Household Gas Detectors by Realty Automation

Schematic Diagram

T

rue safe Gas Detector is ideally suitable for applications where additional safety is required. The detector is positioned in such a way that gas leakage is detected as soon as possible. The output of the detector drives the control valve. Control valve is fitted in gas line. Once the leakage is detected valve cuts off the gas supply in less than 1Sec by shutting off the valve. The valve can be reset or opened only manually. This provides additional safety and allows manual inspection before resuming the gas supply. This model also provides Bar graph indication for level of concentration of gas. Integrated Buzzer & LED indication provides when concentration crosses 10% of LEL. Detector also provides potential free contact output (NC & NO). This can be used to connect Gas Alarm Panels, Intrusion Alarm Panels or Video Door Phones with Gas Sense input. This output remains triggered till gas concentration is above 10% of LEL.

Indian companies leading the way to transform the safety and wellbeing of workers have been recognised with an award from the British Safety Council

T

he British Safety Council has announced the winners of this year’s Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour awards for excellent health, safety and environmental management. 50 organisations across the world and different sectors have been awarded Swords of Honour. With improvements to the safety and health record of the organised sectors of the Indian economy, the 5 award winners from India are leading the way in transforming the safety and wellbeing of Indian workers. Alex Botha, chief executive of the British Safety Council, explains that “India is improving occupational safety and health, with Indian mines seeing fewer fatalities compared to the recent past. Though much more needs to be done for the unorganised sectors such as agriculture and construction, the approach to place greater ownership on industry to manage the risks they create is the right one and we hope this continues and widens.” “With over 2.3 million people in workplaces across the world senselessly killed due to injury or

I congratulate those Indian award winners. The more we can do to promote these awards and the winners, the more we can save lives. “Winning organisations will be invited to London to celebrate and share their success. Our exclusive event will be an enjoyable way to meet others of a similar mind and exchange experiences and knowledge about how best to keep workers safe and well.” The 2014 awards mark the 35th consecutive year the British Safety Council awards the Sword of Honour for health and safety management excellence, and the fourth year of awarding the Globe of Honour for excellence in environmental management. Odisha Police sets benchmark in e-surveillance

O

disha has largely been a peaceful state and has its own share of problems. Many parts of the state are Naxalites hit where law and order is sensitive. To proactively track the activities around police stations, Odisha police decided to equip itself with e-surveillance. The objective was not only to mitigate the corruption and suspicious activities, but also to keep track of suspicious elements and activities. Besides, the police administration wanted to ensure the fair treatment to civilians when they access them at the police stations.

Mission Odisha police has to set a benchmark by ensuring its functions more transparent and people friendly. In a bid to modernize and ensure effective policing in various areas, they decided to secure police stations with installations with closed circuit cameras (CCTVs). These police stations were selected based on their sensitivity and location. Besides, police wanted to safeguard human rights of the people after receiving many complaints of violations. Odisha police wanted to keep a close eye on agitations and demonstrations and record incidences of scripted incidences aimed at tarnishing image of police. The alternative significant objective was to bring chang e in the behavior of the police. Objective, tamper-proof video evidence indeed brings about a significant modification in the behaviors of everyone concerned. This

came up with a tailor made solution for Odisha police.

Solution Overview

The solution involved the following items: CP-EAC-TY60MVFL8-E: High Resolution High range Vari-Focal IR Bullet camera - 80 Mtr This is 600 TVL High resolution Analog IR Camera with 12 Japanese LEDs and a capacity to view even in dark within 80 meters. Also has AGC, AWB and BLC features that help to produce enhanced images in hostile environmental conditions.

CP PLUS team was fully aware of the tactical and situational surveillance challenges at police stations. The team has a challenging task of covering 200 police stations spread across 20 districts. The team observed that the risk for each police station varied from others. The team evaluated the risk and divided it into two parts. One was common risk and another was specific to that area. The local risk included, for example, frequent agitations by local public, loitering by anti-social elements, political agitations over local issues, etc. The specific risk was based on the past history of incidences and their recurrence. Further, the task was to ensure safety of the police staff proactively by tracking activities within and outside police stations. “We leveraged a number of cameras from different locations which were tied into the same network. For general situational awareness, we used standard definition cameras. For our highest tier of tactical surveillance, there was a compelling need for really highdefinition video to arrive at concrete decisions, said, Yogesh Dutta, COO, Aditya Infotech Ltd. Equipped with CP PLUS range and portfolio that gives comfort to any surveillance System Architect flexibility to design foolproof design/solution without any security compromise, the team

All channels can simultaneously playback and offer smart search. Smart video detection can report Motion Detection (MD), camera blank, and video loss.

Result The responsive and precise capabilities of the cameras and DVRs with the extended day/night video resolution equipped police stations with a comprehensive all weather 24x7 surveillance round the year. The surveillance system equipped police stations with much required tactical and situational surveillance. After the huge success of first phase implementation, Odisha police is contemplating to deploy the system to cover other areas of the state as well.

CP PLUS introduces CCTV Power Supplies

C

P PLUS, a world leader in high performance security surveillance products and solutions introduces a wide range of power accessories to ensure smooth and hassle free operations of any surveillance system. The system is dependent on its operating power supply for reliability and ruggedness. CCTV cameras operate on very low voltage that have little tolerance to increases in voltage above the rated input level, most CCTV cameras have a DC voltage input rating of 12V with a tolerance of +/- 10% meaning the maximum applied DC voltage that the camera can handle is 13.2 volts. A faulty power supply can create havoc leading to irreparable damage to the system and thereby reducing its reliability. Besides, incorrectly rated power supplies will either damage or severely reduce the life of CCTV cameras and other equipment. In India, most common issues with the power supply are erratic power and power cuts. The power supply is erratic in most places in India, with huge surge and voltage fluctuations at many places frequently. These voltage fluctuations can damage equipment, thereby causing them to end much before their normal useful life. For power cuts, the generator is most commonly used as a power backup. There are again voltage and ripple wave fluctuations in the backup power supply from these generators. In

Keeping the external dynamic market in mind and the sea of change that has taken place in the fire equipment industry has necessitated and resulted in innovations in products and solutions. Gunnebo’s product mix comprises of Minimax, a highly reliable and trusted brand name which includes fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, fire hoses and couplings, fire ladders and fire blankets, as well as GILPRO, a new brand we recently launched to cater to the needs of commercial establishments. Rapid growth and expansion in Tier II and Tier III cities has led to development of several commercial and retail establishments, and subsequently a higher risk of fire-related accidents. Given this background, there exists an immense opportunity in establishments like malls, hospitals, hotels, educational complexes, super markets and gas stations. The GILPRO brand aims to address the needs of this market segment with its range of fire extinguishers, sprinkler hoses (UL/FM certified), Kitchen Hood protection system and automatic fire suppression system. With our innovative products and solutions, Gunnebo aims to sustain its leadership position as a preferred fire safety solution provider to the Indian market. Today Indians are more aware of their safety and security needs. A recent report titled “India Fire Safety Equipment Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2017” anticipates that the fire safety equipment market is likely to grow in double digits. FACE TO FACE

Spearheading the technology evolution

Mr. Arul Prakash, Vice President- Fire Products, Gunnebo IndiaPvt. Ltd

T

he single most important factor which affects the fire business in India is lack of awareness among the users. Most domestic suppliers supply either spurious or low quality products due to this lack of awareness. It is always important for the customer to insist on manufacturers’ test certificates and also get sample testing done on a random basis in a certified lab. There are clear guidelines designed by the governing bodies for installation and maintenance of safety equipments. Responsible bodies like BIS, NFPA have devised various standards right from manufacturing, installation to maintenance of safety equipments. The standards are devised based on global norms & guidelines bringing together the best across different geographies. Also Government bodies like Maharashtra Fire Services and industry associations like FSAI & FPAI have been active in promoting the need for such standards and the importance of following them meticulously. As a responsible member of the industry, we take initiatives to share as much with our consultants, architects and customers. Gunnebo organisesconsultant/customer meets, dealer meets which are information sharing platforms discussing current issues and taking inputs from the actual users of our products and services. We also release advertisements and articles in safety magazines

46 |

citing the need for genuine safety and not just compliance. We are also members of active associations and forums who actively contribute towards a safer cause. One of the biggest factor affecting the industry is the customers callous attitude towards their own safety needs and hence manufacturers should join hands with government bodies to spread awareness for safety needs and requirements. An effort to keep the customer updated regarding the latest standards, up gradation in norms and enhancement in technology is a culture which needs to be inculcated in the supply chain. Most of the products available in the market are made for customers just to meet the compliance obligations. They are not genuinely capable of clearing fire ratings as they are claimed. Most safety conscious customers find it extremely difficult to differentiate the good from the bad. Hence our entire product marketing strategy has revolved around providing our customers peace of mind when it comes to protecting their people and property. We consistently ensure that our products perform in times of emergency. Gunnebo’s strength has been its commitment to sell only quality products which meet the standards and specifications consistently. The brand loyalty that we have built over 110 years in India is through adopting a non-compromising attitude when it comes to delivering quality and performance to our customers. Most of the customers need advice on proper choice of extinguishers for their premises. For customers who value quality, Gunnebo offers a free site survey and gives recommendations on the type of fire protection devices to be installed depending on the risk levels. Unlike most other products, a fire extinguishers performance is never known to the customer until it is put to test. Even those customers’ who strictly maintain the fire extinguishers as per recommendations of IS:2190, the maximum he comes to know is the readiness of the fire extinguisher to fight a fire. Gunnebo has a state of the art fire testinglab at its facility in Halol, Gujarat which can be used to test the quality of

any fire extinguisher. Customers are encouraged to use this facility free of cost in case they need to test the quality of the extinguishers procured or refilled by them irrespective of the brand. With our range of offerings, we are the most preferred fire security solution provider in the Indian Market. Our products can be applied and used across various segments - in households, small offices, SME’s and Industrial Units. Gunnebo’s range of fire extinguishers such as water, foam, powder, CO2, clean agent type forms an integral part of any building and we are proud to be associated with the biggest names in the marketplace. We also supply the water hydrant accessories like hydrant valves, fire hoses, hose reel drums, hose boxes which are mostly installed in residential and commercial buildings like malls, shopping complexes etc. Apart from this we supply our own UL listed sprinklers and UL/FM certified flexible sprinkler hoses. The root cause for most fires is an electrical short circuit and it usually starts from unmanned areas. To tackle such instances, we have launched FirespotInpanel fire protection System. This product has the potential to protect Panels and Servers from Electrical Fires. Gunnebo FireSpot (Automatic mini fire suppression System) with Halotron I™ media is designed for protection against light and ordinary hazards. These extinguishing systems are suited for both industrial and commercial fire protection needs. Gunnebo has always played a lead role and has spearheaded the adoption of the global standards for fire extinguishers (IS15683) by the Bureau of Indian Standards. When it comes to implementation, customers have developed the attitude to adopt the latest standards only when they are insisted by law. The domestic unorganized market takes advantage of this situation and continues to supply spurious or outdated products. Manufacturers, suppliers and endusers should be equally held responsible and should be punishable by law if found supplying spurious / low quality products. A no compromise approach by the fire safety department is the need of the hour.

LPG safety in industry

M

odern industrial processes at times involve the handling, storage, or transport of gases and vapours that can form gas air mixtures that can burn or explode under certain circumstances. The safe handling of such gases and vapours therefore calls for the adoption of suitable measures to minimise the risk of ignition of such potentially hazardous atmospheres. Liquified petroleum gas (LPG) is one of these flammable gases and needs to be handled with due care to ensure safety of plant and personnel. Industry professionals should therefore gain a degree of familiarity with the basic concepts of hazardous area protection to be able to better address the challenges the safe handling of this gas presents.

Basic concepts So what is a hazardous area? A

hazardous area can be said to be a location in which the probability of the formation of a potentially explosive atmosphere due to operational or other conditions exists. Potentially explosive atmospheres are mixtures of air and flammable gases, dust under atmospheric conditions that allow combustion to propagate after ignition has been initiated. It may be pertinent at this point to mention that all hazardous areas do not present the same level of ignition risk. A system classification on the basis of the risk of ignition is therefore in order.

Hazardous area classification Hazardous areas are classified on the basis of the probability of the occurrence of a potentially explosive atmosphere and how long such an atmosphere can be expected to last. Accordingly there are three zones, commonly associated with industrial processes into which hazardous areas can be classified. Hazardous areas are also called Classified areas. Zone 0 - Zone 0 includes areas, in which an explosive gas atmosphere is expected to be present continuously or over long periods. These areas are typically the insides of tanks, reaction vessels, and equipment like vapourisers etc. Zone 1- Zone 1 covers areas in which an explosive gas atmosphere is expected to be present occasionally under normal operation, such as areas surrounding Zone 0 areas, areas surrounding drains, discharge Continue on page no.72

FIRE INDUSTRY

TECH UPDATE

Continued from page no.70 equipment etc. Zone 2 – Zone 2 covers areas, in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not expected to occur normally and in the event of its occurrence lasts only for a short duration. Typical Zone 2 areas are areas surrounding flanged gaskets, areas surrounding Zone 0 or Zone 1. It needs to be clarified, however that for combustion to take place two other elements – the presence of oxygen/ air and a source of energy are required. Given these three elements, the so called combustion triangle, combustion can take place. However, this requires the presence of the air gas mix in quantities between the Upper and Lower Explosive Limits of the gas and the energy source supplies and simultaneously sufficient energy to raise a small portion of the mixture to ignition temperature which can then trigger a self sustaining explosion.

Lower & Upper Explosive Limits Not all flammable gas/ air mixtures will burn or explode. The concentration of the gas determines the flammability of the mixture, which is different for different gases. The lower limit of this concentration called the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) is the lowest concentration of the gas in air that can cause an explosion, while the Upper Explosive Limit is the maximum concentration of the gas in air beyond which no explosion can take place.

Some common gases and their flammability limits are tabulated below: What are the common sources of energy that can cause ignition? The following sources can provide the energy that can cause an explosion: a) Flames b) Sparks c) Hot surfaces

Flames Flame temperatures range between 1000 C to 2000 C and are the most potent source of energy as they can supply energy at a high rate making them very effective sources of ignition.

Sparks Sparks are produced during the normal operation of many electrical equipment such as push buttons, contactors, etc that can supply enough energy to the surrounding explosive atmosphere to raise the gases in the immediate vicinity to their ignition temperature, which can then cause a self-propagating flame through the whole volume of the gas/air mixture.

Hot Surfaces Electrical equipment also can supply the energy required for ignition from the temperature that their surfaces can reach during normal operation or abnormal operation. When these temperatures exceed the ignition temperatures of the surrounding flammable gases an explosion can

occur. Other electrical components of the system can also become potential sources of ignition in the event of insulation failures e.g. in transformers, impedance coils, solenoids and in the basic wiring system. The normal/faulty operation of electrical equipment, electrical systems etc can be said to constitute a potential hazard in classified areas and special measures have to be therefore adopted to ensure the safe running of electrical system, equipment in such areas.

LPG safety challenges Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is basically commercial butane, commercial propane or a mixture of both and is supplied in pressurised cylinders. LPG cylinders need to be marked with design pressures and temperatures and other information as specified under relevant standards and users must ensure that they have all necessary information to operate the LPG cylinders, systems etc safely. Under normal temperatures and pressures LPG is a gas but is supplied as a liquid under pressure. When the pressure is reduced for example with the opening of the control valve, the liquid starts to boil and gas is release. One litre of the liquid provides as much as 250 litres of gas. LPG is a colourless liquid and has a weight roughly half the same volume of water, however propane and butane vapours are heavier than air. Propane is at least 1 -1/2 times heavier than air and butane is twice as heavy. Propane therefore tends to flow along the ground, and can reach a considerable distance. It can also collect in cellars, drains, Continue on page no.74

Small quantities of LPG can lead to large volumes of hazardous gas/air mixtures given that 2 per cent of the vapour in air can form a flammable mixture. An ignition of the mixture in a confined space can cause an explosion.

Storage LPG cylinders in industrial installations should be at ground level, with the storage area should be readily accessible to allow prompt removal of cylinders in case of emergency. Storage areas should preferably be located in the open air and fenced off by means of a protective fence at least 2 metres high. Such storage spaces should have exits via gates that open outwards and that are not self-locking. The cylinders should have an arrangement that can provide shelter against exposure to extremes of weather. The storage area floor should be paved or compacted level, with suitable hard standing for the delivery and dispatch of cylinders. The storage area should be located away from any flammable material and it should be cleared of all weeds, rubbish etc. These should also be away from drains or cellars and should have permanent notices, prominently displayed, pointing out the hazardous nature of the stored material. Further, the area should also have notices prohibiting smoking and naked lights.

OCTOBER 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

Handling The risk of accidental leakage of gas can be minimised and consequently the major hazard- fire through the adoption of good handling, loading and unloading practices. Damaged or leaking valves can be a source of danger, while a base ring out of shape cannot be hold a cylinder in an upright position.

Transportation During transportation, cylinders, full or empty should be in upright position, with valves at the top and proper means should be adopted to prevent movement. Cylinders should have proper ventilation and an open vehicle should be used where possible. Suitable fire fighting equipment should be ready at hand and the vehicle driver should be trained in matters such as emergency procedures.

Leak detection Regular inspection should be carried out on cylinders, valves, connections, piping and hoses. Leaks can be detected by • Characteristic smell • Sound of escaping gas • Condensation around the leak spot • Bubbles from the suspected leak spot after bushing it with soapy water In the event it is not possible to stop leakage, the cylinder should, immediately be removed to an open space. The space should not have people or buildings in the vicinity, and it should also not have any drains, culverts or hollows. Further,

these should be free from any potential source of ignition in the space. The cylinder should be placed with the leak uppermost, marked with warning notices and the supplier notified urgently.

Precautions against fire risk The storage area should be provided with a sufficient number of fire extinguishers, preferably of the dry powder type, which should be placed at easily accessible locations in the storage area and properly maintained. Automatic alarm systems if installed at the storage area should be properly maintained and regularly checked.

Emergency procedures In the event of an emergency the priority should be to keep people and personnel from harm, and the following actions should be taken: • Call the fire brigade, and police if required. Emergency services personnel should be given the details and location of all LPG stocks. • Apart from those personnel would be actually involved in emergency operations other persons should be evacuated from the danger area. The emergency services personnel should be informed about any persons trapped.

Hearing Protectors and its effect on communication

W

e all are aware of the fact that hearing protective devices (HPDs) reduce user sound exposures when properly worn. This means that all sounds may be attenuated, both unwanted sounds (noise) and useful sounds such as speech and warning signals. Thus wearing HPDs may affect speech discrimination, and the perception of warning signals. This article discusses the magnitude and quality of these effects as a function of hearing level and hearing protector type.

Speech Discrimination Speech discrimination (SD) is a measure of one’s ability to understand speech. It is greatly affected by such factors as a person’s hearing acuity, the signal (speech) - to - noise ratio, the absolute signal levels, visual cues (lip and hand motion), and the context of the message set. SD is measured by presenting to subjects one of a number of prepared word lists, and determining what percentage correct responses they achieve. The effects of HPDs on SD can be evaluated by establishing a set of test conditions, and measuring SD with and without HPDs on the subjects. The results of such tests conducted by many investigators may be summarized as follows: • HPDs have little or no effect on the ability of normal hearing listeners to understand speech in moderate background noise at 80 dBA, butHPDs begin to decrease SD as the background noise is reduced even further. HPDs will decrease SD for hearing impaired listenersin low-tomoderate noise situations. • At high noise levels >85 dBA HPDs actually improve SD for normal

76 |

hearing listeners. For hearing impaired listeners the effect of HPDs on SD at these high noise levels is not unequivocal, but the results seem to indicate no significant Mr. Vinay effect. • The study is not extensive enough to differentiate between the effects of earmuffs and earplugs on SD. Nevertheless it may be said that the higher attenuation devices, be they ear muffs or earplugs, offer greater potential for degrading SD at lower sound levels. The beneficial effects of HPDs on SD can be partially explained by referring to the spectrum where a male voice is superimposed upon a typical industrial noise spectrum of 91 dBA. Although the HPD’s attenuation increases with increasing frequency, at any one frequency both the speech and the noise are reduced equally. The signal to noise ratio is constant, but importantly the overall signal level is reduced. This prevents the ear itself from distorting the signal, a phenomenon which occurs even at levels well below 90 dBA. Thus as long as the speech signal is maintained above audibility, intelligibility can be improved by restricting signal levels to those that will not overload the ear. The preceding generalizations may be modified in practice by three important factors. Typically, in real work environments, communications will be accompanied by visual cues and/or be limited in scope. Missed words can be “filled in” and intelligibility maintained. Studies haveshown that

OCTOBER 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

when the person speaking wears HPDs his speech quality is degraded and this will adversely effect communications. And finally, studies have demonstratedthat employees get accustomed to listenPatak ing in noise and can perform better with respect to SD than do laboratory subjects with equivalent hearing levels. The interaction of these three effects has not been fully evaluated by any studies, but it has shown that visual cues do improve SD for hearing impaired persons wearing HPDs, especially in noise.

Localization Another effect that HPDs can have is to confuse one’s ability to locate the direction of origin of sounds. The data indicate that earmuffs, which necessarily cover the entire ear, can interfere with this localization accuracy whereas inserts, which generally leave virtually the entire outer ear exposed, do so to a much lesser extent. Furthermore, experiments with earmuffsindicate that subjects cannot adapt to this effect, i.e., they cannot learn to compensate for the adverse effects of the muff.

Summary HPDs can be effectively utilized for the preservation of hearing in high noise level environments with minimal effects on SD. For hearing impaired persons, the utilization of HPDs in lower noise level environments should be carefully considered. If localization capabilities are important then inserts should be chosen instead of earmuffs. And finally, the use of amplitude sensitive devices may be advantageous for use on firing ranges where they have been shown to provide adequate protection for limited exposures.

Glove selection : The SWOT analysis

S

kin contact is a potential source of exposure to toxic materials; it is important that the proper steps be taken to prevent such contact. Most accidents involving hands and arms can be classified under four main hazard categories: chemicals, abrasions, cutting, and heat. There are gloves available that can protect workers from any of these individual hazards or any combination thereof. Gloves should be replaced periodically, depending on frequency of use and permeability to the substance(s) handled. Gloves overtly contaminated should be rinsed and then carefully removed after use. Gloves should also be worn whenever it is necessary to handle rough or sharp-edged objects, and very hot or very cold materials. The type of glove materials to be used in these situations include leather, welder’s gloves, aluminum-backed gloves, and other types of insulated glove materials.

Careful attention must be given to protecting your hands when working with tools and machinery. Power tools and machinery must have guards installed or incorporated into their design that prevent the hands from contacting the point of operation, power train, or other moving parts. To protect hands from injury due to contact with moving parts, it is important to: • Ensure that guards are always in place and used. • Always lock-out machines or tools and disconnect the power before making repairs. • Treat a machine without a guard as inoperative; and • Do not wear gloves around moving machinery, such as drill presses, mills, lathes, and grinders. The following is a guide to the most common types of protective work gloves and the types of hazards they

can guard against: 1. Disposable Gloves. Disposable gloves, usually made of lightweight plastic, can help guard against mild irritants. 2. Fabric Gloves. Made of cotton or fabric blends are generally used to improve grip when handling slippery objects. They also help insulate hands from mild heat or cold. 3. Leather Gloves. These gloves are used to guard against injuries from sparks or scraping against rough surfaces. They are also used in combination with an insulated liner when working with electricity. 4. Metal Mesh Gloves. These gloves are used to protect hands form accidental cuts and scratches. They are used most commonly by persons working with cutting tools or other sharp instruments. 5. Aluminized Gloves. Gloves made of aluminized fabric are designed to insulate hands from intense heat. These gloves are most commonly used by persons working molten materials. 6. Chemical Resistance Gloves. These gloves may be made of rubber, neoprene, polyvinyl alcohol or vinyl, etc. The gloves protect hands from corrosives, oils, and solvents. The following table is provided as a guide to the different types of glove materials and the chemicals they can be used against. When selecting chemical resistance gloves, be sure to consult the manufacturers’ recommendations, especially if the gloved hand will be immersed in the chemical.

Baggage Scanners

B

aggage Scanning Machines are commonly deployed to check luggage in detail and also in a short time. When a bag enters the tunnel of scanner, sensors on both side sense it and send a message to a X-Ray Generator which generates X-Rays. The X-rays passes through the bag and makes an image on the screen. The main components of an X-ray Baggage Inspection System are the generator used to generate x-rays, the detector to detect radiation after passing through the baggage, signal processor unit to process the incoming signal from the detector, and a conveyor system for moving baggage into the system.

OCTOBER 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

Understanding X-Rays, MRI and CAT scan X-rays are a type of radiation. They are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, with wavelengths shorter than visible light. Due to their penetrating ability, X-rays are widely used to image the inside of objects. When they pass through the bag, dense objects such as metals block the radiation and appear white on the x-ray film, while less dense objects appear gray and are difficult to see. Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Organs and tissues within the body contain magnetic properties. MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, deploys a powerful magnet with radio waves (instead of x-rays) and a computer to manipulate these magnetic elements to create highly detailed images of structures in the body. Images are viewed as cross sections or “slices” of the body part being scanned. There is no radiation involved as with x-rays. MRI scans are frequently used to diagnose bone and joint problems. A computed tomography (CT) scan (also known as CAT scan) is similar to an MRI in the detail and quality of image it produces. However, a CT scan is actually a sophisticated, powerful x-ray that takes 360-degree pictures of baggage. By combining x-rays and a computer, a CT scan, like an MRI, produces cross-sectional views of the baggage being scanned. These computer-processed x-rays produce tomographic images (virtual ‘slices’) of specific areas of the scanned object, allowing the user to see inside without cutting. Digital geometry processing is used to generate a three- dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional radiographic images taken around a single axis of

rotation. A CT scanner is a hollow tube that surrounds the bag. The X-ray mechanism revolves slowly around it, bombarding it with X-rays and recording the resulting data. The CT scanner uses all of this data to create a very detailed tomogram (slice) of the bag. The scanner is able to calculate the mass and density of individual objects in your bag based on this tomogram. If an object’s mass/density falls within the range of a dangerous material, the CT scanner warns the operator of a potential hazardous object.

Projection radiography Computed tomography. Backscatter imaging. Stereoscopic x-ray screening. Coherent scattering.

X rays are electromagnetic waves in the 10 -8 to 10 -11 meter (3 × 10 16 to 3 × 10 19 Hz) range of the spectrum. Because x rays have more energy than visible light, they can pass through solid objects that are otherwise opaque. However, they do not, in general, pass through them as if they are almost transparent, as air is to visible light. When x rays encounter materials of different densities and compositions, they are absorbed and deflected from their original straight-line paths

TECH UPDATE

(scattered) to different degrees. This property makes is possible for x rays to be used for imaging the interiors of many objects. Projection radiography.

Projection radiography (also termed transmission imaging or fluoroscopy), is the oldest and simplest form of x-ray scanning. In projection radiography, a beam of x rays is directed at an object behind which a detector or x-ray sensitive surface (i.e., electronic-device array or photographic film) is placed. Volumes of different absorptive properties in the object absorb and scatter the incident x rays to different degrees, causing an x ray shadow to be cast on the detecting surface. This shadow pattern is the x-ray image. The two limitations of projection radiography are: a) It can readily resolve only structures that contain strong x-ray absorption contrasts; b) A three-dimensional structure in the x-rayed object is collapsed or flattened onto the image plane, destroying information. Nevertheless, because of their speed, simplicity, and economy, projection-type x-ray systems are still commonplace in security systems that examine cargo, baggage, and other inanimate objects. Airports rely heavily on projection-type x-ray machines to examine carry-on luggage and checked baggage for explosives and weapons. X raying of passengers, however, has

until recently, been out of the question due to the negative health effects of x ray radiation. Computed tomography. Computed tomography (CT, also known as computerized axial tomography, CAT) combines projection radiography with computer processing to recover the three-dimensional information that is lost in a traditional two-dimensional x ray. In a CT scanner, the object to be scanned (e.g., person or baggage item) is placed in a cylindrical or doughnut-shaped device. Inside the cylinder or doughnut is an x-ray source that is mechanically rotated entirely around the object. Also, the cylinder or doughnut is lined with detectors that measure the x rays that pass through the scanned object at all angles. By collating all the information that is gathered during a full revolution of

The X-ray system in a CT scanner rotating around a bag the x-ray source, a computer can form a three-dimensional model of the irradiated volume of the object. This information can then be presented to the user on a video screen in any desired form; most commonly, a thin slice of the object is modelled, with the details of its structure imaged as a black-andwhite cross-section. To examine more of the object, the user looks at multiple slices.

CT scanning provides information not only on gross structure but on material density. In some security CT systems, the scanner is designed to automatically colour-code densities characteristic of explosives or other special substances. CT scanning is computation-intensive and requires rotation of the x-ray source around the scanned object, making this technique slower and much more expensive than transmission-type imaging. However, because CT images not only the geometry but the density distribution of complex three-dimensional structures, including (potentially) explosives shaped into thin sheets and other devices structured to avoid detection, most high security airports have one or more CT scanners. Since it is not practical to put all bags through the CT scanner, only selected or “suspicious” bags are passed through the CT scanner. Backscatter imaging. “Backscatter” consists of waves that

View using a backscatter imaging

86 |

are reflected back from an obstacle. In backscatter imaging, x rays are beamed at a target object and a sensor co-located with the beam source records reflected (backscattered) waves. Since denser objects tend to create more backscatter, backscatter x-ray systems create a density-contrast image that reveals different information about the interiors of the object than does transmission imaging. Transmission imaging and backscatter imaging can provide complementary information hence certain high security military installations deploy x-ray systems that use both transmission and backscatter images. Backscatter imagers for personnel have also been constructed. A typical walk-through backscatter x-ray system can see what is beneath a person’s clothing—including the person. Although this is useful for detecting hidden weapons, it also raises obvious questions of privacy and legality. Although a walk-through of a backscatter imaging system would expose a person to only about 1/7,000 of the dose of a conventional medical x ray, some health physicists argue that frequent flyers and women who are pregnant but do not yet know it might still receive unacceptable cumulative doses from backscatter systems. Stereoscopic x-ray screening. Using specially-constructed sensors it is possible to acquire transmissiontype x ray information that can be formed into stereoscopic images (that is, a left-eye, right-eye image pair

OCTOBER 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

that the user’s brain combines into a three-dimensional impression). Stereoscopic x-ray technology may eventually replace conventional two-dimensional baggage scanners at airports because it provides the operator with additional visualrecognition cues that should increase their chances of correctly identifying weapons. Besides, stereoscopic x-ray scanning is quicker and cheaper than CT scanning, as it requires less computation and does not need to rotate the x-ray source around the object being scanned. It does not provide a fully rotatable threedimensional knowledge of an object nor density data, both of which are provided by CT scanning. Coherent scattering. The atomic orderliness of a substance affects the way in which x- rays are diffracted when passed through it. By recording the scattering patterns characteristic of specific compounds (e.g., drugs, explosives), and comparing these templates to patterns observed when scanning objects, a substance specific detection system can be devised.

Future trends. Several other techniques for imaging object interiors exist, including ultrasound, positron emission tomography (PET), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging, nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) scanning, and neutron emission analysis. Airport security systems, in future, will combine complementary techniques to increase the probability of weapon or contraband detection. Such a system might combine x-ray scanning for suspicious-object detection with neutron emission analysis for chemical identification

SECURITY INDUSTRY

TECH UPDATE

It’s not what you scale – It’s the way that you scale it The Challenge of Multiple System IP Video Management

A

regional or national retail chain is a great example of an enduser customer that would have multiple sites, with multiple video cameras at each site. Let’s suppose that each retail location is roughly 3,000 to 3,500 square feet, and each has from nine to 24 cameras per site. The cameras watch entries and exits, provide coverage of the showroom floor to watch over merchandise and people, exterior cameras monitor parking lots and entrances, and inside a few cameras are dedicated to capturing image detail at the cash register/transaction desk. First and foremost, the video system records activity inside and outside the retail location, providing a record of what happens, so that, in the event of an incident (theft, vandalism, slip and falls) recorded video can be reviewed and hopefully find evidence that will identify “who did what” and will lead to appropriate decision making and resolution. To meet these purposes, a relatively few number of people actually need access to video – the manager of each location, a regional supervisor, security staff, and maybe someone in corporate facilities. If the number of locations and the number of users are relatively small, traditional video management systems (VMS) can offer sufficient

88 |

flexibility to manage those users’ permissions and privileges. As a general guideline, with 10 or more systems to manage, administration begins to get unwieldy.

Growing Complexity… More sites. Suppose an individual in the organization needs to access the local video system at each location. Your master system has to account for that individual user at each site. If that person needs access to 10 sites, you have to manage 10 accounts for that person. That means either: that user needs to remember 10 different logins (one for each system she/he needs to access), or the system manager needs to manage the synchronization of this one user’s account across all those 10 sites. If an administrator is managing across all these remote systems, then she/he has to do this synchronization for each user.

More users. As we’ve noted in the past, a growing trend is that organizations are realizing that video data can be used for more than just security and surveillance. Sales and marketing professionals can use video to analyze traffic flows, to ensure that local stores are displaying appropriate, timely promotional materials. Facilities managers can look for safety compliance and potential issues. And so on. With just a little thought, it’s easy to imagine a growing number of non-

OCTOBER 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

traditional users. That means there will be a need to support more and more users.

More reach. As an organization grows, the reach of a single employee is continuing to expand. She/he needs to see more and more sites, and access more and more systems. Additionally, the people who report to this individual now need access to additional sites. His direct reports need video – this expands the user base. We are also broadening the types of users. We’re introducing new user profiles that require different sets of permissions. We need to set additional parameters — who can access video? Which cameras can they access? What frame-rate can they stream? How do we accommodate law enforcement access to video? How do we provide video for regulatory oversight? This

www.ind-safety.com

SECURITY INDUSTRY

TECH UPDATE

brings increasingly complex sets of user roles and permissions. With each new site and each new user, the administrator’s job becomes complex and burdensome.

How to deal with it all? One possibility is that every time a site is added, managers could add staff to deal with administration, but this is fraught with risk: It’s costly to hire new people, it opens the system up to multiple human-error mistakes across all systems, and without careful controls, permissions can lapse, and people who’ve left the company can still access video. Another choice is to deploy a centrally managed VMS (VideoManagement System) solution, in which the core head end is in your central location, with satellite/remote systems. The advantage of this approach is a single user-store-repository, a single set of permissions to manage, a single set of accounts to manage. However, this approach requires a very reliable connection between remote systems and central system, because every time remote users log in, they need to authenticate to central system. This type of approach is very network- dependent

www.ind-safety.com

and tends to be very expensive. Another approach would be a mini-federation, by placing a federated server at each location. This approach mitigates the realtime network-dependency problem; however, when network connection goes down, you still have to deal with reconciling any conflicts that occur when people change records/data while the central system is down. Also, this tends to be expensive — because it requires adding an expensive high-end federation server at each site in addition to the existing remote system. Or, facilitators could purchase a set of DVRs and network video recorders (NVRs) and create a system to centralize the management of those accounts by writing to each DVR’s/ NVR’s application programming interface (API) to coordinate with

some sort of user database based on LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). It’s similar to a centrally managed system, but users benefit from the use of software development kits (SDKs) for automatic updating. There are costs, and there are limits by the capabilities of the NVR SDK.

An Aggregation Solution The solution that Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ is moving forward with is aggregation. System aggregation uses a virtual machine (an aggregation server), which can be installed anywhere in your network, to unite various remote systems. The benefit of the aggregation server is that it allows you to deploy individual (remote) systems, but at run-time, you can access all systems and pull up the current state of permission access. You can add users, change users’ roles, and you can push updates out to remote systems. System aggregation leverages the data store at each remote system. You don’t have to maintain one single, centralized system representation. Instead, you’re always getting the latest state of the system when you log in and call up the permissions store, because it’s the aggregate of the permissions on all of the systems you’ve aggregated.

The regional distributor Bellfone Distributor and local security system integrator Invert Systems were commissioned for the task. VIVOTEK cameras were the immediate choice of Bellfone Distributor and Invert Systems among numerous market-available brands because of their excellent quality and reliability. Alpha-Digi, VIVOTEK’s national distributor in Brazil, plays an important role in supporting both system integrators’ equipment procurement. To satisfy the requirements of the security plan, 44 VIVOTEK cameras were installed, comprising the IP8332, IP8335H, and FD8136 models, to upscale the entire security system within the department.

Excellent quality and reliability satisfy the requirements of the fire department The project commenced on 27 March 2014, successfully installing 11*IP8332 models, 28* IP8335H models, and 5*FD8136 models in and around the department. The IP8335H network bullet camera is characterized by an HD WDR CMOS sensor for use in light-challenging conditions. The WDR Pro feature of the camera utilizes a double shutter technique to capture the dark and bright regions of an image, which are then combined to produce true-tolife images. The IP8332 camera features a removable IR-cut filters and IR illuminators that are effective up to 15 m. In addition, the camera is housed in a weatherproof casing, allowing it to withstand harsh or unstable weather conditions, rendering this model ideal for a variety of outdoor applications that require open

and selectable focal lengths, which renders the model ideal for compact or enclosed spaces such as lifts. In order to centralize and efficiently manage video at the fire department, VIVOTEK’s professional central management software VAST was introduced. With intuitive functions and numerous features, the 44 cameras are well managed in a hierarchical system structure, enabling the monitoring, recording, playback and event trigger management with ease-of-use and efficient control.

angles. Subsequently, this camera model was deployed in numerous outdoor and patio areas around the department, and in the basement. The FD8136 is a quite small network fixed dome camera. This model features Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality, which makes installation quick and easy,

Exponential Improvement of Security Infrastructure Following the upscaling of the department’s security system, relevant personnel have expressed that the project was a great success, and onsite security has improved exponentially. Stationed guards now have

access to a comprehensive layout of the entire department from the monitoring room, making it easier to identify the weak points where patrols should be reinforced. With the responsibility of safeguarding the lives of countless citizens, Bombeiros do Estado de São Paulo, like all fire departments worldwide, is a hallmark for security. Protecting others is a persistent goal of the department, yet the safety of the premises is equally important. In this context, scaling suitable products that satisfy specific clients with a high level of strategic knowledge can be quite challenging. Nevertheless, VIVOTEK fulfilled all client demands, and all parties involved expressed a high level of satisfaction for the outcome of this project.

GANZ dual head cameras with thermal and general imaging solutions

G

ANZ Dual head camera (Model ZT-PTD) is a powerful two in one camera which provides normal video images as well as thermal images and thus ensures round the clock Video surveillance. The camera has two inbuilt Module one36X Optical for Normal Video surveillance imaging and a thermal Module for providing infrared images. A normal optical Module cannot detect or see during pitch dark conditions at all. Moreover the optical Module cannot see during heavy rain, snow or fog unlike Thermal Module. This two in one camera is therefore the perfect bet for allweather surveillance requirement for high stake premises and establishments where the security cannot

be compromised even for a minute. The powerful thermal Module can detect a man up to 1.4 km and a car at a distance of 4 Km; making it easy for any possible intrusion to be detected at a very early stage. It’s a very robust and rugged kind of camera manufactured by CBC Japan under its brand Ganz with IP 68 standard housing suitable for harshest kind of outdoor Weather requirement. The camera is certified for its ruggedness after successfully passing a number of tests like salt spraying for 1000 hrs. Wind tunnel test at 144 Km/Hour, shock and Vibration test etc. The other benefit of this camera is that it can pan and Tilt

complete 360 degree ensuring no blind spot unlike other PTZ cameras which cannot tilt more than 180 degree. The camera can work in a temperature range of -40 to +55 deg. The camera uses uncooled detector inside thermal Module which makes it economical as compared to a conventional thermal camera. This price advantage makes this camera suitable for even commercial and public application other than Industrial, Government and Military applications. The ability of the camera to see through obstacles like fire, smoke, fog, heavy rain etc. make it suitable for disaster Management Vehicles like Anti-Riot Vehicles, Firefighting Van and Buses etc.

Johnson Controls sees smart buildings as the future for smart cities in India Building Technology & Services expert shares insights on smart buildings at the 12th India Green Building Congress

Dennis Kelsey at IGBC Hyderabad

J

ohnson Controls, a global multiindustrial company, will present the importance of smart buildings in helping India achieve its goal of creating smart cities - cities that are highly advanced in terms of overall infrastructure, sustainable real estate, integrated communications and technology, energy management and governance - at the 12th India Green Building Congress 2014 (IGBC). Dennis Kelsey, director, Building Technology & Services, Asia, Johnson Controls, will share how smart buildings are vital to supporting the government’s ‘100 smart cities’ project announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in July. The IGBC event, held in Hyderabad from 4 to 6 September 2014, focuses on advancing India’s green building movement. According to a UN forecast, 66 per cent of the global population will live in urban

www.ind-safety.com

areas by 2050, and India is projected to add 404 million urban dwellers. Approximately 500 new cities will need to be built across the country to accommodate the influx of new urban migrants. “With the rise in rural-urban migration, the need for smarter cities to overcome the load on urban land is a must,” says Kelsey. “Keeping in view the Indian government’s plans for smart cities, it is vital for India to make investments in smart buildings today, in order for them to achieve this goal.” “Smart buildings deliver integrated lighting, improved comfort and air quality, greater physical security, and better sanitation at the lowest cost and with less environmental impact over a building’s lifecycle. This enables businesses and occupants to achieve better performance in sustainability, productivity and energy efficiency,” said Kelsey.

Today, technology is available to make buildings smart, but to realize the full potential of smart buildings, integrating building systems that communicate to improve operations is key. Johnson Controls offers a solution, Technology Contracting, which converges individual systems into a single networking solution. Design decisions are made before any major building construction begins, supporting owners’ building and business objectives. This trend, currently popular in North America, is now gradually moving to Asia, observes Kelsey. For nearly 130 years, Johnson Controls has been delivering products, services and solutions with the aim of increasing energy efficiency and lowering operating costs in buildings. As a leading smart green building provider, the Fortune 100 company possesses the capabilities to deliver smart building solutions that include design, integration and management of multiple systems under various vendors, contracts and proprietary protocols. Examples include Ave Maria University in the United States and Shanghai World Financial Center in China. “Johnson Controls has the global expertise in facilitating smart buildings, and our subject matter experts can help India accelerate its transformation to a smart future,” concluded Kelsey.
