he City has seen many new and revitalized institutions over the last 15 years. Those institutions include social, business, educational, religious and financial entities that are making continuous efforts to grow and prosper. As one looks back on the events of the past few years, it is evident that the Alliance community and its citizens demonstrate a resilience that has endured over the course of the city’s history.

Alliance is at the center of the Eastern Stark County Region and provides goods and services as well as quality of life elements that attract people to our city from a regional perspective. Statistics indicate that more than 75,000 people come to Alliance for their commercial needs. Being at the juncture of Stark, Columbiana and Mahoning counties makes Alliance the center of commerce for the region.

The business community has led the way. MAC Trailer added a site to their operations, American Recycling expanded, and we welcomed Alliance Restoration and Construction, Danbury Senior Living, Hampton Inn, Northwood Realty Services and Smith Machine.

The Downtown Art, Culture and Entertainment District is also gaining momentum. Current renovation projects include Jupiter Studios, the former Heggy’s building and Carnation Cleaners. New to the downtown area is Paris Studios, an active workspace and display area for local artists. Area attractions include the international headquarters of the Cat Fanciers’ Association and their associated Feline Historical Museum, which is open for touring. The downtown Alliance Farmers’ Market has been a tremendous success on summer Saturday mornings, as has the Downtown Summer Concert Series on Friday nights. ArtsinStark has chosen downtown Alliance as a focus for renewal over the next decade in the areas of art, culture, entertainment and retail. The Troll Hole, with the largest collection of troll dolls in the world, is located on Main Street. For many decades the Carnation City Players have performed live theater at the Firehouse Theater on Market Street. The renovated Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge stands out as a major connector and tribute to Dr. King as well as Alliance’s historical link to the railroad. The future is bright for the renaissance of the downtown region.

The educational community has seen continued growth as well. The leader has been the University of Mount Union.

The university has grown and expanded its offerings, including new undergraduate degrees in nursing and engineering and graduate degrees in physician assistant studies and educational administration. A Doctor of Physical Therapy program will be added soon. Also new is the renovation of the theater complex, The Giese Center for the Performing Arts.

Stark State College provides technical and career curriculum. They have opened their new facility at and in collaboration with the Alliance Community Hospital. The collaboration has included the local school district, so that a nursing student can start with Alliance High School’s LPN program, spiral through the RN curriculum at Stark State, and then attain a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Mount Union, all within a few blocks of each other and in con-

Continued from page 4 junction with the hospital. The Alliance Career Centre and the Robert T. White School of Practical Nursing relocated to Alliance High School this year.

Attractions in the city include the Haines House, offering visitors the opportunity to explore an Underground Railroad “station,” used to aid slaves on their escape north. The Mabel Hartzell Historic Home, located at the corner of Park Avenue and Vine Street, is operated by the Alliance Historical Society and contains many artifacts of Alliance history.

Another major attraction is Glamorgan Castle, located on Union Avenue in the heart of the city, which offers tours every Friday during the year.

The city’s park system continues to be a mainstay for recreation in Alliance. On the south side is the city treasure of Silver Park, home to the Fourth of July fireworks celebration as well as the site for many of the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival events in August touting Alliance as the “Carnation City,” the home of the scarlet carnation, which is the state flower of Ohio.

Silver Park is the home of the city’s 9/11 Memorial, a moving display of artifacts from the World Trade Center. Each summer the Hot Stove League hosts their local, regional, and state tournaments at Butler-Rodman Park located on State Street, an annual occurrence in the city for over 60 years.

In addition to museums to attract people there are many sporting, music, art and theatrical events yearround in the city. The University of Mount Union, besides boasting a nationally recognized football program, has a full range of spectator sports, including their new lacrosse program.

In the same respect all manner of sports and artistic entertainment can be utilized through the local public school programs of Alliance, Marlington and West Branch school districts.

For more than 100 years, the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce has been in President business to help grow a strong Mark Locke Alliance.

“We’re looking forward to starting our second 100 years,” said President Mark Locke, noting the Chamber held its centennial celebration in 2015. “We’re here to help businesses succeed however we can. Our members dictate our agenda.”

That includes holding networking events, addressing legislative concerns and offering educational and marketing seminars.

Located at 210 E. Main St. and occupying a kiosk at Carnation City Mall, the chamber is made up of more than 400 member businesses and professional leaders whose purpose is advancing the economic, industrial, professional, cultural and civic welfare of the Alliance area.

The chamber encourages the growth of existing industry and businesses while giving proper assistance to any new firms or individuals seeking to locate in the area, to support all those activities beneficial to the community and to oppose those which might be detrimental, and to promote the welfare of all area citizens, always following those policies intended to accomplish the greatest good for the greatest number.

The chamber also works closely with cities, townships and county development officials to develop a comprehensive plan for economic development.

Locke said the chamber also provides information to individuals who are interested in relocating to the Carnation City, including general information about Alliance and local realtors.

Among its divisions is one dedicated to women, the first of its kind in Ohio, which raises funds to support area nursing homes and shelters.

The chamber is a member of the Canton-Stark County Convention and Visitors Bureau, handling city tourism.

BUSINESS RESOURCES: The chamber maintains directories of businesses, manufacturers, churches and organizations in the Alliance area; distributes a chamber newsletter; assists merchants with anti-fraud efforts; and hosts seminars and workshops for business and industrial members.

INSURANCE: Offers commercial, long-term workers’ compensation and health insurance through a cooperative pooling program.

ADDITIONAL DISCOUNTS: Chamber members receive discounts on print and radio advertising through Dix Communications/The Alliance Review and WDPN/WDJQ. They also receive discounted YMCA memberships.

A TOWN CALLED

ALLIANCE It is uncertain how Alliance got its name.

The moniker may have come about after two major railroads – The Ohio & Pennsylvania and The Cleveland & Wellsville — laid tracks that intersected in 1850 in what for a brief time was called Liberty, which was also known as “The Crossing.”

Another popular belief is that the name “Alliance” was chosen because of the fact that the city was incorporated in 1854 after the joining of three smaller communities, including Liberty, Williamsport (founded in 1827 by William Teeters) and Freedom (founded in 1838 by Mathias Hester). In 1889, the village of Mount Union was also annexed into Alliance.

Alliance has been referred to as the town where Main Street dead ends. While this may be true, the plan made a lot of sense when the town was platted. Main Street was an avenue to bring people to the city’s busiest location – the train station – which provided a means of personal transportation and was central to industry for bringing in raw material and sending out finished goods. In fact, through the railroads, the city grew and flourished and several industrial endeavors thrived for decades.

The railroad also provided the backdrop for many memorable moments in the

history of Alliance.

Near the present-day Amtrak station Abraham Lincoln made a brief stop – the only one he ever made in Stark County – on Feb. 15, 1861, where he enjoyed a turkey dinner at the adjoining Sourbeck House and made a short greeting on his way to his first inauguration.

The building, which no longer stands, was also visited by several other influential people in its time, including King Edward VII when he was the Prince of Wales, Gen. Winfield Scott and Hungarian revolution leader Lajos Kossuth. In 1867, Union generals Ulysses S. Grant, a future president, William Tecumseh Sherman and Philip Sheridan ate a meal there together.

Another famous visitor to Alliance’s train station was William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States.

McKinley, a resident of Canton, had strong ties to Alliance. He spent a brief time as a student at Mount Union and was later a member of the institution’s board of trustees.

And it was McKinley’s association with a local doctor that led to Alliance becoming the Carnation City, home of Ohio’s state flower, which is celebrated each year with a 16-day festival in August.

Ohio’s official state flower is not only a red carnation, but the scarlet carnation, which was cultivated by Alliance’s Dr. Levi Lamborn, an avid horticulturalist, after purchasing some French seedlings in 1866. What he propagated from those plants was a new variety that he first called the “Lamborn Red.” In addition to his medical practice and his love of plants, Lamborn, who also started the town’s first newspaper and a bank, was a politician.

In 1876, Lamborn was running for the seat in the 18th Congressional District and his opposition was McKinley. Prior to each debate, Lamborn presented McKinley with a carnation boutonniere. McKinley, successful in those debates,

Continued from page 8 often spoke about Lamborn’s carnation as his good luck charm throughout the rest of his political career, which included several more terms in Congress and a term as Ohio governor before being elected president in 1897.

He was wearing one of the Lamborn’s flowers in his lapel on Sept. 14, 1901, as he stood in a receiving line at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, when a 12-yearold girl named Myrtle Ledger asked McKinley if he could give her something to show her friends to prove that she had met the president. McKinley gave the girl his carnation. Moments later anarchist Leon Czolgosz walked up to the president with a .32-caliber pistol hidden in a bandage wrapped around his hand and shot McKinley twice. The president died of his wounds eight days later.

Three years after McKinley’s death, the Ohio General Assembly voted to make the Lamborn carnation, more commonly known as the scarlet carnation, the official state flower as it “represented a token of love and reverence for the Ohio president.”

On April 1, 1959, the Ohio Legislature proclaimed Alliance “The Carnation City” and an Ohio historical marker stands in the first block of West Main Street, in front of where Lamborn’s greenhouses once stood, commemorating Alliance as the birthplace of Ohio’s state flower.

The marker is one of three that stand in Alliance.

house from 1883 to 1954. She helped found the Alliance Historical Society, the Alliance Woman’s Club, the Alliance chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Alliance Area Retired Teachers Association.

Another monument stands in Alliance City Cemetery, marking the Sultana tragedy, the worst maritime disaster on American soil in which eight members of Company F of the 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry died in an explosion that killed approximately 1,800 when the steamboat carrying 2,400 exploded seven miles north of Memphis on the Mississippi River on April 27, 1865.

Of course, many of Alliance’s prominent citizens have been laid to rest inside the cemetery, including several industrial leaders, the town’s early pioneers and Medal of Honor recipient Abraham Greenawalt, a private in Company G of the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry that captured an enemy flag at Franklin, Tennessee, on Nov. 30, 1864.

Ohio state law requires any dog over the age of three months to have a license within 30 days of ownership. Any license purchased after 30 days of ownership (or renewed after the annual renewal period) must include a penalty equal to the cost of the license. Stark County tags cost $14 for an adult license if purchased by Jan. 31 with duplicate licenses available for $5.

The sales tax rate in Stark County is 6.50 percent.

SIDEWALKS

Property owners are responsible for installing and maintaining sidewalks.

SNOW REMOVAL

Residents are responsible for cleaning snow from sidewalks in front of their property. Parking bans are broadcast over WDPN 1310 AM and WDJQ 92.5 FM and listed on the-review.com.

SOLICITORS

For-profit and nonprofit groups and individuals must obtain a permit from the mayor’s office, 504 E. Main St., at least 10 days in advance of the sale. The permit costs $100.

Tom Pukys, president of Alliance Area Development, a foundation that aims to retain businesses and help them expand, believes that retail sector growth that is so visible, is a result of what is going on in the manufacturing sector that many people may not see.

“What we’re seeing with the new businesses opening on State Street is being fueled by what is going on in manufacturing,” said Pukys.

Since 2014, a $10 million capital investment has helped create 750 new jobs in the area across 20 companies, according to Pukys.

Nowhere is that more evident than with MAC Trailer, a company that started with one bay in the 1990s and is now the largest manufacturer of custom-built trailers in North America with seven facilities in three states.

MAC Trailer expanded in 2015, taking up a second residence in the Car-

nation City when it created a waste division in a 190,000-square-foot building in the Alliance Industrial Park that formerly housed a tire warehouse.

MAC Trailer established five production lines at the Main Street Extension site in which it now builds its aluminum refuse trailer line.

The company still maintains its corporate headquarters and production facility at its Commerce Street location where it manufactures dump trailers.

MAC Trailer President and CEO Mike Conny hoped to be able to employ 250 at the new location, making it the largest industrial employer in Alliance with about 700.

Meanwhile, Coastal Pet, which employs more than 500 in Alliance, took the first steps to expanding its footprint by 50 percent in 2015 when it got approval for a 22,000-squarefoot warehouse addition.

“There are good things going on in our manufacturing base,” said Pukys.

“That is really exciting to see.”

The three Carnation City icons would be proud of what’s going on along State Street these days.

In 2015, no less than 12 new businesses opened or were soon to open their doors, while another longtime operation changed its location, moving into a brand new building.

Inside College Plaza, on the east side of Alliance, Planet Fitness opened to great anticipation after announcing nearly a year before that it would be taking up residence in one of the empty storefronts.

College Plaza, located a 1100 E. State St., was once a premiere shopping center in the area, and is enjoying a resurgence with the opening of the workout facility as well as announced plans for Family, Farm and Home, an agricultural retail store, to move into another one of its large storefronts that has been vacant for 14 years.

Traveling west a few blocks, Mr. Hero returned to Alliance, opening a store at 437 E. State St. Also making a return to the Carnation City was Buffalo Wild Wings, one of six new businesses that opened at the Mount Union Gateway development, located between Clark Avenue and Shunk Avenue, across from the University of Mount Union.

Other new businesses inside the Gateway development include Farmers National Bank, a T-Mobile outlet and Orange Leaf, a frozen yogurt shop. A Papa Gyro’s restaurant and a Georgio’s Pizza were also expected to open at the site by 2016.

A little farther to the west, a new GetGo convenience store and gas station opened inside the Buckeye Marketplace, located in the 1800 block of West State Street.

Across the street, in a lot that once housed a trucking company, sprang up three new buildings, including a fourstory, 86-room Hampton Inn, an O’Reilly Auto Parts store and a Wendy’s, which relocated from another site on State Street.

A block west, Hibbett Sports, a sporting goods retailer specializing in footwear, equipment and apparel, took up residence in the Kohl’s plaza.

Farther west, a Starbuck’s coffee shop was constructed at the intersection of State Street and Freshley Avenue, across from Carnation City Mall, which also had Carnation Comic Book as well as Oasis Book and Music and Home Coffee open inside its facility.

It’s beginning to look a lot like an arts district...

he area along Main Street and Market Street was already home to the Firehouse Theater, Paris Gallery and Studio and Jupiter Studios as well as a pair of one-of-a-kind attractions – the Troll Hole Art Emporium and Gift Shop and the Cat Fanciers’ Association Foundation Feline Historical Museum.

However, some new pieces of public art unveiled in 2015 are bringing it all together thanks to the efforts of 20/20 Vision Alliance, a planned partnership between ArtsinStark and the University of Mount Union designed to foster economic development and downtown revitalization with a little help from arts and history.

Drawing on Alliance’s origins through the railroad, the downtown area has once again been dubbed “The Crossing,” an early name for the settlement near the current downtown area due to the fact that two major railroads intersected there in 1850. A mini-mural, painted by local artist Dirk Rozich, hangs at the entrance of the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce office, declaring the area as such.

To honor that past, six public art bicycle racks crafted by artist Joseph Close to resemble steam locomotives have been spaced along Main Street. Close, whose work can be seen nationwide, fashioned the racks from recycled steel donated by PSC Metals Inc. He also painted 12 mini masterpieces of Alliance icons in the puffs of smoke on each piece.

The images, two per rack, include a Taylorcraft airplane, a Morgan Engineering crane, a troll for the Troll Hole, a cat for the Cat Fanciers’ Association Foundation Feline Historical Museum, the Haines House, the Glamorgan Castle, Alliance Community Hospital, Chapman Hall at the University of Mount Union, the Marchand Opera House, the Mabel Hartzell Historic Home, a historic downtown bank and a scarlet carnation.

— the Lexington Hotel, which served as the first chamber office; Columbia Theater, the site of the first annual meeting; William Henry Morgan, the chamber’s first president; a chamber float from the first Carnation Festival Grand Parade; Chapman Hall, representing the University of Mount Union, one of the chamber’s eight charter members; and images representing the railroad industry — in color surrounding a black and white central “portal to the past.”

During its dedication, Alliance Mayor Alan Andreani called the mural a “kickoff” to what officials are trying to do downtown.

Robb Hankins, CEO of ArtsinStark, said downtown Alliance has much potential.

“This downtown has more raw potential than any other downtown in just two blocks,” said Hankins during the mural’s dedication. “It just needs to be discovered.”

Over the last few years, the downtown area has become a destination spot for various activities, including a concert series featuring local and regional bands at the Caboose, located at Main Street and Mechanic Avenue, on most Friday nights during the summer.

The same area is transformed into a farmers market on Saturday mornings from June through October.

A Fiber Fest — 10 hours of art, culture and entertainment — was held in 2015 in downtown Alliance. It was the eighth year for the event in the city, but the first held in the downtown district.

GLAMORGAN CASTLE — Built in 1904 by Col. William Henry Morgan, Glamorgan Castle is one of Alliance’s most well-known landmarks. Tours, given by the Castle Crusaders, are offered to the public and highlight rooms decorated in Italian Renaissance, French Empire, Louis XV, Elizabethan and Japanese styles. Named after the birthplace of Morgan’s father, Glamorgan County in Wales, the Castle sits on 50 acres with 110 tons of structural steel and 96 train car loads of Vermont marble. HAINES HOUSE — The Alliance Area Preservation Society maintains the Haines House, an Underground Railroad site located in Alliance. The house, owned by Jonathan Ridgeway Haines and Sarah Grant Haines, provided a safe haven for fugitive slaves but also served as a meeting place for many abolitionist gatherings. A well-documented young people’s meeting was held there in 1859 along with several other abolitionist conventions throughout the 1860s.

The preservation society offers tours to visitors who will see a traditional 1800s home, a refuge area where slaves were hidden and several period toys, including a doll that was used to signal danger to escaping slaves. The Haines House is located at 186 W. Market St. Call 330-829-4668.

MABEL HARTZELL HISTORIC HOME – The Mabel Hartzell Historic Home was the home of Mabel Hartzell, a significant woman in Alliance who helped to found the Alliance Historical Society. Hartzell bequeathed her home and its contents to the society to be maintained as a museum for future generations. The Victorian-style home offers a glimpse of life in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the society has many more photographs, documents and artifacts in its collection that is house in Rodman Public Library and online at www.alliancememory.org. In addition to founding the historical society, Hartzell also founded Alliance’s chapter of the American Red Cross and the Alliance Woman’s Club. For a community its size, Alliance has much to offer its residents in the way of parks.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Lands maintains 220 acres of parklands at more than 20 different sites, ranging from small neighborhood green spaces, to several miniparks, to the 60-acre Butler-Rodman Park and Silver Park, which is considered the crown jewel of the Alliance park system.

The newest attraction at the Alliance facilities, however, is an $88,000 amphitheater that was erected in 2015 at Maple Beach Park, located at 1295 Reed St. The pavilionstyle structure features indoor and outdoor seating with a wooded area as the backdrop.

Maple Beach, which also features basketball courts, is one of six main parks in the system that also includes Earley’s Hill Park, located at 122 E. Vine St., which is a popular spot in the summer for baseball and softball games.

Thompson-Snodgrass Park, located at 748 E. Cambridge

St., is one of the more unique destinations in the parks system due to its brightly colored murals. The location, which also features a large pavilion and playground equipment, is the site each summer of a large basketball tournament.

Memorial Park, located at 746 E. State St., offers two of the more unique attractions the Alliance parks have to offer — a disc golf course and a skate park — in addition to basketball courts and picnic areas.

Butler-Rodman Park, located at 2295 W. State St., features many shelters and playground equipment scattered around several baseball fields that host Hot Stove League state tournament baseball games each summer.

Meanwhile, Silver Park, located at 2930 S. Union Ave., is the site of many activities throughout the year, including the city’s Fourth of July celebration, youth fishing tournaments at Kidwell Lake which is also home to many ducks, and Days in the Park, held in conjunction with the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival.

Silver Park offers visitors playgrounds, several shelters for meetings and reunions, including a log cabin, and baseball and softball fields, and basketball and tennis courts.

The Friends of Alliance Parks is a key supporter of the parks system, donating both time and money to special projects and programs, such as an annual Easter egg hunt at Butler-Rodman Park and a fall festival at Silver Park.

The Robertson Community Center also provides area residents and visitors to Alliance with recreation opportunities in the summer. The complex, located at 1005 E. State St., includes a heated swimming pool, a children’s spray park, a clubhouse for parties of up to 250 people, a basketball court and two volleyball courts. Hospital officials have become increasingly sensitive to educating the public about wellness and preventative care as a means of creating a healthy community. However, when the need arises, ACH takes great pride in being able to treat and, if necessary, refer patients for excellent health treatment plans.

To attain that goal, the university offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in physician assistant studies and educational leadership. The university is also planning a Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

The average class size is 19 with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1. Nearly 90 percent of Mount Union’s faculty has attained a doctorate or terminal degree.

Mount Union also provides more than 80 student organizations, including four fraternities and four sororities, honor societies and service organizations, intramural sports and even a student-run radio station, in which students can grow academically, socially and professionally.

Athletically, Mount Union offers 11 men’s sports and 10 women’s sports that compete as the Purple Raiders in Division III of the NCAA, wearing the colors purple and white.

The institution has a long tradition of excellence in sports and is best known in the sporting world for having won a record 11 national titles in football.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, the university had 2,094 undergraduate students and 97 graduate students of which 50 percent were male and 50 percent were female, according to its website. Those students represent 29 states and 17 countries. Approximately 13 percent of the student population were American students of color and 3 percent were international students.

Over the past decade, the institution has invested more than $100 million in upgrading the facilities on its 123-acre campus. Most of the buildings on campus are new or newly renovated, including a natural sciences building, health and medical sciences building, performing arts center, recreation center, welcome center and apartment-style housing options.

In addition to the main campus, the university also owns and operates a 162-acre nature center, located a few miles from campus.

For its efforts, Mount Union is ranked among the top educational institutions in the country.

In fact, 2015 marked the 25th straight year the university was mentioned as a top college by U.S. News and World Report, which ranked Mount Union eighth among Midwest Regional Colleges Mount Union was also recognized among

STARK STATE COLLEGE

Stark State College found a permanent home for its Alliance branch in 2015.

The Canton-based institution took up residence in a new 10,000-square-foot building at 1725 S. Arch Ave., behind Alliance Community Hospital. Stark State rents the space from the hospital.

In the past, Stark State had rented space in different locations and utilized lab space at Alliance High School in order to have a presence in Alliance. The new state-of-theart facility, complete with several classrooms, two computer labs, a chemistry lab and Wi-Fi throughout, gives the college the opportunity to host all of its classes under one roof.

With the new building, Stark State College is able to offer more classes in Alliance, providing convenience to area students.

It will also allow for growth of existing programs, such as a nursing program in which it partners with Alliance Community Hospital, as well as a dual-credit STEM Academy it offers to area high school students, who can take collegelevel chemistry and physics classes that is funded by the schools.

Stark State College offers more than 230 associate degrees, options, one-year and career enhancement certificates in business and entrepreneurial studies, education, engineering technologies, health and human services, information technologies, liberal arts, mathematics and sciences.

For the community, Mount Union offers LINC (Lunch, Information, Networking and Conversation) sessions once a month in which university faculty share their expertise on an interesting topic as well as Continued Learning Program sessions once a week in which speakers offer a variety of presentations and current perspectives.

Mount Union also hosts several lectures throughout the year, including the Schooler Lecture in the spring which features a high-profile speaker. Past speakers included President Gerald R. Ford, Carl Sagan, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Henry Kissinger and Sandra Day O’Connor just to name a few.

PUBLIC LIBRARY odman Public Library is much more than a building full of books.

For Alliance-area residents it is also a valuable resource as a place to gain knowledge, do research, learn new skills, be exposed to new ideas and even be entertained and gather with friends.

The library, which was built in 1961 through the support of Clarence J. “Bill” Rodman, is guided by a seven-member board that is assisted by the Friends of Rodman Public Library, a volunteer group which helps to publicize the library’s resources and services, encourages gifts and endowments and holds fundraisers such as a four-day used book sale during the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival each year.

Both the main library, located at the intersection of Arch Avenue and Broadway Street, and its branch, located inside the Marketplace Plaza on West State Street, are staffed by friendly and helpful librarians that go above and beyond to help patrons do everything from finding a book to learning a new computer skill.

Rodman Public Library caters to everyone from the young to the old and even to those who can’t travel to the library through its bookmobile.

For the very young, RPL offers Wee Read (birth to age 2) and Storytime (ages 3-5), two programs aimed at helping young minds learn early skills and become lifelong readers.

The library, which hosts special parties for children throughout the year, also offers Advanced Workstations in Education Early Literacy Stations loaded with more than 60 educational software programs for children 2-8.

Young patrons can even call (330) 821-TELL to hear a new story every month, a service called Dial-a-Story that is sponsored by the Alliance Kiwanis Club.

As children get older, they can join various book clubs, one just for girls and one just for boys, as well as attend special programs that feature information and hands-on learning about various topics of interest.

For teens, Rodman Public Library opened a Teen Spot in 2015 where patrons between 12 and 18 can gather to socialize, get homework help, attend various programs and even play video games on selected dates in the main auditorium. An anime club also meets at the library and screenings of films are held periodically.

For adults, the RPL offers the traditional services of a library as well as the use of public computers, a public fax, a Simple Scan Document Center and a public notary.

The reference department even has a Text-a-Librarian service in which patrons can text a question to (330) 3568133 and they will receive an answer text on their phone.

Patrons can check out Braille books, books on CD, music CDs and DVD movies as well as obtain voter registration and tax forms.

They can also attend computer classes held throughout the year as well as programs on topics such as local history, music, art and science and special appearances by authors.

And, of course, the library is a strong supporter of One Book One Community, a yearly program in which participating area residents read the same book and hold various discussions, seminars and lectures related to the book throughout the year. The project culminates with the author visiting Alliance and speaking about his work.

Rodman Public Library is also home to Writers’ Alliance, a writers group that meets monthly, and the KnitWits needlework circle, which also hosts classes on knitting and crocheting.

For those unable to travel, RPL patrons can log on to the Ohio eBook project and Zinio, on their iPads, computers and smartphones from their homes, giving them access to books, magazines and music.

They can also utilize the services of the RPL bookmobile, which makes regular scheduled stops on a two-week rotation, or a home delivery service.

n recent years, the Marlington Local School District has positioned itself to provide new and exciting opportunities to students across all grade levels.

With a renewed focus on technology, Marlington has provided all three of its elementary buildings with iPads, allowing students to learn through various educational apps. The district’s elementary schools have been using 1-to-1 technology for students in grades two through five in social studies and science and classrooms are equipped with smart boards.

The district created a community-wide fundraiser this past May with the Duke 5K Melee and Obstacle Challenge Fundraiser. Featuring a fun run, normal 5K race and an extreme 5K obstacle challenge and mud run, proceeds benefit the Marlington Local Schools Technology Fund.

At the middle school, iPads have been provided for more 1-to-1 technology upgrades, providing a way to integrate online content with traditional classroom activities and provide digital content that is engaging and challenging. In addition to iPads, the middle school has also implemented the Gateway to Technology program — part of Project Lead the Way — as a opportunity to engage students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and prepare them for advanced courses in high school. Students can take courses in design and modeling, automation and robotics.

At the high school level, students have the opportunity to study in the Project Lead the Way engineering program as part of the district’s career technical education program. Courses include Introduction to Engineering Design,

Principles of Engineering and Robotics.

The high school is also undergoing renovations, which will be completed by the 2016-2017 school year in preparation for expanded career programming. These renovations will include an engineering classroom and fabrication lab, thanks to a generous $100,000 grant from the Greater Alliance Foundation. Other projects completed this school year include the construction of an additional landscaping building, renovation of the bus garage, and updates in lighting, rooftop HVAC units and control systems around the district as part of the HB 264 Energy Conservation Plan.

The newly created Dukes Digital Academy offers an educational opportunity for students who need a nontraditional environment for success. Still considered as Marlington students, they will be given an alternate path to graduation with flexible scheduling and personalized learning that will fit their needs.

Marlington High School is also excited to offer College Credit Plus, a new program that allows students to earn free college credit while they’re still in high school. Participating students are enrolled in both college and the high school while they earn college and high school credit once they successfully complete the course.

Located at 2121 Reno Drive N.E. in Louisville, St. Thomas Aquinas recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The school opened in 1964 as a co-institutional school with the girl’s division staffed by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Mary Immaculate and the boy’s division staffed by the Brothers of Christian Instruction.

In 1970, the school became co-educational. It is one of two Catholic high schools in Stark County. Although Catholic in orientation, St. Thomas Aquinas is open to students of all faiths and backgrounds, including students with special needs.

Rev. Thomas Dyer is the president and CEO, Joseph Vagedes is the high school principal and COO and Dr. Lynette Angeloni is the middle school principal. More than 70 percent of the school’s faculty possesses a master’s degree or higher and there is a 16:1 student-teacher ratio.

There is a 100 percent graduation rate with 96 percent of the students matriculating to colleges and universities in Ohio and across the country and 4 percent joining the military and work force. Members of the Class of 2015 earned $7.6 million in college scholarships awarded over a four-year period.

Students have the opportunity to study in a 21st century learning environment. The newly renovated science labs allow students to explore engineering and the sciences in

the newly created Center for Science Exploration. Twentytwo honors courses and six AP courses are offered. College Credit Plus is offered with the collaboration of Walsh University and Stark State College.

The students have the opportunity for extracurricular involvement with over 40 clubs and athletic activities. There is an active student body with 82 percent of the students participating in athletics and 57 percent playing multiple sports.

In 2014, St. Thomas Aquinas opened a middle school in the in the east wing (Holy Cross Hall) of the building to meet the needs of middle school students in the area. Dr. Lynette Angeloni is the middle school principal and a member of the school administrative team. There are 109 middle school students. These students have the opportunity to take high school-level classes in math, science, English language arts and foreign language.

STA also offers tuition assistance, including academic and memorial scholarships, need-based grants, and workstudy opportunities. Eighty percent of the students receive some financial assistance.

A student at Aquinas becomes fully engaged in mind, body and spirit with the goal of fully reaching their potential. Students at STA are encouraged to develop a strong sense of social justice by collaborating with the community completing over 75 hours of service during high school.

Aquinas has an active alumni group of over 6,000 members. They are business owners, National Merit Scholars, judges and lawyers, physicians, engineers, actors, musicians, teachers and leaders all over the world.

A graduate of Aquinas is a mature Christian who lives a life of faith and service and who like Saint Thomas Aquinas, finds Christ in and brings Christ to the people with whom he lives, works and serves. community Foundation, by definition, is an independent tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people of a local area.

The Greater Alliance Foundation builds permanent funds through gifts of assets contributed by many donors in the community. From these funds, the Greater Alliance Foundation awards grants and works with community stakeholders to address a wide variety of current and long-term needs in the greater Alliance area.

Over the past 16 years, the Greater Alliance trustees have approved more than $6 million in grants to help nonprofits succeed with a variety of capital needs to improve the quality of life in our community.

In addition, to help meet the capital needs in the community, the foundation has launched several initiatives to improve the welfare of area residents. Those are the three goals of Alliance Area Development, a catalyst for business success in Alliance since its founding in 1999.

“Our main focus is on retention and expansion of existing business,” said AAD President Tom Pukys, CEcD. “Eighty to 90 percent of economic growth comes from existing business. That’s where most new jobs come from. And existing business is the lifeline of local economy. However, we do go out and sell the community in order to attract new businesses as well.”

In a two-year period from 2014 through 2015, the Carnation City grew with investment of more than $50 million in three main sectors.

An estimated $15 million capital investment in the retail sector created and retained 275 jobs through the development of the Mount Union Gateway Plaza, which established six new businesses; the redevelopment of a site that formerly housed a trucking company, which created two new businesses and relocated another; and the building of two new stores, including a Starbucks and a second GetGo outlet in town.

With an estimated $10 million capital investment in the manufacturing sector, at least 750 new jobs were created across 20 companies and MAC Trailer, the world’s largest manufacturer of custom trailers, expanded to a second location in Alliance.

An estimated $30 million in capital was invested in education, which helped fund the Giese Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Mount Union, as well as a new Stark State satellite in Alliance.

“It’s really exciting to see this growth, said Pukys. “And it’s fun to be a part of the process.”

What makes AAD unique is the way it functions as a collaboration between both private and public entities and by providing information on available resources.

“I describe it as a private-public partnership that is really driven by the private sector,” explained Pukys, noting that a 43-member board consisting of representatives of industry, local government, health care, business and education guide the AAD’s endeavors.

“What makes us successful is that collaboration,” said Pukys. “All the major stakeholders are represented and they

work together. Collaboration breeds success.”

Pukys also noted that most of the big industrial companies in Alliance are locally owned, including MAC Trailer, Robertson Heating Supply, Coastal Pet Products, Winkle Industries and Morgan Engineering among many others.

“We have engaged owner-

ship who care about the community because this is where they live,” explained Pukys. “And we have a diverse economy and workforce in which we have companies that operate in steel, distribution, plastics, etc.

If one tails off, others help keep the economy well-balanced.”

All that leads Pukys to believe Alliance has a bright future.

“Things are looking good for Alliance,” said Pukys. “We have a lot of positives going for us.”

Those positives have been highlighted by the “Alliance, Ohio, Make it Yours” marketing campaign, encouraging local people to share their positive stories about the Carnation City.

“There’s no better way to get reenergized about what we have going for us or to show everyone else what we have then by telling our stories,” explained Pukys, noting the campaign is entering its second year. “It really has created that spark that we needed to be reminded of what we have and what we can become.”

Pukys, who chairs Early Childhood Education Alliance, also serves with the Alliance Rotary, Junior Achievement, and Alliance for Children and Families. He also chairs Technology Accelerator Alliance (TA2), a collaboration between AAD, the city and the University of Mount Union that serves as an incubator program to assist technology companies in locating to the Alliance area.

“That is still plugging away as well,” said Pukys, “It’s great to be a small part of this process in helping Alliance prosper and grow.” n

Summer Fest – Kicking off in mid-summer annually, Alliance Summer Fest is held at College Plaza on State Street.

It features carnival rides, food vendors, musical entertainment and the popular Carnation Idol singing contest, and is free and open to the public.

Downtown Summer Concert Series – During the summer months, Alliance locals gather at the red caboose on Friday nights to hear a series of free concerts as part of the Downtown Summer Concert Series. Located on the corner of Main Street and Mechanic Avenue, the red caboose’s stage lights up for a variety of musical entertainment, from class rock to country, funk and Motown.

Alliance Farmers’ Market – This Alliance Farmers’ Market offers vendors of locally grown produce, homemade baked goods and other homemade items in the Caboose parking lot at the corner of Main Street and Mechanic Avenue on Saturday mornings between mid-June and mid-October. The market, which hosts educational programs, demonstrations and local musicians, is sponsored by the University of Mount Union, Alliance Community Hospital, The Alliance Review and WDPN Radio. Fourth of July Festival – Alliance celebrates the Fourth of July in a big way each year. The annual festivities held at Silver Park culminate with a display of fireworks at dusk. The spectacular show is sponsored by local businesses. Each year a theme is chosen and several events are inspired by the patriotic premise. Musical entertainment, concessions,

kids amusements and Greater Alliance Carnation Festival queen candidate introductions make it a memorable annual event to honor the red, white and blue.

The Greater Alliance Carnation Festival – The Greater Alliance Carnation Festival brings the community together to celebrate the scarlet carnation, which gave Alliance its nickname, the Carnation City. The festival has many events that involve the community’s citizens, businesses and dignitaries, bringing the city together to celebrate all that is great about the Carnation City. Began in 1960, the Carnation Festival is a favorite among locals. Area businesses sponsor the events and keep the festival running each year. Running approximately two weeks in August, the festival begins with the Kickoff Parade and finishes with a spectacular display of fireworks at Silver Park. The park is the central location for many of the festival’s events, including Days in the Park, a three-day event that features booths by local organizations, crafters and food vendors. A balloon lift-off, which brings dozens of hot air ballonists to Alliance, departs from Silver Park during the festival.

Several local bands and musical groups provide entertainment on the Silver Park stage, including the Alliance Symphony Orchestra. A pet show allows area children to show off their animal friends to the community. Another popular event during the Carnation Festival is the Rib Fest, held in the Carnation City Mall parking lot, which brings food vendors from far and wide. Each day, local bands perform for the crowd.

Perhaps the crowning jewel of the Carnation Festival, the annual Queen Pageant is held on the first Sunday of the festival.

Locals participate in contests during the festival, including an amateur photography contest, a flower show, a youth sports event and a vintage base ball tournament, where the Alliance Crossing Rails compete against other vintage base ball teams at Glamorgan Castle. Babies born at Alliance Community Hospital during the days of the festival are dubbed Carnation Babies and are given gift bags filled with gifts.

Other events, ranging from parades and ice cream socials to a Pump-In and Muster, are also popular. Visits to some of Alliance’s most unique landmarks, ranging from Glamorgan Castle to Alliance City Cemetery, and Rodman Public Library’s Used Book Sale are also Carnation Festival favorites.

One Book, One Community — Each year, a selection committee chooses a book that participating area residents read and then hold various discussions, seminars and lectures related to that book. The project culminates with the author visiting Alliance and speaking about his work. n
