CEO CORNER SAFETY & SECURITY in Retail Sector In retail, protecting stock against theft and damage has become crucial. The growth of various retailing formats, stocking a range of categories across smaller sized-high value items has meant that security has become a major imperative for retailers. A security system, excellent customer service, and trained personnel in the store can help to combat shoplifting if implemented together to offer a solution to the shoplifting in your store. Having excellent customer service first and foremost has been found to help deter shoplifting in retail stores as well as any other security measure. Trained personnel at checkouts can stop customers from lingering too long and walking out with merchandise they have not paid because the lines were too long and didn’t want to wait any longer. Implementing security measures to follow in case of a shoplifting incident can save lives. Is the security personnel team in your store trained and know what to do when approaching a shoplifter? Reviewing security measures with all your employees is paramount, but security personnel need to know what to do and when to do the approaching and apprehension of a shoplifter. Since customers and employees are a retailer’s biggest asset, maintaining a safe and secure environment for people to work and shop is priority number one. In a matter of seconds, a threatening situation can occur and a retailer must respond swiftly and effectively to provide maximum protection to employees and customers. Failing to protect people and assets may have severe implications to a retail organisation. Incidents happen daily and vary ranging from parking lot assaults to customers slipping/falling. In some cases, those incidents can be major, resulting in serious injuries or possible deaths. Retailers have a responsibility not only to protect workers and shoppers but also to minimise the risks for the organisation. Equipping retail stores with proven security and safety solutions is the only way to safeguard against all types of scenarios to help protect customers, employees and assets.

Dahua Facial Recognition Solution Enhances Safety & Business Intelligence Dahua Technology Co., Ltd., a leading solution provider in the global video surveillance industry, has announced that its state- of -the- art Facial Recognition Solution enhances safety and business intelligence for its users. In real life you usually don’t want to get into the drama of being seen as someone other than yourself. The misrecognition problem is not only time consuming, dignity compromising but also, in lots of cases, life threatening, if certain dangerous people are not correctly identified in time. This is a mistake no longer affordable to make in today’s context, whether for an individual, a group or the society as a whole. Fortunately the facial recognition technology has matured and the security solution based on the said technology is being widely used across the world. Dahua Technology, a leading solution provider in the global surveillance industry, is especially good in the realm as has been proved by multiple championship and new records in major international challenges, including Multiple Object Tracking Challenge, the KITTI 2D Object Detection Evaluation 2012,KITTI Flow Benchmark, Task [Word Recognition] of Incidental Scene Text Challenge and Born-Digital Image Challenge. It is necessary to explain some basic rules concerning how facial recognition works before the tour to see how Dahua Technology’s products

18

& solutions are applied in various daily scenes. Simply put, big data is useless if the accuracy and efficiency of facial recognition has not been improved to certain level. The face detection, whether from a snapshot or from a stream of video, requires not only a high-quality camera but more importantly, a smart AI algorithm that optimizes the image captured in multiple angles or blurred in motion and translates the face feature into digital model which can be crosschecked in the database. The whole process, from taking the picture to comparison, takes as short as 300ms. Suppose there is a Tom, a middle level manager in his mid-30s. Let’s follow Tom for a day and see how Dahua Technology’s facial recognition solution plays its role in his perfectly ordinary life.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

Tom vs. Access Control Tom hurried to his company on the 30th floor of a class A office building, the kind with additional barriers in the lobby between the front gate and elevators. There were long lines in front of the access control machines. Tom reached into his pocket and found unfortunately his access card wasn’t there. But Tom should worry no more because the building had just updated the security system with Dahua facial recognition solution, which overcame various shortcomings of traditional ways of card or fingerprint scanning, including low efficiency and inadequate security. Comparing to a card, apparently it is much less likely for one to lose/replicate/borrow a face. And the access control was no longer a gamble if one’s fingerprint works. Here is how exactly Dahua

facial recognition solution works in this scene. The powerful cameras blessed with deep learning AI detect the faces and digitalize the features and compare them purely through numbers with the ones in database which takes less than 1 second. The beauty of the solution goes both ways since the company no longer needs to make a card or import finger prints for the newly employed but simply upload their photos into the database that contains up to 10,000 faces. Besides offices, this solution can also be applied to any place that has a high standard for access control, like customs, schools, residential communities, etc.

Tom on the White List Tom stepped into a bank. On behalf of his company, Tom had some serious business to discuss with the bank, which, at this hour, was full of people. And before Tom started to worry about the time to be spent waiting and if he could make it to the next meeting on time, he heard his last name called and was led into the VIP room. Now how did the bank manage to do that? Not by human efforts for sure. No clerk could remember each and every face and match it with a particular name and particular business without making any mistake. That’s why facial recognition solution is essential to the business. The immediate detection of a VIP face could be easily matched with the white list in database. No delay or

BUSINESS NEWS

misidentification and all VIP treatment. This goes not only for banks. Hotels, hospitals and casinos alike will also benefit from this solution that secures the proper respect those exceptional customers deserve.

Tom Unauthorized Tom went to the vault of the bank for the first time in his life. He was happy that now he was trusted by the company with such important mission. He walked fast and went in front of the escort. But before he could raise his hand to touch the door of vault, a warning siren was triggered. The escort, with a reassuring smile, caught up and patted on Tom’s shoulder and explained the whole situation to him.

No unauthorized personnel, be it Tom or Jerry, could intrude the sensitive areas blessed with Dahua facial recognition solution. The face captured and automatically optimized by the camera would be put into real time comparison with the authorized faces in data base and the low percentage of similarity, from a pure mathematical point of view, would immediately trigger the alarm. Other limited access areas like labs and archives will also enjoy better protection with facial recognition solution.

Tom and the Black List After a long day’s work, Tom went to see a football game with a friend. The show began even before they entered the stadium

because they saw an infamous football hooligan got rejected and taken away outside the entrance gate. Tom, who had been through plenty of adventures during the day, kind of figured out what happened. And Tom’s friend, who happened to be an employee of Dahua Technology, took the chance to explain how Dahua facial recognition solution informed the security force to deal with any persona non grata on the black list as soon as they showed their faces. Of course, this solution could be widely applied to other areas like airports, train stations, or in other words, city management. So, this was a day in Tom’s life, which was endowed with

some dramatic coincidence but totally realistic in every scene. These examples were far from exhaustion of all the possible applications of Dahua facial recognition solution that fully activates big data gathered and thus spawns a great many creative applications in terms of security and business, resulting indeed into a Safer Society and Smarter Living, as has always been envisioned by Dahua Technology

Shift to Smart Factories In an industrial setting pumps never work in isolation and are always a part of a larger system. Grundfos has invested heavily in the R&D of its products. It was 7 decades ago when they came up with their first pump, solely built for the purpose of moving liquid from point A to point B. Further developing on the technology, they introduced the E-Solution pumps, whose integrated controls enabled the pumps to adapt to changing

20

demands. This helped further smoothen the pumps and make them more energy efficient. Fast forward to 2007, Grundfos pumps were the first company to couple IOT technology with their pumps, leading to what is now called - Grundfos iSolutions. Years of R&D and expertise in the pump industry, the iSolution greatly improved on several aspects. Focusing on intelligent communication between components like the drives, measurement & control systems, the Grundfos iSolution pumps have enabled the endusers to enjoy benefits like user-friendliness, great savings, and extended customization. It is the constant innovation by companies such as these that

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

drive the move towards smarter factories. Another aspect of smart factories is about how clean they are in terms of energy efficiency and anti-pollution measures. At this point in time, the capability of an industry to balance its environmental and business interests is crucial. A green factory not only entails a sustainable way of production, but it starts at how the facility is built (i.e.) the materials used. Also, it must take into account the energy consumed by the secondary

processes of the factory. For example, temperature control is an important system in a factory, but that does require the temperature control system to function round the clock, as the load varies at different times. Using an intelligent solution like the Grundfos iSolution Temperature Control system ensures full control of temperatures with fewer components and a complete overview of the system’s performance.

Quantum introduces converged tape appliance for Veeam Environments, delivering offline data and ransomware protection Quantum Corp. (NYSE: QTM) today announced the availability of a new converged tape appliance designed to make it fast and easy to procure, install, configure and create tape backups in a Veeam environment for offline protection against ransomware. The solution is available as a single SKU, making it easier to purchase and implement a tape library platform optimized for Veeam backups.

Tape’s New Role: Offline Ransomware Protection The new converged tape appliance is particularly well-suited for customers seeking protection against ransomware, which has grown to become a $1 billion business with attacks increasing exponentially over the last three years. As an ‘offline’ storage medium, data stored on tape is not physically connected to the

24

network, making it an effective barrier against ransomware and malware. Employing tape as part of a best practice data protection strategy helps enable customers to recover uncorrupted data and minimize disruption to operations.

Users gain the benefits of tape for protecting against ransomware without complication. The converged appliance is offered as a single line item SKU, making it easier for VARs and distributors to provide a simple, one-stop solution for their customers.

Easy Integration of Tape into Veeam Environments

Continuing Quantum’s History of Integration with Veeam

Historically, creating tape backups with Veeam Backup and Replication required a dedicated external physical server to host the Veeam tape server. Quantum addressed this challenge by building a blade server directly into its Scalar i3 tape library platform. This approach eliminates the need to size, configure, procure and set up a dedicated external server, making it easier for end users to create tape backups in a Veeam environment.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

Quantum’s converged tape appliance continues a history of integration with Veeam. Quantum solutions uniquely combine disk and tape to provide hyper-availability storage solutions for Veeam environments. Quantum’s DXi deduplication appliances introduced integration with Veeam, embedding Veeam Data Mover to help customers restore any file, application, and virtual

server from DXi appliances. Quantum’s multi-tiered storage portfolio of hybrid storage, deduplication appliances, object storage and tape complement the capabilities Veeam has introduced with the latest Veeam Availability Suite, and this combination is designed to offer customized data protection solutions to address the cost and performance needs of a wide range of customer implementations.

Pricing and Availability Converged tape appliances for Veeam environments are available today, beginning at $17,000 MSRP.

Axis Solutions Day 2018 showcases innovative and intelligent products and technologies for a smarter, safer tomorrow

Sudhindra Holla, Sales Director, India & SAARc, Axis Communications addresing at the Axis Solutions Day 2018 in Delhi

Axis Communications, the market leader in network video, at Axis Solutions Day 2018, shared implementation details of their large-scale community CCTV Nenu Saitham project in Hyderabad City. The annual event showcased their integrated smart solutions in IP Audio, Retail Suite and Thermal cameras. Centered on the theme, The Future in Integrated Security Solutions, the event brought to fore Axis’ recent India success stories and their key takeaways from prestigious surveillance implementations across the country, including the Mysore City Palace project. The Government of Telangana has been proactive in adopting a one-of-its kind smart surveillance implementation. With this community CCTV programme, the Hyderabad City Police is encouraging enterprises, public sectors, residential associations and individuals to invest in CCTV’s procured from government empaneled firms. They will then setup a monitoring centre in their own

30

colonies which in turn can be integrated with the nearest police stations and the Central Command Center. This will track, monitor and analyse the video feed for detecting criminal activities, traffic violations and road conditions real time. According to the project, an entity or individual can buy a CCTV system that will cover the premise entry, exit and parking areas to the extent of 50 yards on the road, along with storage and video screen for self-monitoring within the colony. The Government of Telangana will provide the backend connectivity to the Police Stations, Command Control Centre along with real-time Video Analytics. M. Mahender Reddy, the Director General of Hyderabad Police asserted, “The impact of CCTV installations in Hyderabad City police jurisdiction has been astounding, leading to a huge reduction in overall crime rate by 32 % in the last three years (2014-17) and reduction of 90.6% in chain-snatchings incidents

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

during this period. Additionally, the Govt of Telangana is planning to install 15 lakh cameras across the State in the next three years.” Highlighting the efforts that led to the success of the Hyderabad implementation, Sudhindra Holla, Sales Director - India and SAARC, Axis Communications said, “We are proud to be a partner of choice for The Hyderabad community CCTV project. This is an example of community participation towards building a safer and secured smart city. We have 1,500 camera installations across the city to track, monitor and analyze the video feed for detecting criminal activities, traffic violations, and road conditions. With our strong portfolio of product line-up, we aim to support the authorities to deliver high surveillance and build a model Smart City and eagerly look forward to the phase two implementation.” “Axis carries a rich lineage of over 35 years in India and during the time, we understand the pulse of the India market. With an estimated budget of ì 2.09 lakh crores for smart city

programmes by the Government, we are upbeat that high end surveillance solutions are the need of the hour,” he added. Speaking on the Mysore Palace implementation, Sudhindra emphasized, “The project was challenging as the site continued to operate even during the installation. Mysore Palace, being one of the most visited heritage sites of India, we had to ensure that the work was seamless with minimum disruption. We also had to create a multi-point wireless network to ensure the infrastructure had the ability to support the new cameras as well as the management software across the area for crowd and queue management.” Security and surveillance are an integral part of all societies. With the government’s smart city projects gaining momentum, there is a dire need of new age IP Video integrated end to end solutions to deliver high business value. Axis ‘Smart’ security implementation not only provides a better quality of life with clean and sustainable environment, but also promises a safer city. Some of the major

BUSINESS NEWS

smart city implementations include Aurangabad, Bhavnagar, Kolhapur and Junagadh. In the retail and hospitality segments Axis smart implementation includes Café Coffee Day and Novotel Goa Shrem Hotels, respectively. One of the prominent installations in the education segment is Dayalbagh Educational Institute. Axis also boasts of the prestigious Mysore Palace (heritage site), surveillance implementation, among many others. Video surveillance has seen a paradigm shift in India with security becoming a priority for both the Government and enterprises. With an increase in the number of cyber-attacks which exposes vulnerabilities, dealing with well-resourced

cybercriminals becomes a challenge. If left unaddressed, these could lead to networks being breached, ransomware to be planted or, be responsible for costly downtime. The answer is to be proactive and systematic for ensuring that patches are implemented as soon as they are available. Recording high-resolution videos with in-built compression is what today’s IP video surveillance capable of. There are multiple benefits of using IP-based surveillance to provide efficient security in the smart cities arena, like video analytics, environmental sensors and support in law enforcement for departments to gather evidence during investigations. Further integrated, with IP Audio, it

can be used to make scheduled or live announcements, and to track security violation in manufacturing/industrial sites. On the other hand, thermal cameras using thermal imaging and enhanced low-light capabilities have taken the smart surveillance a step ahead. With built-in analytics, such as Video Motion Detection helps detect motion from moving objects within a predefined area, these

intelligent solutions are useful for environments where privacy is of utmost importance like – schools and care homes.

COVER STORY

ROSS Controls : The SAFETY driven technology expertise Q. Can you briefly introduce ROSS Controls and its global presence? ROSS Controls, with its headquarters in the United states, is a global manufacturer of Pneumatic and Hydraulic Safety valves & System solutions having its manufacturing facilities & sales offices in US, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, France, China, Brazil and India. ROSS commenced its operations in India during Y2001 at Chennai with its field sales team spread around all the regions in the country.

Q. How ROSS is differentiated in Fluid Power segment as compared to your competition? While we do have the back-pocket products to earn the position of “first look” for all fluid power components in targeted markets, we follow the focused differentiation strategy to emerge as the preferred and / or single source provider of unique system solutions through our front-pocket products for machinery and industrial safety which ultimately help the customers to increase the plant productivity.

Q. Why Industrial Safety is not accorded a priority in India? Safety is a term related with culture - be it personal, social or industrial. It is a watchword and way of life in most parts of the world except Asian and African countries. People in the western world are so concerned about their personal safety that, it’s quite easy for them to incorporate safety measures into their work places. However, majority of the communities and the population in the rest of the world including India are ready to risk their lives and often not bothered about their personal safety. Perhaps the basic limiting factor may be the cost associated with it and they don’t find a value

36

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

Mr. Pradeep Roy, Managing Director, ROSS Controls India Pvt Ltd for it while that’s not the reality! How can you expect adoption of safety measures into the industries in such a scenario from these people who run the businesses?

Q. What is your assessment on the adoption and implementation of safety measures in industries across India? Perception about safety with most of the industrialists in India is that it’s an unnecessary wastage of money, time and efforts. A limited industrial community

restricts safety incorporation in their plants by employing only personal protective equipment (PPE) and some even goes to the extent of displaying certain safety slogans as envisaged in relevant plant safety standards like OSHAS. They appear to be enthusiastic to declare in various platforms that their plants are safety certified and safety is their top-notch priority. While their efforts are highly appreciated since it’s half way done, they should also realize that they need to adopt further few steps to justify their efforts

COVER STORY

in transforming their plants and machines to achieve the desired safety level.

Q. Are there any industries/ organizations in India who have implemented safety at optimum level? Of course; but mostly by certain American, European and Japanese MNCs. A limited population of other MNCs and Indian companies have also gone far ahead but limited to the extent of implementing electrical safety mostly due to their misperception that safety ends with wire! As long as your machines runs only on electrical input and does not use any other form of energy, it’s okay and acceptable. But what about the equipment or machines which use either pneumatic or hydraulic energy to derive the power? Unless you incorporate pneumatic or hydraulic safety devices, your equipment / machine as a system cannot be considered as safe and the partial efforts put in do not help in serving the purpose!

Q. What is the methodology organizations need to follow to determine the desired or optimum level of safety for their machines/ equipment? The basic methodology is to perform the assessment of the risks of your equipment /system through competent people as per relevant International & National standards by which you will be able to identify the hazards. This will help you to design the appropriate safety measures (using validated components and principles) either to reduce or eliminate the associated risks. It is utmost essential to conduct the test and analysis of the performance of the new safety system both before and after the implementation.

Q. Do you think that such initiatives will happen from the industrial community in India? It needs deliberate efforts to cultivate the culture of safety in human minds. There are two ways through which you can make significant turnaround. First one is creating awareness on safety with all stake holders

with which actions would still be voluntary but the second one viz., legislation to be enacted by Government of India in near future will make it mandatory to drive the process.

Q: Do you think that creating awareness on safety is a challenging task? It’s our endeavor to educate customers and users not only on achieving the desired safety level for their machines and employees based on risk assessment but also on the cost savings due to uptime (avoiding downtime) when they incorporate safety into the system. We can easily remove their false perception on initial or capital cost if we get an opportunity to convince them on the life cycle cost and the cost savings due to the productivity improvement. Unfortunately, some customers are still showing reluctance even to discuss on this topic which is the major challenge we are confronted with at this point of time.

Q. Whether Government of India is planning enforcement of machinery safety through any legislation? As long as psychological barriers prevail as explained earlier, the only option to ensure work place or machinery safety is through a law or an act. US, European Union and Brazil have already implemented safety legislation and relevant directives way back and they follow either International or National standards like ISO, IEC, ANSI, CEN etc. Of late, Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) realized the necessity of releasing relevant standards and formed the Manufacturing Machinery and their Safety Sectional Committee-MED 40 during Y2017. Ross India was nominated as the only vendor representative in this committee based on our expertise in the pneumatic safety area. We are hopeful of getting these standards released by early next year. However, release of standards by BIS alone does not guarantee its implementation unless supported by a legislation. Since the laws prevailing in India are not that much effective, Government of India is coming up with a

legislation amendment where in adoption of relevant BIS standards is expected to be referenced.

Q. How innovative is ROSS in product offering to cop up with market trends and technological advancements? ROSS mostly manufactures technology driven products and many of them are patented. We lead the fluid power safety segment on a global basis and have been consistently upgrading our products over the past few years for value creation. All of us are now in the era of Industry 4.0, Smart manufacturing and IoT – the technologies that are going to drive and revolutionize the Industrial segment. ROSS will be launching more compatible products in immediate future leveraging the expertise spread across our Global Engineering Centers located in India, Germany and USA managed by Mr. Jay Dalal, Sr. VP (Engg & Product Management) based out of our US Head Quarters.

Q. How do you see the business potential and growth of ROSS Controls in India? Ross India is well poised to double its sales by end of Y2019 owing to the strategic change brought in by the new, young and dynamic CEO of Ross Controls – Mr. Jeffery J Hand during Y2015-2016.Strategic direction set by him after taking over as the CEO continues to produce excellent results not only in India but also across all other ROSS business units globally. ROSS India has successfully completed its strategic market positioning with its technical sales team who are Certified Machinery Safety Experts -CMSE® (TÜV Nord). While market dynamics historically played an important role in our growth, we are now effectively making use of our core competencies to maintain a sustainable growth. While we are focused with our conventional business model in Steel, Aluminum, Glass Container and Metal forming industrial segments, we have been exploring the slowly growing but highly promising fluid power (Pneumatic & Hydraulic) safety segment which is detrimental for us in achieving our targeted growth goals in India. above technologies and solutions depending on the perceived threat.

• Study the environment around the site – the landscape, flora, fauna and the topography. Quite often the topography can provide natural protection and sometimes a potential source of vulnerability. • Study the climatic conditions and its effect on the different types of systems available. • Understand the local regulations and the social acceptance of some of the protection systems e.g. Electrified fences may not find acceptance in some cases • Check for the presence of high voltage power lines in the vicinity and the possibility of electromagnetic interference that may affect specific technologies. • Some sites e.g. oil rigs or process plants may require the technology to be intrinsically safe. • Some threats may require a covert (hidden or buried) system in addition to a ‘in your face’ deterrent. • Where the threat perception is high and/ or the asset critical, it may be necessary to take a layered approach and deploy multiple technologies. • Use video analytics as it acts like a force multiplier and considerably enhances the effectiveness of the security staff. • For the perimeter protection system to be effective it must integrate seamlessly with the overall security strategy. This is a very important factor in selecting the system and the technology.

Selection criteria

Conclusion

The following steps must be followed in order to select an effective perimeter protection system: • Conduct a ‘threats, risk and vulnerability’ assessment of the site. • Recognize the threat level and the potential for future escalation or otherwise. Some sites may need a mere fence that will deter potential intruders while other situations may require a fence with mounted cameras.

• The integration and layering of different perimeter intrusion detection technologies offer customers the most dramatic improvements to site security. • An integrated solution acts as an efficient and effective force multiplier. • Combining cost-effective technologies reduces nuisance alarms. • The latest technology and / or the costliest solution may not necessarily be the most effective solution.

Satinder Kumar Thakral is an accomplished Security professional with 38 years of Govt. Service in the Ministry of Home Affairs and 7 years in the private security Sector. For the last one year he is working with Law Abiding Technology, New Delhi. The Law Abiding Technology is a pioneer in providing best covert surveillance solutions to various security agencies.

new product introduced recently in India is changing the way the video streaming was done till now. Earlier we would see a sea of vehicles with dish antenna mounted on them with small sized generators and two to six technicians at hand to prepare a platform to record an incident at a particular spot be it a house of politician or scene of happening. Such scenes were also common in pictures like “Peepli Live” wherein dish mounted vehicles with crew would reach a spot of hot activity in a small distant village. This all is going to change now. AVIWEST has come out with technology wherein portable easy to handle and compact gadgets loaded with features beyond comprehensions. AVIWEST has come out with three different models for different type of professional usages, be it commercial broadcasting channels, security forces, amateurs or photographers.

World class live video solutions Leveraging expertise in video and wireless networks, AVIWEST developed the world’s most advanced DMNG (Digital Mobile News Gathering) System. The DMNG system is currently being used by leading broadcasters in more than 80 countries to cover breaking news and live events in real time. the PRO180-RA has eight MCX antenna connectors on its front panel. These can be used to support two AVIWEST QUAD wideband external cellular antenna arrays to strengthen signal transmission in critical environments such as live from vehicles on the move. Compact, lightweight, and portable design is perfect for in the field use: Weighing about 1 kg, the portable PRO180-RA can be easily connected to any professional camera (e.g., SD/HD SDI, analog [BNC] and HDMI) and mounted via V-Mount, Gold Mount, or PAG plates. By providing broadcasters with a video uplink system that is easy to transport, the PRO speeds up news gatherings operations.) Simple use and control enables rapid newsgathering: The PRO is designed to automatically detect real-time network capabilities. Through a user -friendly and intuitive touch-screen interface, the PRO allows any on-the-go media professional to easily configure and operate this system

as well as communicate with the studio through the IFBreturn channel. The units can also be controlled by the receiver (Stream hub), the management System (Manager), the Remote smart phone application or any device connected to the unit though the network.

A new product for security forces has come to India Earlier only the TV channels were privy to live breaking news or other live streaming of programs but now the security forces of Central Government and State Governments can use this technology and improve their capability of handling law & order situations in their respective area of coverage/states. The dependability of intelligence and security services on media/TV channels shall diminish once they have their own live video streaming arrangements. As composed to the existing system of live Video Streaming by TV channels the cost of

new system by this company are merely a fraction of existing systems. Another feature of this AVIWEST system is that it can send videos or record & send videos directly to consumer without involving any third party as compared to the previous/existing systems which worked through a server of the third party deployed in a third/other Country. Through this the video recorded by TV Channel go to the server located in a third country and then sent to the TV channels. Therefore all the streamed data can be used/mis-used in the third country and the chances of its leakage could be pretty high whereas in this system the videos are sent directly to the server owned by the company or say the security force where it is 100% secure from their point of view. It therefore is a very safe system for them. Adopting new technologies can definitely save time and money but also increase their depenedability.

Safety in Welding By S.K. Palit, Head-CCC & Strategic Support - Equipment, SGP & WAPS, Ador Welding Ltd.

S

afety is a critical consideration for any welding project. Arc welding is a safe occupation when proper precautions are taken. But, if safety measures are ignored, welders face an array of hazards which can be potentially dangerous, including electric shock, fumes and gases, fire and explosions and more. Welders are members of an occupational group which is exposed to a number of different environmental problems: • Electricity • Electromagnetic fields • UV, IR and visible light radiation • Air pollution • Fire and Spatter • Noise • Ergonomics To help keep welders safe, organizations such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offer safety guidelines to help control, minimize or to help employers and workers avoid welding hazards. Employers should ensure all workers have an opportunity to comply with the following important guidelines in the workplace: • Read and understand manufacturer instructions for equipment • Carefully review material safety data sheets

52

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

It’s important to remember to never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or welding clothing and insulate yourself from the work and ground.

• Follow the company’s internal safety practices • Awareness of the most common welding hazards and knowing how to avoid them ensures a safe, productive work environment for all.

Electric shock Electric shock is one of the most serious and immediate risks facing a welder. Electric shock can lead to severe injury or death, either from the shock itself or from a fall caused by the reaction to a shock. Electric shock occurs when welders touch two metal objects that have a voltage between them, thereby inserting themselves into the electrical circuit. For instance, if a worker holds a bare wire in one hand and a second bare wire with another, electric current will pass through that wire and through the welding operator, causing an electric shock. The higher the voltage, the higher the current and, thus the higher the risk for the electric shock to result in injury or death. The most common type of electric shock is secondary voltage shock from an arc welding circuit, which ranges from 20 to 100 volts. Bear in mind that even a shock of 50 volts or less can be enough to injure or kill an operator, depending on the conditions. Due to its constant change in

polarity, alternating current (AC) voltage is more likely to stop the heart than direct current (DC) welders. It is also more likely to make the person holding the wire unable to let go. To avoid secondary voltage shock, welding operators should wear dry gloves in good condition, never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or wet clothing and be sure to insulate themselves from the work and ground, keeping dry insulation between their body and the metal being welded or ground (such as a metal floor or wet surface). ADOR Welding Limited (AWL) offers a wide range of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), like Welding Gloves, Safety Shoes and other safety products to ensure the welders’ safety. In addition, AWL offers VRD (Voltage Reducing Device) as a built-in feature as an option, and also VRD Units which can be fitted externally to any AC or DC SMAW Welding machine, which keeps the secondary voltage down to a safe level of 18-20 V when no welding is being done (machine switched on, but in idle condition). Full welding power is automatically enabled whenever the welder strikes the welding arc. An even more serious shock, primary voltage shock, may occur when a welder touches electrically “hot” or “live” parts inside the welder case or the electric distribution system to which the welder is connected. This action can lead to a shock of 230 or 415 volts. AWL offers ELCB as an option in their welding machines to completely eliminate this hazard.

Fumes and gases Overexposure to welding fumes and gases can be hazardous to the health of the welder as well as any other person who is working in the vicinity of the welding area. Welding fume contains potentially harmful

TECH UPDATE

Welding areas require adequate ventilation and local exhaust to keep fumes and gases from the breathing zone and the general area.

complex metal oxide compounds from consumables, base metal and the basemetal coatings, so it is important to keep the head out of the fumes and use enough ventilation and/or exhaust to control the exposure to substances in the fume, depending on the type of rod and base metal being used. The specific potential health effects which relate to the welding consumable product being used can be found in the Health Hazard Data section of the Safety Data Sheet available from the consumable manufacturer. Welding areas require adequate ventilation and local exhaust to keep fumes and gases from the breathing zone and the general area. In most situations, a ventilation system- such as a fan, and an exhaust system or fixed or removable exhaust hoods- to remove fumes and gases from the work area are provided. AWL has introduced in their range different models of Welding Fume extraction systems, both stand-alone as well as centralized systems (KING EXTRACTORS), with advanced technology, special filters and with or without built-in compressors

Fire and explosions Welding arc creates extreme temperatures, and may pose a significant fire and

54

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

explosions hazard if safe practices are not followed. While the welding arc may reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the real danger is not from the arc itself, but rather the intense near the arc and the heat, sparks and spatter created by the arc. This spatter can reach up to 35 feet away from the welding space. To prevent fires, before beginning to weld, inspect the work area for any flammable materials and remove them from the area. Flammable materials are comprised of three categories: liquid, such as gasoline, oil and paint; solid, such as wood, cardboard and paper; gas, including acetylene, propane and hydrogen.

Ergonomics When welding heavy material manually

Special attachments & extensions to interconnection cables reduce welder fatigue for welding at long distances from the Power Source

Rotators are used to rotate a job with circular or cylindrical profile to help the welder consistently without changing his position and welding torch angle continuously

and during assembly welding the loads are very static. Positioning welding also gives high loads. Ergonomic control of Welder’s position, arrangement of rotating tables (rotators and turn tables) is important to reduce welder fatigue and chances of poor weld quality.

Other safety considerations Welders should also be aware of other safety considerations within the work environment. For example, those working in a confined space or in an elevated area make need to take extra precautions. In any welding situation, welding operators should pay close attention safety information on the products being used and the material safety data sheets provided by the manufacturer and work with their employer and co-workers to follow appropriate safe practices for their workplace. Good common sense is also key. If opening cans of electrode, keep hands away from sharp edges. Remove clutter and debris from the welding area to prevent tripping or falling. And never use broken or damaged equipment or PPE. To keep up with the most recent safety practices, welding operators should utilize resources from the American Welding Society (AWS), OSHA and welding manufacturers. By following these safe practices and using common sense, operators can stay safe and keep production moving with no lost-time accidents. Dahua Provides ITS Solution for Mongolia’s Capital

U

laanbaatar, the capital and the largest city of Mongolia with a population over 1.3 million, has almost half of the country’s total population. Over the past decade, the number of vehicles in Ulaanbaatar has risen by more than 300,000. As the political and cultural center of Mongolia, the increasing number of inhabitants and vehicles within the city has caused a series of social, environmental, and transportation problems. Dahua’s sophisticated ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) solution has integrated advanced

software and hardware including sensors, information and data processing and physical electronics and communication technologies to assist the transportation department of Ulaanbaatar, in enhancing the safety and efficiency of its transportation system.

light violations and other road safety related issues, to create a more secure environment for citizens. Due to the high-latitude geography of the city, this project is particularly demanding on the monitoring equipment withstanding harsh environments.

Solution Challenges In recent years, the government of Ulaanbaatar has prioritized the improvement of traffic management and has identified the need of a costeffective solution towards speeding, traffic

Based on advanced intelligent algorithms, Dahua has provided the city with its cutting-edge ITS solution consisting of the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system for 28 main roads, the E-police system for 8 junctions, 2 mobile speed measurement systems as well as 15 high spot PTZ surveillance units. The project took only three months from the initial analysis of the client’s demands and solution design to, the final delivery, overcoming various tough issues along the way.

ANPR System As there are no current systems for license plate recognition in Mongolia, the Dahua team worked in collaboration with a partner to customize a Mongolian license

plate recognition algorithm. This was then integrated into the Dahua traffic cameras, achieving a reliable recognition rate, much to the satisfaction of the client. The Dahua traffic cameras installed at the significant main roads of the city, are able to function between a temperature of - 40 oC ~ + 80 oC and a 10%~90% humidity environment. The cameras will actively monitor and inspect each suspicious vehicle, and automatically capture their license plates in real time, sending out an automatic alert when blacklisted vehicles pass by

E-police System The monitoring equipment set up at the eight junctions, is able to help the Ulaanbaatar transportation authorities in making quick responses to traffic accidents that are caused by running red lights. When a violation occurs, the Dahua all-in-one capture camera takes a series of images of the vehicle’s license plate number, along with the status of the traffic signal and an aerial image of the scene as evidence. Afterwards, the DSS management and storage platform collects the data from each camera, and distributes it to operators for further processing.

Mobile Speed Measuring System The mobile speed measuring system detects vehicles that surpass the speed limit in all weather conditions. The system

features an all-in-one design, making it easy to use and install at different locations at a moment’s notice. This portability allows traffic police to move the system to different places whenever necessary. It consists of an 8MP CCD camera with a multi-target tracking radar, allowing for an accurate instant speed measurement of each passing vehicle and crystal-clear imaging. The IR flash lamp also ensures excellent imaging capabilities even during the dark of night. To better serve the client, the Dahua team has provided the operators of the local transportation department, with relevant technical training and demonstrated to them, the installation and deployment of devices. Additionally, all three systems are unified on a single platform within the

control center, further enabling the end user to a more efficient monitoring and management of road safety.

Benefits Dahua’s ITS solution facilitates road safety and keeps the traffic flowing smoothly, raising the safety awareness of drivers, resulting in a more pleasant journey for drivers. Advanced technologies such as LPR and fuzzy search, actively reduce manpower demands on the police force, while increasing the efficiency of current enforcement. Furthermore, Dahua’s solution has assisted the government of Ulaanbaatar to finance a sustainable, growing, and well-maintained system of security and safety.

Active Fire Protection for Restaurants & Hotels

R Mr. Nitin Joshi, Managing Director, Realty Automation & Security Systems

estaurants and hotels are dotted with fire hazards at every nook and cranny. From huge parking lots to open flames, cooking oils, electrical connections, and paper products in the same vicinity, one tiny spark has the potential to spiral out of control and claim lives as well as cause collateral damage. According to the National Fire Protection Association, over 8000 eateries report a fire annually in the US alone. In spite of the US being a first world nation with stringent safety rules and regulations, fires in restaurants and bars still account for an average of $246 million in damages. Moreover, 57% of fires in restaurant kitchens are traced back to electric malfunctions in cooking equipment, so human error is not the only cause of fires which is the scary part. Even if the staff of the establishment has a perfect track record, there is still scope for a fire caused by errors in machinery. In December 2017, a horrific fire in a rooftop restaurant in Mumbai claimed 14 lives. The fire prompted DNA India to conduct a survey on the preparedness of restaurants to deal with fires. The results were that over 90% of restaurants in Mumbai don’t comply with the fire safety norms! This raises the question, are patrons really safe in restaurants and hotels? While we don’t have the answer to this question, we do have the solutions to make restaurants and hotels safer in terms of detecting, eliminating and suppressing fire hazards. So how does one prepare for the worst? There are various steps that restaurants and hotels can take for ensuring the safety of their patrons, here are a few:

a gas leak detector to detect LPG, PNG, and CNG leaks in commercial establishments is an absolute must. This is the most common type of fire in large kitchens that can do immense damage, but detecting the gas in time can save a lot of trouble. For the cold storage, you need a refrigerant gas leak detector which will sound of an alarm in case of a gas leak. For hotels and larger restaurants, the parking lots always have higher carbon monoxide levels by default, being a closed space with numerous cars that give out emissions. A carbon monoxide gas leak detector is a must for car parking lots. For hotels, there is always a risk of a hydrogen gas leak in the battery rooms, so one must have a detector for hydrogen installed in every battery room. By default, look for systems which are dust and splash proof, since they will be exposed to a lot of both in a kitchen. Also look for systems with the lowest possible response time. You should look for systems with a response time of 1-2 seconds, which means that they should be able to detect a gas leak before it is anywhere close to being a threat, giving the residents ample of time to evacuate the premises and call for help.

Smoke/Fire Alarm Systems This is an emergency measure for fire detection and should be stationed in every room of a hotel or restaurant. You never know what can set off a fire, from cigarettes to electrical malfunctions and accidental fires, a smoke detection system will help the establishment to nip the problem in the bud. Automated systems are more desirable since they will automatically sound off in the entire establishment if necessary, some can also set off sprinklers indoors as well as outdoors.

Gas detectors Depending on your needs, there are a variety of gas detectors available in the market which are designed to cater to different purposes. For restaurant and hotel kitchens,

60

Door Release Systems To make sure that no one is injured, quick evacuation is a must. However, in large hotels, many doors are often pressure sealed,

CASE STUDY

and when people begin to panic, they will try existing from every location possible. To ensure proper evacuation, an active fire protection system must include door release systems which will de-energise the magnetic hold on the fire doors, and will also open servo-actuated vents in stairways. This ensures smooth and panic-free evacuation.

Fire Suppressants The role of fire suppressants in an active fire protection system is to extinguish the fire. This is done manually by means the brave firefighters or it’s an automated process. Ideally, there should be a combination of both, because fire suppressants play an important role in containing fires and preventing them from spreading until assistance reaches you. There are many methods of fire suppression, manual ones include fire extinguishers and standpipe systems, automated suppression systems include sprinkler systems, the automatic

62

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | SEPTEMBER 2018

release of fire retardant gases, introducing a foam which fights fires. Commercial kitchens must always have automated systems because the chances of the fire spiraling out of control are much higher.

Sprinkler Systems These systems should be installed indoors as well as outdoors. The indoor ones usually encompass ceiling level sprinklers that are triggered by heat, so they have their own detection methods which release water from the sprinkler when activated. The purpose of these systems is not necessarily to put out the fire completely, but rather to contain it and prevent it from spreading. A good sprinkler system will also help in minimising collateral damage.

Oxygen Reduction Systems Also known as hypoxic air fire prevention systems, these nifty devices contain fires and prevent them from spreading by reducing

the oxygen concentration so that the ignition process of the fire is curbed. Hypoxic air systems can be automated to be released in time to even prevent a fire. In conclusion, we firmly believe that having active fire protection solutions in place is essential and imperative for the safety of everyone. It is important for restaurants and hotels to source all their equipment from verified and reputed manufacturers, and establish annual maintenance contracts with them so that the equipment are serviced and maintained from time to time. It’s also important to make sure that all the systems are up and running like they’re supposed to so that there is no risk of malfunctions. Training for staff members should be a given. Performing and conducting fire safety drills from time to time goes a long way, in case of an actual accident, order, and logic prevail over panic so that the crisis may be averted intelligently.
