REDESIGNING CHITKARA CAMPUS 1

Urban design is a multi-disciplinary activity to design large built-up spaces like, streets, towns, suburbs, neighbourhoods and cities. All the components of urban designing and planing have being properly composed in the site to improve our transportation system, infrastructure, the layout, and prescribed densities of our residential and educational buildings. Without such planning, our site quickly become inefficient and uninviting for students, residents and businesses alike.

about. The project was to to redesign the Chitkara University, Punjab campus site incorporating the urban design principles learnt during the course. It is a vibrant research environment, active day and night. Each school will have a building with a distinct identity, clustered together to maximize communication, exchange of ideas, and innovation. All schools connect to a unifying Academic Loop building.

2

• Site experiences warm and temperate climate. • Temperate in winters ranges from 7c to 18c. The winters begin around November and last up to February. • During summer, the site experiences temperatures rising up to 37c whereas the average lies around 29c. • The soil found in this area is loamy, i.e., a mixture of clay, sand, and silt. • This type of soil is advantageous for construction because of its evenly balanced properties, especially how it maintains water at a balanced rate. Loam is a good soil for supporting a foundation. These soils are fertile, easy to work with and provide good drainage.

The site is placed in an extremely open area with a hospital in the front, on the opposite site of the access road. The other three sides are occupied with green open fields that allow sun and wind to freely move around in the site. The dominant axis of the site is North-South with a total area of 71 acre, out of which, 44.5 acre has been used.

5

• Concrete, steel, Aluminum, Glass, and Later Plastics became the dominant construction materials, beyond Stone and Wood. • Power supply, artificial lighting, water supply and disposal, thermal environment control within built-environment, are no longer the luxuries but are the necessities today. • Over the years Indian architects are striving hard for striking a balance between Providing modern amenities and comforts and reducing the negative impact of buildings on the natu-

materials available. 6

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

FIRST FLOOR PLAN

The elements applied in the main academic structure is a blend of symmetry, harmony, and rythm shown in each floor plan, as well as elevation. These floors have been planned and ranges in order of requirements, quantity and other environmental factors. The concept for the form of the structure revolves around the shape of the hand, as proposed by Le Corbusier. The Open Hand (La Main Ouverte) in Chandigarh is a frequent theme in Le Corbusier’s architecture, a symbol for him of “peace and reconciliation. It is open to give and open to receive”. 7

OPEN

SPACES

is the closest thing to describe sea and make you feel the sound of sea waves and its movement. If the human went through the state of tension and fatiguit will resort to nature as a natural reaction to search for a fresh air that The main concept is inspired from the wave. That form is being used in our main ceantral recreational area , provididng us with proper sitting and gathering space. This space can be used for different functions or occasions, also making it an interactive zone.

ABOUT SITE The building is designed in

such a way that the design can follow the winter sun path to max heat gain. It would also require sufficient shading from direct sunlight during cooling months. Horizontal shading device are used to allow sunlight in winters, and not allow sunlight during summers.

C fabonacci spiral. O N C E P T

Being the most perfect ratio, Fibonacci spiral can be found abundantly in nature. Nature uses the rhythm and repetition of the Fibonacci sequence in many forms. Even the Classical buildings like Parthenon were built by implying the golden ratio. Using this Fibonacci spiral as an InspiraWtion, the main blocks are placed in a such a manner that a central path which would connect all the blocks is laid down in the shape of a golden spiral.
