If library patrons cannot get to the library, the library can come to them, so to speak. Thanks to the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library’s adult outreach program, people who have difficulty getting to the library for such reasons as age, disability or illness do not have to go without its services. In addition, the children’s outreach program helps introduce the very young to books. “I regularly visit 13 day cares and preschools every month,” said Children Services Outreach Librarian Amanda Rome, who also regularly goes to area elementary schools and other locations, such as coffee shops. Adult Outreach Librarian Jackie McCloud said the adult program began in February 2001 at Keys Towers on Fishcreek Road in Stow. It now visits seven locations, visiting them in a 2016 Ford Transit XLT Wagon, a commercial-grade vehicle the library has had since December. In addition, volunteers take materials to individual homes for those who are homebound.

“In 2015 we served a combined total of 1,374 patrons for the Outreach and the Homebound programs,” said McCloud. “These programs circulated a combined total of 9,844 items.”

The adult outreach staff now visit seven facilities in the Stow and Munroe Falls and Keys Towers is still on the list for adult visits, which typically last 30 to 45 minutes twice a month. “It works out nice because they can make requests and don’t have to wait too long,” said McCloud. McCloud and Adult Outreach Assistant Sara Leighton took six plastic bins filled mostly with books, but with some CDs and DVDs, for one such visit Feb. 9, laying the items on several tables in a common room for any residents with a

library card who chose to come down and look. “We bring a variety and they’re able to request things as well,” said Leighton. Ten residents, mostly senior citizens, came; 29 items were checked out, not counting those specifically requested. McCloud and Leighton used a tablet computer to handle the checkouts. Examples of books, many in large print, placed on tables included mysteries, thrillers and Westerns, with such authors as Jonathan Kellerman, Clive Cussler, Iris Johansen and Tom Clancy represented. There were also non-fiction books, such as “Killing Kennedy” and Killing Lincoln,” both by Bill O’Reilly, and “41: A Portrait of My Father” by George W. Bush. DVDs included “Field of Dreams,” “When Harry Met Sally,” the

remake of “True Grit” and “Citizen Kane” and documentaries like “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe” and the “Planet Earth” series. Musical artists on the CD table included Harry Connick Jr., Dolly Parton, John Coltrane and a compilation, “The 100 Best Jazz Tunes of the 1950s.” “It really depends on what the residents have asked for,” said McCloud of the choices. “We kind of have to keep track of residents’ preferences.” Resident Lillian James, 86, has lived at Keys Towers for 15 years. “I come down whenever they’re here,” she said. “It means a lot to me. I can’t get out to the library and I read all the time.” James’ selections included “In the Dark, Dark Wood,” a thriller by Ruth Ware, and the non-fiction “Kate: The Future Queen.” “It’s good that they get out here,” said James. David Calderone, 44, who came with his dog Dierks, is legally blind and checked out a couple of audio books that McCloud thought he would like: “The Murder House” by James Patterson and “The Racketeer” by John Grisham. He said he likes mysteries and thrillers, but also some non-fiction, such as biographies. “It means a lot to me because I don’t get out much,” said Calderone. “I hope they keep doing it. It’s a nice program.” Meanwhile, last year a total of 717 items were loaned out to people who are homebound in their own houses. Judy Cohen-Baer, has volunteered about five years. “I see the same ladies every two weeks,” she said. “I’ve had as many as four every two weeks. Right now, I have three. They’re all really enthusiastic readers.” She said people she sees may be elderly or not able to leave their homes for other reasons, such as a disability. “They’re all really excited to have [the program]. One of my ladies says it’s like getting a Christmas package every two weeks. They’re excited to see what we have,” said Cohen-Baer, adding that “I meet the most lovely people.”

“It’s really a wonderful loan service the library does,” she said. “It strengthens the community and it’s one of the things that makes the library special.” McCloud said that at the facilities the library visits, library cards can be issued on site to those who do not have one and want to begin checking out materials. For the homebound program, she said the issue of someone not having a card has never come up, but she believes they can be similarly accommodated. The individual must live in Stow or Munroe Falls to be eligible for the homebound program, said McCloud, and acceptance is subject to an interview by library staff at the home to ensure eligibility, as well as the safety of volunteers visiting the home. Accepted reasons for being homebound can include age and disability, but also more temporary reasons, such as illness or injury. Last year, the children’s outreach program averaged about 25 programs for about 800 children and caregivers at 26 locations around Stow and Munroe Falls, according to Rome. Story times, a summer reading program, a Preschool and Daycare Fair in February and a booth at Summer Sunset Blast on Labor Day weekend were included activities by the children’s outreach program last year. Rome leads family nights at Stow Alliance Preschool at Stow Alliance Church and Summit County Preschool at Indian Trail Elementary School, with stories, crafts and snacks for a combined total of more than 200 people. 250 pieces by children at five area preschools and daycare centers. In all, nearly 13,000 books were loaned out in 2015, including to teachers, through the children’s outreach program. Rome said she is uncertain when the children’s outreach program began, but she is in her fourth year and is the fifth person to hold her position. “The library has been doing most of this stuff a lot longer than I’ve been doing it,” she said. Rome said the number one goal of the outreach program is improving literacy and an enjoyment of reading. “The kids love it,” she said. “My equation is the library equals books equals fun.” On Feb. 24, she paid a visit to Summit County Preschool students at Indian Trail Elementary School, reading to the children, singing songs and telling a story with puppets, with children taking part by pretending they were the wind that blows a hat around to various farm animals. “It’s amazing,” said preschool teacher Jenifer Smith. “The kids are thoroughly animated by Amanda’s presentation. You can tell a lot of preparation goes into it.” Rome gave a modest response to this assessment. “I do my best,” she said. KO-10444300

‘Iconic’ former Red Barn a destination for animals by JEFF SAUNDERS | REPORTER

A longtime area animal hospital has expanded by opening a second location in the city, preserving a recognizable former fast food restaurant in the process. Last July, Stow Kent Animal Hospital opened Stow Falls Pet Clinic in what was originally a Red Barn restaurant in the 1970s at 3403 Kent Road. Medical Director Dr. Angela Albers used the word “surreal” to describe her feelings about being inside her family’s newest location, saying, “I remember coming here as a little girl when it was Red Barn.” “I’m just rooted in this area,” she said, adding that the building’s resemblance to a barn is a good fit for an animal hospital. “I liked that aspect as well and it’s kind of an iconic building,” said Albers. “We like to keep the character of the community rather than bulldozing.” The Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce awarded its Commercial Improvement Award to Stow Falls Pet Clinic in recognition of this renovation at the Discover Stow & Munroe Falls • 2016

Chamber’s annual community business awards luncheon Jan. 19. Albers said this philosophy is in keeping with what Stow Kent has done at its original location to the east at 4559 Kent Road. It is a 1920s farm house that has been expanded three times since Albers’ father, Dr. Thomas Albers, started the practice with his wife, Carmela in 1967. Stow Falls Pet Clinic is actually the practice’s third location. It also owns Portage Animal Hospital in Brimfield. Stow Falls Pet Clinic is at the corner of Williamson Road, not far east of Route 91. Its existence is a reflection of Stow Kent’s need to expand.

“It’s to help with overflow at Stow Kent,” said Manager Debbie Aikens. “It is to give people on this side of town some place closer.” After the Red Barn closed, it was for a number of years Brandon Heating and Cooling, which Albers said was another personal connection for her because Fran Brandon, a member of the family that owned the business, was one of Albers’ teachers at Stow High School. Aikens said it took about a year of planning and construction to renovate the empty interior of the building, which had been vacant for four years. “It started with four walls,” said Aikens. “Basically we had to start over,” said Supervisor Amanda Siciliano. Interior walls had to be built, drop ceilings added and new flooring put in. “The building was 100 percent uninsulated,” added Albers. Entering the hospital, one of the first things a client will notice is that the waiting area is divided into two parts — one for dogs and one for cats — by a low wall. Three exam rooms are for dogs. “They’re big spacious rooms so the dogs don’t feel cornered,” said Siciliano, A fourth smaller room is reserved for cats. “In the cat room, we don’t let dogs in so [the cats] don’t smell them,” said Siciliano, adding that calming pheromones are also used in the room. Beyond that, there is a pharmacy and lab area, then a surgery suite and treatment area where the restaurant’s kitchen was. “We have done actually some limited surgeries, but minor stuff,” said Albers. Siciliano said for now, Stow Falls is

more limited than Stow Kent, with minor injuries and “a lot of wellness” handled. “Anything that needs X-rays, ultrasound, hospitalization, they go down the road [to Stow Kent],” said Siciliano. But in a way, this makes Stow Falls an attractive location for clients bringing their pets in for routine checkups and shots. “There are no emergencies,” said Siciliano. “It’s calmer so some people like to come here.” Aikens said “same day appointments” are usually available and “we’re accepting new patients.” Besides dogs and cats, the practice also sees other species as well, including birds, goats, rabbits and other small mammals, and reptiles. “But no horses, that’s our limit,” said Albers.

That hardly sounds like typical high school fare, but you can not only find dishes like this at StowMunroe Falls High School for students, it is prepared and served by students. Stow-Munroe Falls High School is a training ground for future culinary artists and hospitality experts, and it provides education in these studies for students in the Six District Educational Compact. The Six District Educational Compact involves six area school districts — Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Kent, Stow-Munroe Falls and Tallmadge City Schools and Woodridge Local Schools — which have pooled their resources to provide career training and college tech prep to its students, as well as the community. The culinary and hospitality program’s practice ground is Joshua’s Restaurant, which is within the high school. Not only can students sample what their peers are serving up, but the public is invited to come enjoy something from the Joshua’s menu or the salad bar on Thursdays and Fridays, from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition, Joshua’s is open

every morning, where early birds can enjoy a coffee bar, bagels and muffins from 7 to 7:30 a.m. “We want them to be hands-on,” said Tracey Lee, culinary arts instructor. “We want them to use their 21st century skills and teamwork. Everyone has a gift they bring to the table, whether it’s working with food or working with people. It’s our job to teach them, but it is also our job to learn from them.” Lee said she works along with Chef Jen Giangaspero on the crucial skills students will need to pursue a career in the culinary or hospitality field. “Chef G and I, we kind of tag team,” Lee said. “She’s the chef instructor. She works with the students in the back and their culinary skills. I do safety and sanitation, hospitality, and dining room services and operations.” Senior Sydney Hamolia of Cuyahoga Falls said that she wanted to be a caterer or an executive chef. “Chef G. got me into the business,” Hamolia said as she sliced chicken breasts. “When I came to the orientation last year, I fell in love with the kitchen. I’ve been cooking with my mom since I was five. Last week, I had a bad day and baked a cake. Just because.” Robert Daniels, on the other hand, said while he likes to cook, he’s planning to study ecology and zoology in college. “I love to cook, so that’s why I started here,” said Daniels, a senior at Kent Roosevelt. He was slicing pineapple

into thin pieces and arranging them on a plate. “When I was 6, I was in the kitchen with my mom, and ever since then I’ve been cooking. It’s a hobby for me.” Dante DiGeronimo, a senior at Hudson High School, said that he was president of the Italian Club at the school. “I want to do multiple Italian culture dishes,” DiGeronimo said. “I want to honor my heritage.” He added that he may open his own restaurant one day, when he’s older. A.J. Greer, a senior at Kent Roosevelt, was working on a carving of a lobster out of watermelon pieces. He, too, said his mother inspired him when he was young when it came to cooking. However, he views cooking as more of a hobby. “I want to go to Kent and major in psychology,” he said. “I realized as I got deeper in, [cooking] is not what I want to do for the rest of my life.” Brittany Bailey, a senior at Kent Roosevelt, said she learned cooking from her grandmother when she spent her summers with her grandparents. “I’m hoping to open my own bakery in Kent,” she said as she breaded chicken breasts. “I would make cupcakes, that is what I am really good at, and other desserts.” Breanna Hubbard, a senior at Cuyahoga Falls High School, said she currently works at the Country Inn and Suites in Cuyahoga Falls. Her experience there has inspired her to pursue hospitality as a career. “I’ve applied to Kent State’s hospitality program,” Hub-

Mary Jane Stanchina, the executive director for the Six District Educational Compact for the last 30 of its 46 years, said that the Compact offers a variety of programs and workshops. “We have a conference for eighth-grade girls interested in math and science,” Stanchina said. “We’ve been doing this since 1997. Also, in the summer, we do a summer aviation experience, in a partnership with Kent State University. We’ve been doing that for quite some time.” Students in the six school districts have a wide variety of career options to explore: automotive, business, computers, cosmetology, criminal justice, robotics, forestry, health careers, marketing, teaching, theater and more. “We just added the criminal justice program this year,

at the Cuyahoga Falls High School,” she said. The Stow-Munroe Falls High School is the site for four of these programs, Stanchina said. As well as the culinary and hospitality program, the high school also provides education in aeronautics and programming and software development. StowMunroe Falls High School is also the site for another program started this year, the International Business Academy. In addition, the high school also offers one of the four components in the Engineering Academy, with instruction on polymers. One feature at Joshua’s restaurant is a recent collaboration to obtain food products from local farms and local business, Stanchina said. “Last year, to my delight, they started the farm-to-table concept,” she said. “They have local purveyors of foods.” Local vendors include Kirbie’s Meats, Breakneck Acres, TLC Farms and Bent Tree coffee, according to information provided by the Six District Educational Compact. All of the programs offered through the Six District Educational Compact have at least one university partner, Stanchina said. “Some of them have two or three partners,” she said. “But each career field has at least one.” Currently, there are a total of 4,262 students participating in programs through the Six District Educational Compact, Stanchina said. This fundraiser is sponsored by the city of Stow / Stow Safety Forces Relay For Life team. The event will include lunch and activities including going through an obstacle course one-on-one with a Stow firefighter. 100 percent of the donations go to Relay For Life through the city of Stow / Stow Safety Forces team.

Paw Fest is a free event sponsored by the Stow-Munroe Falls Lions Club featuring dog contests, entertainment, vendors, food and prize drawings.
