Support funds are getting low for library on wheels Donations keep bookmobile on the road By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer MILLERSBURG — The fund that supports the Holmes County Library’s Bookmobile service is running low. The Bookmobile Support Fund, the donation-

geared fund designated to provide for all Bookmobile costs, has an estimated carryover of $44,000 for 2014. That fund requires $42,500 in appropriations for 2014. Continued expenses include materials such as books, periodicals, audiovisual material, data lines and motor vehicle fuel and maintenance. “We have $2,000 in contingencies since with the Bookmobiles getting older, we might have some more repair costs,” said

Fiscal Officer Paula Cicconetti. “If you compare our carryover balance with where our appropriations are at, we’re getting pretty close and we can’t appropriate more than what our estimated revenue is. We’re kind of getting down there as the money there will be mostly used up.” Plus, as the bookmobiles are aging, the library is looking tentatively to 2015 for the purchase of a new bookmobile. That Bookmobile Sup-

port Fund was first started in 2008 with an endowment. Since then, donations from local businesses and individuals have kept it up. The bookmobile provides library service in areas of Holmes County where people lack easy access to one of the

library’s two fixed library facilities at the Central Library in Millersburg and the East Branch in Walnut Creek, including members of the Amish Community who would otherwise have to travel long distances by horse and buggy. “With the bookmobile,

Under the mural is a full deli case with more than 40 meat and cheese options in the back of the store, as well as a soup and sandwich shop that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner that people can either have to go or eat in-store. Steve Swartzentruber credits his wife, Miriam, to creating the name of the store. “We talked about Green Acres Market, or Mount Eaton Market or whatever, and one day, I came home from work and my wife was like, ‘I got it. Red Tomato Market,’” Steve Swartzentruber said. Although the store has been open for about a month, the Swartzentrubers said they still can’t

Hitting the slopes Scouts learning proper safety to earn snow sports merit badge

By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer MILLERSBURG — Members of Millersburg Boy Scout Troop 357 are putting in the hours to earn a merit badge for snow sports. Of the more than 130 merit badges to choose from, the Scouts chose the Snow Sports Merit Badge for skiers and snowboarders because of their love for the sports. In fact, all of them have experience skiing or snowboarding. “I love skiing so I really

wanted to go more,” said Adam Polcyn, an eighthgrade skier from West Holmes Middle School. “Skiing is really fun for me,” agreed Luke Vaccariello, a fifth-grader, whose older brothers and sisters learned to ski first — and teased him about it. “I wanted to become a skier to get better than all of them.” For the only snowboarder in the group, the badge is a matter of pride. “I can’t let the war be lost between skiers and snowboarders,” announced Jason Abra-

ham, an eighth-grader. Collin Miller, also an eighth-grader, tried snowboarding once. “One concussion later, I’m skiing for life,” he said. “Skiing is fun and I need a merit badge.” To earn the badge, the Scouts were required to meet several criteria with the help of Rob Hovis, the merit badge counselor for snow sports, who was joined by recreational skiers John Goudy and Doug Mohr. Badge requirements include discussing winter sports safety, first aid for related injuries or illnesses and how to report an accident to the local ski patrol. The Scouts also learned some of the history of snow sports — from the invention of the ski in northern Europe to the development of more modern styles to accommodate downhill skiing. “There were some steps before skis,” explained Hovis. “What do you think

came before people actually put long flat boards on their feet? Snowshoes. So snowshoes were developed by shepherds who needed to bring sheep down from the mountains when the snow started falling. At some point, some brainy shepherd must have thought ... instead of this lattice work on the snow shoe I could slide down with a flat board.” Responsibility and safety in snow sports was also discussed, starting with the importance of using the proper clothing, gear and equipment when skiing or snowboarding. Necessary items include skis or a snowboard, boots, poles, goggles, helmet, as well as coats, gloves and ski pants made out of a water-resistant material. “Cotton clothing and blue jeans are not recommended because they will not keep you warm when they get wet,” said Hovis. “If you fall in the snow or slide in the snow, if you’re wearing blue jeans or cotton pants you’re going to get wet. If you are wearing ski clothing, it doesn’t absorb water. You stay dry, you stay warm.” When participating in

Hovis, Goudy and Mohr brought their own ski equipment to show the Scouts their skis and

boots, poles, helmets and snowpants. The Scouts also learned the Responsibility Code, which includes a commitment to staying in control and remembering that people down the hill have the right of way and that it is each skier’s own

can be renewed by calling the Central Library, East Branch or by bringing the items to the bookmobile. As an extension of these services, items can also be returned to several Book Return drop boxes located around the county. The bookmobile makes stops at schools, public locations, post offices, stores, the Holmes County Training Center, subdivisions and in other places throughout the county where a need is recognized. In fact, as a new stop the bookmobile will be going to Nashville starting Thursday, Jan. 9 from 3-4:20 p.m. at Nashville Elementary School. While bookmobile materials are asked to be returned promptly, patrons with overdue materials are not charged fines.

It had to be a mid-December night’s dream As I sat there looking out the sliding glass doors at the snow covered hills, my mind was a blank. An email had let me know that my column for next week is due early and the ideas just weren’t coming. No light bulbs were going off, no brainstorms, no interesting words coming off the tips of my fingers onto the computer keyboard. I decided to just go have a nice cup of hot tea and read a new magazine that came in the mail. And as I was reading along, there it was — the possible answer to my mental block!

A recent study found that mild untidiness can foster creativity. “Most of the received wisdom on cleanliness states that cleaner environments produce better results,” says Kathleen Vohs, the study’s lead author and a professor at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. “However, when things aren’t structured, people can feel inspired to shake up their thinking,” Vohs says. So there could be the answer to my “writer’s block”! My house and environ-

ment is just too neat and clean! As I look around, the path to the house has been shoveled out and salted so no ice freezes on it. No wet, muddy boots, toboggans, Carhartts, or gloves thrown down inside the front door. The dogs have been coaxed to the basement and given a couple chew bones to keep them quiet. The Holstein and dairy magazines that usually lie in a pile in the corner of the kitchen have been removed to another place for safe keeping until we can get around to reading them. Wayne County Extension office at 330-264-8722 by Jan. 10, or by email to: lewandowski.11@osu.edu. Selecting corn hybrids for 2014 Peter Thomison, OSU Extension corn specialist offers the following tips to consider in choosing corn hybrids for 2014. 1. Select hybrids with maturity ratings appropriate for your geographic area or circumstances. Corn for grain should reach physiological maturity or “black layer” one to two weeks before the first killing frost in the fall. Grain drying can be a major cost in corn production. Use days-to-maturity, growing degree day (GDD) ratings, and harvest grain moisture data from performance trials to determine differences in hybrid maturity and dry down. One of the most effective strategies for spreading risk, and widening the harvest interval, is planting multiple hybrids of varying maturity. 2. Choose hybrids that have produced consistently high yields across a number of locations. Choosing a hybrid simply because it contains the most stacked transgenic traits, or possesses appealing cosmetic traits, like “flex” ears, will not ensure high yields; instead, look for yield consistency across environments. Hybrids will perform differently based on region, soils and environmental conditions. Growers should not rely solely on one hybrid characteristic, or transgenic traits, to make their product selection. 3. Plant hybrids with good standability to minimize stalk lodging (stalk breakage below the ear). This is particularly important in areas where stalk rots are perennial problems, or where field drying is anticipated. There are some hybrids that have outstanding yield potential, but may be prone to lodging problems under certain environmental conditions after they reach harvest maturity.

In 2013, many Ohio fields experienced root lodging and mid-season stalk breakage (aka “greensnap” or “brittlesnap”) injury due to strong winds on July 10. This past year, 2013, is the third consecutive year in which we have experienced wind damage across a fairly large swath of the state during the mid to late vegetative stages. In the Ohio corn performance trial, there was considerable variability among hybrids for greensnap damage. Corn growers should consult with their seed dealer on hybrid sensitivity to root lodging and greensnap. 4. Select hybrids with

ny. “When it comes to nutrition and avoiding weight gain, my motto is, keep it simple and easy.” Here are some tips to help you do the same. Bulk up your plate with protein and vegetables The side dishes at most holiday meals are often as good as the turkey or ham, but stuffing and mashed potatoes aren’t the best way to fill your plate. One way to avoid weight gain is to build your plate with protein. This should be easy since holiday dinners revolve around meat. Second, fill your plate with side dishes that include vegetables. You may have a little spot left on your plate — use this space for your “indulgence.” When you look at your plate, the goal is that the majority is still providing you with good nutrients and reduced carbohydrates. Use the “fork” trick Many of us go back for seconds, and even third helpings at holiday meals. This year,

To help you answer this question, use the fork trick. Once you take a bite of food, place your fork down on the plate and let it go. Chew your food, swallow and then pick it up again. The key to this trick is letting go of the fork. This will remind you to slow down, enjoy your food and converse with friends and family. Avoid the clean plate club Growing up, many

of us were always told “You can’t leave the table until you finish everything on your plate” and inevitably, we spent many nights sitting alone at the dinner table. These days, Rodriguez advises her clients to eat until they are full and, if their plate is not clean, it’s OK. Focus on one plate of food, slow down and be careful not to overeat. Overfeeding is never really a healthy thing to do. See Pg. 15 — WEIGHT

Scouts Corney is new director for The Wilderness Center (From Page 10)

The Wilderness Center has announced the appointment of Dr. Jeffrey R. Corney as executive director, succeeding Gordon T. Maupin, who recently announced Corney his retirement after 32 years of service in the role. Corney will take up his duties on April 1, 2014. Corney joins The Wilderness Center from the University of Minnesota, where he spent the past eight years as managing director of the University’s Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve. This 5,400-acre reserve is a large ecological research site in central Minnesota with natural habitats that

represent the entire state, providing the venue for research, conservation and education programs. Corney, who holds master’s and doctoral degrees in Natural Resources from The Ohio State University, oversaw all aspects of Cedar Creek’s operations and was instrumental in expanding the reserve’s educational and outreach programs. Prior to coming to Cedar Creek in 2006, Corney spent four years as an assistant professor at Lynchburg College and the first full-time director of the college’s Claytor Nature Study Center, a 470-acre field station and nature center located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. “The fact that we were able to attract a leader of Jeff’s caliber to become our new executive direc-

tor speaks to The Wilderness Center’s strength, stability and dynamism over our first 50 years,” said C. Andrew Haag, managing partner at Regas & Haag and president of the Board of Directors at The Wilderness Center. “As we look to our second half century, I am confident Jeff’s leadership excellence, science education credentials and innovative track record will help us continue to create sustainable value for our community while offering cutting-edge programs that are a model for other nature centers to follow.” The Wilderness Center has become the leading land conservation and nature education organization in northeast Ohio. Other key responsibilities include observing all posted signs and warnings and knowing how to load, ride and unload safely prior to using a lift. “I think the biggest thing that people don’t want to do is take lessons,” said Goudy. “But you get better so much faster, even when you are a pretty good skier. They will teach you some things you didn’t think you could do on skis. So it always pays to take lessons.” Ohio skiing is much different than mountain skiing, he added. “When you ski in Ohio you tend to think you are a really good skier, until you get into the mountains where it’s real steep. Organic Farming Registion is under way for OEFFA annual conference address, “Farmers as Role Models and Leaders: Protecting Nature and Creating Social Change.” Diffley is an organic farmer, consultant, activist and author. She and her husband, Martin, operated Gardens of Eagan in Eagan, Minn., one of the Midwest’s first certified organic produce farms, and now provide consulting through their business, Organic Farming Works. She is a co-editor of Wholesale Success: A Farmer’s Guide to Food Safety, Post-Harvest Handling, Packing and Selling Produce, and the author of an autobiographical memoir, “Turn Here Sweet Corn: Organic Farming Works.” Kathleen Merrigan will provide Sunday’s keynote address, “Dysfunctional DC Matters: Ten Reasons to Stay Engaged in Federal Agricultural Policy.” Merrigan served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture from 2009-13. She helped to write the original law that created the National Organic Program to establish organic standards and then implemented the new rules as head of the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service from 1999-2001. As Deputy Secretary, Merrigan played a vital role

in developing the department’s Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative, and championed farm-to-school program, season extension and organic programs. Workshops The conference will offer more than 100 beginner, intermediate, and advanced workshops across 18 tracks, covering a range of topics including sustainable farming, gardening, homesteading, cooking, livestock and poultry production, business management, food and farm policy, research and more. “Whether you’re a fulltime farmer, backyard gardener, or local food enthusiast, this conference has workshops to offer you,” said Hunt. As part of the 2014 conference, OEFFA will host the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program’s Farmers Forum. This annual event gives farmers, ranchers and others funded by NCR-SARE grants the chance to share information about their research projects. The Farmers Forum will be offered as special conference workshop track, with additional projects featured in other workshop tracks.

The Forum will showcase projects from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio and will cover a range of topics, including nut processing and marketing, low tunnel strategies, and cover crops for organic production. Pre-Conference Events The conference will also feature two full-day preconference events on Friday, Feb. 14. The first pre-conference workshop, Eco-Farming, Biodiversity and Soil Health: A Systems Approach to Enhancing Productivity, will help growers improve their productivity and farm economics by using natural soil amendments, cover crops and other methods, combined with regular testing for soil health and organic matter. Extension educators Rafiq Islam, Randall Reeder, Jim Hoorman, Brad Bergefurd, Harit Kaur Bal, Alan Sundermeier and Vinayak Shedekar will discuss the eco-farming systems approach, fruit and vegetable plasticulture production, soil amendment and nutrient recycling, and more. This workshop will be held at Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark. A second pre-conference workshop, Whole-

sale Marketing for Fresh Produce Growers, will help growers take advantage of marketing opportunities with retailers, wholesalers and institutions. Marketing and organic farming expert Atina Diffley will help participants learn about the advantages and disadvantages of wholesale marketing; good practices for satisfying buyers; grading, pricing, and packaging products; establishing contracts; food safety and more. This workshop will be held at the Granville Inn in Granville. Additional Features The conference will also feature: Saturday evening entertainment, including a performance by The Back Porch Swing Band and a film screening and discussion of “Network Theory” with filmmaker Brad Masi; An Exhibit Hall featuring dozens of businesses, nonprofits and government agencies offering an array of food, books, farm and garden products, tools, information and services; A kid’s conference with engaging activities for children ages 6-12;

types. The CAUV soil rates allow land to be taxed based on its agricultural value, rather than fair market value. The County Auditor has no control over the calculation performed by the state. The Auditor’s role in this regard is simply to apply the results of the predetermined calculation from the Ohio Department of Taxation. The Ohio Department of Taxation uses several criteria in calculating CAUV land values including yield information, cropping patterns, crop prices, non-land

production costs, and the capitalization rate. CAUV rates are updated every three years and current rates were updated with the 2013 triennial update. Even with the significantly increased CAUV values, farmers are paying taxes at a reduced rate and landowners are paying taxes on a small percentage of fair market value. In 2012, the statewide average CAUV per acre totals $994. Compare this value to the 2012 market value per acre land on CAUV is $3,044. The County Auditor has

no authority to adjust CAUV values. Additional information is available on the Auditor’s website at www.holmescountyauditor.org. You can view the soil values tables produced by the Ohio Department of Taxation and the type and value of soils for each CAUV parcel by clicking on the CAUV tab for each parcel. 2013 CAUV values are increasing Many Holmes County agricultural landowners will be surprised when they open their 2014 tax bills. For those on Current Agricultural Use Values (CAUV) program, property values have increased several hundred percent over 2010 CAUV values, depending on soil type. Unlike fair market value appraisals, CAUV values are calculated by the State of Ohio Department of Taxation for each soil type in Ohio by a formula that is based on five factors. Ohio has approximately 3,500 soil

Hawks grind out win over Garaway

Bob Reining photo

Hannah Clark drives and scores with the left hand in West Holmes’ win over River View.

Lady Knights and Hawks post wins By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer Hiland and West Holmes girls were both winners in high school basketball Wednesday night. West Holmes, 41 River View 28 An 11-4 run in the second quarter helped West Holmes take a double-digit lead and the Knights held on for a non-conference win over the visiting Black Bears Wednesday. Laina Snyder was the lone West Holmes player in double figures with 13 points to go with 10 rebounds. Alex Brown chipped in eight points including a pair of 3-pointers for the winners,

who improved their record to 7-0 on the season. Brittleigh Macaulay scored six points and Paiten Strother added five. Hiland 77 Sandy Valley 27 The Hawks started slowly but turned up the intensity in the second and third periods to post an easy win over the Cardinals in this Inter-Valley Conference clash. Regina Hochstetler led a trio of Hiland scorers in double digits with 17 points, followed by Megan Beachy with 12 and Brittany Miller with 10. Emily Yoder added eight points and five assists for the winners (6-1, 5-0).

By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer Hiland followed up Saturday’s come-frombehind, action-packed win over West Holmes with an uninspiring 51-41 triumph over neighboring rival Garaway in an Inter-Valley Conference contest at the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center Tuesday in Berlin. While the final score may show the Hawks won by 10, the visiting Pirates had pulled to within four (45-41) with 47 seconds remaining, before a pair of Todd Ropp free throws ignited a 6-0 run to close out the contest. Hiland coach Mark Schlabach could not understand why his team was not more emotionally into the rivalry game. “It was Hiland-Garaway. The emotion just wasn’t there,” Schlabach said. “We didn’t do a good job of maintaining focus. Our guys should’ve done a better job of recognizing they were struggling, so let’s take some better shots instead of fouling and some of the mental stuff we kept on doing. “Neither team played as sharp as they’d have liked.” The Hawks were just sharp enough to pull out win No. 6 without a loss (4-0 in the IVC), while the Pirates dropped to 2-4, 1-3. Garaway had nearly as many turnovers (12) as points (16) in the first half as Hiland slogged its way out to a 23-16 lead at intermission. Lucas Mast and Ropp scored four points apiece early on the inside, but Ropp picked up two quick fouls and spent most of the second quarter on the bench watching. The senior finished with 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Hawks. Hiland made nine of 22 shots in the first half, but only 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. “That second quarter wasn’t very pretty to watch,” Schlabach said, but he said the play of Brady Schlabach was one of the few bright spots. “Brady’s been playing really hard. Tonight he hit some big shots for us,” Schlabach said. “When they made a big shot, I think twice he answered them with a big 3. Those were big points. He’s kind of a little gnat out there defensively that’s really

Hiland’s Todd Ropp drives hard to the hole during Tuesday’s Inter-Valley Conference clash with neighboring Garaway. The Hawks pulled out a 51-41 win over the Pirates. annoying.” Schlabach made a steal and dish to Blochlinger for a three-point play attempt, and then followed it up with a 3-pointer that helped the Hawks take a 36-26 lead into the fourth quarter. The sophomore finished with eight points, as did Lucas Mast, to back up Ropp. “We’ve had some guys play well in stretches, but I’d like to see more consistency,” Schlabach said. Hiland tried to take the air out of the ball, leading 41-29 with just under six minutes to play, but the Pirates rallied behind Dallas Foster and Sam Geb-

hardt. Foster scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter and Gebhardt tied Ropp with 17 points. After the Hawks missed the front end of a 1-and1 bonus, Garaway’s Broc Beachy banked in a triple to make it 45-41 with 47 seconds to play. Ropp answered with two free throws and then Eric Miller followed with a pair after a missed 3-point attempt by the Pirates to seal the victory. “We didn’t back down from any pressure and I thought our kids grew up tonight, big time,” Garaway coach Dave Shutt said. “We got it down to four and then got a little

helter-skelter there trying to rush some shots when we didn’t need to. But that’s part of being young and not being in that situation.” The Hiland coach knows can ill-afford another sub-par effort this weekend when the Hawks play at Newcomerstown and against Elyria at the WQKT-Steve Smith Holiday Hoops Classic at The College of Wooster on Saturday (7 p.m.). “We’ve got to dig deep this week,” Schlabach said. “We’ve got Newcomerstown (on Friday). They’re legit. They’ve been beating people bad and their place will be rocking.”

Brady Arnold now Knights’ all-time leading scorer By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer The WQKT/Steve Smith Holiday Classic has seen its share of great players take the court during its 10-year existence at The College of Wooster. Aaron Craft, Ohio State’s current point guard, played in the Classic while at Liberty Benton. Incredibly, Craft, then a junior, was 8-of-25 from the foul line that winter day in 2008, and the Eagles were upset 57-56 in overtime by Tallmadge. Others who stopped at the Classic before going on to play in college include Richard Semrau of Lutheran West, now at Illinois; Pat Forsythe of Brunswick (West Virginia, Akron); Tom Pritchard of Lakewood St. Edward (Indiana). N’Gai Evans of Hoover went on to play for Wright State and is currently playing professionally in Slovakia. Local standouts among the alums are Kenny Kornowski from Smithville who went on to become an All-American at Walsh and is also currently playing overseas, and a pair of

Hiland stars who led the Hawks to back-to-back state tiles, Dylan Kaufman (now at Findlay) and Seger Bonifant (West Liberty). This year’s six-game Classic, which tipped off at noon, featured several more Div. I collegebound players. Isaiah Walton of Elyria, which played Hiland in Game 5 at 7 p.m., has verbally committed to University of California-Davis, while Norwalk’s 6-foot-5 Jeff Thomas turned down numerous Mid-American Conference offers to commit to Georgia State. Norwalk met Wooster in the Game 4 matchup at 5:15. Appearing last on the floor at Timken Gymnasium — but certainly not least — was Brady Arnold of West Holmes. Arnold, the reigning Daily Record Player of the Year, showcased his considerable skills when the Knights closed the Classic at 8:45 p.m. against Northwestern (4-1). Arnold, who recently signed to continue his basketball career collegiately at West Liberty, recently became the leading scorer

all-time in West Holmes history. The guard surpassed the 40-year mark of Mike Cline, who finished his WH career with 1,252 points. Cline then went on to play four years at Ohio State (1976-79) and was a two-time captain of the Buckeyes. “He broke it pretty early in the season, so he’s really going to break it,” said Cline, now a resident of Indiana who was reached while on a business trip in Wisconsin. “When my mom said it had stood for 40 years, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s a long time. That’s a long time.’” Cline graduated from West Holmes in 1974 and walked on at Ohio State, but blew out his knee in the third practice of the season. He came back the next year more determined than ever and made the team as the 13th man. He joked that he had to move to Indiana because he was tired of being known as Lisa Cline’s brother in Ohio. Lisa Cline set every area scoring record there is before heading to OSU herself, becoming an All-American and Big Ten MVP in

her career there. The work ethic Cline said he developed when growing up was instrumental in his rise from walk-on to captain with the Buckeyes, which coincided with Eldon Miller taking over from longtime head coach Fred Taylor. Cline is fifth all-time in career free throw percentage (.819) at OSU, and as a senior started 14 games and averaged 6.1 points and 2.5 rebounds for a team that went 19-12 and included future NBA players Kelvin Ransey and Herb Williams in the lineup. The two years prior to that, the Buckeyes were a combined 12-37 and just 6-30 in the Big Ten. “My best trait was being tough,” Cline said. “Being a plumber’s son from Millersburg made me tough. I’d play a game and the next morning (my dad) would expect me to be up working for him.” Arnold is listed at 5-foot-11, while Cline was a sturdy 6-4. But current West Holmes assistant Don Hall, who grew up in Millersburg watching Cline play for the Knights and has worked

with Arnold through his four years on the varsity, said what joined the two West Holmes stars can’t be measured. “There’s not really much you can compare about the two on the court,” Hall said, noting that Cline played 40 years ago, before there was a 3-point shot. “But, off the court, both had the same drive to be excellent.” Keith Troyer, who is in his first year as coach of the Knights, knows how lucky he was to inherit Arnold, who is currently averaging 24.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 steals and 3 assists. “Brady is so fun to watch,” Troyer said. “He’s good enough off the dribble where he can get to the rim about any time. He can shoot the 3. He’s one of the best foul shooters around.” So far, no opponent has been able to keep Arnold in check. Triway had Jordon Miller shadow him around the court and Arnold still finished with 24 points in the win over the Titans, while he stung Orrville for 27 points in a 64-52 WH victory.

“Brady’s a good player. I’ve watched him play well for four years straight,” OHS head coach Sly Slaughter said. “What you can try to do is focus your entire defense on him and try to shut him down. The other alternative is to let him get his and try and shut the other guys down.” Hiland coach Mark Schlabach kidded that a team’s best hope is that Arnold gets in foul trouble. The Hawks handed the Knights their lone loss, 53-50, as Arnold scored 21 points. While Arnold is glad he was able to set the scoring mark at West Holmes, he’s more focused on the number of wins he and the Knights can rack up. “We just want to go out and win games, win for the fans,” Arnold said. “I’ll put a little more pressure on myself this year, being one of three seniors. But I think we’ve got some guys who can contribute. We just have to challenge ourselves and see what we’re capable of.” So far, Arnold and Co. have proven to be up to the challenge.

West Holmes wrestlers split with Vikings, Bobcats By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer West Holmes split a pair of dual matches Thursday, starting the evening off with a 69-12 thumping of Akron North in ‘The Dungeon’ at West Holmes. The Knights couldn’t pull off the dual meet sweep dropping a hard-fought contest to Cambridge by a 36-33 count. “We were right there,” West Holmes wrestling head coach Jeff Woods said. “Cambridge won their own tournament and we were fifth. We’re starting to show some improvement. A couple of breaks here or there could’ve been the difference in the dual with Cambridge. “Against Akron North, that pretty much went as expected. They’re a young, inexperienced squad. But, a couple of their kids showed some promise,” the coach added. The Knights broke out to an early 12- 0 lead against Akron North courtesy of fall wins from Josiah Allison (126 pounds) and Charlie Evans (132). The Vikings got on the board

via a fall win but senior Grant Raber stopped any momentum fighting back from an early deficit to record a second period pin. North came back with another fall win, closing within 18-12. The Knights’ Caleb Cox (160) earned a fall to virtually sew up the dual win. Following Cox’s victory, the Vikings would forfeit 170 through 285 giving West Holmes a 60-12 advantage with three bouts remaining. Freshman Ethan Alverson (106) scored a fall, a decision win from Mitch Tyson (113) and a Cole Woods (120) fall accounted for the Knight 69 points. The dual against Cambridge was a different story. Senior Chase Campbell (138) was the only Knight to win a match in the first five bouts against the Bobcats, who took an 18-6 lead. West Holmes pulled to within three points of Cambridge after the 195pound bout (21-18), thanks to two comeback fall wins by seniors Tyler McElroy (170) and Grayson Miller (195). The Bobcats fought back,

winning the next three bouts (220, 285 and 106) pushing their lead to 36-18. Receiving two forfeit wins (113 and 120), West Holmes was now back in the hunt trailing 36-30 heading into the final bout. Needing a fall win to knot the team score and

send the team victory decision to a criteria tiebreaker, the Knights’ Allison tried his best early to get the fall but settled for a 16-14 overtime decision. “Josiah knew he had to get the pin,” Woods said. “He came close quite a few times but the Cambridge

kid would counter. When the match was going on I thought even if Josiah gets the pin, we probably still lose on the criteria. That’s when we decided to just let him wrestle and win. That was a heck of a match. “Josiah, and Chase (Campbell) both fought

hard in their matches,” the coach added. “McElroy and Miller coming back were good to see also.” With the split of the duals, West Holmes is 2-3 on the season. Cambridge rolled Akron North in their match 72-12.

SPORTS FANS! Most college football fans missed it – in October of 2013 the record for most yards rushing in a game was not just set, but shattered. In a Division III match up, Western Connecticut defeated Worcester State 55-35 thanks to... wait for it... 455 yards rushing from Octavias McKoy, who was averaging almost 200 yards per game. Then there was Division I running back Jayson Carter of Rice. He didn’t set any records, but he did get his first career carry in a win over UTEP. Why the big deal? Because Carter is definitely no big deal – he’s just 4’9” tall and weighs a mere 135 pounds. When you think of the best wide receivers in the NFL over the last few years, Buffalo’s Stevie Johnson doesn’t exactly leap to mind. But he should. Get this – he was one of only seven receivers in league history to post three seasons of 75 catches, 1,000 yards and five touchdowns before his 27th birthday. And note that Johnson wasn’t catching balls from Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. His quarterbacks were J.P. Losman, Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, E.J. Manuel and Thaddeus Lewis. Who holds the NCAA record for most career receptions? Here’s a hint: he now plays for the Detroit Lions. If you guessed all-world wide receiver Calvin Johnson, known as Megatron for his superhuman ability, you would of course be... wrong. The answer is Ryan Broyels, who caught a record 349 balls as an Oklahoma Sooner from 2008 to 2011, but whose NFL career has been stymied by injuries.
