STAFF PICK
Inside-Out BLTs
F
ew sandwiches are more widely enjoyed than BLTs. When hosting parties, hosts often look for foods that will appeal to their guests, which makes BLTs a great appetizer option. Those hosts who want to take a chance on a less traditional “BLT” might want to consider the following recipe for “Inside-Out BLTs” from Bob Blumer’s “Surreal Gourmet Bites” (Chronicle Books). Unlike traditional BLTs, this recipe includes cheese and some additional unique properties guests are sure to love. Here is what you will need:
Remove from pan and drain on paper towels. Add more oil if necessary for subsequent batches. To assemble, line up 12 fried tomato slices. Season with salt and pepper, then top each with 1 cheese slice, a mound of bacon shrapnel and 2 arugula leaves. Cover with a second fried tomato slice. Secure with a toothpick. Let cool for a minute before serving. (Tomatoes have a surprising ability to hold the heat.)
Cook bacon over medium heat until crispy. Drain on a paper towel. Select the 24 most uniform tomato slices and save the rest for tomorrow’s lunch. Dredge slices in flour, then in eggs, then pat down in bread crumbs. Reserve on plates, but do not stack. In a sauté pan over medium-high heat, add 3 tablespoons oil. When oil is hot, add as many breaded tomato slices as the pan can accommodate without them touching. Fry for approximately 2 minutes per side, or until browned and crispy.

Some Surprising Health Benefits of Caffeine

hat new coffee bar opened up just around the corner and you have been eager to sample one of their signature blends. But you consistently resist the urge to venture inside. Caffeine is not so healthy for you, right? Caffeine, the most widely consumed stimulant on the planet, has garnered a bad reputation. Some

people fear caffeine and it’s potentially jittery and addictive side effects. However, many medical professionals attest that, when consumed in moderation, caffeine actually can have a number of health benefits. Before you skip that morning cup of Joe or choose an herbal blend instead of black tea, consider the following health benefits of caffeine. Caffeine boosts brain and central nervous system function. Caffeine mimics the shape of another compound in the body called adenosine, which helps the body calm down and become sleepy. Caffeine can fit in adenosine receptors and cause a jolt of energy rather than sleepiness. Harvard researchers have found that blocking adenosine may slow the buildup of a toxic brain plaque that is associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, caffeine may help keep dopamine molecules active in the brain and prevent the onset of Parkinson’s disease. An improved mood. The stimulant effect of caffeine may help boost people’s moods, and thus reduce the propensity for suicidal thoughts. In 2013, Harvard’s School of Public Health found that respondents who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day cut their suicide risk by 45 percent. Lower risk of stroke. Studies conducted in both the United States and Sweden found that older women who drink more than a cup of caffeinated coffee each day have between a 20 and 25 percent lower risk of stroke. Similar findings were discovered in older men. Caffeine boosts memory. Studies from Johns Hopkins University showed that a 200mg caffeine pill helped boost memory consolidation.

Caffeine offers pain relief. Caffeine is often paired with other pain relievers to bring about faster relief. The Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that when caffeine was combined with other pain relievers, patients required 40 percent less of the other drug to bring the same amount of relief experienced when using just the non-caffeine drug alone. Caffeine on its own can also relieve pain. Consuming caffeine before or after a workout can help reduce muscle soreness. Caffeine may help to prevent cancer. A recent study from Rutgers University pointed out that caffeine prevented skin cancer in hairless mice. Caffeine could open up air passages. People with asthma may ďŹ nd caffeine can improve their breathing. A study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine determined that caffeine seems to open airways and help asthmatics breathe easier, providing a similar beneďŹ t to theophylline, a current asthma medication. Although caffeine can prove beneďŹ cial in various ways, individuals should realize that it remains a potent and potentially addictive stimulant. Caffeine also can aggravate anxiety symptoms and interact with certain medications. People concerned about caffeine should discuss their caffeine consumption with their physicians.

Ladies Packing Heat Without Sacrificing Style
Story by KATE MINNICH HERSIDE WRITER & DESIGNER
L
adies Packing Heat. The name explains it all: women who refuse to sacrifice their feminism, choosing to carry firearms. Samantha Zeigler started Ladies Packing Heat two years ago with the goal of providing women the opportunity to carry a concealed weapon without sacrificing their style. Wanting to get away from the common conception of only hard, masculine woman carrying guns, Samantha began producing her own line of purses and bags with a special compartment for a concealed firearm. Samantha grew up around guns in part due to her father’s occupation in the military. Before Samantha was five years old she was attending shooting competitions with her parents. “I was always that little girl with the big headphones trailing after her parents,” says Samantha. Both her mother and father took part in the competitions, leaving no doubt in Samantha’s mind to her own capabilities. When she was deemed capable of handling a gun, Samantha’s father would take her out to the gun range, encouraging her to try different types of firearms. When Samantha decided to carry a concealed weapon the hunt began for an

appropriate bag. Searching everywhere, Samantha and her mother could only find one style of purse. Every one seemed to be crafted out of leather and most were not made in United States. There were slight variations in color, providing a choice of black or brown and of course the heavily rhinestone embedded bag was also present, but none of these represented the style Samantha or her mother wished to convey. At the time Samantha had begun to collect Vera Bradley bags and wanted a similar style of purse to carry her firearm. Thus Ladies Packing Heat was born. Samantha began experimenting with different designs and fabrics in order to create a bag for an everyday woman. She began to notice that the common image of a woman carrying a gun was the tom-boy persona of a gun slinging outdoorsy type. This image is not an accurate representation of the women choosing to conceal carry. Several of the women who carry a gun love to dress up, let their hair down and enjoy being a woman. Working against the stereotype, Samantha began to choose colorful fabrics in a variety of designs. The type of fabric chosen to compose each bag had to be strong enough to safely

carry a firearm. An extremely flexible fabric or one containing a large percentage of spandex was not able to maintain the shape and stability Samantha was aiming toward. Therefore it was decided that the fabric should be mostly cotton based and further supported by interfacing sewn into the structure of the purse. Consulting with her parents, Samantha decided on a true center compartment for the firearm. The center compartment is accessible through a side zipper, the only one in the entire purse. In an extremely stressful situation, our minds tend to forget half of what they know; all that has to be remembered is zipper and gun. The largest amount of security for the weapon is provided through this center pocket because it distributes the pressure from other items more evenly upon the firearm. Relying on the talent of a neighboring Amish woman, Samantha saw her first bag constructed. Samantha knew from the beginning she would have to find a partner to complete the actual construction of the purses, but she wanted to commit to a locally crafted brand. Through her partnership with a neighbor, Samantha is able to boast the homemade quality of her beautifully crafted bags. Once the concept of the bags was finalized, different sizes and styles were created. The first bag was fairly simple and very roomy, now the bags range in size from a diaper bag to a small travel bag. Each bag is crafted with minimal pockets and compartments in order to limit the amount of items that can apply pressure to the concealed firearm. Every bag is sold with a holster that will fit most gun sizes and attaches to the inside compartment with Velcro. Ladies Packing Heat promotes style and confidence while carrying a concealed weapon, but Samantha stresses security for the weapon and the

An active member in her community, Samantha donates a couple purses to organizations such as the Wounded Warriors and Women in the Outdoors. Women in the Outdoors offer a program focused on gaining valuable in-the-field skills to women who are fourteen and older. The program is for women who wish to learn outdoor skills such as fishing, botany, canoeing and archery. “If you have a good cause, I would love to donate a bag,” says Samantha.

handler. Working alongside SlyTac Training Concepts, Samantha includes a one-hour training certificate with every purchased handbag. The training received to obtain a concealed carry license does not make the participant an expert. Samantha recognizes the difference between shooting a stationary target and fighting for your life with a weapon. For this reason Samantha recommends a class on how to properly draw a firearm from the purchased bag, an action that is not covered in any license class. Other class opportunities include how to protect your family, how to move through your home with an intruder, how to handle a car jacking and more. The certificate obtained through your Ladies Packing Heat purchase can be used for any SlyTac Training Concepts one-hour session.

Ladies Packing Heat is constantly growing and adding new merchandise. As the business has aged it has evolved from a simple bag to diaper bags and the trend is continuing. One of Samantha’s next projects is to create a fanny pack type item that can carry a concealed firearm. The fanny pack would allow walkers, hunters and hikers to move without being hampered by a swinging bag while also being capable of protecting themselves. Samantha is always open to new ideas and finding a way to allow everyone to feel safe and secure no matter the setting. Customization is not usually available through Ladies Packing Heat, but for special circumstances, Samantha is willing to work with a customer. One woman approached Samantha and asked after a special compartment being added for an epi-pen. The woman’s daughter had a severe allergy and the injector had to be on the mother at all times, but it also had to be carried a particular way. Samantha designed a protective pocket for the epi-pen, thus creating a specialized product. Samantha Zeigler began Ladies Packing Heat because she wanted to provide women with a feminine bag to carry their concealed weapon. Each
bag is hand crafted by Samantha and a local Amish woman. Samantha designs each bag, chooses the fabrics, cuts each piece to the appropriate size, and irons the fabric. Then the fabric pieces are passed off to be hand stitched before it is made available for your concealed carry needs. Welcome to the Bridal Showcase! he Hollywood story of the boy next door is something every young girl can remember. Karen Poultney was lucky enough to see that fantasy fulfilled within her own life. After a series of disheartening events, Karen met Charley and now after being together for eight years, the couple has set a date to tie the knot. As a single working mother, Karen was skeptical about finding a man who would complement her life. Karen is dedicated to her position in the nursing field, but is constantly involved in life and death situations. Regardless of the turmoil at work, Karen is always careful to put the needs of her children first. When Karen met Charley through an encounter in their apartment building, she began to soften to the idea of finding a healthy lasting relationship. In the beginning Karen remained a bit guarded due to Charley’s limited life experiences, but it soon became apparent he possessed an old soul. Karen’s sense of duty and respect for human life has not saved her from her own share of heartache, but Charley has stabilized and perfected her life. The couple has planed their wedding for May 13, 2017 and while the planning is still in the early stages there are a few details upon which Karen is definitive. The most unique feature Karen is incorporating into her wedding is a red bridal gown. “I wear white all day, everyday,” says Karen “red fits me, fits us.” Karen went on to explain that red is Charley’s favorite color and when she began to research the meaning behind red she found it symbolizes success, passion and energy, all key components of their relationship. As you are planning your wedding, advice will be freely given to you from multiple sources, but the most important aspect to remember is the relationship you have forged with your fiancé. Incorporating small details into your wedding that represent this relationship will ensure the day reflects your style and will remain a special memory to be cherished through the years. Stay tuned for updates on our featured bride, Karen.

Planning a Wedding? Focus on Your Guests Story by Kenneth Bogucki THE WOOSTER INN
ver my many years in the restaurant and event business, I have had a front row seat to the explosion in businesses that surround weddings. Colleges are churning out professional event planners; websites and apps provide ideas and photos that inspire; florists, bakers, venues, rental companies, and caterers (like us) are all vying for your attention, priority, and ultimately your dollars. So how does one decide what is important? Perhaps the best way to view your wedding reception is to boil it down to the simplest level: it is a celebration with family and friends. You likely have had these gatherings before. So what is important when you invite family and friends to your home? You want them to feel welcome. You want them to enjoy food and drink. You invite the number of people that you can reasonably handle. You spend your time cleaning and perhaps hours of preparation cooking for those guests. The undeniable focus of the gathering are the guests. A wedding reception is an amplified gathering of family and friends and, even though it is a couple’s special day, it is still about the guests. These are the people who are important to you. These are the folks that are expected to bestow a gift. These are the people who make the effort to join you on

the day of celebration. So how do you celebrate in consideration of your guests? Nearly every wedding and reception starts with a budget. Part of that will be absolutely dedicated to the needs and wants of the couple. After those initial needs and wants are satisfied, consider dedicating the rest of the budget to the guest experience. I would argue that while a venue, flowers and additional décor contribute to the initial impression experienced by the guests, the foods you offer, the beverages you serve, and the entertainment you provide will be the memory that lasts. With your budget in mind, work to create the best guest experience possible. When you think back on previous events you’ve atteneded, ask yourself: do you remember the centerpiece? How about the napkin color? The chairs? Usually people remember what they were served and how they were served. After all these years, I know plenty of florists and vendors who do great work. In the end, consider prioritizing your dollars around your treasured guests. It is your special day but know that when you invite fifty or more people to what amounts to a party, the event will take on a life of its own. Consequently, be flexible. Prioritize your focus. Determine what is most important for you and your guests. Despite what all your vendors will tell you, not every facet of an event is equal in its importance. Ultimately you are in charge of spending wisely while creating y a wonderful experience for everyone.

The Flowers hen planning their weddings, couples may find themselves becoming experts on subjects they previously never gave much thought. Thanks to the cost of weddings, today’s couples must make each decision carefully, and that may result in hours of research and discussion. One of the big decisions a couple must make when planning their wedding concerns their floral arrangements. The right floral arrangements

won’t break the bank but will add substantial aesthetic appeal to ceremonies and receptions. It can be difficult for couples to achieve that balance of cost and look on their own, so the following are a few helpful hints for couples when choosing their wedding day floral arrangements. An experienced florist can guide a couple decisions, taking into account the budget be it small or unlimited. If you are watching your pennies, an extravagant look can still be achieved by keeping a few helpful hints in mind. Couples working with tight budgets may want to choose in-season flowers or those native to the area where they will be tying the knot. Such flowers won’t need to be ordered or shipped in from afar, which can be costly. In-season and native flowers tend to be more abundant as well, and the greater their availability the less couples are likely to pay for them. Some flowers bloom larger than others, and choosing such flowers may help you save money since you won’t need to buy as many flowers as you would if you were to go with smaller blooms. Once you find a florist to work with, discuss your options in regard to doing more with less. Many florists embrace the challenge to be creative within a budget; you might be surprised and impressed by what they come up with. Floral arrangements can set the mood for a wedding ceremony and reception. Choosing a flower significant to your relationship will add a personalized touch to any wedding. Karen, our featured bride, has always enjoyed the look of a rose and the symbolism of love paired with the blooming beauties warms the heart. It can be assured that when Karen and Charley say their I do’s the roses present will be a reminder of the love they share for one another and their family.

eyes, some tricks of the trade are best left to the pros. Don’t forget to schedule a trial run. Make this appointment several months before the wedding day so you have ample time to work with your stylists and experiment with colors and hair styles to fit your personality, complement your gown and overall feel of your wedding. Be sure to take a veil, headpiece, hair extensions, and any other accessories to your hair consult. This enables the stylist to practice incorporating these items. Allot enough time for the wedding day beauty appointment. If you will be going to a salon, block out two or more slots instead of one. This way the stylist does not overbook and will not feel rushed. Many brides opt to have stylists come to their homes. There may be an extra charge for this service, but it may be well worth the cost. Making drastic changes to your appearance right before the wedding is not advised. This includes changing your hair color or texture, extreme tanning, using colored contact lenses, or chopping off all of your hair. It’s better to wait until after the wedding to change your style. Being comfortable with your appearance the day of your wedding should be foremost in the mind. Agreeing to a hairstyle or make-up application that you don’t like may make you feel uncomfortable all day. Some women, such as our featured bride Karen, do not like their hair pulled completely away from the face and may be most comfortable in a different hairstyle. Wearing a little extra makeup than you are accustomed to wearing will show up better in photos. However, do not wear so much that you look clownish. Chances are more photographs will be taken of a newlywed couple than at any other moment in their lives. Certain beauty dos and don’ts should be followed so couples put their best faces forward.

to flatware inevitable adds both to the bottom line and the logistical complexity of the event. Outdoor banquet areas or locations with a patio have advantages as well as disadvantages. While an outdoor area may provide a scenic view it may be disrupted by unpredictable weather. As Karen, our feature bride, begins to compare locations she is leery of outdoor spaces and how they will affect her appearance and the guests’ overall comfort. The reception is where couples can expect to spend most of their time on their wedding day, so couples should exercise their due diligence to ensure they find an inviting and festive facility.

ouples must consider a variety of factors when looking for the right venue to host their reception. The celebration is where the couple and their guests will let their hair down and hopefully enjoy a festive and memorable night. It’s important to find a place where everyone can be comfortable and enjoy themselves. Word-of-mouth is a great way to find the right banquet hall, ask friends or family members if they can recommend a reception site. These friends or family members can provide a behind-the-scenes look, from how accommodating the staff was to the flexibility of the venue in regards to pricing and how open the staff were to suggestions. Consider the size of the facility. Some couples prefer an intimate affair with relatively few guests, while others will desire a large wedding party with lots of guests. If your wedding party is small, then avoid a larger facility that will appear empty. If the party is large, make sure there’s adequate room so guests won’t feel like they’re sitting on top of one another during dinner and dessert. A venue with an attractive decor is not only aesthetically pleasing but can be appeal financially as well. Such a hall won’t need many additional decorations, while a venue that’s unadorned and lacks embellishments will, and those decorations can dip into the overall wedding budget. In the recent year more unique venues seem to be the de rigueur. However couples considering rustic or untraditional locations should consider the impact this decision may have on guests, other vendor and the overall budget. While you may have found a location that sets you apart from every other wedding in town, caterers that require access to electricity and water may need to make special arrangements at your location, guests may struggle with mobility on uneven surfaces or be turned off by portable bathroom facilities, and the need to rent or supply everything from tables and chairs

wedding party and guests throughout the day. The way a photographer communicates with you about your wishes is very important, as this is when to discuss specific shots you want taken during the day. In addition, this is a great time for the photographer to get familiar with a venue’s rules. Choose a photographer who is confident and firm. A good photographer will be able to direct photo subjects and get everyone to participate. Brides and grooms likely won’t want to handle such tasks on their own, so an assertive, yet cordial photographer can be an invaluable asset. Discuss a backup plan with the photographer. Mishaps happen, even on the most carefully planned wedding day. Discuss what the photographer does to safeguard your digital photo files. Does the photographer bring along a second camera in case the primary one has a malfunction? What happens if he or she is ill on the day of the wedding? Understanding how the photographer adapts to unforeseen situations can make you feel more confident in choosing a photographer. Consider hiring a photographer’s assistant or second shooter. The photographer is less likely to miss a shot or fail to capture various perspectives of the wedding if he or she works with a partner. Know what each package includes. The photographer should clearly spell out which items and services are included as part of the contract. The popularity of videography continues as a way to capture the day and may be available through your photography package. The wedding couple often miss little details at their reception, but with video the memories can be relived and treasured. A professional photographer will work with you to identify how you want to remember your wedding day providing an enduring tribute to your special day.

create a free-flow of guests to the buffet stations, there will be a first and a last table called to eat. Guests on the tail end of the service may be stuck with whatever is left if food is not adequately ordered. Extra food may be cooked for buffet-style dinners, but can be costly and wasteful. nce a couple has officially tied the knot, a celebration typically follows. The meal is often the central party component. Buffet service and a sit-down dinner are the most popular choices for meals, but which one fits your needs the best? Choosing the optimal dinner service will involve a careful comparison of the various offerings, your budget and guests’ comfort. A sit-down dinner consists of several courses of plated food served by a waitstaff. Guests never have to leave their seats, and sitdown service is usually in line with a formal reception. There are several advantages to sit-down meals. Guests can focus entirely on enjoying themselves and conversing with fellow guests. Those with mobility issues do not have to worry about maneuvering to a buffet station or trying to balance food. But sit-down dinners are typically more expensive as well. Guests are generally given several choices for the main course, and that could mean ordering extra food and preparing it to be ready for guests’ selections. Serving meals may take longer, and sometimes meals may not arrive hot to the table. A buffet-style dinner is served from a long dais table that holds several chafing dishes full of food. Wedding guests will be able to serve themselves or be served by catering staff. Those at the reception can sample several different foods rather than be restricted to one main course. Guests can limit portion sizes or return for second helpings. Buffets are generally less formal and allow guests to mingle more readily. While experienced catering managers and reception site staff have plans in place to

ho does not remember the 1991 Academy Award nominated crime movie Thelma & Louise about two girlfriends out for an adventure! Twenty-four years later, it still sparks conversation when women talk about traveling together. Today women hit the open road, the high seas and cross the oceans with just as much excitement and without a worry in the world. According to a survey administered via Google Consumer Surveys this past June, about 4 in 10 Americans did not use any of their vacation days in 2014. The survey also found women took fewer

IT’S A GIRLFRIEND THING! Locally a group of 14 girlfriends embarked on their forth cruise together this past January. Their first trip in 2010 consisted of eight neighboring friends and four women connected by the travel agent. The second trip brought 16 area girlfriends together. One of the first things they pack – The Daily Record! “We had so much fun on the first trip, we started planning the next one as soon as we got home,” said Dee Nelson of Orrville. “I look forward to getting on the ship together and our dinners in the main dining room.” Nelson is a seasoned traveler and a Royal Caribbean Diamond Member. Cruising with a large group of women works because not everyone is interested in the same things but you can always find a partner according to Nelson. “We may separate during the day but dinner brings us back to share the day’s stories and adventures,” she said with a smile. “We laugh about things that guys would never think are funny,” said Trish Barille of Wooster. “It’s a whole different atmosphere, a girlfriend thing! I do not have sisters or daughters, just sons so I love the break from the men. We have some great adventure stories!” One of those stories included hiring a local driver not sanctioned by the cruise line to take them to an island off the beaten track. The group of women piled into a yellow school bus joking all the way about what their mother’s would say. The bus trip ended at a beautiful, remote island with swings for bar stools and a private tour of a quaint beachfront inn owned by an American woman.
There are some nuances when traveling with all women according to Kathi Bond of Wooster. “I pack more dressy clothes and I’m more careful in choosing clothes when traveling with all women,” said Bond. “Women tend to be more critical of what you are wearing.” She added the tradeoff is worth it! According to Bond, when women travel with their husbands, they always put him firstwhat does he want to do-is he having a good time. Traveling with just women, we put ourselves first. Women-only traveling is solid business according to Lucy Ewing, Leisure Consultant with VIP Travell of Wooster. Over her 23 3 years in the business, she e has seen the trips evolvee from short, co-worker,, stress-release trips to longerr vacations centered on n exploring new places. Ewing g sees everything from multi-generational family women n enjoying hot weather beach h time to mother-daughterr excursions to Greece, Rome e and London. “Women are caregivers and we look after everyone all the time,” said Ewing. “When you travel with girlfriends you take care and nurture each other. It’s a nice break and a good feeling.” Most women agree traveling with all females is definitely different. While they enjoy vacations with their family and significant others, a group of girlfriends – well they just can’t put their finger on why it’s so great.
explanation. “Our brains are wired to crave novelty and when we vacation with ladies we are doing different things, things our husbands may not like to do,” said Hoffman. “We are pulled to girlfriends who share our interests. It gives us the opportunity to explore different parts of our personalities.” She added when women travel together they are more independent, more creative and more adventurous than when on a family vacation. Hoffman echoed the sentiments of other women on being free from the caregiver position. She also spoke to the importance of reconnecting to oneself and finding a balance. She speaks from experience. Hoffman has traveled with the local group of women on three cruises and with other girlfriends on various outdoor retreats. She also enjoys solo trips. “When I turned 40 I started taking a birthday retreat to state parks leaving on Thursday and returning Sunday,” said Hoffman. “I protect that time. It is important for a sense of balance and reconnection to self.” There are numerous agencies catering to women traveling together. Most feature international travel, river cruises, guided vacations and safaris. All boast of personal attention, quaint inns and spas, safety and lots of free time to explore and shop. ways for cost-conscious homeowners to improve their properties without breaking the bank. Put your green thumb to use. A well-maintained landscape can dramatically improve a home’s curb appeal. Pay attention to the plants, shrubs and trees throughout your property, watering them during periods of little rainfall and trimming them when necessary so your lawn does not look like an overgrown, neglected suburban jungle. Professional landscaping services can help you maintain your property, but even if your budget does not allow for such an expense, you can still make sure your landscape adds to your home’s appeal by keeping a watchful eye on the property and addressing any issues that arise. Maintain your lawn through the colder months of the year as well, making sure no one walks on the grass when frost has settled, as doing so can produce dead spots throughout the lawn. Redo your front door. While their eyes may initially be drawn to a well-manicured lawn, prospective buyers will eventually find their way to the front door. If your door is especially old, consider replacing it. If your budget does not allow for such an expense, you can still give your home’s front entrance an entirely new look by installing some inexpensive molding around the door before giving the door a fresh coat of paint. Molding around the front door can make an entrance more

impressive, while a new coat of paint can make a home feel warmer and more vibrant. Plant flowers. Another inexpensive way to make a home more appealing is to plant some colorful flowers around the property. Line walkways with flowers native to your region, as such plants will last longer than exotic alternatives that may not be capable of adapting to the local climate. In addition to lining walkways, hang window boxes filled with colorful flowers or plants outside naked windows. Doing so can make windows seem larger and add some color to your home’s exterior. Another creative way to make use of colorful flowers is to place a few planters at the foot of your driveway and painting the numbers of your address on the planters. This can be both effortless and inexpensive, but it can instantly make a home more inviting to prospective buyers. Spotlight certain parts of your property. Many homeowners focus on improving the curb appeal of their property during the daytime hours, but you can take steps to make a home more appealing at night as well. Solar spotlights placed around trees and other attractive features in your yard can shed light on those areas of your property you’re most proud of, even after the sun has gone down. Solar spotlights won’t add to your energy bill, as they are powered by the sun, and they can make certain

ets are so loyal and so low-maintenance that it’s easy to forget how fragile and mortal even the strongest pets can be. Just ask the conscientious Rottweiler owner who walks her dog daily, feeds him the right food, treats him with care and kindness, and wakes up one day to find a sluggish 8-year-old companion whom subsequent tests detect is suffering from cancer. She’s now faced with the prospect of amputating his leg before the cancer spreads to more vital parts of his body. It’s an awful proposal to consider. Pets and their popularity have grown from the backyard to the bedroom. But caring for a pet with the growing costs of healthcare can be daunting. The dreaded question so many pet owners ask after being told the total amount of their veterinary bill… “Can I make payments?” At my office we hear this all the time and up until now the answer was no. There is a new concept in veterinary preventative
medicine that is beginning to grow in popularity across the United States, Pet Wellness Plans. Unlike insurance plans that require payment for coverage that may never get used, wellness plans provide the necessary preventative healthcare services when needed. Each plan is usually affordably priced and the cost is conveniently divided over a 12 month period...thus allowing the pets owner to ‘make payments’ for the cost of the care. The whole concept of wellness plans evolved approximately eight years ago when the economy slowed. Bayer Pharmaceuticals commissioned a very large, and thorough study to look at declining patient visits to a veterinarian. The results of the study found that pet owners would take their pet to the veterinarian more often if they felt it would allow the pet to live longer, avoid costly emergency care later in life or the costs could be discounted and spread out over a period

Pricing of wellness plans vary by plan design. In our area plans range from $19.95 per month for a basic plan on a cat, up to $54.95 for a premium plan for a senior dog. Most practices also charge an enrollment fee to enter a pet in the plan, but the cost of the enrollment fee is recouped with the savings within the first year. It’s also important to remember the enrollment fee is for the life of the pet, not per year. If your pet is coming due for a costly dental cleaning or annual vaccination appointment and the thought of budgeting for the cost prevents you from getting your pet the best care possible, consider a wellness plan. Affordable monthly payments, discounted services and medications, free nail trims, and more frequent healthcare than you previously could afford will help to give your pet a longer healthier life. Your 4-legged friend will thank you for it. of time. Pet wellness plans do just that! Two large corporate veterinary hospitals, with offices all over the US, immediately began offering such plans and they have met with tremendous success, for the vet and for the pet. And now many private small animal veterinarians like myself are able to offer similar plans. Services offered in a plan are at the discretion of the practice. Ideally basic plans should allow at least one or more full wellness examinations, all recommended vaccinations, diagnostics appropriate to the age and lifestyle of the pet, and parasite screening. Premium plans, while offering services similar to a basic plan, may also include a thorough dental cleaning and polishing, spay or neuter, microchips for puppies and kittens, and additional diagnostic screenings for adult and senior animals. In addition, most plans allow the pet owner additional benefits within the practice that nonplan members do not enjoy, such as unlimited ‘sick’ visits without the cost of office fees, unlimited free nail trims and discounts on certain preventive medications.
