards to determine if guards are making their tours when they should, and to verify that they are covering all portions of their tour.

Typical Deployment. The employee carries a portable electronic sensor or electronic data collector which is activated at each checkpoint. Checkpoints can consist of iButtons (addressable, dedicated ‘trackers’), magnetic strips, proximity microchips such as RFIDs, or optical barcodes.

The data collector stores the serial number of the checkpoint with the date and time. Later, the information is downloaded from the collector onto a computer where the checkpoint’s serial number will have an assigned location (eg. East Perimeter Fence, Block Number 1, etc.). Data collectors can also be programmed to ignore duplicate checkpoint activations that occur sequentially or within a certain time period. Computer software used to compile the data from the collector can print out summaries that pinpoint missed checkpoints or patrols without the operator having to review all the data collected. Because devices can be subject to misuse, some have builtin microwave, g-force, and voltage detection.

There are three basic types of guard tour systems in use: • Watchman’s Clock System • Electronic Guard Tour System • Guard Tour Integrated System

markings that indicate each of the 24 hours in the day. At various points along the patrol route, “key stations” are installed. Each key station contains a large metal key that looks something like a skeleton key. Each key has a unique key number. The key is usually fastened to the key station using a metal chain to keep the key from being removed. The key station usually has a door that allows the key to be stored when not in use. When on patrol, the security officer stops at each key station along the route, removes the key, and inserts it into the watchman’s clock. Doing this causes the key number to be printed on the paper dial located within the clock. The key number is printed next to the markings on the dial which indicate the present time. This provides a record of which keys were used and at what times. At the end of each day, the paper dial is removed from the watchman’s clock and replaced with a new one. The paper dials can be examined by the security manager or supervisor to determine if patrols were completed on time and that all stops along the patrol route were properly made. The paper dials can be filed away to provide a long-term record of all patrol activity.

Electronic Guard Tour System

This is the oldest type of guard tour system in use and has been around since the middle of the 19th Century. The watchman’s clock is a circular device about eight-inches in diameter and has an analog clock face on the front of it. The watchman’s clock is usually provided in a leather carrying case with shoulder strap which allows it to be carried by the security officer when on patrol. Inside of the watchman’s clock is a circular paper dial. This dial is printed with

An electronic data gathering device, called a “wand”, is used in place of the watchman’s clock. The physical shape of the wand varies depending on the manufacturer, but is usually a small hand-held device in the shape of a pen or small PDA. The wand is carried by the security officer when on patrol.

“Checkpoint stations” are used in place of key stations. These stations contain some type of device that can be read electronically and are used in place of the mechanical key. Depending on the manufacturer and type of system used, a barcode, magnetic strip, or memory button may be used in the checkpoint station. Like key stations, checkpoint stations are installed at various points along the desired patrol route. When on patrol, the security officer stops at each checkpoint station and scans it using the wand. This causes the location of the station as well as the current time to be recorded in the wand. Most electronic systems also allow the security officer to make a record of any abnormal conditions found at or near the checkpoint station. For example, if a checkpoint station was located at a door, and this door was found unlocked when checked by the security officer, he or she could enter a code indicating that the door was found unsecured. Depending on the system, this code can be entered either on a keypad located on the wand itself, or by scanning the appropriate code in an “incident booklet” that is carried by the officer. At the end of the tour or at the end of each shift, the security officer places the wand into a “docking station”. This docking station is connected either to a printer or personal computer and is used to download information from the wand. If connected to a printer, all information concerning patrol activities can be immediately printed to create a written report. If connected to a computer, the information from

the wand is downloaded into a computer database. This database can then be sorted and various types of activity reports can be displayed on the computer screen and/or printed.

Technology enhancements Many facilities already have an electronic security management system that is used to provide card access control, alarm monitoring, & closed-circuit television monitoring. At these facilities, it is possible to integrate the guard tour system with the security management system. This type of arrangement is known as an “integrated guard tour system”. Integrated guard tour systems use card readers instead of key stations or checkpoint stations. Most often, existing card readers that are already used to control doors are also used as “guard tour” readers, allowing them to perform double duty. If needed, additional card readers can be installed at certain points where guard tour stations are needed and a reader doesn’t already exist. Security guards do not need to carry any special type of equipment such as a watchman’s clock or wand. Instead, they can use a regular access card at the card readers set up as guard tour readers. Special “guard tour” software is provided on the computer that controls the security management system. This software is programmed so that system knows which card readers are to be used as guard tour readers and which access cards will be used by the security guards. When on patrol, the security officer stops at each location along the patrol route and swipes his or her access card at the card reader. This causes the time and location to be recorded into the guard tour software. At any time, a report can

Thermal imaging helps Kalmthout

fire department during wildlife fires and other interventions Kalmthout is located about 20 kilometers north of Antwerp, Belgium. Although being a small village of approximately 20,000 inhabitants the local firefighters are well equipped. Apart from their normal firefighting duties they also need to protect the natural reserve “Kalmthout Heat” against fire. Thermal imaging cameras are since long part of their equipment. hermal imaging cameras are definitely not new to us, explains lieutenant Ronny van Riel, commanding officer of the Kalmthout fire fighters. “We started to use them about 10 years ago. At that point in time we acquired a FireFLIR. The unit works perfectly and has proven its worth.” “Recently we also acquired a FLIR K50. This camera is a lot more compact than the FireFLIR which makes it a lot more practical to carry around. Firefighters clip it easily to their turnout or Self Containing Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and carry it around hands-free until they need the device.” “We have the FLIR K50 mounted in a charger in the truck that always arrives first at the scene. Thanks to its fast start-

up time the FLIR K50 is immediately ready for action when we need it.”

Fire on the Kalmthout Heat Heather stretching to the horizon, purple moor-grass swaying in the breeze, golden bracken fronds, windswept silver birch, chirruping meadow pipits and calling curlews: the Kalmthout Heat. This natural reserve, which a surface of over 8,000 hectares is located in Kalmthout. During the hot and dry summer season this unique and protected area is susceptible to fires. “In 2011 a fire started in the Heath.”, explains lieutenant van Riel. “It spread rapidly and at the end about 600 hectares were destroyed. Extinguishing the fire was a massive operation during which

we were supported by numerous firefighting corpses. Hundreds of firefighters worked day and night, sometimes risking their lives, in order to minimize the damage at this unique nature reserve.” “Also during this operation thermal imaging came into play. “ground fire”. Although not visible to the human eye, the fire rages underground. It can lead to a full outbursting fire, several meters away from it’s last origin. Thermal imaging cameras showed us clearly hot spots in the heath where “undergroud fire” was still raging. By further extinguishing and cooling down the area we prevented spontaneous self combustion.” “Not only did we use our handheld thermal imaging camera for looking at hot spots. Helicopters equipped with gimbal thermal imaging cameras flew over the area and directed us to places where underground fire was raging.”

Protection against rollovers thanks to temperature measurement “When there is a fire we often need to enter in thick smoke. For firefighters it is sometimes hard to see their hands in front of their face. Thanks to a thermal imaging camera they can see through the smoke, see the lay-out of the room and determine if there are still people around. But thanks to the fact that a thermal imaging camera can also measure temperature, it helps to protect our firefighters against a dangerous phenomenon: a roll-over.”

The fire condition known as rollover is a dramatic display of unburned, superheated gases, that gather at the ceiling or upper levels of a fire area. It’s not the materials in the room that are burning, but the flammable gases that are given off by the materials. When these concentrated gases reach their ignition point the temperature in the room will rise rapidely. “If we go inside a building and see that we might be confronted with a roll-over, we closely monitor the temperature of the ceiling with the thermal imaging camera while we try to cool down the smoke. If the temperature exceeds a certain value we know that we can be confronted with a flash-over. In order not to bring the lives of firefighters in danger we need to leave the room before a roll-over can take place. “When we are confronted with a burning building at least two firefighters enter the scene. One is carrying the fire hose and another the thermal imaging camera so that the can show the lay-out of the structure and help his colleague to direct the nozzle pattern where it needs to go.”

Chimney fires A chimney fire often begins with incomplete combustion of fuel . Unburned volatiles are heated to their vapor state but not consumed due to a lack of adequate heat and oxygen within the appliance that is connected to the chimney. Volatile distillates escape into the chimney, where they contact cooler surfaces and condense into tar-like deposits, and soot. Successive layers accumulate until either the chimney plugs completely, or the chimney reaches a temperature and oxygen level at which the deposit will ignite. “When we are confronted with a chimney fire we use the thermal imaging camera to determine the hottest spot in the chimney. This

spots stand immediately out on the thermal image. We can monitor the progress of our extinguishing efforts with the camera.”

More than fire only “Recently we used the FLIR thermal imaging camera to look for a child that got lost in the Kalmthout Heath. Since dusk was arriving we used our thermal imaging cameras during the search since we knew that the cameras would pick up the heat signature of the child. At the end the child was recovered safely without needing the thermal imaging cameras but if not, the cameras would have been a great tool during total darkness.” “Thermal imaging cameras are a great tool for every firefighter for multiple applications. With the FLIR K50 in our primary vehicle and the FireFLIR in our secondary, we are well equipped. Hikvision megapixel cameras secure 2014 FIFA world cup Brazil

H

ikvision, the global leader of video surveillance products and technologies, has been selected to provide comprehensive security solutions to safeguard 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil -- the biggest event on the planet. The security projects include Brazil’s BRT MOVE bus stations and Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte, a host city for the World Cup. Hundreds of Hikvision megapixel network cameras and speed domes have been successfully applied to ensure a safer environment for local citizens and visiting tourists. When it comes time for the Belo Horizonte Traffic Agency to choose a primary security camera, they rely upon Hikvision to make sure both their quality and safety needs are successfully addressed. As such, over 300pcs of Hikvision DS-2CD864F-E 1.3MP WDR network cameras were selected to be installed at the Brazil BRT MOVE bus stations to protect citizens, visitors and their property effectively. This camera, designed with excellent low light capability, allows enhanced imaging performance in low light scenarios with minimum illumination of 0.6Lux

Benefitting from the superior megapixel images delivered by this camera, security personnel will be able to easily identify suspicious individuals and objects at bus stations and their surroundings. The high quality video images could also be provided for forensic purposes if needed. The other remarkable project for the World Cup is the Hikvision security solution for Mineirao stadium surroundings. Mineirao stadium, one of the most iconic venues in Brazilian football, underwent two and a half years of renovation to transform the stadium into a modern, safe, and sustainable arena, with room for over 62,000 spectators. It will be the venue for a total of 6 matches for the World Cup. Hikvision, along with the Military Police of Minas Gerais (PMMG), designed an IP surveillance solution for the streets around the stadium. 74pcs of Hikvision DS-2DF1-57A 1MP high speed domes in total were installed for World Cup security purposes and city surveillance. These Hikvision network speed domes are primarily tasked to protect fans and visitors against riots. The Hikvision DS-2DF1-57A offers a 1280x960 resolution at 25 to 30 frames per second, with an 360° endless pan range at a speed of 540°/s, and a -5°-90° tilt range at a speed of 400°/s. This allows the speed domes to immediately zoom onto

moving objects and deliver crystalclear images, regardless of outdoor light. This is an extremely important feature, since the police need to quickly and accurately recognize and respond to riots or other crime, establishing a secure environment for the World Cup. According to Alvaro de Souza, CCTV manager at VMI Sistemas de Seguranca, Brazil’s official Hikvision Distributor, “Hikvision cameras with megapixel resolution come to meet a real need in the city of Belo Horizonte and for the Military Police of Minas Gerais for identification of suspects, supporting decision making for strategic military actions and protecting citizens during and after the World Cup 2014. Design, image quality, durability, maintenance and local support were key points for this wonderful solution to be chosen. I consider it a major milestone in the history of the Belo Horizonte & this project complements a great legacy of thousands of Hikvision cameras already installed in Brazil.”

Choose right camera to save bandwidth & NVR storage

W

ith each stage of development in high-definition IP cameras, as the megapixels increase, there is a greater emphasis on tailoring solutions to avoid major impact on network bandwidth and storage. As camera features are improved and enhanced, so is the need for greater bandwidth and storage. While H.264 compression enabled widespread use of megapixel resolution, bandwidth and storage are still a major concern for many customers. More industries and organizations have an increased need for greater details and features when purchasing high-definition cameras. From a cost standpoint, storage has an impact on customer purchasing. While storage may seem inexpensive relative to other technology, when a customer adds up the amount of storage needed for a full megapixel deployment, it is not necessarily cost-effective. This results in the purchase of fewer cameras. Fewer cameras may result in security incidents being missed, which can directly impact a business. Face detection technology significantly combats bandwidth &

storage costs. A camera’s ability to detect a face in a scene and send an alarm without increasing bandwidth and storage is key. Superior highdefinition cameras can detect a face and increase the bit rate around it, while still being able to see the surrounding areas in the scene. Think of this as an intelligent region of interest. Customers concerned about bandwidth are generally on “shared networks.” Shared networks are those where traffic from the security devices coexist with traffic from other business functions, as opposed to dedicated networks where only security traffic travels. In applications where capturing quality facial imagery is important, choosing the right camera can make a difference. With some surveillance cameras, you have no choice but to set the resolution and quality high enough to capture the faces with ample clarity. But when those settings are used all the time, whether there is a face in the scene or not, this wastes bandwidth and storage on video that is not important. In other cameras, you might have to crop the image in order to save bandwidth and storage, but this often loses important scene information. The best option is an intelligent surveillance camera which can be set at a lower overall bit rate but one that will boost the quality around faces detected in the scene. This captures high quality face images, but reduces overall bandwidth and storage consumption by not wasting it on less interesting parts of the scene. But those parts of the scene are still available so that important information is not lost.

Too often, significant security events take place at night or in low lighting conditions. The Illustra 600s deliver clean, crisp images even in near darkness. This clarity has a further benefit – reduced storage cost. The “noisy” low light images of some megapixel cameras increase bandwidth and storage consumption.
