The Blessing By WANDA BRUNSTET TER
Reviewed by AMANDA NIXON Amish Heartland Contributor
“T
he Blessing” is book two of The Amish Cooking Class Series by Wanda Brunstetter. For those of you who enjoyed the first book, this one did not disappoint. It continues with Heidi Troyer’s desire to teach cooking classes. This edition brings some new enjoyable characters with lots of problems! Brunstetter weaves the characters from the first book into this story and keeps the reader guessing what will happen next. Among her students this time, Heidi has six completely different students that have nothing in common except the cooking class, or do they? Nicole, a teenager with a rough home life, does not want to attend the cooking classes her father purchased for her. Allie, a stay-at-home mom, is curious what she could learn from an Amish woman in the kitchen. Bill, a bachelor, is looking for some new recipes for his hunting buddies on their frequent trips. Lisa, a caterer, is looking for some new recipes for her clients. Lance, Heidi’s mailman, joins in on the fun. And finally, there’s Todd, the food critic that has ulterior motives for taking Heidi’s class.
With a group this dysfunctional, it will be difficult for Heidi to teach them anything! But with a little perseverance and some scripture, Heidi teaches them more than cooking! I enjoyed this book and look forward to Heidi’s next excursion….I do recommend that you read book one before delving into this delicious concoction!

EVEN BEFORE THE SHOW BEGINS you will feel like you're in the ballpark with family and friends. Organ tunes like “Hello, Dolly,” “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” float through the air and during the intermission you can pick up a snack to enjoy from the concession stand. This is the Ohio Star Theater's sixth season, the first in their new venue, located on the Dutch Valley Restaurant campus at the intersection of State Route 39 and Ragersville Road. Audience members come from all over the state and across the country. Before the show there's a bit of crowd interaction, making guests from near and far feel like they're a part of the family.

At the start, the audience stands together to sing the National Anthem and the first musical number is a foot tapping, swinging tune called “The Home Game.” Performers take full advantage of the spacious new stage with more room for choreography and plenty of set changes throughout as we move through time, following the journey of a young Amish man who excels at baseball, as he receives an offer he can't refuse. In the bright, beautifully designed, state-of-the-art Ohio Star Theater, guests will enjoy the story of Levi Troyer's journey, and see the importance of his father's hope. Based on the fictional novel The Home Game by Martha Bolton (which was our July book review

for Amish Heartland) the musical touches on family struggle, worldly temptation and ultimately forgiveness. Blue Gate Musicals, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, produces the shows, led by Dan Posthuma and Wally Nason. The song “I'm Not Like You” is a fun take on the differences that are evident between Levi and his brother John as well as Levi's love interest Hannah and her sister Ruth. These two sibling relationships parallel one another, showing us how to love and support a sibling and also showing the role that resentment and jealously plays between the two brothers. The ensemble settles in nicely after the number “Could It Be Him?” Fun lines like, “there's apple butter in our DNA” and “peanut butter is Amish salsa” will bring you a good laugh as you recognize tie ins to the local Amish culture and values of faith and love throughout the show. The second act of the musical delves into the decisions Levi makes, as they impact him both personally and professionally as a ball player. His friends and family struggle to do what's right, fearing that Levi may never make it back home. The closing song “Journey On” tells us to “let grace be our song” and the entire cast does an

rowing up on a farm brings hard work and a strong constitution into the lives of a young lad. Summertime means haying time. We have all heard the wise old adage, “Make hay while the sun shines.” Whoever made that statement probably never envisioned the scene that unfolded on a farm in central Holmes County lately. I grew up knowing that when the sun shines and the hay is ready, you make hay. Many a time as a teen I was frustrated. While our cronies were all relaxing and having a fun evening, we were slaving in the hayfield. This is where the building of a strong constitution comes in. There might be muttering and despair involved if a teen knows that his buddies are in the middle of a softball game. However, the sleep (and 22

sweat) of a laboring man is sweet. Now, years later as a father, I enjoy the work of haying immensely. We Amish host church in our homes. It so happens that my parents take their turn every year about the same time, the month of June. This also happens to coincide with the peak flush of first cutting hay. With the tendency of rain strong through this time, the hay gets cut when the weather is right. Usually a smaller cutting is done to start with but the main one is voluminous. The task looks daunting! So far the hay has always made it into the barn. Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” This year it started off with a phone call from my
brother, a former schoolteacher, “Could Brandon come up to help with the haying this afternoon?” So it came to be that the 2 boys spent the afternoon helping their uncles in the hayfield. I spent my day doing my thing as a business owner. Early afternoon I hit my pasture with the hay rake. Brandon operated the walk behind sickle bar cutter that week. I am allowed to use the neighbors field for pasture with one constituent. Every year he would mow it a couple times with a 4' mower and a tractor that was almost too small. This is now my responsibility. My thoughts are that if it needs to be mowed, then use it. So, after my work day was completed, I was in the pasture with the tractor and trailer forking up hay. Yes, you read right, forking. Some times the old mixes with the new. The quantity is too small and the terrain too steep for a baler. So I put it away loose and by fork.Between my loads the telephone rang. It was Brandon calling to ask if they can stay until the hay is done. I asked how much was left. He replied, “Oh probably about 4 loads. Right Emily?”, he asks my sister in the background. Emily laughs a bit and says, “Something like that.” Oh for the innocence of youth. This was a gross understatement as we are about to find out! I quickly finish my hay. Then Becky and I mosey on up the road to Mom & Dad's to help. On a whim, my wife takes some food along. We detect that the task may be bigger than we realized. When we arrived on the scene, we discovered that a few neighbors showed up already to help. Somehow word had spread. This was THE CUTTING! I quickly help unload and stack the current load into the haymow. As we head out to the field, I am tipped in on the enormity of the task. It will be more than 4 loads. We find out at the end that it exceeded 10 loads. I took my smaller Massey Ferguson 240 and trailer along, just in case we need an extra trailer to load. This proved to be a good idea. As we crested the hill a sight met my eyes. Hundreds of bales strung along in neat rows that spanned about a quarter mile and they all needed to be bucked by
hand. It is a task that I enjoy so lets get to it! The other welcome sight was the mighty army of the young. There were more volunteers there in the field accompanied by the families of youngsters. Our ensemble of evening hay makers included a few farmers, an entrepreneur jackof-all trades, a national food distribution worker (who helps keep hundreds of bulk food stores in stock across America), a utility pipeline roustabout, a secretary and receptionist for a large lawn furniture distributor, a church leader that was a former management supervisor in an internationally owned factory, a retired, resettled union toolmaker from the General Motors plant in Detroit MI, and an aggressive army of elementary schoolboys on summer vacation. How is that for an interesting group pulling together toward a common goal? With all this help and only 2 wagons, we were debating whether we should go to the neighbors for another one. I asked whether they have enough man power to load those two if I take all the young'ens to the next field with my rig. The vote was unanimous, so off I went with the boys and my sister. Now let me assure you, country boys are observant. These boys sized up the situation and hurried to the trailer. Someone has to drive the ®

tractor. There were only 2 adults on our crew, my sister and I. This meant that Javon stacks the load, Emily helps buck bales up to Javon which leaves the tractor seat vacant! Three sets of eager eyes stare into mine. They tried vainly to suppress the smiles but the glistening of the eyes belied all other masking of anticipation. Well do I remember the feeling of elation to actually drive a tractor. It was decided that only one can drive so turns must be taken. I joined the lucky one at the wheel, put it into low gear, which creeps along at less than a walking pace.” Ahh, which is the clutch?”, he asks. Now I knew that he has obviously never driven one before. I tell him which it is but that all he needs to do is watch out front and stay between the bale rows. This is how all young boys learn, by assistance and support from elders. I took my place on the trailer stacking bales. For some reason this has been my place for close to 20 years now. There is an art to stacking bales so that they bind the load together without falling off on a steep incline. Years ago I stacked a load on an equipment trailer that was going to be traveling about 5 miles down a highway with a truck. I jokingly told the driver that this load was good for 60 mph. I assumed that he would be keeping the speed well below the limits because they opted to not

The next morning he laughed and said it withstood 70 mph in good condition. Not advisable. My sister and the youngsters kept me hopping and just as we were reaching the limits of a full load, here comes another tractor over the hill. It's our neighboring farmer with his tractor and wagon. Due to the fact that the other crew was well staffed, he comes down to join us. His son had stayed at the barn to help in the haymow. This is not an enviable job. It is hot, sweaty, dusty, and completely without air movement but, it needs to be done. My sister took our full load to the barn to unload. We are finally nearing the end of our labors. It is nearing 8 o'clock when we start our load. Once again the boys stare at me with a longing look. The first one that drove the tractor bravely ventures, “I could probably drive again.” I'm sure he could, but it is another's turn. So my nephew, also the grandson of the newly arrived farmer, receives instructions from Grandpa and we start off. This one has a mischievous streak in his nature and is

fun to tease. The takeoff was a bit rocky, but not quite as bad as the gymnastics that he observed when he looked back to see how I fared with the jerk. I asked wizened farmer if he wants to stack or not. He tells me to go ahead. I hurt all over to watch him handle the bales. He is a bit stoop-shouldered and shuffles when he walks. His one arm a bit stiff from Uncle Arthur. He is the worker on one side of the wagon and on the other side a nephew, a strapping lad of “going on 12”. The wagon is 6” higher than normal so I exert extra effort to help the groundsmen hoist the bales to the wagon. As we near the end of this load, farmer Grandpa says, “It is just a shadow of what it used to be. I used to swing bales with ease.” We agree that he had too many birthday cakes. But all who know him know that he has worked more than his share in his lifetime. Whew, one more load left. All hands converge to this one. My youngest brother fares not so well at the brunt of my brother-in-law's jester within. This load happens to start close to the sight of the deer stand. This year, unfortunately, that stand was used to give speed training and no meat was harvested. All would have been well and unknown except for the fact that my nephew and his father had just arrived at their stand a bit away in another field when a deer was sighted. The shot was made but missed. All that was left to see was a fleeing white flag. Silence is the best antidote to this good-natured ribbing, my brother decides. This load is completed and all hands head toward the house. Mom had left the field a bit early when she saw that the pizza delivery man would not have enough to reach around this unexpected quantity of help. Fortunately she had a Stromboli ready to bake and this along with my wife's strawberry fruit pizza that we sacrificed to the cause reached around. Most of the group had already eaten but felt a bit like a fellow years ago did. Being a bit of the laid back nature,
he also joined the neighbors for farm work one evening. He came a bit early and found the farm family still seated around the kitchen table. When asked whether he had supper already he replied with a drawl, “Yeah but I could prob'ly do it again!” Thus ensued round 2. As tiring as the work was, we all sat outside enjoying the meal and fellowship until dark and then slowly started for home. So you see that we all benefit from this bearing each other's burden in this sense. The work may be hard and dirty. Our hands and arms ache with the repeated scratching of stiff bristles of hay but we leave enriched in spirit. The generational gaps are gone and a spirit of camaraderie is uniting us for a common goal. In this case a farmer had lots of hay, over 1200 Dad told us, and a busy week. Our children learn by working with parents, neighbors, grandparents and friends that a menial task can be doubled into a blessed evening of cultivating relationships. EC CLESIASTES 5:12,
“The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.”

“The feature articles and the ads. The ads sometimes give me ideas of businesses that we might like to visit during our next day trip to Amish Country, which is my favorite thing to do.” – JUNE KNEPPER, FREMONT, OH
“This is my first time reading it. I love it!!! Can’t wait for my trip to Amish Country.”
