Who the Bishop Knows

– B O O K R E V I E W–

By VANET TA CHAPMAN Reviewed by EMILY RUMES Amish Heartland Contributor

W

ho the Bishop Knows is the third installment in the series by Vanetta Chapman. The series also includes book one, What the Bishop Saw and book two, When the Bishop Needs an Alibi. As the story starts, the residents of a small Amish community in Monte Vista, Colorado, look forward to the Ski Hi Stampede, the state’s oldest professional rodeo. The rodeo is always good, clean entertainment for the hardworking farmers of the San Luis Valley. But this year, the Stampede turns deadly for one Amish man. Did rodeo fans see an unfortunate accident? Or something more sinister? Amish bishop Henry Lapp, the focal character of the series, is known far and wide for his uncanny ability to draw and remember the smallest details of anything he’s seen, skills that have served him well in past investigations. Henry was at the rodeo that day, but the problem is that he did not see Jeremiah Schwartz’s death. With a murderer on the loose and members of his community being threatened, Henry must act fast. But will he be able to draw upon his other skills to solve a crime he didn’t see? This time around, Henry will have to rely on his keen sense of human character and observation, skills he’s honed in his role as bishop, if he hopes to crack the case. Who the Bishop Knows is a story of accepting our

talents, putting one another first, and trusting that God will care for His children. The author, Vannetta Chapman was a teacher for 15 years and currently writes full-time. She lives in the Texas Hill Country with her husband, pets, and a herd of deer.

–IS RUMSPRINGA REALLY REAL?– Story by Executive Director

M A RC U S YODE R Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center

Some Amish support their youth playing softball, while some more conservative groups see it as part of the worldly, slippery slope.

T

he most frequently asked question about the Amish that our staff encounters is about “Rumspringa.” This is largely due to the proliferation of so-called “reality” television shows on the subject and how it is covered in fictional novels. In these sensationalized accounts, Amish youth are said to be given a year or several years “off ” at age sixteen or eighteen, in which they leave their home community and sample the pleasures of the outside world. After this year, they supposedly need to make a decision whether they wish to remain Amish or not. If they choose to return to the Amish, they settle down and become baptized members of the Amish Church. If they choose to not return to their community, the story goes, they will be shunned. Though this might make for interesting novel or TV show plots, it is very inaccurate. So, what is “Rumspringa”? Rumspringa literally translates as “running around.” The term is not as frequently used by the Amish as the popular shows and novels imply. A boy or girl may be raised by Amish parents in an Amish community and attend an Amish school and Amish church services, but they are not members of the Amish church until they personally make the choice to become baptized. Contrary to popular myths, there is not set age for this. Girls typically make that decision in their late teens or early twenties, while for boys it is more likely to be their early 10

April

through mid-twenties. When a young Amish boy or girl graduates from school at age fourteen, they start looking forward to being fifteen or sixteen and being old enough to “run around.” This begins a period in their lives where they are no longer considered children but not yet members of the church and because they are not yet church members, they have not accepted the church regulations. The popular Rumspringa myths focus on those who go to extremes. There are Amish youth who throw themselves into sampling the pleasures of the world with great enthusiasm. Such youth may experiment with hairstyles quite different from the approved or accepted mode, dress in non-Amish clothing and in the case of young girls, make-up and jewelry. Some will obtain a driver’s license at age eighteen and begin driving a vehicle, with sporty pick-up trucks being a favorite. Dabbling in movies, music, and professional sports events is not uncommon. Sadly, drugs and alcohol are a danger they may choose to sample as well. Local newspapers have covered, to the profound embarrassment of the community in general, accounts of “wild Amish parties” where underage drinking and rowdy behavior draw the attention of the law. More than one Amish parent has been devastated at having to accompany a minor-child to court to face charges.

So, what is “Rumspringa”? Rumspringa literally translates as “running around.” The term is not as frequently used by the Amish as the popular shows and novels imply. To say that this is a “rite of passage” or condoned by the parents or the community is inaccurate. Implying that parents encourage this would be the same as suggesting the average non-Amish parent is encouraging similar behavior in their non-Amish children. Amish parents hope their children will choose to grow up and follow the teachings they gave them, becoming members of the Amish church. At the same time, they know that a young adult cannot always be forced to make wise or safe choices. Popular fiction or media accounts often ignore that it is only a very small segment of Amish youth who engage in this kind of behavior. We would be remiss to not look at what the “others” do for social connections that are often a part of teen years. A group often overlooked by the media is one which is made up of Amish youth who do choose a path more in keeping with Amish values. They will continue to dress in an Amish manner and are typically more involved in adult-supervised and organized activities, such as Friday evening volleyball games and suppers or Sunday evening singings. Like young people the world over, the Amish youth are interested in meeting and engaging with their peers. More conservative groups are less tolerant of non-Amish clothing or driving a car and tend to not organize extracurricular activities for their youth, other than Sunday evening singings. New Order Amish put a lot of effort into organizing structured and supervised activities for the youth. Also, as it is in society at large, some Amish parents may be stricter than others. Regardless of which “group” a young Amish man or woman falls in with, the hope and prayer of their parents is that the youth will choose to become baptized into the Amish church. For youth in the more supervised groups, the changes that they will need to make to assume church regulations may be relatively minor. For those who have chosen to lead a more dramatic life, adjusting to doing without a car or dressing in the manner of their church can be quite a change indeed. So, what happens to those who choose not to join the Amish Church? According to popular misconceptions, they are shunned. This is not accurate. It is very difficult

to give an estimate as to how many youth will choose not to join the church, because it can vary from year to year, from one community to another or from church to church. The more conservative groups typically have a much higher retention rate. Many of those who choose not to join the Amish Church may often join Mennonite churches. The core beliefs of the two are the same, while the Mennonite lifestyle is much more progressive. In moderate to progressive groups, there is rarely any change in relationships and certainly no “shunning” or excommunication. One cannot be excommunicated from something they never belonged to. If you wish to learn more about the Amish, or their place in history, plan a visit the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center. The Center offers guided tours of "Behalt" - a 10 ft. x 265 ft. cyclorama oil-on-canvas painting that illustrates the heritage of the Amish and Mennonite people from their Anabaptist beginnings in Zurich, Switzerland, to the present day. Behalt means “to keep” or “remember.” The Center is open Mon-Sat 9:00-5:00 and is located near Berlin, OH at 5798 County Road 77, Millersburg, OH 44654. Please call (330) 8933192 for more information or to schedule a group tour. Marcus Yoder was born to an Amish family in the heart of Amish Country. His family later moved to the Mennonite Church where Marcus takes an active role in preaching, teaching and writing. He is the Executive Director of the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center. In his thirties he decided to return to school and has a BA in History from The Ohio State University and a MA from Yale. He enjoys reading and writing and spending time with his wife, Norita.

–FROM THE DESK OF JAVON MILLER– Seth's Uncle: Part Two Submitted by JAVON MILLER | Amish Heartland Contributor

H

e came home completely out of breath and looked as if he had survived a tornado. His mother said, “Seth, slow down. What is wrong?” “Mother,” he gasped, “The Romans have Paul in chains. The Hebrews tried to kill him right outside the temple.” In great gasping sobs, the whole story was told. Mother and son knelt in prayer to Jehovah in a plea for His protection over Paul. “Seth, remember that Paul is in God’s care. I really don’t think God is done with Paul yet, but if He is, 18

Paul is willing to die for Him. You have had a rough day. Wash up and take a short nap. It will make you feel better.” The next morning Seth’s mother prepared a basket of bread and dried fruits. “Take these to the castle and see if you can give them to Paul,” she said. “Just be careful son, and please, if it gets rough, don’t wait. Come straight home to safety. Remember Paul is in Jehovah’s hands.” As Seth set out on foot toward the castle, everything seemed right. It was so peaceful that Seth almost forgot the problems of yesterday. The sun was just

starting to warm the grapes hanging heavy in the vineyard beside the road. The heady scent of grapes with the chirping and twittering of the birds were a healing balm to Seth’s heart. “God is Good!” he thought. “Good morning, Seth,” his thoughts were interrupted. He looked to see Rufus on the other side of the stone wall. “Would you like some fresh grapes this morning?” “Yes, I might add some to this basket. I am taking it to Uncle Paul in jail. Hopefully I can see him” “Yes, it is sad. I heard about the uproar yesterday. Tell Paul that I am praying for him if you see him,” said Rufus. “Thank you, Rufus. I am sure he will appreciate it. Thanks again for the grapes.” Seth walked on and was getting a bit tired when he saw Paul’s old friend Simeon coming down the street. He had a preoccupied look on his face and did not recognize Seth. He turned into a courtyard a bit ahead of Seth. Seth approached the open gate and peeked in. A group of men were gathered and in deep discussion. Seth paused and eased a bit closer. Maybe he could find a bit about Paul’s situation with Simeon in the group. Just when Simeon started talking, “I just can’t believe it! Saul knows so much better. He is the highest of traitors in the synagogue. If he is left to go on, he will destroy the church from Alexandria in Africa to Rome. He must be stopped! He is such a passionate and convincing speaker that he will ruin our occupation within the church.” He finished by banging his heavy fist on a bench. NordicWare Waffler #15046

He is such a passionate and convincing speaker that he will ruin our occupation within the church.” “I agree, he must be gotten rid of. Away with him.” So the hubbub continued as all men angrily agreed. One man stood to his full height and thrust out his chest which lay beneath a rich and curly beard. “I will not eat nor drink until we have rid the Earth of Saul!” he declared. “Aye, Aye, So do I, Me too,” echoed the group. “We will somehow get him to be called before the council. While he is being moved with a squad of soldiers, we will ambush and rid ourselves of him,” they declared. Seth was terribly scared! He turned and fled to the street. There were close to 40 men. Who could stop them? “Who was that?” asked one man.

“Oh it was probably just one of those street urchins. Probably an orphan trying to steal a loaf of bread,” answered a pasty-faced, heavy-set man. “No need to worry.” Seth hurried to the castle. He approached the prison in fear. Never had he been to such an evil place before. “And to think, poor Uncle Paul is in here,” he thought. “Halt,” growled the guard. “What do you think you are doing?” “Ahh, Si-si-sir,” stammered Seth, “I came to see my Uncle Paul. I believe he was taken in yesterday. Could I please see him?” “Hahahaha, why sure,” chuckled the Guard. “What a case, so harmless. We had to race in to his rescue yesterday. Why, if it hadn’t been for us, you would be burying your uncle today. I haven’t had so much fun in a long time. One fella’ had ahold of Paul’s arm. One look at my sword and he fainted away. Hahaha, follow me laddie.” “Seth,” whispered Paul through swollen lips and looking through puffy eyelids, when he saw Seth. “Why did you risk coming to see me?” “Oh, Uncle Paul,” cried Seth. “Yesterday was terrible,

“Don’t worry. Paul is in good hands. I will allow no harm to come to him. More important, I begin to see that the power of God which Paul speaks about, is stronger than the whole Roman Army. I am intrigued with these Followers of The Way." but the worst is yet to come. As I was coming here, I saw your friend Simeon. He was going to a meeting. I stopped and listened. The courtyard was full of men. It must be 40 or 50. They vowed that they will not eat or drink until they have gotten you out of the way. Tomorrow they plan to get you before the council. On the way, they plan to ambush you and hurt you.” “Oh, Simeon,” groaned Paul. “You were my best friend. I pray that God may move your heart yet, but I fear it is too late. “Seth, you are a very brave boy. God has plans for you. You must tell the Chief Captain about this.” He turned toward the doorway and called a

centurion. “This young man has something to tell the Captain,” said Paul. “He overheard a plot that will harm you and me. Take him to the Chief so that he may tell him all about it.” Seth shivered with fear at the thought of meeting the Chief Captain. “Come, follow me,” said the centurion. “I sure hope he is in a good mood today.” “This young man has something that he thinks very important to tell you,” scoffed the centurion to the Captain. Chief Captain saw the fear in Seth’s face and said, “Don’t be afraid. I have a boy at home about your age. I have not seen him for half a year already. Come with me.” He reached out and clasped Seth’s small hand in his own big rough hand and led Seth to a private room. “Sit here and tell me all about it.” “Oh, sir, Uncle Paul is in jail here. I was on my way to bring food when I stumbled on a meeting. These men thought I was a street orphan so paid me no attention. They plan to call Paul to council and then ambush you and Paul and hurt you all. I fear for Paul’s life. About 40 men took a vow to not eat or drink till Paul is dead. Please save Paul!” A faraway look came across the Captain’s face as he murmured, “Out of the mouth of babes.” He turned and saw Seth and said, “Don’t worry. Paul is in good hands. I will allow no harm to come to him. More important, I begin to see that the power of God which Paul speaks about, is stronger than the whole Roman Army.
