To them that’s sort of their movie star. For a lot of them, it’s also reuniting with people they see each year and catching up,” she said. They all are made from a different line of fabric and each is unique to the business from which it came, Miller said. That’s the mystery, said Miller. “You see what the pattern is along the way, but you don’t see what it looks like together. Usually it’s something that reflects the store. Everyone’s a little different.” At the show, each business will have a booth and participants can find the supplies they need, including optional kits with the demo fabrics in them. “It’s a fun outing with friends,” she said. “It’s sort of like shoes for some people. They’re like fabric-a-holics. “There’s quilters who,

anything on our own.” The hop, she said, attracts both locals — “there are a lot of good quilt guilds in the area” — and tourists looking for a day or weekend getaway. Passports may be purchased in advance for $5 and on the day of the hop for $8. For more information, call Country Craft Cupboard at 330-893-3163.

You can do all five in the morning and then go shopping or get lunch. We women, we cluster. We don’t do

Community Shower the people you love with plastic bowls I will never forget the moment I first held the gun in my hand. The little scanner gun at the department store, of course. With my fiancé at my side, we entered the aisles, ready to point, aim, and shoot everything we could possibly need to help us start our life together. With our wedding shower being planned, we needed to give our family and friends an idea of what they should gift us at the party. Of all of the items we scanned, there was one such menial gift that meant the world to me. It was my own set of plastic mixing bowls. They weren’t fancy by any means, and I think the price tag barely

topped five dollars. They were practical and being a young bride-to-be who had never really lived on her own before, they seemed to encompass all that I wanted to be in my new role as wife and someday mother. I remember opening that very gift, which was given to me by my grandmother. I envisioned stirring bread dough and mixing Christmas cookies with my children. I pictured myself filling it with popcorn on movie night.

I knew exactly which empty cupboard I would store them in, because when you have nothing when you start out, big plastic mixing bowls are pretty important. And they should be. The history of wedding showers dates back quite far. They were given to allow fathers who could not afford their daughter’s dowry to collect gifts of household necessities so that the girl could marry. Other times in history the showering of gifts happened because the father did not approve of the marriage and would not offer a dowry. In the United States, urban people started having bridal showers as early as 1890, and by the 1930s,

even rural Americans were catching on to this ancient tradition. And now, in 2013, couples have taken to requesting presents for their new life together that include things like a hovercraft, a fishbowl toilet and beer kegs. In a recent news piece, The Today Show reported that more and more non-traditional things are making their way on to registry lists. The above mentioned is just a speckling, because I found that the further I watched the news clip, the angrier I got. Robots? Food and drink? Cash? I dare say that the tradition of wedding showers has gone down the drain. In my mind, I have

always thought that the showering of gifts was meant to be to supply the new couple with what they needed, not exorbitant gifts and outrageous whims of fancy. Most showers these days don’t even touch the bare essentials that I was so tickled with, and I find older brides-tobe requesting gourmet cooking devices and stemware nicer than anything I have ever owned and it just makes me kind of wish I was getting married again because those plastic bowls I have treasured for almost 14 years are getting a little worn out from the years of love and beater marks. So as we head into this season of weddings and

the showers that precede them, I can simply hope that the happy couples remember to keep in mind that a happy marriage is not built on lavish kitchenware and Egyptian cotton towels. And scanning a robot onto your computerized registry isn’t going to do anything for the good of the world, and that their guests are probably at home wishing they had a tenth of the nice things that will show up on that gift table. And finally, I hope that anyone who invites me to a wedding shower of their own is ready for a brand new set of plastic mixing bowls. If they’re lucky, I might just throw in a good cookie recipe and some popcorn kernels.

A ferry is built with the strength to bear its heavy load of cars; the passengers put their trust in the engineers and workmen who designed and built it. All it needs is fuel and an occasional repair to maintain its power. Likewise, God created us with the strength to bear life’s burden if we trust in His workmanship. As a ferry must refuel to maintain power, we must replenish our spirit with daily prayer and weekly worship. No burden is too heavy for Him; visit your house of worship – God will uphold you.

Send help!

Even if spring hasn’t sprung, here comes the sun Last weekend I gave myself a sunburn. Actually, upon closer examination, it’s more like four separate sunburns; one on each arm, one on each leg. And to tell you the truth, I’m not even sure the sunaffected areas would even meet the classical definition of sunburn — they really amount to little more than a faint blush of oppressed freckles. Nevertheless, my arms and legs bear the undeniable evidence the sun has not forgotten Ohio! I’m not going to act like I love winter, because I do not. I would not, however, wish to be without winter — especially the kind we have here in Ohio — because if we didn’t suffer the cold, snow, relentless northwest winds and sickeningly truncated days of December, January and February, we would never be able to fully appreciate that moment in March when the spell seems broken! The mild band of blush on each of my

limbs is a small price to pay for two straight days of mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s! Truthfully, I was so giddy to peel off layers of clothing it’s a wonder I didn’t leap right out of my skin. Fellow Ohioans flowed to the Great Outdoors like a thousand tiny icebergs calving from a great glacier. There were people everywhere doing everything and every one of them was wearing the same goofy grin. Bikers, boarders, runners and dog walkers took to the byways by the score. The low rumble of Harleys could be heard throughout the weekend and my brother, Jeff, rolled the tarp off of his classic Chevy and ran it around the block. Predictably, I rode my bicycle sans

tights and rolled my arm warmers down to my wrists on a jaunt that began in the morning and ended in the afternoon — thus the curious band of tan on each of my limbs. I fully embraced every outdoor activity I could think of in those few short days of glory, save for just a few. Yes, I washed the car. Yes, I swept the patio. Yes, I unplugged the downspout drains of the leaves I had left in the gutters when I “ran out of time” last fall. And yes, of course, I walked the dogs. I did NOT, however, venture into the fearsome and horrifying land formerly known as my backyard to begin the ceremonial, hours-long process of raking and scooping what remains of an entire season of used dog food. We’ll leave that for other, less glorious days. Early spring fishing is another activity I took a pass on this year for the simple reason that in all of the dozens and dozens of years of my life that

I’ve raced out to cast a line at the first inkling of ice-off I’ve never caught a single fish at this time of year. None. Never. Sure, there are able outdoorsmen whose methods and means pay great dividends in the early spring, but I have come to the sad realization that

I am not one of them. I, much like the species I have pursued in the past, tend to move about only seldom and sluggishly when the water is still winter cold. Alas for our glorious days of sun, come Monday, true to Ohio form, we were delivered

right back into a dayslong string of sputtering snowflakes and sideways wind, holding out hope that each dwindling gasp of winter will be shorter than the last and that March will somehow remember that it is obliged to leave us like a lamb.

HOME IMPROVEMENT 10108068

Go green and live comfortably all year long (BPT) — Milder temperatures and longer days mean winter is fast becoming a distant memory. However, environmentally conscious homeowners know that the arrival of warmer weather also means the likelihood of increased air-conditioner use and higher energy bills. With more green solutions available on the market, homeowners can make informed deci-

sions of how to “green” their home while living comfortably all year long and saving money. Simple and inexpensive changes, such as replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights, can make a noticeable impact on monthly energy usage. Some homeowners also consider installing small roof-mounted, solar hot water systems to minimize their carbon footprint and utility bills.

While these eco-solutions can help homeowners make the transition to living green, one area that homeowners usually do not consider is their home’s envelope — that is the home’s walls, windows, ceiling and floors. The U.S Department of Energy Savers suggests that air leakage from these areas can account for up to 40 percent of the energy lost by your home. When considering the amount of energy lost daily due to air leakage, homeowners are potentially losing thousands of dollars annually on air that is escaping their home. Although it may not

be top-of-mind, homeowners can tackle air leakage several ways. Double glazed windows, originally designed for extreme climates, are an increasingly popular and effective way to help minimize air leakage in a home. The U.S Department of Energy Savers says that air leakage through windows equates to around 10 percent, therefore considering high-performance, low-emissivity, double-glazed windows can help homeowners conserve energy, reduce heating and cooling bills as well as add value to their home, according to InsulationSmart.com.

idly to completely seal a home’s walls, floors and ceilings to prevent air leakage. Insulation experts from Icynene note that quality spray foam insulation can noticeably reduce heating and cooling costs, in some cases by up to 50 percent. Additionally, spray foam insulation helps minimize random airborne moisture and pollutants from entering the home, ideal for anyone currently suffering from seasonal allergies. Another effective consideration is replacing a home’s traditional batt insulation with a highperformance spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation, such as Icynene, is a valuable solution for homeowners who want to make ecofriendly improvements to their home. Able to perform in all climates, spray foam insulation in a home allows homeowners to use their heating and cooling systems less, and enables them to effectively control their indoor environments. Clever alternatives to traditional dyed Easter eggs mache. This ancient paper crafting technique uses recycled paper and a paste to create a hardened mold. Turn excess scraps of paper into delightful eggs put on display for the holiday. * Purchase corn starch eggs. Corn starch is used in everything from packing materials

to children’s craft products. Corn starch can be molded into solid forms or foam-type consistencies. Egg kits are sold with this green material. When Easter is over, the corn starch eggs can be put out for composting. Foam-type eggs may be dissolved with water. * Make edible eggs. Tra-

out of meringue as well. * Dough eggs:# Have the children get out their favorite modeling dough and craft multi-colored eggs as a fun, rainy-day project. Those who want the eggs to last can purchase actual clay from the craft store or whip up their own medium at home. After

drying, the eggs should be ready to paint. * Drained eggs:# Those interested in using the yolks and albumen from the eggs for cooking can poke small holes into the eggs and drain them. Then the remaining eggshells can be decorated and put on display.

ditional Easter eggs can be wasteful if the eggs are boiled and used entirely for display. Rather, make eggs that will be enjoyed and are not at risk of spoiling too soon after being on display. Gelatin-dessert eggs is one way to use the eggs after Easter, and creative people can try crafting eggs

Easter is a time when Christian families gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Religious customs abound on Easter, but a number of secular traditions have emerged as well. Perhaps the most popular secular tradition associated with Easter is the coloring of Easter eggs. Easter egg dyeing kits emerge in early spring. Consumers have a variety of alternatives to these kits at their disposal. There are some people who desire more environmentally friendly Easter eggs, so here are some creative and greener ideas for coloring eggs this year. * Wooden eggs: Visit a craft store and purchase wooden eggs that can be painted and decorated however you desire. The wooden eggs will be durable and can be stored away for use each and every year. Because they are made of wood, a naturally recyclable material, they are easy on the environment. * Consider natural dyes. Use different food items to create all-natural dyes for the eggs. Tea, fruit and vegetable juices -- even packaged drink mixes -- can be used to tint Easter eggs in various colors. Because you’re controlling the materials you use, you can ensure they are safe to use. * Experiment with papier

Income Tax & Financial Services Deductions that could dramatically cut your tax bill (BPT) — For all the talk about taxes during the “fiscal cliff” debate at the end of 2012, many people are still left wondering what it means to them as the April 15 filing date approaches. “‘Is it a big deal? Or is it business as usual?’ are questions I’m hearing,” says Scott Halliwell, a certified financial planner with USAA. “While many issues were resolved, a lot of taxpayers still aren’t sure how their tax returns and deductions are affected.” If you’re one of those people, brush up on these 10 deductions before tackling your tax return. They are worth reviewing, as they could lower your tax bill. 1. Traditional IRA contributions. You have until April 15 to contribute up

to $5,000 to a traditional IRA for 2012 and, if you qualify, deduct it on your tax return. Here are some guidelines: — If you were 50 or older on the last day of 2012, you can contribute up to $6,000. — If you (and your spouse if you’re married) weren’t covered by an employer’s retirement plan in 2012, you can generally deduct your contribution in full. — If you were covered by an employer plan, you can only take a full deduction if your modified adjusted gross income was $58,000 or less ($92,000 or less for married couples filing jointly). Your deduction is reduced if your modified adjusted gross income is higher. If your spouse was cov-

ered by a retirement plan at work but you weren’t, you’re eligible to take a full or partial deduction if your combined adjusted gross income was below $183,000. See IRS Publication 590 for more details. 2. Self-employed retirement plans. If you work for yourself, you can open a Simplified Employee Pension IRA by April 15 and deduct your contribution on your 2012 return. SEP IRAs may be an easy way to create your own retirement plan, and they can allow much higher contributions than traditional IRAs. Contributing to a SEP IRA does not exclude you from making an IRA contribution, but it may affect whether you can take a deduction for it. (A SEP IRA is considered an

employer-sponsored plan). 3. Mortgage interest. You’re allowed to deduct interest paid on your primary mortgage, as well as home equity loans, home improvement loans and lines of credit. In general, you may deduct interest on up to $1 million of primary mortgage debt and up to $100,000 of home equity balances. 4. State and local taxes. The federal government generally allows taxpayers to deduct property and income taxes paid to state and local governments. 5. Sales tax. If you didn’t pay much state income tax - or live in a state that doesn’t tax income at all - you may be able to choose to deduct sales tax instead. And you typically don’t need receipts - sim-

ply calculate an assumed amount using an IRS table or online calculator. 6. Charitable gifts. Make sure you have the right documentation. Cash contributions - regardless of the amount - require a canceled check or dated receipt. Any contribution of $250 or more requires bank or payroll deduction records or a written acknowledgement from the charity. Noncash contributions valued at more than $5,000 generally require an appraisal. 7. Education costs. Up to $2,500 in interest on loans for qualified higher education expenses may be deductible if your adjusted gross income is less than $75,000 ($150,000 if you’re married and filing a joint return). A portion of your tuition and fees

may be deductible if your adjusted gross income is $80,000 or less ($160,000 on a joint return). 8. Medical and dental costs. You may be able to deduct these expenses if they exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. 9. Health insurance. In general, self-employed taxpayers may be able to deduct all of their health insurance premiums. 10. Health savings accounts. If your family was covered by a highdeductible health insurance plan in 2012, you may be able to contribute up to $6,250 to a health savings account ($3,100 if it only covered yourself). Contributions are deductible, and similar to IRAs, you have until April 15 to contribute for the 2012 tax year.

Help is on the way from West Holmes’ reserves

West Holmes’ season ended one win shy of where the Knights had hoped, falling to fivetime champion Hathaway Brown 56-44 on Saturday afternoon at the Value City Arena. The Knights will graduate six seniors from the team that finished 28-2. West Holmes will have three-fifths of its starting lineup back next season, including first-team AllOhioan Laina Snyder. And, there are plenty of reinforcements on the way. The West Holmes JV team went 22-0 this season under the guidance of 11th-year coach Mike Molnar, and several of the reserves are ready to take the next step, having played several minutes on the varsity this season. “We had two sophomores (Alex Brown and Alex Starr) and three freshmen (Brittleigh Macaulay, Hannah Clark and Karisa Shriver) that were swing players,” Molnar said. “This was the first year where the JV spent the entire season practicing with the varsity. In the past, sometimes we would split up. This year, 80 percent of our practice time was spent with the varsity, and only 20 percent was spent going over our own

things and preparing for specific opponents.” Macaulay is a post player, while Starr and Clark have guard skills along with size. Shriver and Brown handled the point guard duties for the JV. “Karisa played the entire season on JV. Last year, AB played on pure skill,” Molnar said. “But now she understands the game and her responsibilities so much better.” Those five players, along with some of the others should make an impact on the varsity next season. Molnar says it is a treat to coach his own daughters. He has had three in the system, including his oldest daughter, Bethany; Emily, a junior who plays the point for the varsity and freshman, Natalie. “I think it makes you a better coach,” Molnar said. “Unfortunately for Bethany, she was like the guinea pig. I learned with her how to separate being a coach and being a father. “Carrie really helped me at home,” the coach continued. “She would tell me when I needed to be a dad and not be a coach.” But being a coach has its benefits. “It’s very satisfying as an assistant coach to think that you had a hand in helping the girls get here,” Molnar said.

Five-time champs get best of Knights again By ANDREW VOGEL Staff Writer The West Holmes girls basketball team got its wish — a date against four-time defending champion Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown. Ultimately, though, the Knights’ state title dream didn’t come true. The Knights trailed throughout Saturday’s Div. II state championship game and couldn’t knock off the reigning champs, falling 56-44. For the Blazers (23-6), it is their fifth straight crown, which sets a record of consecutive state titles. Hathaway Brown had previously shared the

mark with Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame, which won four straight from 200609, and Regina. The Blazers’ four senior starters walked off the floor having never lost a postseason game. Senior Nia Marshall, who finished with a gamehigh 17 points and set a Div. II state championship game record with 18 rebounds, said Saturday’s title had more meaning than the previous three. “This was different because this was the last 32 minutes,” she said. “It was emotional at the end when we knew we had See Pg. 24 — KNIGHTS

The Hiland Hawks pose with their Div. IV state runner-up trophy after falling to Fort Loramie 57-42 in Saturday’s championship game at the Value City Arena in Columbus.

Hawks come up short in state title bid By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer In the quest for the Div. IV state championship, the Hiland Hawks were unable to get over one final hurdle, getting tripped up by the Fort Loramie Redskins, who took home the trophy by finishing strong as they played flawlessly down the stretch to post a 57-42 victory over the Hawks. Hiland played like the Little Engine That Could, fighting an uphill battle from early on, getting as close as three points (4340) midway through the fourth quarter. But, like Hiland sharpshooter Regina Hochstetler said, the Hawks were unable to maintain the momentum. “I felt like the momentum started, but we just couldn’t keep it,” Hochstetler said. Sasha Goings was fouled inside and had a chance to cut the Redskins’ lead to one, but the junior misfired on both free throws with 3:26 to play. Darian Rose scored to extend the Redskins’ lead to five at 45-40. Hochstetler answered with a jumper to trim the lead to 45-42 with 2:22 to play, but Renae Meyer scored inside and the Hawks came up empty on their next five possessions. Fort Loramie finished off its first state championship victory by burying 10 straight free throws

down the stretch. “We had to start fouling. Obviously it wasn’t a 15-point game,” Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said. “We went to our smaller lineup to try and get ourselves back in it, scoring-wise. They did a good job of getting the ball inside to their posts. “I thought Fort Loramie’s pressure really made us feel uncomfortable throughout the game,” Schlabach added. “That’s probably the best defensive team we’ve seen all year. This is the type of game that comes down to a couple plays here and there. With two teams battling that are so similar, it came down to a couple plays. Their skilled kids inside, we had Jasmine (Goings) to guard one of them. We struggled with that second post player in there.” Fort Loramie’s tandem on the post, Paige Ordean and Meyer, combined to make 8-of-11 shots from the field to take advantage of their superior size and strength inside. Meyer finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Ordean added nine points. Fort Loramie’s point guard Rose added 19 points, including 8-for-8 from the free throw line, along with five rebounds and five assists. “Finally,” Fort Loramie coach Carla Siegel said, who, after six years as a player, five as an assis-

tant coach and 14 as head coach, can finally raise the championship trophy. “I can’t say enough about how our team played today,” Siegel added. “Renae with her double-double. And Darian Rose makes it happen for everybody. When the game’s on the line, she rises to the next level.” Hiland fell behind early and the Hawks were never able to get over the hump. Hochstetler would make one or two shots to pull the Hawks close, but the Redskins would answer each Hiland run with a one of their own. Hochstetler paced the Hiland offense with 23 points. Unfortunately, she didn’t get much help. Emily Yoder and Kendra Schlabach were next in line with five points apiece for the Hawks, who wrap up their season with a 26-4 ledger. “We had a tough time getting open looks for Regina and Kendra (Schlabach),” coach

Schlabach said. “It’s tough to play a game like that when you don’t shoot a free throw in the first half.” The Redskins took a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. Four different players scored for the Hawks, including a triple from Emily Yoder, while Fort Loramie got 3-pointers from Jessica Boerger and Rose. Fort Loramie threatened to blow the Hawks out, scoring the first four points of the second quarter to double up Hiland 18-9. After Hiland missed three shots inside the paint, the Redskins struck again to take a 20-9 lead early in the second quarter. Hochstetler buried a 3-pointer, made a steal and scored on a short jumper to ignite an 8-0 run by the Hawks, capped by a Kendra Schlabach 3-pointer to pull Hiland back to within three at See Pg. 24 — HAWKS

Knights

(Continued From Page 23) our fifth one in the bag and this was the last time we’d play together.” With nearly all of the fans inside Value City Arena decked out in red and blue, Saturday’s state championship was a neutral site in name only. As a result, Hathaway Brown coach Paul Barlow said one of the most crucial moments was during the opening tip, when the Blazers weathered the Knights’ early momentum and staked out a 14-5 lead 6 minutes into the contest. “I knew they had the huge crowd and were going to play with a lot of adrenaline,” said Barlow. “We survived the early adrenaline push, showed some leadership on the floor and walked out of there with our fifth straight state title.” After seven straight trips to the Final Four, West Holmes coach Lisa Patterson, whose team closed the year at 28-2, said HB simply has all the intangibles to continually come out on top on the state’s biggest stage. “They know how to win basketball games,” she said. “Otherwise, they wouldn’t have won five in a row.” While HB led by at least seven for all but one possession in the second and third quarters, the Knights cut the margin to 35-32 after Mallori Vess punctuated an 8-0 run by hitting both free throws with 6:32 left on a one-and-one attempt after grabbing a miss by Marshall and getting fouled. After that

II state runner-up trophy after falling to Hathaway Brown 56-44 in Saturday’s championship game at the Value City Arena in Columbus. point, though, the Blazers went on a 9-0 roll as West Holmes missed its next four field goals and committed two turnovers. HB quickly pushed it back to a three-possession game with a layup and two free throws from Marshall, then pushed its lead to 42-32 with 3 minutes to go when Marshall split a pair at the line and Stephanie Poland converted another layup. Rachelle Morrison, who had a game-high 13 points for the Knights, then missed a 3-pointer on West Holmes’ next possession, while Vanessa Smith answered with two more free throws to give HB its largest lead of the game (44-32) and all but seal the outcome. What made the Blazers’ run even more impres-

SPORTS FANS! How much has the National Football League changed in 30 years? When it comes to weight, the answer is a hefty amount. Get this: When the Washington Redskins won the championship in 1983, they had just one player on their roster who weighed more than 300 pounds. One month ago, when Baltimore defeated San Francisco to capture the NFL crown, the Ravens had 24 players who topped 300 pounds on the scale – nearly half of their 53-man roster. Many National Hickey League teams tried winning back the hearts of their fans after settling the 2012 lockout by giving away free food and selling discounted merchandise in their first few home games. How much? Take the Pittsburgh Penguins as an example. In their four-game promotion, the Pens gave away for free 20,380 hamburgers, 22,118 chicken sandwiches, 22,528 hot dogs, 26,633 pretzels, 33,289 nachos, and 52,142 soft drinks. They also sold at half price 18,950 T-shirts, 8,776 hats and 8,680 jerseys. Among the four major North American team sports, the one with the lowest percentage of draft choices that make it to the top level is baseball, followed by hockey, with football and basketball the highest. That stands to reason, because MLB and the NHL draft more rounds and form a broader base – all the way down to high school – whereas the NFL and the NBA draft only college players and in fewer rounds. Of the 6,080 players drafted by major league teams from 2008-2011, only 206 had made it to the majors as of the end of the 2012 season – less than three percent.

sive was the fact that the 6-foot-1 Smith, who has committed to play at Princeton next year and was the Div. II Player of the Year, was on the bench for the early part of the fourth quarter when her team began to make its run. At that point, though, HB locked down on the perimeter to effectively clinch the state title. “I looked at Nia and said, ‘You’re going to shut down (Laina) Snyder and I’ll work on the guards,” said Stephanie Solano, who finished with nine points and is one of six seniors on the roster. “We had to pressure them on defense so they couldn’t cut the gap.” After Snyder, a firstteam All-Ohioan, put up 26 points and 19 rebounds against Dayton Chaminade-Julienne in Thursday’s semifinal, she was limited to eight points and six rebounds on Saturday. Much of that was because she was bottled

up by Marshall, who will play at Cornell University next fall, as the 6-footer’s strength and positioning created fits for the junior post. Smith and the 6-4 Poland also added to Snyder’s troubles. “Every single time I was anywhere near where I usually am,” said Snyder, “there were three people taller and bigger than me.” It also didn’t help that Snyder picked up her second foul early in the second frame. “(Marshall’s) one of the strongest players I’ve played against,” said Snyder. “It’s hard to keep battling when (you’re in foul trouble). After the second you have to be careful. Sometimes you have to back down so you don’t get that third foul and they took advantage.” Snyder wasn’t the only one who battled foul trouble. Smith, who was the team’s leading scorer this season at 16.5 points per game, also picked up

her second early in the second quarter and had to come out of the game with the Blazers nursing a double-digit lead. The problem for the Knights was they couldn’t cut into the deficit with Smith on the bench. Marshall picked up the slack with eight points during the frame while West Holmes also had five turnovers. West Holmes was limited to 38-percent shooting (7-for-19) in the first half. Fittingly, Barlow said defense has been his team’s calling card, especially in the last few weeks. “Yesterday I thought about playing some zone,” he said, “but when it comes down to it we said, ‘We’re going to play half-court man — come and beat us.’ In the tournament again this year defense has set the tone.” While the Knights knocked off HB 49-45 in the team’s earlier meeting in December by using its depth to wear them down,

Patterson said her team wasn’t able to do that Saturday and they were outexecuted, as West Holmes was held to a lower field goal percentage than HB (45 percent to 40), as well as committing more turnovers (15-10) and being outrebounded (30-27). “They don’t have a deep bench and we do,” said Patterson. “We were able to wear them out but you can’t do that in a state championship game where there’s 90-second media timeouts. We had to limit our mistakes and take it at them. That was the difference.” After a stellar season by her own club, Patterson could only tip her cap to the team that simply made more plays. “They have everything that makes them a great ballclub to a higher level than we do,” she added. “It’s the same makeup — their athletes are just a little stronger. Today they had the type of game they needed to have.”

Hawks (Continued From Page 23) 20-17. The teams traded baskets and the Redskins held a 22-19 edge at intermission. Hiland cut it to 22-21 to start the second half on a Schlabach score, but the balanced attack of the Redskins built the lead back up to nine (32-23). A Sasha Goings bucket and a free throw from Megan Beachy pulled the Hawks back to 34-28 heading into the final frame. A bucket by Boerger and a threepoint play by Ordean helped Fort Loramie build a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers from

Hochstetler helped Hiland get within five (41-36), but again the Redskins were able to withstand the charge by the Hawks. “I thought our girls did a good job of executing our offense and attacking the basket,” Siegel said. The Redskins finished the game shooting 20-of-42 from the floor and 15-of-17 from the foul line. “I kept telling the kids that they were not going to quit,” Siegel said. “Berlin Hiland was a seasoned team that was going to keep fighting back. Playing in the championship game against the No. 2 team in the state of Ohio, I thought we did what we needed to do.” And that was good enough to

win. The Redskins finish the season 27-3 with the school’s first state championship. It was a tough loss for Hiland, because the Hawks lose three seniors, including Schlabach. “Kendra is one of the most unselfish leaders we’ve ever had in the program,” coach Schlabach said. “We’ll miss her. She’s a spiritual leader for our kids. “This group has given it their all,” the coach added. “I never doubted that these kids have given me everything they could the entire year. For that I’m real proud. For that, it would’ve been nice to finish with a championship. I feel really bad for them.”
