Welcome back to Hickory Hollow, one of Beverly Lewis’ well-known Old Order Amish communities, with her latest story. Life has not been kind to Jodi Winfield; her recent sister’s death, her fiance’s recent job move to another country, and her own recent job loss. Jodi finds herself at a cross roads in her life and where better to regroup than in the quiet community of Lancaster, Pennsylvania where she has agreed to house sit for her cousin. While out on a run in the country side, Jodi happens upon a little girl all alone on the side of the road. The child is tired and dirty and clearly does not speak English. Jodi must find her parents and learns of the Old Order community of Hickory Hollow. Meanwhile, Maryanna, a widowed Amish mother of four, has lost her precious four-year-old daughter, Sarah, while riding home late one night in her buggy. The Amish community pulls together and starts a search to bring the missing toddler home. Maryanna must deal with the separation from her daughter and trust God will bring her safely home. Will God provide a temporary guardian angel to protect her youngest daughter?

Beverly Lewis has done an excellent job of capturing the acceptance of an “Englisher” to an Amish community that is solely based on tradition. Lewis clearly demonstrates how the simple life may be exactly the answer to Jodi’s personal struggles. As the two women’s paths cross, neither one’s future will ever be the same. It was a pleasure to return to Lewis’ joyful town of Hickory Hollow. I have never experienced the blessing that is childbirth, but after speaking with a local midwife I have developed a greater respect for those women who choose to give birth on their own or through a midwife. Sandra Hess shares an interesting view on how our society views childbirth and what should be considered “natural” childbirth. Midwifery is not as highly practiced by the local Amish community as one might think. It seems that many choose to attend a local hospital to give birth but there are still many Amish communities who chose to have a midwife deliver their children. In our Amish Heartland of Wayne and Holmes counties, it seems there is much diversity throughout the different communities. Featured in this issue of Amish Heartland, Ole Mill Furniture, found in the quaint little town of Charm, offers high quality, Amish furniture at reasonable prices. Stop in and see Leon Mast’s fine collection of furniture for every room in the house. If you don’t see exactly what you are looking for, share your ideas with Leon and he can come up with a unique design to fit your needs as well as be an original piece for your home. If you ever travel west of Holmes and Wayne counties, you enter an older order Amish community. Just on the other side of Ashland, as you cross into Richland county, you come upon the small country village of Olivesburg, Ohio. It’s hard to miss the vibrant, bright blue siding of the small country store located in the center of town. “Step back in time” is the store’s motto, and that’s just how you feel as you walk through the doors. Connie Crossen has worked hard to keep this laid back, country feel and bring back memories for her customers who have visited the store for many years. As you plan your trips to the Heartland this spring, make sure the small countryside of Olivesburg makes your list. A relaxing drive through the countryside and a stop for some hand dipped ice cream could be just what you have been longing as the weather begins to warm.

STORY & PHOTOS BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

Leon Mast discovered he had a gift, “a God given talent” when it came to design. Sticking with the ever reliable pencil and notebook, Mast never felt the need to use the latest software to create his masterpieces. Hand-drawn works of art become long lasting pieces of furniture for many of Masts customers. What was once an old feed mill located in the heart of Charm and owned by Mast’s father, Abe Mast, was transformed into 7,000 square feet of showroom space for furniture and home décor. “My sister and I decided we wanted to do something different, so we remodeled and put in furniture,” said Leon Mast. Having no previous knowledge of running a furniture store, Mast and his sister faced their ups and downs with the business. “It has been a learning experience,” said Mast. Most of his pieces are created by the local craftsman in the area or designed by Mast himself. As you walk through three floors of furniture for every room in your home, if you don’t find exactly what you had dreamed, Mast will work with you to create a dream space that is all your own. “Tables and chairs are the hottest item right now,” said Mast. The main floor is dedicated to several of these handcrafted dining sets. Dark and light woods are paired with the most vibrant colored accessories to inspire the home owner. The top floor carries several bedroom sets and living room furniture from the most rustic to more contemporary styles. Mast hopes to

’’

incorporate more contemporary styles in all his pieces as it seems to be the most popular trend among his customers. Keeping up with the trends is not always the easiest in a slower paced economy like the one that surrounds Charm. “This area doesn’t change too fast,” said Mast. “We introduced the Mission Styles 10-12 years ago and they were not popular at first but are recently starting to catch on.” Mission styles of furniture are designed to have straight lines and flat panels that accentuate the grain. Often Mission Styles feature inset drawers and slat like doors. They are usually made with an oak finish. “I try to stay on top of the latest trends and work them into my store a little at a time,” said Mast. He also uses some of these modern and classic styles to inspire new designs and create something totally different and unique. 8

Heading towards the basement of Ole Mill, you enter what Mast likes to refer to as the “Man Cave.” A laid back entertainment style features bar stools and couches as well as rustic and outdoor inspired décor. It seems to be one of Masts favorite rooms in the store. “We’ve been here 27 years and we have a good relationship with the community,” said Mast. While he says a lot of his furniture is shipped out, in the past 5 years, much of his customer base has been the local community. “The economy hasn’t been the greatest on supporting the furniture business,” said Mast. “We used to have a lot of customers visiting us from out of state, now many are having furniture shipped directly to them.” Mast hopes that as the economy turns around, it will encourage tourists to come back to purchase furniture pieces for their home and work with Mast to design unique pieces. “We get a lot of compliments on our quality and our price,” said Mast. He receives many new customers due to referrals from his pleased customer base. “I think a lot of our sales have to do with our display and set-up,” said Mast. “People can get a feel for how it will look in their own homes.” Ole Mill Furniture also carries a small selection of pictures and wall signs, décor such as shelves and lamps and even crocks and other small gift items. Ole Mill Furniture is located at 4422 St. Rt. 557 in Charm, Ohio. Hours of operation are Mon.-Weds. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. For more information call 330-893-2823 or visit www. olemillfurniture.com.

What is “natural” childbirth? STORY BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

:

hen you think back to the earliest of times, when hospitals were not readily available for routine procedures that we take for granted today, you start to develop a greater appreciation for those mothers who gave birth to their children from their own homes. Back then, this kind of birth was not called “natural” childbirth, it was simply childbirth. “Our culture is so far away from normalcy in childbirth it is often difficult to have a discussion about it,” said Sandra Hess, a Certified Professional Midwife from the Heartland Midwifery Center in Fresno, Ohio. Hess described to me that saying “natural childbirth” is like saying “frozen ice cream.” The culture that many of us have come to surround ourselves with, considers the norm as one where mothers go to a hospital to give birth to their children. “You don’t have to add anything to have childbirth,” said Hess. As a midwife, her focus remains solely on keeping the woman comfortable and by doing this a birth can easily take

14

place without the use of surgical tools, drugs or cesarean sections. Hess found herself interested in the human body and the nature of birth from an early age. She began her studies by doing a lot of textbook research, self teachings and attending conferences on midwifery. She worked as an apprentice and gained her Certified Professional Midwife license in order to gain the respect and confidence from the locals she served. As a part of Heartland Midwifery Center, her goal is to provide a place where women can come to and feel at home as they give birth to their children and has served as a midwife for almost 30 years. Part of Hess’s job as a midwife, is to take the time to get to know the mother to be; decide how to best assist her through her pregnancy and determine how to best serve her in childbirth. “I support a mother’s decision in how she wants to have her child (whether that’s through midwifery or surgical care) but I want the mother to be informed about all her options,” said Hess.

The Midwives Model of Care gives a good understanding as to what midwifery has to offer. The model is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are a normal life process. This model should be introduced to women considering home birthing and reads as follows: • Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social wellbeing of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle. • Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support. • Minimizing technological interventions. • Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention. The application womann of this wo w oma mancentered model of ca care are has has as been proven to reduce incidence ce the inc cideence of birth injury, trauma, uma m , an and d ccesarean esaare rean section. do have the tools to monitor the pregnancy but are mostly looking for anything that could be considered abnormal. No drugs or medicines are used during childbirth, in fact midwives are merely standing by to oversee and assist as needed. The less stress is put on the mother-with people surrounding her-the easier it is for mother to relax and have the baby. “The first disturbance in labor comes when a woman leaves her own home,” said Hess. Hormones are rising and the baby can become distressed if the mother is not comfortable herself. “Why not have a home-like room for a couple to come to and have their children.” At the midwife center, the mother to be has the ability to roam around the room, use the small kitchen, walk the hallways, y , and do anything y g theyy could do in their own home. Ascension Day

Traditionally celebrated since ancient times as the day Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, it is observed on a Thursday, the 40th day after Easter Sunday. In some Christian traditions, this day is viewed as a “holy day of obligation,” although not many actually close businesses or refrain from working on that day. While many shops will remain open for regular business hours, smaller shops or those dependent on Amish employees may close in observance of this religious holiday.

COTTAGE COUNTRY The Cottage Country style offers a cozy, rustic atmosphere and works well in smaller homes. This style really allows you to be creative when picking out pieces for each room. You have the option to restore old pieces and give them a modern twist or just leave them as the classic piece they are.

Storage Minimal space for storage is often a problem in smaller cottage style homes. Oftentimes furniture pieces have more than one purpose. For example benches or ottomans may open to reveal storage bins and coffee tables or side tables may have storage built in. Baskets can be used as a catchall for misplaced items and work well with the country theme. Consider hiding modern technologies and appliances by tucking them behind cabinet doors to make a space feel larger and less cluttered.

The older the better Part of what gives the Country Cottage style its charm is the rustic feel to the furniture and accessories. Old barn doors can be reused as closet or pantry doors; wood paneling from old barns make great flooring; and vintage signs make great works of art. The weathered look is most definitely in when it comes to this style of decorating.

It’s all about the details Wood paneling and bead-board walls or backsplashes create a simplistic, country charm. Warn finishes and textures also add to the rustic feel. When it comes to furniture, the simpler the better. Floral fabrics, faded colors and country plaids make great curtains, tablecloths and upholstery coverings. Choose natural colors when painting; tones of greens, browns and blues seem to be most popular.

Country Living When picking out accessories for your home, look for things that would normally be found in the country. Attend flea markets and farm auctions and look for old wood furniture pieces that could become something new. Salvage pieces like old windows to turn into picture frames or weather vanes or pieces of farm equipment to use as centerpieces and unique works of art. If you enjoy the peaceful life of the countryside, the cottage country style maybe just what you have been looking for. Warm earth tones make your space cozy for friends and family and vintage and weathered pieces add a rustic charm to your humble abode. 28

STORY & PHOTOS BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

You truly take a trip back in time as you enter the front doors of Olivesburg General Store. Located in the small country town of Olivesburg, the town has a very close-knit, down home feel. The drive out was enough to melt away the stresses of the day, as I passed the beautiful Amish countryside on my drive west on State Route 96 just west of Ashland. Coming to the intersection of State Route 545, my eyes were instantly drawn to the most vibrant blue building I had ever seen, just across an open ďŹ eld. I knew I had reached my destination as I pulled into the drive and spotted a group of elderly gentlemen sitting on picnic benches sharing conversations of the good old days over their morning coffee. As I entered the shop, I immediately felt a smile come across my face as I looked at old fashioned signs that hung from the ceiling and began to imagine all the history in the old building. I didn’t have to imagine long, as owner Connie Crossen introduced herself and shared the story of the little store with me. 19 years ago Crossen and her husband decided to purchase the shop and turn it into their very own general store. “I made homemade chocolates out of my own home and I wanted to purchase a store to sell my chocolates,â€? said Crossen. “The business has grown so much and got so busy, I only do chocolates for special orders or during special occasions.â€? The Crossen’s added many different items to their store from chocolates and candies, to everyday conveniences such as bread and milk and have been working to expand on their house ware collections. Among their house ware selections, Crossen gets the most compliments and requests on her cookie cutters.

“We carry 400 plus cookie cutters. They are a huge seller for us,” said Crossen. “I can’t even fathom how many we sell.” Many call in from all over requesting certain shapes and styles and Crossen said they make great gifts. A large ice-cream bar is located in the center of the store where 16 different flavors of hand-dipped ice cream is served all year long. Original marble counter tops and a couple of bar stools are still in place from the original store. Olivesburg General Store is home to the most famous ice cream treat, the Shawshank Sundae. This mouth watering treat starts with a warm brownie covered in peanut butter ice cream, lots of hot fudge and topped with whipped cream, M&M’s and a cherry on top. Crossen said, people rave over the dessert and ask for it when they visit. “It’s like heaven on earth,” she said. Olivesburg General Store also has a small deli with a selection of meats and cheese and serves pizza and hot subs.

In the back corner of the store is Candy Junction. “When my son was little, we would go to a local candy store and buy candy. I wanted to recreate that time I had with him by recreating that store,” said Crossen. It brings back so many memories for her son as well as others who remember a time when they shopped in similar candy stores. Many other aspects of the old building make guests feel like they have taken a trip back in time and reminisce over their fondest memories. The building was built in 1840 to serve as a small convenience store to the locals of Richland County. In 1871 the building burnt down but much of the original flooring was salvaged once the new building was built. The building served many purposes throughout the years and left behind pieces of history as it changed hands. Old lawn mower and farm machinery chains hang from the ceiling and even though they are no longer usable, Crossen couldn’t bear to take them “Olivesburg” continued on pg. 36

down. A long mirror hangs above the window looking over the small café and use to serve as a barber shop mirror. Along the far wall is a tall shelf with small boxes that hold all varieties of candies. Crossen said, the store used to sell diamonds for rings. People would look through the different boxes of loose diamonds and pick one to be set right there into a ring. An elderly women came in to tell Crossen that her ring had been purchased at this very store. Return customers sharing stories of their memories of the old days always brings a smile to Crossen’s face and that smile even comes through as she retells them to others. “We are just a little country store with a lot of country charm,” said Crossen.

36

“We are a close-knit community and we serve the locals and the travelers,” said Crossen. She even keeps a charge book for her local customers, something not many stores can do these days. As much as they appreciate the local community, Crossen knows the locals can’t keep them in business. “We get tour buses in a lot,” said Crossen. Just recently they hosted a tour bus from Cincinnati and had so much fun meeting everyone. “They just filled the store.” Olivesburg General Store has also become a routine stop for Poker Runs and a Corvette Club that meets for lunch a couple times a year. “It’s a nice drive out here,” said Crossen and their bright blue building is rather hard to miss. Five years ago Crossen made the decision to paint the building such a bold color. Many

people felt she was crazy for it at first but soon came to realize just how attractive the building was to travelers passing by. Crossen is always looking for ways to improve her small business. Currently she hopes to incorporate more house ware items. Olivesburg General Store seems to have a little something for everyone from food to souvenirs and gifts. “We try to keep our store unique. We blend the old with the present while still keeping the unique old fashioned feel,” said Crossen. “So walk around with an ice cream and explore or come have lunch with us sometime,” said Crossen. “Midwifery continued from pg. 15

relaxed making childbirth easy when the time comes. During her time as a midwife, Hess has served many Amish families in the area. While some choose to give birth in their own home, some also visit the center. Midwifery is not as highly practiced in all Amish communities as one might think. According to Hess, it depends on the community and their beliefs. A large Amish community like our Amish Heartland, found in Wayne and Holmes Counties, is home to Amish who range from the oldest of orders to newer orders. There are many Amish families who choose to have their children at the local hospital but there are also many who choose to stick with a traditional home birth. For many Amish, the choice to practice traditional home birthing comes down to both logical reasoning and valued beliefs. Amish families tend to average 7 children and the cost of birthing each of them could

42

become substantial by attending local hospitals without commercial insurance. Comfort is also key to the traditional lifestyles of the Amish. Midwives and local doctors tend to have a better understanding of this lifestyle. Many Amish families live a great distance from the nearest hospital and quick transportation is not always readily available. Whatever a mother chooses to do is essentially based on her own values and beliefs. Hess said that many women choose to follow the traditions of their sisters when it comes to the birth of their children. Hess wants all mothers to really research their options and become more informed. She hopes midwifery will someday become a more commonly practiced method of childbirth for Amish and English women.
