Community ‘Empty nester’ parents still fill need in children’s lives “We are good parents not so they will be loving enough to stay with us but so they will be strong enough to leave us.” — Anna Quindlen, from “Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake.” My husband and I are what is generally known as “Empty Nesters.” Our daughter moved out in 2008 and our son moved out last August. I’d heard all about being an Empty Nester, the loneliness, the heartache, the sadness. But, actually, I didn’t feel as bad as I thought I would, but I also didn’t
feel as good as I thought I would. I remember the Monday after my daughter moved out. A colleague asked if I’d “just cried all weekend.” I was stymied for a moment, wondering if answering truthfully would make me look like a bad mom. I hadn’t cried all weekend. Oh, I’d had that moment of
“oh ... my baby is moving out.” But that moment quickly turned to knowledge that I had done my job. I had an almost 22-year-old who felt she was ready to embark upon her own life within her own control. I’ve actually grown to like the quietness of the house. I don’t trip over video games anymore, clothes aren’t strewn around the two spare bedrooms. I have less laundry, fewer messes to clean up, and my grocery bill has literally been cut in half. I can come and go as I please without
having to answer to anyone. I can cook whenever I want to and not have to meet multiple schedules. The TV is mine, and I don’t have to worry about anyone moaning and groaning or making fun when I want to play Broadway soundtracks and sing along, or lament the fact that a woman of “my age” shouldn’t be listening to Green Day and Blink 182. My life is now my own. But that does not mean I don’t miss them. I miss the philosophical talks my son and I had while the hubby was working.

We’d be watching something on TV that sparked conversation and soon it’s midnight, we’ve missed three or four of our shows, and we should both really be in bed. I miss my daughter pounding into the bathroom to slam down the toilet lid, as I lay in the whirlpool tub, so she can tell me about her day’s frustrations. I miss the giggles, the incessant phone calls that were never for me, the hectic pace of young men and women breezing in and out of my life. But being an Empty Nester doesn’t mean
I’m no longer a mother. Both of my children still call on their Mama K when life throws them a curveball or doesn’t quite meet their expectations. And my phone rings, too, when life gives them success and reward. The fact that I’m an Empty Nester doesn’t mean I’m no longer needed or appreciated. It just means I was a good mom who reared strong children who feel powerful enough to lead their own lives. Yet, they are also strong enough to know when to ask for help.

The University of Akron Wayne College’s Holmes County Higher Education Center will play host to the state-wide college financial aid event College Goal Sunday on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. The free event, presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents, assists
students and parents in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans, as well as the need-based state grants. Regina Schwartz, director of communications for Wayne College, said
because of the demand expected for assistance in completing the FASFA, families are encouraged to register for the free event at www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org or by calling 1-800-233-6734. While walk-ins are welcome, registration is encouraged. Schwartz said, “The FAFSA is the key to funding a college educa-
tion and helping families to overcome financial barriers that otherwise prevent students from attending the institiutions they want to. Studies show that a student is 50 percent more likely to attend college when they complete the FAFSA.” The Holmes County Higher Education Center is located at 88-B E. Jackson St., Millersburg.

Auto intuition: She knows you’ve got a wandering eye As one of thousands of red Plymouth Neons on the planet she would have easily blended in with the crowd were it not for the bicycle rack bolted to the roof and emblazoned with a smattering of stickers. The most conspicuous of these decals was one depicting the little car’s namesake, the University of Akron’s kangaroo mascot, Zippy. With the rack, Zippy was noticeable enough, but when there were bicycles on top she was impossible to miss. Dwarfed by her cargo, she seemed an awkward, almost top-heavy creature — like a piglet that had sprouted a set of caribou antlers. The car was, indeed, a bit of a local oddity, and not entirely unlike her owner in that regard. A little car that was asked to do an awful lot, I knew she was living on borrowed time. I knew, too, that I’d be sad to see Zippy go, but the fear of becoming stranded in the middle of nowhere — a place where I seem to
frequently find myself traveling — was becoming more real with each passing day. I began to drive ever more slowly past used car lots, and spend a little more time each weekend perusing the car-ad-plastered final pages of the newspaper. I did these things inconspicuously, as it is common knowledge that you mustn’t let on to your present car that you’re in the hunt for its replacement. To do so will almost assuredly result in a catastrophic failure of some critical system essential to the sale or trade of that car. One must be stealthy when dealing with these beasts. Somewhere, somehow, my cover was blown. Zippy suddenly began to cook through oil like a movie theater popcorn machine. Even a numb-
skull like me knows it doesn’t make sense to sink a thousand bucks into a $500 car. That was that. Call it fate, luck, or destiny; but it just so happened that Zippy’s demise coincided with the local lot arrival of a full-sized version of my favorite sandbox toy! In the wink of an eye I was driving home in a Jeep! When I broke the news to Kristin, she reminded me that we had agreed
that once Zippy was gone we would replace both the tiny car AND the giant Suburban with something “in between.” I convinced her that the Wrangler fit the bill. “Well, it’s as tall as a Suburban, but only as long as a Neon,” I said. “Thus it is the perfect ‘in between!’ Furthermore, it’s got a soft-top so in the summer we’ve got ourselves a convertible!” I knew the latter would
Tests for finding your true age This morning I reached into my oversized purse and fished through in search of my keys, which ended up being in my coat pocket, but that’s beside the point. The point is that I found the following items floating around down there: wallet, checkbook, pack of tissues, deck of playing cards and cough drops. And if I was a betting woman, I would guess that the contents of my nearly 90-year-old grandmother’s purse would be exactly the same thing. I laughed, and then felt like I should maybe qualify for the senior citizen discount because the wisdom of true necessity is not usually reached by someone as young as I. This whole scenario played out the morning after my children and I went out for dinner at 4:00. And while I know most of you are thinking early-bird special, I will tell you that as we sat in that nearly empty restaurant, we all felt
our youth and it was not based on the time or the few other clientele at the nearby tables. It was based on our absolute immaturity. (At this time I’d like to apologize to those lovely people around us.) We laughed to the point of snorting. There was a catapult designed that sent a butter container sailing. We even tried to play a practical joke on my daughter but the couple at the next table over may have actually believed we left her there on purpose because they didn’t see us hiding behind the next row of booths and kind of blew it. For the record, I have also rigged a toy in our home bathroom that makes a random flatulent noise whenever someone turns on the light.
But I should also add that in my constant quest to find a pinochle game, I have much more luck with a crowd of retirees. So if you asked me how old I really, truly am, I wouldn’t at all know the answer. My mother would answer “10.” My children would answer “80.” The Internet, however, is designed for just these situations. According to quick health-based test, I am 31 years old. According to a quick maturity test, I’m 40. I think these are bogus numbers, so like any person intelligent beyond her years who proudly carries cough drops, I thought I’d make my own test based on zero scientific study and that barely makes any sense. Test A: Do you marvel at the first flowers of spring? Do you like riding your bike super fast? Do you think fireworks are really, really cool? If you came to my house and had to use the
bathroom, would you tumble out in hysterics because of the sound of turning on the light? If you answered “yes” to any of these, you are 10 years old. Welcome to the club. Test B: Do you enjoy décor and buy matching throw pillows? Do you read business newspapers? Do you follow the latest diet trend even if it means you can’t have doughnuts which are, quite frankly, a ball of fried deliciousness? Do you wear trouser socks or panty hose? If you answered “yes” to these, you’ve got to be about 40. Sorry. Test C: Do you like to play pinochle? Do you always have a tissue handy? If you answered “yes” to these questions, you’re just plain fabulous. Contact or read more at www.KarrieMcAllister. com.
get her. The only chore left was to primp and polish the Suburban and set her out with a “For Sale” sign in the window. This chore was made relatively simple by the fact that since the Suburban’s arrival in our stable a dozen years ago, she had been treated more like a string of pearls than a car — rolled out only for special occasions then patted and polished before being tucked carefully
away until the next event. Nevertheless, I spent a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon going over the car inside and out at my brother’s detail shop down the road. Upon returning home I backed into the drive with just a few more particulars to take care of. I believe this may have been the moment the Suburban finally figured out what I was up too! (To be continued next week!)

Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area calls Solon back By ART HOLDEN Outdoor Editor When Dennis Solon retired two years ago with nearly 31 years of service for the Ohio Division of Wildlife — all at the Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area — he left with a profound love of the 3,671-acres of swamp, farmland, river and woodlands. It seems he loved it so much, that now he’s back, only this time, as manager of Ohio’s largest inland marsh. “I’ve always had a passion for the Killbuck Marsh, and I will until the day they spread my ashes over the place,” said Solon this past week, his first on the job as head of the four-member team that manages not only the KMWA, but Funk Bottoms and five other public lands under the auspices of the Division of Wildlife. “This place wasn’t just a job, it was an existence for me.” When the position of manager came up after Mike Ervin took a promotion to state waterfowl biologist, Solon felt he needed to return to the place he feels to strongly about, re-uniting with fellow veteran KMWA employees John Abele and Erich Long, along with Greg Hochstetler, who ironically, replaced Solon when he retired as a wildlife technician. “We know each other and have always had a good working relationship,” said Solon of working with Abele and Long. “It’ll make the job that much easier and that much more productive. “And Greg brings knowledge from previously working in North Carolina.” Solon, who holds a bachelor of science degree from The Ohio State University in wildlife management, says his plans for the KMWA are simple — do what the public wants. “I work for you — the people who appreciate wildlife and wetlands,” he said.

Back after a short retirement, The Ohio Division of Wildlife named Dennis Solon the new manager of the Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area. Solon retired two years ago after nearly 31 years of working at the KMWA. His passion for the diverse 3,671-acre area will help guide him in his management of the state’s largest inland marsh. More specifically, Solon said waterfowl is the top priority. “It’s a very important area for waterfowl, but there’s a lot of associated things that go with it,” Solon said. “We have 2,000 acres of wetlands and the higher grounds we have to take care of, too.” While working on wetlands isn’t the same as when Solon started with the Division of Wildlife back in 1980, mainly because of permits and regulations, the hope is he and his staff will be able to continue to provide the public with a bustling wildlife area. “I want to do anything we can do to protect the wetlands we have, and promote, or convert, different wetlands where feasible,” said Solon. “Places that are too wet for rabbits, and too dry for muskrats.” The KMWA is a unique piece of property that has changed over the years. At the turn of the century, a winding Killbuck Creek
snaked through the valley between Wooster and Shreve, dropping a mere 10 feet along the way. In the 1920s, the river was
channelized, opening fields to farming and changing the landscape. Over time, though, the Killbuck ditch has silted in, and has taken

on a new dynamic. And, it’s still changing. It’s one of the things Solon likes about the KMWA, and also one of the challenges in managing the area. “Every day you get up, the wildlife area is a different picture,” said Solon. While Solon and his staff are looking to improve nesting opportunities for waterfowl, he hasn’t forgotten about the upland game hunters. “This used to be some of the best rabbit hunting in the state right here in the Killbuck Valley,” said Solon. “We’re going to try to bring back better rabbit hunting.” The KMWA is also a top location for public hunting of deer and turkey, and has on occasion, been a hot spot for early fall dove hunting. Solon doesn’t plan to overlook those species, either, “When I leave here at
night, I’m just like everyone else, I want to see ducks. I want to see deer. I want to see turkeys,” said Solon. “It’s a very diverse area with good access. You’re going to see something here that makes you grab your binoculars.” After two years away, Solon realized he just had too much to offer to not return to the swamps, farmland, woods and river. “This area is my backyard. I know it like you know your yard,” said Solon. “I’ve been working or recreating on it for so long, I’ve gotten to know it, and I think my knowledge of it is a big advantage.” When it’s all said and done, though, there’s always been one thing that’s kept Solon returning to work in the Killbuck Valley Marsh Wildlife Area. “I grew up playing in the water as a kid,” he said, “and I guess it never went away.”

If you’re thinking of going green, small changes such as using compact fluorescent light bulbs can contribute to reducing your home’s carbon footprint. Fluorescent light bulbs typically have a longer life and use less energy thereby reducing excessive energy waste as well as monthly energy bills. Investing in energyefficient appliances is another effective way to live green and add value to your home. Many modern air conditioners use 30 to 50 percent less

Homeowners with an old central air system can consider having a new, more energy efficient HVAC system installed. While these may come with an expensive up-front cost, the savings on energy bills over the long term will prove to be a wise investment. Additionally, the inclusion of other energy efficient appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and dryers will contribute to lower energy bills. Fredericksburg Rotator Cuff Part 3: Major pain with a minor name
the head of the humerus and weakly rotates the shoulder backwards. This movement is also called external rotation. I’ve seen this muscle create very deceptive tricks when it has active trigger points. One example is what I call “mouser’s arm.” This can happen when a person has been using the computer mouse too much, which statically engages the teres minor. I say “statically” because there isn’t a lot of broad movement when we are using this little device. Mousing doesn’t create a lot of blood flow to the muscle, but it does contract it. This longterm contraction can irritate the TM, and the
result can be tingling or numbness through the pinky finger side of the forearm and wrist, and sometimes even into the hand. I say it is a deceptive trick because all of these sensations come from the overworked teres minor — which is way up in the shoulder.
The key giveaway that this is the scenario is that when the TM is palpated or pressed on, the symptoms in the wrist and forearm will show up and/or be amplified. By releasing the restricted points, the uncomfortable symptoms fade away. To continue with its
deceptiveness, consider that referred pain from the TM is sometimes masked by deeper pain in the front of the shoulder which originates in the infraspinatus. When the infraspinatus is treated, sometimes clients begin to sense discomfort in the back of the shoul-
der, which is caused by teres minor. This pain in the back of the shoulder is actually the most common trigger point referral for TM and becomes pretty obvious when it is treated. Whichever area you See Pg. 15 — CUFF

You may have read my recent columns about two rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder: the infraspinatus and the supraspinatus. The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles that stabilize the shoulder joint and help provide its diverse range of motions. Like the hip, the shoulder is a balland-socket joint — one where a knobby bone fits into the cavity of another bone, allowing great freedom of movement when healthy. So, how about when it is not so healthy? Well, another of the littleknown muscles of the rotator cuff is called the teres minor. It can cause a lot of discomfort when injured, irritated or overworked. Like the last two muscles I wrote about, the TM has a unique role to play. It attaches from the outside edge of the scapula (think very outer edge of your upper back) to

Happy Valentine’s Day 1011308200
Considering an experience gift? Some hints for finding a winner Choose an exciting adventure to share this Valentine’s Day
(BPT) — “Experience is one thing you can’t get for nothing,” Irish playwright Oscar Wilde once said. But Wilde, for all his wit, probably never envisioned the modern practice of giving an experience as a gift. This year give a present you and your sweetheart will enjoy and talk about for years to come: a memory, an experience to remember, not just an ordinary gift soon to be forgotten. This year, give a ticket for a hot air balloon ride or a soaring glider ride that will surprise and elate your valentine. And, you and your sweetheart can take your ride almost anywhere in the country, near home, or at 200 locations nationwide. Hot air balloon rides The crew chief will meet
your friends at the launch site, where they can watch the balloon being inflated. They ascend between 500 to 1,000 feet and float, with breathtaking views on every side, above the treetops and beneath the clouds, through valleys, winding rivers and lakes — wherever the wind goes. After landing, the adventure continues with a celebration toast of champagne or fruit, an old French tradition. Since each ride is led by a commercially certified, FAA-trained pilot, you can rest assured your loved ones will be secure and safe. The balloon
gondola holds up to six passengers. Your gift will provide an experience never to be forgotten. Soaring glider rides Or, how about a thrilling gift for that hard-to-please special person? Send them soaring quietly and peacefully above the clouds in a silent glider that seats the pilot and one or two passengers. The soaring glider ride for two lets you and your loved one experience the ride together. And, on the ride for one, your pilot will let you take the controls to fly the glider if you wish. Forget about the boring gifts and choose an excit-

Soaring Adventures of America, Inc., with more than 30 years of experience and a 100 percent safety record, offers gift tickets for Balloon, Glider and Skydiving rides you can use for up to two years at any of their 200 locations in the United States. Cost-effective and eco-friendly home improvements assumed to be costly undertakings, but there are several cost-effective ways to make a home more ecofriendly. Upgrade your appliances. A home improvement project does not have to require the use of a hammer and nails or the hiring of a contractor. A simple home improvement project like upgrading older appli-
ances, including the washer and dryer, to newer, more efficient models can give a home a fresh look while reducing energy consumption. That reduction in energy consumption is a byproduct of the stricter standards placed on manufacturers who must adhere to guidelines to produce products that are more ener-
gy-efficient. For example, the Natural Resources Defense Council notes that today’s energy-efficient refrigerators will use less than half the energy of models made as recently as 15 years ago. Add more insulation. Adding more insulation or replacing older insulation used to be an especially laborious process. However, in many instances insulation can now be added or upgraded to a home without any major
reconstruction or demolition, reducing the cost of the project considerably. Adding more insulation to a home can reduce energy consumption in the winter, when the home will feel warmer and allow you to keep the thermostat at a more reasonable number. Install highefficiency water fixtures. Few people think about how much water they consume over the course of a typical day, but the figures might be

Homeowners take on projects to improve their homes for a variety of reasons. Some may do so to make a home more functional, while others may do so to improve their home’s resale value. Some homeowners take on a home improvement project to make their homes more eco-friendly. Such projects are often mistakenly
eye-opening to those who hope to adopt a more ecofriendly lifestyle. According to the United States Geological Survey’s Water Science School, it’s generally accepted that the average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water each day. Showers seem to be especially wasteful, as older shower heads might be using as much as 5 gallons per minute, or 50 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Older fixtures that consume such massive amounts of water can be easily and affordably replaced with newer, more

Income Tax & Financial Services Tips for a bigger tax refund (BPT) — If you typically dread income tax time, remember this: Three out of four taxpayers receive a federal refund, and the average direct-deposited refund last year was $2,923. You have almost as many tax savings opportunities as last year, thanks to the fiscal cliffaverting tax changes passed in early January. In addition to extending the lower Bush-era income tax rates for nearly all taxpayers, the American Tax Relief Act made permanent or extended dozens of tax breaks. “This year’s tax law changes included thousands of dollars in tax benefits for working families, college students and homeowners in particular,” says Jessi Dolmage, TaxACT spokesperson. When you’re ready to file your 2012 federal tax return, due April 15, 2013, watch for these key tax benefits: Families — The child tax credit is worth up to $1,000
per eligible child, and is refundable for taxpayers with an earned income of more than $3,000. — Parents who work or attend school and pay for child care may qualify for the child and dependent care credit. The maximum amount is $3,000 per qualifying dependent or $6,000 for two or more qualifying dependents under the age of 13. — The earned income credit is for working taxpayers with low to moderate income. The refundable credit amount is based on filing status, number of qualifying children and income level. Families with three or more qualifying children could qualify for up to $5,891. — The refundability of the adoption credit has expired, but the credit is still available and worth up to $12,650 in qualified expenses for 2012. College and education — You could deduct up to $4,000 for tuition and fees paid in 2012. — Paying off student
loans? You may be able to deduct up to $2,500 in interest paid during 2012. — The American Opportunity Credit is worth up to $2,500 per student for post-secondary tuition, fees and course materials. — Contributing to a Coverdell Education Savings Account? You can exempt a maximum of $2,000 per student in annual contributions. Homeowners — If itemizing your deductions, you may be able deduct mortgage insurance premiums paid during 2012. — The nonbusiness energy property credit for qualified energyefficient home improvements (insulation, exterior windows and doors, central air conditioners, water heaters and other improvements) was extended for 2012 and 2013. If you’ve claimed this credit on previous year tax returns after 2005, you must subtract the collective amount from the $500 availabl Three out of four tax-
payers receive a federal refund e for 2012. Employees — Grade K-12 educators can deduct $250 in out-of-pocket expenses for classroom supplies. — You may be able to exempt employer-provided mass transit and parking benefits from your gross income. — If you itemize and have paid for work-related education, there’s a deduction for your costs paid minus any employer reimbursed amount. Hundreds more tax benefits are up for grabs on this year’s federal returns due April 15. When you’re ready to do your taxes, use these tips to make tax time easier and faster. 1. Gather all your tax forms (W-2, 1099, 1098, etc.), receipts and a copy of last year’s return first. Use TaxACT’s free return checklist at www.taxact. com/checklist. 2. Don’t spend too much on tax preparation. Online and downloadable software has all the guidance, forms and tools the
Three out of four taxpayers receive a federal refund. vast majority of taxpayers need to do their own taxes. Some of the solutions are even free. “All taxpayers can file their federal tax returns free with TaxACT Free Federal Edition,” says Dolmage. “TaxACT includes all e-fileable forms for simple and complex tax returns, and there’s instant and personalized help available every step of the way.” 3. According to the IRS, more than nine out of 10 refunds were issued in fewer than 21 days last year. You should expect the same this year. For the fastest possible refund, e-file and choose direct
deposit. You can track your federal refund with “Where’s My Refund” at www.irs.gov. 4. File your return by the deadline. If you need an automatic sixmonth extension, e-file Form 4868 and pay any taxes owed by the April 15 deadline to avoid late-filing penalties and interest fees. Finally, don’t procrastinate. Rushing can lead to costly errors. For more information about tax deductions and credits available on 2012 tax returns, visit www.irs. gov and www.taxact.com/ taxinfo. Laina Snyder joins the 1,000-point club Prior to the West Holmes game last week against Wooster, Lady Knights coach Lisa Patterson presented junior Laina Snyder with a game ball commemorating her 1,000th point. Snyder became the seventh player in West Holmes history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. She joined all-time leading scorer Lisa Cline (2,958), who amazingly scored more than 1,000 points in a single season, and that was before the 3-point shot, which helped No. 2 Christa Wells amass her 2,038 points during her illustrious career at West Holmes.
Other players to hit the 1,000point plateau at West Holmes include: Tina Morris (1,151), Lindsey Piar (1,136), Sarah Hammond (1,101) and Tristan Dye (1,087). Snyder is so unassuming and humble, she was embarrassed when they stopped the game
at Hiland High School during the Classic in the Country to announce her achievement. Her coach is happy for her to have put the landmark behind her. Now they can focus on the bigger picture, and that is another trip to Columbus as the tournament gets under way in less than two week. ——— I couldn’t believe my eyes Saturday at the Ohio Cardinal Conference wrestling tournament, when Ashland sophomore Tyler Wilson grabbed Max Rohskopf by the injured hand and pulled on it during their 145-pound
championship match. Rohskopf suffered the injury earlier in the match, but after a brief time out to tape the finger, he was back out on the mat. Now I realize that anything goes on the mat: you’ve got guys grabbing and squeezing and poking and pulling as they try to gain the upper hand, and an injury is a weakened area, so it is only smart to attack the weak if you want to win. Especially if you are the weaker opponent, which Wilson clearly was, as Rohskopf manhandled him essentially one-handed. Was he cheating by grabbing the injured hand and pulling?
It’s hard to say. It certainly wasn’t the sporting thing to do, that’s for sure. I think he just angered Rohskopf by doing so, which made it tougher on himself in the long run. Rohskopf clutched his fist in anger and was ready to pop Wilson, but fortunately, he was able to overcome the urge and simply pummeled him on the mat. My only hope is that Rohskopf’s injury doesn’t slow him down on his quest to become the third state champion in West Holmes wrestling history.

SPORTS FANS! Every NFL season produces its own “firsts,” and 2012 was no different. How about this one: In a 45-3 thrashing of Buffalo, the San Francisco 49ers became the first team ever to rush for at least 300 yards (311) and pass for at least 300 (310) in the same game. Another 2012 footnote - Houston running back Arian Foster totaled 5,000 yards from scrimmage in his 40th career game. Only two other players in history did it in fewer games. Any guesses? No big shock that one of them was Eric Dickerson (39 games). But the quickest might surprise you - Edgerrin James, in just 36 games. Early in the 2012-13 NBA season, the Toronto Raptors scored a total of five points in the entire fourth quarter - and won, 74-72 over Indiana. It marked the first time a team scored no more than five points in the last quarter of a game and still won since November of 1950, when the then - Fort Wayne Pistons posted a mere two points on their way to defeating the then - Minneapolis Lakers. Final score of that battle: 19-18, the lowest point total for one game in league history. When it comes to points - or lack thereof - the start of the 2012-13 NBA season stands out. Take November 7th, when 13 games were played. Not surprisingly, Kobe Bryant of the Lakers scored 29 points in a loss to Utah, the most by any player in the league that night. But amazingly, that marked the first time in NBA history that no player posted at least 30 points on a date when at least 12 games were played.

By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer Heading into the finals, only four points separated Ashland and West Holmes from second place. But after going 3-7 in finals matches, the Knights found themselves finishing a distant third in the Ohio Cardinal Conference wrestling championships on Saturday at Clear Fork. Lexington won the OCC, crowning seven champions along the way, piling up 254.5 points. The Arrows finished second (169) and the Knights third (156). Clear Fork finished fourth (122), followed by Madison (112.5), Orrville (92), Wooster (43) and Mansfield Senior (25). West Holmes crowned one champion, Max Rohskopf at 145. Rohskopf scored an 18-6 major decision over Ashland’s Tyler Wilson. He was named Outstanding Wrestler of the OCC tournament after pinning his way to the finals. The North Carolina State-bound senior dislocated his finger early in the championship match and still was able to best the Arrows’ sophomore. Wilson seemed to be poking a hornet’s nest when he grabbed Rohskopf by the injured and taped left hand and pulled on it. Rohskopf overcame the urge to take a swing at Wilson, and beat him soundly on the mat. “I don’t know if I’d have been able to show that kind of restraint,” said West Holmes coach
