Community Everybody doesn’t have to know everything about everyone “What goes on under a neighbor’s quilt is nought to me.” — Robert Newton Peck, from “A Day No Pigs Would Die.” Too bad we don’t carry this philosophy today. It seems we think we always have to know what’s going on with everyone, that we need to know every intimate detail in the lives of everyone. I think back to when Bill Clinton was president. I was just as appalled as everyone else by his behavior, but why did we have to know it all? Shouldn’t it have been handled, as it is in most families, as a pri-
vate matter? And poor Chelsea Clinton! Did she really need to have her father’s indiscretions plastered over every newspaper, magazine and television in the world? President or not, celebrity or not, unless people’s indiscretions are keeping them from doing their jobs, then it’s none of our business! We frequently make snap judgments about the behavior of people
without knowing all the facts, and without considering how many times we have done “bad” things ourselves. We all want easy, pat little answers to everything in life, and life just doesn’t work that way. Let me say that cheating is one thing I am not tolerant of; I believe if there’s something wrong in a relationship, you take steps to fix it or you end it. But still, who are we to question someone else’s motives? We do not know what motivates people. Nothing excuses the behavior, of course, but perhaps there are mitigating circumstances we don’t know about,

and it’s likely none of our business to know about it. I have, many times in my life, been aware of some gossip which I never let get beyond me and those involved. When situations came to light and I was asked why I’d never spoken, my answer has always been “Because it was nobody’s business.” We are a society with no boundaries anymore. We display the innermost secrets of our lives on social networking websites, spew our private matters for public consumption, and even act out in public on disputes that would
best be dealt with in private. Our society has no regard for privacy anymore. Our marriages, career foibles and educational failures are broadcast to the public at large. And for what purpose? So the public’s ravenous appetite to live vicariously through others can be fed? As kids today like to say, “Get a life, people!” Stop living through others and live through yourself. The problem remains that newspapers, tabloids, social networking sites, talk shows and even once-respected news networks now spew more
gossip than real news. But they would not be producing a product no one wanted to buy. The fault does not lie with producers and creators, whose job it is to give what the public wants; the fault is our own, our need to window-peep on others in some twisted attempt to believe our lives are better than theirs. (NOTE TO MY READERS — My two eBooks, Dancing With the Skeleton and Mama’s Mumblings are available on Amazon.com for those with a Kindle or other eReader. You can also download the books on your computer.)

In the middle of winter, the foliage of fall is but a memory and the freshness of spring seems so far away. How do we get through the darkest season of the year? There is a way. Truly, as we enter God’s house each week, we come into a welcome atmosphere of warmth where we can sit and rest our work-worn bodies and bask in the glory of our Heavenly Father’s love…where we can experience spiritual renewal. Worship this week; you will find spring for your soul.

Autoworks (Continued From Page 4) The print-out produced by this Snap-on John Bean Alignment Rack is readable by almost anyone, said Rabatin, a feature he most appreciates. “I can take the alignment print-out and show it to anybody who doesn’t know anything about alignments and I can explain to them really easily what the vehicle was like before and after, and they can clearly see it,” he said. At Autoworks, doing more than is required is
part of the culture, said Rabatin, and the staff at Autoworks wants every customer to walk out of the shop knowing that the best service and quality vehicle repairs were received. “No matter what type of a vehicle — whether it’s an old vehicle, a new vehicle or one that we can’t do anything to — we want our managers to treat customers with the same level of importance with total respect and patience,” said Rabatin, noting that it’s also important that estimates
are in-line with customers’ expectations. “We like good communication between our customers and our managers.” All vehicles are returned to the customer washed on the outside and cleaned on the inside. And if a customer needs a service Autoworks can’t perform, the shop will provide a name and phone number of someone Autoworks can trust to do the job. Autoworks works with these quality local companies, such as Wooster
Glass Company, Jim’s Rust Proofing and area parts stores, to provide top service to customers. As an off-shoot of that commitment to working with local companies, Autoworks is helping Dave Firebaugh start up a restoration shop in Millersburg. At the Millersburg shop, Firebaugh will take vehicles apart, take the parts to another shop to get sandblasted and primed then go to Autoworks for the bodywork and painting. Then, the parts go back to the restoration
shop to be fully restored with chrome and trim. “It should really speed up the turnaround time for people who want to have their vehicles restored,” said Rabatin, noting that such an organized and stream-lined restoration process will speed up the time-consuming process. “For people who have older cars — say you have a car grandpa had and you want to fix it up but don’t want to spend the next 10 years or more of your life doing it — you can schedule a date and
proceed with it.” That shop is expected to open mid-2013. Autoworks Collision Repair can be found at three locations: In Wooster at 1457 W. Old Lincoln Way, Wooster 44691; in Holmesville at 305 Benton Road (County Road 189), Holmesville 44633; and at Underwood Motors in Wooster, 2626 Cleveland Road, Wooster 44691.

Culling the herd four wheels at a time After serially outgrowing first a tiny, two-door hatchback; then a fourdoor sedan; and eventually even an average-sized station wagon; my family ultimately settled into traveling the planet in the mother of all station wagons — a Chevrolet Suburban. Now, 12 years and 5,000 gallons of gasoline later, a day I once only dared but imagine has arrived — the trend toward bigger has finally begun to reverse! My family is contracting! In reality, there are just as many of us Lorsons as ever, but the need for a vehicle capable of carrying all of us at once has diminished. Four of the five people in our house are now entirely capable of driving themselves around, and frankly it seems as if they prefer to do just that. Consequently, the utility of owning and maintaining a vehicle capable of carrying seven people, two dogs, a dozen bicycles and a standard ton of camping gear has been largely erased.
We knew it would someday make sense to say goodbye to our beloved family vacation machine, but the ceaselessly loyal beast (longago dubbed “the great, white people-hauler”) refused to give us a truly compelling reason to do so. And even though she’s spent the vast majority of her time the past few years stabled quietly in a warm garage, she’s leapt to life and rumbled down the road each time duty has called. Most recently she’d carried the lot of us to a beach a thousand miles away and delivered us safely home again without so much as a burp. Great White has been loyal, dependable and true for the duration of her career and may have remained
with us forever, eventually pastured happily out back and trotted forth for parade duty and the occasional classic car cruise-in had her fate not been tied to that of her diminutive stablemate, Zippy. It has never been my intention to live in a home where cars outnumber licensed drivers, yet mysteriously that’s exactly where we’ve ended up — four vehicles for three drivers — with Charlotte away at school in her own ride. Mind you, only one of these cars (Kristin’s, of course) was built in this century and the average age of the entire bunch is an impressively road-saltdefying 15 years. Kristin’s car is also the only one that boasts a fair market value beyond what I might pay for a decent mountain bike. In order to explain how a simple pair of cars blossomed into a fleet, we’d need to step back through decades of family history. I really don’t have that kind of space here. Let’s just
say that people kept turning 16 around here and I kept finding bargains — perhaps the greatest of which was a little, red Neon. “Zippy” was well up in years when I bought her from my sister-in-law for a song. She was intended for our soon-to-be 16-year-old daughter, Charlotte. However, on the very first drive home I fell in love. Charlotte never drove Zippy — not even once! I picked up a ratty little S-10 for a couple hundred bucks just to shut her up, which worked
out wonderfully for me, as Charlotte eventually bought her own car out of sheer embarrassment. Her less narcissistic brother still drives that truck. Zippy became my every day runner and the Suburban became essentially an RV, rolled-out only for camping trips, vacations and the like. Once those types of adventures became fewer and further between, Kristin and I agreed that it would make sense at some point to replace Great
White and Zippy with a single car positioned somewhere between the hulk and heft of a Suburban, with the sprite and spunk of a Neon. That moment arrived as Zippy fell to the vehicular equivalent of a catastrophic aneurism just after the New Year. After a grieving process that lasted somewhat less than a day, I found myself behind the wheel of an altogether new type of creature. We’ll talk more about that next week!

Sharing with you a tale about tails By BARB LUMLEY Columnist In this day and age we shouldn’t be surprised at the unusual things that thieves will choose to steal. However, I was taken back a bit when I recently read an article in Farm World. Thieves in southern Illinois entered the Southern Illinois Equestrian Center near Marion on two separate occasions and cut the tails on six horses. It is believed that the theft is tied to the market value of horsetails for use as extensions for show horses and for horsehair jewelry. The act of stealing horsetails is more widespread out West. Horsetail hair can sell for upwards of $80 to $100 each on the black market, especially hair with
unique colors. There are websites for show horses that sell horsetail extensions for up to $500 each, depending on the colors and the weight. There is a growing market for horsehair bracelets that don’t take much hair to make. Approximately three feet of the tails was removed from each horse. While it doesn’t cause pain, it leaves the horses with problems during the summer months, as the tails are needed to swat away the biting flies. In Illinois the act of stealing a horsetail is a Class A misdemeanor that carries with it a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Tails are not only important for the comfort of horses in the summer, they are also much need-
ed by cows that go out to pasture. As I read about the loss of the horses’ tails, it brought back memories of another tail. Many years ago we were in need of a couple dairy cows to replace ones that we had culled. My Dad and I attended a public auction of 80 registered Holstein dairy cows near Navarre. We arrived early and looked over the herd. We found only two cows in the entire herd that were the nice dairy type and the kind of udders we were looking for. We were lucky enough to bid those two in for $500 and $510 each, a pretty high price at that time. One of the cows was sired by an A.I. bull named Sir Wallace Design and had been bred in the herd of Ken-
neth Renner at Dalton, Ted Renner’s father. Her name was Sally and she had been housed with those other 79 cows in a straw shed-type barn. We brought her home and put her in a stanchion barn. One of the things we noticed about her was that every night when my Dad went to the barn at 11 o’clock to check on things, she would be standing up eating while most of the other cows would be at rest. She wasn’t a big cow, and we decided that those other 79 cows had been pushing her back from the feed and she wasn’t going to let an opportunity to eat her fill go by! Her production increased and she was a very good cow! Our cows were out on pasture in the summer,
and as we watched them making their way to the barn one hot summer evening, we realized something was wrong with Sally. She was covered in blood from head to tail! As sometimes happens, she had been lying down and another cow had evidently stood on her tail. When she jumped up, the end of her tail and the switch were torn off. She had kept swinging her tail until there was blood everywhere. We hosed her down and got the bleeding stopped. We kept her in the barn for a few days until it healed and then let her go back out to pasture with the other cows. It was hot and there were lots of flies and the fly spray just didn’t last on her, so she was miser-
able. I decided I had to do something to help her. I cut a piece from a burlap feed bag, then cut it into strips of proper length, leaving a band at the top. I wrapped the band around her tail and I taped it fast. I had to experiment for a few times to get it just right. Once I did, Sally’s “fake tail” would last for three or four days. By that time she would have the strips worn out, and I would make her another one. She was more content, her production didn’t suffer, and I felt much better! Simple home fix-ups to complete in a weekend shower to create a serene sanctuary within minutes. Available at The Home Depot (approximately $59), Halo features an innovative, pivoting double-ring design which provides 60 percent more coverage than traditional 9-inch rainshowers. Three spray settings — full rainshower, deep massage and relaxing massage — create a spa-like experience, and with an easy two-step installation, you can upgrade your bathroom in no time. Another fast fix for the bathroom is to simply get organized ... and stay that way. Keep your hand towels tidy by installing a Retractable Towel Ring. The thoughtfully designed accessory offers the traditional benefit of a towel ring, with a retractable cord that extends from the base to allow the towel to be used — yet stay neatly in place. Simply pull the towel toward you, dry hands
and release. The unique accessory is the ideal solution for your bath, or even kitchen or laundry room, to keep your towels remaining securely on the towel ring. Within minutes you’ll have a clean, up-to-date space you’ll want to show off. Refurbish the living room As one of the gathering areas for your family or guests, the living room can get dirty quickly, especially the carpet. Footprints, pet odors or food

Fancy fixtures As the workhorse of the kitchen, we have dozens of daily interactions at the sink. So, give your kitchen a functionality facelift by upgrading your faucet. The innovative Moen Delaney or Haysfield kitchen faucets with MotionSense are an ideal choice to bring your kitchen into the digital decade. MotionSense allows you to accomplish a variety of routine tasks with speed and efficiency, offering you three ways to operate the faucet. In addition to the traditional handle, you can activate it by using the Wave Sensor — by waving your hand over the faucet to turn on and off — or the Ready Sensor — by placing your hands or an object under the spout. to any crazy home remedy, old wives tale, or even email forward that proclaims it can keep us from getting sick. Literally, if someone told me that holding a barbecue pork rind between my toes on my left foot while drinking a glass of water with dog food in it could keep us healthy, I would do it. I get that crazy during cold and flu season, and even crazier when I hear things like,“Mom, we had eight kids out today!” Or, “Mom, our teacher left early because she was barfing!” My head starts to spin, and in a zombie-like trance, I head straight for the pork rinds, because the thought of rescheduling a halted life due to a fever or a few hours hovering the toilet is too much to handle. The Internet, bless it, is full of as many wacky remedies as all of your great aunts and uncles gathered in a room, sharing their wisdom. And because I care about each and every reader out there, I thought I would share a
few of the oddities that may or may not keep us healthy. ... — Place an onion cut in half in every room. From countless emails, this little dandy is supposed to absorb all of the viruses floating around your house, and somebody’s hairdresser in Arizona just swears by it. Does it work? Not sure. Does it make me have a taste for onion rings? Probably. — Chew a piece of raw garlic every 3-4 hours. It’s no surprise that garlic is the flavor of choice, as we’ve heard this many times especially in the form of Grandma’s Chicken Soup. My grandma, however, doesn’t put garlic in her soup because she doesn’t like it. My family loves it, but not enough to actually munch on a raw clove. My breath stinks just thinking about it. — Don’t let your feet get cold. I generally dislike being cold, so this tactic I kind of like. The theory goes that chilly tootsies make your nose more susceptible to germs. I’m not going to try to understand — I’ll just put on
some slippers and call it a day. Other great ideas during my research: Some people actually consume non-food items to stay healthy or get healthy. I think it’s not the best idea. Especially since I also read that something like drinking hot coffee can help keep you from getting sick by washing nasty germs into your stomach which doesn’t matter much to me because all I heard was a good reason to drink coffee. Another couple of tips: Open restroom doors with a paper towel instead of your hand. Read menus by holding them by the top instead of the more popular bottom. Take deep breaths every day. Keep your fingernails short. Kiss on the lips. Eat your boogers (I am not making this up, and beg of you to not try this at home). But mostly, wash your hands. Stay home if you’re hacking and sneezing all over the place. And stock up on pork rinds. Endnote: I realize I have completely jinxed my family in the writing of this article.
The most neglected fixture in your home might be hanging right
above your head — the ceiling fan. Luckily, by flipping a switch, you can improve the effectiveness of this overhead oversight. Start with dusting the fan blades and housing, and then simply reverse the fan’s usual summer rotation to a clockwise spin to push down warm air from the ceiling. This is easily done with a switch located on the side of the fan’s motor. Don’t think that fix-ups can’t fit into your fastpaced life. By following these helpful hints, you can quickly and easily renew your home now and make it an inviting retreat throughout the year.

Income Tax & Financial Services The six most common identity theft risks at tax time of credit and commit other acts of fraud. It’s important to keep identity protection front-of-mind during tax preparation season. Take steps to protect yourself against these six common identity theft risks during tax time: Stolen tax documents — Your tax forms contain a wealth of personal information. Important documents such as W-2s and interest statements begin to arrive in the mail in January. Theft of these forms could be disastrous. If you don’t already have one, consider investing in a locking mailbox or renting a secure post office box. Avoid leaving incoming mail sitting in your mailbox for any length of time, and always take outgoing mail directly to your local post office branch.

Unsecured documents — Once you’ve retrieved these documents from the mailbox, don’t let security lag. Never leave sensitive documents lying around in plain sight in your vehicle, home or workplace. Keep documents in a locked safe or file cabinet. Phishing scams — Identity thieves often prey on tax-time anxiety by sending emails or making phone calls that purport to be from the IRS or other federal agency. These tactics are designed to bilk you out of sensitive information. It’s simple to avoid these scams: ignore all such communications. The IRS uses good old-fashioned snail mail — never email, text messages or phone calls
— to communicate with tax payers. If you suspect you’re being scammed by someone posing as an IRS representative, report the incident to the IRS by forwarding suspicious emails to phishing@ irs.gov. Sloppy CPA — You hire a tax preparer to help ensure you get the maximum return or minimum payment — and that you don’t run afoul of complex tax laws. Yet your tax preparer can cause you problems if he or she fails to properly safeguard your documents. Be cautious when hiring a tax preparer — only work with someone you know or whose reputation you’ve investigated. Ask who will have access to your documents and how
your preparer will keep your forms and information secure. Slipshod storage — Everyone knows you have to hold on to tax documents. In most cases, you should keep tax returns and supporting documents for at least three years from the date of filing. Keep forms in a secure, locked location — or store them digitally in password protected files. When it’s time to dispose of documents, shred them with a cross-cut shredder before getting rid of them. Failing to monitor your identity — Keeping an eye on your credit and financial accounts is the single most proactive step you can take to protect your identity at tax time
— and throughout the year. Check your credit report before and after tax season, and several times throughout the year. Consider enrolling in a comprehensive identity theft detection, protection and resolution product like ProtectMyID. The product is designed to help consumers identify early signs of identity theft and minimize or prevent the damages caused by identity theft. Log on to www. ProtectMyID.com to learn more. Tax season is stressful enough without having to worry about the risk of identity theft. It’s important to take steps to minimize your risk leading up to tax day, and through the remainder of the year.

(BPT) — Tax time is always tough. Whether you will owe or anticipate a refund, plan to do your own taxes or pay a professional to do them for you, preparing and filing your taxes can be a tedious task. It can also be a risky one: the information needed to prepare your taxes is a treasure trove for enterprising identity thieves. The nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center notes that for identity thieves, “tax time is a prime time of opportunity.” Forms such as W-2s and IRS tax forms usually include your Social Security number, name and address, and often, financial account information, the ITRC notes. Using that information, identity thieves can access your existing financial accounts, open new lines

Winter horse race coming down the stretch Like a horse race, the winter sports season has made the turn and is heading for the back stretch. As we make our way to the finish line, some things are going as planned and some pleasant surprises have also come along. The West Holmes Lady Knights have played better and better each game, showing they are more than just Laina Snyder. Rachelle Morrison pumped in 24 points in an impressive showing at the Classic in the Country (CitC), helping West Holmes rally for a comeback win over Columbus Africentric. The girls then went out and thoroughly thumped a very good North Canton Hoover squad. The Knights have earned the No. 1 ranking in the state, having deposed a pair of reigning state champions (Hathaway Brown and Africentric). Of course, rankings mean little if the team doesn’t con-
tinue to perform once the second season starts. The tournaments tip off in mid-February, only a few short weeks away. The Hiland girls are playing great basketball these days. “All Gina (Regina Hochstetler) did was earn herself a Div. I scholarship,” said Hiland coach Dave Schlabach, after her six 3-pointers and 30-point performance in the finale of the Classic, a stunning win by the Lady Hawks over a very good and big Uniontown Lake squad. Hiland vanquished a pair of bigger teams in the CitC, getting outstanding post defense from Jasmine Goings, as well as Natalie Nickol and Rachel Horn. Kendra Schlabach has picked up her offensive
effort, giving the Hawks another capable scorer, and the win over Garaway this past week all but secured another Inter-Valley Conference championship for Hiland. On the boys’ side of things, the Hiland boys have put together a 13-2 record through the first 15 games, losing only to Garaway and reigning state champion Dunbar. The Hawks will get a chance to avenge their loss to the Pirates this Friday at home. Todd Ropp is having a huge season, averaging 13 points and eight boards for the Hawks. Jordan Yoder is next, averaging almost nine points and Lucas Mast has come off the bench to give the Hawks some instant offense, increasing his scoring average to almost seven points per game. Brennan Coil is playing well inside, averaging almost six points and five boards a game. The amazing thing
about the Hawks’ success so far this season is how much this young group of players has matured and developed as the season has gone along. It also says volumes about Mark Schlabach’s abilities as a coach. This guy just wins and does not accept anything less.
West Holmes discovered what a soothing balm sports can be, as Donnie Dowling turned to his teammates in a time of tragedy to help him get through the loss of his little brother in a car accident. Dowling was driving his younger brother to school on Thursday when the
car skidded off the road, struck a tree and embankment and rolled over. At Wooster, the day after the tragic accident, the Generals’ crowd gave Dowling a standing ovation before and after the game, in which the See Pg. 20 — HORSE

the 6-foot-6 senior scored five points and grabbed three rebounds in a 57-50 win over the Generals. Dowling was grateful for the support from his teammates and the community. The Knights have had to overcome an injured ankle to star guard Brady Arnold, but his absence has forced other players to step up, and
Grant Hay and Michael DeWitt have both been picking up their games of late, which will be beneficial down the stretch. The Knights wrestlers had a disappointing showing at the inaugural State Duals last week at Claymont, falling to New Philadelphia, but they responded with a resounding win at their own invitational tournament on Satur-
day. Max Rohskopf was the tournament MVP and 170-pounder Tyler McElroy earned his first tournament win as West Holmes placed in 13 of the 14 weight classes. The Knights will need to have that kind of production this weekend when they head to Clear Fork for the Ohio Cardinal Conference meet. Lexington is easily considered the favorite to take home the title.

The Ohio Aggregates and Industrial Minerals Association honored state Rep. Dave Hall from Ohio’s 70th District with the Robert A. Wilkinson Award. The award recognizes individuals who, although not employed by the aggregates industry, have provided leadership on a national or state level and have been instrumental in developing policies that recognize the importance of the aggregates and industrial minerals industry. Speaking to a group of more than 400 industry professionals, OAIMA Executive Director Patrick Jacomet commented on Hall’s achievements. “As chair of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, Chairman Hall guided the committee through two iterations of the
Great Lakes Compact Implementation Language, an historic pact now in place to protect and set responsible standards for water use and conservation within the basin. His knowledge of the subject matter and leadership were instrumental in the passage of the second version of the Great Lakes Compact,” Jacomet said. Hall lives in Millersburg with his wife, Anita, and has two children, Kyle and Kimberly. Hall serves as chairman of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, Finance and Appropriations Committee, and the Finance Subcommittee on Agriculture and Development, and is a member of the newly created Manufacturing and Workforce Development Committee.

Knights play with heavy heart
The West Holmes Knights basketball team donned No. 33 Clabough T-shirts last Friday to commemorate teammate Donny Dowling’s brother, Lane Clabough, who was killed in a car accident the day before.
Honor Dowling’s fallen brother in win over Wooster By AARON DORKSEN Sports Editor For an outsider looking in, the box score from the West Holmes boys basketball team’s 57-50 win over host Wooster was typical of hundreds of games played across Ohio Friday night. A pair of league rivals squared off in a hotly contested game in which neither team shot exceptionally well or even had a player top 15 points. However, what happened before, during and after the contest was an extraordinary display of courage by West Holmes’ 6-foot-6 senior Donnie Dowling and an incredible show of support from the Knights’ team, community and even the host Generals. The box score shows Dowling scored five points off the bench and grabbed three rebounds. How Dowling was able to play after the tragedy he and his family endured the day before was nothing short of remarkable — and something neither he nor those in attendance are likely to ever forget. Just 48 hours earlier, a car Dowling was driving skidded off a snow-covered back road and crashed on the way to school, killing his 12-year-old brother, Lane Clabough. Do you want me to play (Friday)?’ Just then the wind picked up real hard, so I went in and told my mom and step-dad (Tish and Fred Clabough) and talked to them about it and said I wanted to play. Then I told my coach (Jim Lindeman) I wanted to play. I thought about it all day today and I knew when game-time came I’d be focused and play in honor of Lane.” Although many people were predictably and correctly saying that Lane’s death was an example of how athletics pawle in comparison to life, a simple sporting event wound up See Pg. 24 — HONOR

The answer is the San Antonio Spurs at .702, and Tim Duncan is a major reason why. For 13 consecutive seasons, Duncan was named to the All-NBA and All-Defensive team, six more than any other player in history. But age catches up with everyone. During the 2011-12’ season, when Duncan was given a night off, the reason stated was: DNP-OLD. Can running a successful business translate into running a successful football team? It did in 2012 for Coastal Carolina. The new coach there was Joe Moglia, better known as CEO of TD American from 2001-08’, during which he increased the companies stock value from $700 to $10 billion. The Chanticleers bet on the leadership philosophy of their “billionaire coach” - hire top people, maximize your skill sets, and fallow a long-range plan. West Holmes suddenly flipped a switch with an 8-0 run that took just 1 minute, taking the lead for good after a 3-pointer from Michael DeWitt (game-high 15 points), steal and layup by Grant Hay and another 3 from Dewitt. “It’s a great honor to be able to be there for Donnie and to have such a great community that’s there for him,” DeWitt said. “It shows how much we support him and how much we love him.” Dowling wound up making more than just a token appearance. After enter-
ing the game, he grabbed two quick rebounds and scored a layup on a nice feed from Brady Arnold to help his team lead 15-8 after one quarter. Wooster (8-7, 4-5) cut the West Holmes lead to 24-21 at the half after a 3-pointer from Mason Tomblin (team-high 13 points). “We knew there would be a ton of emotion,” said Lindeman, who commended both the West Holmes and Wooster communities for their support. “Sometimes that can be a good thing, sometimes it can be a bad thing. “I think it showed in the offense early as we missed a ton of layups. The Holmes County Shopper News of energy on defense and were able to make some big plays in the second half. I’m so proud of our team and I said to our guys these are special times when you can rally around a brother. It is just a game, but for that couple of hours it allows people to have some normalcy in a real hard time.” The Generals trailed 36-33 late in the third quarter. Dowling took a feed from Gabe Snyder with 15.6 seconds left in the third quarter, though, and turned it into an oldfashioned three-point play to close the period with the Knights up 39-35. West Holmes pushed the lead out to double digits in the fourth quarter, helped by big buckets from Josh Neer (10 points), Arnold (10 points, 4 assists), Brock Macaulay (eight points) and Gabe Snyder (seven points, eight rebounds). Snyder became the school’s career rebounding leader in the game, while Macaulay put the exclamation point on the win with a slam dunk with 28 seconds left. Wooster was in the game until committing
several miscues down the stretch. “We’re upset with the loss, but when you put things into perspective with what’s happened to Donnie and his family, obviously that’s an awful thing for anyone to have to go through,” Wooster coach Craig Martin said. “We were happy to support them any way we could.” After the game more emotions flowed out for the Knights, who wore black bands on their jerseys and wrote “ripLC” on their shoes. “I just feel so bad for the kids,” Lindeman said. “I’m very close with Donnie. Lane was a ball boy for us last year and he was a student of mine this year and future player. “He sat in the front row of my (seventh-grade) world history class every day and he just had an infectious attitude. He was someone who always made you laugh and was a pleasure to be around.” Dowling pointed to the sky after the final whistle and said these words to his brother: “That was for you, Bubba, and I love you.”
