Community Appreciate unique, individual talents “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, then it will live its entire life believing it is stupid.” — Albert Einstein. I’m pretty smart. At least I’m book smart. Well, OK I’m book smart about certain things. Give me literature, instructions, documents to explain and I can do it all day. Give me a math book to work with or explain and you’re going to see a grown woman cry. My son-in-law is not the “reader” I am. Some might, erroneously, say that he’s not as “smart” as I am. But let’s say you put him alone on a deserted island and put me alone on a deserted island right next to his. One of us is gonna die … and it won’t be him. This college-educated, booksmart mama will be

worm food within a day or two. My son-in-law would know immediately how to survive. He’d find a way to get shelter, water, food, then devise a way to signal for help even without phone service. I, on the other hand, would just keep checking my cell phone to see if I had any service YET. I might read my Kindle app until the battery died, then I’d lay down and cry till the vultures carried me away. So, while I may be “smarter” than my son-in-law as far as books are concerned, he’s a smarter survivalist than I am and would likely live to tell his tale while my sad story

would (maybe) be found scratched into the sand. Yet we have a tendency, in our culture, to want everyone to be the same. I get irritated every time I see a report on how America’s educational scores are so much lower than in, say, China or Japan. Our scores are often lower than many countries, but there are many reasons for this. For one, we may not be as strict as other countries. But, the main reason our scores are often lower is because we educate EVERYONE. Other countries don’t do that. Germany, for example, tracks its students according to particular areas of proficiency. If you’re artistically inclined, you go to an art institute. If you’re career oriented, you go to a vocational school. If you’re academically inclined, you’re put on

the college track. But here, “tracking” is a dirty word. Rather than gearing people toward their strengths, our state legislators seem to think we all have equal talents and proclivities in all areas and forces our educational systems to treat individuals as if they’re all the same. Not true, even among the collegeeducated crowd. Personally, I’m glad we all have unique talents. My husband has no college degree, but is married to someone who has three. But, he makes medical parts. I can explicate a poem or story for you. But if you’re in an accident or terribly ill, which of our skills are you most interested in?! Instead of trying to put everyone in some cookiecutter mold, I think we’d better serve ourselves by celebrating our unique, individual talents.

The scent of freshly baked bread is a delicious aroma. We associate love and satisfaction with that wonderful smell. It brings to mind a cozy kitchen or special bakery. In John 6:35, our Lord says, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall not hunger.” We attempt to satisfy our appetite for happiness with possessions and position and are left wondering why we still feel empty. We don’t have to go far to be filled…only to the doors of our house of worship. Come to God as you came into that cozy kitchen as a child…expecting something wonderful. Luke 3:1–22

A magnificent migration to relative warmth A lone figure rolled up on one of those fourwheeled utility vehicles bundled from head to toe. Boots, gloves and a lamination of sweatshirts, hoodies and jackets so thick he could barely squeeze from behind the steering wheel, he stood for a moment after disembarking to pound his numbed-out mitts together like a fighter prepping for another round. I saw him tilt his head back as if to blow a puff of frost into the air. Seemingly disappointed, he shook his head,

grabbed a near-empty trash can and quickly dumped it into his cart. Before heading back off into the wind he, cinched the drawstring of his outermost hoodie, tugged on the cuffs of his gloves and stomped his feet forcefully in an apparent effort to

Back at home in Ohio, a mere 15-hour drive behind us, folks were waking up to 17 degrees and thinking about wearing sneakers instead of flip-flops only because the snow would get stuck between their toes. “Chilly” may be one of the most relative terms in the entire American vernacular. Observing the suffering below as I stood barefoot on the balcony of my Daytona Beach hotel room in a “Life’s A Beach” T-shirt and cargo shorts, I put down my morning coffee to say a prayer for this man. I prayed he would never have to face temperatures deeper than what one local radio announcer had dubbed “the sub-Siberian chill” that gripped Daytona Beach on that crisp winter morning. Maine — if we passed 10 cars, odds were good that they’d be from 10 states. The Great White North was well represented, too, as at more than one point on this journey we were entirely surrounded by cars from the province of Quebec. This led us to hypothesize that Canadians travel in flocks. While once we arrived in Daytona it became impossible to tell one’s home state at a glance, it was fairly simple to accurately deduce any individual’s latitude of origin from the amount of clothing he or she was wearing. The Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York crowd wore shorts, sneakers and hoodies. New Englanders tended toward T-shirts and sandals to complement their shorts. The folks from Maine shucked footwear altogether and were frequently seen shirtless. Locals, of course, were bundled from head to toe. And travelers from Quebec? Straight-up naked! (I’ll have more tales of my family’s magnificent migration next week. Hope to see you then!)

First Holmes 2013 baby takes its time arriving

Kelley Mohr photo/www.buydrphotos.com

Holmes County’s New Year’s Baby Jacob Yoder, born at Pomerene Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at 7:25 a.m., received celebratory gifts from the hospital and other local businesses.

By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer Holmes County waited more than a day for its first baby of the new year. The county’s official New Year’s baby was welcomed into the world not on New Year’s Day, but more than 31 hours into 2013. “Our first baby was born (Wednesday), a little boy named Jacob,” said communications coordinator at Pomerene Hospital, Connie Weaver on Thursday. “Jacob was actually due Jan. 6, but they did a Cesarian section yesterday.” Born to Holmes County residents Leon and Sarah A. Yoder

of Fredericksburg — members of the area’s Amish community — a son, Jacob Yoder, arrived at Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg on Wednesday at 7:25 a.m. The area’s New Year’s baby weighed in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 21 inches long.

e

The family of Pomerene Hospital’s New Ye a r ’s B a b y 2 0 1 3 received a variety of baby items from the hospital and other area businesses to mark the occasion. The hospital had no babies born Tuesday. For the new year, Kellyn was listed as the hot

baby name for a girl at Pomerene Hospital, while Brant, Haden and Lynn are popular boy names, according to the Pomerene website. Reporter Kelley Mohr can be reached at 330674-5676 or kmohr@ the-daily-record.com.

Fredericksburg Connections with coffee, coffee all year long It is no big secret that I am a coffee lover. Ever since that fateful day in 11th grade when I needed to stay up late for a project and my mother quietly handed me a cup, I have been completely hooked. I find its taste remarkable, and it’s effects magnificent. Even more than the physical effects (think: ZING!) is the way that something as simple as a cup of coffee can bring people together. While I admit that most of my coffee consumption is done in a hurried fashion, there are rare and beautiful times when I do get to just

sit. And sip. And enjoy. But like heads, when enjoying coffee two are better than one. The social interactions that take place over a cup are what make it great, as if some mystical powers of truth and connection are grown into each bean, only to be released as it fills a ceramic mug. Coffee brings people together, be it neighbors, family, friends, collected school supplies for Holmesville Elementary School, when they met Jan. 3 at Holmesville

or even acquaintances. I have specific memories of coffee warming my belly and my heart in my own life, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. When my husband and I were dating, we frequently stopped at the nearest gas station for 20 ounces of power for our long trips. My grandparents have made the same brand of coffee their whole lives, using the sawme awmount of scoops, and I think the same mugs. Even a smell of that stuff whisks me away to playing cards on the flowered tablecloth. I can only hope to creLibrary. They also discussed a couple of other donations. ate new memories with my kids someday, when they grow out of the “ew it’s so gross mom how can you drink it?” stage which I’ll never understand because they’ve been living with it their entire lives. But while I wait for that day, I have decided to come up with a new plan to create connections over a cup of coffee. You might even go as far as to call it a resolution for the year, albeit a little late in the game. Each month this year, I am vowing to meet someone for a cup of coffee. Or tea or hot chocolate, if that’s how they’re going to play it. And when

Defense comes to the rescue in Hiland’s victory By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer Hiland’s shooters didn’t have their finest touch, but the defense of the Hawks picked up the slack and helped the visitors to a 53-42 triumph over Tri-Valley Monday in the Dawg Pound. “On a night when we didn’t look stellar offensively, with 10 first-half turnovers and that sort of thing, I thought defensively we made enough plays to win the game,” Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said. Tri-Valley took advantage of Hiland’s cold shooting (3-of-8 shooting) and careless ballhandling (four turnovers) early, opening a 13-10 lead after the first quarter. Katie Prince, a 5-foot10 senior forward for the Scotties, proved to be a problem inside, scoring six of her team-high 15 points in the first quarter. “Prince was a really tough matchup for us. We ran four different people at her in the second half,” Schlabach said. “Rachel Horn and Tasha (Goings), and Natalie (Nichol) and Regina all took turns on her. That helped slow her down some.” In the second quarter, the Hawks held Tri-Valley to two field goals, and got aggressive going to the basket.

Jasmine Goings (eight points) got the second quarter started with a 3-point play to tie the game at 13. A 3-pointer by Emily Yoder gave the Hawks an 18-15 lead, and the visitors never looked back, making good on 6-of-7 trips to the free throw line in the second quarter and building a 27-19 lead at intermission. The Scotties scored on their first two trips down the floor in the third stanza to trim the Hiland lead to three, 27-24. That’s when Hochstetler got defensive, making three consecutive steals and converting those turnovers into eight straight Hiland points, making beautiful passes to Megan Beachy, who led the Hawks with 15 points, eight of those coming in the third quarter. “Regina didn’t score for us (7 points), but we had some other kids step up,” Schlabach said. “Megan Beachy is turning into that second scorer for us. Jasmine had a nice game and Natalie Nichol is finally starting to play like she was in the summer for us. One luxury of depth is, on certain nights, you can pull different pieces of the puzzle off the bench.” The Hawks opened up a 12-point lead and

SPORTS FANS! Playing center in the NFL is largely a thankless, anonymous job. But if you’ve got to do it, you might as well be Jeff Saturday. After 12 years of snapping to the legendary Peyton Manning in Indianapolis, Saturday endured only one season - 2011 - with collection of no-names at quarterback before signing as a free agent with Green Bay, where he had another all-time great to work with in Aaron Rodgers. But it was Saturday and Manning who made 170 starts together to set the NFL record for center-QB pair. For most people, the length of a persons outstretched arms, fingertips to fingertips (wingspan) is nearly identical to that persons height, Little surprise that that’s not the case in the NBA , where an average player who stands 6’7” sports a wingspan of seven feet. As of the start of the 2011-12 season, the only player with a wingspan shorter than his height was Orlando guard J.J. Redick. By the way, it’s estimated that of all the men in America ages 20 - 40 who stand seven feet tall, 17% are playing in the NBA. You could argue that the most significant change in the NFL over the last 40 years has been in field goals. In the early 1970’s, NFL kickers were converting less than 60% of their attempts, and less than 24% from beyond 50 years. Today, more than 87% of field goal attempt are successful, including more than 66% from at least 50 yards away. The increase is attributed to the change in style from a the straight-on toe kick to the instep soccer kick. The last straight-on kicker - Mark Mosely, who retired in 1986.

Hiland’s Alex Troyer drives and gets off a shot against Tri-Valley on Monday night in Dresden. Troyer was one of 12 players who got in on the action againt the Scotties. Hiland beat Tri-Valley 53-42. the Scotties were never able to get it any closer than 10, despite a couple 3-pointers from junior Alicia Moore, who provided some pop off the bench for Tri-Valley (4-7). “That’s been our problem all year. We’re trying to find consistency in our game,” Tri-Valley coach Marty Bice said. “Turnovers… we got it down to three and then all of a sudden we had two or three turnovers and Hiland took advantage of that. Hiland has a very nice program and it’s great to bring them in here and compete and try and get better. “I thought our kids fought well and played strong defensively,” Bice added. “They got after us and we got a little tired on the offensive boards. That really hurt us at the end of the first half and then again down the stretch.” The Hawks utilized their deep bench, playing a dozen different girls, getting 10 into the scorebook. Beachy was the lone Hiland player in double figures. “Tri-Valley’s half-court defense was tough,” Schlabach said. “That’s probably as good a defense as we’ve seen all year. They really do a nice job of taking stuff away. It’s nice to get a non-league win against a quality opponent like TriValley.” The win improved Hiland’s record to 9-2.

In my job as a sports writer for The Daily Record, Holmes County Hub and Shopper, I get to see plenty of great athletes in action. And I’m not just talking about the kids from Holmes County, of which there are plenty donning the Red, White and Blue of the Knights and the Red and Black worn by the Hiland Hawks. Brady Arnold, Laina Snyder, Max Rohskopf and other West Holmes Knights have treated me to some wonderful sports memories over recent years, while the Schlabach boys, Mark and Dave, have demonstrated unparalleled success as coaches on the sidelines at Hiland. It was while watching the locals in action recently that I got to enjoy some seriously gifted kids, not only on the hardwoods, but on the wrestling mats as well. And they weren’t from Holmes County! The First Federal Holiday Showcase at Hiland High School on Friday, Dec. 28, featured a matchup of two reigning state champions in the Hawks and the Dunbar Wolverines. The Hawks are a mere shell of the team that won back-to-back Div. IV titles, but one of the catalysts of that success, Dylan Kaufman, was home from Findlay for a presentation ceremony in which he received his state championship ring and had his No. 53 retired. Kaufman was one of the greatest athletes I’ve had the pleasure of seeing play during my

23-plus years as a sports writer. He graduated as the all-time leading scorer, leader in assists and rebounds, as well as turned in All-Ohio efforts on the pitch in goal for the Hiland soccer team and being one of the top hitters on the Hawks’ state Final Four baseball team last spring. After the presentation of the rings and jersey to Kaufman and Seger Bonifant (who weren’t available for the presentation to the rest of the team on Thursday prior to the Windham game), Hiland was dealt one of the worst defeats in recent memory, as the Wolverines overwhelmed the Hawks 67-38. Coach Peter Pullen’s team had two-fifths of its starting lineup from last year’s Div. II state champions. Sophomore point guard Amos Harris and 6-foot-8 senior post Damarion Geter accounted for 24 of the Woverines’ points. Geter had a couple dunks and displayed some great passing skills, which make him a highly coveted big man. This Dunbar team is as fast as any team I’ve ever seen. They put on a defensive display unlike any I’ve seen in a long time, taking advantage of Hiland’s inexperienced back court. They were truly a treat to watch. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wolverines aren’t back in Columbus come March defending their title. The next night, I got to see some of the finest wresters in the country, and I’m not just talking

about my brief visit with Colt Sponseller. St. Ed’s, from my hometown of Lakewood, proved to be as good as ever as it dominated the field at the 38th annual Medina Invitational Tournament. The Eagles have long been considered one of the greatest high school wrestling factories, ever since the 1970s when Howard Ferguson turned his home into a wrestling gym and built the St. Ed’s program into one of the finest in the country. One of the Eagles’ stars this year is a young man by the name of Edgar Bright, a 145-pound senior. Bright is one of the top wrestlers at his weight in the country and he handed Rohskopf his first loss of the season in the championship bout of the MIT. I jokingly asked the Knights coach Jeff Woods if he was glad he didn’t wrestle St. Ed’s on a regular basis, and Woods said he wishes he could. He said it is that kind of experience that makes his kids get better. There were some other impressive wrestling programs at MIT as well, including Massillon Perry, and a couple teams from Michigan, Richmond and Detroit Central Catholic. There are a lot of great games yet to be played this season, but it’s going to be hard to match the quality of great athletes I got to see over that one weekend.

Madison Kandel and family headed to national PP&K finals Madison Kandel won the State Punt, Pass & Kick competition Nov. 25 at the Cleveland Browns Training Facility in Berea in the 13-14 year-old girls division, and her total score put her in the top four in the country, earning her a spot in Saturday’s finals in Atlanta.

West Holmes Middle School seventh-grader Madison Kandel has qualified for the national championship of NFL Punt, Pass & Kick. She and her family will fly to Atlanta tomorrow to compete on Saturday and then attend the Falcons’ playoff game on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Kandel is the daughter Randy and Amber Kandel of Killbuck. Her brothers, Bo and Kody, and grandparents Bob and Doris Spurgeon, will also be making the trip. This past Monday, the American Legion in Millersburg hosted the Kandels to present her with a financial contribution for her trip and to congratulate her on her accomplishment.
