The power of the sea can be reassuring, a memory to recall when we feel weak and alone during the storms of life. “All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full.” (Ecclesiastes 1:7) How deep and how endless is God’s love for us! He can help us through the worst catastrophe when we believe in his omnipotence. As we are drawn to the sea, may we be drawn to our house of worship so that the power of His might and His Word will remain fresh in our hearts and minds.

July 13th & 14th Fun Entertainment for the Whole Family

Our star-spangled holiday It’s hard to be patriotic these days. Our own government seems to divide us on more issues to list, and there’s a constant urging to remind us that we are more of an international planet than we thought. So while on one hand we cherish our patriotic pride, on the other hand we relish the entire world and dine more on foreign cuisines than our own. (Not that anyone could survive solely on hotdogs and apple pie, although we seem to give it our best shot come summer.) My family comes from Poland. My great-grandparents came to America and settled either in Cleveland to work in the factories or in Pennsylvania to work in the coal mines. To this day, I still celebrate certain Polish holidays and treasure our traditions. But for all of the pierogi and oplatek, I never forget that I am more American than anything else. And there is no better time of the year to remind me than the Fourth of July, a holiday

that rings as loud in my heart as the fireworks do in my ears. I will never claim to be a political wizard or even attempt to understand the government that controls our nation, but I would be remiss if I didn’t appreciate just a little the freedoms that we have on my favorite holiday. If you have ever had the opportunity to meet and converse with people from other countries, you might be as surprised as I that the things we do and consider to be so normal are simple demonstrations of the freedom that we have and that we continue to fight for. Consider the average Fourth of July holiday. It is usually kicked off by a parade, where children, adults, and often livestock, walk, drive,

They planned this race as a fundraiser for the Coshocton Lake Park Complex and all proceeds from the event will benefit Lake Park. Race participants will receive a T-shirt, number tag with IR timing chip and an information packet. Those completing the run will also receive a completion medal and, of course, bragging rights. “There are over 20 obstacles set up along the

Beating the heat

SUMMER SAVI N GS SUMMER SAVINGS Day 90Commerci al Warenty 5 YEAR

10th Anniversary Sale

It looks like it’s going to be one of those summers — miserably hot. Too hot, in fact, to go fishing. That is, unless you switch it up and start your fishing trip just before the sun goes down. Scorching sun, low-level water conditions, and bath-water temperatures are making this summer’s fishing difficult on the fish and fishermen. Luckily, there’s always catfish willing to bite. While there is a group of fishermen who prefer nighttime fishing, the majority of us take to the water during the daylight hours. This summer, though, nighttime fishing just might be the ticket. I think the general consensus is cat fishing is for those who can’t bass, walleye or crappie fish. But, it’s not as easy as you think. Like everything else, there are good cat fishermen, mediocre ones, and bad ones. I certainly don’t count myself in the good class, but do admit channel cats are fun to reel in. They’re a pain if you catch them while targeting something else, say walleye, but there’s no denying the fact that they put up a good fight, and you know when you have one on, as they stay down and refuse to give up. I don’t care to eat catfish, but plenty of people do, and tell me they’re delicious. I prefer catch and release. I had planned an evening fishing trip this past week, but my fishing partner had his work schedule change at the last minute, and try as I might, I couldn’t find anyone else to go cat fishing with me on short notice. My wife offered to cofish with me, but I knew she really didn’t want to

Ditch wear inspired favorite wardrobe accessory

I remembered a trick that I’d seen the European pros do for years when they crossed over mountain passes in the classic tours to begin their chilly, high-speed descents: they’d shove a newspaper up the front of their jersey to insulate them from the wind. For lack of a pile of newspapers to be found anywhere along the roads between Orrville and Millersburg, in desperation I opted for one of those Styrofoam take-out dinner trays I found in a roadside ditch — the kind with the three compartments and a fold-over lid. I shoved that baby up the front of my jersey and despite the fact that I looked like I was about

agitated squawk of great blue herons when I got too close to them. Up until midnight, I could see lights of shore cat fishermen, and their lighted bobbers in the water. Most, though, left the lake by midnight, and on this night, there was not another boat on the part of the lake I was on. It was just me and the nighttime. By 11 p.m., I had stopped trying to catch bass, and put a second catfish line in the water, this one baited with a nice

big juicy nightcrawler. The live bluegill weren’t working, so I used the Gulp minnow (which I often refreshed by dipping it back in the bottle), and the crawler. Unfortunately, I didn’t get another bite, so I packed up and was off the water by 1 a.m. I marked the night down as a success, certainly a change of pace from my normal fishing excursions. A solo trip that was good for my sole. A time to relax and reflect. And with a look at the rest of the summer’s forecast, I may be doing a lot more of it.

to give birth to an allyou-can-eat fish dinner, I was in heaven. It was as if I’d found a woolen sweater! I made it home in a glow of comfort and warmth and vowed to never again head out on the commute to work without a similar insurance policy. By the next morning I had fashioned the ultimate “chest protector” out of half-inch thick packing foam, carefully trimming it to pull primary duty as a cargo pad and moisture block in the ever-present string bag on my back. Giddy with the joy of having created something so perfectly functional and versatile out of mere trash, I rode with this set-up for months. During my lightning-inspired layover last week I had put the pad to perfect use staving off the throes of hypothermia as I hunkered, soaked and shivering, for over an hour. When I did finally make it home that day I’d carefully removed the foam from my pack

I think it was actually back around October when I first had my big idea. It was a classic fall morning: 50°, a bright blue sky, a light southwesterly breeze and the promise of a nice tailwind for the ride home at the end of the day. Unfortunately, as they so often do when the college semester is in full swing, the end of the school day came quite a bit later than expected and I rode out to meet a setting sun and a breeze that had shed 10° and done an ugly about-face. One would think I’ve been at this business of bicycle riding long enough to make sure I’m always prepared for anything, but the sad fact is that every year, having been lulled into complacency by fair winds and fine days, I’m forced to suffer badly through some meteorological anomaly and relearn my lessons. Halfway home and I was turning into an icicle.

loved, that we had our own unique talents and had something to offer to society, and that we were important. However, unlike today, we were also taught that there were many others in the world who were also important, and we weren’t any better than anyone else. Not so anymore. I do not believe that “it takes a village to raise a child.” It takes parents — parents who are brave, strong and responsible enough to recognize that parenting is a profession like any other and deserves the best we can give it. Our children deserve the best, but our “best” doesn’t always mean giving them everything they want or telling them what they want to hear. Instead, giving our best to our children means we love them enough to give them a realistic picture of their place in the world and what they can do to make the world a better place.

caught them more than once acting like jerks. There were occasions where they had difficulty sitting for a bit (and if that’s child abuse, I guess I shoulda been arrested), privileges were taken away, and favored toys were taken away. Guess what? They’re both still alive, don’t seem to have suffered any terrible psychoses, and have turned into independent adults who know how to treat others. But, alas, things have changed. Rose Kennedy would croak. We no longer teach our children to be respectful beings, cooperative/contributing members of society, law-abiding citizens. Instead, we coddle and cater to them; we tell them from the day they are born that “you are the most important person in the world.” Now, when I was a kid, such an attitude was called “being too big for your britches.” We were taught that we were

have been disciplined and grounded forever … and two weeks. Today if you say anything about badly behaved kids, the parents retain a lawyer to defend every illicit action their idiot offspring engage in. My friend continued her story by telling me that her son was once walking home from school, when the mother of one of his harassers grabbed him and shook him, telling him to stop “whining to your mommy” about the rocks her brats had thrown, the foul language they’d said to him, etc. Notice the mother never denied her kids had done it. So this mother, in turn, bullies a third-grader ... so is it any wonder the kids act like jerks? My kids were by no means angels, and I

today has become a doit-yourself project, and many kids are expected (or allowed) to raise themselves. Parents provide the funding for the project, and kids are left to find their own way in the world. And they often find a dangerous path filled with drugs, alcohol, teenaged births and crime. Then we wring our hands and wonder “what happened?” A friend from down South told me of a time she’d gone to pick up her third-grade age son at the bus stop after school and, as she was driving by, two teen girls who’d long been harassing him yelled profane insults and made rude gestures ... to her! The adult! Just a few decades ago, those girls’ parents would have been notified and the girls would

Millersburg

A little something for everyone!

10048591

HCEDC, commission to administer Millersburg grant By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer Millersburg Council passed a resolution June 25 to allow the mayor to sign an agreement with the Holmes County Planning Commission and Holmes County Economic Development Council to administer the Tier II Downtown Building and Streetscape Revitalization grant. The downtown received $289,500 in state funding to match local dollars being reinvested into the area. “The funds have been released, the environmental review cleared, we’re pretty much ready to go on the grant, start taking applications from the building owners and then do the projects,” said Village Administrator Nate Troyer. The grant requires a minimum 1:1 match from the community. To that end, building owners, merchants and investors pledged

nearly $647,000 to transforming the downtown through building improvements. The projects range from $3,000 requests for window replacements to $385,000 for total retrofits. Other proposed projects include roof replacements, restroom installations, facade restorations, structural improvements, painting, electrical upgrades and heating, ventilation and air conditioning units. The total estimated cost for rehabilitation is $969,948. Once applications are approved, building owners can begin using the money to fund substantial renovation projects. More than 30 percent of the 56 businesses within the target area, an eight-block stretch from Monroe Street to Mad Anthony Street, plan to participate in the revitalization projects. Troyer has begun looking into scheduling lighting

upgrades for buildings. “In the near future we should know whether the LED lights will be approved for the Gridsmart program from AEP, then we will compare the costs and incentives of LED versus fluorescent lighting and make a final decision,” said Troyer in his report to council June 25. “Along with that, we'll have to come up with our match to that grant. … Hopefully we can knock our match out in the first year — it’s a two-year grant — so we can get that out of the way and focus on our projects after that,” he said. In other business, council approved a request from the New Pointe Church and the Holmes County Agricultural Exposition Center for approval of a revocable right of way use agreement for the freestanding sign along the west side of the driveway

at the location one mile west of Millersburg on state Route 39. “The right of way out there is about 85 feet away from their property. Obviously they want their sign a little closer than 85 feet from the road,” said Troyer. “So they are requesting to relocate the sign 20 feet off the edge of the pavement.” Interference with the utilities will not be an issue, added Troyer, as the utilities are located on the east side of the driveway. The village has allowed such revocable agreements before, said solicitor Bob Hines. “We’ve done this before where we give them permission to put up a sign subject to our right to revoke the easement if we need that area for road purposes, which is the reason for the 85-foot right of way. So it’s sort of a no-lose situation for us,” he said. “They get their sign and

Election officials urge voters to update registration information Election officials in Holmes County are urging citizens of the county to register to vote or update their existing voter information. “This year is a unique year for elections in Ohio,” said Lisa Welch, Holmes County Board of Elections director. “Each registered voter in the state will be receiving an application to vote by mail. In order to receive the application, our board of elections must have voters current registration information.” The Ohio Secretary of State is sending out vote by mail applications to every voter around Ohio. On July 4, all 88 counties will be submitting their voter rolls to the state to aid in the mailing. Voters need to have up to date information on file with the board of elections prior to this. While a supplemental mailing will be going out closer

to the election, voters will receive the most amount of time to complete the application if they are registered prior to July 4. Under Ohio law, only votes cast in the correct precinct can be counted. Consequently, it is imperative that the boards of elections have current information for each voter. “Having clean voter rolls is essential to running good elections, and we are asking for every voter to help us with this task,” said Welch. “Having up to date voter information not only helps us at the board of elections, it greatly increases the chance that every vote legally cast will be counted.” The deadline to register to vote for the Aug. 7, East Holmes Local School District Special Election falls on July 9. Please register early to also be included in the summer mailing for the November election.

Meanwhile, organic non-food sales, which reached $2.2 billion in 2011, experienced strong 11 percent growth, while total comparable nonorganic items grew only 5 percent. Prospects for 2012 and 2013, as indicated through the 2012 survey results, indicate that organic food and nonfood sales will continue to sustain growth levels of nine percent or higher. “With 94 percent of organic operations nationwide planning to maintain or increase employment in 2012, the organic sector will continue to fuel jobs, rural economies and

consumer choice,” said Bushway. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is the membership-based business association for organic agriculture and products in North America. OTA is the leading voice for the organic trade in the United States, representing over 6,500 organic businesses across 49 states. Its members include growers, shippers, processors, certifiers, farmers’ associations, distributors, importers, exporters, consultants, retailers and others. to pay for value-added products. Organic food sales experienced 9.4 percent growth in 2011. The easing of the recession, consumer price inflation due to input price increases, and consumers’ increasing desire for convenience products were all factors that elevated growth for the year. The organic food sector grew by $2.5 billion during 2011, with the fruit and vegetable category contributing close to 50 percent of those new dollars. The fastest-growing sector was the meat, fish and poultry category, posting 13 percent growth over 2010 sales, but still remaining the smallest of the eight organic food categories. Organic food sales now represent 4.2 percent of all U.S. food sales, up from 4 percent in 2010.

Organic Trade Association WASHINGTON, D.C. — Driven by consumer choice, the U.S. organic industry grew by 9.5 percent overall in 2011 to reach $31.5 billion in sales. Of this, the organic food and beverage sector was valued at $29.22 billion, while the organic non-food sector reached $2.2 billion, according to findings from the Organic Trade Association’s (OTA’s) 2012 Organic Industry Survey. These and other organic-related statistics were discussed in April in conjunction with the trade association’s 2012 Policy Conference and Hill Visit Days in Washington. “The U.S. organic sector continues to show steady and healthy growth, growing overall by 9.5 percent during 2011, and, for the first time, surpassing the $30 billion mark,” said Christine Bushway, OTA’s Executive Director and CEO. She added, “Consumers are increasingly engaged and discerning when they shop, making decisions based on their values and awareness about health and environmental concerns. For them, it matters whether foods are genetically engineered, or produced using practices that are good for their families. Price is still an issue, but with the wide availability of private label products and many venues for organic products, they have many choices for where to shop and a variety of products from which to choose.” Overall organic product sales growth of 9.5 percent continued to outpace total sales of comparable conventionally produced food and non-food items, which experienced 4.7 percent growth. The growth in organic sales is proof the consumer is willing

Thunder Over Holmes County brought out families, sunshine

Mike Schenk photos/www.buydrphotos.com

It was 90 degrees, but visitors to Thunder Over Holmes County enjoyed “ice” skating on a special man-made rink.

Logan and Tom (background) and Carson and Crystal Horn do a little family “bigfooting” as part of the activities at Thunder Over Holmes County.

Players stand inside the octagon and slap the ball with their hands at opponents. Skyview Ranch volunteers were taking turns playing with other kids from the community. Chase Ellis, 12, came downtown with his brother to check out the community event

“It gets pretty tiring,” he admitted, especially under Saturday’s sun. Besides gaga ball, Ellis and his brother said they planned to go into the bounce houses. Hailey Padden, 4, went ice skating for her first time ever at the artificial ice rink with her grandmother,

as well as dominate the gaga ball court. “I’ve played before ... I like it because you get to jump around, be active and have fun,” the Millersburg preteen said. Ellis was owning the competition in the afternoon, winning two out of three gaga ball games.

Holiday (Continued From Page 7) security and pride and our biggest concern is getting nailed in the head with a piece of hard candy. And then there’s the traditional cookout, with tables overflowing with summer salads and baked beans (a dish that we credit to our Native Americans,) and grills overflowing with hamburgers and hotdogs and even veggie burgers. Not only do we have the ability to feed ourselves in gluttonous ways, but we also have the luxury of eating any meat we want, or choosing not to eat meat at all. Our paper plates are nearly as full as our bellies when we’re finished, giving us a great reason to plop our ample selves down on the ground to stare up at the skies and await the greatest show not on Earth. With the night ablaze in

fireworks, I lose myself like a child in a candy store, oohing and ahhing and forget that this magnificent display of color and light is meant to be a reminder of the celebrations that ensued with our very first taste of freedom, hundreds of years ago. Personally, there is one thing for me that immediately snaps me back to reality and refreshes my mind of the things I learned in history class and the lack of freedoms that I see when I watch media coverage of other nations across this planet. Our national anthem, especially with a resounding drum roll at the beginning, is enough to get my mind rolling, my heart pounding, and I admit that at times it takes all I have not to pause and fight back tears of amazement of what a country it is in which I have the great fortune to live.

after getting her face painted and on the way to the bounce houses. “She loves it,” said Terri Loder, of Millersburg. “I’m just trying to stay upright,” she laughed though, while assisting her granddaughter. Loder said this was their first time to

By STEVEN F. HUSZAI Staff Writer Nearly 90-degree temperatures and sunshine blazed onto Millersburg at the Thunder Over Holmes County Independence Day Festival. The two-day celebration of the nation’s heritage along with the flavor of Holmes County featured games, contests, live entertainment, and food for the whole family. The festival concluded Saturday with its fireworks and a multitude of games, c o m p e t i t i o n s, and bounce houses on the courthouse lawn. S a t u r d a y ’s wholesome fun along Court Street packed a punch, where volunteers from Skyview Ranch set up a plethora of games and activities. At the “gaga ball” court, kids of all ages were playing a belowthe-knees variance on the classic dodgeball game. “The object of the game is to not get hit with the ball, otherwise you are out of the game,” said Rachel Wehrle, with Skyview Ranch. The game consists of a makeshift octagonal court and a kickball.

Knights getting tougher under Cugini’s watchful eye By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer It worked last year for Norwayne’s football team. Maybe it will work for West Holmes this year. Only time will tell. “I know it will pay off. It’s working at Norwayne. I know we’re going to get a lot out of this,” said West Holmes senior Brock Macaulay. “It” is extreme training under the guidance of nationally rated trainer and motivational speaker Lawrence “Rick” Cugini. More than 100 West Holmes athletes, boys and girls combined, paid $25 apiece to go through this seven-week program, that pushes the athletes through an extremely strenuous two-hour workout three days a week from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cugini calls himself an “agent of change,” who uses his past to help positively influence young people. “I worked in the department of youth services with juveniles in the juvenile courts and prisons in the Summit County area,” Cugini said. “I’ve done this stuff with my residents forever. I’ve always worked with at-risk kids.” He enjoys working with kids from West Holmes, just as he does the athletes at Norwayne, because they are willing to work. “I focus a lot on injury prevention,” Cugini said. “I did Norwayne last year and I think they had one

Other than that, they had their best season in history. Not that I had a great deal to do with it, because that was a great group of kids. They were hard workers. “I haven’t run into a group in Wayne County or Holmes County that’s not a good, hard-working group,” he continued. “There are very few prima donnas. They’re kids who just want to work and get better.” Unlike some of the

How good is Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay? Here’s one way to compare: When Halladay notched his 190th career win against just 92 losses at the beginning of the 2012 season, he became only the 10th pitcher in major league history to hit the 190-wins mark with no more than 92 losses, and only the fourth in the last 50 years. The other three, in order, were Whitey Ford (190-74, reached in 1963), Juan Marichal (190-87, in 1969), and Pedro Martinez (190-78, in 2005). Which team has the highest per-player average salary in all of sports, as of 2012? Here’s a hint - it’s not from North America. The answer is the Barcelona soccer team, whose players average $166,934 per week in salary. Second was Spanish rival Real Madrid at $149,935 per week. Out of the top 10, only three were American teams - the Los Angeles Lakers at number five, the New Yankees at six and the Philadelphia Phillies at nine. All five other spots in the top 10 were held by European soccer teams. Did you ever hear about the hole in one that went down as a three on the scorecard, two years after the same player fired a hole in one on the exact same hole? In 1995, Freddie Couples shot a memorable ace on the famous island green at No. 17 at the Tournament Players Championship. In 1997 - same hole, same course, same tournament. - Couples hit his tee shot into the water. He teed up again, lying two, and dropped his next tee shot into the hole for a par, the only time that’s ever happened on that hole.

When he told them it was break time, it really wasn’t. They were told to drink some water as they went from the hill to the football field, which seemed to be about a half-mile apart, in just three minutes. Once at the football field, groups would switch from running 100-yard sprints to doing pushups when their number was called. “The first week, there were about 100 people, and at least 30 of them were lined up puking on the side of the hill,” said West Holmes senior

Keaton Leppla. But now, halfway through the program, that is not the case, as the athletes are in much better shape. Two members of the West Holmes football team, Ben Smith and Jeff Young, reported losing 20 pounds apiece already. “We’ve come a long way in just 10 visits,” Cugini said. “We’re halfway home. “Some of the things we did today, I couldn’t have done with them the first couple weeks. Their bodies wouldn’t have understood how it can do five

or six different things at a time. But now their mind is starting to figure out it can do more than one or two things at a time.” Those are the kinds of rewards the athletes get through his program that includes working on and around the football field and also the hill on the band practice field. “We focus on the hill for about 15 minutes and we hit it as hard as we can,” Cugini said. “The body produces all the hormones to take them through the pain and then we can add the mental piece to it. We’ll go from the hill to the field and do another exercise. “It’s high intensity training that trains them for the game, whatever game they’re playing,” Cugini continued. “It works for either sports or school. I push these kids as hard as I can. It makes them not only physically stronger, but emotionally stronger.” By having all the athletes working together, boys and girls, young and old, it changes the dynamics of the school. The seniors and other varsity players are chosen as leaders and they bring all the kids together, leading by example. “This will definitely help us with the camaraderie we’re building,” Macaulay said. “It’s not just a one-sport thing. Everyone, as a school, is pulling together to get through.” Cugini called Monday’s

By MIKE PLANT Staff Writer Every team is a little nervous when starting the Little League 11-12 All-Star tournament, a long road that ends in Williamsport, Pa., in mid-August. Thursday, East Holmes overcame any of its first-game jitters by being first-game hitters. The EH All-Stars, opening their pool play at home against Wooster, pounded out 14 hits and a 12-0 win at Berlin Elementary. With three players away at church camp, East Holmes had only nine players in uniform, and five of them had multiple-hit games. Up 4-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the hosts added eight more runs on nine hits and ended the game when Ryan Aleshire got Wooster out in

“I sense there’s a willingness to do what’s best for the team. That, to me, is the key, buying into the team concept and not one, big ‘I’.” East Holmes coach Tim Yoder the fourth, in relief of starter Sam Raber. “We’re fitting together pretty good,” said Aleshire, who capped the big third inning with a two-run liner over the fence in right-center. “I think we’ll go pretty good in pool play, but we’ll go one game at a time.” Despite having just one practice, East Holmes, which has players with All-Star experience as 10-year-olds together, was solid in all phases Thursday. Its hit total included dou-

bles from Andy Miller (2-for-3) and Dustin Kurtz (2-for-2), Aleshire’s blast and three singles from Steven Beachy, it played error-free, and pitchers Raber and Aleshire gave up just one single apiece, combining for eight strikeouts and only one walk. “When you’ve got a good team is when your 7-, 8- and 9-hitters hit. It makes a huge difference,” East Holmes coach Tim Yoder said. “We See Pg. 25 — EAST HOLMES
