Community Today’s idiot culture result of too much tolerance “We are in the process of creating what deserves to be called the idiot culture. Not an idiot sub-culture, which every society has ... bubbling beneath the surface and which can provide harmless fun; but the culture itself. For the first time, the weird and the stupid and the coarse are becoming our cultural norm, even our cultural ideal.” — Carl Bernstein. I have to strongly agree, except with the “in the process of” part. I think we’ve already created a HUGE idiot culture. I’m really sick and tired of picking up the newspaper or turning on the TV every week and seeing that some idiot has done something out-
rageous to harm others and gain attention for himself. We like to blame parents in this culture, and parents ARE often to blame, but I think we have to look at our culture at large, too. We’ve developed a tolerance for asinine and idiotic behavior and have, in fact, tied the hands of parents and authority figures. We’ve grown tolerant of teens backtalking their teachers, their parents, the police, or any
other authority figure or adult. This would not have been tolerated 50 years ago, so why do we tolerate it now? I don’t think it’s an accident that the 20-somethings are now wreaking havoc in our culture, killing our children as they sit in schools, damaging the property of others in the name of “fun,” or using language that 30 years ago would have made a sailor blush. This is the generation that was told, from birth, “no one is more important than you; you are the most important person in the world.” Then we shake our heads, bury our children, and wonder why these ying-yangs have no compassion for anyone else.
As parents we were told we should “reason” with our children and not tell them they’re “wrong,” that we shouldn’t paddle them or scold them because their fragile little egos wouldn’t be able to take it. And we are paying the price now, aren’t we? Of course our children can’t sit down, shut up, and learn what they’re supposed to. They’ve never had to sit down and behave. Of course our young adults are egotistical and think they have a right to go shoot up places because they’re angry or upset; we’ve told them there’s no one more important than they. Of course, our young adults have

item, chocolate whoopie pies covered in chocolate. “They are amazing,” said Schlabach appreciatively. In the week before Christmas, Schlabach baked nearly 2,000 cut-out cookies for holiday tables. Peaceful Acres Bakery also takes special cupcake orders. “Just in the past month, I’ve made 500 cupcakes,” said Schlabach. The cupcakes are iced
in swirls of frosting and filled with the same made-from-scratch filling as the cream sticks. Schlabach learned the art of baking from her mother. “I’m following in my mom’s footsteps,” she said. “She used to bake for a store, very small amounts compared to what we do, and ran a restaurant for awhile. I definitely learned to bake from my mom.” The bakery will begin

More relief for the overworked rotator cuff This is part two of a series of columns about the muscles of the rotator cuff. In my last column, I told you about the infraspinatus, one of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff of the shoulder. One of that muscle’s partners is called the supraspinatus, and it can be super painful when injured or overworked. Read on to discover how it might also lead to bad breath. (Now there’s a mystery.) “Supra” is in this muscle’s name because it lies in a groove on the top of the shoulder blade, “superior” to or above a bony ridge.
The supraspinatus is a somewhat small muscle, and it plays a role in abducting the arm, or lifting the arm straight up from your side. When it becomes compromised, people often have trouble lifting the arm above shoulderlevel. Another giveaway that supraspinatus is involved is pain that occurs when reaching behind your back, as in reaching toward
your opposite-side back pocket. This muscle often develops trigger points that can send odd pain patterns to distant areas, and sometimes mimic bursitis. As a reminder: a trigger point is a knotty, sensitive point within a tight band of muscle, or even connective tissue. When this point is pressed or palpated, it can refer sensation and pain. Trigger points lurking in the supraspinatus can create a sense of discomfort or deep aching in the side of the upper arm. This can be deceptive for the person in pain, because he or she may assume that the root
of the problem lies in the painful upper arm, but it is actually coming from the supraspinatus. (Ahhah — more mystery!) One way people become aware of a problem in the supraspinatus on their dominant-side is if they begin to notice difficulty with daily activities like brushing their hair, or playing sports like racquetball or tennis. The issue can progress unnoticed for longer if it happens on the person’s non-dominant side because that arm is not used as much for routine activities. Sometimes, trigger points in the supraspinatus can be setoff or activated by carry-
ing a heavy load with the arm hanging down, or even walking a large dog on a leash. Both vapocoolant spray (a liquid treatment that a therapist sprays in a stream along the length of the problematic muscle) and neuromuscular massage therapy are highly effective at releasing and resolving trigger points in this muscle. I see this proven quite regularly. Still wondering about how supraspinatus could cause bad breath? Well, once trigger points have been extinguished and a normal resting tone has been achieved from treatments, the injured
person can more easily walk the dog, brush his hair, and, yes (mystery solved), brush his teeth. Thanks for reading. I hope you and your supraspinatus are well today.

Cyber-granny ready to peruse profiles of progeny The message was clear and the directive straight-forward when I posted this on my own Facebook wall: “Attention wonderful world of Lorsons: Finally succumbing to Grandma Bunny’s burning desire to keep track of all of you through what she calls, ‘that Facebook thing,’ I have just ordered her a laptop. When it arrives, I will be helping her set up an account and each and every one of you will receive a “friend request.” You’ve got three to five days to clean up your profiles! Consider yourselves warned!” I imagined my entire battalion of nieces and nephews, many of them college-aged or just beyond, immediately scrambling toward their Facebook accounts to rifle through their online photo albums, double-check privacy settings, and hurry to hide any and all pictures, posts or comments that might even remotely offend the sensibilities of our 85-year-old matriarch. In issuing this warning I felt that I had done a great service to my kin on both ends of the age spectrum. The only
problem was, none of the kids believed me! I learned this a few days after the decree when I happened upon Ben as he lounged on the couch thumbing his smartphone. “So, son, have you dressed up your Facebook wall for Grandma yet?” I said. “Duh!” he said without even looking up. “As if Grandma would ever get a computer, much less a Facebook account. That’s pretty funny!” “News flash!” I said covering his phone with my hand. “It’s no joke! By the end of the week I will have endowed your beloved little granny with the power to rifle through your recent history, get acquainted with all of your sketchy friends and more or less track your every documented activity!” “That’s just plain TERRIFYING!” he said leaping from the couch to race to his computer. “I’m about
to block my entire existence!” Half-way up the stairs he slammed to a stop with an idea so bright I swear I saw tiny rays of light emanating from his ear holes. “Just because Grandma sends me a friend request that doesn’t mean I have to accept it, right?” I pondered this for a moment. The boy was fundamentally correct. The way Facebook works is that people actually “ask” one another to share their little Internet world; and for every request there must be a response. In Ben’s case, to flat-out deny a friend request from someone who used to wipe his nose and powder his behind would be a pretty firm smack in the face. But to simply ignore the request? Well, he could probably get away with that for a good, long time! “OK, son, suit yourself; but I think if I were you I’d clean up my profile anyhow. Be on the lookout for “Things of Beauty’ By BARB LUMLEY Columnist The first day of winter arrived Dec. 21. The days are cloudy, dreary, sometimes rainy and just plain miserable! By five o’clock in the evening it is getting dark. Flowers are gone, the trees are bare, fields and the countryside are various shades of brown. Christmas has come and gone, the lights have been turned off, and most decorations taken down. Things look ugly, the color is gone. You have heard the expression “a thing of beauty.” Each of the
following definitions is given in the dictionary. Thing — any object or substance, implement or equipment for some specified use. Beauty — an attractive or advantageous characteristic or feature. Where are the “things of beauty” at this time of year? As we drive down our country roads all we see are the dark brown fields. Those fields are a “thing of beauty.” Some are plowed, some are not, but they are all at rest, just waiting for spring when they will receive the seeds and fertilizer that will let them produce their
crops that will help to feed the country. We see a row of bales wrapped in white plastic. They really show up as they lie on the brown background. Those bales are a “thing of beauty.” They are providing the high quality forage that feeds the farmer’s dairy cows, so that they can produce the milk that awaits families on the market shelves. Farther on we see a huge pile of wood all neatly stacked. That stack of wood is a “thing of beauty.” It will provide warmth and comfort for a family during the snowy and freezing cold days of winter.
When roads are covered with several inches of snow and you need to go somewhere, a snow plow becomes a “thing of beauty.” That plow on an ODOT or county truck means roads will be cleared so you can reach your destination. And you know the drivers will be working night and day plowing and spreading salt to make it as safe as possible for you to travel. A snowplow on a tractor means the milkman will be getting to the dairy barn to empty the bulk tank and a neighbor’s lane or driveway
will get plowed out. The pine tree along the road or in the forest is a “thing of beauty.” It will remain green for us all winter long, giving us a little bit of color throughout the winter and providing shelter, nests, and beds of pine needles for the birds and wild animals to help them survive the harsh winter. That beautiful bright red cardinal that just landed on the limb of the maple tree in the backyard is a “thing of beauty.” He is a tiny bright spot on a dark and dreary day to remind you that
there is always beauty in the world. Children playing in the snow, building a snowman, or sled riding down a hill are a “thing of beauty.” A full moon shining on drifts of new fallen snow is a “thing of beauty.” The flag of the United States of America waving in the breeze is always a “thing of beauty.” “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Finding “things of beauty” during this darkest time of year can be difficult, but they are there. Sometimes you just have to look a little deeper to find them!

McKee reappointed Holmes auditor The Holmes County Republican Central Committee met Tuesday, Dec. 18, and reappointed Jackie McKee as county auditor for the remainder of the term to which she was elected, which expires March 15, 2015. McKee had resigned as auditor November 30 to claim retirement under the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System, and had applied to the Central Committee to be

Obituaries Janice Crowthers, 71 Janice G. (Stone) Crowthers, 71, of South Lawn Extension, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at her residence. She was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Coshocton County to the late William George and Cecelia Nellie (Hamer) Stone, and was an employee of the Rice-Chadwick Co. for more than 35 years. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Surviving are a daughter, June Conley of Coshocton; sons, William Conley, Larry (Naomi) Crowthers, Gary Crowthers, and Robert Crowthers, all of Tampa, Fla., Jason (Aimee) Crowthers of Glenmont and George Crowthers of Coshocton; several grand-
children and great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Sampsel and Joan (Art) Jones, both of Layland; a sister-in-law, Helen Stone of Coshocton; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Francis, George and Fred Stone; and sisters, Eileen Crawford, Minnie Stone, Ruth Dishman and Mary Lou Dunmire. Funeral services were Saturday Dec. 15 at Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw, with pastor Ron Davis officiating. Burial was in Spring Mountain Cemetery. Liberty shuts down Arnold, hands West Holmes its first loss By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer After seeing what Brady Arnold could do against his squad in the first half, Liberty coach Greg Nossaman decided he was going to make someone other than the dynamic junior of West Holmes beat his Patriots. Arnold torched Liberty for 19 points in the first half, helping the Knights build a 45-43 lead. But a box-and-one defense limited Arnold to four points the rest of the way, and Liberty handed the Knights their first loss of the season, 72-63 in the fourth game of the WQKT-Steve Smith Holiday Hoops Classic at Timken Gymnasium Saturday at The College of Wooster. “That was the biggest thing we talked about. If they want to do that, then someone else is going to have to go get his (points),” West Holmes coach Jim Lindeman said. “We just didn’t step up like we have. After a Liberty timeout, the Patriots turned the ball over and Arnold hit a jumper to trim the lead to 22-18. That’s where the score stood after the opening eight minutes of action. West Holmes went on an 11-2 run to start the second quarter, opening a five-point lead as the Patriots had no answer
for Gabe Snyder inside. Snyder had nine of his 11 points in the first half, seven of them coming in a span of five possessions. Arnold and Liberty senior guard Nick Nossaman put on a shooting display for a stretch of the second quarter, where Arnold started with a spinning layup in the lane to give the Knights a 36-31 lead. The junior sharpshooter then hit a 3-pointer, one of six he drilled in the first half. And he was fouled, for a four-point play, giving the Knights a 40-34 lead. Nossaman answered at the other end with a triple from just inside the half-court line. Arnold came back, buried another deep one, only to have Nossaman answer with another prorange triple. When the smoke cleared at the end of the first half, West Holmes led 45-42. Layne Perone came off the West Holmes bench to provide an offensive spark in the third quarter when Snyder was saddled with foul trouble. He scored four points on back-to-back possessions to give the Knights a 54-48 advantage late in the third quarter. “I think that’s a testament to Layne. He’s still getting into basketball mode.
