The mixed-use complex strategically places industrial functions on lower levels to address environmental concerns and rising water levels. The upper levels adopt a modular approach for swift residential community construction. The project prioritizes natural light for energy efficiency and configures facade louvers at specific angles. Volume adjustments in the residential portion are based on winter solstice light angles, with extensive testing of three density and angle configurations for the louver systems.

The project is called the Boyle Heights Community Ceramic Gallery, located at site A. The site is characterized by a lower terrain to the southwest and a higher terrain to the northeast. To the south, it is adjacent to a subway station and a music center, where artists occasionally perform in the square, creating a lively atmosphere. To the north is a hospital, providing a quieter ambiance. Therefore, the project opts to preserve the original terrain of the site and design the lower levels of the building to gradually ascend to accommodate the elevation changes, connecting through interior atrium steps and outdoor plazas. The community center spans approximately 37,000 sqm, with spaces evenly distributed between the north and south sections. The southern area primarily consists of public exhibition spaces, while the north houses ceramic studios connected to upperlevel office spaces, a library, and a rooftop terrace. The building volume appears soft and intriguing, resembling clustered cylinders, primarily influenced by three factors: firstly, considering the surrounding circular historical music square and arc-shaped paving installations in the plaza. Secondly, drawing inspiration from the primary function of being a ceramic community gallery, the design abstracts the primitive kilns used for firing ceramics as a prototype foundation. Lastly, reflecting LA's urban ambiance and color culture, the designers translate their interpretation, believing that LA's art centers should be more vibrant and flexible.

1. Relief

Emergency relief camps need to include medical assistance, housing units, sanitation, and basic food and water.

The author believes that the victims largely depend on the material packages distributed by the government and international aid agencies at this stage, such as tarps or tents in Haiti. If the rescue center is in an existing building, it is essential to separate the units, which can be partitioned using tarps or tents.

2. Recover

At this stage, the simple tent structure can no longer meet the daily needs of the victims, and the camp needs to increase the necessary living infrastructure and public services, such as kitchens, storage, and education.

The replacement of the structure or gradual replacement of the material is desirable. Bamboo is very compressible and pliable, so the whole column can be used as a pole to support the tarp. The tarp can be gradually replaced with dry teak leaves, or the bamboo can be drawn, woven, and painted into the waterproof bamboo film.

3. Develop

The author believes that at this stage, based on the transitional stage, the camp functions and living units should be improved again according to the building functions and the needs of the residents, such as community gardens, hand industrial areas, public landscape facilities, and more elaborate bamboo houses.

Fideism or Scientism?

Individual Adviser: Ting Chen

The wilderness cycle reveals the majesty and bravery of wild yaks while highlighting the complex interplay of humans, technology, religion, and animals in the evolution of human civilization. It's clear that humans must coexist with these remarkable creatures, the wild yaks.

In the past, Tibetans were known for their simple beliefs and basic material needs. However, the impact of modernism, science, and material desires has gradually eroded these traditional beliefs in some Tibetan regions.

This project is located in Yarochambo Snow Mountain, Shannan, Lhasa, a sacred Tibetan site. Its purpose is to capture the essence of traditional belief and the significance of death in Tibetan culture through architectural spaces, offering a sensory experience for both pilgrims and tourists.

Different new cultures have been integrated into the original belief culture of Tibetan, resulting in the replacement of Bonism with Buddhism. Then the spread of Modern Science has gradually weakened the religious belief in some Tibetan areas.

• Simple and symbolic rock paintings

• Sacrificial activities and natural worship

• A unified religious worldview

• Sacrifices to gods and masters

• Dance, body language, incantations, songs, fire sacrifices, blood sacrifices and special instruments

• Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty introduced Buddhism to the Tubo.

• Sontzen Gampo fostered Indian Buddhism and suppressed Bonism.

• Tibetan Buddhism has revived.

• A religion believed by all Tibetans.

• Animism——all creatures are spiritual

• Worship ghosts and gods, with the form of sorcery

• Interpenetration of ideas

• In Buddhism, all living beings are equal and reincarnate.

• New, scientific and reasonable explanations

• Religion has gradually weakened in everyday life.

Land of the Gods - The Cycle of Wilderness

Human beings have always been exploring the meaning of nature and life. In this documentary, people explore the harmonious coexistence of human, animal and nature by visiting the mysterious no man's land of Qiangtang and the wild yaks in the snow mountain. Crossing the vast and magnificent Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the helplessness and relief of herdsmen, as well as the local legend of Bonism Religion, were recorded through the lens.

Consumerism's growth leads to the emergence of new consumption spaces and intensifies people's desire to consume. Some believe that purchasing power signifies the ability to access social resources, reflecting one's social status.

Drawing from Jungian Archetypes, individuals have a persona and shadow. When beliefs like 'I shop, therefore I exist' and 'More spending power means greater status' take hold, people shop excessively to conform, eroding their individuality.

This project explores architectural typology to create diverse spaces, categorizing shopping patterns across eras and extracting prototypes. The mall's aboveground is a shopping center, the mirrored underground a factory. The project highlights how the persona's intensification can diminish individuality in the absurd world of excessive consumption.
