The Atonement

Book Review

by Beverly Lewis Reviewed by Amanda Nixon • AMISH HEARTLAND CONTRIBUTOR

In this stand alone story, Lewis blends a great mix of characters involving Englishers and Amish! In “The Atonement,” Lucy Flaud, a twenty-five year old Amish girl, past her courting age, sets the scene as a determined character with a huge heart. Do not be mistaken by her last name, Lewis does a great job describing her main heroine in this tale of a flawed amish woman. Lucy has a past, one that she would like to forget. She spends her days volunteering, working and encouraging others as a way to atone for her past transgressions. With minimum free time, Lucy still feels that she is not doing enough. Will she ever be acceptable in the eyes of God again? Meanwhile, an Englisher, Dale, has befriended Lucy’s dad. He is searching for knowledge on living a more common life, perhaps “off the grid.” Dale and Lucy form a unique friendship that pushes the bounds of Lucy’s Amish upbringing. He is not alone, Tobe Glick, a childhood Amish friend is also pursuing a strong friendship with Lucy. With the possibility of Dale and Tobe expressing interest in her, Lucy must decide what her future holds. In her attempt to to be perfect to atone for

her past, she learns a heart felt lesson: Sometimes you do not need to be perfect for God to be able to use you to help others. I enjoyed reading this book! Beverly Lewis always does a great job describing her characters...Lucy has become so lifelike and relatable, one cannot help but pursue her story.

The Parsley Pot Story & Photos by KATE MINNICH AMISH HEARTLAND WRITER / DESIGNER

n an old bank barn just outside the city of Ashland lies The Parsley Pot, a refreshingly unique store carrying a variety of items from herbs to home dĂŠcor. The building attributes emphasize the character of the store from the hand-hewn beams to the agricultural tools proudly displayed on the walls. Walking through The Parsley Pot, visitors can get a sense of how the items will coordinate with each other and enhance a room through the beautiful displays.

Don and Sally Dilgard opened The Parsley Pot 41 years ago this coming September. Taking the time to talk to each customer, Don and Sally have taken care to create an environment focused on those entering the store. Depending on the season, a variety of herbs are available through The Parsley Pot. “When we opened and started selling herbs, we were the only business in the area doing so,” says Sally. Taking the time to package the herbs themselves, Sally and Don ensure the quality of the product they offer. Samples of different dips greet customers as they walk through the barn door, allowing a taste of what a customer can expect to find. A selection of

seasonings ranging from saltine cracker to elephant ear, cheese ball and soup mixes have become a popular sell among the patron’s of The Parsley Pot. Artfully placed displays spread throughout the barn incorporate various home décor items. “I only purchase things I would put in my own house,” says Sally. Everything from wall hangings to plate settings may be found at The Parsley Pot, each thoughtfully placed to spark the imagination. Wandering through the main floor and two lofts, a visitor is sure to find unique knickknacks and home décor items for every home, no matter the style. Many items within The Parsley Pot offer practical solutions to common household conundrums. The lids for tuberware containers always find a way to disappear, leaving the owners high and dry when trying to store leftover food. The Parsley Pot carries an extensive line of silicon lids designed to form a suction on any container thus maintaining the freshness of the food. Available in multiple patterns, such as sunflower heads, and sizes the lids are

capable of covering any size dish from a circular cake pan to a large rectangular casserole dish. Wreaths that adorn the walls of The Parsley Pot can be found in various stages of completion. Well aware of the popularity surrounding DIY projects, Sally is sure to keep unfinished wreaths in stock as well as items to finish their decoration. A wall of ribbons provide customers with a large selection of colors and patterns including the currently popular burlap material. An in-house designer is available through The Parsley Pot for those customers who do not wish to complete their own wreaths. Customers may come in with ideas for the wreath either from their own imagination or pictures they have seen elsewhere. Paint samples may also be brought in if a match between the wreath and wall colors are preferred. The Parsley

Pot is more than willing to modify an existing wreath whether it was purchased through their store or from another location. The items at The Parsley Pot change with the season and current trends. Each holiday, such as Mother’s Day, brings about a new round of displays and themed items. With the recent popularity of bees, The Parsley Pot is currently carrying a line of dishes, décor items and honey sticks inspired by the creatures. Repeat visits to The Parsley Pot are never wasted between the volume of intriguing items and the new pieces on display. Visit The Parsley Pot for a unique selection of home décor and herbs at 697 C.R. 1302, just east of Ashland. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. for more information call 419-281-7514.

he Amish are often perceived of as “frozen in time. The modern day embodiment of the Little House on the Prairie story where Pa and Ma run their small family in isolation, struggling with nature in a strange and foreign world. A sub-culture that is insulated and isolated from any connections to modernity. Many visitors to Amish country discover, when they really become acquainted with an Amish person or family that the Amish are very much in touch with the realities of our world today. Misconceptions about anyone are furthered when we do not understand their culture, history and place in the modern world. The Amish care deeply that people outside their world work at understanding them. Their wonderful furniture and crafts, good food, and beautiful houses and farmsteads are important and valuable contributions to our world. But they have an even greater contribution to offer if we are willing to hear their story. The misconceptions about the Amish are primarily perpetuated by two “voices that one must understand to understand the Amish. The first such voice is the modern media’s attempts at sensationalism in their portrayal of the Amish. From romance novels (there are some good ones) to reality shows, the Amish are often portrayed in ways that in no way reflect their present world and beliefs. Amish life and culture is susceptible to this for two primary reasons; first, they do not engage with modern media or have access to the end result of that and therefore corrections to their portrayal is often post production. The second is that sensationalism sells ratings. Any subculture within a larger culture, because they are “different, is susceptible to these kind of misconceptions.

The second factor, or voice, is the way the Amish make decisions as a sub-culture. Their teaching that humility and piety are the most important personal traits to foster, and that individuals bow to the group voice, is much opposed to the individualism and independence in that is prominent in the western world. They are taught, and most Amish feel deeply, that in yielding to the collective memories, beliefs, and ideals of the community is where strength is found. Therefore, discernment about how to live in the present world is found in the community. Their goal is not some form of technological “purity,” rather it is the preservation of what is most important in community; faith and family. In an increasingly secularized western world, this mindset will set them apart as different. Myths and misconceptions are best defeated by a willingness to hear and understand someone. Many of the Amish are open to simple and basic questions that often arise. The intent of this column is to help bring some of those questions to the surface. Another way to discover the truth about the Amish is to visit the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center. The Center offers guided tours of "Behalt" - a 10 ft. x 265 ft. cyclorama oil-on-canvas painting that illustrates the heritage of the Amish and Mennonite people from their Anabaptist beginnings in Zurich, Switzerland, to the present day. Behalt means “to keep” or “remember.” The Center is open Mon-Sat 9:00-5:00 and is located near Berlin, OH at 5798 County Road 77, Millersburg, OH 44654. he four Furniture Heartland companies, Homestead, Troyer, Green Acres and Walnut Creek, all pride themselves on the quality of their products. Every piece offered by the members of the Furniture Association is crafted with the purpose of being passed down to the next generation. Offering far more than the stereotypical Amish furniture, the pieces being produced by the Furniture Heartland stores maintain a sturdy and durable quality, truly making it furniture for life. HOMESTEAD FURNITURE “My husband, Jeff, and I have been coming to Homestead for 14 years. Our whole house is now furnished by Homestead Furniture. Our loyalty speaks to the quality and service we receive each visit. And when we saw the slabs from the Gateway Tree, my husband really wanted something from this historic tree. Our modest table is beautiful. Although the original thought of where we would put it has changed, we still love it. Thanks Homestead, for a beautiful piece of furniture and a great conversation piece too!” - Anna Marie Howey, Galena, OH Designing products that complement today's technology and needs, the pieces being produced are designed with the consumer in mind. Many ideas for various pieces are drawn from the needs presented by visitors to the stores. TROYER FURNITURE “I love Troyers, great product and service. Karen helped me with a sofa table that I really wanted as a TV stand. Talking with her and making a drawing, I now have a beautiful TV stand along with matching side tables for my living room. The finished products are very beautiful and excellently made, I could not be happier. They also delivered on time and the gentlemen who delivered them were very careful. 20

Also Karen called several times to let me know how the progress was going. Karen's customer service was excellent, you just do not find this kind of service anymore, thank you.” -Lavonne Fetterman Offering supreme customer service, the Furniture Heartland stores provide their customers with the tools to complete their furniture dreams. If there is a piece on the floor that a customer loves, but would prefer to modify it to better suit their preferences, the Heartland stores will work with the customer to create the perfect piece. GREEN ACRES FURNITURE “Carolyn and I want you to know how thrilled we are with the dining room furniture. It is not only beautiful, but is flawlessly made and the finish is exquisite. The personal care used in its delivery is also very much appreciated. Please relay our sincere thanks to everyone who had a hand in the sale, manufacture, and delivery of the items. And of course, special thanks to you for your patience, help and expertise.” – Harold Hall, Stockton, MO The shear amount of repeat customers to all four Furniture Heartland stores bears witness to the support and honesty shown by staff members. The service provided to the customers has made them more willing to return and bring their friends. WALNUT CREEK FURNITURE "I have shopped with Walnut Creek Furniture for about 15 years now and every time I am very pleased. The craftsmanship is excellent and the value is quite good. They are also willing to make changes if the piece(s) you like are not quite what you are looking for or you can design something from scratch. They are amazing!" - K. Yap , Clemmens, SC

Each building is divided into two stacked suites, complete with individual wrap-around porches. The buildings offered through Homes with a View are positioned in such a way that one does not interfere with the view of the others. The privacy of a porch provides visitors with the opportunity to witness the peaceful landscape abundant in Amish Country. A guest may witness an Amish man working in his field or a woman hanging out the family wash. From the porch of each suite guests can submerge themselves in the peaceful tranquility of the area. Holmes with a View is conveniently located amidst the various communities of the Amish Heartland. Positioned with easy access to Millersburg and Berlin, visitors can spend time in both communities. Not sure what you’re looking for? Review the list of attractions provided in every suite. Depending on the season, the attractions may vary with the summer months being the most active. “A lot of people come from one year to the next,” says John Miller. Repeat customers are not abnormal at Holmes With A View. Most of the customers who have stayed at the bed and breakfast return with

Patrons should be warned that holidays have a tendency to book up fast and those with a particular date in mind should reserve their space as soon as possible. From the Desk of Javon Miller.... There is Life in Spring "Our God is great and mighty, His works we will proclaim; The wonder of his counsel, The glory of his name! Let all men fall before Him, Each creature on Earth's crust. Kneel down and laud His greatness, Who's works are true and just! Let heav'n and earth together, Prepare a song of praise, To glorify our maker, For his majestic ways. Cho. Praise Him with song of joy, Let us songs of praise employ. Praise Him Lord of all! Praise Him Lord of all!”

Springtime is my favorite time of year. The world is waking from months of drab dormancy. There is a certain beauty in the clear cold harshness of winter, but it cannot compare to the beauty of spring. Who is not invigorated by the balminess of a clear sunny spring day? The Earth is giving off that fresh rich scent of renewal. The birds are all merrily trilling their songs of praise to their maker as they prepare for the new clutch of babies. Is it not fitting that Easter is in springtime? We commemorate the resurrection of Jesus our Savior in a time when the Earth is resurrecting from death. On Easter morning, just as dawn was breaking on the horizon, I was outside doing my morning chores. The humdrum of mankind's life was silent. All I could hear was the sounds of creation. The eastern sky was starting to brighten to a glorious hue as the sun arose. I could hear the valley echoing with crowing cocks. My masters of the flock could not resist adding their own lusty responses to the serenade of joy. I could hear the constant song of birds in the treetops as they welcomed the dawn. I paused a few moments in wonderment at the 2288

marvelous ways of God. This, I thought, must be what it was like to live in the Garden of Eden. Pure undefiled life. Sin had not yet entered the world. Why did mankind have to fall and begin the deterioration of life? Since then, the times are few that we truly get a pure sense of nature as it was then. Occasionally we are granted a slight glimpse of it and then the door is shut by some earthly distraction. My closing door was the thought of another crowing rooster. This cock's crow was also associated with Easter. Matthew 26: 74-75 “…And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.” Imagine Peter's disappointment when Jesus' gaze connected with his. What a feeling of betrayal. The crowing cock reminded Peter of his human fallacy. He had been so sure of his steadfastness and now he had failed. Imagine how we would feel if that would have been us. My next question to myself is, how often do I deny my Lord in other, more discrete ways?

In springtime, it is pleasure to walk through the orchard and watch the fruit trees burst forth with life. As the weeks progress and the temperature rises, we can see that they can no longer be contained. At this point they burst forth with color and a heavenly natural perfume. The scent drifting from the trees is mesmerizing. The blossoms are a rare beauty. Their soft pastel colors show that we have a Creator who is interested in having his children find pleasure in this life. I think it is so fitting that this is the time of year when Jesus Christ arose from the tomb. Just as the bud's shell cannot contain the blossoms on the trees. The human shell of death could not contain the Spirit of God. The rocky tomb guarded by soldiers could not keep the power of God within. At the appointed time, Jesus burst from the tomb with the fragrance of grace and redemption. This redemptive power reached down to you and me today. Are we using our time on Earth to the praise and honor of our Creator? Let’s take a lesson from the natural world. A simple early morning walk in the quietness of the dawn will teach us how God desires it to be. In the quiet breaking of dawn, we can envision a future happening. Acts 1: 9-11 “And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you in to heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. When I observe the beauty of a clear, new dawn, I can picture Christ's return. This past Easter Sunday morning was one like it. I could easily imagine the heavens breaking out with heavenly host and Christ being in the center, descending to earth to claim His children. What a joy it will be at that time! We can also parallel the new growth of spring to our lives. What is more beautiful than a person that has a spirit of joy and peace? When a person gives up a life of selfishness that is filled with anger, bitterness, hate, violence, and self will and replaces it with love, joy, peace, caring and goes the second mile to help his fellow man, an aura of pleasantness surrounds them. I liken this to the

dormant drabness and dirt of winter fading into the beauty of the green grass, the fragrant blossom, and the mother love of nature. Which is more pleasant to live with? Obviously, the latter. Eccl. 3:11, “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time; also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.” Truly our God is great and mighty! As you travel about our country this spring you will see many farmers out working in the fields. It is a pleasure to many of us to be able to work with the resources that God has blessed us with. We enjoy the opportunity to work with our hands. We live in a unique community. Our climate is ideal for our way of life. Many areas in the world require irrigation for good farming to be done. Our area has been blessed to receive adequate rainfall without irrigation. With our picturesque topography, it is difficult for a farmer to go into huge commercial operations. This spawns the many small family farms that you will see. We consider it a blessing if we can work with our families on a personal daily basis. This is what builds strong family ties. A country is not stronger than its government, a government than its people, and the people than the families. This is why we feel blessed to have a culture that promotes strong family ties. This builds stronger churches and communities. Our way of life is important to us. We are

struggling with the encroachment of industry, commercialization, technology, and over settlement of our community. What the future has in store for us may be a challenge. One point to remember is that there is hope that flows to us through the advent of spring. As you can see, I enjoy lessons from creation. God will give each one of us the wisdom and the fortitude to search His ways and guidance. We have only to apply them to our life. May God grant us safety as we enjoy the simple pleasures of the coming season.

Respectfully submitted,
