Community Differing paths can lead to same destination “It’s one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it’s another to think that yours is the only path.” — Paulo Coelho. The people who make me the most crazy are the ones who think their life path is the only “right” one. How presumptuous and egotistical to think you are right and anyone who disagrees with you, or takes a different path, is wrong. Let’s say you and I are both going on a wellplanned vacation this year. We may even be going to the same place, say Salem, Mass., for example. (I like to visit Salem, brings me in touch with my old relatives, if you follow.) Now, even though we may be going to the same place, we won’t necessarily take the same path to get there. The point isn’t to follow the same trail, so long as we get where we want to
go. Many factors may affect what path we choose to take. Where we live, how we feel about highways versus back roads, scenic route versus most straightforward route, kind of car we have, and so forth. It doesn’t really matter what path we take; we’d both get to the same point eventually. Every summer, when I was a teen, my mom made me do all the housework. Yet she’d always complain that I didn’t do it “right,” meaning I didn’t do it the way she did. She’d tear up the whole house and it’d take her all day to finish. I’d start in the bedrooms and work my
way around doing one room at a time and be done in a few hours. It didn’t matter that I didn’t follow the same path she did; the house was clean! I was not good at math in school and I’m still not. In fact, if my checkbook balances my bank calls to see if it’s been stolen. Part of my issue was the strict educational system I was in refused to allow us to come to answers — even if CORRECT — using our own systems; we had to follow theirs. My mind does not work in mathematical logical manner; I’m creative. I could get the correct answer, but “showing my work” is what messed me up. I could come to the desired end in math, but sometimes I couldn’t follow the same path the teacher did to get there. SO WHAT?! We’ve all taken criticism, I’m sure, from people for many years of our
lives because we didn’t do things the way our parents, our siblings, our friends, or the children of our parents’ friends did. We forged our own paths instead. But think of the most accomplished figures in our culture’s history. Most often they were people who diverged from accepted pathways and forged new pathways that many of us are still benefitting from. For example, if Ben Franklin hadn’t pushed forward in pursuit of his belief in electricity — in spite of ridicule from others — I’d be chiseling this column into stone. Wouldn’t the world be so much more pleasant if we simply waved at each other as our divergent paths crossed, rather than shaking our fists at those on what we perceive to be the “wrong” path?

A taste of the season that is tough to ‘beet’ If you think it’s steamy outside, you ought to see my kitchen! With midsummer quickly rolling our way, the pick of the season is starting to show up by the quart, peck and bushel at local vegetable stands and farmer’s markets. Zucchini, green beans, onions, summer squash — I don’t discriminate much; if it’ll fit in my steamer it’ll land on my menu. I pass a vegetable farm on Carr Road every day on my route to and from work, and watch the sign out
front more closely than the weather at this time of year. The one steamer-stuffer that rises above all others for me is the red beet. I’ve been a beet junky since I was little, and surely my first introduction to the delicious red
root was my mother’s “Harvard Beets” — a dish she has whipped up for my birthday for each of the last 40-odd years! (She spoils me, it’s true; there’s just no getting around that one.) I’m a year-round beet eater and can frequently be observed popping open a can from the grocery to fork the entire contents into my face and then chase it by chugging the juice! My children consider this one of my signature “crazy old man” acts,
and I typically humor them by making sure that I dribble some of the blood-red juice down my chin and chase them around like a vampire. Canned beets are wonderful, indeed, but just as with most anything that grows from the ground, they pale in splendor to their garden-fresh counterparts that have been yanked up only hours before! Most of my own family and many of my friends have grown to at least tolerate red beets although

Interestingly, I find very few people who vehemently dislike them; however, I did have a conversation recently with a friend who admitted to a certain level of disdain for my beloved root. “I don’t know exactly what it is,” she said. “I think it’s got a lot to do with the fact that they taste so much like dirt.” “Like dirt?” I replied. “You do realize that most folks at least dust them off before plopping them in the pot, right?” “Very funny, John. Yes, I assure you that any beet that has ever arrived on my plate has been thoroughly scoured. It’s just that they’ve got that “earthy funk” to them— sort of like radishes.” “Sacrilege!” I cried. “You dare to lump my beloved beets in with a root so reviled it is invariably the very last item remaining on every vegetable tray
upon which it appears? Those are fightin’ words, woman!” “Oh, now,” she said digging in her heels. “I don’t think radishes are as universally despised as you might imagine.” “Really? How many people do you know who actually like radishes?” I asked. “I know only one: my sister, Sandy, and I figure that was just a consequence of the odds. When you have eight kids in the family one of them is bound to end up with a weird gene or two.” “Weird gene, hah!” she said. “I’ll have you know that my own mother happens to LOVE radishes!” I blinked dramatically, opened my eyes wide and raised my eyebrows. “I think we’re done here,” she growled and stomped away — probably in the direction of the nearest radish patch! It’s our duty to educate our children Editor: Boys and girls living in the East Holmes School District face a challenging future in which brainpower will be more essential than muscle power. No longer can they follow in our footsteps. They will need a high-quality education provided by a modern school system. East Holmes has been such a system — achieving an Excellent with Distinction rating from the Ohio State Board of Education while maintaining topnotch athletic, arts and music programs. Today, however, East Holmes is struggling to overcome reductions in federal and state funding and rising operating
costs. Our dedicated school board , administration, faculty and staff are squeezing maximum returns from each dollar provided by taxpayers. But it’s not enough. Additional funding is necessary to meet the expanding needs of our boys and girls. Thus, we again are being asked to approve a 3.77-mill, five-year, levy on Tuesday, Aug. 7. I’m a senior citizen living on retirement income. I’ll feel the pinch like everyone else. My rent will go up to cover higher school taxes paid by my landlord. But I recognize an obligation —a duty — to tap my limited resources in order to educate the children who must carry our nation in the decades ahead. Without a highquality education, they will be unable to cope with a challenging future. The fallout will be felt right here in Holmes County. Amish Country Theater is big hit with locals, tourists The Amish Country Theater has launched and is flying high — entertaining the visitors and residents of Ohio’s Amish Country. The brand new theater is beginning its second month of shows, and has already received glowing reviews from tourists and local residents. Guests are greeted by a first-class blue grass band and treated toa cast of comedic characters including a host, magician, a quick-witted country bumpkin named Lynyrd, clean stand-up comedians, and many other entertaining characters. Carol Glessner has been offering bus tours with Country Coach Adventures in Beach City for 20 years. “I haven’t laughed like that in years,” said Glessner. “The barnlike setting is so perfect, the view of the valley is awesome, and the seats,
sound, lighting, were all professionally done. I look forward to seeing it again, and again!” The 325-seat auditorium is designed to replicate an authentic Amish barn featuring professional audio and lighting, air-conditioning and comfortable theater chairs. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy homemade concessions and the breathtaking view of the Amish Country valley. The Amish Country Theater has also been popular with the local residents. “We have been getting a great response from the local community,” says co-owner Jeff Conn. “Locals have really enjoyed the show and have come back bringing family and friends. We went to great lengths to ensure that our show was respectful and not
offensive in any way to our community. I believe that’s why our show has been so popular within the community. It’s a fun place to bring your family for good, clean music and entertainment.” Locals who remember the old flea market will be amazed at the renovations that took place. The 12,000 square-foot area was renovated and remodeled to host an authentic Amish Barn and Barnyard. Guests first enter into the Barnyard which features an 18-foot windmill, an authentic Hen House, and a patio overlooking the Amish Valley. Then guests enter the barnthemed theater through giant sliding doors. The inside of the barn contains 325 theater chairs, a raised 20-foot stage, giant lofts, antique decorations and a beautiful mural.

For me, it’s a shot of myself around 3 years old. I am standing on our back deck in the sunshine, and I’ve got a perfectly shaped black mustache, thanks to my short career of singing into the hose of the Shop Vac which was just used to clean out the fireplace. I’m pretty sure I’m wearing a green shirt, but like most pictures from the past, the colors that were never that great in the first place have faded away over time. The telltale white border around the outside of the square photograph is starting to curl and yellow from age, and the actual quality of the photograph pales in comparison to what we can do today, even on our cell phones. But there’s just something about those old pictures. Today, whether or not you are tech savvy, actual cameras are practically a thing of the past. Ask a kid what “film” is and they’ll give you the same blank stare they give when you ask them what it means to “rewind” something. The mere

those special shots that we once waited weeks to see. There was trust involved … Did you actually get that shot? And of course, suspense … When, oh when will the photo booth open?!? But mostly there was the limited number of memories you could grab with your camera. You had to consider if something was good enough to spend the money on shooting and printing, and then you had to get it just right because that shot was your only chance. And chances are you got it. Sure, there are plenty of pictures that contain thumbs over the lens and closed eyes and blurred faces. But there are some that freeze the ideal moment in time so much that I have to wonder was the world truly black and white when my grandparents were small? And in the late 1970s were the colors dim and muted? I’m not sure I want to know the answer, even if there was an app for that.

idea of having to take 24 photos and then drive somewhere to turn them in for developing, only to wait a week to get them back, would about blow the mind of anyone born in the last 15 years. The cameras of even recent times have been replaced by cell phones, a conveniently on-hand device that lets us take pictures just about anywhere, anytime, where they are easily uploaded to social websites so that all of our friends can keep visual tabs on our lives. The ease of photography these days leads to an excessive amount of pictures, and I wouldn’t be surprised if only 5 percent of what is taken actually ends up printed on a piece of paper. What was once a special moment that you hoped you captured is now a string of 14 shots, because one of them is
bound to be good. So I have to wonder, have we lost the wonderment that is the photograph? Maybe. But I think it’s coming back. Because of the ease of smart phone applications, people are now able to take their bazillion photographs and convert them into those old-fashioned looking pictures. You can make them black and white, sepia tone, washed out, and even fade those colors just like the mustache picture from youth. You can add that classic white border to the square photo, or even one that looks like torn paper. And then you can share it for all of your friends to see. Extremely simple, extremely clever, and as some might think, extremely comical to see people with their expensive smart phones purchasing apps to make their photos look old and worn out. I think there’s a reason we’re all jumping on this insta-memory bandwagon. I think we miss

They will go to any length and make any sacrifice necessary just to make sure they can attend a Buckeye’s game. For some farmers the passion is pulling tractors. Hours of hard work and many dollars are spent for the thrill of roaring down the track and going the distance. Some spend hours ham-

I stopped in one Sunday when he and his wife were eating dinner. It consisted of cornbread with a little white Karo on it and cups of hot water to drink. Most people didn’t understand why his wife spent many years in and out of mental hospitals. I did! Her later years were spent in a rest
home where she thoroughly enjoyed drinking coffee and pop and eating all she wanted. When he died he didn’t have enough friends to carry his casket, but he had money in the bank! Showing registered Holsteins or any other breed is a passion. For some the satisfaction comes from searching all over the country for that “winner” and buying her. The joy for others is in choosing the mating, getting the heifer calf, and watching her grow into an outstanding individual capable of winning the shows. Some derive their satisfaction from being the one who has the ability to fit and prepare the winners. Averaging the most pounds per cow in the bulk tank is the goal for some. Others want to grow the best field of corn or make the best bale of alfalfa hay. For our youth the passion may be owning their own registered
animal, winning a showmanship contest or their first trophy, achieving a 4.0 grade point average, getting a scholarship, becoming a top athlete, or learning to be the best in their chosen trade or career. Everyone should have a passion in their life regardless of what it is. It brings you joy and satisfaction. It makes you want to get out of bed in the morning and gives you strength and will power to keep going when times are tough. Often people will question why you do it, why you work so hard, and why you spend your money and the time. And they may shake their heads and call you foolish. Preparations are under way for the 47th annual Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale and Auction held annually at Central Christian School in Kidron. The Relief Sale begins on Friday afternoon, Aug. 3. Food and vendor booths will be open at 4 p.m. The evening program will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a variety of music by John Schmid, the Miller Sisters and the Loren Glick Family. Everyone will be able to preview Saturday’s auction items. Again, there will be a silent auction of theme baskets and other donated handmade items. On Saturday morning, breakfast starts at 7 a.m. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and biscuits, and more. The Run for Relief 5K run will be held at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., the Art and Collectible Auction starts in the large tent and the Wood & Tool Auction starts in the gymnasium. The Quilt Auction will begin at 10 a.m. Gerber’s chicken barbecue, Laotian egg rolls, homemade ice cream and much more will be available for lunch. The fourth annual

Miller, turns 100 years old this year. Miller’s Monster has been at Doughty Valley several times, but this year is different because it is celebrating its centennial and it may be its last trip to Doughty Valley. “I am getting older and moving the monster machine is a lot of work. This may be the last year I will take it out of storage for a steam event,” Miller said. The monster machine is a mechanical marvel by

Miller, turns 100 years old this year. any measure, but the story of machine restoration is one of a labor of love and dedication to craftsmanship. It was built in 1912 in Racine, Wis. and delivered to Alberta, Canada where it remained in the ownership of the same family for decades. Miller saw it advertised in the Canadian Antique Magazine and purchased it in 1998. Although, the engine was still in comparatively good shape, it did not meet the craftsmanship standards of Miller so he set about putting
it back into mint condition. Miller disassembled the machine completely and restored each piece back to original specifications. All of the flu pipes that run through the boiler from the firebox to the smokestack were replaced and the boiler recertified to State of Ohio standards. In fact, the Ohio Department of Commerce Boiler and Pressure Vessel personnel have used Miller’s machine as a standard of quality and safety. Miller spent 10 years on
its restoration including a complete replacement of the cab and tender that holds coal and water for fuel. The job was finished with a paint job that includes pin-striped gold detail by local artist Mahlon Troyer. “I told Mahlon what I wanted, and he did a fantastic job, just like I wanted it,” Miller said of the artist’s work. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 14 at 10 a.m. at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, with pastor John Damron officiating. Burial will be in Killbuck Cemetery. She loved to bake and enjoyed going to garage sales. Surviving in addition to her husband, are children Wendy (Bill) Hutchison of Wooster, Dave (Elizabeth) Montgomery of Fredericksburg and Fred A. Sheets shows slow and steady wins The Challenge
Back nine at Black Diamond always gets me I generally shoot about 12-over par for nine holes, playing on courses I’m familiar with. Even though I live a couple of good 3-woods from Black Diamond, it is not a course I frequent that often because it is a little too tough for a player of my caliber. It was tough enough on Friday for The Daily Record Golf Challenge, but I was able to play right with the trio of readers taking this week’s challenge. A couple bad holes where I got the yips with my pitching wedge led to a couple snowmen (8’s) on the back nine, but overall, I thought I played pretty well, carding a 99. I’m always happy when I can break 100, especially on a course as tough as Black Diamond. I chunked my second shot of the day, but it was still in the fairway and I wound up getting a double-bogey. I got bogeys on the next two holes and finally got a par on the tight par-4 fourth, utilizing the only club I hit straight consistently, my 5-wood. A safe drive, a nice second shot and a two-putt made me feel like I could play with the big boys. Riding high with confidence, I parred the next hole as well, hitting a five-foot putt. Reality check. Even though I was in great shape with my drive on No. 6, I got the yips with my chipper and wound up with a triple bogey. It took me four chips to get on the green! I hit a good drive on the par-6 seventh and was feeling good about my chances until I knocked my 3-wood out-ofbounds, leading to a doublebogey. I recovered nicely with an excellent 5-wood, and chipped close, but misfired on the putt. Unfazed, I drove the green on the par-3 eighth hole and See Pg. 24 — LYNCH

That was the case for Steve Sheets at Black Diamond in The Daily Record Golf Challenge on Friday, as the self proclaimed “Plodder” played slow and steady golf, avoiding trouble and making just enough pars to pull out a onestroke win over the two challengers. Sheets, an 11 handicap, eked out an 88, narrowly nipping challengers Robert Biddle and Joe Ricci. Biddle carded a 90 and Ricci a 96, but with their 12 and 18 handicaps, respectively, they finished one stroke off the pace. “They gave it to me,” Sheets said. “It was fun, it’s always fun. This course is brutal.” Biddle started out strong, carding a birdie on the 490-yard par-5 first hole. “Don’t expect many more,” he said with a laugh. Sheets’ straight drive and straight second shot led to a par, and Ricci scored a bogey. Sheets and Biddle both scored pars on the second hole, taking advantage of straight drives. Ricci’s drive was wide of the fairway, and a three-putt led to a double bogey. All three players had a hard time on the third hole, carding doubles. Sheets suffered his first three-putt of the day. The narrow fourth fairway forced Biddle to use his hybrid off the tee and it worked to his advantage, leading to a par. Sheets went awry of the fairway and led to another double, while Ricci’s second shot made it to the green, where he twoputted for par. “That’s the first, and hopefully not the last,” Ricci said with a laugh. On the par-3 fifth hole, Ricci’s tee shot was about 10 feet from the flag, leading to a par, while Biddle three-putted for a bogey. Lynch managed a par, then finished out the front nine with another par. Shooting 46 on the front was good — for me — but the back nine got the best of me. Double, double, quadruple-bogey and another double is no way to start out, but that’s how the back started for me. I drove the green on the par-3 11th hole, but fourputted my way to a five. On the 514-yard, par-5
14th hole, the second toughest on the course, I played it like a pro. A great drive, and an even better 5-wood, put me about 100 yards out, from where I chipped on and two-putted for the lone par in the foursome. I tripled and doubled the next two holes, so as not to get too big a head, but managed a par on the par-3 17th, thanks to a solid six-iron off the tee. Two shots out of bounds on 18 led to a

That wasn’t the case in the second inning, as it sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven times on two hits and four East Holmes errors. NC also took advantage of four walks and several wild pitches to take control of the contest. “We were really flat coming out tonight,” East Holmes manager Tim Yoder said. “We had a tough game last night, and you never know how kids are going to react. But there was no energy — none. “We kicked the ball around the first couple innings and they hit the ball too,” Yoder added. “I told our boys, the last two nights we saw what winning baseball looks like. Both Dover and North Canton made all the plays in the field.” Zach Martin and Jordan Hite blasted big bombs off East Holmes reliever Alec Yoder to take a 12-0 lead after three innings. “We were hoping for a little better representation than what we did, but I’m proud of these boys. “We were down 12-0 and they could’ve really laid down, Yoder said. “We came back and scored three runs. I felt like, if we could’ve scored a few
more runs, we could’ve almost got their attention.” With a comfortable lead, North Canton pulled their starting pitcher, Jordan Hilte, after 20 pitches to save him for the next game. Reliever Noah Miller had a hard time finding the plate. He walked four and gave up a double to Alec Yoder as East Holmes rallied for three runs in the home half of the third inning. The Hawks went 1-2-3 in the fourth against lefty reliever Ryan Murphy and that was all she wrote. “I think we got to where I expected,” Yoder said. “We made the Final Four. I told them not to hang their heads. I thought they did a great job of not getting carried away with the moment. They really stayed within themselves.” The Hawks went 3-1 in pool play to earn a berth in the four-team playoff. Their loss was an 11-1 thumping at the hands of Dover. Dover then blanked East Holmes 10-0 in the opening round of the playoffs on Wednesday. New Philadelphia, the wild card team in the four-team tourney, stunned previously undefeated and top-seeded North Canton 11-9 to advance against Dover, also on Thursday.

Obituaries Jerry Uhl, 88 Jerry Uhl, 88, of Millersburg, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Majora Lane Care Center, Millersburg, following an extended illness. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, July 19) at Faith Lutheran Church, Millersburg, with Rev. Daniel Grimminger officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg. He was born on June 27, 1924 in Topeka, Kan., and was the son of Jerry and Elizabeth (Korns) Uhl Sr. On Oct. 27, 1946 he married Lavonne Strock and she survives. He was a lifetime farmer. In 1958 he received the Farmer of the Year award by the Cleveland Farmers Club. Jerry was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where he was both a member of the choir and served on the church coun-
cil. He was a member of the Holmes County Farm Bureau, Grange, Holmes Soil and Water Conservation Board and the PCA Board. Jerry served on the Holmes County Fair Board for more than 30 years and was a past member of the Millersburg Lion’s Club. Surviving in addition to his wife, Lavonne are two sons and their spouses; Floyd (Rose) Uhl and Gary (Lois) Uhl, both of Millersburg; three granddaughters, Nichole (Ro) Hernandez, Kara (JB) Barton and Trisha Uhl, all of Millersburg; and two great grandchildren, Jayce Barton and Madison Hernandez. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his three brothers, Perry, Painter and Robert Uhl. Arrangements were handled by Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg. Matthew Ewing, 40 Matthew Aaron Ewing, 40, of Wooster, passed a w a y peacef u l l y with his family and fiancee by his side on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Akron General Medical Center, from the results of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was born July 4, 1972, in Holmesville to Lane and Patricia (Dilworth) Ewing, and graduated in 1991 from Triway High School. Matt’s home was in the Melrose Mobile Home Park with his cat, Pink Floyd. After a period of declining health, Matt had two modes of transportation, his car and electric wheelchair. Many will miss Matt riding his wheelchair through the park to get his mail and to visit with his friends. Matt had a great sense of h u m o r,
enjoyed muscle cars, NASCAR and visiting with his many friends in the Park. Andrew Stitzlein, 32 Andrew M. Stitzlein, 32, of rural Loudonville, died We d n e s day afternoon, July 4, 2012, surrounded by his family at Wo o s t e r C o m munity Hospital after a 10-month illness. A n d y was born Dec. 4, 1979, in Wooster, living in the Loudonville area all of his life. He was a 1999 graduate of Loudonville High School and ATI/ OSU in 2002. He was a member of Loudonville FFA, where he received his State Farmer and American Farmer degrees. Andy was a National finalist for wheat production and won the National Award for soy bean production. He was the secretary of the Holmes County Farm Bureau Board of Trustees and a member of Loudonville Fair Tractor Pull Committee. Andy was the past president of the Loudonville FFA Alumni Association and was the 1999 Kettering Scholarship recipient for agricultural study. He was a life member of Zion Lutheran Church and also attended New Hope Community Church, both of Loudonville. He was an avid collector of miniature farm tractors toys.
Andy received a kidney transplant from his mother in 1990 and his sister in 2006 and was involved with Team Ohio Transplant Athletics. Lovina Hartzler, 86 Lovina J. Hartzler, 86, of 210 Pleasant Valley Road, Sugarcreek, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 2, 2012, just 10 days after her loving husband of 67 years, Glade Hartzler, entered his heavenly home. She was born May 8, 1926, in Hutchinson, Kan., to the late Jacob and Emma (Troyer) Helmuth. Lovina was a member of Alpine Bible Church at Sugarcreek. She possessed a loving and generous spirit that was joy to all who knew her. She loved nothing more than to welcome people into her home and served countless meals for family, relatives, church members and friends new and old around her table. She was an avid reader and accomplished seamstress, longtime Sunday school teacher and most recently enjoyed leading a women’s Bible study the past 17 years. She loved to laugh and always wore a twinkle in her eye. She was married May 30, 1945, to Glade C. Hartzler and he died June 22, 2012. She is survived by her children Gladene (Herb) Hershberger of Wooster, Ed (Lonnie) Hartzler of Baltic, Fred (Pam) Hartzler and Joyce (Jim) Scherer both of Sugarcreek; 11 grandchildren;
