Community The world’s last Hootenanny Cake (as we know it) Helping my parents move, my daughter was assigned to clean out the pantry. Like most parents of that generation, I find my mom has an ongoing love affair with out-ofdate food. We have been visiting and discovered food that was outdated when we were first married, almost 14 years ago. “Pickles don’t go bad,” said my dad. “But it’s cloudy. And they’re white.” It’s not always that bad, but it seems that there are plenty of packaged foods hanging around longer than the date on the side says it should. My daughter thinks this is hilarious. Every time we visit my parents, she plays this little game where she finds the most
out-of-date item because she gets such a kick out of it. So when my mom told her to go through the entire pantry, she was giddy. Laughing and tossing things out, there was barely enough to fill a box that was still technically edible. But then she pulled out a box of pudding. “Look at this one, mom. It looks so old-fashioned, I’m not even looking at the date.” And with those words, she sent it careening across the room toward the trash recep-

tacle, and just like in the movies, my life switched into slow motion as I screamed “noooooo!” and I’m pretty sure I dove and caught it and landed in a perfect martial arts roll. Because it wasn’t just pudding. My daughter had found the last box of Royal Instant Toasted Coconut Pudding probably on Earth. My dear grandmother who just celebrated her 90th birthday is famous for her Hootenanny Cake, which uses the above-mentioned type of pudding. I realize there are plenty of other recipes for Hootenanny Cake out there, but my grandma’s recipe calls for THIS pudding. The company sadly stopped
making it a few years ago. How do we know they don’t make it anymore? We wrote. We called. We begged and pleaded with the Royal Pudding Company. My grandparents even sent them a copy of her recipe. Alas, it was all for naught because they just said they were sorry and sent us coupons for inferior pudding flavors. Unbeknownst to her, for years my mother had had this box of prized pudding hiding in her pantry, back behind the old pickles and multiple cans of chicken broth, stashed under the boxes of JELL-O. And after catching it, I held it up in the air and screamed for my mom until she came running. From there we
danced in circles and laughed and yelled for my father and called my grandparents on the phone and the two of us were giddy past all reason. Naturally my daughter thought we had completely lost our minds. But she doesn’t understand yet at her young age of 11 that something like a cake has magic powers, and this cake has powers beyond anything she has ever seen. When cakes are served, special things happen. People gather. People celebrate. My uncle will rise from a slumber well before he is ready for a piece of cake for breakfast, and everyone knows that skipping birthday cake is like bringing a
boatload of bad luck upon yourself. Cakes mean coffee, and coffee means conversation, and conversation brings people closer together in a way that magnifies the love that makes this world go round. If that all doesn’t sound amazing enough, my Grandma’s Hootenanny Cake can do all that. And then some. Before it’s even out of the oven. My parents and grandparents live out of state, and so this year we traveled to celebrate her birthday. Upon our arrival, she had waiting for us a delicious dinner and the very last Hootennany Cake that she made with her 90-year-old hands. Never has it tasted sweeter.

Once upon a time a boy wandered deep into the woods. As the sun sank behind the trees, the boy panicked, not knowing which direction to go. Discouraged, he began to lose hope until suddenly he remembered…on his keychain was a small glowing compass his father had given him. Never used, it was nearly forgotten…always there, it was a guide to safety. Our Heavenly Father has given us a guide to safety…the light of His Word can be our guide as we wander through forest of life. Visit your house of worship each week and let God help you find your way out of darkness. Weekly Scripture Reading Isaiah Isaiah Isaiah 45:1–25 48:1–22 49:1–26

Scent of the season can bring a tear to the eye Budding trees, daffodils, freshly-turned earth — we’ve finally arrived at that magical post-winter moment when the windows are flung open and the whole world washes in to remind our senses that “spring meadow”— scented fabric softener smells nothing like the real thing. If it did, it would have to include a splash of freshly-spread cow manure and a lightly wafting hint of skunk essence. Manure is as welcome a part of the atmosphere in these parts as oxygen itself. We know where our food comes from. The skunk on the other hand. ... Sadly, the hint of skunk that floats across field and farm at this time of year can almost always be traced to a scene of tragedy on a nearby roadway where the details are laid-out in stark black and white. The situation is almost always the same: Car startles skunk; skunk deploys defense mechanism; car flattens skunk and continues on its way. In nearly every case,
noses in the immediate proximity of the incident suffer much more severely than that of the driver of the assaulting car. The driver continues on, wind blasting the scent away from his undercarriage at a speed of 60 miles per hour. Meanwhile, back at the scene of the “skunking” the world gasps, immersed in a heinous cloud of garlic bleach. There simply are not enough adjectives in the English language to appropriately describe the all-consuming experience of finding oneself near the epicenter of a skunking. (The skunk, of course, is the biggest loser in all of this, but I’m working toward a point here.) It’s clear the Lord’s intention in equipping the skunk was to keep all
other creatures a respectful distance away. I have no problem with this and do my best to abide. My pets, however, seem unaware of this intention. Furthermore, they seem to be incapable of learning from their mistakes! We’ve been skunked before, and I’m sure we’ll be skunked again — especially this spring since I seem to have inadvertently “invited” a skunk into my world. Last week I wrote of the mob of English sparrows who have set up camp in and near my yard and have organized daily assaults on my bird feeders for the past three months. In their wake they’ve kicked bushels of cracked corn to the ground. My cat seems to have kept a nice handle on the rodent population and the sparrows seem loath to peck at the ground for their meal, so into the void has waddled the omnivorous bane of my olfactory existence. Springtime has never smelled so “interesting.”
Events, club dues and fair pen decorations were discussed as well as the possibility of a second fundraiser. Speaker Wendy Long, a registered nurse, talked about health care and the importance of handwashing and sanitizing as well as other ways to stay healthy, including being vaccinated. Pledges were led by
Beth Klein and Grant Miller. Klein took roll call asking members to answer with their favorite flavor of ice cream. The meeting was attended by 10 members, four advisers and three guests. Refreshments were provided by Beth and Michael Klein. The next meeting will be April 23.

How to prevent soil erosion Homeowners who spend time tending to their landscape are increasingly looking for eco-friendly ways to maintain their lawns and gardens. Homeowners who once relied on potentially harmful pesticides to craft a lush lawn now prefer ways that don’t leave such a significant carbon footprint. Preventing soil erosion is one way to incorporate conservation into lawn and garden care. Conservation
is one of many environmental practices aimed at preserving the planet’s natural resources, which include soil. Preventing soil erosion is easy and can be accomplished in a number of ways. *Don’t overwater. Some may assume that keeping soil as damp as possible keeps it healthy. However, overwatering the soil can cause runoff that washes the soil away. In addition, overwatering the soil can degrade it
and contribute to erosion. Instead of overwatering, keep the soil moist but don’t overdo it. If you’re having trouble keeping soil moist, consider laying down some mulch, which helps retain moisture and deliver nutrients to the soil that keep it healthy. * Plant trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs are friends to soil, providing shelter while their roots keep the soil in place and prevent it from eas-
ily blowing away on a windy day. It also helps soil from washing away when warm weather arrives and the landscape must be watered on a daily basis. * Create runoff barriers. Runoff barriers are edges that can be made of brick, stone or other materials that help reduce runoff. Many homeowners install runoff barriers along sidewalks and driveways to ensure the soil does not spill out onto the pavement, but
these also help the soil as much as they help to keep walkways and other areas free of soil and looking tidy. * Consider leaving some grass around the garden. Tillage is the process of preparing land to grow crops. While many homeowners don’t view their weekend gardening as growing crops, similar principles apply whether you’re growing crops on a farm or just a few vegetables in the
backyard. One such principle is conservation tillage, which means leaving a portion of vegetation in the ground instead of stripping everything away before planting. For home gardeners, consider leaving a small amount of grass around the garden to keep the soil within the garden’s boundaries. It’s a principle similar to installing runoff barriers, and it can be just as effective at preventing soil erosion.

Solid retirement planning for Generations X, Y (BPT) — When it comes to making plans for retirement years, today’s younger workers are struggling to make heads or tails of all the resources and products available to them through work and personal investments. Younger professionals who fit into the Gen X and Gen Y categories also are not taking advantage of financial professionals, who can provide information and education on planning for a secure retirement, according to 2013 research by LIMRA, a research, consulting and professional development organization. Such lack of financial acumen is a challenge for young adults who face a challenging job market as many continue to struggle paying back student loans and establishing both short and long term savings while balancing the needs of their growing families. Working with a trusted financial professional should be a priority for Gen X and Gen Y mem-
bers, says Jeff Duncan, a financial professional with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) who concentrates his practice in planning for retirement. “As the younger generations approach retirement age, a lot of the benefits their parents and grandparents enjoyed like pensions and company-sponsored retirement plans likely won’t be available any more. This will result in members of these generations having to rely on their own personal savings if they want to retire,” Duncan said. Only one in five Gen X and Gen Y consumers work with a financial professional, according to the LIMRA research. LIMRA also found that younger professionals with access to a retirement plan through their employment were more likely to participate in the plan if they were knowledgeable about financial products. Tom Henske, a financial
professional in New York and author of a weekly news column MoneySmart Kids, believes members of both Gen X and Gen Y can take positive steps toward planning for a better financial future with a few simple steps: 1. Educate yourself with a trusted financial professional on different financial products and opportunities available to you, both via your benefits and retirement savings. 2. Understand what your work benefits can do for you, as well as areas that these benefits might not fully cover your future needs. Determine what opportunities exist to cover any gaps. Also be sure to take advantage of any “free” money offered by your employer. For example, a company may offer a 3 percent match payment to your 401(k) account if you contribute 6 percent. 3. Give yourself a good financial head start now by paying down debts and developing a long-term
plan that includes emergency savings, retirement products to create additional income for when you won’t be bringing in a paycheck any longer as well as protection products like disability income insurance and life insurance. 4. Review and evaluate how well your strategy fits your current and planned future lifestyles once a year. 5. Pass on your education and lead by example. Demonstrate to your children how you take responsibility preparing for retirement. You can demonstrate this in several ways. For younger children, educate them on the importance of paying bills on time — try playing a game of pretend bank. For older children, discuss savings accounts and properly using these accounts. And for young adult children, ask them what actions they’re taking now to plan for their financial future. “Because people in Gen X and Gen Y will
Review and evaluate how well your strategy fits your current and planned future lifestyles once a year. likely fund their retirements via savings, it’s extremely important for them to understand what actions they can take to put themselves in a better
financial position, while also taking advantage of any savings tools through employment benefits and retirement savings,” says Henske.

Clark the latest in a long list of WHHS track stars Watching some athletes in action, I am simply amazed at how easy they make their sport appear to be. At the West Holmes Knights Invite on Saturday, I sat back in wonder as I watched West Holmes freshman Hannah Clark stride around the track like a gazelle. The freshman won all four events in which she competed on Saturday, running a leg on three winning relay teams and winning the 400-meter race on her own. Clark made an impact as a member of the Lady Knights basketball team over the winter, giving hoops fans plenty of reason to be excited about the future of the team. Just a shade under 6-feet tall and still growing, Clark has a long stride that helps her get from point A to point B in fewer steps than most. The long, easy stride makes her a great force on the track as she covers a lot of ground faster than her opponents. That was definitely the case Saturday, as she helped the 4x800 relay team of Alexis Kandel, Alexis Elliot and Hannah Schlegel cruise to victory in the opening event of the meet. She again teamed with Kandel, Ciera Rose and Kennedy Smith in the final event of the meet, the 4x400 to win that event, too. In between, she filled in for Smith on the 4x200 relay squad, as the junior missed the early portion of the meet due to taking the ACT exam. In that race, Clark teamed with Carly Woodruff, Kendra Martin and Paiten Strother to win. She then went on to win the 400-meter dash, her favorite race. Watching Clark run reminded me of another gifted runner, Lindsey Piar, who used to compete for the Knights a few years back. She, too, excelled in track before playing softball, as well as starring in basketball.

Lady Knights rule own invite I remember playing on a coed softball team with Piar, and I was afraid to bat in front of her in the lineup, because I thought she would pass me running the bases. It was an impressive win for West Holmes on Saturday, as the Knights displayed their deep team, double-placing in several events to pile up points and win by nearly 60 points. Coach Rich Patterson has done a great job with all the talent he has assembled. And the girls haven’t missed a beat, either. They compete like tigers but pull for each other even when competing in the same events. Hurdlers Woodruff and Rose talked about how they push each other in practice, which not only benefits them as they make each other better, but also helps make the team around them better. And while there are some seniors mixed in, such as Natalie Abraham and Martin, most of the athletes competing for the Knights are underclassmen, which means this team should be great for a few more years to come.
By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer West Holmes coach Rich Patterson knew he had a talented team coming into this season, and with each passing week, the Knights continue to impress the coach of the Knights. On Saturday at the West Holmes Knights Invite, his girls ran away with the meet, leaving secondplace finisher Dover in the dust 145-84 in the 15-team field. Claymont was third (52.5), followed by Indian Valley (52) and Tusky Valley (50). Rittman finished 10th with 36 points and Waynedale was 14th with 10. “I am completely surprised that we won by that much,” Patterson said. “They came out and competed hard.” Led by an outstanding showing from freshman Hannah Clark, who picked up four wins on the day, and senior Paiten Strother, who chipped in with three victories and a fourth-place finish, the Knights dominated from the opening event (4x800) to the final 4x400. Clark ran a leg on both relays, teaming with Alexis Kandel, Alexis Elliot and Hannah Schlegel to win the 4x800 (10:38.12), before joining forces with Kennedy Smith, Kandel and Rose to win the 4x400 (4:22.34). She won the 400-meter dash on her own, clocking in at 1:01.82. “The 400 is probably my favorite event,” Clark said. “With this wind blowing, that back stretch of the 400 was the hardest. It took all my energy to finish. Coach Harris was letting me know the girl behind me was coming and that made me go even harder. When I hear footsteps of someone behind me, it makes me push harder.” “We stuck her in the 4x2 this week to see what she can do, and she didn’t disappoint,” Patterson said. “The girls have continued to work really hard and compete. Good things happen when you have that combination.” Rose also had a fine day for the Knights, winning the 100 hurdles, edging teammate Woodruff in the finals (16.65 to 17.07), as well as running a leg on the winning 4x400. Rose also finished second in the 300 hurdles (52.83) while Woodruff placed second in the 200
dash (28.44). Ellis Neville added a fourth for the Knights. “Every time we go together, we don’t care who finishes first as long as we go one-two,” Rose said. “It’s all about getting those points for the team.” And that is what the duo did, scoring big in the hurdles and in the sprints. “Double-placing really helps us,” Patterson said. “We use each other as motivation. When we see the other in front, we want to go get them,” Woodruff said. “She’s making me better.” Strother picked up firsts in the long jump with her season-best leap of 16-5, along with a pair of relay wins (4x200 and 4x100). The junior also finished fourth in the 100 dash (14.22). “I still have to work hard. You want to have good times,” Strother said. “I love winning the relays because you win with three other girls. That wind was really hard. It was against us on the back stretch.” The West Holmes coach says the tough practices help the team when it’s
time for meets. “Some of the best races we have are in practice,” Patterson said. “These guys don’t like to lose then, either. As deep as we are, practices are really nice. Someone is always on their game and gives us something to shoot for.” Also picking up a win for the Knights was Natalie Abraham in the discus with a heave of 114-9. Abraham also tied for sixth in the shot put with a heave of 32-9 1/2. In the 16-team boys field, Fairless edged Garaway 82-81 for the top spot. Rittman finished ninth overall with 36 points, one spot ahead of the hosting Knights (31). Hiland finished 12th (21) and Waynedale was 16th with 10 points. There were some outstanding individual efforts turned in by the locals. Hiland hurdler Miguel Sanchez placed first in the 300-meter hurdles and added a second-place in the 110s. “The toughest part was fighting the wind. You See Pg. 22 — RULE

Hiland does just enough to get by rival Garaway By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer Hiland had several opportunities for a big inning in its showdown with Inter-Valley Conference foe Garaway Friday. But, it wasn’t until Brandon Wengerd doubled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs in the fourth inning, and then Kendal Bontrager followed with a sacrifice fly to cap off the three-run rally and lift the Hawks over the Pirates 5-4. The Hawks left runners in scoring position in the first inning without scoring, and scratched out single runs in the second and third frames, but still trailed the Pirates 3-2 in the fourth inning. Caleb Miller got the fourth-inning rally started with an infield single off
Garaway starter and loser Tanner Miller. Hiland’s starting pitcher Jordan Yoder flied out to left for the first out of the inning, but Bryce Mast walked and Todd Ropp singled to load the bases. Wengerd followed with a blast to the gap in leftcenter to score Miller and Mast. Sheldon Mullet got hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, and Bontrager lofted a long fly to deep center that easily scored Ropp with the third run of the inning. Kyle Troyer followed with a ball hit down the third-base line that would’ve cleared the bases, but the home plate umpire called it a foul ball. Troyer then struck out to end the threat. Yoder blanked the Pirates over the next
three innings, but ran into trouble after two were out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Garaway’s Kellan Mutschelkaus was ruled safe on a bang-bang play at first for an infield single. He moved up to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Eric Raber. Yoder induced pinch hitter Dallas Foster to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the game. “The second and third time through the order, my off-speed stuff and my breaking balls were working a lot better than my fastball,” Yoder said. “The mound was a little hard and sticky, and I couldn’t get my fastball in on them. “It’s a great feeling to pitch a complete game. I wouldn’t have felt like I got the job done if I only went out there and threw four or five innings,” he added. “I want the game in my hands.” Yoder said he prefers pitching in nicer conditions, but once he gets out on the mound, his adrenaline starts pumping and he feels plenty
Rule
warm enough to pitch. He finished off the Pirates allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out five without walking a batter. “The highlight was ‘Jordy’ throwing a great game,” Hiland coach Tom Gibson said. “He continued to grind it out. He got down in the count a few times but came back to get them. He has a great changeup and he used it today. He didn’t try to just beat them with his fastball. “The lowlight was, I thought we had terrible at-bats,” Gibson added. “We teach our guys to make adjustments based on the pitcher, and they didn’t make the adjustments until too late. But they’ll learn from it, and it’s better to learn from a win than a loss. I’m glad we won.” The Hawks had seven hits, two of them from Bontrager. “Kendall Bontrager just smoked the ball today,” Gibson said. “He’s only a sophomore. I’m excited about him. We had a lot of young guys out there who did really well.”

Brandt Miller, another sophomore filling in for injured senior shortstop Kevin Schrock, played a solid game both in the field and at the plate. He singled and reached on an error that drove in Hiland’s first run in the second inning. In the third inning, Bontrager singled Wengerd to third, and Kyle Troyer brought him home with a groundout to knot the score at 2-2. Garaway took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a single by leadoff man
Ethan Slentz. He went to second on a sacrifice, third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball. The Hawks reclaimed the lead in the fourth and held on for their fifth win of the season against two defeats. “Yoder pitched a good game.” Garaway coach Justin Elmore said. “He held us in check and they picked the ball up behind him. They don’t beat themselves. We’ve had great games with them the last few years. We just can’t seem to get them.”

SPORTS FANS! Even the most ardent supporters would agree that these days, the amount of money involved in college sports is through the roof. In fact, in a poll of more than 1,000 college presidents in the United State in 2012, more than 75 percent of them said that universities spend “way too much” on intercollegiate athletics. But get this – only 15 percent of thsoe same presidents said that their own schools spent too much money on sports. It’s always the other guys. Want to set a world record? Get out your golf clubs… and tape them all together. At the end of 2012, a golf pro from Arlington, Texas named Michael Furrh mad the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest usable golf club at – get this – 14 feet, two and a half inches. Furrh’s tee shot traveled 146 yards. He broke the record set in 2009 by Denmark’s Karsten Maas, whose club measured 13 feet, 5 inches long. Just for comparison, the longest pole vault is about 15 feet. Minor league baseball teams are famous for wildly whacky and creative promotional giveaways, but the Florida Freedom of the Frontier League just might have raised the bar to a new level. This spring, the team will try to capitalize on the fake girlfriend story of Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o by offering a free bobblehead to all in attendance on May 23rd–but the box will be empty. In addition, a section of the stands will be roped off just for people who bring imaginary friends to the game.

just have to pump your arms harder and push,” said Sanchez. “I was twotenths of a second off the lead in the 110-hurdles. I just go out and try to meet my PR and go after the school record every week.” Sanchez likes the 300-hurdles more than the 110s, but most of all, he likes to compete. “I love the feeling I get when I have to push myself harder at the end,” he said. The new track at Hiland is proving beneficial for Sanchez and the Hawks. “You can mark your places and it actually stays there,” he said. “It’s really helpful at practice.” Top finishers for West Holmes included Cully Gordon in the 3,200 (third). Grant Hay placed third in the pole vault (13-0) and Matt Miller was fifth in the 400. “Two of our mainstays took the ACT test today and they weren’t here for most of the meet,” PatBob Reining photo terson said. “That kind of Hiland’s Miguel Sanchez cruises to victory in the 300-meter hurdles. The hurt us. That gave some of our younger guys a Hiland hurdler also took second in the 110s to highlight the showing of area boys runners at the West Holmes Invitational on Saturday. chance to step up.”

REAL ESTATE TO SELL TO THE HIGH BIDDER AT 6:00 P.M.
One of the best chunks of land to sell at auction this Spring. Level to gently rolling land in a good state of cultivation. Enough land to start a small farm. Enough land to add to your existing acreage and farming program. Easy access from any direction. Mineral rights transfer subject to current leases. No buildings to tear down. No fence rows to remove. Just farm it. Land continues to be a solid investment for the short or long term. Farm it. Invest in it. Develop it. But first you have to buy it. And this chunk of land sells to the high bidder as one parcel.. No minimums. No reserves. No buyer premium. Terms are 10% down day of auction and balance due at closing. Arrange your financing and come bid your judgment. Flyers with plat in mail box on property. Or go to www.gant-realty. com. and click on real estate auctions. Buy land. You will be glad you did.
