"The Winnowing Season" Amish Vines and Orchards, Book 2

Book Review

reviewed by Amanda Nixon • AMISH HEARTLAND CONTRIBUTOR

In this sequel to “A Season for Tending,” Cindy Woodsmall has outdone herself again! She continues the story of Rhoda Byler and the King brothers, Samuel and Jacob, as they move east and start a new Old Order Amish Community in Maine. They partner and purchase an old abandoned apple orchard in hopes to use Rhoda’s horticultural skills and Samuel’s business mind to create a successful orchard. As they prepare for this new journey, they face many challenges. Rhoda must face her Amish Community leaders one more time to explain her gift from God. Will the leaders allow her to leave out of respect or fear? This final meeting will determine it. Rhoda continues to deal with her “intuition” as she continues to have “feelings” about those around her. She hopes that a new community will free her from the visions she is having and create a much needed fresh start. Samuel’s sister, Leah, has decided to go along with the group and finds companionship in the most unlikely places. Leah continues her journey of deciding if she will remain Amish or cross over into a whole new world of Englishers. Samuel’s recent discovery of his feelings for Rhoda presents a problem as his brother, Jacob, continues to court Rhoda. However, Jacob’s past from his

rumschringe has finally caught up with him. His past may affect his future with Rhoda, but he must decide how much of his dark past he should share with her. Meanwhile Rhoda and Samuel struggle to maintain a business partnership as Samuel struggles to conceal his feelings for her. Will Orchard Bend survive the Byler/ King love triangle? Can they still keep their Amish roots as they struggle to survive on their own or will the temptations of the English be too much for this partnership? It was a pleasure to read the next chapter in this ongoing saga. Woodsmall does an excellent job of introducing new characters and building depth to current ones. +!'%4e !+4 -(+! , This month I was given the opportunity to see the most widely talked about musical, “The Confession.” Although I had not read the books, I knew the general story line of the Beverly Lewis series and I was very intrigued to see how they could turn such a serious drama into a heart-wrenching and humorous musical. I took my mother to spend an evening in luxury at the Carlisle Inn. We were definitely not disappointed by the evening performance. The actors did a wonderful job and the seating all around the stage made it easy to get lost in the drama unfolding before us. It was opening night and I shared in a conversation with a group of ladies who had traveled from a city on the west side of Ohio. They were thrilled to be spending the day in Amish country. Other people traveled from neighboring states of Indiana and Kentucky, while some even traveled from as far away as Maine and Oregon, but the winner of the farthest distance traveled went to a couple from New Zealand hoping to move to the area in the near future. Some celebrated a ladies night out, while others celebrated birthdays and anniversaries. It was a full house in the auditorium that night. Read more about “The Confession” on page 14. As a writer, I find the most enjoyable part of my job is talking with people and learning their stories. I love to be able to capture their emotions and retell their stories for others to read. In this issue I have shared with you the stories of hardworking individuals who have learned the ins and outs of the business world. Kiko’s Greenhouse developed out of one man’s tinkering with plants. After spending his time in the military as a mechanic, he decided to spend his time getting his hands dirty in a different kind of dirt. Kiko discovered a green thumb he had greased over all these years. Also in this issue, Freeman and Rhoda Mullet have spent their life selling simple, inspirational items out of their little shop. During a tough economy, the Mullet’s have discovered that a little faith is all you need in these times of hardship. They have managed to be an uplifting spirit to those around them. Neighborhood Pantry had undergone some hardships of their own, as they struggled to get their Bulk Food store up and running. Since opening their doors last year, they have received a tremendous amount of feedback from the locals who are appreciative of the everyday conveniences the store provides. As you read through this issue, you can start to piece together a theme of dedication and hard work. Stop in and show your support for these businesses as you make your travels through Amish country. They will be glad you came.

I decided to get my hands dirty with a different kind of dirt!

6

Located just east of Dalton, Kiko’s Greenhouse is a stop you don’t want to miss out on when shopping for your garden and landscaping needs. Rows of garden sculptures in every animal and figurine you can think of line the front of the store, while the inside holds a massive variety of the most fragrant and colorful flowers. Mr. Kiko himself never imagined he would be so deep in dirt; so to speak. James Kiko started his greenhouse business back in the late 1970s. “I played around with plants as a hobby,” said Kiko. He began by selling plants from his mobile home just down the road from the current location. Kiko didn’t plan on developing a green thumb, it just kind of happened upon him. “I went to school to be a mechanic,” said Kiko. After serving his time in the military as a mechanic he came home and decided to dive into a new career path.

“I decided to get my hands dirty with a different kind of dirt,” joked Kiko. It became a product of trial and error and educating himself from others in the business. He found his flowers were selling well with the local community and decided to expand. After moving to a few different locations, Kiko settled on the current property in 1986. He began to fill his greenhouses with the most vibrant and fragrant flowers he could find and delicious vegetables. “We raise 95

when he was asked if he supplied chick jars (little clay pots with holes in them to plant different plants in.)

’’

I guess it’s just been in my blood for so long. If you like what you do, you just keep doing it.

percent of the flowers and vegetable items we sell.” Walking through the greenhouse, you become overwhelmed by the variety of bold and vibrant colors and sweet smells. Purple Petunias and bright pink Begonias and much more fill the rows of the Greenhouse. Kiko soon began to explore other avenues of the greenhouse business

’’

During his search, he started to come across different sculptures that could be placed in the yard and garden. “It kind of grew out of a mistake,” joked Kiko. Along with their large selection of flowers, Kiko’s carries one of the largest selections in the area of garden and lawn sculptures, Kiko said. Some of their most popular sculptures include angels and gargoyles. These two items are especially popular for those looking for funeral settings. Benches and fountains and just about every animal you can think of covers the grounds in front of the greenhouse as well as the side yards. From small to large, if Kiko’s doesn’t have exactly what you’re looking for, he can find it and order it for you. AMISH HEARTLAND

Kiko is always excited to see returning customers and their families. “We are seeing three to four generations of customers,” said Kiko. He enjoys seeing the friendly faces of customers past and providing products to their children and grandchildren. Retirement has proven to be a busy one for Kiko and he shows no signs of slowing down. “I’ve been trying to downsize but there are just so many new items that are coming out.” Kiko just finds himself purchasing more. “Since I have retired, business has picked up,” said Kiko. When people ask about retired life Kiko responds with “I guess it’s just been in my blood for so long. If you like what you do, you just keep doing it.”

While Kiko does not see any future plans of expansion to the business, he is considering passing his business along to his son. While most would love the opportunity to pass on the family business and settle into retirement, Kiko just can’t seem to let go just yet. “If you want to see a good selection of lawn ornaments all in one place, come to Kiko’s,” said Kiko. His large selection is likely to have just what you need. Kiko’s Greenhouse is located at 15579 Lincoln Way West in Dalton. Kiko’s is open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Mon.-Fri.; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat. and 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Sun. For more information call 330-832-8698.

“The Confession” Returns

WR WKH &DUOLVOH ,QQ LQ 6XJDUFUHHN

Spend the day and night at the Carlisle Inn STORY BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

The hea heartwrenching yet humorous musical, ‘The Confession,’ has returned for another year to the Carlisle Inn in Sugarcreek. Based on Beverly Lewis’ Heritage of Lancaster County Trilogy, the musical combines the three books (“The Shunning,” “The Confession,” and “The Reckoning”) into one unique musical.

The Play To an outsider, Hickory Hollow appears to be just another peaceful little Amish Community. “There’s something ‘bout a life that’s plain” and there seems to be some secrets amongst a few of the plain people in the community. The musical opens with Katie Lapp (played by Kristina Kennedy) and Daniel Fisher (played by Bobby Hall) sharing a romantic exchange 14

over a song they wrote together. Singing and playing music other than the approved hymn’s is frowned upon in the community and the first secret of Hickory Hollow is presented to us. Secrets continue to unfold as Katie finds herself in the attic of her parents house. While digging through some old things from her childhood she discovers a beautiful, satin baby gown with the name Katherine Mayfield embroidered into it. Samuel (played by Kyle Whitney) and Rebecca Lapp (played by Kate Salsbury) are forced to tell their daughter the truth. Katie Lapp is really Katherine Mayfield and was

adopted by the Amish couple after losing a child of their own. Katie (or Katherine) feels she has lost her identity and needs to find out who she really is. She sets out to find her birth mother and the Amish Bishop has no choice but to shun her from the community. Meanwhile, Laura Mayfield (played by Alison Dixon) is spending her last days confined to a wheelchair as her health declines. She longs to find the daughter she gave up years ago before she goes to meet her heavenly father. Her up-to-no-good husband, Dylan Bennet (played by Matthew Walker,) has big plans for the money his wife will leave behind once she passes. Dylan over hears his wife telling her dear friend and housekeeper, Rosie Taylor (played by Carrie Greenberg), that she hopes to find her daughter and leave all of her possessions and inheritance to her. Quickly Dylan devises a plan and hires Allyson Cairns (played by Jenna Haimes) from a local talent agency to play Katherine Mayfield. After tracking her mother to a most wealthy estate in New York, the real Katherine Mayfield shows up at the Mayfield-Bennet Mansion. She is quickly rushed into the home by Rosie and her husband Fulton Taylor

(played by Gregory McClelland) only to discover that she is not being welcomed as the long lost daughter or Laura Mayfield, but hired help. As the imposter Amish girl continues to reveal how much she doesn’t know about the Amish lifestyle, Katie is quick to correct her causing Rosie to be suspicious of her true identity. As the story continues to unfold, Allyson feels she can no longer play this imposter role and deceive Laura and chooses to leave the home. Discovering his plan is failing, Dylan flees the home and the truth is finally revealed. The Carlisle Inn is very pleased to bring back ‘The Confession’ for a second year. According to Mike Miller, Inn Keeper at Carlisle Inn, last year’s musical attracted around 18,000 people with more than half of the performances selling out. ‘The Confession’ the musical was first performed in Shipshewana, Ind. at the Blue Gate Theater. Kristina Schlabach, theater manager, and Miller wanted to bring something new and exciting to the theater at Carlisle Inn. “Amish romance novels were becoming very popular,” explained Schlabach. So the timing of the musical worked

out well and “it is something that has been wonderful for this area and has something for everyone.” The heart wrenching moments shared between Katie and her Amish mother after learning the truth of her adoption combined with powerful musical numbers left many wiping their eyes in the audience. Many were also wiping their eyes from laughter during the musical number “let me explain,” as it seemed the hired actress playing Katherine Mayfield was drawing a lot of attention with her lack of Amish knowledge. “People come into the show thinking it’s a church-like musical,” said Miller. “They are pleasantly surprised with the professionalism of the play,” said Schlabach. In fact, the actors who audition for these main roles were among 3,000 other professionals hoping for a lead role in ‘The Confession.’ The musical was presented as a theaterin-the-round or arena theater, which means audience members sat on all four sides of the stage and actors performed in the middle projecting to all sides. This style of theater really made the audience feel that they were a part of the play no matter where they sat in the theater. Overall, the idea of a musical based on an Amish novel is most intriguing and managed to draw a full house for opening night. People were visiting from all over Ohio, West Virginia, Oregon and Maine and even one couple from New Zealand.

Plan to stay the night… So you have decided to attend an evening performance of ‘The Confession.’ Unless you are a local, driving an hour or more home may not be something you want to do at 10 p.m. With the theater being located in a hotel, having a place to stay couldn’t be more convenient. 16 1 6

The Furniture Heartland www.furnitureheartland.com

HAVE A “MISSION” THIS SUMMER ission furniture was a name first coined by Joseph McHugh, a New York furniture manufacturer and retailer, to describe his line of straight line rustic style furniture that he began producing in 1895. The mission style furniture design was based on a chair that had been designed for the Swedenborgian Church of New Jerusalem in San Francisco. The word “mission” references the Spanish missions throughout colonial California. The style became increasingly popular following the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901. Mission furniture caught on as a generic term for the style of furniture and also the European term “arts and crafts” was used. Mission style is a design that emphasizes simple horizontal and vertical lines and flat panels that accentuate the grain of the wood (usually oak).

M

28

This style was also part of the Arts and Crafts movement which was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and the romanticism that surrounded craftsmen that took pride in his own personal handiwork. The Arts and Crafts movement occurred both with the British and in the Americas, and it is great to know that furniture that dated back into such important eras of history are still popular today. The irony of the mission style furniture icon of the Arts and Crafts movement has been reversed of its original meaning in that it is now mass produced and merchandised, and thus loosing some of its uniqueness that people originally sought. Nevertheless, it is still a beautiful piece of furniture designed as such to add nice lines and art to a person’s home. By recognizing the mission style, homeowner’s recognize the style that has lasted through the times. Mission arts and crafts has blended well from the 19th century all the way to the current 21st century in terms of interior design and décor. Characterized by clean, straight lines, geometric shapes, natural elements and handcrafted pieces, common materials associated with this decorating style include wrought iron, stained glass and hardwood.

The Gospel Shop

A simple store filled with simple things! STORY & PHOTOS BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

F

reeman and Rhoda Mullet share a love for the simple, inspirational things. Their small store reflects their unique and spiritual interests. The store can serve as an uplifting experience for those feeling down in this rough economy. Inspirational in words and uplifting Bible verses w can be found scrolled on picture ca frames, ffr r coffee mugs and even T-shirts tthroughout th h the store. Rhoda’s father started the business tthat has become the Gospel Shop, th back b a in 1966. “We lived just up the sstreet and sold a few things from our st home,” said Rhoda. At the time the ho was called Stutzman Gospel sshop h Records and sold a few box cards, R bibles and Gospel records. bi b i In 1967, the Stutzman’s determined they needed a new location for their growing store and moved into a building down the street and three years later moved again into the building which currently Alphorn Amish Gifts in downtown Sugarcreek. One day, Freeman looked out the window of the store and saw a for sale sign on the building across the street, explained Rhoda. It was Hostetler’s Dried Goods at the time and sold fabrics and sewing items. After moving into the store in 1987, Rhoda’s father decided to rename the store simply The Gospel Shop. “Dad wanted a plain and simple name for the store,” said Rhoda. “My dad worked in the office until his late 80s here in the store,” said 32 3 2

Rhoda. Because Rhoda had spent the longest of her siblings working in the store it made sense for her husband to buy the store for themselves. They have been running the store together ever since. “We started out with Bibles, books, cards and box cards,” said Rhoda. As they expanded their business, they started to include small inspirational gift items, from Christian t-shirts and books, to pictures and mugs with Bible verses. They also sell small music boxes and children’s toys as well as Christian D.V.D.’s and C.D.’s. “All of those things that kind of fit together is what we sell,” said Rhoda. Accessories such as scarves are available in a variety of colors and patterns. The Gospel Shop also carries a line of Bella Taylor purses and recently started carrying a line of Montana West, western purses. “We try to keep up with the latest trends,” said Freeman.

With their supply of Bibles and inspirational books, The Gospel Shop breaks away from their religious and inspirational selection and also carries some of the latest Amish fiction novels. “The ladies come in here with their lists waiting on the next book in their series,” said Rhoda. “I love to read and see all the new books that come in,” said Rhoda. She enjoys picking out books to sell in her store in hopes that the customers will love them. In the little village of Sugarcreek, Freeman and Rhoda have seen many stores come and go and they have

been fortunate to keep their little business going strong. “The economy is tough. Just when you’re ready to give up, people come in wishing they had a store just like this in their area,” said Freeman. It’s inspiring to them and keeps them going. The economy has also led many people in to their store looking for something to lift their spirits. “With the economy being rough we have sold more Bibles and inspirational wall hangings which is pretty interesting to see,” said Rhoda. “We spend a lot of time finding things for people,” said Rhoda. “People call in looking for specific things and we try our best to order it for them.” Every year the Gospel Shop holds their Anniversary sale in March, a PreInventory Sale the last week of the year and participate in a Moonlight Madness sale in July and November. One of their biggest sales is the Fall 34

Garage Sale which runs for three days in October. “This will be our 17th year doing this sale,” said Rhoda. “It’s a pretty huge event for us.” “Some people even plan their vacations around it,” said Freeman. During the garage sale they sell items from the old garage behind their store and Rhoda and some of the women bake cookies. Women arrive early and line up for the deals Rhoda explained. Both Freeman and Rhoda agree the best part about their business is getting to meet new people and chatting with the customers that come through the store. They have a good relationship with the community and the locals. The Gospel Shop is located at 112 E. Main Street in downtown Sugarcreek. The Gospel Shop is open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Mon.-Thurs. and Sat., and 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Fri. For more information call 330-852-4223.
