If you’re suffering from lumbar disc or neuropathy, you must read about this non-surgical treatment...

Lower Back Pain Secrets Revealed ... “Find Out What The Drug Companies Don’t Want You To Know!”

CA-10434756

If you suffer from the following conditions… •Sciatica •Disc degeneration •Lower back pain/neck pain •Numbness and burning in the legs and feet •Radiating hip pain •Neuropathy •Fibromyalgia …there may be hope. Now, a local doctor has what may be the most important treatment in helping these conditions. If You Read Nothing Else, Read This: Millions of Americans suffer from lumbar disc pain and sciatica. Sciatica is a compression of the sciatic nerve, usually by an L4 or L5 disc herniation or degeneration. As you know, sciatica can be a very painful problem, even crippling at times. This painful condition interferes with your body’s ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, these problems can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of disc pain and sciatica. Read the full facts on this page.

Finally, there’s a treatment to conquer back and leg pain without dangerous medications or painful surgery. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally but physically feeling held back from life because you hurt and the pain just won’t go away! Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough Vicodin, Soma or some other pill, but the real problem is while you make it through the day all “numbed up”, you are likely making your problem even worse…without knowing it. No matter where you are with back pain, whether you’re having unrelenting foot pain and facing surgery or you just injured it yesterday, a treatment called low level laser therapy may be the answer for you. Two landmark studies have proven the effectiveness of cold lasers. The first study showed patients who used the laser therapy had less pain and more range of motion days after treatment. If the laser therapy can help these patients, it can help you too. These second study showed that patients who had laser

therapy had 53% better improvement than those who just had a placebo. Are you suffering from sciatica or back pain? If so, relief may be easier than you think. Could This Non-Invasive Treatment Eliminate Your Back and Sciatica Pain? My name is Dr. Russ Schroder, Clinic Director at the D-C Chiropractic Neurology Center in Zanesville. I understand what it feels like to live in pain, because I see it everyday. I’ve seen hundreds of people with back pain, numbness, and foot pain leave the office pain free. This is why for 10 days only, I’m running a very special offer where you can find out if you are a candidate for cold laser. What these studies mean is that you could soon be enjoying life…without those aggravating nerve problems. It’s time for you to find out if this will be your back pain and sciatica solution. How Much Does It Cost? For 10 days only, $45 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $245 for! *What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive: •An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. •A consultation with Dr. Russ Schroder, D.C., D.A.C.N.B., F.A.C.F.N. -Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologists and Functional Neurologist, & Chiropractor to discuss your questions you may have. •A complete back/neck/nerve pain qualification case history and questionnaire to help determine if you are a candidate. •A thorough Neurological Exam •A Free follow-up consultation, If you qualify for our program and what your options are. •*Excludes further testing or treatment. Here’s what to do now: Call 740-454-1747 and tell one of my Special Assistants that you want a “Cold Laser Decompression Qualification Evaluation.” If you call in the next 10 days, you will be eligible to receive all the above for only $45. The normal cost is $245. Due to the expected demand, it is suggested to call at once. Any delay could lead to being placed on a waiting list and paying fullprice. You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this painless treatment will be your back pain and sciatica solution, like it has been for so many other patients. And the good news is, most patients respond quickly to laser treatments. Our office is located on the corner of 3rd and Main Streets in downtown Zanesville. When you call, tell my Special Assistant you’d like to come in for the Cold Laser Decompression Evaluation so she can make sure you receive proper credit for this special offer. Sincerely, Dr. Russ Schroder D.C.D.A.C.N.B., F.A.C.F.N. The quickest and easiest way to discover if cold laser relief program will be the answer to your back, neck or nerve pain like it has been for hundreds of patients just like you…is to call… Right now! Here’s what patients are saying about us: My name is Steve Vincent, and I am a Zanesville City Firefighter. You may see the fireworks I put on downtown or hear my voice at the cake auction each year. As you can imagine, 2 out of the 3 are physically demanding. I’ve got to admit that I may have been a surgical statistic this year if it weren’t for Dr. Russ. I’ve had back problems for a decade now, but in the past couple of years it was getting noticeably worse. I had Chiropractic care before that had helped for a while. I bought a home inversion table that stretched me. I exercised, rested, iced, and heated my low-back, but it was quickly worsening on a much more consistent basis. I even crunched down vitamins and herbs to help the pain, but nothing was giving me consistent or lasting relief. I consulted with a couple surgeons this past year, and I was starting to think that surgery might be my next/ last option. Then I read Dr. Russ had a new DRX machine put in this year that gets miraculous results with herniated and bulging discs. Since I had already checked out the other so-called alternatives to decompression, I chose the DRX9000 and his office because he explained to me exactly what the treatments did and how they were the safest, least invasive, and most effective choice available. And I’m here today to tell you that even two months after my treatment plan is done my back feels ten years younger! It’s been feeling this good since halfway through my program and I haven’t looked back. Hi, my name is Loretta and I drive two hours, one way to visit Dr. Russ. I have had three major back surgeries, resulting in 3 fusions, one in my neck and two in my lower back. I’ve had increasing pain since 2004 and I finally had another MRI in September, which resulted in four doctors telling me I needed more surgeries. I had three bulges in my neck and one in my lower back. I actually made an appointment with the surgeon and in the meantime while I was waiting for the day of my appointment, a friend gave me Dr. Russ’s ad from the paper. I came to see him and he told me he could help me. I went home and cancelled my appointment and then started my treatments up here. After six treatments on the DRX9000 machine, I was able to go out and shop without having to look for a bench every 15 minutes. I then went home and worked for three and a half hours at home and I had no back pain in my lower back. After four more treatments I started noticing less pain in my neck and shoulders, and now I can happily say I’m practically pain free. I have one more treatment and then I will be done. I can’t say enough about Dr. Russ and his wonderful staff. They’re very knowledgeable and very friendly. I would highly recommend to anybody having debilitating pain, or have been told they need surgery to come and see them, they’re wonderful! -- Loretta Doll My name is Melissa. I’m 39 years old and I have Disc degeneration. I hurt my lower back when I was a teenager and have had pain in my lower back for many years off and on. The past two years I’ve really been in a lot of pain. I’ve tried therapy, pain shots and all kinds of pain pills. They didn’t work. I spent a lot of my time in bed or on the couch. Many days I couldn’t work or get out of bed. I didn’t know what else to try. Then my friend told me that she had the same problem and told me about the DRX9000. I thought “Why not try it?” So I went to Dr. Russ’ office and started treatments and after the third one I could feel the difference and by my last treatment I was pain free. The treatments are painless and so relaxing. Dr. Russ and staff are great. They explained everything about my treatment and made me feel comfortable. I am now back to my normal, everyday routine. Thanks again Dr. Russ and Staff. You have changed my life greatly. God Bless. PAID ADVERTISEMENT

that they can keep control. Your goal is to help them keep control—not relinquish it to government or strangers in some courtroom. • Stay focused on your parents' concerns. This is all about them—not your needs or wants. Perhaps they're worried that they'll outlive their resources, or that the kids will fight over the estate and the family will break apart. They may be struggling with finding a fair way of dividing up what they'll leave behind. Rather than confront these issues, sometimes they would rather not talk about them or just plain avoid them altogether. • If you feel they're uncomfortable talking with you, ask them to see an estate planning attorney, which they will have to talk to anyway to do the drafting. • One way of approaching the issue more subtly is to share with them your experience of setting up a will or doing your own estate planning: “Mom, you'll never believe what I learned the other day. If I set up a trust I can ….” Or, “I just made out my living will, and did you know that …” or “Dad, I want you to know that I named Jeff [your husband] as my durable health care power of attorney. This is how it works …” These create an opening to discuss how your parents have addressed or not addressed these issues. • Share with them an actual story of how someone who didn't have a will or estate planning caused his or her children to lose a great deal of their parent's hard-earned wealth through taxes and probate. • If you know of a smart and better way for your parents to leave you money (for example, via a trust) you might try, “Dad, I don't know what you're leaving me, and that's okay, but you might want to consider setting up a trust so that the money will be protected in case someone should sue me in my work.” Money has long been at the root of many a divorce. We all know that there have been many fights over how money is spent in a household. Tread carefully in bringing this up with your parents. Just keep remembering that it is their money. Your motive ought to be about helping them (if they need the help) to meet their needs and wishes regarding the preservation and handing down of their assets as they see fit. And remember that an inheritance, if you receive one, is a gift, not a right. I hope this article has done two things. First, that it helped you approach your loved ones about helping them to do their estate planning. Secondly, that it will make you think about your own estate planning needs, whether it be creating your first estate plan for you and your loved ones or to remind you to update your existing estate planning to protect yourself and your loved ones. Remember that statistics show that only about 35% of Americans have any estate plan at all. Don’t be one of the 65% putting themselves and their loved ones in peril. Talk to your parents and grandparents and see if you can initiate them scheduling an appointment with an estate planning attorney. If you would like more information please go to our website at www.fmcclurelaw.com or contact our office. We do provide a complimentary workshop.

How to stay safe & warm during winter workouts Athletes devoted to outdoor workouts do not abandon their routines when winter rears its chilly head. While it can be difficult to embrace the great outdoors when temperatures hover around the freezing point, maintaining your motivation at such times bodes well for your fitness goals the rest of the year. Staying warm is a top priority for athletes who exercise outdoors during the winter months. While there’s no guarantee winter winds won’t test your willpower, there are some ways to stay warm when working out in colder climates. • Wear appropriate headgear. For years, many people subscribed to the conventional wisdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they would be just as cold when going outside without a hat on as they would be if they left home without wearing any pants. But wearing headgear when exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. A wool hat you can pull down over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also want to consider ski masks or other facial covers that can protect their faces when winter winds are howling. • Layer correctly. Layering has long been a reliable way to beat the cold when temperatures are at their lowest. But layering must be done correctly to be effective. When choosing your workout

gear, choose an inner layer that will move moisture away from your skin. Cotton retains moisture, and that means your sweat will cling to your body and make you feel cold. Once you find a shirt made with moisture-wicking material to wear against your skin, look for a second layer that also wicks moisture so you can more effectively control your body temperature. Your outer layer should be capable of handling the elements, so look for something that is waterproof and wind-resistant. • Don’t forget footwear. Feet can easily succumb to cold temperatures when exercising outdoors, but you can employ the same strategy with your socks that you do with your layers. When choosing workout socks, avoid cotton socks that don’t wick moisture away from your feet. Acrylic can be more effective at wicking moisture away from your feet than cotton. • Know your weather reports. While it’s admirable to stay on course with your outdoor workouts in the winter, don’t allow your devotion to overtake your common sense. Check the forecast before beginning an outdoor exercise, paying particular attention to the wind chil. According to the Mayo Clinic, frostbite can occur when skin is exposed to wind chill levels below minus 18 F for 30 minutes. If need be, shorten outdoor workout routines and find ways to exercise indoors when wind chills get dangerously low. Exercising outdoors in winter can be exhilarating, but athletes must prioritize staying warm and safe for the duration of their workouts.

LOOKING BACK

Odyssey of the Colonel's Daughter: Gertrude Taylor Slaughter

Story by Rick Booth The rules forbade canal jaunts on moonlit nights. But Gertrude Slaughter and her husband, Stephen, could not resist the temptation of moon, water, and the grandeur of darkened Venice in wartime Italy. Taking chances, they and their gondolier poled and drifted in the night, up and down through the romantic moonlit byways... until the scream of sirens told an air raid was on its way. Caught miles from home, the truant trio quickly took shelter from bombs, bullets, and shrapnel beneath the famously beautiful Rialto Bridge in their gondola. Search lights scanned for Axis planes, and the pounding of antiaircraft guns echoed through the liquid canyons of the city. Surviving the assault, the next day, Stephen and Gertrude went back to work running the Venice district's Red Cross effort. It was 1918, and 48-year-old Gertrude was little more than half way through her remarkable life odyssey that began as a colonel's daughter in Cambridge, Ohio. Gertrude Elizabeth Taylor was born in a house at the northeast corner of Wheeling Avenue at Sixth Street, the location of today's Hotel Berwick building, which her father, Colonel Joseph D. Taylor, built when she was a teen. Her father was arguably the most prominent, influential — and likely the richest — citizen of Cambridge throughout the last few decades of the nineteenth century, as described in last month's history column. Born in 1870, "Gertie" grew up in Cambridge, but had almost an equal store of childhood memories of days spent visiting her mother's family in Elizabeth Taylor's monument, scanning 11th Street

The Rialto Bridge, an air raid safe haven.

North Berwick, Maine. During her lifetime, she authored and published seven books, the last of which was her autobiography, written in 1962, the year before she died. The latter book and microfilm records found at the Guernsey County Genealogy Society are the source of much of the information in this article. In achieving as much as he did in life, Gertrude's father was apparently what we would describe today as a workaholic. Though he was affectionate and caring with his children, he was also absent a lot, leaving the day to day matters of raising his daughter and son to his wife, the former Elizabeth Hill of North Berwick, Maine, whom he met in Cincinnati while serving as an army officer in the Civil War. She, in turn, came from a prominent and rather wealthy Quaker family, owners of her home town's textile mill. When she agreed to marry a Methodist man from the Midwest, some of her closest relatives felt she had betrayed her community, so they refused to attend the wedding. It was moved out of state to the John Adams house in Boston to avoid embarrassment. A Methodist! Unthinkable!! Nevertheless, the bride's father ranked her happiness first and gave her away willingly, later to become a fast friend of his son-in-law and an investor in Col. Taylor's business ventures. Indeed, it may have been projects bankrolled from Maine that helped build the Taylor fortune. The influence of Gertrude's mother on her life cannot be overstated. The description given in the autobiography is of a warm, saintly, hard-working, compassionate woman who did all she could to support her husband's career and her children's welfare at the same time. Trips to Maine were frequent, and summers were almost always spent there with

the children. Young Gertie learned to love the hills and forests and streams of Maine at least as much as the allures of Appalachian Ohio. She fell in love with the sea, too, in those Maine summers, maintaining a lifelong love of sailing as a result. Not that Wills Creek isn't wonderful in its own peculiar way, but Gertrude's mother always lamented that the streams in Ohio were all muddy — nothing like the clear mountain brooks tumbling over clean, stony beds she had known "Down East." One of Gertrude's aunts from Maine, on an early visit to Cambridge, likewise described the town and the surrounding countryside as "ramshackle and neglected, as if no one had the time or the inclination to tidy up." To folks from a proper Quaker New England town, Cambridge was the disorderly Wild West! Though Col. Taylor built his beautiful Victorian mansion — today the Col. Taylor Inn — to be his family's dream home, Gertrude's fondest childhood memories were of the earlier house on Wheeling Avenue. Even though it didn't have all the modern amenities of the mansion, it had warmth and a pleasant sense of mystery. Whereas the mansion had even heating throughout, Gertrude recalled the pleasure of huddling by the fires in the older home. Whereas the lighting was ample in the newer house, the young girl enjoyed the play of shadows in dark hallways at the old. And her best friend Gertrude Taylor Slaughter, young and old. and cousin, Charlene Taylor, lived just next door downtown. When the family finally occupied their dream home, then set in a peach orchard north of town, friends were farther away, but Gertie was about 14 by then and made do with the constant stream of house guests they entertained, and with seeing her friends at school. In the spring of 1887, Gertrude's mother contracted a serious, lingering illness. One day she said to her daughter, "God has given me an easy life to live, and an easy death to die." Gertrude was stunned to realize her mother might not survive. Elizabeth Taylor passed away just weeks short

of Gertrude's high school graduation, and the young girl was heartbroken, crying herself to sleep for months, as she describes it. A beautiful granite monument topped by a standing woman, easily visible from the road, still marks Mrs. Taylor's grave in the Old City Cemetery on South Eleventh Street in Cambridge. Col. Taylor, who died a dozen years later, is buried at her side. Because Col. Taylor served four terms in Congress, Gertrude and her brother got to know Washington, D.C., quite well, too, from 1883 onwards. Both before and - Gertrude Taylor Slaughter, 1962 after graduating from Cambridge High School in 1887, Gertrude received college preparatory schooling while first living with family, and later boarding, in the nation's capital. Extracurricular activities there included visits to the Capitol Building for congressional debates, and even White House receptions, where she once excitedly reported in a letter to her grandfather that the President gave her a kiss! She was also proud of the two beautiful white Arabian horses that drew the family's carriage through the streets. Bryn Mawr College was a relatively new women's institution in the Philadelphia area when Gertrude was ready to apply for entrance. They used the same entrance exam as Harvard, with one significant modification. Whereas the Massachusetts slackers had only to demonstrate proficiency in two foreign languages to gain entrance, Bryn Mawr required three. Anxious to add Greek to her linguistic repertoire there (so she could read the Iliad just as Homer wrote it!), Gertie gained acceptance in 1889 by demonstrating her knowledge of Latin, French, and German. Years later, she learned Italian, too. Somewhat dangerously, a close relationship had developed between Gertrude and her college preparatory Latin professor, a scholar ten years her senior. With her father's hesitant blessing, she became secretly engaged to Dr. Moses Stephen Slaughter. When the truth came out while she attended college, she accepted the gentle teasing of

“Do You Suffer from these Seven Symptoms of this Often Misdiagnosed Problem?...”

CA-10434752

Tens of millions suffer, and often don’t know where to turn...

Dear friend, The problem is often misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed at all. But, it affects the lives of between 10 and 20 million Americans. This problem can cause: 1. Numbness. 2. Burning pain. 3. Cramping. 4. Sharp, electric pain. 5. Hurt when you walk. 6. Difficulty sleeping from leg/foot discomfort. 7. Prickling/tingling feelings. If you suffer from one or more of these problems, you may have peripheral neuropathy. And, if you do, you’re not alone. Often, these good people have been frustrated by the traditional care they’ve received for these terrible problems, and are still seeking help. These problems can be caused by diabetes, hereditary disorders, inflammation, medications such as cholesterol lowering (statin) drugs, and more. For the past 14 years, I’ve studied this class of conditions, collectively known as “peripheral neuropathies.” In fact, helping people with these problems has become a primary focus of mine. It’s not unusual for me to hear stories from patients who’ve suffered for years with terrible symptoms. For many, they are missing out on the things they love to do. They aren’t enjoying life as they once did. If that describes you, then perhaps I can help. I practice a multi-pronged attack to these problems. It’s a unique program that only about 1,000 doctors worldwide have studied and are certified in. That’s why I’ve put together the “Neuropathy Pain Relief Program” for anyone suffering from the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy pain. And, the beautiful thing is that when these health situations are resolved, people have great improvements in the quality of their lives. In many cases, they finally can live pain free, with peace and joy in their lives again. I’m a proud member of Dr. Johnson-trained Functional Neurologists on LifeChangingCare.com. This gives me a unique set of knowledge and tools that have been tested, researched, and found to be effective.

Here’s what some of your neighbors have to say: “Hello, my name is Perry Brown and I am from Macdowell, Kentucky. I’ve been to hospitals for the last 9 years with neuropathy in my feet and none of them could tell me what caused it or what the cure is. I came to Zanesville here to Dr. Russ Schroder and I didn’t think that he was going to be able to do anything either, but I’ve been with him for 2 months now and the feeling is coming back in my feet, the color is coming back, the swelling is gone out of them and I’ve lost 60 pounds. I am doing real good.” “I have neuropathy very bad, pains very

bad, but the sharp pains I have not had this week. Those bad sharp pains (that I had for months and months) are not there. I was able to start walking and I was off my walker. That’s pretty good for a week!” D. Wagner (Marietta) “I have had neuropathy in my feet. They were numb for a year, maybe longer. Amazingly, it’s only been three weeks and I told my wife this morning I can feel things in my feet that I hadn’t feltî Ken, Zanesville Innovative care Powerful results You can’t have nerve pressure or ‘pinched nerves’ and get better from neuropathy. Using the latest in technology, I offer non-invasive care. I help patients get well with literally no twisting or popping of their spine because I use patented adjusting instrumentation that is highly-re-search-ed, lowforce and computerized. When the nerve pressure from the spine is more severe, we use Non-surgical Cold Laser Decompression. This frees the nerves, and the damage caused by old herniated discs or arthritis.

More about this Unique Care We also use Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT). It’s a newly developed tool that’s very safe. This noninvasive healing light has been proven to work wonders on peripheral neuropathy symptoms. Also the Rebuilder© which is an electrical nerve stimulator that works to rebuild damaged nerves. About Me I became Board Certified in Chiropractic Neurology and completed my Fellowship in Functional Neurology in 2011 and have been helping even some of the worst cases of neuropathy since then. At our Neurology Center, our goal is to get the word out to as many people as we can that our Neuropathy Program may be for you! Do You Qualify For This New Program? When you call and make an appointment, I’ll perform a highly-specialized Neuropathy Scoring Exam of the nerves in the legs and feet to see if we may be able to help. But, please call right away because we can take only the first 15 callers. If you are one of these 15, I’ll do this Evaluation and Qualifying Process for only $45. The normal cost is $245. Due to the expected demand, it is suggested to call 740-454-1747 at once. Any delay could lead to being placed on a waiting list and paying full price. Add some peace to your life or the life of someone you love. Call today to make an appointment. We can help you. Thank you, Dr. Russ Schroder, D.C., FACFN, DACNB P.S. Does your spouse, family member, or friend suffer from neuropathy? This offer is also available to them, too. You can even come in together. Their lack of health affects your life also. Maybe this will be your chance to really give them the help they need. P.P.S. CAR TIPS Snow tires a worthy investment Automotive experts say that snow tires are a worthy investment that improve maneuverability and stopping power on winter roads. Many people leave all-season tires on their vehicles throughout the year, but snow tires may help decrease snow-related accidents and may even help drivers save money on their auto insurance. Consumer Reports says that autumn is the best time to buy snow tires. As drivers prepare their vehicles for winter, the following snow tire tutorial can shed some light on why driving in winter is safer with snow tires. • Snow tires are particularly helpful for people who cannot wait for roads to be cleared before they begin their days. Snow tires provide greater traction in wet, snowy or slushy conditions. Snow tires provide ample grip and make it easier for cars to turn corners and stop on slick roads. • As the mercury falls, the rubber used to make traditional tires can become hard and less pliable, compromising its ability to grip the road. However, many snow tires are made with a specialized rubber that remains supple even in very cold

temperatures, making it easier for the tire to hug the roadways even when those roads are in poor condition. • People who live in very cold climates and areas where snow and ice dominate the landscape for several months per year often find all-season tires are inadequate and likely to slip. Snow tires make for safer alternatives in such regions. • Snow tires are typically manufacturered the previous summer, meaning inventory is finite, according to Consumer Reports. Drivers who wait until the first snowstorm to purchase their snow tires may encounter limited inventory and find it difficult to locate the right size tire for their vehicles. That’s why it’s important to shop early. • Retire snow tires earlier than you would all-season tires. Snow tires lose almost all of their effectiveness once they reach 6/32-inch deep tread. Snow tires can make roads safer for drivers who live in locales with long, snowy winters. They also are ideal for drivers who desire more traction, cornering and stopping capacity on winter roadways.

Things to consider before downsizing your home Once their kids have left the nest, many men and women over 50 begin to consider downsizing their homes. Downsizing to a smaller home can be beneficial for a variety of reasons, including less home to clean and maintain, more affordable utility bills and lower property taxes. But the decision to downsize is rarely black and white, and men and women often struggle with that decision. Perhaps the most difficult part of the decision of whether or not to downsize to a smaller home concerns the sentimental attachment many homeowners, especially those with children, have to their homes. The home might be too big for your current

Personal finances Your financial situation merits significant consideration when deciding if the time is right to downsize your home. If your retirement nest egg is not as substantial as you would like it to be, then it would seem as though downsizing to a smaller, more affordable home is a great opportunity for you to start catching up on your retirement savings. But that's only true if your new home won't incur any additional expenses that are already taken care of in your current home. For example, your current home may be fully furnished, while a new, smaller home may require you to buy all new furniture because your existing items simply won't fit. The cost of such furnishings can be considerable. If you plan to move into a condominium, you can expect to pay monthly homeowners association fees, and such fees are often substantial. So while the condo itself might be smaller, the additional expenses associated with the property may end up making the smaller home more expensive and prevent you from saving more money for retirement. Real estate market There are seller's markets and there are buyer's markets, and ideally you would like to sell your home in a seller's market. But keep in mind that this might be the same market in which you hope to buy a new home. The nature of the real estate market depends on a host of factors, including geography. If the city or town where you currently live is in the midst of a seller's market and you are planning on moving to a location where buyers have the upper hand, then now might be a great time to move. But if you currently live in a buyer's market and hope to move to a seller's market, then you may end up paying a steep price, even when downsizing to a smaller home. Things may even themselves out if you want to downsize to a smaller home within your current community, but do your homework nonetheless, researching the time of year when you're most likely to get the most for your home and find the best deal on your next place. The advantage men and women considering downsizing have is that they are rarely in a rush to move out of their current home and into their next one. This gives them ample time to make the real estate market work for them.

needs, but it also was the same place where your son took his first steps and where your daughter lost her first tooth. Saying goodbye to a place that was home to so many memories isn't easy. But there's more than just sentimental value to consider when deciding whether or not to downsize your home after the kids have grown up and moved out.

Space How much space do you really need? Once the kids have moved out, couples may feel like all of that extra space is going to waste. But that can be a knee-jerk reaction, and upon a more thorough examination of the space and your needs you may just find that you can put all of that extra square footage to good use after all. If you have always wanted your own art studio, then now might be the perfect time to make that a reality. Always wanted a room devoted to home theater? Get to work on converting your basement from an all-purpose game room to your own private movie theater. If, after considering the space in your home, you find that the extra square footage really is just upkeep you aren't especially interested in doing, then you would no doubt like a cozier home that's less of a responsibility to maintain. Downsizing a home is something many men and women over 50 consider after their children have moved out. Such a decision is rarely easy, so homeowners should take as much time as they need before making a final decision to move or stay put.

February A Month of Many Occasions

Story by Harriette Orr Here it is February, the shortest month of the year. This year it is 29 days long, not the usual 28 due to being a leap year. Every four years, we add one day to the end of February to keep the calendar in rhythm with the Earth’s orbit around the sun. Despite February being the shortest month, there are plenty of holidays that have come and gone throughout the years. In 46 BC Julius Caesar and the astronomer Sosigens developed the Roman calendar, which consisted of 365 days divided into 12 months. This left a surplus of 11 minutes each year, creating a difference between the solar year and calendar year. Pope Gregory XIII implemented the Gregorian calendar in 1582, which included a leap year every four years except in years where the number of the year is not evenly divisible by 100 or 400. For example, 1900 was the fourth year, but it is not evenly divided by 400 February only had 28 days that year. We use the Gregorian calendar system today. It is not perfect by any means and may have to be changed in ten thousand years. Many traditions and superstitions have grown from the leap year. The Greeks thought it was bad luck for anyone married during the year while in Scotland it was considered a bad omen to be born on leap day. The extra day in a leap year produced one of the first early women’s rights movements in Ireland. Legend states that St. Brigid finagled St. Patrick into agreeing that a woman could propose marriage only on this extra day in February. There were some strange laws in place for the upper class during the Medieval times. In some places it was a law that if a man refused a marriage proposal in a leap year he had to compensate the girl with money, material for a dress or twelve pairs of gloves to cover the shame of her empty ring finger. Can you imagine the chagrin of handsome bachelors having to buy fabric or gloves for the women who proposed to them during the leap year? The only thing that might relate to today is a Sadie Hawkins dance where the gals get to ask the guys to dance, or ladies choice at a square dance. There are several other holidays that have taken over the excitement of a leap year. Among them are Groundhog Day, Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day. The 2nd of February is known throughout the United States as Groundhog Day. This day we celebrate the old

German custom that if a burrowing animal sees his shadow when he emerges from his hole, there will be six more weeks of winter. If there is no shadow to scare him back in his hole, spring will be early. In the state of Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil has been predicting the coming of spring since the 1800’s. In Ohio we have Buckeye Chuck who resides in Marion, Ohio. He is not as well known as his fellow groundhog, but his predictions are just as reliable and he has quite the following. I was in grade school in the late 1940s and we looked forward to celebrating President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 12th, and then President George Washington’s birthday on February 22. These days were made special because we did not have to attend school. Now these days have been combined into Presidents’ Day, celebrated on the 3rd Monday of February in order to give workers a three-day weekend. What started out as a pagan Roman celebration might be today’s the most celebrated day in February. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, February 14th, Americans purchase over 190 million Valentine cards annually. This does not count the millions exchanged by school children nor the millions of e-cards sent. Over time Valentine’s Day has become a big event for children with special programs and parties at school where kids decorating boxes with fancy paper and lacy hearts. Valentine’s Day was originally only celebrated by lovers. In the U.S. the first mass-produced Valentines with paper lace and fancy hearts were made by Esther Howland of Massachusetts in 1847. Beginning in the 1900s not only were people sending cards, they started to include lovely bouquets of flowers, roses and lilies. As time went on candies were displayed in beautiful heart shaped boxes. Jewelers began creating heart shaped lockets, brooches and rings. Diamonds became a coveted gift from your lover. By the end of the century Valentine’s Day became the most profitable day of the year for retailers. While February seems to have many holidays to remember and opportunities to celebrate, you can make any day special by remembering those you love. Sharing a memory, creating a new one or simply doing some small act of kindness may enrich your life as well as theirs. Harriette Orr can be reached at dhoor@roadrunner.com.

With the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the buzz about a revival of Ghostbusters, we may wonder about originality in the movie industry. It seems that there is always at least one movie at the box office with a familiar ring to its plot line or title. Does this mean the movie industry is out of ideas? Perhaps not, the remaking, rebooting and revival of movies results in some change whether it is to the plot or character line up, but a perfect balance must be met for companies to prove advantageous in the endeavor. The release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was both anticipated and looked upon with trepidation. Many fans of the original Star Wars favored the idea of a new addition to the series, but they were worried about the integrity of the movie due to new ownership. At the movie’s end, many left the theater happy, but certain that the next installment would decide the quality of this new trilogy. Why wasn’t The Force Awakens alone able to decide the fate of the franchise? The movie followed a similar plot line of the original trilogy. The followers of the Darkside had built a new Deathstar, this one bigger and better than the first, but in simplistic terms, still a massive space station designed to take over the universe. The Rebels were still in existence and a battle ensewed to destroy the Deathstar in hopes that good would prevail. Not to mention a Jedi comes into their powers and has to go find a fellow Jedi in order to be trained. Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia and Luke all made an appearance. It can be assumed the franchise used the familiar plot and characters to welcome viewers back, giving them a taste for what they remember while introducing what is to come. With the next Star Wars, fans will be looking for a new plot line and further development of the new characters. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was able to attract hoards of patrons willing to stand in long lines due to the high volume of interest in the original Star Wars series. The individuals who grew up watching Star Wars, now have children of their own interested in the new addition. Parents enjoy being able to share the movie going experience with the whole family and thus are more willing to attend familiar titles. In the case of The Force Awakens, the revival of a well-known and celebrated franchise has returned to the delight of the general populace and captured the attention of another generation. Other remakes will maintain the same plot line, but substituted actors and actresses. Oceans 11 underwent a character line up adjustment in the 2001 reboot and went on to produce two sequels. The original 1960 movie stared Frank Sinatra (Danny Ocean), Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., just to name a few. Sinatra, Martin and Davis were famous singers, each appearing separately and together in many movies. Their names were well known at the time. In the 2001 reboot, George Clooney was cast as Danny Ocean who gathered fellow thieves and con artists portrayed by actors such as Brad Pitt and Bernie Mac. The new main characters were some of the most recent heartthrobs of the movie industry.

Movie Minded

By 2001 the original 1960's Oceans 11 had fallen from general knowledge. This finessed style of movie had been replaced in the action world by others of its kind with more advanced theatrics and technologies. No longer brothers from military days, the group of men brought together for the 2001 reboot would showcase special skills of a different set. The purpose of such a reboot may seem like a lack of an original idea, but people still went to see the movie in theaters. The general populace had forgotten the original version making the idea seem fresh. If the audience doesn't like a movie, it will fall from memory and won't make money. For this reason there have been movies being revived in an effort to recreate interest. One such example is the movie Alfie. Originally released in 1966, Alfie was based on a stage play and offered many of the popular asides a stage character may complete. Michael Caine was cast as the character of Alfie who was portrayed as not having any care for the feelings of others, even going as far as to sleep with his friend's wife. The movie also focused on many social taboos of the time such as having children out of wedlock and going through an abortion. By the end the character of Alfie acted as if he may change his ways because he felt lonely. This wasn't exactly a feel good movie most are looking to enjoy. In 2004, the movie was remade with the actor Jude Law as Alfie and small changes to the plot were underwent. The character of Alfie was still a womanizer, but the asides were less insulting than in the 1966 version. Most of the women who were portrayed in the 2004 movie were given their own characters even though they only appeared on screen a couple of times. The social taboos that had been blatantly crossed in the 1966

movie were down played in the 2004 rendition. When Alfie slept with his friend's girlfriend instead of wife and when the woman ended up pregnant she refused to have the abortion. Alfie as a character was made more likable from the start, and while the movie did not soar in popularity, the ratings of the 2004 version were higher than the 1966 movie. Achieving the correct balance between an audience's happiness and a complete remake of a movie is a constant burden on any movie producer's mind. In any remake the question of what needs to be remade and what should stay the same is an important conversion. In the case of Star Trek, it was well known that the original cast and plot could not be easily replaced. Beginning as a popular television series, Star Trek had a healthy group of followers who’s numbers have continued to grow into the present day. Ten years after the final episode of the television series, the original cast starred in the first Star Trek movie, The Motion Picture in 1979. Arguably, these were the first movies and television series that really explored the possibility of other life forms and intergalactic travel. To say the least, the franchise captured the attention of many minds both young and old. When talk of a remake surfaced it was quickly realized that replacing the original cast would be difficult. The line between character and actor was not a distinction many fans were willing to acknowledge. Rather than fight a risky battle, the production staff decided to employ two defense mechanisms that would allow for a successful movie while hopefully appeasing original Star Trek fans. Instead of continuing the original Star Trek story line, producers began again with the idea of time travel. After an enemy

of Spock’s travels through time he kills Captain Kirk’s father while Kirk is still within his mother’s womb. This causes an entirely different life for Captain Kirk and allowed the movie industry a bit more wiggle room. The new time line of events made it easier for fans to accept the new actors and actresses within Star Trek, but as a bonus Leonard Nimoy plays a role in the movie. All in all, the Star Trek franchise was protected by using a theme that fit well with both the original television series and movies. The remake of Star Trek carried original fans into the present day with a new installment and pulled in new fans. Then there are more movies that are being created from popular television series as a conclusion and final farewell for fans. The science fiction series Firefly was put on television arguable before its time and only lasted one season. Rather than simply going off the air, the series completed their final send off in the form of the movie Serenity. While the movie may not have been the ending fans were looking for, it left them with a greater sense of finality than the final episode of a season. Is the movie industry out of original ideas? Perhaps, but there is no way to know. The remakes, reboots and revivals playing in theaters have been known to receive a good audience. In part this is due to the interest created by the original films and the actor and actresses employed. Audiences are more likely to see a movie that is associated with a fond memory than one they know nothing about, making the production of completely new works a higher risk to produce.

A Kid at Heart! Story & Photos by Beverly Kerr

A Sinclair gas delivery wagon from the 1930s greets people as they travel over the bridge in Dover, Ohio. It stands along the bank of the Tuscarawas River with many vintage gas signs on display. Everyone is sure to notice the Sinclair Brontosaurus atop American Gas Pump Heaven Museum.

Remembering the Good Times

Roger Ramsey, owner of the museum, began collecting gas pumps in the 1970s. This was an expansion of his car restoration hobby, as he thought it would be special to have 'one' gas pump. But as all collectors soon experience, something has to be done with what has accumulated. Roger decided to share his collection with everyone. As a teenager, Roger worked at a Bonded gas station in Freeport, Ohio, where he grew up. Men usually pulled up for $1.00 worth of gas and if it went over a few cents, no extra was charged. There he acquired a passion for gas memorabilia, while at his real job at Dover Credit Union he learned about finance. One goal is to always keep fifty gas pumps at the museum. With frequent selling or trading, there's always something new to experience. This is more than just a collection of gas pumps from 1910 to 1962; it's a collection of memories! Take a walk through gas station history, and a whole lot more. While there stop and play the 1920s Nickelodeon, which works at the drop of a quarter. Roger enjoys all the memorabilia he has collected. He's really a kid at heart as he listens to the crooning of Dean Martin or a talking parrot on the office desktop.

Top: Memories of Roy Rogers, his hero, appear throughout the museum.; Left: A replica of a Sohio Gas Station displays a Curbside Pump.; Right: Roger's desk is surrounded by fun memories of days gone by.

Flashing signs adorn most walls as he "loves neon signs." He definitely has fun collecting gas pumps and memories of those days gone by. "Roy Rogers is my hero," Roger explains while pointing out piece after piece inside the museum related to his hero. A life size picture of Roy clearly stands out among the gas pumps. The American Gas Pump Heaven Museum contains some favorite items that remind him and visitors of the happy days of their youth. Roger has a little bit of everything and can't think of anything that he really wants, but is always ready to make a deal on something that appeals to his fancy. Quite often he'd point out a recent purchase and say, "I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this." Roger prides himself on an Americana touch to exhibits. Everything from American flags to an American eagle and a scaled down model of the Statue of Liberty can be found throughout the displays. There's so much to see that one trip through will probably not be enough. Everyone has memories of a favorite gas station when they were growing up. Our small town had a gas station/ grocery store. There was only one pump but the Sinclair sign proudly displayed their signature dinosaur. Gas stations provided neighbors with much more than fuel for their cars. Here you met your neighbors and caught up on local news over a cup of coffee or two cent bottle of pop - Orange Whistle was a favorite of mine. You'll definitely be surprised by the variety of items you "Heart” continued on page 28

EXPLORING DRUM CIRCLES Roots to Rhythm Story & Photos by Beverly Kerr Drums! To many people the word means noise - loud noise. In truth, they set the background beat for most musical performances. But drums can also capture the rhythm of the mind, body and spirit through a little special training. Toni Kellar does just that. Her programs, Roots to Rhythm, teach students and adults to explore their body's rhythm through Drum Circles. Using percussion instruments and body movements, Toni helps others find their inner beat as their creativity is boosted. While Toni did play the snare drum in high school as a member of her marching band, it wasn't until later in life that she discovered hand-drumming. This opened new doors for her that she had never experienced before. The name Roots to Rhythm developed as Toni felt she was returning to her "roots" as she found a special way to share her love of "rhythm" with others. The metaphor of a tree explains her passion since the roots of the tree reach deep down for nourishment to provide food for the tree to branch out. Her Drum Circles provide that nourishment. Starting with everyone sitting in a circle, Toni begins a basic beat on her drum, encouraging everyone to find their beat through their hands. In just a little while, she begins passing out drums, shakers, wood blocks and tambourines to let others experience the percussion instruments. Some are reluctant to join the drumming at the beginning, but that soon changes. Soon there is a sparkle in their eyes and a smile on their face as they play a drum for the first time in their lives, and feel a different rhythm in their body. Adults feel young again as they do something new that perhaps feels a little silly...but is so much fun. Then it's time for everyone to select their own percussion instrument. What excitement to choose the piece that suits your mood. Toni starts a beat but encourages everyone to find their own beat even if it doesn't seem to match hers. Before

N&T • 30

long, the beats blend together perfectly. Then others are called to lead the beat and partners are selected across the room to match rhythms. Time flies by as the volume changes as well as the rhythm. Loud...then soft...loud... soft. Feel the relaxation setting in as the instruments reach a quiet level. Before the evening ended, there was a feeling of oneness as drumming not only connected participants to their personal rhythm, but had joined the inner rhythm of everyone in the group. One of Toni's most rewarding experiences was in an assisted living community where the residents danced, sang and encouraged each other to join in the drumming. This is what often happens in this setting. However, this time the residents were Alzheimer patients, and it was the first time they had reached out for that kind of interaction with each other. Group drumming not only has many health benefits, but it increases the closeness of people within a group. Roots to Rhythm provides programs for corporate and professional development, health and wellness, school and youth, as well as community groups. Professional training becomes a requirement for learning methodology to lead drum circles. Toni has completed several drum circle facilitator programs and continues enriching her life with Drumming and World Percussion workshops. Roots to Rhythm is not musical or spiritual, but directs everyone to express their inner rhythms. Some find relaxation, while others find it energizing - maybe even both at the same time! For more information regarding Roots to Rhythm, contact Toni at www.rootstorhythm.com. Contact Beverly Kerr at gypsybev@hotmail.com and visit her website at www.GypsyRoadTrip.com.

A new class is starting March 7th on Mondays from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM. Many older adults experience a fear of falling. Be smart about antibiotic use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report from the World Health Organization stated, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health.” The Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics says antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic has lost its ability

to effectively control or kill bacterial growth. The three main ways resistance develops include natural resistance to certain types of antibiotics, genetic mutation or through the acquisition of resistance from another bacterium. This resistance can occur spontaneously or through misuse of antibiotics or antimicrobials. Prescription medications are not always the culprits, either. Antibiotic use in livestock and food production also may contribute to resistance. When antibiotic resistance occurs, a stronger drug may be needed to treat an infection that was once taken care of by a milder medication. Prudent antibiotic use can help prevent the recurrence of resistance. Individuals can help the process in a number of ways. • Become educated. The health resource Medscape, powered by WebMD, says in a recent survey of 796 clinicians, 42 percent of doctors have admitted to prescribing antibiotics 10 to 24 percent of the time even when they are not sure they are necessary. Patient request is a large factor in such offerings. About 25 percent of patients ask their doctor or nurse for antibiotics. Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to request them, and that can help prevent the development of a resistance. • Confirm need. Only take antibiotics when a bacteria-, parasite- or fungus-based illness is identified. These illnesses may include strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. • Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viral-based illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. • Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

Business Meeting

Harry was working at a construction site when he came across a bottle. He popped it open and out came a Genie. "I gotta warn you," said the Genie. "I'm not that powerful but I'll try my best." "Well" said Harry, "I'm trying desperately to start a new business and I have a very important meeting tonight with a potential investor..." " I'll tell you what," said the Genie, "and this is the best I can do. I'll give you a one time good luck charm. To start it say, 123. When you're done, say 1234." And with that the Genie was gone in a puff of smoke. Harry couldn't believe his good luck. As he nervously tied his tie in front of the mirror, he kept on repeating over in his head 123, 123, 123. Harry nervously knocked on the rich man's office. "Come in," said the man in a deep imposing voice. OK, here goes nothing, thought Harry to himself as he sat down across from the man. Before he started he muttered to himself "123", suddenly he knew everything would be OK. He opened up his mouth to start speaking but before he could say anything the man behind the desk pleasantly asked, "What did you say 123, for?" -GreatCleanJokes.com

Social Media No Longer Just Child’s Play The Internet and related technologies have been a gamechanger for people of all ages. The instant connectivity made possible by these advancements has been valued by young adults and children for years. But now social media is attracting an entirely different demographic - seniors. More than just a method of channeling information to the comfort of home, the Internet and the various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, are ways for older adults to stay connected with friends and family. For seniors faced with mobility issues, social media helps to bring the world to them. Despite the stereotype that seniors do not want to learn to use new technology, many seniors are getting on board. Findings from the Pew Research Institute show that social networking use among Internet users ages 50 to 64 grew by 88 "Social” continued on page 40

percent between April 2009 and May 2010. The research also found that the percentage of those 65 and older using social media grew from 13 percent to 26 percent during that same stretch. Although young adults continue to be the primary users of social media, older users are gaining momentum and surpassing youth in the number of new users. Individuals who are not yet utilizing social media to manage their communication efforts may be inspired by these benefits to doing so. * Photo and video sharing: The majority of photos being taken today are digital, as fewer people are making prints of their photos. Rather, they are being shared via e-mail or through social media sites. Grandparents can see their grandchildren in photos in real time. Also, if they’ve managed apps that enable video sharing, they can view and chat with relatives who live miles away, just as if they were sitting across the table. * Conversations with family: In a world where families are no longer centrally located, communication may be lacking. Despite the prevalence of mobile phones, fewer and fewer people seem to pick up the phone and make calls as they once did. Instead, they’re texting and updating social media posts. They’re also e-mailing one another. Older adults who have no access to this technology could be left out of the mix. This is a way for seniors to stay close to family. * Convenient check-ins: At times when a full-blown conversation may not be practical, having a quick method to check in with a loved one can make social media advantageous. Men and women can send a quick text to their parents to find out how they’re feeling or if they need anything. Such ready access can provide some peace of mind to adults concerned about their elderly parents. * Online shopping: Seniors who don’t get out much or who cannot safely drive a vehicle might not be able to shop as often as they would like. Having Internet access and experience with browsing Web sites enables older men and women to shop from reputable Web sites who ship items directly to the house. With the vast array of items now sold online, anyone can have their choice of items and not be forced to settle because of their age. * Improved feelings of well-being: Avoiding feelings of isolation and loneliness can benefit older men and women. A study by Dr. Shelia Cotten, a sociologist and associate professor from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, revealed that Internet use was associated with a 30 percent decrease in depressive symptoms among older adults who used it regularly, while other studies have shown similarly impressive results. * Working the mind: Going online, chatting on social media or simply writing an e-mail works areas of the brain. Typing also helps improve manual dexterity. These factors can be beneficial for seniors looking to stay sharp. Using the Internet as a form of communication is a growing trend among the 50-plus demographic. It enables them to stay connected with family and the world in a variety of ways.

The TRUTH: It may not lead you to where you thought you were going, but it will always lead you somewhere better. When ignored, it will eventually show itself. The closeness of your relationships is directly proportional to the degree to which you have revealed the truth about yourself. - Source Unknown
