Community SHMEE-gooss DIN-gooss makes me SM-ile There are some things in life that leave me wide-eyed and jawdropped, not because of their incredibility, but rather because they are new. “How could I have possibly lived on this earth for 35 years and not known that?!?” I have been known to shout, while shaking my fists and knocking my head. And that was just the reaction I had when I heard about Smigus Dyngus. Because if there are two things I love, it’s Polish heritage and water fights. The thought of combining them both in the honor of spring nearly makes my head spin. (There is a casserole involved, too, but we’ll save that for later.) Easter traditions are dear to my heart, mostly because revolving around
the amazing food we eat. Easter Sunday is a veritable feast of kielbasa, babka (sweet Easter bread), ham, soft cheese, eggs, and enough beet horseradish to wash it all down. Before eating the eggs, we all choose our favorite one and tap the ends together, to see who will get their Easter wish, similar to a turkey’s wishbone. This Polish tradition has trickled into many other cultures because it’s fun. And fun is good. But there’s another Polish tradition I hope makes its way to every happy household. It’s
called Smigus Dyngus and it’s a celebration on Easter Monday. Boys are supposed to douse the girls with buckets of water, where the water signified good rains for the agricultural season. Girls could make them stop by offering painted eggs to the boys, signifying a good harvest and healthy offspring. It is said that attractive girls would be continually drenched throughout the day. There is also a tradition of boys switching girls with the branches of pussy willow trees, but of course, I’m not telling my kids about that part. Apparently, on Easter Tuesday (or the day after Smigus Dyngus), the girls have their opportunity to seek sweet revenge on the boys by firing up their own super soakers. Personally, I don’t think

I could wait that long. If someone woke me from a deep slumber with a bucket of water, an egg would be the last thing they would get. ... Smigus Dyngus is celebrated in some American cities as Dyngus Day, with Buffalo, N.Y., hosting the largest one. The streets are lined with polka bands, delicious foods, and there’s just a giant water fight, with both genders equally soaking each other. What a fabulous way to welcome spring and nearby summer which has its fair share of water fights ’round these parts. Especially if mom is in charge of the hose. This year, I plan to indulge a bit in my newfound tradition strictly for educational purposes. I plan on reviewing the true meaning of Easter

1 pound smoked kielbasa, sliced ¼-inch thick 4 ounces shredded Swiss cheese ¼ cup breadcrumbs Heat oven to 350°. Lightly coat a ceramic casserole dish with cooking spray. In small bowl, mix together soup, onion, and mustard and set aside. In casserole dish layer half the sauerkraut, half the kluski, followed by half of the kielbasa. Easter is celebrated in the springtime when flowers bloom anew and robins lay their eggs. It is a time we celebrate renewal of life…Jesus rising from the grave…His rebirth and Ascension into Heaven. 1 Peter 1:3 assures us, “By His great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” This Easter let us praise God for the sacrifice of His Son and dedicate our lives anew in service to the Lord.

Cotton Patch Gospel to be presented at BCF There’s something special that happens when you walk into a room filled with the aroma of your favorite food. Your stomach growls to be satisfied. Your taste buds are tempted. What started out as simple ingredients have come together to form a mouthwatering dish. “Cotton Patch Gospel” is a
musical that is just such a dish! This musical uses well known ingredients like the greatest story every told — the gospel — adds some great bluegrass music, a smattering of southern drawl, and is sprinkled with humor. This all comes together as a recipe for success to be presented Easter weekend at
Berlin Christian Fellowship. This musical is a re-telling of the book of Matthew set down south in Gainesville, Ga. Original bluegrass and folk music composed by Harry Chapin, and script written by Tom Keys, is all performed by local talent. Berlin Christian Fellowship believes the arts reflect a part
of God’s heart and character. His creativity is revealed through people as they use the gifts He has given and those gifts are enjoyed by others. Performances are Saturday, March 30 at 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday morning at 10. Both performances will be at the Berlin Christian Fellow-
ship church, 5382 County Road 201. Admission is free, with an offering to benefit the BCF arts program and youth missions. Childcare will be available at both performances for infants and toddlers. Call the church office at 330-893-3115 for more information. “Something’s brewin’ in Gainesville”!

The newest additions include a deli, bakery, bulk food store, creamery, open-pit barbecue and a hot and cold buffet. In addition to Lillian’s Sweet Cafe, there are many new food offerings for 2013. “It’s been a wonderful journey. We’ve grown and learned a lot.” Betty Zimmerman, owner, Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market serving lunch plates such as roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetable and slaw or turkey, dressing, noodles and corn. Also new is the Amish Country Bakery serving varieties like monkey bread and cinnamon rolls, as well as cookies, bars, cakes, pies and fry pies. The Bulk Food Deli will also be expanding for 2013 with an even larger selection of Walnut Creek Cheese products, includ-
ing produce, beef jerky, cheese, Trail bologna, jams, jellies, candies and jarred goods. Tommy’s Jerky & Smokie Outlet and a larger sunroom eatery were also added. The flea market has not only expanded, but also offers entertainment and services for everyone who comes to the market. “We have live entertainment every weekend and special events throughout the season,” said Tango. These range from live music and Elvis impersonators to “An Artistic Experience at the Market” featuring local artisan’s work, kids day and give-aways, all held throughout the market or on the outdoor sightseeing deck, which overlooks a view of the surrounding valley. “You can sit up there and eat and when it’s nice outside, we’ll put the entertainment up there,” said Tango. Special entertainment will be held each Saturday throughout the season, beginning on March 30 with the String-A-Longs. Weekly demonstrations include chainsaw carving, quilting and sewing. With so much to offer, it’s an experience like no other, said Tango. Surrounded by Amish Country, the view, the friendly atmosphere and the family focus all contribute to this phenomenon. And it’s not just shopping. The flea market offers a playground for children, beautiful landscaping, live
music and demonstrations. two 8-seater club car shuttles provide free transportation to and from the parking lot and the flea market’s front door. “They run all day long everyday,” said Tango. The flea market also offers parking for tour buses. A small petting zoo featuring peacocks, roosters, pheasants and — coming this year — alpacas, keeps children occupied, while sports lovers can check out the big screen television constantly tuned to athletic events. “We are very familyoriented,” said Tango. Before opening the Amish Flea Market, the family gained 15 years of prior flea market experience “so we have an idea of what people are looking for,” she said. The flea market staff is also like family, as each member either has a business at the market or is a past vendor. “We like the family atmosphere, everyone is very friendly,” said Tango, noting that vendors are local and from out-of-state. “They come from as close as 15 minutes away to as far as two hours away.” The Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market is located at 1900 State Route 39, Sugarcreek. tries the term “soy drink” is commonly used. Too bad the United States hasn’t passed such a law! Fortified rice “milk” is a safe alternative for anyone who is lactose intolerant. It is low in fat and contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. However, just one cup contains 25 grams of carbs (cow’s milk has about twelve (12) so it isn’t waist line friendly. It is very low in protein, just one gram per serving compared with eight grams of protein in cow’s milk. It is light and watery with a subtle sweetness. Manufacturers and suppliers of rice milk are listed from China. Hemp “milk” is thicker and creamier than skim cow’s milk, with an earthy taste. It is cholesterol-

free, low in saturated fat, and a Vegan’s delight because it is rich in antiinflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. The amount of protein in hemp milk varies, some brands have four grams per cup while others have less. Hemp seeds are high in fat, so servings should be limited. The biggest drawback is the funky taste! The hemp plant, even for culinary purposes, is illegal to grow in the United States. Almond “milk” is another option for the lactose intolerant. It has no saturated fat or cholesterol and just 40 calories in an unsweetened cup. But do not expect to get the same benefits you would get from eating raw almonds. Almond
milk loses many of the nut’s nutrients in production, so it offers hardly any protein and must be fortified in calcium to reach the levels found in cow’s milk, and popular sweetened options are loaded with sugar. It is thin and watery with a nutty flavor. Goat’s milk is good at protecting bones and muscle and is high in calcium and potassium and provides nearly 39 per cent of the RDA for phosphorus, which helps build strong bones. It contains less lactose than cow’s milk, but is still a no-go for anyone with more than a mild intolerance. It contains 6.5 grams of saturated fat and nearly 170 calories per cup (over 80 more
than found in one cup of skim cow’s milk). Today these alternative “milks” sit in the dairy case right beside our cow’s milk, competing for the consumer’s attention and dollars. They are widely advertised. Vegans promote them and some doctors recommend them. It is very important that the consumers know the facts about the “milk” they are purchasing. Cow’s milk is a standout source of calcium and protein and cow’s milk still does a body good. The word “milk” implies that a product is good and healthy for consumers. We know that is so, when the milk comes from dairy cows!

Soy milk contains very little digestible calcium. There is no medical benefit to using soy milk instead of cow’s milk or human breast milk for babies. Sitting right along side the cow’s milk are several alternative kinds of so called “milk.” SILK is one of the more popular ones, and it is a beverage made from soybeans. It is produced by soaking dry soybeans and grinding them with water. According to advertisements, SILK contains zero cholesterol, lactose or dairy. It contains about the same proportion of

Alas, if there is to be such an ending for either man or Jeep, one thing is for sure, the two of us will not be together. might sometimes seem from these writings, the truth is that when it comes to spending money I’m about as impulsive as a pounded nail. My people were mystified, even dumb-founded, that I would have hauled-off and purchased something so seemingly “fancy,” not to mention so utterly impractical. Holmes 4-H’ers selling Fenton beads to raise money for new fairgrounds Local 4-H supporters can show their 4-H pride with a new, custom-designed Fenton Art Glass bead. The bead creation was initiated by the Rim Rock Riders 4-H Club of Holmes County, and the bead itself was designed by Fenton artisans. The club is using the bead as a focal point of its fundraising campaign to raise money for the new Holmes County Fairgrounds being constructed at Harvest Ridge. The beads are being sold for $35 each, and the club will donate 100 percent of the profits from the sales to the fairgrounds. The club’s goal it to be able to donate a minimum of $1,300 to the fairgrounds.
The bead features a Fenton core with a white glass background and the word “4-H” and the 4-H clover alternating around the bead. It is designed to be worn on a variety of bead jewelry items, including bracelets and watches. Like all Fenton glassware, the bead is made in the U.S. Rim Rock Riders is accepting bead orders for immediate delivery through individual club members, via email at jhouin@mac. com, or by phone at 330-763-1017.

Bucks beat All-Stars for 17th straight year as March celebrates Developmental Disabilities month in Ohio. The Bucks had their inside and outside game going on early, as the one-two punch of Lester Endlsey and Dennis Hershberger dominated inside, and Steve Miller swished one from long range to help the Training Center team pull out to a 16-8 lead after the first quarter. WKLM radio personality Matt Croy scored four points for the AllStars and West Holmes coaching staff representative Ben Ogi also scored four to account for the All-Stars eight. In the second quarter Jason Miller of Holmes County Fire Station No. 1 hit a 3-pointer and added a bucket inside to spark the Stars. Walnut Creek Mennonite pastor Dan Owolabi and Hummel Insurance Group’s Dave Coil also

By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer For the past 16 years, Community All-Star coaches Mark Lonsinger, on-air personality of the Voice of Holmes County, and attorney Sam Steimel have tried to figure out a way to top the Holmes County Bucks. On Tuesday night in the Dungeon at West Holmes, the Bucks extended the longest losing streak in Holmes County to 17 years with a 51-42 victory over the Community All-Stars. “It may be the longest losing streak, but it’s the best game all year,” Steimel said. “Look at all the people here. The gymnasium is full. It just shows how much the community supports the Bucks and the Training Center.” The annual Community All-Star game caps off the season for the Bucks
scored inside as the All-Stars trimmed the Bucks’ lead to three by halftime. But Leroy Kuhns kept the Bucks ahead with his soft touch from the outside. Blake Day added a couple buckets inside to help the Training Center team hold on to a 24-21 lead. Every time the AllStars got close, Village Motors’ Mike Kinsey would get whistled for traveling or three seconds, much to the delight of the fans, as the officiating and the fan support was definitely one-sided. Endsley got hot again in the third quarter to help the Bucks build a 34-25 lead after three quarters. Endsley, “The Big L,” led the Bucks with 14 points, while Hershberger chipped in 10. Owolabi used his superior size and skills to help the All-Stars mount a comeback, cashing in an alley-oop from player-coach Lonsinger. Owolabi, a former Dalton High School and Malone star, finished with 10 points to lead the All-Star offensive effort. Ogi finished with eight points and Croy chipped in seven to lead the AllStars attack, but it was too much Hershberger and Endsley for the AllStars to overcome. Game official Ron Hay thanked the many members of the Community All-Stars for their continued support and wished them better luck next year.

SPORTS FANS! College basketball supporters are known to be as fanatic as they come, especially in America’s heartland. Want proof? Before Louisville and Kentucky squared off in the 2012 Final Four, a 68-year-old Kentucky backer was receiving a dialysis treatment when he got into a “discussion” about the likely outcome of the game with a 71-year old Louisville fan who was waiting his turn for dialysis. Next thing the nurses knew, punches were being thrown and the police had to be called. Kentucky win the game. No word on who won the fight. Officials in several sports are cracking down on players who fake being victimized by hits form their opponents - “diving” in the NHL, “flopping” in the NBA - in short, trying to draw a penalty for a foul by pretending to take an otherwise punishable blow. But sometimes the refs get it wrong. In 2012, Belgian soccer player Julien Lecomte was given a red card - meaning he was ejected from the game for faking - while unconscious on a stretcher. Turns out he suffered a concussion and three displaced vertebrae. Did you hear about the Pepsi that cost an athlete more then three-quarters of a million dollars? No joke. Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldhino had an endorsement deal with Coca-Cola, but during a press conference in 2012 he sat down and without thinking took a sip from a can of Pepsi that was in front of him. Coke executives promptly cancelled the endorsement deal, costing Ronaldhina $760,000.

Snyder, Patterson pace OCC accolades West Holmes’ Laina Snyder and Orrville’s Hannah Plybon were clearly the top two players in the Ohio Cardinal Conference. When the OCC girls basketball coaches named their all-conference team, the two stood out overall all the others. Snyder and Plybon were named coPlayers of the Year, and it actually is the s e c o n d POY honor for both standouts. Plybon, a senior, was named Snyder OCC POY in 2011, while Snyder, a junior, took home the award last year. After both enjoyed stellar individual seasons and led their teams to tremendous success, they’ll share the top honor this year. Plybon led the conference with nearly 25 points per game and Snyder averaged a doubledouble every night with 15 ppg and 12 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, West Holmes coach Lisa Patterson, who led the Knights to an unblemished OCC ledger and their third straight conference crown, was named Coach of the Year. West Holmes also saw Rachelle Morrison and Emily Molnar make the OCC first team. West Holmes’ Paiten Strother was a secondteam, with the Knights Justice Wright and Mallori Vess honorable mention. On the boys side, Mansfield Senior’s Keon Johnson was named Player of the Year, while Lexington’s Scott Hamilton took home Coach of the Year. West Holmes’ Brady Arnold was a firstteam selection, while on the second team were Knights Gabe Snyder and Michael DeWitt. West Holmes’ Brock Macaulay and Ryan Neer were honorable mention selections. The Lady Knights finished 28-2 and Div. II State runners-up, while the WHHS boys team ended with an 18-7 record.
