Welcome To The 55 th Annual Barnesville Pumpkin Festival The officers and committee members are excited to welcome you to the 2018 Barnesville Pumpkin Festival. We are proud to be celebrating 55 years of this festival and invite you to join us Thursday, September 27 through Sunday, September 30 for contests, delicious foods, giant pumpkins, horticultural displays, arts, crafts, parade, car show and a super lineup of musical entertainment. Our committee of volunteers works hard each year to make each festival better than the one before. The Pumpkin Festival began in 1964 as a small street festival founded in the basement of the Catholic Church. Things have changed considerably since the earlier festivals. We have well over 100 ven-

dors providing concessions, rides and harvest-inspired arts and crafts, antiques and more. Local organizations and churches offer a variety of home-style foods. Entertainment and contests take place on two stages, the Central Stage on Main St. and the Pumpkin Stage on S. Chestnut St. With a variety of fun contests for both adults and children, a weigh-off of champion pumpkins, a giant pumpkin parade on Saturday, an antique and classic car show on Sunday – there is plenty to see and do and, best of all, admission remains FREE. Our musical acts this year include Roger Hoard, The Shuman Band, the New Silver Eagle Band, the Voices of Ohio, The Gypsy Cowboys,

One-A-Chord, 12 Gauge, Ron Retzer Trio, Tongue N Cheek, Ashley Best, Pocket Change, the Cabin Boys and more. The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival has become a tradition for families and friends, many who travel long distances to come each year to enjoy one of Ohio’s most popular festivals. We are very happy to have you visit and hope you have a most enjoyable and memorable time. Please visit our Information Booth during the festival, located at the corner of Main & Chestnut Streets, where we will answer any questions, guide you to various events or supply you with souvenirs. See you at the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival!

Welcomes you to the 2018 Barnesville Pumpkin Festival!

CONGRATULATIONS TODD & DONNA SKINNER FOR AN INCREDIBLE YEAR OF GROWING PUMPKINS AND ACHIEVING WORLDWIDE FAME!

up to the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival weigh-off just before the cutoff time. The crowd of several hundred had already witnessed two 1500+ pound pumpkins weighing in. However, this hometown crowd had been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Todd & Donna who had won the King Pumpkin title six times previously. Their pumpkin was carefully hoisted off the trailer and onto the scale. The anticipation and excitement was steadily building as Tim Miller ever so slowly unveiled each number on the electronic scale digit by digit - 0 – 5 – 1 – 2 to divulge the record setting weight of 2,150 pounds! It not only smashed Barnesville’s previous King Pumpkin record of 1,739 pounds, but broke the state of Ohio record for the heaviest pumpkin ever grown in this great state. October rolled around and, once again, the Skinners snip the vine on another giant and hauled it to Dublin, Ohio to the National Pumpkin Weigh-Off at the Oakland Nursery. It was in Dublin, where their pumpkin weighing in at an incredible 2,112 pounds, took yet another championship trophy and set another record at that site. Thus, completing the trifecta for Todd and Donna! It takes a huge amount of effort and dedication to grow champion giant pumpkins. According to Skinner, they spend approximately 40 hours per week for six months. It starts with good genetic seeds, a little chemical engineering trying to balance the proper nutrients, a good fertilizing program, shelter and shade from the elements, lots of time, patience and TLC. That is quite a commitment. The current world record pumpkin was grown in 2016 in Belgium and weighed 2,624.6 lbs. According to Skinner, that record will be hard to beat since it was grown in a greenhouse, which contributes greatly to ensuring the pumpkin puts on the pounds. We are so very proud to have these noteworthy pumpkins grown right here in the center of Barnesville and even more proud of Todd and Donna Skinner, a truly wonderful couple that display all of our hometown values. CONGRATULATIONS TODD AND DONNA! It was a near perfect growing year for Barnesville residents, Todd & Donna Skinner. Smashing three records here in Ohio and achieving global recognition put this couple in the state and world limelight! The Skinner’s earned the title of 2017 World Wide Great Pumpkin Commonwealth Grower of the Year! The Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC) is a world-wide organization of pumpkin growers which holds weigh-offs all around the world searching for the biggest pumpkins ever grown. Thousands of pumpkin growers strive to grow not only the largest pumpkin, but to raise three pumpkins with the heaviest combined weight. Todd and Donna raised and entered (and won and set records) pumpkins at three different GPC weigh-off sites here in Ohio in 2017 with a combined total weight of 5,883.5 pounds. Their trifecta year began in early August of 2017 when the Skinner’s took the smallest of their growing pumpkins to the Ohio State Fair. Not only was it the Champion pumpkin weighing in at 1,621.5 pounds, but it also beat the previous Ohio State Fair record by a whopping 565-1/2 pounds. Fast forward to September 20, 2017 at 8:59pm. Todd Skinner & family finally pull

2017 KING PUMPKIN WINNERS Local residents, Todd and Donna Skinner, broke all Barnesville Pumpkin Festival records again last year and set a new Ohio state record with their 2,150 pound pumpkin earning the title of King Pumpkin at the 54th annual Barnesville Pumpkin Festival. The second largest pumpkin weighing 1,568 pounds was grown by Andrew Mosher of Lakeville, OH. Third place went to Todd Cotterman of Fenton, MI. with his 1,512 pounder. The Founder’s Cup Trophy was also given to the King

Pumpkin winner for having the largest locally grown pumpkin. Locally grown is defined by being grown in Belmont, Guernsey, Harrison, Noble, Jefferson or Monroe Counties. Other pumpkin winners were as follows: 4th Place – 1,116 lbs. – David McMullen, Monaca, PA 5 h Place – 784 lbs. – Bexlee Powell, Barnesville, OH 6th Place – 732 lbs. – Brooks Bosworth, St. Clairsville, OH

KING PUMPKIN ON AUCTION BLOCK SATURDAY

PARKING, PARKING LOTS AND SHUTTLES For safely reasons, PLEASE do not park in the alleyways. These areas need to be kept clear for emergency vehicles. Parking for the Pumpkin Festival will be available at Memorial Park, Barnesville High School, The Depot, and the Watt Center. A shuttle bus will run continuously (except during the parade) from 9:30am to 6:00pm on Saturday between the parking lots to the Depot and downtown Festival areas. The shuttle will also run again during the same times on Sunday between the parking lots, downtown and to the High School where the Classic and Antique Car Show will be held. We encourage all Festival visitors to use the shuttle as parking spots are difficult to find.

Tim Miller announces the record setting weight as he congratulates Todd Skinner on last year’s King Pumpkin One of the most exciting events of the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival is the auctioning off of the King Pumpkin. This year should be even more exciting with the possibility of yet another record-breaking pumpkin weight. The excitement of King Pumpkin auction time always builds Saturday afternoon after the completion of the Giant Pumpkin Parade when local auctioneer, Richard Pryor, cranks it up with his sales call from the King Pumpkin Area. Pryor donates his time each year to sell the King Pumpkin as thousands of festival-goers look on. And the excitement does not stop until “SOLD” is called out. The auction is a major fund

raising effort for the Festival Committee. Last year’s King Pumpkin, weighing 2,150 pounds (setting a state record) and grown by Barnesville residents Todd and Donna Skinner, brought $7,500 and was purchased by Emory Rothenbuhler and Sons Trucking of Beallsville. The winning bidder not only supports the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, but also gets front-page billing on the following year’s official Pumpkin Festival Tabloid. They also get to show off the huge vegetable at their business for a week. Immediately following the sale of the King Pumpkin, an auction of the limited edition glass pumpkins is held.

The King Pumpkin Auction begins at 5:00pm on Saturday, September 29, in the area near the Giant Pumpkin display. For more information about the auction, stop at the Information Booth located in the vicinity. Just before the auction, the 2018 Royalty and Mascot will be introduced. A second auction will be held on the Festival’s closing day Sunday, September 30, at 5:00pm for all unclaimed produce entries as well as the raffle drawing for the ninth annual, custom-made Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Crock, crafted and donated by local artist Luke Johnson of Johnson Pottery.

THE PUMPKIN SEED HARVEST ON SUNDAY

If you’ve been contemplating trying to grow a giant pumpkin, then you might want to attend the Pumpkin Seed Harvest on Sunday. One of the giant pumpkins, other than the first, second or thirdplace winners, - and only if one is available - will be cut open and the seeds distributed, two each to anyone wanting the seeds. This takes place in the King Pumpkin area, the main attraction, where everyone gathers to admire these gentle giants, get their pictures taken and trade stories.

The Daniel Stephens Family provide an interesting and educational presentation that gives everyone an inside look at a big pumpkin and how to grow one. The demonstration takes place at 2:00pm Sunday, September 30, near the Information Booth. Don’t miss this informative exhibition and get your seeds too. We’d love to see you bring in your own giant pumpkins next year! Again, this will only happen if there is a pumpkin available!

The Laurel and Hardy of the advertising world Brian and Peter Riesbeck will be dropping their spatulas and picking up scissors September 27th when they cut the ribbon to open the 55th annual Barnesville Pumpkin Festival. The Riesbeck grocery store chain has been a strong supporter of the Pumpkin Festival for many years. The festival committee felt it was only appropriate to offer the honored (ribbon cutting) position to these grocery store icons. The dynamic duo of promoting produce, (they’re cousins not brothers) appear on television virtually every evening, cooking up appetites with a dash of deals and pinch of playfulness. Brian has been the Director of Sales and Marketing since January 2012. He is a lifelong resident of St. Clairsville, Ohio where he and his wife, Natalie, are raising their four children. He has held numerous positions with Riesbeck’s through the years. Brian is an active board member of Riesbeck Food Markets, Inc. He is a graduate of The Linsly Academy

A BOUNTIFUL DISPLAY OF AGRICULTURE & HORTICULTURE ENTRIES Agriculture and Horticulture Displays provide a visual display of color and a rich backdrop for the large pumpkins smack dab in the center of the Festival. Many hours of labor by both the growers and the festival volunteers go into these displays and we encourage anyone to participate. Entries are accepted from 9:00am to 8:00pm on Thursday, September 27. It is a long day for the many dedicated volunteers as they work to accept en-

tries. Gather those pumpkins, gourds, fruits or vegetables or make a scarecrow and bring to the festival to make this 55th year the largest agricultural display ever. Size limitations do apply so if you have any questions concerning restrictions or would like to volunteer to accept entries, please call the chairperson, Ashley Paprocki at 740-425-1350. The FFA judges award the winning ribbons on Friday morning.

We welcome our co-Grand Marshals of the 2018 Giant Pumpkin Parade, Retired Chief of Police Dave Norris and Retired Fire Chief Bob Smith. Dave Norris launched his law career as a Belmont County deputy reserve in 1986 during Sheriff Tom McCort’s tenure. That move came after a long career in the surface and underground coal mines. After his hire at Belmont County, he enrolled in the police academy at Jeff Tech in Steubenville where he graduated at the top of his class. It was while he was in the sheriff’s office that he got to know all the surrounding communities of which Barnesville he thought was the best town in Belmont County. When a Barnesville job opened up in 1991, Norris was offered a night-shift position of which he kept until the new prisons opened in St. Clairsville and Caldwell where several Barnesville officers accepted jobs. Norris was finally able to get off the night shift and then when Chris Ditto retired in 2006, Norris was named by village council to fill the job which he held until his retirement earlier this year. “Barnesville is a great place to be. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to work,” said Norris, adding that this is a very supportive community. Now that he is retired, Norris enjoys fishing and hunting and a good game of golf. (need family and personal information) Bob Smith, retired as Barnesville’s fire chief on May 31st, he was appointed to the Barnesville Fire Department on May 5, 1968, 50 years ago. Smith was promoted to captain in February 1976 and moved

Congratulations and Thank You 2017-2018

Queen Alana Trigg for attending more than 75 events and 10,000 miles traveled!

into the assistant chief position February 1989. Finally, he became fire chief in June 1999 upon “Shorty” Arnold’s retirement. On the question of harmony at home with his beloved wife Sandy, Smith noted fires and emergencies tended to occur at the inopportune times including his daughter’s wedding reception and other family gatherings. Despite this, his wife and her good friends formed a ladies’ auxiliary that helped raise funds and support for the department for many years. Smith’s wife gave him her full support right up until her passing two years ago following a courageous battle with cancer. Today, the department is well equipped with two engines, a ladder truck, one tanker, a brush truck, boat, four-wheeler, three emergency squads and two cars. The department’s service area is 83 square miles covering five townships. The EMS is now part of the fire department and is staffed 24/7 by paid employees while the fire department still consists of volunteers that are paid by the hour while on call. In Smith’s mind, none of this would have been possible without the support of Barnesville, Warren Township and the community at large. “This community has given us anything we’ve asked for. They have supported us 100% at all times.” Smith intends to spend time traveling and enjoying the company of his family. His daughter lives in Columbus and his son in Valley Grove. We are honored and proud to have both Norris and Smith serve as Co-Grand Marshals for the 55th Giant Pumpkin Parade! www.flowergardensbarnesville.com

GLASS PUMPKINS FOR 2018 The original small glass pumpkins customized for the 2018 Barnesville Pumpkin Festival will be for sale at the Information Booth. There will be six larger ones auctioned off after the King Pumpkin Auction on Saturday at 5pm. These pumpkins are hand blown by Bob Allen near Moundsville, West Virginia. Bob is the resident artist at Oglebay Institute at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, West Virginia. He started working in the glass industry in 1968 at Fostoria Glass in Moundsville and worked there until it closed in 1985. He also worked for Brooke Glass and L.E. Smith. Bob uses the off hand method where no molds are used to produce one-of-a-kind objects.

THE PUMPKIN WAGON SERVES PUMPKIN-BASED GOODIES The Pumpkin Wagon, operated by the Barnesville Area Chamber of Commerce will be ready to serve you the delicious pumpkin-based foods such as pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin donuts and pumpkin pies during the festival. The Pumpkin Wagon has become one of the most popular booths of the festival with many people coming back yearto-year to get their favorite items. Another reason the Pumpkin Wagon has become such a favorite spot is that it is staffed by many community volunteers. Many of the volunteers have served for a number of years while new ones join in to assist each year. In addition, “celebrity servers” will be manning the booth representing the local businesses many of which are dedicated members of the Barnesville Chamber of Commerce. Festival-goers really enjoy patronizing the Pump-

kin Wagon as they realize that all the profits go right back into the community to help the local area. With the Chamber of Commerce heading up the force, the profits are thereby put to use to further the interest of the businesses of Barnesville. It’s a great example of the “community supporting the community,” said John Rataiczak, Chamber Board President. On Friday, September 28, Emerald Pointe will sponsor FREE ICE CREAM from 2:00-5:00pm for Senior Citizens! The Pumpkin Wagon’s hours of operations will be Wednesday, September 26 from 5:009:00pm; Thursday and Friday, September 27-28 from 11:00am-10:00pm; Saturday from 9:00am10:00pm; and on Sunday from 12:00noon-5:00pm.

a colorFul Festial BackdroP It’s that time of year again when we think about Fall. When we think of Fall, those of us who live in and around Barnesville cannot help but think about the Pumpkin Festival. We start to get in the spirit of the Festival and start decorating with Fall décor and colors. When the Festival rolls around and the town is bustling with people, it is nice to have as many of the downtown windows decorated or painted as possible for all to enjoy. If you haven’t viewed or decorated a window, please do come check them out or perhaps take on the challenge of decorating one. For information on windows or to participate in judging, please call Cindy Ward at 740-296-3646. The categories are: antiques, childrens, collectibles, crafts, retail/merchant and royalty. So while you are downtown, take a stroll, relax a little, check out the windows and let us know what you think. We can tell you from experience, that the displayers put a lot of time and effort into making the windows look as nice as possible. A big thank you to the Barnesville High School Art Club which does a wonderful job on painting the windows.

Windows need to be decorated by Monday evening at 5:00pm on September 24, 2018 to qualify for judging. 2017 Winners: Best of Show Overall: Sewing Collection – Bobbie Moore, Antique Mall (left front window); Antiques: 1st – Raven Pickers 2nd – Emerald Pointe; Collectibles: 1st – Avenues of Barnesville, 2nd – Barnesville Vision Center; Crafts; 1st – Hazlett, Burt & Watson; 2nd – Generations; Children’s; 1st – Bo Detling; Merchants: 1st – Raven Pickers, 2nd – Emerald Pointe. MR. FANCY PANTS WILL ROCK THE STAGE SATURDAY NIGHT Mr. Fancy Pants has been around since 2009. As the brain-child of an aging hipster/guitar/singer with a back catalog of random rock tunes and no designs on growing old gracefully, Mr. Fancy Pants has maintained some sort of existence, at some level, for the past six years. They have recorded some songs for an album called “So, You Think You Can Pants” which any interested person can acquire for free simply by going to sdeckermrfancypants.bandcamp.com and downloading the tracks to his or her preferred digital music player. 2017 saw the completion and release of a new album titled “Let’s Pants”. While the lineup has changed over the years, the spirit of the band remains the same. It is as it was – three dudes in their mid to late 30’s getting together when they can to make some music. The band features Sean Decker, guitar and vocals, Ryan Sears, bass and vocals and Matt Klempa, drums. The band is based out of Wheeling and leans toward serious pop music with an indie-rock vibe. The band will play on the Pumpkin Stage Saturday night after from 8:30 to 11pm. Don’t miss their show!

THE GYPSY COWBOYS ON PUMPKIN STAGE FRIDAY EVENING AT 6:00 Ohio to Alaska … and back … the wayfaring gypsy lifestyle comes as no stranger …. Influences of Appalachian ol’ time music, country blues, celtic, to the rock scene of the 70’s …. Thrown into a kettle, simmered and cooked ….the result: the Gypsy Cowboys’ brand of Americana. From the western foothills of Appalachia, come ol’ time melodies combined with

eclectic vocals and rhythms. Growing up in the small towns of eastern Ohio’s rustbelt are band members Cary Besece and his nephew Erek Gildow, both playing banjo, mandolin, guitar, harmonica and providing vocals. Stephen Kelner wraps up the trio playing banjo, guitar and mandolin. A sound and presence boiled in the

copper vats of the Appalachian mountains, the skylines of the rockiets to the shadow of denali, these fellas are crossing generational and cultural divides to bring you their unabashed and unrestrained take on Americana music. The Gypsy Cowboys perform on the Pumpkin Stage Friday night at 6pm.

THE FULL SOUNDS OF RON RETZER TRIO SATURDAY NIGHT AT 6:30 The Ron Retzer Trio is comprised of Ron Retzer, Jennifer Galownia and Bob Wolfe. Each person has a unique solo style voice, which is fluently featured, and when combined in harmony with all 3 members, the result is outstanding. To quote an editorial in the Steubenville Herald Star newspaper “each voice of these three people separately is beautiful, but when they sing together they are blessed beyond belief with harmony so spectacular …..” Along with the superb vocal abilities and excellent harmonies of the trio, Ron accompanies them with his impressive and tasteful piano technique. Not only that but, 21st century technology has allowed Ron to use synthesizers, samplers, sequencers and computers to

incorporate bass guitar and drums into the overall “live” mix of the Ron Retzer Trio, making them sound as full and as strong as a 4-piece band. Their live concerts … a mix of beautiful vocal solos, exquisite combined harmonies, impressive instrumental playing and fun filled personality quips and jabs …. make for a most pleasurable, unforgettable and inspiring concert experience. A quality time that is well spent. Catch their show on the Central Stage from 6:30pm to 8pm on Saturday night.
