More lives are in need of mending as Emma Yoder-Miller takes on her next group of avid quilters. It has been a year and a half since Emma took on her first quilting class and while she has taught several other classes since, she has yet to come across a more memorable group of troubled misfits until now. Since marrying the Amish widow, Lamar Miller, Emma has enjoyed their time teaching together. As signups slowly begin to trickle in for her next quilting class, Emma is unsure what to expect. Anna is a troubled Amish teen who feels like her parents are smothering her and not allowing her the same experiences many other Amish teens have during their rumschpringe. Carmen Lopez is a journalist sent to Indiana on a mission to uncover the truth behind rumschpringe. Selma Nash is a busybody, who is always ridiculing the neighborhood and is signed up for the class by a neighbor. Terry Cooley is a rugged roofer who decides to join the class in hopes of coming out with an attractive date and Blaine Vickers is tricked into joining the class after losing a bet with his boss. Cheryl Halverson just wants to mend her ailing grandmother’s old quilt and surprise her with it for her

birthday. That very quilt reveals a lifetime of secrets that no one ever saw coming. Emma has found herself facing a rowdy group very much like her first group of misfit quilters. She quickly decides she must come up with some way to connect with her students on a deeper level. Wanda Brunstetter does a great job of intertwining the lives of these new characters with the lives of the characters from her first book. The drama the laughs dr ram a a and and th he la laug u hs continue in Brunstetter’s Brun Br nst stet e te et ter’ r’s second s co se ond installment Half-Stitched of tthe h H he a f-Stitched Amish al Quilting Club.

&RPH 6KRS ([SORUH 6WD\ Amish country is heading into its most colorful and vibrant time of the year. The beautiful foliage attracts thousands of travelers to the area every year and fall marks the busiest season in Amish country as the shops prepare their stores for holiday sales. Use this edition of Amish Heartland to plan your fall travels to Amish country. Berlin Hotel and Suites is on its way to becoming a high class resort. With over 60 rooms and more to come in the future, Berlin Hotel and Suites offers top-notch amenities. 17,000 square feet of ďŹ tness facilities, indoor pool area and the only hotel in Ohio to have its own indoor theater are just a few of its ďŹ nest accommodations. Check out the story on page 6 to see what is in store for the future of Berlin Hotel. Berlin Furniture is not your typical furniture store. You won’t ďŹ nd a large show room of the perfect living room set-up or ďŹ ne dining establishment. Instead you will ďŹ nd a small assortment of beautifully hand crafted end tables, jewelry boxes and clocks. You will also ďŹ nd that Reuben Miller has taken on a new hobby of crafting specialty novelty pieces such as model airplanes and small stools. The Wanda E. Brunstetter novel, “The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Clubâ€? comes to life at the Carlisle Inn, Sugarcreek. In September, the Carlisle Inn kicked off the second half of their season with a new Amish musical about an unlikely group of people that come together for a quilting class taught by an Amish widow. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience as laughter ďŹ lled the theater and a touch of drama kept viewers on the edge of their seat until the climatic ending. So there you have it! Checking in? Friendly smiles, a beautifully decorated entryway and a warm, oatmeal cookie welcome those who plan their stay with Berlin Hotel and Suites. 17,000 square feet of fitness facilities, an indoor salt water pool and the only hotel in the state of Ohio to have a private movie theater are just a few of the amenities that set Berlin Hotel and Suites apart from many other hotels in the area. As the newly appointed general manager, Jessica Wile said she is most excited for all the changes in store for the hotel. “The hotel used to be the Amish Country Inn,” she said. Since Jerry Anderson purchased the property seven years ago, the hotel has been completely remodeled and is expecting even more changes for the future. Wile couldn’t contain her excitement as she shared all the changes yet to come for the hotel. “We will officially become a resort after the first of the year,” said Wile. As Amish country enters into its biggest season for tourists, guests at Berlin Hotel and Suites can expect to spend a majority of their time exploring the grounds; either walking on the walking trails, feeding the fish in the small fish pond or enjoying a round or two on the putting greens. Children will have hours of entertainment as they explore the little kids safety town. “I am very excited about this little town,” said Wile. “There will be cobblestone sidewalks, a small movie theater (playing a few Disney movies throughout the day) a small grocery store, dance theater and little houses with painted, themed walls inside.” Children can also rent tricycles to roll through the town. Patio areas with tables and chairs sit overlooking the grounds and grills are scattered about for guests to use. Fire pits make the patio the perfect place to gather with friends and family in the evenings to share stories of their day in Amish country or just kick back and relax after a long day of shopping. Guests don’t have to worry about keeping up with their fitness routine while they’re away from home for the week.

The hotel offers 17,000 square feet of fitness facilities which include: a weight room, spinning room, aerobics room, racquet ball quart, an indoor salt water pool, sauna and steam room. The 26 seat private movie theater plays three movies every night and makes the hotel of a kind. The hotel will also offer a small store that will sell food and novelty items for guests. After a long day of taking in all that Amish country has to offer, it is time to retire for the night. All rooms are equipped with cable TVs, a small dining table and chair and complimentary wireless internet access. A deluxe room gives guests the option of a balcony or porch and suites give guests even more amenities such as Jacuzzi tubs, small desks and refrigerators. Suites are beautifully decorated with fire places and chandeliers as well as wood finishes on the ceilings and custom made hardwood furniture pieces. Currently, the hotel has 68 rooms with 17 of those rooms being suites. Wile said they are in the process of renovating the neighboring building on the property 8

(which used to be a restaurant) into 10 new rooms and a bridal suite. Other changes, still in the early stages of development include a nail salon, barber shop and doctors office. “All these amenities will really pull us away from everyone else in Berlin,” she said. Wile was especially excited for the Christmas season. “We spend a day just decorating the place for Christmas and getting the place into the holiday spirit,” said Wile. “We have life size reindeer and Santa’s sleigh which sits on the wall above the front desk.” The welcome area is also decorated head to toe in all things Christmas such as garland, icicles, lights and much more. Berlin Hotel and Suites’ main goal is to provide their guests with a peaceful and luxurious experience. Their friendly staff makes guests feel welcome from the moment they walk in the door. Berlin Hotel and Suites is located one mile west of downtown Berlin at 5330 County Road 201. After another successful season of “The Confession,â€? the Carlisle Inn, Sugarcreek began the second half of their season with the premiere of “Half-Stitched, The Musical.â€? Based on the novel “The HalfStitched Amish Quilting Club,â€? by Wanda E. Brunstetter, the most unlikely group of quilters come together in Amish widow, Emma Yoder’s home to ďŹ nd they will learn more than just quilting. Emma thought she would ďŹ nd herself surrounded by a group of elderly women, eager to share her love of quilting, but is shocked to ďŹ nd such a motley crew of misďŹ ts. Emma enlists the help of her dear friend Lamar Miller, who is a ďŹ ne quilter himself and has created the most unique quilt patterns. Emma feels that she will have her work cut out for her and she looks to God for guidance. A burly, biker named Jan, “the man,â€? ďŹ nds himself attending the class in order to fulďŹ ll a community service requirement after getting out of jail. Pam Johnston, “with a ‘T’,â€? has forced her husband Stuart to attend the class in hopes that it would be something they could do as a couple and help mend their slowly unraveling marriage. Ruby Lee Williams is a preacher’s wife, looking for a little “me timeâ€? and

hoping to find solace in the company of others after overhearing negative talks of her husband. After years of faithful service to their church, it seems the community has lost faith in their leader. Star, an outcast, is taking the class as a favor to her grandmother; the only one in her life who truly understands her in her times of need and Paul Ramirez stumbles upon the class after bringing an unfinished quilt to Emma’s home for repair. His wife had started making the quilt for their daughter before she passed away in a car accident, but Emma convinces Paul to learn to finish it himself. As each character introduced themselves, they shared their musical talents and expressed their personalities in song. The jokes continued to roll throughout the play as Stuart overly stressed his annoyance at being forced to attend the class and continually nit-picked at his seemingly perfect wife. Jan and Stuart’s never ending banter and teasing of one

another has Emma worried there will be trouble and the boisterous pastor’s wife is not afraid to share her opinion of the whole situation. During the second act of the musical, Paul gives a heart-wrenching performance as he describes life as a military man serving time in Afghanistan and returning home to find his wife had perished in a terrible car accident, and towards the end of the play, the lives of two of the students are changed forever as they find they have more in common than just attending a silly quilting class. Emma begins to realize that God has placed this group of misfits in her home not only to help them learn to quilt, but to guide them in sewing the pieces of their fragmented lives back together. She also finds the women of the quilting class have her best interests at heart as they help Emma to discover her feelings may be deeper than she realized for Lamar Miller. Having read the book, I found the play stuck to the basic story line, yet was adopted to take place in the Sugarcreek area which made it very relatable. Watching this performance as a theater-in-the-round or arena theater performance, brought new meaning to the term center stage. Audience members sat all around the stage as the performers moved about and performed to all sides of “Musical” continued on page 42

Nestled along the outskirts of Berlin, you will find Reuben Miller’s small furniture shop. Unlike many of the local Amish wood shops nearby, you will not find floors upon floors of furniture in show-room like displays. Instead, when entering his small shop, you will be surprised to find the most unique, hand-crafted wooden items and much more. Berlin Furniture is not your typical Amish furniture store. For 34 years, the family business has been a part of the Berlin community. “Since I was a boy I have always liked woodworking,” said Reuben Miller, owner. Growing up on the family farm, the children always had chores to tend to, but that did not sway Miller from finding time to tinker around in the wood shop. “My brother is a year younger than me and he was the farmer,” said Miller. “I would spend as much of my extra time as I could in the wood shop.” As they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and Miller took after his father who owned a small custom furniture shop in Sugarcreek. In 1979, his father-inlaw purchased the shop in Berlin and Miller’s father provided him with all the tools he would need to make his wood creations. “And that’s how I got my start,” said Miller, reminiscently. “My favorite part about owning and working in the furniture store is seeing satisfied customers,” said Miller. He has created a variety of custom furniture pieces and specialty products, but just like many business owners, his greatest satisfaction comes from seeing a customer who is pleased with the final product. Among his wooden inventory, you will find things such as end tables,

jewelry chests (which are made by local artisans) and clocks. Hall trees and small decorative lamps along with an assortment of other miscellaneous items can be found in Miller’s shop. Berlin Furniture also carries the Berlin Flyer Wagon with auto steering and built with a non-tip design. The wagons are a hit with the children and are somewhat of a novelty item. “I’m starting to change up my product line,” said Miller. His passion for woodworking has expanded to the next level as he begins to make handcrafted novelty pieces. Miller has found that his small wooden benches or stools make great gifts for employee recognition banquets and can be laser engraved. Miller also handcrafts model jet planes which can be great for displays and gifts. The model jets are hand painted and have the most intricate of details from the windows and jet name carved into the side. Small wooden coffee mugs are made by a local shop and sold in Miller’s store. Miller said these also make great gifts for family or recognition banquets. The small wooden cup brought in over $200 at the Haiti benefit auction, Miller explained. As Berlin enters into the fall months, Miller explained that along with the rest of the town, Berlin Furniture sees its highest volume of customers. “Expect 8 to 10 weeks of turnaround time on custom orders,” he said.

While Miller explained he is in “semi-retirement” he enjoys spending his time crafting special novelty pieces and still takes custom orders for small furniture pieces as well. Just allow him some time to fish a couple times a year he joked. Berlin Furniture is located at 5044 County Road 120 just one mile south of Berlin. Business hours are MondaySaturday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For more information call 330-893-3261.
