Community The top three things to know in 2014 Is it me or have our brains been tricked to believe that we’re not smart enough to make good decisions on our own? It seems that everywhere I turn there is a list of the top 10 of this or the best three of that. It’s overwhelming, mind-boggling and a bit ridiculous to think that some stranger’s opinion is better than my own. I recently stumbled upon a news piece that listed the top 30 things you didn’t know for 2014. (Joke was on them, actually. I knew quite a few of them already.) I sat reading and watching videos telling me all of the things I was doing wrong in my life, from hard boiling eggs to unpeeling a banana to drying my hands in public places. It was a little crazy, but
Kerrie McKallister Dirt Don’t Hurt
truthfully very informative. So by borrowing some of their ideas and adding in a touch of my own, I bring you the top three things to know in 2014. Number One: You are probably drying your hands wrong in public places. The number of paper towels used each day by Americans is outrageous, and the purpose of the news piece was to share a method of drying your hands without wasting so much of our natural resources. The article suggested the “shake and fold” method,
where you shake your hands 12 (yes, 12 — not 11, not 13) times after rinsing and then use one towel and fold it in half before wiping them dry. The folding is apparently important due to some scientific principle of some fancy word, so it’s legit. I know I fall victim to the convenience of the paper towel machine, where I find myself pulling way more out than I actually need because it’s there and it never seems to tear where it is supposed to tear. But I firmly believe that we that waste too much and it’s good to do good things, so I’m sharing the shake and fold method in good conscience. Number Two: Your bathroom mirrors, counters and walls will all be speckled with water drop
stains by the end of January because you will have tried the shake and fold in your own home, probably soon after reading these very words. At least one time, you will shake your hands 12 times and then just wipe your hands on the back of your pants like I often do and save the paper towel for use in cleaning up the bathroom. Number Three: The last thing you should realize in 2014 is that lists of the best of or top things aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. Don’t forget to trust your instincts and make your own well-thought decisions. (But always wash your hands, please.) Visit and contact at www.KarrieMcAllister. com.

Show (From Page 1) deer blinds,” said Witzky. “Whether you are a turkey hunter, a deer hunter or a fisherman, there is something for everyone at this show.” The show began in 2009 by Wayne Miller of Kidron Sports. In 2010, JW Promotions assumed ownership of this event. Since then, it’s continued to grow — just look at the vendor list. Nearly 150 vendors will be on site selling gear and equipment such as camouflage, guns, deer stands, jerky, ammunition, hunting bags, tackle, kayaks, canoes, candies, barbe-
cue sauces, spices, shoes, knives and more. The first year, the show attracted between 3,0004,000 visitors. In 2013, nearly 8,000 people attended the show, with even more vendors and hunting outfitters on-site, many coming from as far as Montana, Canada, Minnesota and Kansas — more are expected this year. Of more than 120 vendors, 15 are fishing and hunting outfitters from across the United States and Canada. “If you are looking to book hunting trips, this is the place to go. To have that many outfitters in
one show is a lot of outfitters. Whether you want to hunt moose, elk, wild boar — you name it — you’ll have a good selection at the show,” said Witzky. One new vendor, the Ohio State Prospector Association, will show people how to pan for gold in the Ohio River. “If you are out camping or canoeing this summer, you can teach the kids how to take a pan down to the river and look for gold — they’ll show you how to do that,” explained Witzky. The list of vendors ranges from taxidermists to See Pg. 8 — SHOW

In addition to the many vendors, outdoor enthusiasts can learn from the experts. Speakers for the 2014 show will include well-known experts on hunting, fishing, land man-
agement and trapping, to name a few. “We have fishing and hunting seminars every hour on the hour,” Witzky said. Award-winning hunter, speaker and television personality Bill Epheards will speak of his experi-

Paintbrushes blazing, the real artist returns About a month ago I let you in on the fact that while my wife and our oldest daughter jetted off on a once-ina-lifetime trip to Italy, I would remain here at home in Ohio keeping the fire stoked, the pets fed, and our other two children out of mischief. I realize that a mere two weeks as a one-man show isn’t much of a test as compared to those who go it alone for the long haul, but I’m going to declare my brief tenure as a single parent a success. A steady stream of smoke curled nightly from the fireplace flue, neither pets nor progeny were poisoned by my cooking and not a single felony was committed under my watch.
John & Kristin Lorson
Daily Record Columnist & Illustrator
One thing I had failed to mention to readers was in order to maintain our weekly publication streak going through the end of its 17th year, I would be taking over the illustration duties in Kristin’s absence. Not to suggest my dear wife is at all vain with regard to her artistic ability versus my own, but it was one of the first things she asked about upon her return. “So, how did you let the readers know that
YOU were doing the drawing?” she said after thumbing through the past editions. “Um, well, I didn’t really!” I stammered. “But don’t you figure our readers knew something was up when all of the characters suddenly had balloon-shaped heads, U-shaped eyes and conspicuously absent hands?” The truth was that even though I had actually intended to let readers in on the change, I was so intimidated by the prospect of having to start on the illustration immediately after I was done with the story that I simply forgot to add a little tag saying, “Oh, by the way, sorry for the crappy cartoon. My wife is on vacation.” There actually was to have been a “training period” prior to Kristin’s departure
whereby she would sit with me and convey the basics of drawing figures to vaguely resemble human beings rather than kindergarten stick people. It was presumed she would also teach me how to mix up her watercolors, wet the brushes just so,
and add color to the paper without creating giant puddles. Alas, as is ALWAYS the case around here, Kristin found herself working on other projects right up until the two of them got on the plane. I was therefore left to fig-
ure it out on my own. In retrospect I’ll concede I did a much better job at parenting than cartooning in Kristin’s absence, but I suppose if I was destined to screw up at one or the other, the latter would be a lot easier for her to come home to.

Time to make those New Year’s resolutions Happy New Year! 2014 has arrived! The pork and sauerkraut is in the oven. There are still a few Christmas cookies and buckeyes to finish off. The peanut butter and pecan pies disappeared several days ago. Now it is time to make those New Year’s resolutions, and all over the country one of the very first resolutions many people will make is to diet and lose weight. I have been making this resolution every year
Barbwire Barb Lumley for ages and have never been able to keep it! I certainly wouldn’t want to use a new method of dieting that I just heard about on ABC’s 20/20 program. It is a “tongue patch.” At a cost of $2,000 a mesh patch is surgically attached to the
tongue. The procedure takes about 10 minutes. This patch causes pain and prevents swallowing solid food. For one month the recipient of this patch goes on an 800 calorie liquid diet. It is estimated that there will be a weight loss of 18 to 20 pounds during this time. The patch is removed after 30 days. The procedure is being done by a doctor in California, who says it is life changing. Not all doctors agree!
It seems to me that it would be much more pleasant and cheaper to just follow a healthy diet, eating lots of vegetables, fruits, eggs, lean meats, fish, chicken, drinking milk and exercising. A high protein diet is recommended by most doctors for proper weight loss. While I like vegetables, due to a medication I am on, I am not supposed to eat green vegetables, so my choices are limited. I have never liked carrots
and usually force myself to eat them because I know they are good for me. However, my daughter-in-law, who is a good cook and serves healthy foods, fixed carrots as her vegetable for her Christmas meal. I cautiously took just a few of them, as I expected to not like them. To my surprise, they were delicious and I even went back for seconds. They were the small carrots, cooked in a skillet with one half cup of water until tender,
then seasoned with a teaspoon of cinnamon, one half teaspoon ginger, a couple tablespoons of honey and some butter. They were so good! As I try hard to keep my first New Year’s resolution, I have a new vegetable to make my diet more interesting and help me stick to it. Now all I have to do is try to keep the rest of the resolutions I made. If only I could find a recipe to help me like dusting and cleaning.

Library meets new year with carry-over funds By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer The Board of Trustees for the Holmes District Public Library approved library appropriations for 2014. Library Fiscal Officer Paula Cicconetti presented the board with the library’s estimated revenue versus appropriations for the coming year. The Special Revenue Fund has an estimated carry-over balance of $48,000 for 2014. Appropriations for that fund total $1,000 for 2014, with $500 allotted for books and pamphlets and $500 provided for other necessities. “We aren’t really anticipating a whole lot of expenditures out of that fund,” said Cicconetti, noting that about $38,000 of the special revenue fund was a bequest to the library for special use. The same goes for the Capital Improvements Fund, which has a carryover balance of $383,000. Appropriations for that fund in 2014 include $2,000 for furniture and equipment and $5,000 for
contingencies, “Not necessary for any specific projects but as expenses may perhaps arise throughout the year,” explained Cicconetti. The Automated Library Systems fund will have a carry-over of $72,000, with $8,000 of those funds due to several refunds and reimbursements. “Revenue for this fund comes a little bit of interest and from e-rate reimbursements we receive. We receive roughly 60-70 percent of a refund on our telecommunications costs,” said Cicconetti. These include phone lines at the Central Library and data lines on the Bookmobile and the East Branch. “We also transfer money into the fund from the General Fund.” Appropriations for that fund for 2014 include $250 in property repair and maintenance, $1,000 each in supplies and contingencies, $4,000 in furniture and equipment, $15,000 for furniture and equipment with the Gates Grant and $26,700 for contracts and purchased services.
“The big cost in (contracts and purchased services) is our SEO consortium fees. This year it was $23,000 and barring any increases it will be the same for next year,” said Cicconetti. Other expenses are a data line from the Central Library to the East Branch at $5,400 per year and some maintenance contracts for technology. As for the furniture and equipment with the Gates Grant: “Our head of IT is anticipating that we will need to replace our public PC’s in 2014 because the Windows Operating System that they run on will no longer be supported after next year,” said Cicconetti. The library still has funds remaining from the Gates Grant it received in 2009. The monitors could be retained with only the actual computers needing replacing. “That money would cover the upgrade in PCs,” she said. The Bookmobile Support Fund, the donationgeared fund designated to provide for all bookmo-
bile costs, has an estimated carry-over of $44,000 for 2014. That fund requires $42,500 on the appropriations side, continued expenses include materials such as books, periodicals, audiovisual material, data lines and motor vehicle fuel and maintenance. “We have $2,000 in contingencies since with the bookmobiles getting older, we might have some more repair costs,” said Ciconnetti. “If you compare our carry-over balance with where our appropriations are at, we’re getting pretty close and we can’t appropriate more than what our estimated revenue is. We’re kind of getting down there as the money there will be mostly used up.” That Bookmobile Support Fund was first started in 2008. For the Library’s General Fund, Cicconetti estimates receiving $1 million in Public Library Funds. “We came up with $1 million. We feel that’s not unreasonable based on the revenue we’ve received over the past couple of years. That’s an educated
guess ... that’s subject to change,” she said. For other revenue, the library anticipates receiving $28,000 in patron fines and lost item income. “That’s based on numbers we’ve seen this year so far,” said Cicconetti.
A new item on the revenue list is $1,000 expected to be received through the sale of personal property at the Library’s Surplus Equipment Sale planned for Jan. 31-Feb. 1. See Pg. 16 — LIBRARY

Ohio family pays visit day after Christmas By the time you read this, the holidays will be a distant memory and all the bowl games will be over. We will all be well on our way to a slimmer and trimmer year having disposed of all the cookies, candy, and other temptations associated with the season — either by passing the stuff on to some other gullible soul — or dumping it in the waste basket.
Every House Needs a Green Mouse Carol Kallberg
I don’t know why it is that we only make certain foods at Christmas. I mean would it be wrong to make a fruit cake in July? I know some people
think it’s terrible to make it any time but there are a few of us who really like fruit cake. It would be possible to make some of the cookies during the rest of the year that we condense into one month instead. For example, I love Russian teacakes aka Mexican wedding cakes, or whatever you call them. But,
do I make them in April? No. In fact, this year I didn’t even manage to make them for Christmas. My only cookies were the traditional no bakes that I made for the Ohio grands and their father. Speaking of that group, they made the 11-hour drive all the way down here the day after Christmas and stayed three

cookies on the steps of the huge U.S. Customs building that overlooks the bay. From there we drove over to Mount Pleasant to see some historical military sights and walked down to the beach for a few minutes. That night Robyn made her scrumptious pizza for dinner. The next day we had a big noon meal — stuffed shells, salad and garlic bread, and chocolate cake, followed by a long walk around the subdivision with the entire family, including the four dogs. Then it was back to the house for our white elephant gift exchange. It was lots of fun with sonin-law Jason in charge of the rules. See Pg. 15 — OHIO

Son Alan, daughter-in-law Kris, oldest grand Katie and her husband Josh and their two little dogs Mufasah and Calypso, and twins Sarah and Liz came in two cars so the dogs would have more room to roam. We gave them the grand tour of downtown Charleston, driving down in two vans. We parked at the Battery and walked in the ritzy neighborhood where the houses cost eight million dollars and there are parks with fountains and flowers in bloom. Then we walked through the old slave market — not where they were sold, but where they used to shop. Robyn packed a lunch and we ate our sandwiches and

cle, a soft-top Jeep, tell a slightly different story. They said they were doing donuts in the road and turned around in Park’s yard, had left and were passing by again on the township road when the shot was fired, according to Haun. Charges were filed after the case was reviewed by the Holmes County Prosecutor’s Office. “He fires at their vehicle. He thinks it’s their vehicle. Unbeknownst to him, they’re in a Jeep Wrangler that has a canvas top and plastic windows. They could have been blinded or killed by a stray pellet,” said Prosecutor Steve Knowling, explaining, “The charges fit the situation.” There is only one affirmative defense to shooting someone else, said Knowling. “He has to have a fear he or his family is in danger of physical harm. You do not have the right to use firearms to protect personal property or scare someone away.” Furthermore, Knowling said, “At the time the vic-

He had no idea who was in that vehicle. You have a right to defend yourself, you have a right to defend your family, but you do not have a right to fire warning shots at people,” according to Knowling, who said Park has no prior criminal record. The Sheriff’s Office learned of the shooting after the vehicle, observed traveling at 85 mph, failed to stop for a deputy on state Route 39. The Jeep ran over tire deflation devices and continued traveling to Pomerene Hospital with at least one flat tire before officers were able to make contact
with the occupants, said Haun. That’s when they discovered the driver, a 29-yearold Killbuck man, and his passenger, a 28-year-old Millersburg man, had both sustained injuries from the buck shot. Transferred to Aultman Hospital, both men were treated and discharged in short order. The men initially told investigators they’d been drinking and didn’t know where they were when they’d been shot. The investigation continues and potential drunken driving charges may be filed pending the results of lab tests. Reporter Christine L. Pratt can be reached at 330-674-5676 or cpratt@ the-daily-record.com.

Sugarcreek I’m back in the saddle after a brief respite Kevin Lynch Staff Writer
I watched the Lady Knights manhandle Mansfield. I forgot how good this team was until I saw them pick apart a pretty good team. The Lady Tygers came into the game sporting an 8-1 record, featuring a highly touted freshman guard, combined with some size and plenty of athleticism. But before the Tygers knew what hit them, West Holmes was ahead 11-0 en route to a 53-point blowout. West Holmes’ defense simply stymied the Tygers. And it was done without the vaunted full-court press the Knights usually employ. They played a

stifling half-court manto-man and seamlessly switched to zone that completely befuddled Mansfield. Laina Snyder enjoyed a career-high 30-point game, scoring at will inside and out. She had plenty of help, too, as Brittleigh Macaulay displayed some nice shooting range, dropping in a 3-pointer. It must be pretty disheartening for opponents to
see a pair of 6-foot post players stepping out and drilling 3-pointers as Macaulay and Snyder did for West Holmes. The Knights displayed their depth as well. Alex Brown filled in admirably at point guard after Emily Molnar picked up her second foul in the first quarter. Brown has displayed great shooting touch along with her fine ball-handling skills,

There’s nothing like a little time away from the job to make one appreciate what one does for a living. Thanks to some strategic planning, I was able to stretch four vacation days and a couple of holidays into a two-week vacation. Then, when I was scheduled to come back to work and cover an event, Mother Nature threw a wrench into things by piling up the white stuff and forcing the postponement of the event I was to attend. When I got back to covering games, I was afraid I wouldn’t remember how to write a game story, but it all came back to me quickly as I cranked out a couple hundred words about the Mansfield Tygers basketball team’s demolition of Orrvlle Friday night. Then, on Saturday,

Two Knights earn podium finishes at MIT Cody Woods and Grayson Miller earned podium finishes at the 44-team Medina Invitational. Woods, a freshman 106-pounder, and senior Grayson Miller (195) took their places on the podium during the awards ceremony Saturday, Dec. 28, at the 39th Annual Medina Invitational Tournament held at Medina High School in Medina, Ohio. Woods and Miller, along with sophomore Cole Woods (120) were the only Knights wrestlers to survive Friday’s gauntlet at the M.I.T. and move on to second-day action at what is arguably one of Ohio’s toughest high school wrestling tournaments. Only Cody Woods and Miller made it to the placement rounds as both wrestlers ended their weekend with eighth-place finishes and 2-3 records. Cody Woods received an opening round bye, then knocked off No. 5 seed Tyler Capodice (Soph., Sandusky Per-
kins) by fall to reach Friday night’s quarterfinals bout. Woods dropped that match by fall to No. 4 seed Noah Buaghman (Soph., Wadsworth) dropping into Saturday’s consolation rounds. Woods guaranteed placement as the freshman knocked off Dalton Leightner (Fr., Rootstown) by decision. However, he would lose the consolation quarterfinals match-up by major decision to Connor Behem (Jr., RichmondMI) and then drop the seventh-place match to Justin McNeely (Soph., Brunswick) by fall. Miller’s route to his 8th-place finish mirrored that of his freshman
teammate. After an opening-round bye, Miller (No. 8 seed) scored a major decision victory over Matthew Brady (Jr., Beavercreek) before dropping a decision to No.1 seed Nick Giese (Jr., Detroit Catholic Central-MI) and moved to the wrestlebacks. Miller scored a fall win Saturday morning over Michael Delsanter (Jr., Hudson) to lock up a placement spot. Miller lost by decision to John Parker (Sr., Sandusky Perkins), the No. 5 seed, and then lost by decision to Clayton Brandeburg (Sr., Wadsworth). Cole Woods earned a No. 6 seed but was upset in the opening round Fri-
day, meaning a long road ahead in the consolation bracket. The returning state qualifier for the Knights rallied with three wins before suffering a major decision loss in the ‘go to’ placement rounds match to No. 7 seed Parker O’Brien (Sr., Detroit Catholic Central-MI) to fall from the tournament with a 3-2 mark, and no placement. Knowing his troops would be going through a meat-grinder of a tournament, Knights wres-
tling head coach Jeff Woods was happy with the outcome. “It is always great when a freshman can place at this tournament,” Woods said. “It’s a big deal when we have a wrestler place at this tournament. Walking out of here with two placers is a pretty decent weekend.” Posting 1-2 records were Josiah Allison (Soph., 126), Chase Campbell (Jr., 138), Ricky Dutter (Soph., 160) and Damon Harris (Soph., 220).
Mitch Tyson (Soph., 113), Jed Hendershott (Soph., 13), Jake Mullet (Fr., 145), Caleb Cox (Sr., 152), Tyler McElroy (Sr., 170 ), Zach Mullet (Sr., 182) and Justin Markley (Sr., 285) all finished 0-2. As a team, the Knights recorded 38 points good for a 31st-place finish in the 44-team tournament. Massillon Perry (233 pts.) won the tournament with Lakewood St. Edward just nipping Uhrichsville Claymont for runner-up honors, 200 to 199.

SPORTS FANS! The NFL doesn’t keep records on betting lines, nor do the Las Vegas sports books, but as best anybody can remember, the most lopsided line in history occurred in 2013, when the then-winless Jaguars faced the then-undefeated Broncos, who were favored by up to 28 points. That broke the previously accepted high of 26 points when the mighty Steelers played the lowly Buccaneers back in 1976. The Jags covered, losing “only” 35-19, but alas, the Bucs did not, getting shellacked 42-0 en route to a miserable 0-14 season. According to the NFL Hall of Fame, 348 sets of brothers have played in the league as of the 2013 season. Of those, only seven had three brothers on active rosters at the same time. Of those seven, the brothers Geathers – Robert Jr., Clifton and Kwame – are the only threesome fathered by a former NFL player, Robert Sr. The Matthews clan actually boasts a greater dynasty – five NFL players over three generations and counting – but the Geathers family holds the second-generation, three-at-one-time distinction. Surprisingly perhaps, only three NBA players have fathered more than one son who played in the league – Rick Barry and his sons Jon, Brent and Drew; Jim Paxson Sr. and his sons Jim Jr. and John; and Mychal Thompson and his two boys Mychel and Klay. One other family was fighting to become the fourth when 2013 season began. Dell Curry’s son Steph was already a member of the Golden State Warriors, while his brother Seth was the team’s final cut at the end of training camp. Stay tuned.
