Ohio's Bucket List TOP CHOICES TO SEE AND DO

By Craig Webb | GateHouse Ohio

• NW

Sail a great lake Nothing says summer like the spray of walleyesmelling fresh water on your face as you glide across the bathtub known as Lake Erie. Climb aboard a ferry that hauls tourists and partiers to the Lake Erie islands. Sure there’s plenty of places to drink and eat and drink on the islands but there’s also some history to explore too. Tucked in a corner of Kelleys Island are the Glacial Grooves. You can stand and marv el at the deep grooves cut into the limestone bedrock by glaciers some 18,000 years ago then relive the moment at an island drinking hole and ponder life before craft beer. (kellysislandchamber.com)

Take a chance Ohio is home to the holy grail of amusement parks. Crazy Brits climb aboard planes every summer to explore Ohio’s Roller Coast so what’s your excuse to not make the trek to Sandusky. There are 18 coasters to choose from but one stands above the rest at 420 feet. Ride the Top Thrill Dragster over and over – stomach willing – to achieve the ultimate Bucket List checkmark. The coaster occasionally fails to make it over the top and nothing is more scary and faith challenging than going 120 mph in 3.8 seconds only to plummet backwards back to the station. (cedarpoint.com)

CT• BUTTER UP Our state fair is a great state fair – no really it is. If you have never been to the Ohio State Fair (July 24 to Aug. 4) what’s stopping you? The fair has everything you want in a good fair from stinky farm animals to fried anything to giant butter sculptures. You heard me right… giant butter sculptures. The tradition dates back to the early 1900s and every year butter sculpting artists make new creations and a life-size cow and calf that pair nicely with some Bob Evans rolls. (ohiostatefair.com)

WAX ON Ohio is home to what is believed to be one of the largest religious wax museums in the country populated by stars of Hollywood’s bygone era. There are more than 300 wax figures and some 70 scenes inside of the Biblewalk in Mansfield. The attraction opened in the 1980s when its creator purchased some celebrity figures from a defunct wax museum. If you look closely you might spot Clark Gable or Elizabeth Taylor or Burt Lancaster in the Bible scenes. (biblewalk.us)

TAKE A SIP There are some 70 wineries and vineyards and six different wine trails in Ohio. I’m a fruity vintage yesterday kind of wine connoisseur so I’m not the guy to ask where to go. Just follow your nose and sample as many as you can with a designated driver in tow. You could check Ohio’s version of the Jersey Shore – Geneva-on-the-Lake – that is home to miniature golf courses and the Old Firehouse Winery. Watch the sunset over the lake and take a wine-induced nap on the winery’s Ferris Wheel. (oldfirehousewinery.com)

A bunch of trolls Trolls of every shape and size – and I’m not talking about the Internet variety – call this Alliance museum home. It seems trolls multiply faster than rabbits and this collection fills every nook and cranny inside of the downtown Troll Hole Museum. The collection is the biggest in the world according to the fine folks at Guinness World Records. Be warned, trolls as you will learn have a checkered past and have been known to eat small children. (thetrollhole.com)

Pass the sausage There are plenty of cool and quirky places to eat in Ohio but only one can thank a cross-dresser from a 1970s TV show for much of its fame. Tony Packo’s in Toledo was a favorite of Cpl. Maxwell Klinger on M*A*S*H and is perhaps the only place on Earth where visiting celebrities sign hot dog buns. Be sure to try the pickles, you will enjoy them over and over long after you leave the restaurant. (tonypacko.com)

• NE

Signs of the time There are plenty of halls of fame in Ohio celebrating everything from polka to football. A museum in Cincinnati is dedicated to advertising signs. The American Sign Museum is home to 200 colorful signs including a fiberglass Frisch’s Big Boy statue with a slingshot in his back pocket. There’s even a vintage single arch McDonald’s sign with the original spokescharacter Speedee who lost his corporate gig in the 1960s to some clown named Ronald McDonald. (americansignmuseum.com)

Religious experience Rising from the farm fields in Ashtabula County is the world’s largest statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Whether you a Catholic or not, the 50-foot artwork marking the visions of Mary in Mexico is both serene and surreal. The Windsor Township farm turned religious retreat center is also home to one of the world’s largest rosaries. (servantsofmary.org)

Cedar Point is a perennially popular summertime destination, and this year it introduces a themed experiential attraction: the Forbidden Frontier on Adventure Island. There are also museums for the education-minded, minor league baseball games for the sports enthusiasts and a few fairs and festivals that make a trip to Pemberville or Put-in-Bay well worth it.
