tarting a new career can be the most exciting and challenging part of a person’s life. As a recent graduate of The Ohio State University, I am beginning a new and exciting chapter in my life as editor of Amish Heartland. Former editor, Katherine Ryder, will be moving to Quincy, Ill. with her new husband Brendan who has recently accepted the sports information director position at Quincy University. She hopes to continue her education with a masters in business administration. I graduated from Ohio State’s college of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences with a degree in agriculture communication and am returning to my home of Wayne County. If you would have told me ﬁve years ago that I would one day be editor of any magazine, I would not have believed you. But I could not be happier with the path I have chosen to follow. After spending a year in the big city, I have come to appreciate my small town roots. I am very blessed to have a supportive family to welcome me back home. I hope to reconnect with old friends, make new friends and continue to grow my social network. Growing up in Wayne County, I am familiar with the Amish culture but I am very interested in learning even more. Coming from an agricultural background, I am interested in learning about their farming practices and spotlighting their importance in our rural society. With that being said, I am also always interested in hearing what the readers are interested in. Your ideas are always appreciated as I am hoping this magazine will serve as a great resource for you as you navigate your way around The Heartland. As you read through this months issue you will read about harvest time in the heartland, a musical drama about a young Amish woman seeking the truth about her birth mother and discover a cozy place to stay when visitng Amish country. The challenge I face now is to continue to bring you the best stories of the Amish heritage. I am more than ready to accept this challenge as I embark on this new journey in my life. One of my favorite country singers, John Michael Montgomery, once sang “life’s a dance, you learn as you go” and I truly believe I will be learning more and more about who I am and how I can grow.

That fall David and Dorothy Kauffman also started selling pumpkins and they realized that by displaying their items roadside, accessible to people as they drove by, that they could get them to stop. “Over the years we just grew,” Dorothy said. “We kept adding 6

different things each year.” The Kauffmans noticed that it was their niche, something that made them unique to the public passing by. Customers were drawn into the business because they could see exactly what was offered to them. Kauffman Lawn Furniture provides an expansive product line, offering just about anything someone might need for their outdoor space. Their largest selections include: swings, gliders, picnic tables, gym sets, storage barns, gazebos, log cabins, bridges, bird feeders, baskets, AMISH HEARTLAND

children’s furniture, rocking horses, light houses, hickory furniture and hunting blinds. “Our patio sets and our gliders are our top sellers,” Dorothy said. “Although poly furniture is becoming very popular too.” Future goals for the business include getting children involved when families visit. Kauffman Lawn Furniture carries different options of backyard play sets, but they are also looking into increasing their line of children’s furniture. “Our oldest son is making furniture right now,” Dorothy said. “Our full time goal is keeping our customers satisﬁed and maintaining that. According to David, Kauffman Lawn Furniture receives a lot of referrals from local businesses, “A lot of the time they say if we don’t have it, nobody does.” Apart from the products that are displayed in front of Kauffman Lawn Furniture, the business also has a much larger catalogue with even more options for their customers. The business also accepts custom orders and David is willing to provide items that customers come up with. “We can do almost anything,” David said. Priorities for Kauffman Lawn Furniture are its quality and price. “We try to keep a fair price on our products,” Dorothy

said. “We discount on our discontinued items.” Dorothy also acknowledges and takes pride in the fact that the entire Kauffman family is involved with the operations of the business, including four children and two children-inlaw. “Our main goal is always to do whatever we can to make sure the customer is happy with what they have,” Dorothy said. “We stand

or those who have read “The Confession,” written by Beverly Lewis, the musical performed at the Carlisle Inn in Sugarcreek was nothing short of the same, inspiring tale. A dramatic, entertaining story of a young woman seeking to find her birth mother is even more captivating considering she was born and raised in an Old Order Amish community. Katie Lapp (played by Mary Elise Jones) discovers her adopted mother’s secret one day when she crosses a satin infant’s dress, embroidered with the name ‘Katherine Mayfield.’ Once Lapp confronts her mother, Rebecca (played by Kristina Miranda Sloan), and understands the truth about her past, Katie decides to seek out her birth mother and discover who she really is. In the process Katie is told by her Amish father, Samuel Lapp (played by Adam Lowe), that if she decides to leave the community and seek out her birth mother he will have no choice but to report her to the bishop. Torn, Katie believes this is something she has to do and because of it is shunned by her Amish community. Leaving heartbroken family and friends behind, Katherine Mayfield steps into a world completely different than the one she’s accustomed to on a desperate search to find the woman who gave her up. For the remainder of the play we follow Katherine to the front door of her birth mother’s house, Laura Mayfield (played by Jennifer Wolcott), where in the confusion she is assumed to be new hired help for the estate. In the meantime, Laura’s husband, Dylan Bennet (played by Derek Brookens), has hired an actress from New York to make Laura believe that she is her long-lost daughter as she is to inherit all of Laura’s belongings once she passes. When suspicions arise regarding the actress’ credibility, Dylan vanishes. Shortly after, Alyson Cairns (played by Meredith Kochan), realizes that she can’t follow through with their original plan and disappears as well. As Laura’s condition worsens she worries that she’ll never find her real daughter. This dramatic and energized story of a young woman finding her way strikes a place in the hearts of the audience members. It’s a universal experience – that of the struggle we have as we try to make our mistakes right, and in the process discover who we are. “The Confession” continued on page 42 12

Blessings Lodge creating a memorable stay

“A great stay and wonderful retreat.” “Spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable.” “A true blessing.” These are just a few of the many great reviews the Blessings Lodge and Simple Blessings Cabin, located in Berlin, Ohio, has received on www.bedandbreakfast.com. Owners Mark and Brenda Zimmerman feel the lodge has been a true Blessing to them and they hope that others will have that same feeling when they experience the lodge themselves. “Doing something to help others is a great feeling,” said Mark.

How did Blessings get its start? I spoke with Mark Zimmerman who told me how the Blessings Lodge came to be. Mark and his wife Brenda were enjoying a family vacation one weekend when Brenda explained to her husband how she would like to visit Amish country. Having never been there before, Mark was intrigued by his wife’s sudden interest in visiting the heartland. After just one trip to the Amish countryside they were hooked. “We fell in love with the area,” said Mark. 32

Mark and Brenda soon decided that they wanted to become a part of the community and decided to start their own business. Mark told his wife “you need to invest where your heart is.” When they came across the lodge building, tucked just off the main drive through downtown Berlin, they new they had found a real treasure.

Success in the Amish Community

When guests leave Blessings, Mark feels great knowing his guests have left feeling good about their stay. “It feels great knowing that we have touched their lives in some way,” said Mark. The lodge becomes more than just a place to crash at the end of a long day of shopping or site seeing. “We want to feel like we’ve created a memory for you.”

Staying at the lodge or cabin is like having your own home away from home Mark explains.“We want it to feel like your place.” Upon arriving at the Blessings Lodge, I found it interesting that there is no place for check-in or main desk area you would expect to find at most bed and breakfasts or lodging areas. Mark explained to me that all the arrangements are made ahead of time by phone. Guests receive a special code once they have booked a room and are free to come and go as they please. Mark says this is just another way to make guests feel like they are driving to a space that belongs to them for the time they are visiting. Harvest in the Heartland BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

raveling through the gently rolling hills and winding roads of Amish country, you find yourself becoming more and more relaxed as you take in the countryside. Neat stacks of straw are spotted throughout the fields and fresh picked produce is being sold in stands along the roadside. It is harvest time in the heartland, only you will not see big green combines and red tractors harvesting crops in these fields. It almost feels as if you have been sucked into a time warp to a simpler way of life, where horse and buggy is the only form of transportation and plows and harvesters are pulled through the fields by horsepower. In the Amish culture, “everything is farmed with horses and horse drawn equipment,” said Aden Yoder of Green Field Farms in Wooster, Ohio. Vegetables are picked by hand while small horse-drawn binders are used for harvesting crops such as corn and wheat. Green Field Farms is an Amish farmer-owned cooperative that sells products such as vegetables, eggs, cheese, and maple products. The cooperative is designed to serve the Amish farmers. Produce 36

is harvested and packaged by the Amish farms and picked up by the cooperative. This way “the Amish can continue to farm and stay on their farms,” said Yoder. Anna Miller of P.M. produce, located in Millersburg, Ohio, describes the harvest of their fresh produce. Smaller vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and red beets

are picked by hand and carried through the rows in buckets. Larger produce such as cabbages and melons are also picked by hand and loaded into bins on the back of a wagon hitched to a team of two horses. While the wagon makes its way down the rows, two to three Amish farmers pick the melons and cabbages and pass them down

in assembly line fashion and place them into the bins. It is teamwork at its ďŹ nest. Harvesting crops such as oats, wheat and corn involves using a horse powered grain binder. As the rows of crops pass through the binder, they are cut and bundled into sheaves. The sheaves are then stacked into shocks where they stay AMISH HEARTLAND

to dry for eight to 10 days. Once the crop has been properly dried it is hauled back to the farm to be put through the threshing machine. Miller describes this machine as a large machine powered by a tractor (one of the few instances where modern day technology is permitted on the farm) where a crop such as wheat is sent through the machine and is separated into grain and stalks of straw. The Amish also rely on tractor power to run the corn grinder and ďŹ ll their silos. The Amish understand that in order to be more efďŹ cient on their farms they cannot ignore all modern day technologies. Aiden Keim, general manager of Wholesome Valley Farms in Wilmot, Ohio, is adapting to the challenges of ever changing technology by implementing a steam powered tractor to harvest

their oats. Wholesome Valley Farms is dedicated to not only providing fresh organic produce but also teaching the public about the beneďŹ ts of consuming organic food. Wolcott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance from Taylor University and a Masters of Music in Opera and Musical Theatre from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Hannah Timm (Rosie Taylor) is from St. Marys, Pennsylvania and will be a senior Communications major/Music minor at Westminster College in the fall of 2012. This past fall, Timm placed 1st in Musical Theatre and 2nd in Classical music at the Tri-State Area NATS Competition. Timm was also just nominated for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for her performance as Rosalind (As You Like It). Jim France (Fulton Taylor) spent most of his life in the hospitality industry, speciﬁcally hotels and resorts, working in major properties in the United States, Canada, Norway, England, Switzerland, Germany and France. Jim originated the role of Fulton Taylor in Indiana in 2010 and this summer will be his fourth season playing it, this time “in the round.” Derek Brookens (Dylan Bennet) escaped from Port Allegany, Pa., and is thrilled to be a part of this summer’s cast! In the fall, Brookens will be returning to Ohio Northern University for his senior year as a Muscial Theatre major. Meredith Kochan (Alyson Cairns) is a senior Musical Theater major at Kent State University.
