Ole M. Granberg, CEO received the “Red Dot Award” during the Red Dot Gala in Essen, Germany, 29 June, 2015.
G
ranberg AS is a leading glove manufacturer of speciality PPE gloves with production in several countries with worldwide market focus. The company was established in 1961, and is headquartered in Norway with European warehouse hub in South Sweden. Granberg AS is rated AAA-maximum creditworthiness by Bisnode. Attracting worldwide attention with new gloves being showcased, Granberg recently won the prestigious Red Dot Award 2015 for outstanding design for its 9001 & 9002 models. During the 60-year history of the international Red Dot award there have never been more competition entries. Of the 4958 teams from 56 countries Granberg AS won the category “Safety Clothing” in product design. These gloves from Granberg AS are designed for extreme working conditions with high risk of cuts and crush injuries, for instance in the oil and gas industry, subsea services, mining & other heavy industries. The gloves provide high cut protection and contain impact-reducing elements on the back. Although the gloves are designed to provide a high level of protection, they are still soft and comfortable, and it is the combination of these properties that make them particularly suitable for use in extreme working conditions. Today design is more important than ever, and to gain an edge in the protective products market, we have spent a great amount of hours in developing the finished product. That is why this
confirmation by the 38 experienced members of the Red Dot jury is so valuable to us at Granberg AS, says Ole Marthon Granberg, CEO of Granberg AS. Recent developments of Granberg include a new anti-vibration glove with exceptional design and great fit certified according to the international standard EN ISO 10819. The gloves reduce the growing problem of HAVS (Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome) which comes from the use of hand-held, vibrating power tools. HAVS is the cause of significant ill health (painful and disabling disorders of the blood vessels, nerves and joints. As much as 1 out of 10 persons that work regularly with handheld vibrating tools may develop HAVS. The symptoms of HAVS is loss of sense of touch, servere pain and numbness, pins and needles in the fingers, loss of grip strength & painful wrist. Another sensational development includes a new type of liquid-proof speciality gloves for drill floors with 360°cut protection and also having impactreducing elements on back of hand. Working in the oil- and gas industry, especially as a rough neck on the drill floor one faces risks from cuts and lacerations, and also crush injuries from container doors, hydraulic doors, heavy drill pipes to hit your hands etc. At the same time the hands are exposed to oilbased muds, lubricants and fluids that cause big healthcare issues. That is why Granberg AS has developed a unique glove providing excellent chemical protection that is liquid-proof, cut- and
impact resistant. The company has received an incredible, world-wide response. Granberg has a wide array of high selling, in-demand PPE gloves with almost 250 styles in total, catering for nearly all types of industries from oiland gas to healthcare. We are indeed a hand-protection dedicated company. All our knowledge and experience we gained during more than 50 years history is dedicated to develop outstanding solutions for hand protection. That’s why we are proud to say we have gloves for almost all applications. And our sales / production development team will do all their best to fulfill requirements from our customers.Says CEO Ole M. Granberg. The success of Granberg’s product development and product portfolio is a result of the dedication of Granberg’s experienced research and development team and its close customer relationships. Leading the research & development team is the company’s chief engineer Mr Urbelis who holds a master’s degree in polymers and textiles, and a PhD in Materials Engineering. With his work spanning several years, the team is equipped with an extensive knowledge of materials science and backed by knowledge from experience in working with high-magnification and resolution microscopy images of innovative materials. Working in a dedicated facility for research, development and testing, the team has brought Granberg to be the leader in creating intelligent designs, with ultimate ergonomics engineered with pride & perfection, and continues to do so, with Granberg as the leading manufacturer of gloves with innovative solutions in hand protection. Granberg AS intends to get a foothold inside the growing market for high quality gloves in India, and the company is determined to grow its business filling the gaps where others have not.

New Safety Standards Require Full Size Exhaust Port Energy Isolation Devices
A
s a pneumatic products user, you are probably already familiar with the omnipresent ROSS L-O-X® lockout valve. Introduced by ROSS 52 years ago, the L-O-X® valve was developed to fulfill our customer’s requirements for safety-related lockout devices. Always striving to lead the industry in innovations, ROSS’ L-O-X® valve actually predated OSHA requirements for energy isolation devices by an impressive 33 years. As time has passed, ROSS has continually improved upon the L-O-X® with TEFLON seals for ease of shifting, an ergonomically designed handle, and an indicator port for verification. The L-O-X® with EEZ-ON® operation model even provides a built in soft start capability for when rapid pressurization could cause hazardous movement of cylinders.
Are the L-O-X® products able to meet the newest standards for energy isolation? Absolutely! Risk assessment industry standards are evolving and require more from your energy isolation devices and systems. For instance, the Canadian CSA Z142, the PMMI B155 and B11 GSR standards are all starting to require the same new four criteria: • The device shall be capable of being locked in the OFF position. • The shut-off device shall be easy to operate (e.g., a simple pull/push action) • The device must have an exhaust port equal to or greater than its supply line • The device must have a pressure indicator (i.e., a gauge), that is visible to the operator indicate whether or notthe pressure in the line has been released
Why Not Ball Valves? When performing a risk assessment, system designers must now take these items into account. The valves have to expedite energy isolation in event of emergency. Some designers choose ball valves, but these may not
allow for quick exhausting. In fact, fill to dump time rations www.ind-safety.com
for some bleed port ball valves can be anywhere from 58 to 200 times that of a full diameter exhaust isolation valve like the L-O-X®. This greatly extended blow down time is generally beyond what would be expected from the user and could lead to a false sense of security and possible injury. Additionally the small orifices can put added strain on inlet seals which then could potentially fail and allow reapplication of energy. Ball valves often use rotary handles which could, in an emergency, be left partially open by accident. The handle could also be locked in a position other than fully off which could inhibit performance of a LOTO (Lockout/ Tagout). It is, unfortunately, possible for the valves to be tampered with so that it is actually activated when it should be locked. These valves don’t allow for a muffler to help prevent potential eye injury from the high pressure escaping air. Additionally, because ball valves are also used commonly for other functions in machinery, the one being utilized as the energy isolation device is often not readily identifiable when needed.
The L-O-X® Solution In order to effectively and efficiently meet the design criteria for these newer risk assessment standards, you can’t beat the ROSS L-O-X® and L-O-X® with EEZ-ON® operation products. They meet all the demands of these standards as outlined above. The ROSS L-O-X® valve: • Block and exhaust function with one operation • Is capable of being locked in the off position only • Has an exhaust port larger than the supply port • Is easily identifiable as the isolation valve • Has a positive handle position for ease of use (simple push/pull operation) • Has a pressure sensing port for pop-up pressure indicator • Is tamper resistant • Allows for integration of a muffler (like the MUFFL-AIR® silencer) to avoid noise-induced hearing loss
Pop-up pressure indicator. A way to verify that all the energy has been released after initiating lockout is by having the valve equipped with a pop-up pressure indicator (see Figure 2-1 & Figure 2-2 for examples of valves with verification devices built in).
Since some systems can contain large volumes of air, the employee can mistakenly think that, once the valve is locked out, all of the energy has been dissipated. To assist in lockout compliance, the pop-up indicator verifies when energy has been completely exhausted and your machine is now safe to inspect. With ROSS’ lockout and exhaust L-O-X® valve with the pop-up indicator, you get that feedback. When used as part of a Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) system, the L-O-X® valve with the pop-up indicator alerts the machine operator as to when the system has been de-energized. Because some systems contain a large volume of air, it is possible for employees to mistakenly assume the system has been deenergized completely when it hasn’t been. This can cause the danger of bodily harm. Steps should be taken to ensure that there is a reliable method of verifying de-energization in order to avoid this danger. When updating your system’s LOTO devices, consider adding a ROSS L-O-X® with a built-in pop-up indicator to the line up. ROSS lockout L-O-X® valvewith full size exhaust port can simplify your safety compliance needs. For more information, Website: www.rosscontrols.com
