Alliance

Welcome to the Carnation City — home of a top Ohio university, an exciting annual festival and a huge variety of cultural, recreational and educational facilities. Alliance, located in the northeast corner of Stark County, is on the cusp of Stark, Portage, Columbiana and Mahoning counties, which means it is only a stone’s throw away from several of the state’s centers, including Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Columbus and Youngstown.  At just over 22,000 residents, the Alliance area is served by the Alliance City School District and two local school districts in addition to private schools. Alliance is home to several unique cultural attractions including The Cat Fanciers’ Association, the World War History and Art Museum and Crandall Art Gallery. Visitors enjoy touring the many historical locations such as Alliance City Cemetery, Glamorgan Castle, the Mabel Hartzell Historical Home and the Haines House, an Underground Railroad site. Several parks provide recreational opportunities for Alliance residents. Silver Park, a 53-acre city park, is a central point for many area events, including the annual Greater Alliance Carnation Festival. Other parks, including Butler-Rodman Park, Early Hill and Memorial Park, provide a variety of recreational opportunities, such as a skate park, sporting facilities and shelters. Alliance’s Department of Parks maintains 220 acres and 24 parks and parklands, from small neighborhood gardens to 60acre complexes. Carnation City Mall is a popular shopping destination for locals, providing a mixture of several retail shops. Downtown Alliance, which has begun regenerating as an eccentric arts district, is home to many unique thrift, antique and gift shops. Freedom Square and the red caboose are popular meeting points. What’s in a The town christened Alliance was formed in 1850 from the union of three villages — Williamsport, Freedom and Liberty. Because of the merging of the three unique villages, the town became known as Alliance, a word that means union or partnership. The village of Mount Union joined in 1889. Some believe that Alliance’s name came from “The Crossing,” a popular railroad intersection in the city. Two major railroad lines, the Ohio and Pennsylvania lines, crossed there. The name could reflect the merging of two lines. Alliance’s botanical nickname didn’t come around until 1959, when the Ohio Legislature recognized the city as the Carnation City. The scarlet carnation was chosen as Ohio’s state flower in 1904, as the cultivator of the red blossom was an Alliance native. Local doctor, horticulturist and politician Dr. Levi Lamborn propagated the flower from French seedlings in 1886. Later, he opposed future president William McKinley for a seat representing the 18th Congressional District. It is said that before each debate, Lamborn presented McKinley with a

boutonniere adorned with a scarlet carnation. McKinley began to refer to the flower as a good luck symbol and, as president, often wore a scarlet boutonniere and decorated his desk with scarlet, blossom-filled vases. On Sept. 6, 1901, just moments after removing the famous flower from his lapel, McKinley was greeting a line of people at an exposition in Buffalo, N.Y., when he was struck by an assassin’s bullet. Legend says that McKinley removed the carnation to give it to a young admirer. He died eight days later.

A letter from Mayor Andreani As we approach the second decade of this new millennium and look to our city’s future, it is good to reflect on the progress made over the past decade. The city has seen many new and revitalized institutions over the last 10 years. Those institutions include social, business, educational, religious, and financial entities that are making continuous efforts to grow and prosper. Most of this was done during a decade that saw major economic downturns, one of which was considered the worst since the Great Depression. As one looks back on the events of the past 10 years, it is evident that the Alliance community and its citizens demonstrate a resilience that has endured over the course of the city’s history. Alliance is at the center of the Eastern Stark County Region, providing goods and services as well as quality of life elements that attract people to our city from a regional perspective. I have seen statistics indicating that 40,000 people live within a five-mile radius of the center of Alliance. Being at the juncture of Stark, Columbiana, and Mahoning counties makes Alliance the center of commerce for the region. The business community has led the way from Alliance Castings, a major manufacturing industry that has weathered the difficult economy by re-opening twice in the last decade, to many new retail facilities. The most recent developments have included the Kohl’s Department Store, the Chipotle restaurant

and Aspen Dental. Soon to be added to the landscape on State Street will be new Panera Bread and Dairy Queen restaurants. This, when combined with earlier developments of Robertson Heating and Supply, Winkle Industries, Trilogy Plastics and Terry’s Tire Town establishing their businesses in the Industrial Park, make Alliance a viable business leader. The growth of these major businesses has been augmented by the continued prominence of numerous retail and consumer facilities, including Walmart, Lowe’s, Elder-Beerman, and J.C. Penney’s to mention a few. The educational community has seen continued growth as well. The leader has been the University of Mount Union. The University has grown, expanding its offerings to include graduate level studies in health care and education. It has recently begun a program in civil engineering and soon will add a nursing program to its offerings. It also has changed the landscape of the campus with new student housing, classroom buildings and major aesthetic improvements, all the while maintaining its tradition of academic excellence.

Also arriving on the educational scene has been Stark State College, providing additional education opportunities through its technical and career-oriented programs. The Alliance City Schools have completed their renovation and rebuilding projects and continue providing excellence in public education, including its adult education efforts with its Robert T. White School of Practical Nursing. The nearby Marlington, Sebring, and West Branch school systems all provide the greater Alliance community with excellence in primary and secondary education for our citizens. Each area of the city has experienced a growing revitalization. On the north side, the historic downtown area has seen the development of the international headquarters of the Cat Fanciers’ Association and its associated CFA Foundation. The Alliance Farmers’ Market has been a tremendous success, as has the Downtown Summer Concert Series. Arts in Stark has chosen downtown Alliance as a focus for renewal over the next decade in the areas of arts, culture, entertainment and retail. The renovated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge stands out as a major connector and tribute to Dr. King. The future is bright for the renaissance of the downtown region. The east side has seen the re-emergence of industry with the previously mentioned Alliance Castings as well as the growth of Morgan Engineering. The east side also has seen the revitalization of retail and quality of life establishments. From The College Plaza, where one can find new retail, to the World War History and Art Museum, a world class facility dedicated to preserving memorabilia created by soldiers that endured the World Wars. Memorial Park on the east side also has experienced renewed energy with the addition of the Skate Park and the potential site for the 9/11 Memorial, a moving display of artifacts from the World Trade Center. The west side has experienced the retail and commercial growth along State Street and Sawburg Avenue, adding many

new businesses providing much needed goods and services to the community. The west side also is home to the Industrial Park, where both current and new businesses have chosen to grow, building new facilities for their companies. The south side has seen new growth and expansion of residential neighborhoods. With the creation of new and desirable homes, this expansion has created a foundation for the revitalization of the housing market in Alliance. Also found on the south side is the city treasure of Silver Park, as well as the new Alliance Middle School on the gateway to Alliance from the south. We need to thank the many citizens that brought us to this point in history. From my predecessor Mayor Toni Middleton and the Alliance Chamber of Commerce to the Alliance Area Development Foundation and many civic groups, boards, commissions, and a host of dedicated volunteers. We need to build on the foundation provided for us, and I call on the Alliance community to continue progress, as we have in the past. We will do this by working together, as the namesake of our city implies, “Alliance,” the coming together of the people and the community to reach new heights.

ose-colored past History plays an important role in the Alliance we know today. The town, which was formed from the union of several small villages, traces its history back to 1850. Hundreds of years before that, though, the land in which the town sits was occupied by Hopewell Native Americans, a group of indigenous peoples that flourished all over the northeastern United States. They are famous for their mysterious mounds, craft work and pottery. A great way to unearth the town’s history is to take a tour of Alliance City Cemetery. The grounds, located on Vine Street, are the resting place of several significant Alliance natives. In fact, local cemetery historian John Gross uses a popular phrase to excite tour-goers. “If you really want to know your community, start at the cemetery,� he often says. Alliance natives J. Ridgeway Haines, World War I Col. Charles C. Weybrecht and scarlet carnation cultivator Levi Lamborn’s parents are all buried there. Haines, whose estate is now a historical site open to the public, was an active abolitionist who transformed his home into an Underground Railroad site in the 1800s. The property is now open for weekend tours. Other important natives, such as Col. William Henry Morgan, the president and owner of Morgan Engineering Co., still have a presence in the Alliance community. Morgan was the builder of Glamorgan Castle, an estate built on a 50-acre plot of land in Alliance. In its heyday, the Castle had bowling alleys, a billiard room and a large swimming pool in the basement. It was built from 100 tons of structural steel and 96 train car loads of Vermont marble. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the venue for many local events. Now, it houses the central administrative offices for Alliance City Schools. Still, the Castle is open for tours, coordinated by the Castle Crusaders. Though Alliance’s history began long ago, its heritage is palpable around town, from city streets (Glamorgan Street, Union Avenue, etc.) to the annual Carnation Festival.

Glamorgan Castle:

An enchanted attraction in the heart of the city

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places, Glamorgan Castle was commissioned by Col. William Henry Morgan, the president and owner of Morgan Engineering Company. The Castle was named after Morgan’s father’s birthplace, Glamorgan County, in Wales, U.K. The building took five years to build and was completed in 1909 at a total cost of $400,000. The Castle, which sits on a 50-acre plot of land, was built with 100 tons of structural steel and 96 train car loads of Vermont marble. The interior of the house is decorated in various styles such as Italian Renaissance, French Empire, Louis XV, Elizabethan and Japanese. The lavish Castle featured bowling alleys, a billiards room and a swimming pool. The Castle is the original design of architect Willard Hirsh and has a unique style not mimicking any other castle in the world. Hirsh also designed other local buildings including First Presbyterian Church, the Frank Dussel Home and the Oliver F. Transue home. Museums and historical sites • Alliance City Cemetery — Alliance City Cemetery is a perfect place to learn Alliance’s buried history. Tours are given by cemetery historian John Gross, who focuses on cemetery architecture, burial customs and the great tales of the people who developed the city of Alliance. • Glamorgan Castle — Built in 1904 by Col. William Henry Morgan, Glamorgan Castle is one of Alliance’s most well-known landmarks. Cultural sites and the arts • Alliance Symphony Orchestra — For over twenty years, the Alliance Symphony Orchestra has been uniting area musicians to perform both classical and contemporary compositions for the community. • Alliance Youthful Chamber Orchestra — The multi-generational Alliance Youthful Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1992, was originally known as the Youth Chamber Orchestra. The Haines House, a significant point on the Underground Railroad

The Haines House, an Underground Railroad site in Alliance, is maintained by the Alliance Area Preservation Society. The house, owned by Jonathan Ridgeway Haines and Sarah Grant Haines, served as a site along the Underground Railroad beginning in 1853. The couple were Quaker farmers and active abolitionists who sought to aid fugitive slaves on their journey from the South. The house was a safe haven for slaves but also served as a meeting place for many abolitionist gatherings. A well-documented young people’s meeting was held there in 1859 along with several other abolitionist conventions throughout the 1860s. Read up on Rodman Public Library Rodman Public Library serves Alliance’s 22,000 citizens with two branches, one in downtown Alliance and one in Carnation City Mall. Now in its 111th year, Rodman is a great resource for educational services and offers many computer classes, free computer and Internet access and databases of magazines, newspapers and of course, thousands of books. The computer classes, which are free, begin each fall and spring. Courses include basic classes on computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel, security and maintenance practices for computers, or advanced classes such as Web design. Classes are held in the library’s computer lab and taught by members of the library staff. Free public computer access is available at the library via computers in the Adult and Children’s Department and at the Carnation City Mall branch. Fax and wireless Internet services are available as well. The Children’s Department offers weekly programs for children. Programs include Story Time for children ages 4 to 6 and a “Lap Sit� program for 2 and 3-year-olds. Along with these weekly programs, other events and programs are scheduled throughout the year, including the Children’s Summer Reading Program and the One Book One Community program. Homebound services are also offered through the library. Residents throughout the Alliance area are eligible for the homebound service if they cannot visit the library because of a physical disability, lack of transportation, long-term illness or recent surgery. Once a month, the Bookmobile staff will deliver

items to the patron’s home, whether private residence, assisted living facility or nursing home. In addition to books, patrons can request videos, CDs, magazines, or audio books on CD or tape by calling the library anytime throughout the month. Many of the library’s services are funded through the Friends of Rodman Public Library, a group of Alliance locals who raise funds for the library. Each year during the Greater Alliance Area Carnation Festival, the organization hosts a Used Book Sale at the main branch. Selling thousands of books each year, Friends of the Rodman Public Library is able to offer items from a dime to 25 cents. A particularly popular portion of the sale, the Buck a Bag event, allows shoppers to stuff a grocery-sized bag with items for $1. The library accepts donations for the sale year-round. Alliance Community Pantry The Alliance Community Pantry, which opened on Nov. 15, 2010, provides food to those less fortunate in the Alliance area. The pantry, located at 215 E. Market St. in Alliance, is a nonprofit organization. The pantry provides nonperishable food items, meats and frozen foods to locals who meet a certain criteria. While many of the food items come from the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, the pantry also accepts donations and encourages locals to volunteer. The local food pantry is an expansion of the former Alliance Kiwanis Club’s monthly food distribution program, the project of Dave Puterbaugh, who is also president of the pantry board. The pantry provides food four days a week for people living in Stark County within the 44601 ZIP code. First-time pantry visitors are required to complete

a registration form, provide a photo ID and have proof of residency. Proof of income is not required. The pantry is open from 4 to 7 p.m. on Mondays and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Thursday. Customers may shop as often as every two weeks. The pantry is closed on some holidays. Alliance welcomed the Feline Historical Museum to historic downtown Alliance in June 2011. The museum is operated in conjunction with the Cat Fanciers’ Association and occupies what was once the Midland-Buckeye Savings and Loan building on Main Street. The museum also houses the association’s headquarters, which moved to Alliance from Manasquan, N. J. in 2011. It is the largest cat museum in the United States, which makes it well worth a visit for the cat lover and the cat-curious museum-goer. CFA is an organization dating back to 1906. It is the world’s largest registry of pedigreed cats and hosts more than 450 feline competitions annually. The association’s headquarters occupy the upstairs portion of the building, and the museum, which is open to the public, inhabits the street level. Artifacts in the museum are rotated periodically and feature an incredible variety of cat-related relics and art, including paintings, sculptures, pottery and textiles. Calling all history buffs to College Plaza — Visit the World War History and Art Museum Upon its opening on May 27, 2011, the World War History and Art Museum had about 300 paintings and drawings on display created by World War I soldiers. That display is just one of many facets contributing to the allure of Alliance’s own war museum.            The collection, which is housed in East State Street’s College Plaza, is dedicated to preserving artifacts, relics and art from World War I and II. On display, along with veterans’ original art, are soldiers’ uniforms, newspaper archives, a display honoring the legacy of local veterans, war-era toy soldiers, an exhibit featuring women in the war, and photographs.            The museum is located at 1300 E. Fourth of July Festival — Alliance celebrates

the Fourth of July in a big way each year. The annual festivities held at Silver Park culminate with a display of fireworks at dusk. The spectacular show is sponsored by local businesses. Each year a theme is chosen and several events are inspired by the patriotic premise. Musical entertainment, concessions, kids’ amusements and Carnation Queen introductions make this a memorable annual event to honor the red, white and blue.

The Greater Alliance Area Carnation Festival — Honoring the red blossom

In its 54th year, the Greater Alliance Area Carnation Festival brings the community together to celebrate the flower that gave Alliance its name. The two-week-long festival has many events that involve the community’s citizens, businesses and dignitaries, bringing the city together to celebrate all that is great about the Carnation City. Having begun in 1960, the Carnation Festival is a favorite among locals. Area businesses sponsor the events and keep the festival running each year. Usually spanning 10 days in August, the festival begins

with the Kick-off Parade and finishes with a spectacular display of fireworks at Silver Park. The park is the central location for many of the festival’s events, including Days in the Park, a three-day event that features booths run by local organizations, crafters and food vendors. A Balloon Liftoff, which brings dozens of hot air ballooners to Alliance, departs from Silver Park during the festival. Several local bands and musical groups energize the bandstand and generate a crowd of dancers. The Alliance Symphony Orchestra performs in the evenings at Days in the Park, and a Pet Show allows Alliance’s youth to parade their pets. Another popular portion of the Carnation Festival is the Rib Fest, a gathering of many rib vendors from far and wide who sell countless rib varieties to foodies in the parking lot of Carnation City Mall. Local bands perform and children’s booths are set up. Perhaps the crowning jewel of the Carnation Festival, the annual Queen’s Pageant is held on the first Sunday of the festival. Dozens of local young women vie for the title of Carnation queen, an honor that grants them VIP access to all of the festival’s events, several hundred of dollars’ worth of prizes, and the honor of representing the Carnation City. Locals participate in contests during the weeks of the Carnation Festival, including an amateur photography contest, a flower show, a youth sports event and a vintage base ball tournament, where the Alliance Crossing Rails compete against other Vintage Base Ball teams at Glamorgan Castle. Babies born at Alliance Community Hospital during the days of the festival are dubbed Carnation Babies and are given gift bags filled with gifts. Other events, such as the Grand Parade, Ice Cream Socials, the Style Show, golf scrambles, a quilt show and two car shows, are popular events. Tours of the Mabel Hartzell Home, the Haines House, Glamorgan Castle and Alliance City Cemetery are given. Stark Parks — Stark Parks, the park district maintained

by Stark County, preserves a dozen area parks and sixteen trailheads. The parks surrounding Alliance, Deer Creek Reservoir, Walborn Reservoir and Molly Stark Park, provide a slew of parklands perfect for hiking, fishing and sightseeing. Molly Stark Park in Louisville was purchased in 2009 and is the site of a former hospital. The park offers picnic areas, hiking trails and open areas. Taste the natural splendor of the Alliance Farmers’ Market

2012 marks the fifth season for the Alliance Farmers’ Market, whose motto is “THE place to be on Saturday mornings.” Setting up shop in downtown Alliance on the corner of Main Street and Mechanic Avenue near the red caboose, the Alliance Farmers’ Market features locally grown produce, homemade baked goods, and other local items. Vegetables, fruits, meat, honey, baked goods, maple syrup, salsa, goat cheese, pet treats, plants and flowers are sold at the market, which is open from mid-June to mid-October each year. All booths are occupied by local vendors who pay a fee to participate. Established in 2008, a small group of Alliance locals conceived the idea for the market and made it possible by seeking sponsorship from the University of Mount Union, Alliance Community Hospital, The Alliance Review and WDPN Radio. Alliance Community Hospital is a nonprofit hospital that was founded in 1901. It is only one of two Planetree affiliates in Ohio, making it uniquely focused on patient care. Planetree is an internationally recognized organization that advocates patient-centered care and focuses on progressive technologies. ACH is licensed for 204 beds including 78 nursing home and transitional-care beds that are found in the attached long-term care facility, Community Care Center. ACH is fully accredited by The Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program and offers a medical staff of more than 150 active and covering physicians. ACH has centers in cardiopulmonary services, sleep disorders, digestive health and pain medicine as well as critical care and emergency services. It also specializes in long-term, outpatient, surgical, senior and wound care. Along with state-of-the-art medical services, ACH offers complementary therapies to patients including aromatherapy, deep-tissue massage and Reiki. Alliance Historical Society and

Mabel Hartzell Historical Home

Many people don’t know that there is an organization in Alliance that is responsible for collecting, organizing and preserving items pertaining to the history of the city of Alliance. The Alliance Historical Society has been doing this work since its inception in 1939. One of the founding members was Mabel Hartzell, a prominent citizen who bequeathed her home and its contents to the Historical Society to be maintained as a museum for future generations. The Victorian-style home offers a glimpse of life in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the society has many more photographs, documents, and artifacts in its collection. The archives of the society include historic photographs, documents and other items of significance to the city. They are housed in Rodman Public Library and many are available online through Alliance Memory at www.alliancememory.org. The society is investigating options to create a historical museum to display the many treasures it owns. Programs on various historical topics of interest to Alliance residents are often presented at area venues such as Rodman Public Library. Members of the society are also available to give programs to organizations throughout the area. Greater Alliance Foundation By definition a community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people in a local area. Thus, in 1998 a group of business leaders decided to establish a community foundation to promote philanthropic interest in the greater Alliance area. Their goal was to match charitable intentions with specific needs through a carefully managed program that will attract endowment resources and provide donors, recipients and the community with efficiency and accountability in stewardship of funds made available for the betterment of the greater Alliance area. Today, the Greater Alliance Foundation has total assets of approximately $9,000,000 and since its inception has assisted more than 70 organizations through grants totaling over $3,000,000. The foundation manages several endowments of local organizations and provides administrative services to several smaller organizations in the area. 12 years, the foundation has made a significant impact through its four initiatives to address the specific needs in the Alliance area. The first initiative was in 2002 when the Adult Career Training Assistance Program was established as a subcommittee of the foundation. The program has been granted $288,000 over the past nine years including $30,000 this year. The committee awarded 26 scholarships in 2010-2011 and 437 scholarships to date. The foundation initiated the Alliance Family YMCA Learn to Swim program and provided start-up funding. As a result, hundreds of Alliance, Marlington, Sebring, and Regina Coeli second-graders enjoy free swimming lessons each year to learn this important life-saving skill. The Robert T. White School of Practical Nursing was initiated by the foundation in 2004. The center is named for retired Alliance physician Dr. Robert T. White. The school is under the umbrella of the Alliance Career Centre along with a number of other training and educational courses of study through Alliance City Schools. The nursing school has earned its second five-year certification with full approval by the Ohio Board of Nursing. The school offers a two-year LPN course of study and offers day and

The District

Just over 3,000 students are enrolled in the city schools. The system employs about 500 full-time and part-time personnel to serve the students. Educational needs of all students including children with disabilities and gifted students are fulfilled through programs tailored to specific needs and abilities. Summer programs are offered for students in grades one through 12. Award-winning early learning programs for children age 3 through kindergarten regularly give more than 400 children a good foundation for education.

Alliance High School

Alliance High School offers numerous opportunities for students to get an early start on post-secondary education. Through progressive initiatives such as post-secondary education options and dual-credit, credit-flexibility and articulation agreements, students can start their college careers with many credits already earned. Post-secondary institutions Alliance City Schools have partnered with for these initiatives include Mount Union, Stark State College, Kent State, The University of Akron, Youngstown State, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Hocking College. Alliance students also routinely earn college credit with high scores on advanced placement courses in studio art, biology, English literature and U.S. history. In addition to these extensive college preparatory programs, the high school curriculum includes programs in general studies and tech-prep education. Alliance offers tech-prep programs to prepare students for work or further training in a career field following high school. Programs include automotive technology, automotive collision repair, broadcast arts, computer support and services, construction trades, cosmetology, financial services and risk management, health services and athletic training, horticulture and landscape design, integrated media, welding and fabricating. Alliance High School also offers a musical program with well over 200 students who participate

in vocal groups such as show choirs, concert choirs, and gospel choirs. Students can join instrumental groups such as marching band, concert band, jazz band and orchestra. Alliance has one of Stark County’s only orchestra programs. Numerous extracurricular activities are available to students. A sampling of these include 18 varsity and junior varsity athletic programs, an awardwinning Academic Challenge team, Destination Imagination Teams that have participated in competition at the state and national levels, National Honor Society, and a chapter of Students Against Destruction Decisions.

Alliance Middle School

Alliance Middle School is housed in a facility that was recently designed and built specifically with the needs of a great middle school in mind. Middle school students are assigned to one of two teams that comprise each level. This team approach allows for smaller class sizes and a more nurturing environment where positive studentteacher relationships are emphasized. Housing students in grades six through eight, Alliance Middle School’s academic program begins with a strong focus on a successful transition from elementary to middle school and finishes with opportunities that allow eighth-graders to get a head start on high school by earning high school credit. Students at Alliance Middle School have plenty of opportunities for social interaction, as the faculty and staff recognize this as an important part of students’ growth and development. Aviator pride is evident in the strongly supported athletic programs that start at the middle school level. The Aviators compete against neighboring schools in the Northeast Buckeye Conference. Alliance Middle School has formed many community partnerships. The After School Navigators program is a joint effort with Synergy Alliance and is a collaboration with the University of Mount Union, the Alliance YMCA and the Alliance YWCA. Alliance Middle School is also a member of the Care Team Network that exists to provide for not just the academic, but also the home and family needs of our students.

Elementary Schools Northside, Parkway and Rockhill elementary schools house students in grades one through five. The elementary schools are hubs of educational and social activities that engage students in the learning process. Special interactive teams, assisted by child and adolescent professionals, are an active

component in each elementary building. These teams comprise collaborative groups of professional personnel aided by parent input and teacher reference to help students to adjust to the everchanging world and daily challenges they must face.

The Alliance Early Learning School

Alliance Early Learning School opened in the fall of 2006. The school expects to build the foundation for a seamless transition to school-age programs. The program serves only preschool and kindergarten children in the Alliance City School District. There are 19 classrooms and approximately 400 students in the building. There are 12 kindergarten classrooms, two designated for special needs. The school strives to establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with each child’s family and community partners to support the achievement of program goals. The Early Learning School maintains quality early childhood programs for Alliance children and their families.

Athletic Programs

The Alliance City School District competes in extensive interscholastic athletic programs under the directives of the Ohio High School Athletic Association in grades seven through 12. These programs include track, cross-country, wrestling, football, basketball, golf, volleyball, and cheerleading in high school and middle school. High school-only programs include soccer (boys and girls), tennis (boys and girls), swimming (boys and girls), bowling (boys and girls), baseball and softball. The Alliance Aviators have a rich tradition for being competitive in every sport.

Marlington Local Schools — Home of the Dukes

Marlington Local School District serves three townships in eastern Stark County: Marlboro, Lexington and Washington. The district name was derived from the combination of the three townships that make up the district. Each of the townships has an elementary school and then students share a middle and high school campus, which is centrally located on Moulin Avenue. In 2007, the district hired former high school principal Jim Nicodemo as superintendent. Nicodemo’s goals for the district are to achieve academic success of students, improve school and community relations and maintain fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers of the district. The district first received the Ohio Department of Education’s excellent rating on its report card for the 2006-2007 school year and has continued earning an excellent rating for five straight years. In order to receive an excellent rating, Marlington had to meet 25 out of 26 state indicators or have a performance index score of

Sebring Local Schools — Home of the Trojans The Sebring Local School District serves 620 students who are housed in two buildings, B.L. Miller Elementary for kindergarten through sixth grade and Sebring McKinley Junior and Senior High School for grades seven through 12. The district has about 95 full-time staff members. The district’s 2010-11 report card shows the district as being effective, as measured by the state of Ohio, having met 20 of 26 performing indicators. Also, both buildings received effective ratings on the 2010-11 report card. The district offers intervention programs such as one-on-one instruction in reading and math in addition to summer school programs at both elementary and high school levels.
