Community Luxuries come at cost of hard work
“(My husband) sat me down and told me I was going to create a monster if I continued to act as though ‘no’ and ‘I don’t love you’ were synonymous.” — Anna Quindlen, from Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake.
I read a study in a professional journal a few weeks ago that had followed a generation of kids from birth to age 25. These were kids from what the authors called the “tethered generation,” those kids whose parents had total contact with them 24/7 from birth on. They were also the kids, the study said, that were the most indulged in the history of this country. The results? Not good. The study found that these now “adults” were unmotivated, spoiled, unwilling to follow rules, and had a higher percentage of rap sheets (some, granted, were petty crimes) than any other generation before. This study showed that these kids were going into the work place unwilling
to do what was required of them. They wanted to go to work at 10 and leave at 4. They told their prospective employers what they would and would not do, as well as expecting outrageous salaries in the starting gate. They showed up to job interviews dressed in shorts, T-shirts, and flip-flops, looking, one interviewer said, “like they were headed to the beach and not ready to get down to work.” My children were important to me, just as this country and this world are important to me. My children and grandchildren (if I ever have any!) will have to live in this world. I worry about that. What kind of world is it going to be for my grandchildren if it continues to be so permissive and irresponsible?
My children (now grown, thank goodness) were not angels. They were often bratty, sometimes sweet, often annoying and frequently misbehaved. My son went through most of his high school years without any video game privileges because he refused to do school work. My daughter spent many afternoons and evenings in her room rethinking how she could better use her mouth. But we also spent a lot of fun times with our children. Sometimes we laughed so hard together that our ribs hurt. We taught them to respect themselves as well as the feelings of others. We told them ‘no,’ and they quickly learned to appreciate the cases when ‘yes’ came up. Their every whim was not indulged, and they learned to appreciate what they did have. I’m sure there were times they hated us. That’s OK. The parents’ job is not to have their kids love them; their job is to raise beings that
become responsible, respectable adults who contribute to, not leech from, society. Adults who learn that the pleasures of life come at the cost of hard work, and not just handed to you on the public’s dime via a government check. If you take a new piece of clay, it is soft and easy to mold. But if you let the clay age and sit without attention to it, it will become hard and impossible to mold. Children, too, are shaped and molded from birth; their values will be ingrained before they reach their late teens. And children who grow up overindulged and undisciplined grow into reckless adults who are a drain on our social systems. Proverbs 13:18 — “He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.” Proverbs 23:13,14 — He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” How much more reliable advice do we need?

As the leaves turn color and fall to the ground they nourish the soil as they decay and they protect the tree’s dormant roots from winter’s chill. Though the leafless branches may seem sad, we know it is part of God’s plan. We do not question His wisdom since we know summer will come again. By the same token, we must have the faith to accept the sad times that we are helpless to change, realizing that God’s plan for our lives is at work even if we can’t see it. Experience has taught us that happy times will come again. Life will change, but God remains steady. Praise Him in worship this week. 1 Samuel 24:1–22

ness Sales, with most stores being open until 9 p.m., and self-guided tours will be available for Halloween at the Victorian House Mansion from 7-9 p.m. In addition, HDM is currently working with Century Link to show the OSU vs. Penn State game on the courthouse lawn. Other activities include pumpkin bowling, corn hole tossing, games, face painting and a pet costume contest. For the pet costume contest, categories will include best dog costume, best group, best animated character, best dog and float and best dog and owner. “Last year was a big event, we had several people come out and enjoy themselves with that,” said contest organizer Rachelle Vance. Some memorable costumes last year were a great dane dressed up as
a cow and a group of dogs wearing cowboy costumes. The contest will begin at 4 p.m. Participants are also encouraged to dress up and HDM staff and volunteers will be in costume. “People want to have something fun to do in Halloween fashion. This is not a gory thing, it’s not overly scary and the downtown walks are based on historical facts,” said McCulloch. “It’s appropriate for kids if your children have the temperament for it. By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer Explore the downtown in a whole new way on Saturday when Historic Downtown Millersburg presents Boo in the ’Burg. “We encourage everybody to walk in the downtown, shop the stores, eat in our restaurants and enjoy this fantastic little town that we have and all that it has to offer,” said HDM Executive Director Tara McCulloch. “It’s something to do right here in Millersburg that is very unique, very popular and attracts a lot of people from out of town. I hope locals will come take advantage of it, too.” This year, ghost walks touring the Old Jail basement, the Old Masonic Temple and the downtown will steep participants in the spooky stories of the downtown’s most historic centers. “Eight years ago it started with one downtown walk; now we have three,” said McCulloch. “They are very popular; people come in from all over the place and get very excited. The early walks will sell out fast.”

East Holmes FFA On Sept. 8, Hiland FFA members participated in the Harvest Festival Parade in Berlin. The theme of the float was “The 85th Anniversary of FFA.” FFA started in 1928. In 1988, the Future Farmers of America name was changed to National FFA Organization, known as FFA. Students decorated the float with blue and yellow balloons with the
FFA emblems, hay bales and Hiland FFA signs. Bud Raber, father of Taylor Raber, drove the 4020 John Deere tractor which pulled the float. Forget chocolate — life is like a pile of leaves season, we have a few options. We can rake them ourselves, hire someone, invest in a leaf blower so the job goes more swiftly but annoys the neighbors with the loud noise, grind them up with a lawnmower, or just leave them be. According to the experts, the option is up

Bingo is not just a game I’m no stranger to the game of bingo. Matter of fact, thanks in large part to my Catholic upbringing, I bet I’ve got a whole lot more real-world experience with the game than most folks my age. I conjure gauzy memories of marveling over the rattle of balls inside a chickenwire barrel while standing next to a folding chair in the church hall, my diaper still higher than my mother’s lap. There was additional utility in staying low at the Moose, for to stand tall, even at the lofty height of three feet, meant venturing into a haze of smoke so thick it could turn your eyelids and earlobes into jerky. I learned some important things about bingo in those formative days. First, those who played (with the exception of my dear mother, of course) had little or no patience with those not acutely

Miraculously, the first session of bingo went off without a hitch. We awarded a tableful of donated items: gift certificates, baskets and half a dozen hearty mums. Emboldened by my success I had a little more fun with the crowd in round two. The prizes scattered across the auditorium with random and

Undiscriminating program The Berks County Agricultural Land Preservation program, which has spent nearly $140 million of state and county money buying agricultural conservation easements in the last 22 years, is government-run. Hence, faith plays no role in its work. But there also is no discrimination in its research-intensive, numbers-driven process related to farm type. Operations that focus on corn, soybeans, organic production, apples and grapes all get treated the same. “Our concern is the land,” said Tami S. Hildebrand, executive director of the county Agricultural Land Preservation Board. “The future is open. That’s the beauty. We don’t know what it will bring. We don’t know if it will be hydroponics, organic or aqua-culture.” The Berks program, working in tandem with the state, has become a nationally ranked powerhouse at preserving farmland. Only two other counties in the nation have preserved more land. At its heart are numbers. Every factor in preservation decisions — like the quality of soil, proximity to other preserved farms and threat of development — gets a numerical value. The numbers for applicant farms are crunched once a year. Each farm gets a ranking.
The board starts at the top of its ranking list and offers farm owners payment in exchange for the placement of conservation easements, accepting as many farms as funding will allow. The payment rate in recent years was capped at $2,500 an acre. Farmers do not always accept. Tax ramifications, dynamics at neighboring farms and other factors may influence their thinking. This year, Hildebrand said, the board sent out 18 letters of selection, and seven recipients dropped out. That triggered another round of letters. County farmers have become intimately familiar with the mechanics of the county-state system. Kervin Weaver’s 66-acre farm in Richmond Township was accepted this year. Proximity to other preserved farms, he said, was key. He said, “I got it on the first application.” Organic farming advocate Mark Smallwood thinks it may be time to modify the selection process. Smallwood, executive director of Rodale Institute, an internationally recognized leader in organic research in Maxatawny Township, said the growth and influence of organics warrant a place in preservation. “We have this land preserved, now what?” he asked. “Let’s take it to the next step and have it preserved in organic production.”

Next generation takes over Strands of electrical fence crisscross Stricker’s gently sloping hills, dividing the pasture land into about 60 paddocks. About 145 milk cows graze in one, then another, in rotation. Thus, the naturally growing grasses and weeds get time to restore themselves. About 100 laying hens roam free around a portable chicken coop. Their natural diet is a key to their health. “They are eating bugs, they are eating grass, they are eating clover,” Stricker said. The conversion to organic was not easy. Neighbors poked fun at Stricker’s operation as a “weed farm” after he stopped using synthetic herbicides. But his farm received official organic certification in 2002, giving it access to organic markets. Spring Creek Farms sells certified organic raw milk, cheese, butter and hamburger, among other things. “Faith carried me through,” Stricker said. His 29-year-old son, Greg, is in the process of buying the farm. He grew up working the land with his father, earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering at Penn State University and believes in the organic approach. “Traditional agriculture, right now, is creating sterile, dead farms,” he said.

A return to the farm Forrest Stricker’s father, Carl Stricker, told his son he would go broke with organic farming. “He said, ‘Forrest, you are going to lose the farm,’” Forrest Stricker recalled. Even his wife, Barbara, was against the switch. But Stricker’s convictions ran deep. He had discovered how much he loved the work only when he left it. He grew up working the farm with his father, graduated from Conrad Weiser High School in 1972 and earned a degree in electrical engineering technology from Penn State Berks. Afterward, he got an indoors job at DuPont in Newark, Del., helping to create electrical diagrams. He hated being cooped up. He sometimes stood by a window at DuPont, wondering what he was doing there. “It was the old cliché,” he said. “You can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.” He returned to the farm in Berks. He and his wife eventually bought it from his parents and — after his discovery of his faith, and over the objections of Barbara and Carl Stricker — he committed himself to organics. “It all starts in the soil,” he said. “If you have healthy soil, you are going to have healthy plants, and then if you have animals eating those plants, you are going to have healthy animals.”

By FORD TURNER Reading Eagle WERNERSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — One hundred and eighty acres of good soil was saved, almost literally, on Aug. 19, 1986. That was the day Forrest Stricker, a farmer, found his true faith. Four generations of his family had worked land on the Heidelberg-Lower Heidelberg township line. Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides had become standard tools. When he became a born-again Christian, Stricker concluded such substances killed the soil and compromised the health of his animals. And so he began a challenging, years-long con-

David Christopher, master herbalist, shares knowledge By DANIEL A. HERSHBERGER
The town of Mount Hope has played host to

so many events for this area over the years, that it is nearly a given that you could go to this bustling little town on any Saturday and always find something wholesome to take along home. Wholesome is what it was all about on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Mount Hope Auction, Produce Building. David Christopher, Master Herbalist from Utah, shared his wholesome knowledge about herbs, diet and the basic understanding of how our bodies function. Despite Chris-
topher being a Master Herbalist, the attendees were soon to learn that his emphasis wasn’t just on taking herbs for health conditions, but also about how diet can affect our health. He explained how refined foods that we eat can be the root cause for some of our health problems. A motto that Christopher would exclaim occasionally from the stage to drive a point home was “grow up and eat like an adult should.” After presenting the resulting consequences
of eating a diet of refined foods, Christopher didn’t leave the situation hanging in the negative. He made it positive by willfully sharing and explaining a solution by eating specific whole foods and herbs for various health conditions. He shared why he feels herbs are part of the master plan on this Earth. Humans are created from the dust of the Earth, and all herbs are a whole food that grow from this same dust, therefore, our bodies can recognize it, and value it as a food.
The main topics covered throughout the day were diabetes, heart disease, cancer, allergies, and the 10 most needed herbs for the home. The final focus of the day was a question and answer session. Christopher was so intrigued by what this community is doing with herbs, and R & R Herbs, the host of this seminar, was so inspired with the outpouring of interest that they have Christopher already scheduled for next year Aug. 24, 2013.

Putting the ‘special’ into pharmacy use ARAContent — Americans have come to expect specialized care from their physicians as growing numbers depend on the expertise of cardiologists, oncologists and endocrinologists. This evolution has also become just as important when it comes to pharmacists and the specific care they can give patients. Pharmacists can specialize in chronic health conditions such as asthma, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. These specialist pharmacists will play an increasingly important role as health care and patient expectations continue to change. October marks American
Pharmacists Month and is a reminder of the value specialist pharmacists can bring to patients. Specialist pharmacists are the real experts when it comes to the medications used to treat chronic diseases, yet people’s first inclination is to call their doctor when they have a question or concern about a drug, says Paul Reyes, host of the “Ask the Pharmacist” radio series and a registered pharmacist for Express Scripts. “There is no clinician who is better trained in prescription medications or spends as much time addressing patients’ questions and concerns about their drug
Leaves (Continued From Page 13) about their lawn, but use the actual act of raking to beef up their muscles or punish their children. Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle. On one hand, I appreciate the natural cycle involved with returning the nutrients of the leaves to the Earth. There’s a large part of me that knows that messing with Mother Nature is never the best way to go. But the rest of me can’t go through autumn without a bright day of good old-fashioned leaf fun. And so starts the annual progression. It starts with rakes of many sizes for all sizes of children involved. (And yes, I include myself in that category.) After only a few minutes, someone has tired arms and someone else wants some apple cider. Pressing on, there are intermittent leaf fights and any small piles we may have formed are destroyed by the dog. By this time, it’s lunch, and we all eat steamy soup on the back porch. And while we eat, we hear the roar of the leaf blower starting up, meaning that dad has had just about enough of our
autumnal shenanigans, and before we know it, there’s a huge pile of leaves waiting for the “one, two, three ... jump!” But when it comes to leaf blowing, anything goes. Anything, and everything. Every small toy that was hiding under cover. Every small stick with the point as sharp as a needle. Every bit of physical evidence in the yard that we own a dog. It’s all whirled up in the tornado of beautiful, inviting leaves and piled and ready for you to jump in, too. The safe side of you knows that diving headfirst isn’t the smartest thing, that there’s a good chance that you’ll get poked by a stick or nosedive into something rather stinky. You could whack your head on a missing yard tool, and there’s a 100 percent chance that leaf litter will stick in your socks and hair and everywhere else. But the rest of you ignores all of that and before you know it there’s less “pile” and more “kid” and less “worry” and more “smile” and you realize that life is like a pile of leaves. You never know what you’re going to hit. But you jump anyway.
therapies than a specialist pharmacist.” Because of their thorough knowledge of the medications used to treat specific conditions and their access to a patient’s pharmacy records, specialist pharmacists can identify when patients have been prescribed drugs that could cause potentially harmful interactions if used together or when patients are not taking their medications regularly. “A specialist pharmacist at Express Scripts realized that three different doctors had prescribed different types of the same drug to a cancer patient,” says Reyes. “While the medication was necessary for this patient, in high doses it could be deadly. Sports Nelson’s reign ends at hands of friend; senior places third
Two of my favorites in one week I have covered a lot of kids over the past 20+ years covering sports, but few have been as pleasurable to write stories about as West Holmes senior Rachel Nelson has been. Here is a kid who, win or lose, was patient with the dumb questions we reporters tend to ask, as well as thoughtful and insightful with some of her answers. Granted, Nelson didn’t lose very often during her four-year career, earning All-Ohio status each season. She placed fourth at state her freshman year in doubles when she teamed up with her sister, Mary. Then, her sophomore season she finished second to defending champ Alyssa Ritchie. She followed that up by winning it all her junior year, knocking off her frequent foe from Lexington, Courtney Earnest. This year Nelson finished third, getting knocked out in the semifinals by her friend and weekend practice partner My Linh Li of Columbus St. Francis DeSales. When Nelson lost, she gave her friend a big hug at the net and wished her well. Both players talked about being friends off the
court, but once they get between the lines, no holds are barred. Li and her sister Kim My Li teamed up to win the state champions when My Linh was a freshman. Li finished third last year (thanks to Nelson) and then placed second this year. West Holmes coach Jason Otto talked about how lucky he has been as a coach to have a player like Rachel. Some players of Nelson’s caliber opt not to play for their school team, choosing instead to play in national USTA tournaments throughout the year. Rachel does both, but concentrates on playing for the school during the fall tennis season. She is a great teammate, as was evidenced by the fact that her teammates from this year as well as last year made the trip to Columbus to cheer her on at state. Even though she didn’t win it all this season, See Pg. 23 — FAVORITES

How successful is the Alabama football program? In 2005-06, the year before coach Nick Saban’s arrival, the program brought in $44.4 million and spent $16.7 million for a net of $27.7. In 201011, the school spent $31.6 but earned $76.8 million, a $45.2 million net. That success was matched on the field. In 2012, the defending national champions are looking to become the first team since Nebraska in the mid-1990s to win three crowns in four years. What’s more, in 2011 the Crimson Tide became the first team in 25 years to lead the nation in all four major defensive categories - fewest yards rushing, fewest yards passing, fewest total yards and fewest points allowed. Here’s an odd hitting highlight. Late in the 2012 season, slugger Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers became just the second player in major league history to hit three home runs and hit for the cycle (single, double triple and home run in one game) in the same week. The only other player ever to do so - Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio in 1948. Many fans know that the New York Yankees were the first sports team to put numbers on their uniforms, in 1929. Ironically, they are now the only major league team not to put the last names of the players on their backs. The first sports team ever to sew names on their jerseys? The Chicago White Sox in 1960, the brainchild of promotional mastermind and team owner Bill Veeck. By the way, the Penn State football team finally decided to use names in 2012, leaving the USC Trojans as the only FBS school without them.
By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer Rachel Nelson’s reign as queen of the courts in Div. II tennis was ended on Saturday, as Columbus DeSales senior My Linh Li knocked off Nelson 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinal match of the 37th annual Girls State Tennis Tournament, moved indoors to the Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City. Li, however, was unable to claim the crown for herself, as she fell 6-0, 6-2 to Bishop Hartley senior Rachel Morales in the championship match. “I’ve known both of them since I was 11,” Nelson said. “We all three hit together on Sundays. The three people who practice together took first, second and third.” Nelson bounced back later in the day to topple Allie Miller of Portsmouth 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to take third, ending her brilliant career at West Holmes with a first-, a second-, a third- and a fourth-place finish. “I got them all, but that wasn’t my goal,” Nelson said with a laugh. Heading into the finals, Nelson was more focused than she was earlier in the day. And she played with purpose. “It didn’t really matter who I was playing, I didn’t want to lose two today,” Nelson said. “I pulled it
out. That’s good.” West Holmes coach Jason Otto was pleased with her ability to come back and take third. “She came out of here winning,” Otto said. “That’s kind of nice. She beat one of her rivals in the final match of her (high school) career.” The move inside was beneficial to Nelson. “I play better indoors because most of the year, I’m playing indoors.” Nelson said. “And so are most of these girls here. Plus, the better my opponent, the better I play. She’s a really good opponent. She hits it really hard, and that pushes me to play better.” Nelson was able to defeat the hard-hitting Miller despite a woeful day at the service line, where she had 10 double faults. “Everyone has an off day or an off set, or an off game,” she said. “It just depends; your level fluctuates and you have no control over it. It was a little rough with the serve today, but, other than that, I thought I really played well.” The first set against Miller was a back-and forth battle that wound up going Nelson’s way in a tiebreaker. Perone, defense lead Knights past Generals By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer A record-setting night by bruising West Holmes running back Layne Perone helped the Knights overcome some early mistakes and throttle the visiting Wooster Generals 43-0 in a driving rain Friday at Knights Stadium. Perone rushed for 253 yards on 21 carries including a pair of touchdown runs, the second tying the school record for touchdowns in a season at 23, set by Nolan Mackey in 2000, the last time West Holmes was playoff bound. The junior also set the
single-season record for points, surpassing Mackey’s total of 144 with 148. “He’s a tremendous back who can hit it up in there,” said West Holmes coach Kevin Maltarich. “He breaks tackles left and right, and he’s got a good burst of speed. Layne’s pretty good when he’s healthy. “The thing is, this team does a good job of playing for each other,” the coach continued. “The line did a great job of opening some holes and we were able to exploit them.” The Knights churned out 439 yards on the ground on 53 attempts,
powered by Perone, along with Garrett Mackey (9 carries, 37 yards), Grant Hay (3/29), Luke Ogi (12/55) and Clay Stutzman (2/53). The Knights fumbled away two of their first three possessions before settling into their powerful ground game and running over the Generals. The teams slogged through a scoreless first quarter. West Holmes fumbled on its second possession but Wooster was unable to get its offense on track either, letting a golden opportunity slip through its hands. On the first play after
Wooster’s Grant Stokes recovered a Perone fumble, Cam Daugherty hit a streaking Darrian Owens down the sidelines, but the receiver was unable to hang on to the slick pigskin. The Knights dodged another bullet after losing their second fumble, but the defense stiffened and forced a punt. Brady Arnold returned the ball to the 35, from where West Holmes marched 65 yards in 14 plays. Perone powered it in from the 2 for a 6-0 lead one minute into the second quarter. See Pg. 23 — PERONE

West Holmes running back Layne Perone (24) follows the blocks of his linemen for a big gain Friday against Wooster. Perone tied the school record for touchdowns in a season with 23 and established a new mark for points with 148 on the season during the Knights’ 43-0 romp over Wooster. gave Wooster the ball at the Knights’ 25, but again the West Holmes defense stiffened, taking over on downs and then ran out the clock. It was the Knights’ eighth win in nine games (5-1 Ohio Cardinal Conference). Wooster dipped to 2-7, 1-5 in the OCC. “There was twice they had first-and-goal and we shut the door on them,” Maltarich said. “That was good to see.
As we get into this thing down here, we need to play good defense. That’s something they say wins championships We’ve got to start playing some good defense.” Maltarich praised the defense again for keeping the game scoreless after the Knights’ early turnover woes. “We didn’t do a good job on offense early, but the defense held them,” Maltarich said. “Those

You can’t be too passive,” she added. “Everyone makes that mistake thinking they just need to be consistent. You have to play your game, the way you’ve been winning. You don’t want to play just to keep it in.” Miller wasn’t flawless, either, double-faulting on eight serves. But Nelson’s solid ground strokes broke Miller. “She played much better in this match than she did in the first match (against Li),” Otto said. “She didn’t play as well as she did last week against Miller, but she played well enough to win.” Nelson didn’t have her best game in Saturday’s
are some things we’ve got to (clean up) down the stretch here. We can’t turn the ball over.” Wooster was limited to 136 total yards on the game, including 36 through the air. Daugherty managed to complete only 6-of-19 passes with an interception. “Field conditions were hard. That made it a challenge. But you’ve got to credit their
defense. They ran to the ball well,” Haas said. “They were able to take away some of our short passing game. It was not going to be a crisp throwing night tonight.” Conversely, Snyder hit 2-of-3 passes for 20 yards and a touchdown toss. “I was concerned. We want good footing. The rain is kind of an equalizer, but we prefer playing on a good, solid surface,” Maltarich said.
Favorites semifinal match against her friend Li. “What it comes down to it, it was just another match. I lost to a friend of mine, so that’s all good,” Nelson said. Li is a defensive player who kept the balls in play and forced Nelson into an extra shot, and several unforced errors. “She played really well. She forced me to try and switch it up, because she was playing so well,” Nelson said. There were some long rallies that seemed to wear Nelson down. “There were a couple key points in the match. Down 2-3 in the first set, My Linh didn’t let up or lose her focus,” DeSales coach Anthony Tienprasid said. “In the second set, My Linh was also down 3-4, and down 15-40, but came back to win that game. That was a big momentum swing. Keeping her composure and being aggressive throughout the entire match was the key to the victory.
“We wanted to move her (Nelson) around and make her work for every single point,” Tienprasid added. “Last year, My LInh was feeding Rachel and she just pounded her. This year, she made Rachel run around the court and it seemed like Rachel was tiring out. That came through in those long rallies.” Li admits it was strange playing against her friend on the big stage, but it wasn’t the first time, and she knew what to do. “I’ve known Rachel for a long time,” Li said. “It’s weird playing against friends, but once you get on the court, you have to see them as another player. After the match, we’re friends again, but you’ve got to leave it all out there on the court.” The West Holmes coach was sad to see his star end her high school career. “I always tell her, I feel like I lucked out, because not many people get to
coach a quality player like her,” Otto said. “Most of the top quality players are kind of snobs. She’s one of the rare ones. I commend her for playing all four years and being a good teammate.” Nelson said that while some people saw this as her last match, she knows she has four more years of playing at the college level ahead of her. Her opponents are the fondest memory of the state tournament for Nelson. “The people I played here; last year was awesome and this year, whenever I play her (Allie Miller), it’s always a battle,” she said. “My freshman year was exciting because I was in doubles with my sister. My sophomore year when I played Courtney (Earnest) in the semis, I was really up for that. “The competition and the feel, the atmosphere is different here,” she continued. “It’s different from any other tournament I’ve played.”
