Community It’s only ‘luck’ if it’s somebody else “People will always call it luck when you’ve acted more sensibly than they have.” — Anne Tyler, from Celestial Navigation. We love to play games in our house. In fact, Christmas Eve in our house is traditionally “Family Game Night.” This tradition started when my kids were small and has now expanded to include my son-in-law, his sisters and brother-in-law, and whoever my son is dating at the time. Problem is, we’re all rather … shall we say… um … “Competitive.” What gets me, though, is that if my son or husband wins, it’s pure skill, but if I win, then I’m just “lucky.” Hmph!!! But that’s just a “game,” so we all just really laugh. The thing that actually angers me is when I hear lazy and unmotivated underachievers who put forth no effort in school, work, or relationships complain that others are more successful, have
had better “chances,” or just more “luck” than they’ve had. Though I acknowledge that some of us are born into tougher circumstances than others, every day I see or hear stories of those who have made it out of those tough circumstances to make something of their lives. And they didn’t “make” something of their lives by “making” excuses! I have come to believe, throughout my life, that people are about as successful as they choose to be. Yes, some may have greater hurdles to clear than others, and some may have obstacles to overcome. But what I have noticed is that those who really WANT to overcome those hurdles will, and those who want something without benefit
of effort on their part will spend a lifetime bemoaning their bad “luck.” When asked what they’ve done to improve their circumstances, they often have a very short list. I frequently am the target of people complaining about the “benefits” of my job — summers off (which rarely happens really because I spend my summer improving on my lesson plans, buying — out of my own pocket — new materials, taking classes, and so forth), holidays off throughout the year, “excessive” pay (HA!), working “only” 7 hour days, except of course for those 20 additional hours spent on grading papers, emailing parents on my own time, refining lessons and so forth. But when I say to them, “Here are my programs from both of the universities where I got my degrees, and here are my student loan bills … If you envy me so much, please, join our ranks. We need people like

TOPS OH 1243, Sugarcreek met Jan. 10 at the United Methodist Church in Sugarcreek with 14 members weighing in. Visitors Randy and Denise Garvin were welcomed. The chapter had a weight loss of 10 3/4 pounds for the week. Lovina Yoder was the best weight loss winner for the week. The thing to do is to have a food sheet for the week and the forbidden food was not to eat after supper. Mary Ann Jahn was also recognized for having lost weight over the
you,” they often say “Oh there’s no way I could do what you do!” Well, then, why are you criticizing? And it’s not just teachers who take this criticism. Our president takes it. Our police and firefighters. The checkout girl at the grocery store. Doctors and nurses. Somehow, it’s much easier to criticize those we envy than to admit we have defeated ourselves, that it’s our own fault we chose not to work as hard as others. When I see someone I envy, I stop and ask myself what they did differently from what I chose to do in my own life. Often, I find it’s my own lack of effort that put me where I am. Then, my envy quickly turns to admiration for their strength and determination. So, next time you find yourself lamenting that someone has it “better” than you, take it as an opportunity for selfevaluation and ask what steps you can take toward what you really want out of life.

Our Creator makes sure our canine friend’s coat grows even thicker than usual to protect him in a chilly habitat. A fur coat keeps him warm when he is out in the snow. What about us? Is it not soulwarming to have the assurance that God knows our needs? He will protect us and help us find a solution to any challenge if we let Him. hotels and the sparselypopulated beach had a lot less to do with last minute gifts and family commitments than it did water cold enough to make a porpoise blush! So while the Canadians made it into the water first, they didn’t stay in long enough to stake their claim. I would
characterize their collective dip as something akin to what a few of their more hardy, less well-traveled and desperately winter-bored countrymen would be doing a week hence: Cutting a big square hole in a frozen lake and taking a polar bear plunge. pale clusters, if liberated snow birds, breathing in the sea breeze and basking in temperatures we’d have to wait another five months for at home. It wasn’t a matter of if we’d be hitting the waves, it was merely a matter of when — and for how long. The Florida warmth was a bit deceiving that first afternoon. It was a magnificent 65 degrees upon our arrival and for all we knew it was summertime all year round there on the golden shore. What seemed a bit mysterious to all of us was that all along the seemingly endless stretch of beach only a tiny handful of folks were actually in the water. We assumed the locals were all caught up in the hustle and bustle of shopping in the last few days before Christmas and therefore too busy to swim, surf or lay about in the sun. I heaped this assumption upon the one I had made when I was able to book a room just days before our arrival at half the normal price: Everyone else in the world is headed to their mother-inlaw’s for the holidays so there’s a huge surplus of ocean-view hotel rooms available for folks like me who are fleeing such gatherings! Turns out the empty

The folks from Quebec hit the water first. It’s not that it was a race or anything; it’s just that I had seen them on the highway paralleling our southward pace, then later on the bridge crossing the Halifax River to Daytona Beach. A family similar in size and configuration to my own, it seemed obvious they had the same sort of holiday in mind. And it had appeared they may have been a bit more seasoned in the art of family travel than my entourage; they already had their sun hats and

Me? Well, I didn’t drive 16 hours to dip my toe in the water and run for my towel. I went in full body and waited out some tasty waves. This was the first time to the ocean for two of my three children and I wanted to make sure they got a full-on baptism. It didn’t take any coaxing at all once dad hooked up with a sweet little roller and rode it right to their feet! Within minutes the whole family was up to their ears in the brisk Atlantic and we didn’t stop until one of the kids noticed that my “old man hands” had turned from purple to dead flesh white. We retreated to our towels to shiver in a close huddle while the Quebecers stood in awe of the bravery (quite likely pronounced “stupidity” in French) of their American counterparts!

ORGANIC Organic valley CEO to keynote Ohio’s largest food, farming conference
a group of family farmers in Wisconsin to found the Cooperative Regions of Organic Producer Pools (CROPP). Long before there were national organic standards, these visionary founding farmers pledged to farm without antibiotics, synthetic hormones, pesticides, or genetically engineered inputs; to pasture animals; and to steward the environment. More commonly known by its brands Organic Valley and Organic Prairie, CROPP has grown to become the largest organic farming cooperative in North America with more than 1,800 organic farmer-owners in 35 states and three Canadian provinces, and 650 employees. Focused on its founding mission of saving family farms through organic farming, the cooperative sells milk, dairy products, meats and produce at supermarkets, natural food stores and food cooperatives nationwide. From the outset, Siemon was determined to prove

that a successful business need not sacrifice people or the environment for profits. Maintaining this commitment, Organic Valley’s farmer-owners pay themselves a stable, sustainable price, which is set by a farmer board of directors elected by the membership. The organic milk is produced, bottled and distributed in the region where it is farmed, to ensure fewer miles from farm to table and to support local economies. And, the company also works to expand organic production by helping farmers transition to organic and provides leadership training and mentorship to new farmers to help create the next generation of coop owner-farmers. Following this model, sales have grown and Organic Valley now provides about a third of
the nation’s organic milk supply. Siemon, who often describes Organic Valley as “a social experiment See Pg. 22 — ORGANIC

George Siemon, C-EI-E-I-O and a founding farmer of Organic Valley, will be the featured keynote speaker at the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association’s 34th annual conference, Growing Opportunities, Cultivating Change, on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Granville (Licking County). “As one of the nation’s foremost organic agriculture advocates for nearly two decades, Siemon and Organic Valley have developed a successful business model that rewards organic farmers, keeps families farming the land, protects the environment, invests in the future and meets the growing consumer demand for safe, transparently-produced food,” said Renee Hunt, OEFFA’s program director and the event’s lead organizer. Siemon will speak as part of the state’s largest sustainable food and farm conference, an event which draws more than 1,100 attendees from across Ohio and the Midwest, and has sold out in advance the past three years. In addition to Siemon, this year’s conference will feature keynote speaker Nicolette Hahn Niman on Sunday, Feb. 17; more than 90 educational workshops; two featured pre-conference events on Friday, Feb. 15; a trade show; a fun and educational kids’ conference and child care area; locally-sourced and organic homemade meals, and Saturday evening entertainment. Barbwire Reading Washburn-Crosby’s Gold Medal Cookbook By BARB LUMLEY Columnist I was very lucky early in life to have a family that instilled a love of reading in me. I enjoy sitting with a cup of tea and reading the daily newspaper. I read books and magazines, anything from the Ohio Holstein News to Oprah to Sports Illustrated. Sometimes late at night when I am having trouble sleeping, I read. Along with the many different things I enjoy reading is cookbooks. Over the years I have collected many of them, the best ones are the ones sold by church groups or farm organizations. They always contain recipes for comfort food! I have supplements put out at the holidays by some of the
newspapers, pages from the Farm and Dairy and recipe boxes, Christmas tins and notebooks filled with recipes that I have cut out. For some reason, more of them are for cake, pies, candy and cookies than for vegetables, soups and meats! I am still looking for that recipe that uses green beans but tastes like pecan pie! One of the many cookbooks I own is a copy of the Gold Medal Flour Cookbook published by Washburn-Crosby Company, Minneapolis, Minn., and copyrighted in 1908, 105 years ago. Several years ago I bought a box of kitchen wares at a public auction and the cookbook was at the bottom of the box. I have no idea whose sale it was. The cookbook contains several recipes

written on paper, one written on a piece of a brown paper bag, and tucked into the book. Some of them have people’s names on them but I do not know any of them. Reading this cookbook is very interesting, and it is filled with recipes and information. It has a “Table of Measure” that includes the following: A speck makes one quarter saltspoon; four saltspoons make one teaspoon. Two gills make one cup. One wine glass makes onehalf gill. Ten eggs, average size, make one pound. Five nutmeg make one ounce. One quart less one gill, sifted patent flour makes one pound. And more! Under “Table of Proportions:” One quart of flour requires one pint of butter or butter and lard mixed for pastry. A spoon means that the material should lie as much above the edge of the spoon as the bowl sinks below it. A heaping teaspoon means that the material should be twice as high above the edge of the spoon
as the bowl sinks below it. A level teaspoon should hold sixty drops of water. A speck is what can be placed within a quarter inch square surface. It lists the time for baking, the time for cooking summer vegetables, the time for winter vegetables and the time for meat. Under the section listed as “Soups” it says: “The making of stock calls for no more than the ordinary amount of skill and attention and it should not be thought either a mystery or a trouble.” Under Mark Twain’s recipe for “Mark Twain’s Beef Steak,” he is quoted as saying, “They have beefsteaks in Europe, but they don’t know how to cook it. Neither will they cut it right. It comes on the table in a small, round pewter platter; it is the size and shape of a man’s hand with the thumb and fingers cut off. It is a little overdone. It is rather dry, it tastes perfectly insipid, it arouses no enthusiasm.” In the meat section,

there were many recipes for beef or ox tongue: Braised Tongue, Baked Tongue, Escalloped Tongue, Tongue in Jelly, and Fillets of Tongue. There were several recipes for “Sweetbreads” but after reading which part of the calf or lamb they come from I don’t think they will be on my menu! It is obvious that in those days every part of the animal was used, nothing was wasted. The following was written under “Vegetables:” If the housekeeper who is so tired of the same old way of preparing vegetables would only study the art of cooking she need never want for variety.” Some of the vegetable recipes included Jerusalem Artichokes, Asparagus in Ambush, Lentil Sarmas, Potatoes Lyonnaise and Oyster Plant. In this day and age we are encouraged to eat healthy by eating more vegetables, fruits, and berries. Personally, I like my berries between two pie crusts! However, we are so lucky to have fresh
fruits, vegetables and berries available at our local grocery store every day. And, if we don’t butcher our own, there is fresh meat of every kind. An advertisement in the cookbook shows a lovely lady sitting in a chair, obviously dreaming, with a sack of Gold Medal Flour beside her. The advertisement is titled “Let Dreams Come True” and this is written below, “It’s worry — not work — that tries one’s soul, and it’s poor bread, a poor table, and poor living that adds to the wife’s trials and nags the patient husband. Why not start housekeeping right, you who are far-sighted and learn the wisdom of utilizing at once every possible means for lightening and brightening your housekeeping duties? Gold Medal flour will make the baking a success. Let’s have it a success in your home from the very beginning. Use Washburn-Crosby’s Gold Medal flour.” The cost of the cookbook was 10 cents.
Club (Continued From Page 7) began using last week’s weights. It will end on March 6. Tom Alexander read “A Teen Is Now A 12 Year KOPS” from the November 2012 TOPS Magazine. Susie joined TOPS at age 14. She reached her goal in 18 months. She then joined the high school track team setting a record run. Later in the U.S. Army, she won awards running marathons. In Europe she joined TOPS, kept running keeping her KOPS status. She said to set your goals and stick by them. The chapter meets each

On any given weekend, homeowners can be found climbing around in attics to add insulation, repairing shingles on the roof, installing new floors in kitchens and bathrooms, and handling many other home improvement projects that, with a little elbow grease, they are able to do themselves. “Small updates can make dramatic improvements to the look and feel of your home, like adding a fresh coat of paint, replacing an exterior door or installing new flooring,” says Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella Windows & Doors spokesperson. One popular project that affects both the exterior and interior of the house is replacing a drafty old entry door with a stylish, energy-efficient one to transform the look and feel of the home without breaking the budget. “As interior and exterior focal points, entry doors add highly-visible curb appeal,” Krafka Harkema says. Fiberglass entry doors are a popular choice. They look like wood, but without the ongoing maintenance needs of wood. Plus, fiberglass offers exceptional energy efficiency, weather-resistance and outstanding durability to resist dents and dings. . For the DIYer interested in installing a new entry door, keep these tips in mind: — Proper installation is critically important to ensure the door opens and closes smoothly and seals correctly to prevent air, light and noise from passing through.Take time to read and follow installation instructions. Pella products feature comprehensive installation instructions to make it easy to properly install them. — Take inventory of the tools you currently have. Deter-

Sledding increases our positive emotions and helps keep us happy by getting us out of the stale indoor air to a natural, outdoor setting. Sledding can be a great cardiovascular exercise as you walk up and slide down the hill. It becomes an excellent cardiovascular exercise if you jog, like me, exaggerated more by the whooping and hollering I do after a particularly swift run. Sledding requires a combination of muscles and balance. It progresses to a fabulous strengthbuilding activity when you drag the sled up the hill with a kid still on it. When I push you out of the way at the top of the hill, it’s nothing personal. It’s just that the act of swiftly zooming down an icy slope with only a cheap piece of plastic between my very self and the snow and rocks and plants gets my heart pumping. My smile gets a little bigger, I laugh just a little bit louder, and in general life gets a little better. If that’s not enough to send you out with breadbags over your socks, I thought I’d further support my theory that sledding is good by providing a few interesting facts, that I promise I didn’t make up. aging is the part that we can control, and I’m not talking about coloring your hair. I’m talking about the theory that you are only as old as you feel. Or even, you’re only as old as you want to be. (Today I packed a piece of plastic doggie doo in my son’s lunch. By this rational, I am approximately 8 years old.) So when faced with the ticking clock, I think it’s important to take time out of our busy adult lives and actually attempt

Sportsman Show Gun Auction will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Close to 100 guns will be auctioned. And if those hunters, fishers and other outdoorsmen are looking for gear and equipment, nearly 150 vendors will be on site selling camouflage, guns, deer stands, jerky, ammunition, hunting bags, tackle, kayaks, canoes, candies, barbecue sauces, spices, shoes, knives and more. That vendor list has continued to grow with the show since the start of the Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show in 2009. The 2012 show featured thousands of patrons, hundreds of sporting goods vendors and numerous seminars taught by nationally known hunting and fishing experts — more are expected this year.

If you’re in search of the perfect off-roading, sport or utility vehicle you may find yourself taking a little extra time checking out the Progressive Mahindra/Arctic Cat booth at the 2013 Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show in Dalton. Possibly the largest display at the event, Dale Klick, Progressive Mahindra’s sales manager, said their booth will be 25 feet by 16 feet featuring displays of both their Arctic Cat-ATVs and Mahindra tractors. “Mahindra tractors are the number one selling tractor in the world,” said Klick. These small diesel tractors have a compact design, four-wheel drive and range anywhere from 25 to 125 horsepower. “They are perfect for anyone looking for a small utility tractor for their property,” said Klick. Progressive will feature five or six of their top of the line Mahindra tractors, displaying a tractor from each size range and horsepower/performance category. Progressive will also display several of their Arctic Cat models in various performance and size options. Featured among the various models will be the newest Arctic Cat model the Wildcat, “which is really cool,” said Klick. “Even in a room full of Arctic Cats, people will stop and say ‘wow that’s awesome!’ (upon seeing the Wildcat),” said Klick. The Wildcat features side-by-side seating, electronic power steering, 5-link rear suspension, 1000 H2 V-twin 4-stroke engine with EFI and 13 inches of ground clearance just to name a few of the perks. Klick said they have attended many fairs and shows with their Arctic Cat displays and the Wildcat has been the most popular ATV in their inventory. At Progressive’s booth you will find a sales representative always on hand to answer any questions you may have about their tractors and ATVs. Klick said they will have giveaways of Red Wing Shoes, gift certificates to Tractor Supply and other local stores. Progressive Mahindra/Arctic Cat of Massillon has been selling Arctic Cat ATVs for several years and Mahindra Tractors for four years. Progressive also sells used cars and trucks and has access to over 300 used vehicles. Progressive keeps close to 100 Mahindra tractors in their store inventory and is one of the largest dealers in the area for these tractors. They also rank among the top 15 largest dealers in the country, said Klick. Customers will also find a large display of Arctic Cat ATVs for browsing in-store. “We have a place to view and test drive vehicles at our facility,” said Klick. This gives customers the opportunity to really get a feel for the product before they purchase it. Progressive Mahindra/Arctic Cat is located at 4025 Erie Avenue NW, in Massillon. “We are between Navarre and Massillon across the street from Tractor Supply,” said Klick. Hours of operation are Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 800-781-4693 or visit www. progessivemahindra.com and don’t forget to visit them at this year’s Sportsman Show January 18 and 19.

Siemon was instrumental in developing the national standards for organic certification; initiated Farmers Advocating for Organics, the only organicfocused granting fund in the U.S., which is funded entirely by Organic Valley farmer-owners, and currently serves on the boards of directors for The Organic Center and Global Animal Partnership. Most recently, Siemon was recognized by the National Resources Defense Council with

His keynote address is titled, “Organic: Changing a Broken Food System” and will take place Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. Siemon will share CROPP’s story and his vision for the future of organic agriculture, and discuss issues currently affecting agriculture such as genetic engineering. He will also be presenting a Saturday morning workshop, “The Cooperative Model,” where he will examine how a cooperative model works and the opportunities they offer for farmers.

serious blow when the Hornets’ leading scorer went down with a torn ACL recently. Damascus has plenty of other offensive weapons at its disposal, led by 6-4 junior post Kelly Prange. Becky Barret and Lauren Darby are a pair of 6-1 seniors that give Damascus quite a presence on the post. This should be an interesting matchup, as Hiland coach Dave Schlabach says this is the smallest team he has ever had during his 22 years of coaching the Hawks. Jasmine Goings at 5-10 is the tallest Hiland player. Regina Hochstetler and Megan Beachy are the top two scoring threats for the Hawks, along with Goings. Here are some other interesting facts about the Classic in the Country Challenge: — Tickets to Classic in the Country Challenge are available at Hiland High School. A three-day pass to the event is $25. A single-day admission is $10. Nonparticipating team rate is $75, for up to 12 players and three coaches. — Since the inception of The Classic in the Country, every Ms. Basketball for the state of Ohio has competed in Classic in the Country; 7 of the 9 in the year they were crowned Ms. Basketball. a head coach. Any guesses? The answer is Tom Flores and Mike Ditka. The unbridled enthusiasm of students is one of the reasons why it’s so tough to win a college basketball game on the road against a good team. The University of Kansas boasts one of the best programs in the nation. Combine the two and visiting teams are in for a rough time at Allen Fieldhouse, where the noise level often reaches ear-blasting 120.0 decibels - equivalent to the roar of a jet engine. Conventional wisdom holds that turnovers are the key to victory in the NFL, but a study completed at the end of the 2011 season revealed that interceptions in particular can be the biggest difference between winning and losing. While each team in the league averaged about one interception per game, the analysis found that every interception that a team threw reduced it’s chances of winning by 20%. How about this - in almost two-thirds of the games in 2011, the team that threw the fewest picks won.
