Stacy Hamsher and Jennifer Lang, Tuscarawas County, a pair of parents interested in sharing their knowledge of Common Core and problems they say it causes through federally mandated testing, spoke to more than 60 Holmes County residents Thursday evening in the conference center of the Comfort Inn Hotel. Also part of the presentation was state Rep. Andy Thompson, author of House Bill 7 and a member

of the Ohio State House Education Committee. His bill passed the house 96-0. A summary of HB7 prohibits 2014-15 Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) scores from being used for promotion or retention in a child’s education career. It also provides an option to take end-of-course (EOC) exams at any time within the student’s high school career, or opting to never take EOC exams,

instead choosing one of the other options to earn their high school diploma. “We firmly believe that the education of our children is something we need to protect,” Hamsher said. “How our children are taught today is how they are going to live and think tomorrow. Our children’s education is the foundation for the future of our families, our state and our nation. “Jenny and I are two parents who heard about

this thing called Common Core, so we decided to check it out,” Hamsher continued. “What we’ve found has made us frustrated, mad, and left us wanting to change things.” She said the goal is to take back local control of education. They fully support teachers. “Our issue is not with teachers or administrators,” Hamsher said. “It is with the system they have been forced to conform to, a system that puts individuals’ and parents’ rights last on the priority list. We want to put control back in the hands of parents, and our kids back at the top.” Hamsher said she believes Ohio was bribed by $4 million to adopt the Common Core Standards before they were even printed. The initiatives encompass four things — math, English testing, PARCC testing, loss of privacy and teacher evaluations. “Many federal attempts to overtake education have been thwarted when the citizens have found out about it,” she said. “Because of that history, that’s why they changed how they brought Race to the Top and Common Core into effect. Community Church notes Community Lenten services Beginning on Ash Wednesday and continuing on Wednesdays during Lent, the Shreve area churches will be holding Soup and Bread Fellowship from 6-7 p.m. This year’s offering has been designated for MOCA House, Wooster, and Shreve Community Vacation Bible School. Host church schedule is: Feb. 25, Shreve Presbyterian; March 4, Shreve Christian (Disciples of Christ); March 11, Hopewell Presbyterian; March 18, United Methodist; March 25, St. Joseph Advent Catholic at Shreve Presbyterian.

Senior citizens to hear the adventure On Aug. 14, 2011 Jon Detweiler and Ben Swartz began a canoe trip from Sugar Creek, a small stream in Dalton, to the Gulf of Mexico, just below New Orleans. The trip, just shy of 2,000 miles, encompassed five connecting rivers and 10 states. Over the 2½ month trip, Ben and Jon raised money to support IRIS Ministries in Mozambique, Africa. IRIS supports nearly 1,000 children around the world and equips African pastors through schooling, among other projects. Detweiler and Swartz

have a heart for the poor and marginalized and wanted to use the finances raised to help bring about the Kingdom of God in Mozambique. The two men finished their trip on Nov. 2, 2011 and have quite a story to tell — “Sugar to Salt.” “Something for Seniors” is a time for senior citizens to come together and make new friends and connect with old friends. On Tuesday, Feb. 24 senior citizens are invited to come to Fairlawn Mennonite Church anytime between 9-10 a.m. to enjoy coffee or tea. Take a friend to see and hear “Sugar to Salt” presented at 10 a.m. If you would like more information, call Clair Bixler at 330-682-5183. Fairlawn Church is located at 8520 Emerson Road, Apple Creek between Dover Road (U.S. Route 250) and Carr Road and is handicap accessible. All senior citizens are invited to come and enjoy this event.

The brunch is $10 inclusive. For reservations by Feb. 27, call 330-473-2767 or 330-343-7046; email to dawdys@embarqmail.com CWC in the memoline, or hccwclub@yahoo.com. Last minute guests are welcome. In case of bad weather check with either of the above numbers, Der Dutchman at 330893-2981 or information number below. If schools are closed, meeting will be cancelled. Bible Study will resume March 12 in the Millersburg Presbyterian Church at 9:30 a.m. The April 7 meeting will feature Pastor Mark Behrendt of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Walnut Creek. For more information call 330-674-7723 or email dawdys@embarqmail.com.

the Common Core, but it sure looks like a bribe. In order to get federal funding, schools have to adopt federal tests. And those federal tests dictate what kids are being taught in the classroom, she said. There were only two federally funded testing consortiums provided to choose from to provide the tests. Ohio chose PARCC. There is no reliable information available to prove how these tests will play out long term, Hamsher said. Lang and Hamsher took turns breaking down the tests, talking about the content for the English part and math techniques. Garaway school board president Robert Coburn was part of the panel. His

district was a fore-runner in getting on board with Common Core. “We would love to see this many people show up at our board meetings,” Coburn said. “We would know that you’re engaged in what we’re doing. Coburn said teachers in the Garaway District felt students were being handcuffed by new rules and regulations. “Teaching to the test has become an objective that does not allow any kids to explore learning outside the box,” he said. “Our teachers have estimated that 80 percent of education conducted inside their classroom is assessment-based education, jumping to 100 percent in the months leading up to

the tests. “We need to be in the business of creating great thinkers. But with all this stuff we’ve heard tonight, we’re in the business of creating great test takers,” Coburn added.”This onesize-fits-all common core culture discourages creativity. Teachers are being forced to teach things they really don’t believe in. Teachers who fail to follow the agenda are faced with threats and intimidation.” He explained how a math teacher in the district was having so much trouble getting students to understand the new techniques being taught to help prepare for the tests, the teacher independently problem-solved and went

back to the old style of teaching. When the administration heard about the teacher’s rebellion, the teacher received an ultimatum in front of a classroom full of elementary students: Teach the new curriculum or we’ll find somebody who will. Someone in the audience asked what the governor’s view on Common Core. “When this came into Ohio, we didn’t understand what we were getting ourselves into,” Thompson said. “I figured out finally what this is all about and I’m doing what I can to protect parents and students, and restore local control to Ohio. I think that would be a very

helpful thing for (the governor) to do. I think he’s still got time to do that. “When HB 7 comes across his desk, he’ll have a chance to reflect on where we’ve put the state of Ohio,” Thompson continued. “He doesn’t like people telling him he might’ve made a mistake in embracing this. I always try to be reflective myself, and give people an opportunity to change their minds. Gov. Lewis once said, ‘We all want progress, but if you’re going down the wrong road, progress is turning around and going back in the other direction. The one who turns around the quickest is the most progressive,’” Hamsher continued. She said it is unknown who wrote the Common Core Initiative Standards, but based upon the testing format, questions and curriculum, “it is apparent it was not written by teachers of children.” Hamsher adds the federal government didn’t mandate each state adopt

o you pray weekly? Daily? Twice a day? Or like many of us, only when all else fails? The Bible tells us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)…not three or four times a week like exercising, nor once a month like fertilizing the garden…but continuously. Sound impossible? Here’s how: as you attend God’s house each week, learn how prayer is essential to your daily life, how it can become as automatic as breathing, and how you can focus on prayer. All you need is practice! Talk to God at your house of worship and every day, make Him part of your routine.

Protein Packed Energy Bites In a food processor, combine the quinoa flakes, chia seeds, hemp hearts and cinnamon together. Pulse a few times. Then add the dates and the coconut oil. You will see the mixture start to clump together. If it looks a tad dry, you can add a little water too. Roll into balls. The mixture will feel a little loose, but I promise it firms up in the fridge. Place on a parchment lined plate in the fridge to firm up. It should take about 30 minutes.

Sub-District Parliamentary Procedure

SUB-DISTRICT PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE — West Holmes FFA Chapter Senior Parliamentary Procedure team placed third at the sub district Parliamentary Procedure contest at Indian Valley High School on Nov. 20. Team members were Marris Hoffee, president; Regina Miller, vice president; Juanita Miller, secretary; Jaeden Roloff, treasurer; Payten Boring, reporter; Alyx Morris, sentinel; Cade Patterson, student advisor; Jarrett Snow, member, and alternate, Kara Leadbetter. In the Parliamentary Procedure contest, the team takes a test and demonstrates its knowledge of basic parliamentary law and how to use it correctly during the course of a business meeting. Pictured are Kara Leadbetter (left), Jarrett Snow, Juanita Miller, Payten Boring, Cade Patterson, Marris Hoffee, Jaeden Roloff, Alyx Morris and Regina Miller.

Blues (From Page 12) A dog’s sense of smell is about 1000 times better than a person’s. Greyhounds have the best eyesight. The bloodhound is the only animal whose evidence is admissible in an American court. The smartest dogs are: (1) Border Collie (2) Poodle (3) Golden Retriever. There never was a pony in the Pony Express, only horses. A toaster uses almost half as much energy as a fullsized oven.An apple, a potato, and an onion all taste the same if you eat them with your nose plugged. (I am going to have to test that one!) Canada is an Indian word meaning “Big Village.” An earthquake on December 16, 1811 caused the Mississippi River to run backwards. Babe Ruth wore a cabbage leaf under his cap to keep him cool. He changed it every two innings. There are more than one million animal species on earth. A cow cannot vomit. (But once in a while she can cough while chewing her cud and you don’t want to be in the line of fire!) Cows can kick both backward

and to the side. (Whoever checked on this fact never milked a Paclamar Bootmaker daughter, some of them could kick seven ways from Sunday!) It is possible to lead a cow upstairs, but not downstairs. (I once had one in the hay mow!) Studies have shown that classical music helps cows

to produce more milk. The first cow arrived in the Jamestown colony in 1611. Twelve or more cows are known as a “flunk.” (Wonder where that word came from?) So there you are, a few “fun facts” to take your mind off the weather. I hope it worked!

A ski trip’s avalanche of lemonade

“Some weeks, the columns just write themKarrie selves.” McAllister Those were the words I said to some strangers Dirt Don’t on a chair lift in below Hurt zero temperature through snot-frozen face masks and goggles. family ski vacation this We decided to take a year in lieu of Christmas

presents to each other, but seeing that this fun winter sport costs more than a cruise around the world, we also spent plenty of nights eating noodles and playing card games. (We actually like those things — I’m not complaining.) Being our first full family ski trip, I really talked it up, telling the kids about how magical the village is at night, with lights and music that makes you feel much younger than you are. There’s a faint smell of a woodfire in the air and a super cool vibe that just makes you want to live life and drop everything to become a ski bum. “You’ll never want to leave! It’s the best!”

And then we actually started heading to the mountains. There are times in one’s life when the saying “when life gives you lemons…” comes into play. This was one of those times. It felt like we had gallons of lemonade. First night into the trip, I awoke abruptly in the hotel room to the sounds every parent dreads. The sound of a vomiting child. “Mom, I saw you leap 12 feet across the room,” said an on-looking sibling. And so it began, our trip to West Virginia with a car packed full of skis, barf bags and a stomach virus. “Lemonade,” we reminded ourselves. Let’s

make the best of it. My husband and I took turns playing the roles of ski guide and nurse, and I re-earned my motherhood badge of honor by catching things in my bare hands that should never actually touch human flesh. And then, one brief afternoon, the entire family was up and happy and despite the winter weather warning and wind chill advisory, we had a great time. “It’s all worth it,” we said. “This is great! Best vacation ever!” We spent the evening eating noodles and playing cards next to the little electric fireplace in our room. Life was good. Lemons, be gone. And then, the third

night into our ski trip, I awoke abruptly in the hotel room to another set of dreaded sounds. I must be dreaming, I thought, this must be a nightmare. Sadly, it wasn’t a dream. Sadly, my children like to share. And so it began again, our turn-taking of nurse and ski guide through the winter storm that took the wind chill to nearly -40 degrees. “Mom, we’re just making memories,” said the one kid who stayed healthy (at the time of this writing.) Making memories, yes. Barely making lemonade, definitely. Stop by and say hi at www.karriemcallister.com.

There are no Schrock or Mullet Cabinet Companies here. All the kitchen and bathroom cabinets are junk compared to what we had in Ohio and took for granted. The doors and fronts on things are real wood, however poor quality, but the insides are made of some kind of cheap composite. The cupboards hold our stuff and work OK, but we just miss that feeling of good hard wood. Every day in our newspaper there are articles and editorials about the same things. Someone is always shooting someone

else. It’s usually family members killing one another, or a drug deal gone bad. Many of these shootings happen outside nightclubs in the wee hours of the morning. (I once had a boyfriend who told me nothing good happened after midnight, and he was right.) The other themes are about what to do with all these annoying tourists on the roads, or the cost of repairing the pot holes. Yoder named manager at Schrock’s Heritage Furniture

(From Page 16)

Owen Yoder has been hired as manager at Schrock’s Heritage Furniture in Berlin. Yoder has served as merchandise manager at Save & Serve Thrift Store in Millersburg. He has previous experience in the construction

industry including 11 years at Holmes Lumber, where he provided support to the sales team and supervision of delivery of building materials to commercial construction projects. Yoder is excited about the potential at Schrock’s and his initiation into the furniture industry. “Potential is huge with our location — the team that we have, the quality that we have, the customer base we have,” he said.

Charleston is a few years behind in handling things regarding parking once you manage to arrive in the city. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants, with more being built every day, so they must want people to come. The locals who live in the city, but are not in any kind of tourist related business,

Duty eventually did call and said, be in Virginia on a Wednesday morning in the dead of winter if you want to see your daughter. She’ll be graduating at 10 a.m. and moving on 10 minutes later. So much for the “hurry up and wait” culture of the military that my dad used to laugh about. With winter storms swirling both fore and aft we set out from Ohio after work on Tuesday and drove from day into night, finally rolling up to the outskirts of Fort Lee in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. After sleeping all of three hours we marched out to base for the graduation ceremony. That type of stuff will never get old for us and I would have gladly attended on no sleep at all should the need have arisen. The balance of the day, however, was a different story. We immediately left the beautiful, dare I say “semi-rural” surroundings of Fort Lee to put our lives on the line of a pine-lined, four-lane dragstrip known as Interstate 95. Several harrowing hours later we arrived at our destination

on the coastal plain of North Carolina—where spring spends the winter. After a 36-hour flurry of moving, unpacking, shopping, assembling and decorating (along with an occasional but brief foray out into sunnyand-60 weather) we were back in car for the long, silent and sad ride home having left our sunshine, both literal and figurative, behind. (Good luck in your new home at Fort Bragg, Charlotte! We’ll see you again soon!)

Wooster adds to West Holmes’ losing skid By RANDY WORRELL Sports Staff WOOSTER — As the old saying goes, something had to give. When the West Holmes and Wooster boys basketball teams collided Feb 10, the Ohio Cardinal Conference rivals had combined to lose 11 straight contests, with the Knights’ recent tailspin at seven games and the Generals not tasting victory since a Jan. 24 win at Lexington. Wooster played a little less give-away to stop its nosedive. Drew Wharton scored 18 points, and Cam Daugherty tallied 16 and grabbed 11 rebounds as Wooster stopped its fourgame skid with a 66-45 win over West Holmes at Wooster High School. Keven Schilling and Nick Koontz each added 11 points for the Generals (10-8, 7-6 OCC), while Josh Neer scored 10 for the Knights (6-13, 2-9). It’s been anything but fun for West Holmes during its recent slide, which saw the Knights lose some tough games of their own, including a last-minute setback last Friday to league-leading Ashland. Trailing 12-7 midway through Tuesday’s first quarter, West Holmes rallied to take a 13-12 lead at the end of the period on a Nate Hall bucket at the buzzer. Unfortunately for the Knights, though, it was their only lead of the night. Wooster scored the first six points of the second quarter to take an 18-13 lead, and led 28-24 at the break. Although West Holmes shot 55 percent (10 of 18) in the opening half, 12 first-half turnovers were

WH turned the ball over on its first three possessions of the third quarter as well, digging a 36-24 hole on the scoreboard with 4:21 left. WH finished the night with 23 miscues, leading to 17 Wooster points. “For whatever reason, we just weren’t mentally in to it tonight, and at this stage of the season, that shouldn’t be happening,” West Holmes coach Keith Troyer said. “Even though we shot a good percentage in the opening half, we turned the ball over too many times, and the turn-

overs weren’t forced, just mental mistakes. “But, that’s been a problem all year. We also gave up a lot of transition baskets, too, which is also just a lack of mental focus. We aren’t talking on defense when getting back, we aren’t picking up the open guy. To be honest, we just aren’t very tough mentally right now.” West Holmes, however, cut the Wooster lead to 36-30 on back-to-back 3s from Neer and Josh Wells with 3:55 left in the third. Wooster recovered with a 9-2 run to lead 45-32 at the 1:13 mark.

SPORTS FANS! Forget ultimate game tickets, forget Conference Championship game tickets, how about just second round playoff tickets? If you had wanted to rent a 10-person suite at Lambeau Field for the Packers-Cowboys playoff game, it could have been yours for a mere $19,195. By the way,in that same playoff round, when Andrew Luck’s Colts upset Peyton Manning’s Broncos, it marked the first time in history that two sons of NFL quarterbacks (Oliver Luck and Archie Manning) face each other in the playoffs. The 2014 Steelers did on offense what no NFL team had ever done before: a 4,500-yard passer (Ben Roethlisberger finished with 4,952), a 1,500-yard receiver (Antonio Brown at 1,698) and a 1,300yard rusher (Le’Veon Bell at 1,361). But it’s a long way to the Hall of Fame. Only three teams in history sported Hall of Famers at those three positions at the same time – the 1979 Steelers (Terry Bradshaw, John Stallworth and Franco Harris), and – in the same year – the ‘91 Bills (Jim Kelly, Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas), and the ‘91 Cowboys (Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith). On the other end of the spectrum are the Jaguars and Browns. When Jacksonville was favored to beat Tennessee at the end of the 2014 season, it broke a string of 42 straight games in which the Jags had been the underdogs. As for Cleveland, when Connor Shaw started at quarterback in Baltimore to end the season, he became the 22nd starting QB since the Beowns returned to the NFL in 1999.

New deer proposals aimed at stabilizing the herd By ART HOLDEN Outdoor Editor COLUMBUS — Less deer killed will eventually put more hooves on the landscape is one way to view the recently submitted 2015-16 deer regulations, which were presented to the Ohio Wildlife

Council last week. Coming off the lowest deer harvest total (175,745) since 2001 (165,124), the Ohio Division of Wildlife set its regulations to potentially have even fewer whitetails harvested this coming year. “We’re responding to the

concern being raised by deer hunters not to overshoot the herd,” said Division of Wildlife chief Scott Zody in a conference call with outdoor media members from across the state. “These regulations are (designed to stabilize) the herd rather than go too far in either direction.”

New deer hunting regulations for the 2015-16 season call for moving the youth season to the second weekend in October, and adding two gun-hunting days during the Christmas break. The Division of Wildlife is hoping the changes will improve opportunities for Ohio’s young hunters, such as Mason Taylor, 9, who shot this nice 10-point buck during the youth season this past November in Holmes County. • Move youth-gun hunting to the Saturday and Sunday formerly occupied by the antlerless-only muzzleloader weekend. • Add one straight-

Zody noted that further changes are on the horizon, with this coming summer’s deer survey, which will be sent randomly to 40,000 Ohio hunters and farmers, helping to form management plans going forward. That, and sportsmen’s responses to this year’s regulations. And the best way to have a voice in Ohio’s deer hunting future is to attend one of the state’s five upcoming open house meetings, with the closest for Holmes County Shopper-area readers scheduled for Saturday, March 7 from noon-3 p.m. at the District Three headquarters in Akron (912 Portage Lakes Dr.). “We’re now seeking input from the sportsmen,” said Zody. “Apathy is sportsmen’s greatest (undoing). Show up, speak up and be heard.” The following regulation changes were sent to the Wildlife Council: • Reduce bag limits in the majority of counties, and remove antlerless permits in all but 10 counties. No county has a proposed bag limit increase. • Reduce the statewide bag limit of deer from nine to six. • Suspend the antlerlessonly muzzleloader weekend. • Offer two days of deergun hunting Dec. 26-27, 2015.

Neel Summers, 84 Neel Summers passed away at his home in Wooster, Monday, Feb. 9, 2015. He was 84 years old. Surviving are is wife, Elsie Summers, to whom he was happily married for almost 50 years, as their golden wedding anniversary was set to take place later this year. He and Elsie had two sons, Greg, who lives presently in Wisconsin with his wife and two children; and Brian and his loving family who live in Ohio. Neel was born in Wallback, Clay County, W.Va., the son of William Summers and Lula James. He grew up in West Virginia during the 1930s and 1940s and was always intensely proud of his upbringing, despite the relative hardships of the era. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 195254, and spent the vast majority of his service stationed in West Germany. During the course of this service to his country, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Moreover, in recognition of Neel’s time in the military, he was very recently privileged to participate with many of his fellow veterans in an Honor Flight to visit the various war memorials in Washington, D.C. in June 2014. Following his military

service, he earned a bachelor of arts in education from Glenville State College in 1957, a master of arts in English from Marshall University in 1960 and a master of education degree from Miami (Ohio) University in 1969. After finishing his educational endeavors, he lived most of his adult life in a home he built with his family in the picturesque rolling countryside of Holmes County before moving to Wayne County in his later years. Neel devoted the whole of his professional career to the education of children with a special emphasis on teaching those children about the outdoors and the conservation of the natural environment that he so passionately loved. He began his career as a fifth grade teacher at Holmesville Elementary School in 1957. By 1972, he was named the principal of Holmesville Elementary, and he would continue in that cherished role until his retirement in 1997. Neel was a consummate educator. He cared deeply about each one of his students, and he especially loved helping them learn. He was beloved by the many professional colleagues with whom he worked over the years and respected by the local community he served.

Among his proudest achievements was the lasting work he did in the field of outdoor education. His great passion in this area was birds, and he was a font of knowledge regarding their varieties, songs, and nesting habits. An “environmentalist” long before the term became commonplace, he served as co-director of the Outdoor Education program for sixth graders in the Southeast Local School District. The week-long camp became a time-honored tradition within the school district, an annual experience held every spring at nearby Camp Wanake that touched the lives of generations of sixth grade students who participated through the years. In addition, Neel helped to build a land laboratory on the grounds of Holmesville Elementary that remains in use to this day and which was renamed as the “Neel Summers Land Lab” in his honor upon his retirement as the school principal. In his personal time, Neel was also a long-time volunteer for The Wilderness Center in Wilmot, and the Friends of Wooster Memorial Park in Wooster. He taught nature classes for many years through the Wayne County Enrichment Academy. Neel had three siblings,

Rader (deceased), Curwood (deceased) and Lewis, who still lives in North Carolina. The family would like to extend a heartfelt expression of gratitude to the nurses, aides and volunteers of LifeCare Hospice in Wooster, for their wonderful care and support. A celebration of life service of Neel’s life will be held at a future date at Holmesville Elementary School in Holmesville. The details of the memorial service will be forthcoming in The Daily Record and on the memorial website being created by Custer-Glenn Funeral Home at www.custerglenn.com where interested individuals may also share a memory. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that anyone wishing to do so may make a donation in Neel’s memory to The Wilderness Center in Wilmot, or Friends of Wooster Memorial Park in Wooster.

Deer (From Page 20) youth deer-gun seasons. Deer regulations have been trending toward reduced bag limits and restricted use of antlerless permits in recent years. Proposals to reduce bag limits and adjust hunting seasons work to stabilize deer populations. Overview of proposed hunting seasons for 20152016: • Deer archery: Sept. 26, 2015-Feb. 7, 2016 • Youth deer gun: Oct. 10-11, 2015 • Deer gun: Nov. 30-Dec. 6, 2015; Dec. 26-27, 2015 • Deer muzzleloader: Jan. 2-5, 2016 • Proposed county bag limits: n No more than two either-sex deer permits: Athens, Auglaize, Belmont, Butler, Carroll, Champaign, Clark, Clinton, Coshocton, Darke, Erie, Fairfield, Fayette, Gallia, Geauga, Greene, Guernsey, Hancock, Harrison, Hocking, Jackson, Jefferson, Law-

rence, Madison, Meigs, Mercer, Miami, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Morrow, Muskingum, Noble, Ottawa, Perry, Pickaway, Preble, Sandusky, Shelby, Tuscarawas, Van Wert, Vinton, Warren, Washington and Wood. It was proposed that antlerless permits are not valid in these counties. n No more than three either-sex deer permits: Adams, Allen, Ashland, Ashtabula, Brown, Clermont, Columbiana, Crawford, Defiance, Fulton, Hardin, Henry, Highland, Holmes, Huron, Knox, Licking, Logan, Mahoning, Marion, Medina, Paulding, Pike, Putnam, Richland, Ross, Scioto, Seneca, Trumbull, Union, Wayne, Williams and Wyandot. either-sex permits, or three either-sex permits and one antlerless permit: Cuyahoga, Delaware, Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas and Summit. n The statewide bag limit was proposed to be six deer, a reduction from the statewide limit of nine deer last season. Only one deer may be antlered, and a hunter cannot exceed a county bag limit. Antlerless permits may be used from Sept. 26 through Nov. 29, 2015. Moving the youth season to the “suspended” early muzzleloader season will hopefully encourage more youth to hunt because of the better weather conditions. “We’re not abandoning (the early muzzleloader) season, we’re putting it on hiatus,” said Zody. “We have the right to bring it back in the future.” The additional two gunhunting days in December is intended to take advantage of kids being off school, making it a “good family opportunity.”

During the conference call, some voiced concerns that the Dec. 26-27 added gun days were too close to the Jan. 2-5 muzzleloader season, and those are perfect examples of regulations that sportsmen can agree or disagree with by making their opinions heard. Ohio is moving toward deer management units, regulating the herd by like habitat, landscapes and number of deer on that landscape. It’s the state’s progression from zones, to 88 county regulations, to what’s expected to be 25-27 management units. “They’ll be separated by roads and rivers,” said Dave Kohler, executive administrator for wildlife management and research, noting counties can, and will be, split because of the landscape factors within a county. “The next two years we’re going to move to the deer management unit concept … and that change is going to take a lot of education,” said Zody.
