Amish Cooking Class Cookbook By WANDA E. BRUNSTET TER Reviewed by EMILY RUMES Amish Heartland Contributor
W
anda E. Brunstetter’s delightful new books are a must have for fans of the Amish Cooking Class line. With recipes like, “When-The-Bishop-Calls Casserole” and “Hootenanny Bread/Pancake” you’ll feel like you’re cooking in the kitchen right alongside the characters you’ve come to know and love. The Celebration, the third and final installment in the fiction series, follows character staples Lyle and Heidi Troyer as they take in two orphaned children whose parents were killed in a car accident. Hoping to help the children adapt and make friends, Heidi decides to hold a series of cooking classes for kids. But kids are always accompanied by an adult – and that is where the troubles begin. In addition to the fictional book, the Amish Cooking Class Cookbook is a fun companion to add to your collection, taking the reader back to cooking basics and revisiting characters and recipes from the bestselling series. Heidi Troyer, her students and other contributors share over 200 practical recipes, along with tips to keep things running smoothly. There are also insights into the Amish home like what the average morning routine looks like, the importance of canning and joy they find in sharing their skills with others. The cookbook is beautiful, featuring full-color photos throughout and a spiral binding for convenience in the kitchen. The author, Wanda E. Brustetter, is descended from members of the Anabaptist faith and her novels are based on
personal research intended to accurately portray the Amish way of life. Her books have been praised by many in the Amish community, giving her credit for providing readers with a deeper understanding of the people and their customs. When Wanda visits her friends, she finds herself drawn to their peaceful lifestyle, sincerity and close family ties. Both of these books will inspire and teach you – and what a delicious lesson it will be!

TRANSPORT FOR CHRIST
Transport For Christ International is an organization that provides an effective ministry to truck drivers throughout the world wherever there is a significant trucking industry. The aim of the organization is to lead truck drivers as well as the trucking community to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. The goal is that no trucker should have to drive more than a day without being able to find a TFC Mobile Chapel. TFC is about building relationships, sharing faith and providing a place for drivers to regenerate physically, mentally and spiritually. Plan now to attend the Ohio Truck Show and Auction on July 10 at Kidron and Mt. Hope. Parade begins in Kidron at 7:15 and trucks will begin to assemble at 5 PM. Pulled Pork Sandwiches along with Hot Dogs and homemade ice cream will be available at Kidron. The Hart brothers will be giving a bluegrass concert in the Mt Hope Event Center at 8:30 after the parade. 330-465-4587 | transportforchrist.org

Back in 2003, Bowman Tractor made the decision to sell their company to the Schlabachs, and thus the company was renamed Holmes Power Equipment, first opening its doors in 2004. The service side at Holmes Power Equipment works together to execute top of the line quality on each piece that comes with their “four eyes on service” method. The Toro TurfMaster lawnmower at Holmes Power Equipment is the perfect piece of equipment to help customers finish the job faster this spring. A few extra inches of deck can save a lot of mowing time, and that's exactly what you get with Toro's new TurfMaster™ 30" walk-behind. It covers more ground in less time than smaller models, yet it's easy to handle. Their Blade Stop System (BSS) allows the operator to disengage blades without completely shutting down the engine. Every component of Toro’s equipment, from top to bottom, is built for heavy use in rough conditions, from curbs to trailers to multiple operators. It's professionalgrade toughness with a professional-quality cut and a major boost for overall productivity. Holmes Power Equipment also sells Holland Grills,

Grill Dome was the first company to offer warranties on its ceramic components and still offers the best warranty in their category including a 5 year warranty on gaskets. A custom indoor deck display was designed by Holmes Power Equipment in order to showcase grilling products at their best. You can see how they would look out on your deck and imagine taking them home and using them to cook up a dinner for the family on a warm, spring evening. Their main equipment sales for March will be lawnmowers and grills, as area homeowners and landscapers are ready to get outside and enjoy the spring thaw. This winter the snowblowers have done well for Holmes Power Equipment and generators by Honda are another product that stays consistent across the seasons. More unique products on hand in the store include the Cant Hook Log Rollers and other useful supplies for tree and brush work. –FROM THE DESK OF JAVON MILLER– Seth's Uncle: Part I Submitted by JAVON MILLER | Amish Heartland Contributor I will share a story in this issue that I wrote for our school. We fathers take turns weekly to have a short devotional reading for the school. This might be anything from a portion of scripture to a good story that has a character building moral. I was recently intrigued by Acts 21-23 of the Bible. These passages show what the early church endured. Acts 23:14-24 focuses on the role of a young lad in the whole scenario. No one is too young to be effective in life. We are all needed. Although the story is fictional, it is based as closely as possible on the few facts that we can glean from the above passages. My hopes were that we can bring to life, a few sketchy details that we can all relate to. I hope you can see what the first Christian church faced along with some of the morals that are woven into the story. This was the beginning of our belief, Christianity.
Y
oung Seth was excited. His mother, Rhonda, had just told him that Uncle Saul was coming for a visit. Seth had not seen Saul for a few years. Saul was an older brother to Seth’s Mom. He had never married, so he spent quite a bit of time with Seth. He was a favorite uncle.

Seth remembered the happy days that Saul would take him to market. At the market, Saul often bought little toys like a Jaw harp or Yo-yo and a snack of candied figs or dried fruit. It was always good and what made it special was that Saul had given it. The only bad part was that Saul was an important man to the community and church. He was often distracted by questions or lively discussions at the market place. Saul was a very smart man. He went to Gamaliel’s School. This was reserved for only the brightest scholars of the church. Here they learned all the Laws of Moses and the laws that ruled the church. Saul graduated at the top of this class, so he was often greeted by the leaders of the Pharisees or priests when he was at the market. If Saul spoke, the people listened and respected his ideas. Seth was often bored with these discussions but he still respectfully listened in when Saul and his friends talked. He wanted to learn all he could from Saul. Seth wanted to be just like him! The market was a busy place and Seth did not want to be separated from Saul so he pressed close to his side and waited. He was often rewarded with a gentle squeeze on the shoulder as Saul spoke, just so that Seth knew Saul appreciated his patience.
Then came this Jesus from Nazareth! All this changed. Their whole world was turned upside down. These boring talks of laws and rules soon became heated. Why, one week he charged into the temple courtyard and tipped over tables of money from the money changers. He even had a whip in his hand and had it whistling as he drove them all out of the temple. People couldn’t get money changed to temple coins or buy sacrificial animals. He even called them Thieves and robbers, Saul said. Saul and his friends were very upset. This man was trying to change the way that they worshiped. He was saying that he was the long-awaited Messiah. How could this be? He was a simple carpenter and from Nazareth at that, the worst of all society, aside from those dirty Gentiles and Samaritans! Seth knew the story by heart. He was not old enough to remember the happening but Saul and his friends retold the ridiculousness of it often enough. Then finally they got the Romans to kill him on the cross. Saul and his friends thought life would now be easy. It would return as usual. Not so! The grave was guarded by soldiers and still his followers stole in and got the body while the soldiers slept. Something didn’t make sense to Seth. He knew that usually soldiers that did not do their jobs right were killed. But Saul and his friends, along with the priests, paid off the soldiers to say that he was stolen. The priests somehow convinced the governor that all was well. Then of all things, one day, Saul said, his followers were talking to a large crowd of people and an odd thing happened. There were people present that were scattered from Alexandria in Africa all the way up into Asia. Seventeen different countries! And what was unreal was
that they all heard the men speak in their own language. Soon one of the chief men of these Followers of The Way, Peter, was healing sick, blind and lame people. The cripples came from far away to be healed by him. The death of this Jesus just absolutely exploded this new movement. This had to be stopped. Suppose God’s Chosen would lose their freedoms under Rome’s rule? These new Followers of The Way were no longer adding money to the temple treasury, Saul said. The leaders of The Way accused the Priests of being dishonest! This had to stop. Seth well remembered, even though he was very young, how Saul glowed when he came back from meeting with the Sanhedrin one day. He stopped in on the way home to tell the good news. He had an official letter of permission from the Synagogue to take captive anyone who followed the teaching of this Way. He was commissioned, due to his diligence, to cover all the Roman Empire and lead any false Jews back in chains. This would surely stop the movement. Seth also painfully remembered the one day when he was six years old. He was following Saul and they met up with some friends. All at once a loud uproar erupted and men began to throw their coats to Saul. They picked up rocks and began to throw them at a man. Seth ran home in a panic. “They are killing a man out in the street!’” he cried to his mother. “Why are they doing this?” “I don’t know,” replied mother, with tears in her eyes. “Life was so peaceful before this Jesus came. I am afraid that these new Followers of The Way will destroy our whole community and way of life. Saul is earnestly trying to preserve the church, Seth. I don’t like that he is so

involved, but the Sanhedrin feel he is most qualified. It appears to be right, but how can so much good and healing be wrong? Maybe someday you will understand it better. It is terrible to kill someone just for believing differently.” “Mother!” exclaimed young Seth, “You are not one of those are you? I heard Saul tell his friends how wicked they are.” “Yes, son,” said Mother, “But remember, these are grandmothers and grandfathers, moms and dads, they have children. Think of these poor children. It is so unnecessary, it makes me sad. These people are peaceful. They are not trying to hurt us. What makes the Sanhedrin so angry is that the people no longer pay as much temple tax. These taxes are so heavy and make some rich and others poor. I just don’t know what to think.” This was all in the past. Seth was excited because Saul had changed. A bright light knocked him to his knees on his way to Damascus and ever since Paul was blind for three days, he was a changed man. He had a vision and Jehovah spoke to him. Saul was now a missionary preacher. He traveled all over the Roman Empire teaching people about The Way! Saul had not been to see Seth’s family for a number of years. Now he was coming to visit!

This was all in the past. Seth was excited because Saul had changed. A bright light knocked him to his knees on his way to Damascus and ever since Paul was blind for three days, he was a changed man. All they knew about him was from letters that he sent occasionally. He now signed his letters Paul for some reason. In Seth’s eyes, Uncle Saul was exciting. Why he traveled all over the world by boat, walking, and even by camel train. He was friends with rich and powerful people like rulers, merchants, and even some governors met with him. He was also friends with slaves, women, and even some Gentiles, and that took some getting used to. But no matter, Saul was coming. Seth’s family had now also joined these Followers of The Way. They were all looking forward to having Paul teach them in person. They were interested to hear what all was being done in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Seth looked forward to going to market with Paul. He wanted to tell his friends that this was his uncle who traveled all over to preach. He pictured himself beside Paul, surrounded by a crowd, and discussing the laws as in years gone by. He was Paul’s nephew. Paul was important! When Paul showed up for supper, some brethren came along that traveled with Paul. They said that an old man named Agabus had prophesied in Caesarea that Paul would be put in jail and killed if he came to Jerusalem. Agabus told Paul not to come, but Paul wanted to be back for a little bit. Now Seth was scared! The next day Paul met with the elders of the church. Paul explained how Jesus was coming to the Gentiles as well as the Hebrews. Gentiles were confessing in the Name of God and even casting out devils and healing sickness through the Holy Spirit. “However,” Paul warned, “Rumor says that I am forsaking the Law of Moses. This is false! Jesus fulfilled these prophesies. To prove it, I will partake in the feast that is coming up. I will participate in the seven day purification and then offer up my thanks.” Seth followed Paul wherever he could. All seemed peaceful and calm and Seth was happy. Paul spent a lot of time preaching and talking about happenings within the churches scattered abroad. He always had a willing audience. All seemed well. That is, until those Jews from Asia showed up! All at once a loud, heavily accented voice boomed across the temple courtyard, “Men of Israel
Saul,” he thought. “What have you done wrong?” When Paul started speaking, the crowd hushed momentarily. Paul told them the same things that he had written in his letters to Seth’s family. He explained that he had persecuted the Followers of The Way. He told them about the bright light, being blind, and all that happened since. He finished with the commandment that God gave him to preach to the Gentiles. At this the Jews yelled, “This man is not fit to live. Away with him!” They tore off their clothes and threw dust in the air by the handfuls. Seth could not breathe or see Paul. He turned and ran for home. Look for Part II of this series in the April issue of Amish Heartland.

help us! This is a wicked man. He is traipsing all over the known world and teaching Jews to forsake the Laws of Moses. Why, he even defiled the temple by bringing Greeks into it! Yeah, our holy temple defiled by those dirty swine, the Gentiles!” Seth’s heart leaped into his throat! Who was this wicked man? What was going to happen? Then Seth saw; it was his beloved Uncle Paul! They had him by the arms and were pulling him. They would pull him to pieces right here. Men yelled, women screamed, and children cried as the crowd scurried about to see or help. The dust was choking Seth. He jumped up and thought, “I must get Father to help Paul.” They were beating Paul now. Seth turned and ran. Bump!! He stopped short to see what he ran into. It was a swarthy Roman soldier with flashing eyes who yelled, “Ho ho, out of my way you little pipsqueak!” Seth jumped to the side. “Uhh,” he grunted as his knee crashed into another soldier. He huddled in a corner and nursed his knee a moment and then peeked out into the street to try and get help. All he saw was the Roman soldiers that came running from every direction. Poor Seth stood frozen in fear. The soldiers dashed into the courtyard. They had their hands on their swords and spears. “Stand back, out of the way. Stop this ruckus!” They yelled as they muscled their way through the crowd. Anyone that tried to resist was soon pushed back with a hefty jab in the ribs or a threatening glance at the spear. “Drop those clubs and rocks or we will use these,” they pointed their swords at the men who were closest to Paul. Here came the Captain, “Tie this man in chains and see that he does not escape,” he bellowed above the pandemonium. “On the double or else.” The Jews were still angrily milling around and yelling. “Quiet!” roared the captain. “What is this all about? Don’t you know that this uproar could cause me to lose my job, and you, your life and freedom? What has this man done to create such a confusion?” Jewish voices rose in a frenzy again with many accusations but no answers! All began yelling and screaming again. The captain saw how dangerous the situation was, so he commanded Paul be taken into the castle. Seth was trying to edge closer to Paul to see him. Seth saw Paul turn slightly and say something to the captain. The captain looked startled for a moment and then nodded slightly. Paul turned and raised his hand. It was then that Seth saw Paul’s bloody nose, black eye, and puffy lips. Tears squeezed from his eyes, “Dear Uncle
