ot air balloons are scheduled to fill the skies over Ashland once more as the 27th annual BalloonFest returns to Freer Field from Thursday, June 29 to Saturday,

July 1. And as always, the July Fourth holiday also offers entertainment and events for car enthusiasts, patriotic music fans, homemade ice cream lovers and others. Returning are all the old favorites, including the quilt show, ice cream social, concert at Brookside Park and, of course, fireworks. While the three days at Freer Field are packed with all kinds of family friendly activities, as always the centerpiece of the annual event will be the hot air balloons — 29 of them this year. “We have some new balloons, some returning balloons and some that haven’t been here for quite a while that are coming back,” said event chair Misty Miller. “And we have two balloons who have been to every one.” The two pilots participating in their 27th BalloonFest are Michael Emich with Updraft and Alex Jonard with Zee-nith. Weather permitting, balloons will take to the sky for the first time about 6:30 p.m. Thursday with the annual flight for members of the local media. At 9:15 p.m., the balloons will line the launch field, firing up their burners to glow against the night sky accompanied by music. But before the main attraction of the balloons, several opening day activities are planned. The Miller Hawkins Fresh Foods Backyard Barbecue gets it all under way from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday on the west side of Freer Field serving a menu of freshly made food from Charcoal Mafia. The Kids Fun Zone, featuring pony rides, laser tag, inflatables and more will be open 4 to 9:30 p.m. Other food concessions will be open 6 to 10 p.m. The first of three nights of live music will feature the band Tom’s Kitchen Table with a mix of country and rock from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The Roadhouse Band will take the main stage at 5 p.m. Friday to play a variety of music. Saturday’s musical entertainment is SOBOS (Some of the Best Old Songs) from Wooster offering classic rock from the 1970s and ’80s. “We’ve got some new bands and some fan favorites,” Miller said. “Roadhouse Band is back by popular demand.” Balloon enthusiasts will get to enjoy their morning coffee with a sampling of balloons as Friday’s activities start early with a fun flight at 7 a.m.The fun zone and food concessions open again at 4 p.m. The balloons return for a sponsor flight at 6:30 p.m. with a second balloon glow encounter and balloon glow capping Friday’s activities. Weather permitting, the balloons will take to the skies early Saturday with the Donley Ford Lincoln of Ashland competition flight at 7 a.m. Saturday is packed with activities as registration opens at 11 a.m. for a corn hole tournament that begins at noon. Food concessions open at noon with the fun zone attractions available beginning at 1 p.m. BalloonFest fans will get a chance to meet the balloon pilots up close during a meet and greet planned 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Park Street. Safety fun will feature a Metro LifeFlight helicopter, K-9 demonstrations, Ashland Fire Department truck display and child fingerprinting with Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Angie Hamilton from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
One new event scheduled this year from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday on Park Street is a Donley Ford Drive 4UR Community. For every test drive taken, Donley Ford will donate $20 to BalloonFest up to $6,000. Saturday’s activities wrap up with a competition flight at 6:30 p.m., balloon glow encounter at 8:15 p.m. and the final balloon glow at 9:15 p.m. While the festival itself will be over, pilots are scheduled for one last competition flight Sunday morning. “We have six flights and three glows scheduled,” Miller said. “We usually get three or four flights off and sometimes more. It just depends on the weather.” But Freer Field won’t be the only place to have fun in Ashland. Ashland County Cloud Chasers will pilot their remote-controlled planes at a Fun Fly planned to start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1 at Laughery Field, 685 U.S. 42 near the city’s wastewater treatment plant. Later on Saturday, at 1 p.m., the Push ’em Pull ’em parade of peoplepowered conveyances will begin its trip up Center Street starting from Substance Church on South Street. Ashland County Historical Society will play host to its annual ice cream social and silent auction from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 2. The afternoon offers self-guided tours through museum buildings, musical entertainment and, of course, ice cream, cake and lemonade. Ashland Symphony Orchestra’s popular outdoor Pops in the Park concert will be 8 p.m. Sunday, July 2 at Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell at Brookside Park, with a program of classic patriotic pieces and other popular tunes. The city’s annual fireworks show will light up the sky starting about 9:45 p.m.Tuesday, July 4 at Ashland High School’s Community Stadium. And on the weekend after BalloonFest, the Old Uniontown Quilt Guild Show will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 7 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, July 8 at Park Street Brethren Church. This year’s theme is Quilts, Neighbors and Friends. That weekend also includes classic cars, games and a chalk art contest are the order of the day on Saturday, July 8, as two annual events kick off in and around downtown Ashland.The Dream Cruise & Car Show is revving up for its seventh year, and the sixth annual Kids Fest is also on hand for family fun. For those who would rather participate than watch, the summer holiday offers Southview Grace Brethren Church’s Wifflefest, the Red White and Blue Scramble at Brookside Golf Course and a BalloonFest 5K run and walk. Wifflefest is in its 18th year. The tournament, with divisions for several age groups, begins Friday, June 30. The event’s special guest speaker this year is former Cleveland Indians slugger Andre Thornton. His talk is scheduled 10:15 a.m. Sunday, July 2 at the church. Golfers can compete in the Red,White and Blue Scramble Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2 at Brookside Golf Course. The BalloonFest 5K run and walk returns this year with registration at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 1 at Community Stadium.The course meanders by Freer Field, Ashland University and back to Ashland High School. And anyone willing to take the short trip to the southern part of the county can find even more fun things to do. The Loudonville Car Show will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 1 in the village’s downtown. Along with the car show, the Loudonville Antique Festival is scheduled 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 1 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 2. he Fourth of July is often celebrated by cookouts and fireworks, but in Ashland, competitive sports in the name of fun can also rule the holiday weekend. 2017 is no different, with mainstays like the Southview Grace Brethren Wifflefest and the Ashland Brookside Golf Course Red White and Blue Scramble both coming back. Wifflefest is in its 18th year and will have four different tournaments for four different age groups. A dedication service will take place Sunday at 10:15 a.m.The tournament begins Friday, June 30, with a high school tournament for students entering 9th grade through 12th grade. Saturday will have an Elementary School tournament for students entering 3rd and 5th grades and 4 p.m., a middle school tournament for kids entering 6th through 8th grades. On the Fourth of July an adult tournament will kick off at 9 a.m. with a community picnic at 6 p.m. and a concert with the Kroc Center Band at 7 p.m. “It’s unique, we do what we can do,” said Southview pastor Mark Abel. “(Wifflefest) is patriotic, centrally located in the Ashland community, people are proud

ach year, as balloons populate the sky for BalloonFest, other pilots take to the air. These are the Ashland County Cloud Chasers, piloting their remote planes for their “Fun Fly,” a way for remote control pilots to introduce the hobby to others, said president Denny McKay.

The Cloud Chasers hold the event every year during the Fourth of July weeked, this year holding it Saturday, July 1. The Fun Fly will be held at the Cloud Chasers’ Laughery Field, 685 North US 42, by the wastewater treatment plant. “It’s an attraction for visitors to see,” McKay said. “People come in and drive and around and see us.When the balloons aren’t doing anything it’s something fun in the air.”
More than Cloud Chasers members’ aircraft will fill the sky for the Cloud Chasers “Fun Fly” — so will aircraft from the Galion Eagle Squadron and the Doylestown Barnstormers.

There will be a pilot meeting at 9:30 a.m. and then the planes, some Styrofoam, or wood, will take to the skies. Two outside organizations will be joining the Cloud Chasers — the Galion Eagle Squadron and the Doylestown Barnstormers. They will be doing tricks with their plans and 3-D Flying, where the controllers direct their planes to hover and do more complicated maneuvers. Anyone who wants to try their own hand at flying can partner with an experienced pilot and use a “buddy box,” which allows a pilot to jump in if a beginner gets to close to crashing a plane. “I like to get other people interested in it, and the (buddy box) is a way to do that,” McKay said. Andre ‘Thunder’ Thornton, is a Cleveland Indians Hall-of-Famer, playing ten of his fourteen seasons in the major leagues with the Tribe. He was honored in 1979 with the Roberto Clemente Award, was a two-time All-Star and received the coveted Silver Slugger Award in 1984. Thornton also speaks and ministers to groups nation-wide.
The Kroc Center Big Band came into existence in March of 2009 and is the premier performing group at the Ashland Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. The Big Band samples many different jazz artists, and will be playing some patriotic and gospel music as well.

ince its beginning 27 years ago, Ashland BalloonFest has attracted thousands annually to Freer Field with its array of balloon flights, races, glows and more. Running from June 29 through July 1, this year’s festival boasts 29 balloons of numerous sizes, shapes and colors. “We have some longtime pilots,” BalloonFest chairperson Misty Miller said. “We have two that have been to every BalloonFest.” Michael Emich with his balloon Updraft and Alex Jonard with Zee-nith have come every year and many others have come for several years. Some pilots are returning with their balloons after a couple year’s hiatus such as Christopher DiMichele with Sky Berry, and Benjamin Miller with Littlest Angel. There are some new pilots and balloons too, like Mark Woodard’s Sarayu, Justin Cox’s Tarzan, and Tom Mullinax’s Bad Habit. “Each one has something different,” Miller said. It’s just an unbelievable experience.” Saturday balloon rides continue with two Donley Ford Lincoln of Ashland Balloon Competitions. Starting at 7 a.m. watch pilots compete in a race to earn points by reaching a marked spot on the field. Setting up in and outside town, pilots determine the best takeoff location to reach the field and drop a marked bean bag over the spot in hopes of being the closest. Those who enjoy the balloon liftoffs will want to stick around for the Ashland TimesGazette Balloon Glow. Every evening at 9:15 when the balloons have made their way back to the launch field, balloons are blown up once more for an interactive display choreographed to music, or “glow-ography” as the festival team calls it. During each song radio crew cues the pilots in to let them know when to shimmer and blink, providing a spectacular show to see. Miller’s favorite is Dueling Banjos with one side glowing in contrast to the other and the bounce between the glowing half. For special VIP access, tickets are available to the Balloon Glow Encounter. For $12.50 apiece or $50 for four, the encounter offers a chance to enter the launch field an hour prior to the glow to get a sneak peak of the happenings inside the launch field. The ticket includes one parking pass, four Pepsi products, launch field entry for four people and an official BalloonFest souvenir. “This gives them a chance to get a little bit closer to the balloons and experience it a little bit differently than everyone else,” Miller said. Loudonville Will Be Busy
Around July 4th Holiday

eautiful Central Park and downtown Loudonville will be the focal point of major holiday activity over the Fourth of July weekend, with most activities taking place on Saturday, July 1. The village will host its 18th Annual Loudonville Car Show, one of the biggest and best in Ohio, on July 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. With good weather, an average of over 500 cars register for this event, which multiple times has been rated as the best downtown car show in Ohio by Crusin’ Times Magazine, the journal of car shows in Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The car show sprawls across the downtown, from Spring Street east through Central Park all the way to Union Street, a four block area, with cars also parked a half a block north and south of Main Street, onto Water, Market and Wood streets. One year, show overflow filled a portion of the C.E. Budd school parking lot off South Wood Street. “In my opinion, Loudonville’s is second only to the much larger Good Guys Car Show in Columbus among car shows statewide,” frequent car show participant Steve Brown of Newark said. “It features a great mix of cars, quality cars. According to Valerie Spreng of the sponsoring Loudonville-Mohican Chamber of Commerce, 16 vendors have registered for the annual festival as of last week. All sorts of antiques will be displayed in the southeast and southwest quadrants of Central Park, with classic cars parked on the streets around them. ach year, Ashland’s fireworks get bigger, and this year is no exception. So said Keith Boales, who sets the fireworks off every year. This year he’ll light the sky on Tuesday, July 4, around 9:45 p.m, at the Ashland Community Stadium. Boales takes pride in shooting off the fireworks on the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, effectively the birth of the United States as its own country, free from Britain. To celebrate the day is important, he said. “We’re celebrating the birth of the nation, July 4,” Boales said. “We’re doing the July 4 fireworks on July 4 (for that reason).” While Boales is the one firing the fireworks off, the Rotary Club of Ashland is sponsoring the fireworks show. “The rotary raises most of the money, they work hard for this,” he said. The show is expected to go about 15 minutes, ending around 10 p.m. Prime seating for the firework show is at Ashland’s Community Stadium. or Ashland Symphony Orchestra, Pops in the Park is the perfect patriotic ending to the city’s annual BalloonFest celebration. The popular outdoor concert will be 8 p.m. Sunday, July 2 at Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell at Brookside Park, and features a program of classic patriotic pieces and other popular music. “It’s free and people know they will get a nice variety of patriotic music,” symphony executive director Martha Buckner said about Pops in the Park. “It’s been a tradition for a long time.” Under the direction of conductor Arie Lipsky, the program will begin, as always, with “The Star Spangled Banner.” The musical program also includes “Gershwin by George!” arranged by Jerry Brubaker; “Festival Overture” by Dudley Buck; “The Thunderer March” by John Philip Sousa; “Armed Forces Salute,” arranged by Bob Lowden, with narration by Jane Roland, administrator, Ashland County Veterans Service Office; and “The March from ‘1941’ ” by John Williams. ince 1988 the Old Uniontown Quilt Guild Show has provided an opportunity for quilt makers and admirers to enjoy a special display of quilts from around the area. This year’s show will be Friday, July 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Park Street Brethren Church. This year’s theme of Quilts, Neighbors and Friends reflects the message that all are welcome to come. Admission is $4 a person. Children 12 years old and younger are admitted for free. guild members and non-members from in and around Ashland County. “There’s over 100 entries so far, which includes all different sizes,” show organizer Marcia Puster said. The church will be packed full of quilts ranging from nine different categories: bed, wall-hanging, miniature, baby quilts, modern, artistic and lap throws made by members and nonmembers, and row quilts and challenge quilts made by guild members. This year’s challenge quilt design was to make a wallhanging quilt no longer than 20 inches, using at least five different materials. “It will be interesting to see how everyone has taken that one pattern and changed it to be their own,” Puster said. Viewers may vote on the winners of each category as well as observe the winners from last year. The show will also have demonstrations from guild members to inspire and offer ideas. Vendors Little Red Quilt House from Medina and Country Charm Fabrics from Jeromesville will have fabric and other quilting materials for sale. The show will include door prizes and a raffle off for a Baby Lock sewing machine, donated by Pins and Needles of Middleburg Heights. Raffle tickets are $2 apiece or three for $5.
Raffle tickets will also be on sale for a beautiful red and white guild-made quilt that will be raffled off in November. Proceeds will go to the Ashland Senior Citizens Center for a new projector. Originally associated with Independence Day events, the show was moved back a week to give more time to enjoy all festivities, Puster said. Car Show, Kids Fest Gearing up for July 8

lassic cars, games and a chalk art contest are the order of the day on Saturday, July 8, as two annual events kick off in and around Downtown Ashland the weekend after July 4. The Dream Cruise & Car Show is revving up for its seventh year, and the sixth annual Kids Fest is also on hand for family fun. Antique cars, trucks and motorcycles will line the downtown streets, and awards will be given at 3:30 p.m. Registration runs from 10 a.m. to noon. “It’s one of my favorite events, because people always say, even if they’re not car people, they come down, because it reminds them of what Ashland used to be like,” said Sandra Tunnell, director of Ashland Main Street.“You can’t get down the sidewalk because there are so many people.” The event draws thousands of visitors, who come out not just for the hundreds of vehicles, but also the food, raffles, music — including KC Big Band and a DJ — and a cornhole tournament. “It shuts down all of downtown,” Tunnell said.“It’s probably SUBMITTED PHOTO: Associated Charities gives out hot dogs in exchange for any size the biggest thing to happen in downtown.” donation during the sixth annual Kids Fest in 2016. 1970 Plymouth Barracuda
A car enthusiast for his lifetime, Jeff Imhoff and wife Vicki, of Polk, are once again bringing their 1970 Plymouth Barracuda to the Loudonville Car Show. Imhoff, who also owns and shows a 1974 AMC Javelin, which he has owned since he was in high school, acquired his Barracuda in 2002, and has brought it to Loudonville for the car show every year since buying it. “I show it a lot, and a dream, when I get the time, is to take it on the Hot Rod national power tour,” Imhoff said. “I take it on a lot of cruises, and to shows in Columbus, Norwalk and other places. Loudonville is one of my favorite car shows, and I have yet to take this car out of state.” Imhoff bought his Barracuda as a small block vehicle, but modified it to accept a 444 power train with six pack, 4-speed transmission, and Dana rear end. “In other words, this car is loaded,” he understated. While he doesn’t drive it every day, Imhoff says he drives his classic car a lot, “to shows most weekends during the show season.”

Growing up, Brian Hardin drove a Dodge Dart Swinger, a 1975 model with a slant six engine. “I always wanted a Dart with a V-8, but my dad wouldn’t let me get one,” Hardin, a Perrysville native who now lives in Ashland, said. “I favored the look of the 1971 and ’72 Darts, and a few months ago I started casually searching the Internet for one. My 50th birthday came this winter, and my wife Shelly encouraged me to go for getting my dream car as a birthday present. It turned out, I found one on her birthday.” Hardin, while working in Charlotte as a sales representative for PV Communications in Loudonville, found just the car he was looking for, a fully restored 72 Dart Swinger with a V-8 engine, at a dealership called Southern Motors in Clarkston, Michigan. “I was especially attracted to the power package, a 318 engine with automatic transmission and 4-barrel carb, and the unique color combination of gun metal gray exterior and Lapis Blue interior,” he said. “I love it,” Hardin said. “The Loudonville Car Show will be the first time I will show it, and I can’t wait.”

1966 Mustang Spirit
Saundra Baxter graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1966, the same year Ford came out with a new sporty model car, the Ford Mustang. “I fell in love with that car as soon as I saw one,” Baxter, who now lives in Hayesville, said. “I always wanted one, but at the time couldn’t afford it, but only could dream about it,” Time passed, and last year Baxter began a concerted effort to acquire a ’66 Mustang. “I did an Internet search for one, and lo and behold, found one available just up the road, at Whitmore Motors in Ashland,” she said. “I had my brother look at it, took it to my mechanic for a check over, and they both agreed it was a good buy, so I bought it.” She bought the car in April 2016, and first showed it at last summer’s Loudonville car show. In the time since she has shown it in other area car shows, including Ashland, Jeromesville, Bellville and Lucas. “I was never into to showing off cars, but I just love this one,” she said. “It is a dream finally realized.”

2003 Thunderbird
Folks in Loudonville are familiar with Sharon Gosche’s powder blue 2003 Thunderbird convertible, as she drives it almost every day except during the winter months. She bought the convertible as a memory of her father, acquiring it at Cal Hans Ford in Loudonville and getting an exact replica model of the classic as well. It includes a hard top, and soft top, and she also drives it often with no top. “I just use the hard top in April, and the later fall months,” she said. “We put it in storage during the winter to keep it in great shape.” This marks the fifth Car Show she will display her Thunderbird. She has participation plaques from the 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2016 Car Shows.

1968 Olds 442
At the time, the 1968 Olds 442 like the one Gene Guercia, a retired Cuyahoga County deputy sheriff from Brookpark, is bringing to the Loudonville Car Show “was the fastest production car on the road.” Which prompted him to buy one when it became available in 1982. “When I bought mine, it was a mess,” Guercia said. “A buddy of my son bought it from a lady, and in a short time he crashed it into a fence, and later drove in to a building. I completely restored it, and in the time since, have replaced the frame on it twice. Everything on the car from the floorboards down has been replaced since 2010-2011.” But he is very proud if it. “I show it every chance I get, including just about every Loudonville Car Show. This year I took it to the Olds Hurricane show in Lansing, Michigan, last month, and after Loudonville, I’ll take it to the Olds Nationals in Albuquerque, New Mexio in July, the Hot August Nights show in Reno, Nevada in August, and the Tunica, Mississippi, Delta River Cruise in September. I look forward to the Lions Chicken Barbecue at the Loudonville show. We buy chicken there every year.”

Some folks keep their show cars in the garage, except when they take them out for shows. Not Huey Davis of Elyria and his 1969 Camaro Super Sport. Davis has owned his classic since 1990, and while it has been repainted, he said the car has all original metal on the body. “There is not a bit of rust on it, which is remarkable because most of the time it is parked outside,” Davis said. “And I drive it a lot.The car has a total of 128,000 miles, including 28,000 since I installed a new Corvette engine two years ago. “I drive it everywhere,” he continued. “I have gone on 12 Hot Rod Tours on it, including one 2,700 miles away, in San Bernadino, California; another show in Reno (Nevada), which isn’t much closer; six years in a row to the Cruise in Coast in Biloxi, Mississppi; four times to the Emerald Coast show in Panama City, Florida; and to 10 consecutive Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, shows.” Another remarkable thing about Davis’ Camaro is that he gets about 30 miles to the gallon. “That is really something,” he said. Davis has brought his Camaro to the Loudonville Car Show “five or six times,” he said. “I love it. I usually come down with five or six friends who bring their cars. We have a great time.”

1956 Ford Thunderbird

Eldon Burnell of Mansfield owned a 1956 Ford Thunderbird, the year after the originals were built, for many years. But the novelty seemed to have worn off, so, several years ago, he sold it. “I found I missed it,” he said. So two years ago, he started looking for a similar car, finding one in Northern Ohio. “It looked pretty well restored body wise, but I learned it had not been driven for 10 years,” Burnell said. “Because of that, we found it plagued by seal leaks, and ended up spending three months fixing all of the leaks. Now it is restored to factory condition.” The Loudonville Car Show will be the first show Burnell will take his classic vehicle to.
Steve Brown of Newark will bring an unusual vehicle to the Loudonville Car Show, a 1962 Dodge Dart. “When they made the Dart, and similar vehicles in the early 1960s, I think the engineers at Chrysler were a little crazy, because the car was ugly,” Brown said. “Several Chrysler dealerships closed across the country because people just were not buying them. But then the Dart reasserted itself. When equipped with a big engine, like the 340 cubic inch small block I installed on my car, they experienced great success in the drag racing circuit.” Admittedly a Mopar fan, Brown said he bought his Dart 18 years ago, and worked on it for seven years, mostly after he retired in 2001. “In one last push, I worked on it steadily from the fall until July, and then triumphantly took it to the Good Guys Car Show in Columbus,” he said. He has brought his Dart to the Loudonville Car Show several times, and commented “with the exception of the much larger Good Guys show in Columbus, I think the Loudonville Car Show is the best in Ohio. It features a great mix of cars, quality cars. I really enjoy it.”
