ADVANCING
PHILANTHROPY
2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT
Greetings to our Friends and Neighbors in Ashland County! On June 30, 2019, the Ashland County Community Foundation wrapped-up an amazing 24th year of operation, enthusiastically embracing its mission of “advancing philanthropy” in Ashland County. With awe-inspiring support from our generous donor base of nearly 7,000 individuals who have made a gift at some level to the Foundation, we continue to make great strides in impacting our community in a positive way! This past year, 36 new endowment funds were established, second only to the prior fiscal year’s total of 43. In the past seven years, a remarkable 223 funds have been created, as we march forward, using your gifts to strengthen our community. James M. Cutright Executive Director/CEO
Those of us who have served as trustees, volunteers or staff are amazed at the rate of growth that ACCF has experienced. Few of us could have envisioned, at this point in our history, having 469 endowment funds under administration, with over $55 million in invested assets and the awarding of over $15.3 million in scholarships, grants and distributions of earnings from our investments. While we enjoy a diverse mix of the type of endowment funds being initiated, i.e. scholarship funds, agency funds, donor-designated funds, field-of-interest funds… the flexibility that is represented by “donor-advised” funds has caused them to become a very popular fund of choice this year. With a donor-advised fund, a benefactor may enjoy the opportunity to give on one schedule, while distributing on another, even allowing for second-generation family philanthropy to be maximized.
Kenneth E. Milligan Board Chair
To Date Dollars Given Back: $15,374,542 Funds: 469 Donors: 6,989 Assets: $57,148,448
An emphasis was placed on further developing private-public partnerships this year, as ACCF leveraged its assets with other community players to move the needle in areas of community improvement and economic development, with significant results. Our staff at the Foundation continues to lend its leadership expertise to other organizations in Ashland County, by serving on various boards and ad hoc committees, which only serves to demonstrate our capabilities and build confidence in those donors and agencies that we serve. On behalf of the staff and board of trustees at the Ashland County Community Foundation, we express our deep gratitude for your support and confidence in our mission. If you are already a member of the ACCF Family, we thank you; if not, please consider joining us, as we continue “Advancing Philanthropy” in Ashland County.
Regards, James M. Cutright Executive Director/CEO

Foundation
Like all community foundations, the Ashland County Community Foundation: • Has an independent, all-volunteer governing body
broadly representative of its community. • Informs and educates individuals, families and businesses
about community issues and grant making opportunities. • Actively involves individuals, families and businesses in
The Ashland County Community Foundation is among more than 850 community foundations in the United States. Community foundations are tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) public charities that serve local donors who wish to take an organized approach to giving. Because community foundations are public charities, their donors enjoy increased tax advantages not available to private foundation donors. Community foundation donors also receive professional support without hiring staff. Unlike private foundations, community foundations invest and administer a pool of funds contributed by numerous donors. Together, these donors create an endowment - in essence the community’s charitable savings account - designed to ensure the long-term health of the nonprofit community. Ohio is home to more than 90 community foundations, including several recognized nationwide as innovators in the field. Individually and collectively they provide Ohio with a wealth of energy, ideas, leadership, and social and philanthropic capital. These resources help find new and effective solutions to the challenges facing our communities. Community foundations, in essence, represent trust and confidence in the community and a commitment to our future.

Ashland County Community Foundation • 2018-2019 Annual Report
Agency Partners Nonprofit organizations can establish a type of designated, permanently-endowed fund at the Ashland County Community Foundation called an “Agency Fund.” The earning distributions from these endowments provide an ongoing source of income for operations and programs. It’s a simple and efficient way to build an endowment... and help create sustainability... for the organization. This type of endowment also provides the opportunity for the organization to receive planned gifts of various types, including cash, appreciated stock or real estate. This past year, four new agency funds were established, to benefit three organizations: 1.) Ashland Family YMCA, 2.) Ashland Symphony Orchestra and 3.) Zion Lutheran Church of Loudonville. Ashland Family YMCA leadership demonstrated amazing discipline in the creation of a new permanent endowment fund to provide youth scholarships, after receiving a significant gift from the estate of Mr. Ted Jacobs, a long-time Ashland resident and avid YMCA supporter. The “Y” always has ongoing needs, including deferred building maintenance, that need addressed, but the governing body of this fine organization recognized the value of moving this asset to ACCF for permanent stewardship, allowing future needs to be met over the long-term. Ashland Symphony Orchestra demonstrated the wisdom of planning for the future, by establishing a new endowment fund at ACCF to provide sustainability for music education in our community, as the result of a gift from Mr. Harold Weller, as well as creating a second agency fund designed to endow the podium, in honor of long-time musical conductor and director, Maestro Arie Lipsky. Zion Lutheran Church of Loudonville serves the spiritual needs of parishioners in Ashland’s beloved “South County.” This year, their leadership council elected to place its confidence in the stewardship capabilities of ACCF, by moving its endowment to the Foundation. Income from the newly-created Zion Lutheran Church of Loudonville Endowment Fund will provide financial support of its mission into perpetuity. ACCF very much appreciates the confidence these organizations have demonstrated in our ability to provide long-term stewardship of these important assets.
