Community Dishing up a giant life sandwich When I tell people I write a column in the newspaper, they always ask me the same question. “What do you write about?” I suppose they are looking for an answer like fitness. Or cooking. Or politics. But I always disappoint them and say, “well, I just write about stuff,” and they stare blankly back at me, as if I stopped midsentence. “You know,” I say, in a poor attempt to elaborate. “I write about stuff that happens to me or my kids, or the silly stuff my husband does, or how the dog puked all night. Stuff like that. So basically, life.” And it’s true. I write about life. Usually my words appear somewhere in the newspaper near where you find other standard life items. There may be club news and stories that tug your heartstrings. But there are also other sections that make my job in this paper a little sweeter. The whole circle of life appears right there, in one short
little condensed place on a piece of paper so thin that if left to the elements would disappear faster than the headlines on the gossip pages. There are the listings of births, the announcements that proud parents and grandparents make. I read the names and chuckle about the utter creativity of people these days, and how before you know it, a boy named “Joe” will be the only one in his class. I remark at how big or small they were at birth and wonder what that little baby will become and what headlines he or she will make down the road. Someday I could see that same name in the business brief headlines. Maybe that child will grow up and get married, and a glance at the marriage announcement section of the paper will always be a favor-

ite. Just to look at the people, young and old, falling deeply in love and posing for an often cheesy engagement photograph — perhaps the cheek to cheek pose, or the one when they stand with their arms around each other. To each couple I wish a future of love and happiness. But sometimes it doesn’t work, and the divorce section of the paper is short, without pictures, and never anything to smile about. Other times, it does work and lasts forever, until one of those people is called Home and we read a celebration of their life in the obituary section. I always make sure I give credit to each of those faces and names, for each has lived a life that is worth a moment of my time. If nothing else, even a second or two to internalize each name and know that somewhere in my community there is a grieving family who could use an extra prayer or two. And then there, maybe even on the very same
page, among the listings of births and marriages and deaths, is me. Writing about everything else that happens between all of those major events that we deal with in our lives. The daily routines, the things that make us laugh, and the things that make us cry. If I stop to think about it, I know that just like when all of these events appear so close together on a piece of thin paper, these events have a real effect on what happens to us all. Every single day. It is because of them our daily life is the way it is. We call it life. It is life. It is stuff. It is all connected and a constant changing world we often need to step back away from and realize how we are all a part of one another, from the births to the deaths, from the celebrations to the condolences. The rest of it, in between, is the “stuff” and the glue that holds it all together like a big, giant “Life Sandwich.” And we would be fools to not appreciate every single bite.
“We've been waiting for the weather to change completely,” said Miller. The grand opening will feature giveaways of everything from gift cards to yogurt to merchandise, as well as balloons and photo op decorations. Yummy’s Frozen Yogurt is located at 4860 E. Main St., Berlin. Open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Other popular choices include strawberry sensation, Tahitian vanilla and peach. Each option is all-natural with no artificial flavors. “When you get the strawberry, it tastes like strawberry,” said Miller. The Tahitian Vanilla, for example, is made with real vanilla beans and the peach flavor is made with real peaches. Though the shop opened in February, Reporter Kelley Mohr can be reached Yummy’s will host a grand opening on at 330-674-5676 or kmohr@the-dailyJune 1. record.com.

We never know what a day will bring…joy, tragedy, success, or failure. Knowing this, we must be prepared for the best or the worst that life can bring, treasuring all the moments that life holds. We must have the faith to make plans for the future while making memories in the moment. The best way to begin each day is in praise and prayer…praise for what the Lord has given us and prayer for the wisdom to make each moment contribute to the growth of our spirit. Attend your chosen place of worship each week; there you will make memories for today and a plan for eternity with God.

In last week’s column I mentioned that at one point in my long and storied lawn care career, I inherited a gas-powered mower from my mom. Ancient, rickety and nearly impossible for the corps of lawn-mowing grandchildren to get started, her old mower was replaced with a brand-new model which boasted a “one pull” starting system. Mom’s new mower lived up to its label, pleasantly purring to life with a single quick yank of the cord for at least a dozen summers. The mower she gifted me, however, was ultimately so frustrating to get started that when I wheeled it to the grave I swore I would never own another gas-powered mower. Going electric meant all that would ever stand between my overgrown crab-grass and a whirring blade would be a simple flick of the switch. Faced with the choice of a corded mower that runs directly from the juice in the wall and a cordless, or a battery-powered, rechargeable unit, I chose the former. Having grown up in the pre-lithium ion battery era, I had seen both work and play ruined time and again by worn-down batteries. Choosing the latter would have undoubtedly summoned the disturbing neighborhood spectacle of a half-mown lawn. An additional benefit of my electric mower was the ease with which one could take up the task; simply plug the cord into the wall and off you go in a series of beautiful, rainbowesque arcs until you run out of cord or the world runs out of coal. Of course the whole of the operation is simple enough for even a child to do — and any man who tries to deny that his parenting dream includes sitting in the shade sipping an iced tea while his progeny learn the value of hard work, itchy shins and grass-stained sneakers is a flat-out liar! Simple enough, yes,
“There’s no way I’m mowing with that deathtrap!” one was heard saying. “You’re willing to risk me mowing my own face off, Dad?” said another. Not surprisingly, I’ve been the sole motor behind the handle since the whirling electric death machine arrived in my shed nearly three years ago. Kristin has,

Barbwire But only God can make a tree By BARB LUMLEY Columnist I think that I will never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by
fools like me, But only God can make a tree. The preceding poem is titled “Trees” and was written by Joyce Kilmer. It was brought to mind recently because of the huge maple tree that stood in the front yard at my parents’ house. It was estimated to be around 140 years old. It would have been a small tree when my greatgrandfather Gabriel Wagner farmed and ran a blacksmith shop in 1873. My grandfather William Wagner was just a little boy. Perhaps it was just large enough to provide

some shade as friends and neighbors waited their turn to get their horses shod or some tools made. The county road was built past it much later, taking out the blacksmith shop. Can you imagine the excitement when the first car came slowly chugging up the new road and drove past the maple tree, as everyone watched! My dad would have played under the shade of that tree when he was a little boy, probably with sticks and stones and bits of wood, as only rich kids had real toys. I, too, loved to play in the shade of that big tree, often with my cardboard farm and toy animals, with my faithful dogs Stubby and Rex lying near by. When my cousin would come to visit during summer vacation we would set up housekeeping there with our dolls. It was the perfect place to quietly play, or just sit and dream about growing up. My children played there also, and have fond memories of just sitting under the big maple tree in the summer with their Grandpa and “Biddy Buddy,” their nickname for my mother. One of the things I remember most about that tree was threshing day, when the men would gather at meal time to wash up in the big washtub that was set out, and then lie down to rest in the shade, as they awaited their turn at the dinner table. Many a Sunday afternoon was spent just sitting quietly there, resting from a week of hard work, making hay, See Pg. 11 — TREE

Sliding door ‘reflects’ genius design solution (BPT) — Like many couples who share a bathroom, one Arizona
couple was frustrated by the space that was compromised by a swing-
ing bathroom door. The open door swung into the bathroom vanity and took up too much space in a very traditional bathroom. The couple turned to Board by Board, an Arizona kitchen and bath design company, to give
their bathroom more space and an updated, clean design. Board by Board created a design that would incorporate a sleek, contemporary double mirrored sliding door with Wall Mount Hardware. “The interior wall next

to the swinging door had a built-in vacuum system that prevented us from using a traditional pocket door,” says Christie Board, kitchen and bath designer. “I had seen wall-mounted doors in magazines and have always loved the idea of incorporating this design into a remodel project.” One of the challenges of using wall mounted doors was finding the “right” door. Since this was a master bathroom, the door needed to fit the clean decor of the bathroom and the master bedroom. After much searching, Board found a one panel door and took the door to a glass company to have the door fitted with double-sided, full-length mirrors. Finding the right door was like finding a puzzle and putting the right pieces together, says Board. And the result was a simple design solution that looked ideal in both the bathroom and bedroom. Board chose to use a valance for the door tracks on the wall mount hardware because she

believed that the cleaner look would fit nicely with the master bedroom. To handle the double sided mirrored sliding door, Board used 2610F series Wall Mount Sliding Door Hardware. The mirrored door brings a “cool” looking design element to each room. The Arizona couple is thrilled that the bathroom door conflict is solved with such a beautiful design. The 2610F wall mount hardware features a heavy walled-aluminum door track that is precision extruded for smooth operation and can hold up to 200 pounds of door weight. The convex rail design provides single-point hanger wheel contact for low “feather touch” roll resistance. And designers and do-ityourselfers love the box track design which prevents rollers from jumping the track.

Construction to begin on Farm Credit in Sugarcreek New office will combine a three-county area By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer Farm Credit Mid-America is expanding to new areas. Farm Credit Mid-America, a $19 billion agriculture lending cooperative which serves more than 95,000 farmers, agribusinesses and rural residents throughout Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee, will soon be in Sugarcreek. The groundbreaking ceremony for a new office
was held on May 10 in the middle of a rural field at a location just west of the Dutch Valley Restaurant on state Route 39. The Sugarcreek office will combine the Millersburg and New Philadelphia offices to serve Holmes, Tuscarawas and Harrison counties. Currently, both the Millersburg and New Philadelphia offices — which opened their doors in 2008 — are operating in rented locations. Those offices have outgrown their locations, explained Farm Credit Mid-America Regional Vice President Bill Zuga. “We have added four total new positions to these locations in the past year and look to
add one more within the next year,” he said, noting that as the agricultural industry — the number one industry in Ohio — continues to grow, so will Farm Credit Mid-America. “We are looking forward to becoming a permanent fixture and making this capital investment in the community to better service our existing and new co-op members.” The new office will help the company do so. The Sugarceek Office will house approximately $153,968,478 in loan assets representing 1,084 accounts and 1,636 loans. These accounts will be serviced initially by seven full-time employees. Ground was officially broken on Friday at the future site of the new office for Farm Credit Mid-America. The more centralized office will serve customers in Holmes, Tuscarawas and Harrison counties.Taking part in the ceremony are Amanda Hickey (front, left), Belle Everett, Chris Abbuhl, Clayton Weller, Penny Hummel, Alison Long, Jennifer Croft, Kendra Lowe, Dick Poe (back row, left), Dave Shutt, Bill Theiss, Jon Norman, David Hahn, Mike Hummel, Barb Polen, Dan Biller and Bill Zuga. tion will serve current and new customers in Holmes, Tuscarawas and Harrison Counties, plus any existing or potential customers outside these counties. “By operating under one office, this will allow us to become more efficient and maximize our mobility to deliver our products and services to our customer’s home, farm or business,” said Zuga. This comes with advantages to both staff and
customers, she explained, including increased office space, staff training rooms and more advanced technology. Throughout 2013, Farm Credit will continue to build and renovate the offices. “Farm Credit is making a significant investment in our current customers and their communities with the construction of this new office,” said Zuga. Other advantages follow, he said, as the specialized financial service person-
nel at Farm Credit MidAmerica understand the industry in rural Ohio — offering farm real estate financing loans, operating loans and equipment and livestock loans, as well as crop insurance and leasing options. Once open, office hours will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and by appointment. Reporter Kelley Mohr can be reached at 330674-5676 or kmohr@thedaily-record.com.
Volunteers needed for Glenmont Food pantry The number of families and individuals who live in hunger in the United States is on the rise. Many come from our most vulnerable populations — children and seniors. We are hoping you might help fight hunger by providing food and other essential products to food pantries, as we search for ways to provide hungerrelief programs in our community. Glenmont Food Pantry is just one of those ways to begin fighting hunger on a local level. The Glenmont Food Pantry first opened in October of 2012 at the Glenmont School House, where we serve the clients from a room located on the ground floor. Volun-
teers are made up of a number of different nonprofit organizations who have partnered together to feed the hungry in our community. The Glenmont food pantry is also an Ohio Benefit Bank Site, which assists clients in making sure they have knowledge and access to programs at the State and Federal level dealing with poverty. If you are an individual or a club, and are looking for a community project, we hope you’ll consider choosing your local food pantry, for there are many ways you might help feed our neighbors and friends through donations of food and/or time. We need volunteers to
unload food products on the second Monday of each month at 3:30 p.m., which requires loading and unloading and stocking shelves for food distribution. And we need volunteers to assist clients on the night of distribution which is the second Tuesday of each month. Volunteers are needed any of the hours from 4-8 p.m. If you can volunteer or are in need of more information contact: Rev. Lance at 330-377-5025 or jolance@embarqmail. com or 330-763-1680 for more information. Glenmont Food Pantry is located at 108 Main St., Glenmont. Mailing address is P.O. Box 282, Glenmont, Ohio 44628

Lady Knights ride depth to OCC track crown terson, the husband of girls basketball coach Lisa Patterson, said the first-place finishes are usually what everyone notices, but it’s the places further on down the ledger that win meets. “We had a lot of thirds, fourths and fifths and that’s what put us over the edge,” he said. “We knew if we competed at our very best, winning the OCC was an option and that’s what happened.” In addition to their balance, West Holmes had plenty of stars in the sprints and distances, with Carly Woodruff and Ciera Rose finishing 1-2 in the 100 hurdles (15.36 and 15.47, respectively), Kennedy
By ANDREW VOGEL Staff Writer Another Ohio Cardinal Conference championship for a West Holmes girls team coached by a Patterson. The theme was the same — the Knights simply had more depth than everyone else. West Holmes captured the first OCC crown in program history by finishing with 140 points, just ahead of runnerup Ashland (134.5) this past Friday. Orrville came in third (116), followed by Mansfield Senior (83), Lexington (79), Wooster (41.5), Clear Fork (39.5) and Madison (27.5). West Holmes coach Rich Pat-
Smith the runner-up in the 200 (27.16), Hannah Clark taking the 400 (59.44) and the 4x100 and 4x200 relays of Smith, Woodruff, Paiten Strother and Elise Neville both taking second (50.26 and 1:46.16). Meanwhile the 4x800 relay of Alexis Kandel, Emily Molnar, Hannah Schlegal and Clark pulled out a victory in 9:55.51 and Molnar was third in the 3,200 (12:17.03). Strother and Laina Snyder both picked up wins in field events, with Strother taking the long jump (17-6 1/4) and Snyder winning the shot put (40-1). Woodruff said winning the OCC was a goal the team has
focused on all spring. “Last year we tied for second with Ashland behind Orrville,” she said. “We didn’t care what the finish was and or what the place was as long as we got the points.” Woodruff was also part of the 4x2 squad that set a school record. After that accomplishment, Woodruff said her teammates didn’t even care about the second-place finish. “We never thought that record was going down,” said Woodruff. Balance helped the Wooster Generals end Lexington’s seven-year reign atop the OCC, as the Generals finished with
144.5 points, ahead of the runner-up Minutemen (125.5). Orrville took third (114.5), followed by Madison (63), Ashland (59.5), West Holmes (59), Clear Fork (59) and Mansfield Senior (34). West Holmes was led by Grant Hay, who set the meet record in the pole vault with a jump of 15-0. Hay is well ahead of where he was a year ago when he placed eighth at the state meet at 13-6. Hay’s meet record helped him earn boys field MVP. “I had to get used to the poles the last couple meets,” Hay said. “It all came together today.”
Baird pitches WHHS to sectional title Hawks are blanked in By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer West Holmes lefty Dillon Baird was dealing this past Thursday. The junior ace threw blanks at Indian Valley for five innings before surrendering two runs late in leading the Knights to a 4-2 triumph over the Braves, earning West Holmes (18-7) the
Div. II Zanesville Sectional championship and a berth in the one-game Eastern District tournament. Baird fanned 13 batters and walked only one in tossing a complete-game, seven-hit gem in 101 pitches. “I guess they just started timing me up,” Baird said. “Luckily my defense was
strong behind me and came through with big plays. When Levi made that play at third, it really got my adrenaline pumping.” That play was a diving snag that turned into a fielder’s choice with two on and nobody out in the top of the seventh inning. Nursing a 4-1 lead into the seventh, Baird gave

up back-to-back singles to the No. 7 and 8 hitters to start the inning. No. 9 hitter Caden McGuire, who was one of 12 previous strikeout victims, laced a shot between third and short. Jones, the Knights’ sophomore third baseman, dove to his left, snared the grounder, threw to second for the force and made things a littler easier for Baird. IV got a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half and bring Jake Davis to the plate. Davis, the leading home run hitter for the Braves (16-9) represented the tying run. His previous at-bat in the sixth inning was a double to the fence in center. He eventually came around to score the Braves’ first run. Baird got the big hitter swinging on a curveball for his 13th strikeout of the game — and the victory.
district loss to Toronto
By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer No one has ever won a game without scoring, and Toronto’s ace Tyler Owens did exactly that to Hiland, as he held the Hawk hitters in check. And when the Hiland defense committed two errors in the fifth inning, leading to a pair of unearned runs, it was checkmate for the Hawks, as the Red Knights won 2-0 in the Div. IV Eastern District semifinal Monday in Cambridge. Two of the top-seeded teams in the district were locked in a scoreless battle when Hiland starting pitcher Sheldon Mullet plunked Toronto catcher Brad Melville to lead off the fifth. The next batter, John Marriner, dropped a sacrifice bunt in front of home plate that Mullet fielded and fired a high
SPORTS FANS! On April 15th of each baseball season, every player in the majors wears number 42 to honor Jackie Robinson on the date that he broke the color barrier in 1947. The number is retired throughout the league, so no player can wear it – except one, at least during the 2013 campaign. When Robinson’s number was officially retired in 1997, 13 players who were allowed to keep it for the rest of their careers. The last one, Yankees closer and all-time great Mariano Rivera, announced his retirement as of the end of the 2013 season, when 42 will be gone forever – except every April 15th. Spring means golf. But winter doesn’t stop a few hearty Carlton, Minnesota players in February. That’s when they hold the “Hook and Slice on Ice” tournament on frozen Chub Lake to raise money for local charities. Holes are drilled in the ice, and the “golfers” use tennis rackets, hockey sticks and canoe paddles to knock tennis balls around the course. Hosted by a local Rotary Club, the event raises about $20,000 to pay for scholarships, books and other educational support. Hard as it might be to believe, there is hockey in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates fields an Under-17 team that competes for the Turkmenistan Cup – but not very well. Early in 2013, they faced off against the Under-17 HC Silver Lions of St. Petersburg, Russia. The final score was 60-0. That’s an average of one goal each minute for the entire game. In case there is any doubt, the Russian team won.

throw to second base that went into center field, putting two on with no one out. A soft single to right by Tyler Antinone loaded the bases before the senior right hander induced a popup to second base for the first out of the inning. A comebacker to the mound appeared to be just what the doctor ordered for Mullet to escape the jam, as he threw home for the second out, but catcher Kevin Yoder’s throw to try and double-up Chaz Glenn at first went high and into right field, allowing Marriner to score. Leadoff man Blaze Glenn then followed with a single to center to plate Antinone for a 2-0 Red Knights lead. “The strength of our team is defense, and making plays. We didn’t do that today,” said Hiland coach Tom Gibson, whose team bowed out of the tournament with a 21-7 record. The Red Knights (20-6) advanced to the district title game. Owens allowed only four Hiland hits, and none until the fourth inning. The Hawks got two on in the seventh, but Owens wriggled off the hook. Jordan Yoder singled with one out and after the pitcher’s lone punchout of the game, he walked Bryce Mast, putting two on with two out. Mullet lined out to second to end the game and the Hawks’ season. “All year we’ve been solid with the gloves,” said Gibson. “It kind of surprised me that we threw the ball around like we did. But, that’s high school baseball.”
