Higher Education ASHLAND UNIVERSITY Ashland University (www. ashland.edu) is a mid-sized, private, comprehensive university located a short distance from Akron, Cleveland and Columbus. Ashland University values the individual student and offers a unique educational experience that combines the challenge of strong, applied academic programs with a faculty and staff who build nurturing relationships with their students. Situated on a 135-acre campus with trees, brick walkways and flower gardens, Ashland University affords close proximity to the big city while offering the advantages of an intimate campus experience in a small-town setting. Deeply rooted in tradition, yet always moving forward, the university seeks to provide opportunities for students to learn, grow and find their place in the world. The university is home to 2,400 full-time, undergraduate students and approximately 3,100 graduate students and students who attend off-campus centers. Ninety-two percent of undergraduate students are from Ohio, while students also come from 27 other states and 31 countries. The average ACT score for the 2010 freshman class was 22.9, while the average high school grade point average for that class was 3.37. Health Department The Ashland County-City Health Department (ACCHD) is operated by the Ashland County Board of Health and the Ashland City Board of Health. It serves the 55,125 residents of Ashland County, as well as those who live here just during the summer months, the school year and those who are touring Ashland County. The ACCHD serves everyone regardless of income.

Summer Festivals ASHLAND BALLOONFEST Ashland BalloonFest is an annual free-to-the-public festival started to celebrate the historical presence of the balloon and rubber industries in Ashland and their importance to the local economy. Now, the festival brings the community together in the summer to delight in hot air ballooning and neighborly fellowship. The festival is spearheaded by Ashland BalloonFest Committee, a nonprofit organization, and is paid for through sponsorships from the community. Community Foundation Ashland County Community Foundation paid a total of $94,740 in 2011 to 116 scholarship recipients from the Career Center and Hillsdale, Loudonville, Mapleton and Ashland high schools. Further, the Foundation approved 43 community, teacher and women’s fund grants in 2010-11 for a total of $163,111. Since inception, more than $4.5 million has been provided to the Ashland County community via 250 donor established funds. More than 5,000 donors have made current and deferred gifts totaling $17 million. Funds entrusted to the Foundation are invested

to provide a stream of income and to provide for the long-term growth of principal and income without undue exposure to risk, while serving three distinct constituencies: Individual donors, non-profit organizations and the community-at-large. ACCF Board and staff members participate in many community initiatives and planning strategies as well as providing the service of fiscal agent as appropriate.
