CEO CORNER Fire Safety & Protection System Market: The brighter future ahead India has witnessed a substantial increase in terms of awareness about fire safety and security. As large refineries, petrochemical complexes, biotechnology ventures, pharmaceutical, automobile, steel, oil & gas exploration projects need to comply with various mandatory fire safety regulations, it has contributed largely to the growth of the country’s fire & safety market. India’s fire & safety equipment market is expected to reach USD 4.94 billion by the end of 2019. However, due to lack of awareness, stringent regulations and a common perception of fire safety equipment being perceived as an unproductive outlay, the market potential is still largely untapped. The fire protection systems market is expected to be worth USD 93.46 billion by 2022, growing at a CAGR of 9.7% between 2017 and 2022. The current marketplace is expected to be driven by increased fire-related expenditure of various enterprises, along with the rising trend of automation in commercial buildings and smart homes. In addition, improvement in the existing government regulations and mandates regarding fire protection systems are driving this market. Factors restraining the growth of the FPS market include the high implementation and maintenance costs of fire protection systems, and lack of integrity in system interfaces. Several types of products for sensing, detecting, and suppressing the fire are available in the market, including wet-pipe sprinkler systems, dry-pipe sprinkler systems, preaction sprinkler systems, and deluge sprinkler systems. The suppression systems also include various extinguishers such asCO2, dry chemical, wet chemical, and waterbased chemicals. The robust growth in infrastructure, utilities, and facilities is bringing in the need for a higher adoption of suppression systems across the globe. FIRE INDIA 2017 which will be commencing from 7 to 9th September,2017 is India’s leading Fire and Safety show, acts as a bridge between industry buyers, suppliers making it the ultimate platform for the industry to meet, exchange ideas, share knowledge, network and grow together. INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW magazine being media partner will be actively participating in the show to witness latest trends among the industry. Our Fire India Special Edition will be featuring key professionals from the industry talking about current dynamics and future trends. Hope you will enjoy reading it.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Pankaj Dharkar, National President, FSAI said, “In today’s world, digitisation is playing the most important role in achieving efficiency in every industry. Leveraging the technological evolutions, our aim is to create State-of-the-art buildings that addresses the need-of-the-hour of being Green and Sustainable. wake of increasing accidents over the years on account of spurious installations or electrical faults, there is also a pressing need for standardization of safety standards in the electrical equipment industry in India. In this regard, we are happy to be associated with Schneider Electric which brings lot of expertise to address fire and safety issues in buildings.” During the event, Schneider Electric also showcased its latest solutions through its Ecostruxure architecture for buildings and the real estate industry. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shrinivas Chebbi, President, Building Business, Schneider Electric India, said “We’re proud to be the technology partner at PACC 2017 and it’s a matter of privilege to be amongst the Industry stalwarts. Together with FSAI we want to encourage the adaptation of standard and type tested electrical assemblies including digital architecture to ensure robustness and safety from the start. In line with FSAI’s motto to make Surakshit Bharat, Schneider Electric seeks to provide solutions and standards to ensure growth
and safety.” Containment of damage caused by fire is one of the most important area that needs to be addressed today in India. As per the fire department records, fire accidents resulting from electrical faults and short circuits have seen a 10-fold jump over the last six years. In the industrial sector, 56% of industrial incidents is caused by electrical faults. Substandard electrical infrastructure in a building results in huge losses in terms of human life and assets. However, an integrated automation approach encompassing all systems, espcially electrical equipment in buildings, can prevent critical damage to life and wealth. The event aims at keeping the industry professionals at par with the developing technology, and to encourage discussions on standards, codes and best practices. Fire and Security Association of India (FSAI) is a non-profit organization representing the Fire Protection, Life Safety, Security, Building Automation, Loss Prevention and Risk Management domains committed towards
making a ‘Surakshit Bharat’. It aims to work closely with the Government and all other stakeholders to enable the Indian fire and security industry to reach global pre-eminence with better regulatory framework. FSAI has over 2,500+ members including leading 400+ global and Indian corporates and large number of top-notch Indian and 1,000+ global professionals including leading architects, consultants, and end-users.

Godrej Security Solutions urges women to take charge of their security Godrej Security Solutions, India’s leading security solutions provider, kick started a multi-city consumer awareness programme and campaign #IAmSecure. The objective of this campaign, the first leg of which was held today in Mumbai at Godrej One, is to create awareness among women to be more proactive and take charge of their own security, educate them about the various solutions and also educate them about the importance of learning self-defense for leading a safer and secure life. The event witnessed participation of over 150 women from different walks of life pledging to take charge of their security. The event began with famous Indian Stand-up Comedian Atul Khatri taking a humourous dig at the security preparedness among citizens in India. This was followed by a panel discussion on ‘Safety and security for women is a fundamental right’, which was moderated by Sunil Mehta, Senior Vice President & Area Systems Director - Central Asia, JWT. The panelist included: Mehernosh Pithawalla, Global Head - Marketing, Sales & Innovation, Godrej Security Solutions Division, Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd; Sandhya Shetty, model, actor, TV presenter and karate champion; Harshada Patil, legal expert on cases pertaining to sexual harassment, senior representatives from the police force.
According to a recent report by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in India, every day 312 burglary, 99 robbery, and 1281 theft cases are recorded. Women, children and senior citizens are the victims of such gruesome incidents. Addressing the event, Lata Dattatray Sutar, DIG, said, “While the police department is working relentlessly to ensure safety and security of women in the society, it is also important for women to become more aware of their surroundings, rights and take charge of their security. A collaborative effort will further help to fight against this issue.” Adding to Lata’s opinion, Mehernosh said, “One of the biggest impediments to the adoption of security solutions in India has been a reactive attitude towards adopting solutions to safeguard one’s valuables and loved ones. Society is getting more techrich and empowered, and yet we remain as vulnerable to crime as before. Today’s safety and security anxieties are tied up not just with personal safety, but with safety of our loved ones at homes, workplaces, schools and campuses, public places and so on. Hence it is important that women too now take charge of their security and pledge to
keep themselves as well as their families secure too. We need to make a fundamental change in our behaviour and be more proactive about security.” Sandhya Shetty, who spoke in detail how learning Karate made her feel more secure and confident opined, “As they say, prevention is better than cure. It is important that women should learn self- defense and be more aware of their environment and the security threats. I firmly believe that learning self-defense improves agility, alertness and adds to your confidence too as it reduces your dependencies on others for security.” Godrej Security Solutions introduced it latest range of WiFi enabled DIY CCTVs called EVE. The Eve series is capable of directly streaming videos to the mobile handsets of the home owners, and helps one to watch over their loved ones from across the world. The EVE range of CCTVs has an auto- record function. Godrej Security Solutions introduced three of their latest innovations on this platform. The three products are a plug and play wifi enabled CCTV camera that allows you to watch over your loved ones from across the world on your phone, wifi enabled video door phone and a plug n play burglar alarm system called Eagle I-Lite that raises an alarm when unusual motion is detected.

government has managed to save INR 36,144 Crore over the course of last two years by directly transferring benefits via the Aadhaar Payment Bridge. In February this year, Gujarat became the first state in India to set up a cashless
system in its food grain PDS. AEPS was installed in approximately 17,250 fair price shops to make sure that people eligible for subsidised food grains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) would only need to present their Aadhaar

wallet licence from the RBI, way back in 2015, since then Spice money has spread far and wide with the conviction to bring technology solutions to financial needs of the masses. Spice Money has, in fact, crossed the 550 crore mark GMV in the month of July 2017 thus solidifying its credentials in the post demonetization era. Aadhaar Enabled Payment System is yet another offering by SDL. Starting off humbly with a business volume of 6.4 Crores and a total of 1,576 transacting counters in January 2017 Spice Money has spread its base far and wide with the figures standing at a total business volume of 65 Crores and 10,000 transacting counters till July.
India is a nation deficit in the required no. of ATMS. According to the recent statistics by Central Bank there is one cash point for every 6,500 Indians. AEPS biometric transactions are a convenient alternative to cashless payments and ATM services. Even for the banks, setting up and maintaining an ATM unit requires a certain amount of spending, AEPS transactions will not only be convenient for the end consumers, it will all be an economical solution for banks. Needless to say, rural areas and the underprivileged of the nation are the worst affected. Daily wage earners often find it difficult to avail banking services due to the hassles of formality and time.
Visiting ATMs or even for that matter always keeping cash in hand is a cumbersome job. Spice Money counters enabled as Mini-ATM via AEPS, will make life much simpler. With spice money retail outlets reaching far and wide, walking miles to find an ATM will no more be a hassle. Aadhar enabled payments made via biometric verification are not only convenient but also safe. In support of the government’s vision and endeavours toward a cashless economy, Spice Digital is gradually paving the way toward digitization in the farthest corners of our nation. Spice Digital Limited is an organization that moves ahead with the times and has
chosen to extend the benefits of a changing economic environment by offering biometric transactions to the remote areas of India through Spice Money. While making AEPS accessible to the sections of India that rarely feature on the economical map of the country. Mr. Saket Aggarwal, Global CEO, Spice Digital said, “With 30,000 direct retail points and 100,000 counters of alliance partners, Spice Money has established its roots deep and is only reaching further ahead while growing steadily. Spice Money is in the process of enabling all their counters with AEPS consistently while adding to the existing number of counters.”

StorNext 6 also enables client platforms to browse archive directories that contain offline files — which can number in the hundreds of thousands, or even millions — without having to retrieve the entire directory. As a result, this feature significantly streamlines the archive retrieval process, enabling users to get the files they need more quickly.
File Copy Expiration for Increased ROI and File Auditing for Deeper Insights
Multi-Site File Replication and Sharing for Easier Collaboration One of the key challenges in highly dataintensive environments such as genomics, academic research, video surveillance and government security is enabling dispersed teams to work together using a common data set for creative, analytical or other purposes. StorNext 6 addresses this challenge with two new features, FlexSync™ and FlexSpace™: • FlexSync provides a fast, flexible and simple way to synchronize data between multiple StorNext-based systems in a highly manageable and automated fashion. It supports one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-one file replication scenarios and can be configured to operate at almost any level: specific files, specific folders or entire file systems. • FlexSpace allows multiple instances of StorNext — and geographically distributed teams — to share a single storage

Enhanced StorNext-Client Functionality for Greater Agility High-performance file storage users may have dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of clients accessing a system at any time, which can hinder workflows and create other inefficiencies. To address this problem, StorNext 6 includes a new quality of service (QoS) for optimizing performance across all client workstations, and on a machineby-machine basis, to align with business priorities. Users can: • Allocate more bandwidth to individual workstations for more demanding applications involving urgent projects. • Set parameters so that less time-sensitive
As the foundation for a single, integrated solution that can span a single namespace across flash, spinning disk, object storage, tape and the cloud, StorNext has long reduced overall storage costs through tiering. StorNext 6 adds: • A new copy expiration feature, enabling automated removal of file copies from more expensive storage tiers, thereby freeing up space and increasing the overall return on investment. • The ability to track changes in files across the data lifecycle and report who changed a file, when the changes were made, what was changed and whether and to where a file was moved — all of which provides administrators with greater file management granularity and insight into usage patterns and helps support compliance requirements.
Availability StorNext 6 is now shipping with all newly purchased Xcellis appliances and is also available at no additional cost to current Xcellis users running StorNext 5 under existing support contracts.

SCC & Western Digital discussed the role of surveillance for safer and smarter cities Emplacing the manifesto for cooperation between authorities, civil bodies and technology providers, the Smart Cities Council India (SCC) and Western Digital on Friday held a round table conference session on “ Role of Video Surveillance Systems in making cities safer ” which brought alive the current state of surveillance security in India, the challenges and sustainable solutions to help urban planners understand the framework of a smart city and take steps to improve infrastructure. This initiative is in unison with the vision of ‘Smart Cities’ for which the role of data and IT, especially video surveillance in enhancing security will play a pivotal role. The event witnessed a welcome address by Pratap Padode, Director & Founder, Smart Cities Council India; keynote address by Shri Gaurav Gupta, Principal Secretary, IT, BT, ST, Government of Karnataka , Khwaja Saifuddin, Senior Sales Director - South Asia, Middle East and Africa, Western Digital and R Sri Kumar, Chairman & Founder, Indian CST & Former Vigilance Commissioner, Central Vigilance Commission, India. The discussion highlighted the limitations of Indian standards in video surveillance and the importance of strong safety and surveillance policies in India with the focus on possible solutions to make Bengaluru a Safe and Smart City. Making it a truly respected platform for valuable exchange of ideas, industry experts on technologies along with urban development officials covering

Speaking at the event, Khwaja Saifuddin, Senior Sales Director - South Asia, Middle East and Africa, Western Digital, said, “With smarter cities, comes smarter responsibilities and video surveillance is one of them. The process of video surveillance involves a lot of data generation which needs to be stored for future analysis and monitoring. Therefore, it is imperative to set the video surveillance standards in place to ensure high quality and sustainability. The surveillance ecosystem players need to work together to achieve a common goal of enabling smarter and safer cities at a faster pace.” The discussion centred on the need of smart surveillance shaping smart cities and how

to transform surveillance video from cost burden to value-added asset. Additionally, the need of city administrations to focus on installing and upgrading defined specification of cameras, storage systems and allied technologies and incentive to help propel the formation of sustainable smart cities. On the occasion, Gaurav Gupta, Principal Secretary, IT, BT and ST, Government of Karnataka said, “Bangalore being the Silicon Valley of India, should always lead in prospective of technology modernization. Hence, such initiatives will boost Indian Government’s Smart Cities Mission and make Bangalore an ideal example in the league. Effective surveillance, secure infrastructure is important to ensure a safer environment. Hence, technology enablers and government should work jointly to achieve smart cities vision. Sharing his viewpoint, Mr. Pratap Padode, Executive Director & Founder, Smart Cities Council India, said, “Public surveillance cameras can play a pivotal role in city’s security if CCTV Systems are implemented and employed responsibly. There need to be an emphasis on instating right surveillance standards and in-
dustry best practices for effective surveillance that ensures safety and peace of mind for citizens. As Bengaluru authorities have already in the process of stepping up surveillance through installation of around 5,000 new CCTV cameras across the city, it has to be more than just an exercise. The technology capital of the state should lead by example and set up best standards for video surveillance using latest technology by installing and upgrading defined specification of cameras, storage systems and allied technologies.” The stakeholders in unison concurred that investing in the latest video surveillance technology with highest-resolution cameras, best quality analytical tools and highest capacity storage will help lead to smart surveillance systems for secure and safe areas, with a goal of achieving less crimes, 24x7 surveillance, and safer environments for city inhabitants. In January 2017, SSC in support with Western Digital had organized a similar roundtable in Delhi and launched a report on “Role of Surveillance in Securing Cities” which highlighted the need for surveillance and the role it plays in making our cities secure and smarter. One of the key survey findings was that ‘large storage capacity’ came up as a high priority. As hard drive technology continues to advance, it is important to help ensure that storage is scalable and futureready to enable longer retention cycles and broader analytical capabilities.

Q. Being a key player in the industry, please tell us the company’s journey from inception and share some of the milestones achieved? RedHerring Plast India Pvt. Ltd. came into existence in the year 2005 and was established by Mr. Kamal Aggarwal, a veteran with over 37 years of experience in the field of hoses. We have come a long way since our humble beginnings. At the time of inception we were offering hoses for different applications, including sanitary hoses, welding hoses, washing machine hoses, etc. We introduced fire-fighting hoses in 2010 and in the short span of two years gained the position of the top supplier because of our quality products. Today, we have significantly expanded our portfolio and customer reach and supply products throughout the country through our vast network of dealers and distributors. We also cater to several leading OEM clients across India.
Q. Please brief us about company’s infrastructure and quality policy? Being an ISO 9001:2008 company, RedHerring Plast has a very stringent quality control policy. Our state-of-the-art production facility backed by in-house R&D and quality control department helps us provide quality products to our clients and meet their expectations. We have an installed capacity of 5 lakh meters of hoses per month. To ensure optimal quality, we have a corporate quality policy wherein we have incorporated mandatory quality checks at all the possible stages commencing from raw material, production stage to the dispatch stage.
Q. Brief us about your product offerings. What is your marketing strategy in India? Our product range includes thermoplastic hoses, rubber hoses, fire hose reel, fire
extinguisher discharge hoses, shut off nozzles, double door hose boxes, landing valves, C.P. Hose, R.R.L Hose, branch pipe and coupling. To tap the Indian market, we are strengthening our network of dealers and distributors and are focused on effectively and efficiently catering to our clients, ensuring utmost satisfaction. We strive to upgrade our products as per the current market trends and constantly conduct R&D activities to keep pace with the evolving trends.
Q. Product innovation through R&D is vital to be a leader in the marketplace. In your opinion, how important is the role of R&D in success? Any industry requires long-term solutions to stay ahead and this is where research and development comes into the picture and plays a vital role. After all, the road to innovation begins with R&D. In today’s world the ability of a manufacturer to innovate and adapt to its customers’ requirements is an imperative. Those who fail to do so, face the risk of being left behind. Manufacturing flexibility has never been as important for industry as it is today.
Q. How do you perceive the future of the Fire & safety equipment market in India? Fire & safety equipment market in India is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 8% during 2016 - 2021 on account of increasing industrialization, commercialization and urbanization. In 2015, firefighting equipment segment was the largest segment in the country’s fire & safety equipment market. The segment grabbed a
share of more than 60% in 2015 and is likely to be driven by increasing government focus towards industrialization, infrastructural development and commercial construction. The industrial sector is expected to hold the largest share in the country’s fire and safety equipment market through 2021. Western Region dominates fire & safety equipment market in India, driven by increasing demand from refineries, petrochemical, city gas distribution and gas based power plants in the region.
Q. Please update us about the vision for your company in the near future? By continuing to provide top quality products and ensuring total satisfaction of our clientele, we aim at attaining the position of number one supplier in the field of firefighting equipment in India. We are also committed to strengthen our position in the discerning international clientele as a reliable supplier from India.
Q. In your view, how will GST impact the fire, safety and rescue business? Fire, safety and rescue industry is not a fashion or luxury product business. It plays a very significant role as it ensures safety of both the life and property. Before the implementation of GST, the taxation applicable was 0% but with GST, the taxation is 28%. This levying of tax is expected to become a hindrance in the adoption of fire safety practices as it will put additional pressure on the end users.
Q. What message would you like to give to the readers? As products under the category of fire, safety and rescue are aimed at protecting and saving of life, there is no room for negligence. Life is precious and one should not risk it with cheap products.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | AUGUST 2017
Q. If you have to explain the technology behind your products to a new person, how will you do that. This is an interesting technology. As a theory, almost all objects around us emit infrared(IR) radiations which our eyes cannot see. See image below- Infrared energy (A) coming from an object is focused by the optics (B) onto an infrared detector (C). The detector sends the information to sensor electronics (D) for image processing. The electronics
translate the data coming from the detector into an image (E) that can be viewed in the viewfinder or on a standard video monitor or LCD screen. Infrared thermography is the art of transforming an infrared image into a radiometric one; every pixel in a radiometric image is actually a temperature measurement, so temperature values to be read from the image. This makes the thermal imaging camera a perfect tool for firefighting applications. Since IR radiations are everywhere, these cameras have application almost at all the places.
Q. What are main firefighting applications for these TIC. The main applications are listed below:a) Seeing through SmokeThermal cameras can see through smoke, giving firefighters better situational awareness, both of where they are in the building, and where they are in relation to

their team members. It also helps them find people trapped in the fire. Thermal cameras are also vital tools when helping firefighters attack the fire. Obviously, the fire itself is easy to see in a thermal imager, but the relatively cold water being sprayed from the hoses also shows up clearly on a thermal image, so firefighters can make sure they get water on the fire as effectively and efficiently as possible. b) Measuring Temperatures K-Series thermal cameras can measure temperature from a distance, helping protect firefighters against a dangerous phenomenon called rollover – the stage of a fire in which unburned, superheated gases gathered at the ceiling in an enclosed area ignite. By monitoring the temperature of the ceiling with the thermal camera while trying to cool down the smoke, they can know that if the temperature exceeds a certain value a rollover may be imminent and react appropriately. c) Search & Rescue Firefighters do more than fight fires – often they’re called on to find missing or injured people. A thermal camera’s ability to see in the dark makes it an invaluable tool in SAR missions. d) Wildfires Thermal imaging cameras show clearly the hot spots where “underground fire” is still burning. By further extinguishing and cooling down the area spontaneous combustion can be prevented. e) Overhaul During Overhaul the burned area is carefully examined for hot spots that can cause the fire

to reignite. These “hot spots” will clearly show up on a thermal image so that they can be further cooled down or extinguished
Q. How this camera helps to prevent Fire? Thermal Imaging is an effective tool to prevent fire which happen due to loose electrical connections. Thermal Camera can see the heat being generated by loose connections much before our eyes can notice. If proper preventive maintenance schedule is followed and preventive action is taken, this can prove to be a very effective equipment for fire prevention applications.
Q. Thermal Cameras used to be very costly. How come your new fire fighting camera is priced so low. FLIR makes more thermal Imaging cameras in a year than any other manufacturer. Wherever thermal cameras are being used – in applications as diverse as predictive maintenance, building diagnostics, R&D, automation– FLIR is there. This incredible volume of cameras lets us produce them more affordably and pass that savings on to customers.
Q. Are there any new developments? what are latest new features in these devices ? Yes, there are, as listed below. a. Being able to store video clips on an internal memory is important during firefighting training. Also real interventions can be recorded. Video clips can be evaluated afterwards for training purposes. FLIR K55 can store 200 files (images or video clips). It records up to 600 minutes in video in clips of maximum 5 minutes each. b. K-Series cameras can be upgraded over the
internet by downloading the latest firmware updates, so users will never have to send their cameras back for routine upgrades. c. Flexible Scene Enhancement (FSX)- Details in the thermal image are enhanced through digital image processing inside the camera. The result is an ultra-sharp thermal image that shows more detail. FSX makes it easier for firefighters to find their way in smoke filled rooms. Even in scenes with extreme temperature dynamics that are typical for a firefighting environment. Examples are:-
Q. Are these cameras rugged and come with good backup warranty? We are maintaining highest standard of quality and our products confirm the same. Every K-Series camera is backed by a full 2-year warranty, but that’s only the start: the heart of the camera, the infrared detector, is covered by a full 10-year warranty. Only FLIR can cover the detector for 10 years because we design and manufacture the detectors ourselves so we have full control over the quality of these vital components.
Q. Other than Thermal Cameras, do you have any other type of equipmets ? Yes, we do have complete range of test and Measurement equipments including clamp meter, volt and Ammeters , vibration meters, sound meters, Lux meters etc.
Q. last question, Mr. Singh, whats your background ? I am a graduate Engineer with degree of B.E in Electronics and Communication. I did my management course from IIM, Calcutta and have more than 21 years of work experience. I am responsible for Sales of Instruments division of FLIR in India.

When we talk about the state of security, we can’t deny the fact of increase in day-to-day threats to life, material and property. In relation to the world of enterprises, we have to accept that security is a primary concern for not only SOHO but the segment of large enterprises and personal properties as well. This scenario creates the importance of security and the devices as well, to prevent the threats of life and property. This is the main reason behind increasing security needs within every segment. While talking about trends in security, it actually shows the type and segments of technologies being used in the security industry. People are more dependent on the technology based products, solutions and the services as well. In short, the need for security is expanding and mostly towards the technology based solutions.
Q. Which market are you targeting? India is a huge market for International business; similarly electronic security has a vast scope in the Indian market. We cater to customers in segments like IT, Health, Education, Manufacturing, Hotel, Finance and Retail.

Q. What are the challenges that you are currently facing in India? With similar product range available and tough competition in the market, opportunities are sure to come forth in abundance. It is more difficult to market a product when customers are not aware of the high end features which actually justify the value. A smart security system will minimize the error of margin, recording space, manual interruption for getting the required data and alert information of particular event scheduler, which will provide complete Video Analytics and smart Access Control system. In the current market, local players engage the customer by offering basic security system and so it becomes tough as we need to put in more efforts to educate the customer about the advance security system.
Q. What kind of plans and expectations do you have for this segment this year? The coming days are for Digital Communication as Analog Communication is now an out dated technology with limitations. Companies like Matrix have a wide range of products with Digital Technology. Awareness of technology will help our customers in selecting proper solution for their requirement. At DNR, we are always upgraded with the latest technical updates in the field of electronic security system that help us grab business opportunities. The Government of India is working on security surveillance and digital UID based attendance system, which might come up as a great business opportunity for us.

Vertical Market: Transport Security Q. What are the latest developments in transport security segment in India? Transport security has recently come to the limelight and has garnered government support to ensure citizen safety at all times. The delhi government has initiated the installment of cctv cameras in all DTC buses. Since the horrifying Nirbhaya incident, 200 buses have been equipped with surveillance systems and a 140 crores budget has been assigned to continue with the project. District administrations have made it mandatory to install cctv cameras in buses. Delhi metro is under cctv supervision and the Indian railways has also started installing cameras on an experimental basis, with 2 camers in each lobby and 4 cameras on the entrance doors for each compartment.
Q. What are the prevailing challenges for security solutions in securing transport sector? The most challenging part of transport security is that the current customer is not educated about the availability of solutions in the market. Most customers are not willing to invest in this arena of security and whatever progess has taken shape is only to satisfy government set regulations for transport security. Thus, it is yet to be seen if these installations fulfill the actual purpose of implementation of these projects. Also, most cctv cameras in public transportation is only for recording purposes. Data collected cannot be accessed remotely; so vandalism and threat to the hardware system defeats the basic purpose of the set up.
Q. What are the existing and emerging security threats in the transport sector? The transport sector is exposed to threats in the form of women security , child abuse, terrorism and vandalism, that not only pose a threat to the individual, but to the society on the whole. The Nirbhaya incident brought to light how public transport is prone to security breach and its critical nature & the necessity for transport security in today’s time.

Industry Report: Service & Maintenance Q. How is the post sales service and maintenance scenario in India?
vice of under-warranty products is 48 hours, which is achieved at a 98% success rate. In case of out-of-warranty products, the technology has evolved in the past 3 years by manifold. Nevertheless, 95% service is provided for products dating as old as 5 years.
More than 50% of the security market is unorganized because of which the post sales service maintenance scenario in India is very bad. Most installers are uneducated. So the installations are not proper, there are regular performance issues and overall there is no result at the user’s end. So the market growth is not as expected.
Q. How service and maintenance can lead to customer loyalty?
Q. What are the challenges and opportunities? Qualified and trained manpower for execution of post sales services is not available. Where it is, high-cost becomes a major issue, and the customer is not ready to pay extra for this. There is a huge opportunity in this segment if the above mentioned challenges can be overcome. If a company in the organized market segment can provide good service at reasonable cost and timely implementation, there is a huge prospect of growth in this sector.

Security is an electronic product. A lot of wiring is involved at each stage. So it is very common that the system may have certain problems. Thus if a customer gets proper maintenance at a reasonable budget, the customer loyalty increases.
Q. What is the way forward? As technology advances, the number of active cameras also increases and the role of analytics software also rises. To handle it, manpower is required. So under the national skills development program, job roles to maintain security systems has been defined. Thus more hands will be available for this segment in the coming days.

It’s important to remember to never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or welding clothing and insulate yourself from the work and ground.
• Follow the company’s internal safety practices • Awareness of the most common welding hazards and knowing how to avoid them ensures a safe, productive work environment for all.
Electric shock Electric shock is one of the most serious and immediate risks facing a welder. Electric shock can lead to severe injury or death, either from the shock itself or from a fall caused by the reaction to a shock. Electric shock occurs when welders touch two metal objects that have a voltage between them, thereby inserting themselves into the electrical circuit. For instance, if a worker holds a bare wire in one hand and a second bare wire with another, electric current will pass through that wire and through the welding operator, causing an electric shock. The higher the voltage, the higher the current and, thus the higher the risk for the electric shock to result in injury or death. The most common type of electric shock is secondary voltage shock from an arc welding circuit, which ranges from 20 to 100 volts. Bear in mind that even a shock of 50 volts or less can be enough to injure or kill an operator, depending on the conditions. Due to its constant change in
polarity, alternating current (AC) voltage is more likely to stop the heart than direct current (DC) welders. It is also more likely to make the person holding the wire unable to let go. To avoid secondary voltage shock, welding operators should wear dry gloves in good condition, never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or wet clothing and be sure to insulate themselves from the work and ground, keeping dry insulation between their body and the metal being welded or ground (such as a metal floor or wet surface). ADOR Welding Limited (AWL) offers a wide range of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), like Welding Gloves, Safety Shoes and other safety products to ensure the welders’ safety. In addition, AWL offers VRD (Voltage Reducing Device) as a built-in feature as an option, and also VRD Units which can be fitted externally to any AC or DC SMAW Welding machine, which keeps the secondary voltage down to a safe level of 18-20 V when no welding is being done (machine switched on, but in idle condition). Full welding power is automatically enabled whenever the welder strikes the welding arc. An even more serious shock, primary voltage shock, may occur when a welder touches electrically “hot” or “live” parts inside the welder case or the electric distribution system to which the welder is connected. This action can lead to a shock of 230 or 415 volts. AWL offers ELCB as an option in their welding machines to completely eliminate this hazard.
Fumes and gases Overexposure to welding fumes and gases can be hazardous to the health of the welder as well as any other person who is working in the vicinity of the welding area. Welding fume contains potentially harmful

complex metal oxide compounds from consumables, base metal and the basemetal coatings, so it is important to keep the head out of the fumes and use enough ventilation and/or exhaust to control the exposure to substances in the fume, depending on the type of rod and base metal being used. The specific potential health effects which relate to the welding consumable product being used can be found in the Health Hazard Data section of the Safety Data Sheet available from the consumable manufacturer. Welding areas require adequate ventilation and local exhaust to keep fumes and gases from the breathing zone and the general area. In most situations, a ventilation system- such as a fan, and an exhaust system or fixed or removable exhaust hoods- to remove fumes and gases from the work area are provided. AWL has introduced in their range different models of Welding Fume extraction systems, both stand-alone as well as centralized systems (KING EXTRACTORS), with advanced technology, special filters and with or without built-in compressors
Fire and explosions Welding arc creates extreme temperatures, and may pose a significant fire and
72
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | AUGUST 2017
explosions hazard if safe practices are not followed. While the welding arc may reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the real danger is not from the arc itself, but rather the intense near the arc and the heat, sparks and spatter created by the arc. This spatter can reach up to 35 feet away from the welding space. To prevent fires, before beginning to weld, inspect the work area for any flammable materials and remove them from the area. Flammable materials are comprised of three categories: liquid, such as gasoline, oil and paint; solid, such as wood, cardboard and paper; gas, including acetylene, propane and hydrogen.
Ergonomics When welding heavy material manually
Special attachments and extensions to interconnection cables reduce welder fatigue for welding at long distances from the Power Source
Rotators are used to rotate a job with circular or cylindrical profile to help the welder consistently without changing his position and welding torch angle continuously
and during assembly welding the loads are very static. Positioning welding also gives high loads. Ergonomic control of Welder’s position, arrangement of rotating tables (rotators and turn tables) is important to reduce welder fatigue and chances of poor weld quality.
Other safety considerations Welders should also be aware of other safety considerations within the work environment. For example, those working in a confined space or in an elevated area make need to take extra precautions. In any welding situation, welding operators should pay close attention safety information on the products being used and the material safety data sheets provided by the manufacturer and work with their employer and co-workers to follow appropriate safe practices for their workplace. Good common sense is also key. If opening cans of electrode, keep hands away from sharp edges. Remove clutter and debris from the welding area to prevent tripping or falling. And never use broken or damaged equipment or PPE. To keep up with the most recent safety practices, welding operators should utilize resources from the American Welding Society (AWS), OSHA and welding manufacturers. By following these safe practices and using common sense, operators can stay safe and keep production moving with no lost-time accidents. Safety & Health Fact Sheets are provided in the ANSI Z49.1 Standards.

contain information that other devices can read, but cannot read information themselves.
Advantages The RFID chip can be a useful tool, especially when it comes to emergency situations where instant access to the right medical information can mean the difference between life and death. No worries over lost or forgotten cards. An implanted RFID chip is impossible to lose or steal.
I
nstead of carrying access control cards, some Organizations are considering implanting, in the body of a human being, an identifying integrated circuit device or RFID transponder encased in silicate glass. This is typically referred to as a human microchip implant. This type of sub-dermal implant contains a unique ID number that can be linked to information contained in an external database, such as personal identification, law enforcement, medical history, medications, allergies, and contact information. Experimental work has been going on since the late 90’s. This received FDA approval in 2004. Some chip manufacturers have tried to market these implants as a way to restrict access to secure facilities. Microchip scanners would be installed at entrances so locks only work for persons whose chip numbers are entered into the system. Presently, such chips are used as virtual collar plates for pets, and companies use them to track deliveries. This technology has never been used to tag employees. We are now witnessing the beginning of human micro-chipping. This technology makes it possible, among other things, to instantly verify whether a

person is who he says he is. An RFID (shortrange radio frequency identification) implant can hold all the information that one usually carries in their wallets. It can transmit the identity information as the person walks through a security checkpoint, enabling the person to use public transport or any other secure premise. It would reduce long lines at the supermarket checkout. The future of micro-chip implants is exciting, with many interesting potential applications.
Micro-chip Implant This is simply a RFID chip - a tiny twoway radio, roughly the size of a grain of rice, capable of containing various types of information. It is inserted under the skin. when scanned, the chip can provide information such as a person’s ID number. This is linked to a database with more detailed information about the wearer. The small implants use near-field communication technology, or NFC, the same as in contactless cards. When activated by a reader a few inches away, a small amount of data flows between the two devices via electromagnetic waves. The implants themselves are “passive,” meaning they
Easier identification Passports, IDs and driver’s licenses already contain microchips and it would require minimal changes in infrastructures at passport control points to transition from scanning passports to scanning arms. One will be identified without having to do a thing – simply walk past a reader. Access to facilities This will eliminate long queues. In Clubs, Members use their chips to keep track of what they order and even to pay for their food and drinks. Waiters can scan the chips and a computer can automatically debit their bank accounts. Implanted RFID chips are also practical in the workplace, in hotels, at gyms and anywhere else where identification is needed for access to be granted. Medical history will always be easily accessible An implanted RFID chip can be used to quickly gain access to ones medical history. Information that is relevant in medical emergencies, especially when a patient is unconscious. unique code or number that can be used to access the information from a database. Tagging of patients, children and criminals It is not uncommon for babies to get mixed up at hospitals, for the elderly or hospital patients to wander out of care facilities or for criminals to escape from prison. It is also not uncommon for children to get lost in a crowd, run away from home or be kidnapped. In these instances, being able to track people means peace of mind for millions of caregivers, family members and parents. In the event of a kidnapping, the first 4 hours are the most critical. An RFID chip could significantly lower the risk of something terrible happening. A host of other user friendly features - the only limitation is ones imagination.
Futuristic Applications GPS enabled chip implant. This could make it possible for individuals to be physically located by latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, and direction of movement. However, if widely deployed at some future point, implantable GPS devices could conceivably allow authorities to locate missing persons and/or fugitives and those who fled from a crime scene. At present such implantable GPS devices are not

Health Hazard RFID devices implanted in rodents (as an incidental part of unrelated experiments) and dogs implanted with identification microchips sometimes developed cancerous tumors at the injection site. However, it must be mentioned here that the link between foreignbody tumorigenesis in lab animals and implantation in humans has been publicly refuted as erroneous and misleading. Other medical complications According to the FDA, implantation poses potential medical downsides. Electrical hazards, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) incompatibility, adverse tissue reaction, and migration of the implanted transponder are just a few of the potential risks. Security Since nearly all implantable microchips are unencrypted, they are extremely vulnerable to being read by third-party scanners. This could create security problems for building or computer access or potentially enable criminal misuse of the data. The chip could easily be removed from the person, or the appendage containing the device could be removed. RFID implanted chips may compromise privacy because there is no assurance that the information contained in the chip can be properly protected. Privacy Issues The data generated can show how often employees come to work or what they buy. Unlike access control cards or smart phones, which generate the same data, people cannot easily separate themselves from the chips.
Conclusion • Carrying a physical ID badge would no longer be required. • It would eliminate the potential for lost or stolen credentials. • It would substantially increase the convenience factor for users. • In emergencies, medical personnel will have easy access to the patients health data • Unlike access cards or smart phones, people cannot easily separate themselves from the chips. While some experts have their doubts about whether these chips are appropriate for use in humans, the fact that they could offer many advantages is indisputable.

The ELSA Inside Out: 35 Years of Escape Protection Tony Pickett, Associate Director of Product Management – Industrial & M&CD, Scott Safety, takes us through the history and inner workings of the ELSA Escape set.
B
reathing apparatus are pieces of equipment designed to supply a user with clean breathing air, from a compressed air source, which is independent from the atmosphere the wearer is working in. There are 3 different types of breathing apparatus; Self-contained breathing apparatus, Airline breathing apparatus and Escape breathing apparatus. In this article I will take you through Escape breathing apparatus, how it works & what it is used for. Compressed air escape sets were developed by Sabre (now Scott Safety) in the 1980’s who trademarked the name ELSA, meaning Emergency Life Saving Apparatus. Originally they were designed to solve the problem of escaping from fires on ships. In safety incidents involving ships it was determined that fatalities were often not caused by the fire itself but by the toxic products of combustion that filled the passage ways and stairwells on the ships and a lack of available oxygen. The industry therefore needed a product that could be easily stowed in various places around the ship, quickly donned by the ships personnel, and provide a short duration of air thus enable the wearer to get to the safety of the fresh air on the deck of the ship. To enable the escape set to be quickly and easily donned the product was designed with a hood that was effortless to pull over the head and would accommodate a wide variety of wearers, including those with beards and glasses. The hood was much simpler to don than a traditional facemask which would typically be used on a selfcontained BA set or airline set.
The anatomy of an escape set Typically a compressed air escape set will

consist of a small cylinder giving either a 10 or 15 minute duration. Cylinders are generally made of steel however there are some variants using carbon composite cylinders. The majority are charged typically to 200 bar but in some instances they may be 300 bar (200 bar is 200 times atmospheric pressure, to put that in perspective, the air in your car tyres is around 2.5 bar). However a wearer cannot breathe air at such a high pressure so fitted to the cylinder is a high pressure reducer. The reducer takes the high pressure air and reduces it down to around 7 bar. It is this 7 bar air that is then fed up into the hose to a hood where the air passes through a small hole called a restrictor which allows air to flow into the hood at around 40lpm. Air fills up the hood and the wearer breathes from this reservoir air. Obviously if you were just breathing from a hood full of air you would be breathing out carbon dioxide into this hood so to manage that the hood is fitted with an inner mask which channels the exhaled air out through an exhale valve so that fresh air is constantly circulated into the hood and the majority of the air you breath out is expelled. The cylinder, reducer and hood are all typically contained within a bag that the wearer can sling over their shoulder as they escape.
How is an ELSA used? As the name suggests Escape sets are only to be used for escape purposes, to leave a hazardous environment for a safe one. Under no circumstances are they to be used to enter a hazardous environment. If work is required in such an environment then a self-contained or positive pressure Airline set should be used. The Escape set will either be carried by
the user or will be mounted in a cabinet that the wearer can quickly obtain access to. Escape sets are often used in conjunction with other safety devices such as a gas detector, portable or fixed, which will alarm if the levels of a toxic gas increase or the level of oxygen decreases. Upon the user knowing that they need to escape they will open the bag and remove the hood. This automatically activates the flow of air, so the wearer does not have to concern themselves with turning on the set. The user can quickly pull the hood over their head and make their escape. When the wearer is in a safe area with known breathable air the hood can be removed. Typically the escape set would then be refilled with air, the hood put back in the bag and the unit returned to service.
The Evolution of the ELSA From its original design in the 1980’s Escape sets have progressed a lot, not least due to the implementation of European performance requirements which of course didn’t exist when the first product was created. From the original design to today’s model you will see improvements in flame resistance, CO2 build up levels, high visibility materials and automatic activation. The results of this is that you now have an exceptionally high performing product which gives you confidence you will be protected and able to escape should you need to.

related to Time-Attendance and Visitor Management.
Solution Offered: Matrix offered a Time-Attendance solution, which centrally handled multiple shifts of workers and employees. Numerous shifts were created to manage Time-Attendance of over 500+ workers. Moreover, we provided Employee Self Service, which helped the employees view day-to-day attendance, apply for leave/tour, etc. JK
Challenges: JK Tyres have its biggest manufacturing setup in Mysore. The premise consists of a manufacturing unit as well as the administrative department. Since the plant runs 24×7 and there are numerous shifts of workers, they found it difficult to manage multiple shifts manually. Managing visitors was also a problem for the company. So, they required a software that would help them keep a record of visitors on time-totime basis. Creating a visitor’s identity in the form of visitor pass and generating reports of visitors on a monthly basis was a tiresome process. JK Tyres was looking for a vendor who could offer them a complete solution

Apollo Discovery Marine devices protect prestigious new marine vessel in Singapore
T
he Derrick Lay Vessel 2000 (DLV 2000) in Singapore is the latest marine accolade for leading fire detection manufacturer, Apollo Fire Detectors who has recently supplied the marine fire detection system for the new vessel. The DLV 2000, built by shipyard Keppel Singmarine Pte Ltd, combines S-lay, heavy lift, large deck space and accommodation, with efficient transit speed to effectively execute projects in all major oil and gas basins around the globe. Key features of the vessel include its 2,200-ton crane, several additional cranes for construction, pipeline and deepwater installation and an S-lay capability from 4.5 to 60 inches with a high strain, deep water stinger. The vessel is also capable of accommodating up to 400 passengers and personnel. Maretek Ltd is an engineering company specialising in fire and safety systems for the industrial and marine sector. The company was chosen by the yard’s and vessel’s owners, McDermott Inc, to design, specify and install a fire detection system which would be fit for purpose. This included the need for the system to comply with the stringent rules in place for marine vessels, including Safe Return to Port (SRtP) and Code of Safety for Special Purpose Ships (IMO IA820E SPS2008) regulations. SRtP and SPS2008 regulations define the thresholds of how the system can remain operable and safe in the case of single incident or failure, to allow the vessel to safely return to the nearest port. There, the ship should be able to sail with no interruption to vessel safety parameters to a designated port, without requiring

passengers to evacuate. To meet this complex set of requirements, Maretek specified over 800 Apollo Discovery Marine analogue addressable fire detectors and devices. The range gives complete reassurance in nautical installations where it is necessary to adapt detection to different operating environments, and where protection against false alarms is paramount. The system incorporates 27 loops, and is powered by 14 networked panels from Kentec. Commenting on the project, Simon Flavell, New Business Development Manager (Marine and Offshore) at Apollo Fire Detectors, said: “We were delighted to be involved in such a prestigious project – this new vessel really is a state-of-the-art example which meets the highly stringent rules and regulations. By working closely with engineers at Maretek, we have been able to ensure that life and property on this substantial vessel are protected, no matter where in the world it may be operating.”
time, the company has broadened its capability from a straightforward focus on conventional fire detectors to include the manufacture of sophisticated analogue addressable detectors and interfaces for monitoring and controlling equipment in fire protection systems. Apollo applies the most modern production techniques and has invested in sophisticated manufacturing equipment to ensure consistently high quality products and fast response to customer requirements. Through planned expansion, Apollo has reached a leading global position in the market for professional fire detection. With over 3000 international approvals, regional offices in the UK, America, China, India and Germany along with direct trade into more than 100 countries, Apollo has cemented its position as a world-class fire solutions provider. Apollo is part of the HALMA group of companies. HALMA is a FTSE top 250 listed PLC with over 40 subsidiaries worldwide, all engaged in specialist engineering activities. Apollo is also a holder of the Royal Warrant, by appointment to Her Majesty, The Queen, for the manufacturer of Fire Detection & Alarm products.

Groton Utilities Achieves Comprehensive 3-2-1 Data Protection With Quantum & Veeam Combination of DXi Deduplication, Scalar Tape and Veeam Software Protect Against Data Loss and Malware While Cutting Costs
Q
uantum Corp. (NYSE: QTM recently announced that Connecticut-based Groton Utilities is using DXi® disk-based deduplication and Scalar® tape in combination with Veeam backup and replication software to consolidate multisite backup and disaster recovery (DR), protecting its critical data against malware and loss and reducing overall costs. Groton’s implementation demonstrates a commitment to 3-2-1 data protection best practices: three copies of data, using two different media types, with one copy offline and off-site.
growth, in part because the company had such a positive experience with Quantum’s tape library and service support team. The DXi appliance not only provides fast backup and restore to keep data readily available but also delivers high deduplication rates that enable Groton to retain backup data for a full 30 days. “We saw the value of a 3-2-1 approach to data protection,” said Tom O’Farrell, Groton Utilities system administrator, “but we hadn’t found an effective and cost-efficient way to implement it until we deployed the Quantum-Veeam solution.”
Effective Protection for VMs Groton Utilities provides water, power and other services for a wide area of southeastern Connecticut, including the City of Groton. Over the years, the IT team’s approach to backup and DR protection has evolved — for example, when the servers were all physical, backups were written to a tape library. As servers became 95 percent virtualized, disk then became part of the strategy. To protect virtual machines (VMs) more effectively, the team chose software from Veeam, and it added Quantum DXi deduplication appliances to handle data

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | AUGUST 2017
Tape Protects Against Ransomware Writing data to tape provides “air gap” protection against data loss and malware, including ransomware. The IT team created a configuration using the two different data centers and disk-to-disk replication. Veeam backs up the VMs to the DXi appliance, and the team’s legacy backup application creates tapes. “We have seen the damage and costs that recent ransomware attacks have created, and we know the best protection is having a kind of ‘air gap’ — keeping a copy of
critical data on tape that is isolated from the vulnerable spinning disk,” said O’Farrell.
Reducing Backup Complexity The Groton Utilities team plans to simplify the backup system further by adding another DXi at its second data center to back up both VMs and CIFS shares to the DXi appliances using Veeam, and then replicating backup data between data centers using the DXi appliances. The new system will leverage integration of the DXi systems with the Veeam Data Mover to increase performance and support features such as synthetic full backup and Instant VM Recovery directly on a DXi appliance. Veeam will also back up the physical servers and create tapes. “The power of the Quantum and Veeam technology is enabling us to simplify,” said O’Farrell. The DXi appliances are getting excellent dedupe rates and providing highly effective replication,” said O’Farrell. “Veeam can now do backups for both VMs and physical servers, and it can write data both to CIFS shares and to tape libraries. Our experience over the last year is that the Quantum and Veeam elements of the combined solution work very well together.”
