Paddle in Peace

on the Mohican River

here’s nothing like a quiet paddle on the Mohican River. Here in the canoeing capital of Ohio that might not seem likely, but there are plenty of isolated stretches along the Mohican and its forks where you can paddle in peace. Opportunities abound for those who own a canoe or kayak — with trips ranging from a few hours to a whole day. Here are a few suggestions for adventurous souls who seek a river less traveled. The mainstream of the Mohican River continues about 25 miles beyond Frye’s landing on Wally Road, which is where many of the livery trips end. Add to that more than five miles of the Walhonding River, which starts at the confluence of the Mohican and Kokosing rivers. With the exception of a few campgrounds and the village of Brinkhaven, the river corridor remains relatively uncivilized. Greer landing between Loudonville and Danville is an excellent spot to start a trip. It’s located off Ohio 514 on the east bank of the Mohican River. From there, it’s a short but scenic paddle to Brinkhaven. Be advised that there is a lowhead dam upstream of U.S. 62. A section of the right side of the dam was removed years ago and some submerged debris remains, so proceed with caution. The best access spot is just past the Bridge of Dreams on the east bank. 1

Beyond Brinkhaven, river access is available at Cavallo, the confluence with the Kokosing River, and Mohawk Dam. It’s about five miles from Brinkhaven to Cavallo, seven miles from Cavallo to the confluence and five miles or so from the confluence to Mohawk Dam. (To calculate time, figure about 3 mph paddling speed.) Access at Cavallo is on the west bank before the bridge off Flat Run Road. At the confluence, access is available on both banks of the Kokosing River. However, a short upstream paddle is required to land on the north bank, which is accessible on Township Road 423 south of Ohio 715. At Mohawk Dam, the access road gate is sometimes locked. Contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for information at (740) 824-4343. Otherwise, it’s about a quarter-mile carry to the gate or a steep climb to the roadway at the top of the dam. A lot of paddlers prefer to take out at one of four Ohio 715 bridges that cross the river between the confluence and the dam. Jerome Fork of the Mohican offers opportunities for short trips under ideal conditions. It should be noted that some sections are shallow best paddled at somewhat higher water levels. Jerome Fork is narrow with steep banks and can be dangerous at peak water levels, i.e. following a heavy rain.

The Ashland County Park District has provided access at River Walk Natural Area on County Road 1500 and 6.5 miles downstream at Hopkins Landing on County Road 175 south of U.S. 30. For those who want to press on further, there is another access just past the confluence of Muddy and Jerome forks, which meet to form Lake Fork. This is located on Ohio 95 on the west bank of the river. There also are remote stretches on the Mohican River’s other main tributaries: Black Fork, Clear Fork, and Lake Fork. Some require bushwhacking skills, but make for a rewarding experience.

Cuyahoga National Park

A True Ohio Gem ❱❱ Blue Hen Falls in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is reached by a less traveled path and possesses “a different kind of charm” from the more famous Brandywine Falls.

ne of the many scenic and recreational gems within the state of Ohio is the 33,000acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Although Ohio is home to a number of national historic sites and landmarks, national wildlife refuges and multiple state parks, CVNP is Ohio’s only national park. Based on its size and wealth of opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing and general sightseeing, it’s hard to get a handle on where to start exploring it. Maggie Olson, marketing manager at Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a Friends’ group for the park, made some suggestions for getting to know all that it has to offer. The most popular feature, Olson said, is the Towpath Trail, about a 100-mile trail cutting “right through the middle of the national park” and reaching from Cleveland to New Philadelphia. Olson described the trail as “the spine” of the park — flat and easily traversed. Another highlight is Beaver Marsh, she said, with beavers and river otters observable in any season, “usually at dawn or dusk.” It can be reached from the Ira trailhead, north on the Towpath Trail, “not even a half mile (away),” Olson said, and it is wheelchair and stroller accessible, “assuming it’s not muddy.” Among the many waterfalls adorning the CVNP landscape, Brandywine Falls are the most famous. “It’s gorgeous; we love it,” said Olson, noting a boardwalk connects the trail and the viewing platform. The steps to the platform lead to a stunning overlook positioned at the cascading falls — a spectacular vista. Patrons not able to walk down to the platform may easily enjoy the sight of the 65-foot falls from the boardwalk. Brandywine Falls is “very accessible, which is nice,” she said. Not quite as famous, but possessing a “different kind of charm” are Blue Hen Falls. While not as easily acces-

Secrest Arboretum By LINDA HALL Staff Writer

hio’s arboretums and gardens offer entertainment beyond their aesthetic value and can be fun for the entire family. Many of them devote special areas to capturing the attention of children. Secrest Arboretum on the campus of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster is multi-faceted, encompassing themed gardens, revolving around, for example, roses, butterflies and water; paved walkways, and decorative seating in wooded, meadow and floral settings. Designed especially for children is a natural play area described as featuring a “fortress ... embankment slide and pavilion complete with giant frogs (and) tortoises.” Another unique feature at Secrest is the William J. Lemmon Health and Wellness Garden, promoting the connection between plants and human wellness. The garden highlights six facets of wellness — environmental, spiritual, intellectual, physical, social and emotional, accompanied by informational signage giving walkers “did you know?” facts on each of the topics and “what you can do” suggestions to improve health and wellness. The Health and Wellness Garden is part of a redesigned Secrest Arboretum and environs, with a new welcome center part of plans for the future. Classes and programs are available through Secrest, but in and of itself it is an education. “If you’re expanding or redoing your landscaping,” said Wayne County Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Martha Starkey, she suggested checking out options at Secrest Arboretum. “Out there, you can see (how certain 9

plants) will grow,” Starkey said. “Everything is labeled.” Among the many facets of Secrest Arboretum, she said, “there is something for everybody.” Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens on Portage Path in Akron opens for the season in April, and with it the Playgarden, aptly named because it invites children to activate a bubble machine; climb in and out of a miniature Tudor mansion which features a spiral slide, an amazing marble chase, a footbridge and a rock climbing wall; “drive” a Model A Ford truck; and try their hand at lawn bowling. Each interactive station of the Playgarden is tied to a feature of the Manor House, which is open for tours. A variety of other specialty gardens, including an English garden, covers the remainder of the

acreage around the historic home. The Dawes Arboretum in Newark offers a wide variety of trails, in number and scope, varying from gravel and asphalt to mulch and grass. They easily navigable paths wind their way through more than 1,000 acres of gardens, wetlands, woods, meadows, lake and ponds, which create a variety of habitats, each with its own showcase of flowers, shrubs and trees. A historic Japanese garden has been recently redone. Dawes’ child-centered story book trail weaves together classic children’s literature with nature. Special programs and classes for all ages are scheduled throughout the season. Likewise, Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Columbus plans exhibitions throughout the year, such as a spring color showcase highlighted by 100,000 tulips, narcissus, crocus, hyacinths and other seasonal flowers; a Blooms and Butterflies program scheduled from March through September; and a winter holiday celebration of horticulture displays, evening lighting, a gingerbread competition, and a garden-centered, model railroad. These are just a few of the arboretums and gardens located across Ohio and providing a unique playground and aesthetic respite for all ages of visitors.

The Greater Alliance Carnation Festival

Celebrate Its 57th Year T

he Greater Alliance Carnation Festival will celebrate its 57th year from August 5-21. The Festival brings the community together to celebrate the flower that gave Alliance its name. There are many events that involve the community's citizens, businesses and dignitaries, bringing the city together to celebrate all that is great about the Carnation City. The Carnation Festival, which inagurated in 1960, is a favorite among locals. Area businesses sponsor the events and keep the festival running each year. The Festival begins with the Rib Burnoff and Kickoff Parade and finishes with the Grand Parade and a spectacular display of fireworks at Silver Park. The park is the central location for many of the festival's events, including Days in the Park, a three-day event that features booth by local organizations, crafters and food vendors. A balloon lift-off, which brings dozens of hot air ballooners to town, departs from Silver Park as part of a one-day event called Flite Test, which also includes drone displays. Several local bands and musical groups energize the bandstand and the Alliance Symphony Orchestra performs in the evenings. The Rib Fest gathers many vendors from far and wide who countless culinary varieties while more popular musical acts perform outside the Carnation City Mall. Young women vie for the title of Carnation Queen, an honor that grants them the honor of representing the Carnation City. 17

There are opportunities to participate in contests during the Festival, including an amateur photography contest, a flower show, youth sports events and a vintage â&#x20AC;&#x153;base ballâ&#x20AC;? tournament. Area fire departments compete in a pump-in and muster. Visits to some of Alliance's unique landmarks, like Glamorgan Castle, the Haines House and Mabel Hartzell Museum. Yearly activities are planned by the Festival Board, which consists of community members serving as heads of the many event committees. The Pumpkin is King In Barnesville By BRUCE YARNALL Staff Writer

hat began in the basement of the Assumption Catholic Church in 1964 has grown to attract 100,000 visitors to the small village of Barnesville each year during the last full weekend in September. It is hard to believe that over a half century has passed since Vernon Burkhart, Martin Schumacher, and the other committee members planned and staged the first Barnesville Fall Fair. That year over 3,000 viewed the produce at the Assumption Church basement including Tom Rockwell’s 77-pound pumpkin, an entry that would set the stage for today’s huge production. At that first affair, Barnesville High Vo-Ag students served as judges as they do to this day establishing early wide-spread community involvement in the festival. Skeptics who doubted the fair would succeed did not know Barnesville history. Located some distance from our county seat, local citizens staged the first of 23 Barnesville Agricultural Fairs in 1870 at today’s Memorial Park. When that faltered, the event was transformed into the Fall Races, a horse racing event that proved popular up through the 1920s. The following decade, the community marked downtown “Homecomings” complete with history displays and special events capped by a huge street parade. In 1953 and 1958, Barnesville staged elaborate Ohio

and Barnesville sesquicentennial celebrations. And for the past 52 years, citizens of this community and neighboring towns have donated hundreds of thousands of hours to make the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival the event we experience and cherish today. Early financial support for the “free street fair” came from “Barnesville business houses and organizations,” with over 85 listed its first year downtown. The village government is also credited for its magnificent support and assistance literally since the festival’s inception. The second edition of the festival in 1965 included a “Cavalcade of Old Cars” parked along Main Street and special downtown merchant sales. Outgrowing the church basement, the festival moved to West Main Street in 1967 providing the opportunity for more events and displays. The crowd that first year downtown was estimated at 8,000. The following year, Becky Carpenter was crowned the first festival queen the same year the Mother’s Club added the “Little Miss and Mr. Pumpkin” contest. From these humble beginnings, the festival celebration grew exponentially. An antique show – store window displays (1968) and carnival rides on Broadway and W. Main (1969) preceded a name change to

Ohio Pumpkin Festival in 1970. That year also saw the first street parade and the introduction of pumpkin ice cream manufactured locally by Damsel’s. Some products and events have come and gone, most notably a short-lived run for pumpkin burgers while the Garden Club’s Flower Show, Jaycee’s Haunted House, Garden Tractor Pull, and 4-H Show are no more. When founder Vernon Burkhart retired and relocated to Florida, downtown merchant Eugene “Doc” Householder stepped up in 1974 serving as president for the next 27 years. A healthy run of the Cavalcade of Bands also launched that year. Other expansions included a Banjo and Fiddle Contest, the Big Pumpkin Auction (1976), Pumpkin Run (1977), and Pet Show (1980) among others. By the ‘80s when the Wednesday night weighing of the giant pumpkins gained popularity, Saturday parade day crowds were estimated at 50,000. Still growing in popularity, the festival expanded to the B & O

Depot and Watt Center areas the following decade. During its history, the festival has drawn its fair share of celebrities and brought national attention to Barnesville. Miss America 1971, Ohio’s Laurie Lee Schafer was a special guest in 1974. The Ohio State University Football Coach Woody Hays cut the ribbon in 1980 as did Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Harry Goldstein four years later. Also in the ‘80s, the late Ed Johnson, host of the popular Agri-Country television show, broadcast from Barnesville and served as weigh master. The 150-member Ohio University Bobcat Marching Band livened up the 1974 parade.

The Pumpkin is King In Barnesville

he festival was featured on the NBC Today Show and honored as one of the 100 top Festivals and Fairs by the American Bus Association. Observers from the Ohio Festival and Events Association visited in 1984 to determine if the Pumpkin Festival merited membership in the statewide organization. It did, but the organization wanted “Ohio” dropped from the name in deference to another older festival that also celebrated the harvest of “the orange orb” each fall. After years of dancing around the issue, local leadership acquiesced resulting in a second name change to Barnesville Pumpkin Festival in 2002. Throughout its 50 years, the Barnesville Enterprise has been a major booster of the festival featuring annual “Pumpkin Festival Build-up” articles in the months leading up to the festival and recording the history of the event each year. Since its introduction in 1977, the Enterprise has served as publisher of the color Pumpkin Festival Tabloid which was included in last week’s paper and handed out from the Pumpkin Information Booth to the thousands each year. We would also be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the contributions of the dedicated pumpkin festival committee members who are now with us in “spirit only” including but not limited to Vernon Burkhart, William “Buck” Froehlich, Charles “Buck” Johnson, Ollie Jones, Averil Lynn, Don Noland, Pat Roby, Ralph Roth, Art Seneff, Tom Skinner, Isabel Wheaton, Carol Wheeler, and Bob Wineman.

The Pumpkin Festival began during Governor James A. Rhodes’ first administration. Rhodes, no stranger to Barnesville thanks to late Enterprise publisher Ray Palmer, was a strong advocate of local tourism. In fact, the second Fall Fair first featured the “Wonderful World of Ohio” state-sponsored traveling exhibit. During that era, other eastern Ohio communities also launched festivals that have all come and gone, but the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival remains one of the premier events in our region

drawing visitors from three states and beyond. It is a testament to the originators of this event and the legions of community volunteers who have carried the “torch” forward. The hearts of local citizens, Barnesville natives and former residents swell with pride each September as they gather in the center of Barnesville to once again celebrate. Great Lakes Science Center

Offers Hands-On Fun for the Family W

hether you want to learn about chemistry, biology, math, engineering or other sciences, chances are the Great Lakes Science Center has a program for you. “The Great Lakes Science Center offers a range of exhibits focused on [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math],” said Dr. Kirsten Ellenbogen, president and CEO, Great Lakes Science Center. “Our goal at the museum is to make STEM come alive. One of the first things you realize when you come in is there is a lot of programming.” The current exhibit at the science center is “The Science of Ripley's Believe It or Not,” which closes April 24. The exhibit focuses on the "how" and "why" of the planet's more curious phenomenon, and it does it through the collection and inspiration of Robert Ripley, who made a career out of traveling the world and gathering information on the bizarre. "He was one of the original kings of all media," said Joe Yachanin of the Great Lakes Science Center. "His franchise is a household name."

Following the Ripley's display, the science center will open Sports Arena, which can be seen May 28 through Sept. 5, Ellenbogen said. “Sports Arena gets into the science and physics of sports,” she said. “Visitors can try out the science behind the sports. They can test their strength and stamina. It will be very interactive.”

The exhibit coincides with the Summer Olympics, Ellenbogen said. The sceince center will host programs and activities connected to the Rio Olympics and pay homage to past Olympic athletes from Ohio. In the fall, the Great Lakes Science Center will open Design Zone, which will “explore the math of art, music and engineering,” Ellenbogen said. This exhibit is scheduled to open Oct. 1.

Under the sea, through a tornado and in the jungles are just a few of the places the OMNIMAX theater has taken guests since it opened in 1996. The OMNIMAX screen is 79 feet in diameter and six stories high, Ellenbogen said. “The film takes up the entire screen,” she said. “You sit in those chairs and you feel you are on the scene.”

This seasonal exhibit, open May through October, is a part of the Great lakes Science Center as well, Ellenbogen said. The 618-foot steamship, built in 1925 and used to transport iron pellets, coal and other materials through the Great Lakes, is now a museum. Guests can learn what life onboard a Great Lakes freighter was like, as well as learn more about Great Lakes history. “It has a long history connected to Cleveland,” Ellenbogen said of the Mather. “It is a terrific example of the early innovations of Great Lakes technology in steamships. We talk about the Mather as the boat that built Cleveland.

The theater, which features a six story high domed screen, screens a wide range of films from educational documentaries to feature films such as the Harry Potter movies and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Mather also made history during World War II when it lead a convoy of 13 freighters in early 1941 through the upper Great Lakes to Duluth, Minn, Ellenbogen said. The journey, which delivered materials needed by the Allies, set a record for early arrival for a northern port, she added. Space Center

his year marks the 75th anniversary of the NASA Glenn Research Center. Visitors to the science center can catch a glimpse of NASA history and artifacts in the NASA Glenn Visitor Center. The visitor center had been located at the research center in Cleveland, said Ellenbogen. However, due to security concerns, the center was moved to the science center. Three years ago, the science center was reopened after a major renovation, she said. “We wanted it to be more accessible to more people,” Ellenbogen said. “Having it at the science center makes it so that visitors can connect with NASA.”

In addition, museum guests can experiment with air resistance and test a pressurized bottle rocket; learn how to power a space station and plan a space mission, watch a video tour of NASA Glenn's labs and test chambers, and more. The newest feature in the visitor's center is a section dedicated to biomedical technology and engineering, said Yachanin.

Guests can check out interactive exhibits, videos and educational displays focusing on genomics, stem cells, prosthetics, functional electrical stimulation (FES) and medical imaging. There's even a display dedicated to nanotechnology, Yachanin said.
