HEAP helps with household heating costs

Appreciates responders’ compassion

The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission’s Emergency HEAP program is underway. Emergency HEAP is a federally funded program administered by the Ohio Development Services Agency, Office of Community Assistance that provides financial assistance to low-income households that are threatened with disconnection from their heating source, or have already had service disconnected. Those households serviced by a PUCO-regulated utility are encouraged to sign up for the Percentage of Income Payment Plus Plan (PIPP Plus) or an alternate budget payment plan in order to receive energy assistance. Households utilizing bulk fuel must have a tank containing less than 25 percent of its capacity. Income documentation for all household members along with social security numbers, electric and gas bills, proof of disability if disabled, and other documentation must be presented at the appointment. Income guidelines are based at 175

Editor: There have been many changes during my lifetime. Some good and some not so good, but one thing has stayed constant in my many years of experience. Holmes County is a great place to hang your hat. I recently caused an accident and by God’s grace no one was badly hurt, however, I was pretty shaken up. The Millersburg Police Department and Holmes Fire District 1 personnel promptly responded, providing their services with

outstanding professionalism and with compassion. This is one small acknowledgement of the many times their performances makes our community a memorable place to live and a heartfelt thank you for the respect I personally was shown for my past service. I will soon again be leaving for Florida. I leave knowing my family is in good hands. Again, sincerely thank you. Maynard Mohr Millersburg

How the Grinch stole my Thanksgiving A writer friend and I were having a beer and fell into a great riff of one-liners. I had heard him bust on his motherin-law as part of his stand-up comedy act and I let him know how thoroughly I could identify with his pain. We pronounced ourselves kindred spirits and it was game-on from there on out. I’m guessing that we may have actually set some sort of record in our exhaustive comedic discussion of the topic, and the greatest part of the whole thing was that every bit of it was truth! I know, I know, mothers-in-law come in all different flavors and there are probably just as many good ones as there are bad. As a mat-

filled with Mom’s incredible turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. own gathering become smaller and smaller as my siblings “sacrificed” Thanksgiving to their inlaws in order to lock-in Christmas Day for the Lorson clan. What I never saw coming was the starched tablecloth, linen napkins and the expectation that if the whole thing didn’t come off exactly like the Norman Rockwell painting we had all failed. It was an uptight mess of an affair. If I were to pen a children’s story of the adventure it would be called “How the Grinch Stole My Thanksgiving.” From that point forward I’ve looked for an out on Thanksgiving each year. This time around for instance we traveled across the state to visit with Kris-

from their home. No muss, no fuss, no mother-in-law. I doubt that I could possibly be more thankful!

Tickets available for Tusc Philharmonic Christmas concert The Tuscarawas Philharmonic will once again bring to the stage a charming musical mix of Christmas tradition, children, and a generous dose of nostalgia delivered in delightful bright new wrapping paper. On Saturday, Dec. 12, the orchestra’s traditional Yuletide Celebration concert, titled “Christmas Down The Years,” will feature the annual appearance of the Philharmonic Children’s Chorus and also the High School Women’s Honors Chorus. A special highlight of the program will be Dover native and well-known baritone Ron Barkett. The Women’s Honors Chorus, directed by Shawna Hinkle, is comprised of students from several area high schools. They will perform three numbers alone and will join the Children’s Chorus and orchestra on several pieces. Members of the Great-

er Tuscarawas Children’s Chorus, Carolyn Wallace, director, will also assist. The concert program will offer audience members a chance to take a break from the frenzy of the seasonal preparations and just relax and enjoy many orchestral and choral favorites, such as Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” and John Williams’ “Somewhere In My Memory” from the movie “Home Alone.” Others have become Philharmonic traditions—among them, Pigs Could Fly and Marvelous Toy. Glenn Mears and Dr. Renee Miskimmin are the Guarantor for the 7:30 p.m. concert at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas: Sponsor is Dover Chemical Corp. and co-sponsors are Marlowe’s Compounding Pharmacy, The New Philadelphia Kiwanis Club, Dover High Tri-M Chapter, and Ronald

Farming Feed bunk and water trough management The current low milk price combined with milk production costs are a cause for concern on many dairy farms. With no control over the base milk price, dairy farmers need to be looking at production costs and management practices to improve the bottom line. Recently I was reviewing some dairy notes from dairy Extension specialists at the University of Kentucky that focused on feed bunk and water trough management. I’ll summarize some of the information in those notes. Attention to these topics could help to improve production and possibly even impact herd health. One size definitely does not fit all on the dairy farm. There should be rations balanced for the dietary needs of lactating cows, dry cows, heifers and calves. Within the lactating cows there are differing dietary needs depending upon production level and stage of production. Being able to group and feed those groups separately can help to improve production and can save some dollars. Working closely with a herd nutritionist to regularly review rations and make appropriate

changes as forage quality and type changes is important. Make sure cows have adequate feed bunk and water trough space so they have access to and can consume adequate amounts of a properly balanced ration and drink enough water. Fresh cows should have 36 inches if an open feed bunk is used or 30 inches with headlocks. Later lactation cows need 18-24 inches of space. Dry cows, especially as they get close to calving, require about 36 inches of feed bunk space/animal because of their body width. Milk is 87 percent water on average and lactating dairy cows require 4.5-5 pounds of water per pound of milk produced. This amount of water comes both from moisture in the See Pg. 12 — FEED

feedstuffs and from drinking water. There should be a minimum of 3 linear inches of water space per cow and there should be enough water space for the maximum number of cows in any pen grouping provided in at least two locations within that pen. In order to maintain intake, both water troughs and feed bunks should be routinely cleaned. Clean water troughs weekly. Dump or drain the trough and scrub it with a weak chlorinated solution (1 cup household bleach in 5 gallons of water). After the trough is clean, wash out the disinfectant before refilling the trough. Remove uneaten feed from feed bunks daily. Dairy cows will come to the bunk to eat about 10 times/day, eating larger meals after a trip to the milking parlor. Feed should be available 20-22 hours/day. delivery to the bunk. One final area that should be routinely reviewed on the dairy farm is stocking density in regard to stalls in the barn. When milk prices are low it is tempting to increase stocking density, milk more cows and sell more milk. That may work to a point, but overstocking can hurt individual cow production and health. Stocking density affects feed bunk and water trough management. The recommended stocking density for fresh cows is 80 percent, but apart from this, stocking density should range between 100 percent to 120 percent for all other production classes. Stocking density should not exceed 120 percent because this will result in decreased lying and resting time for cows. The consequences of overstocking are gen-

the ration mixed fresh before each feeding, will promote more trips to the feed bunk, increasing the total amount of dry matter consumed, resulting in higher milk production. In some cases, more frequent feed delivery has resulted in improved fiber digestion and higher milk fat percentage. Regardless if the ration feed is delivered one or two times per day, feed should be pushed up at least twice daily to allow easy access to the feed and prevent excessive reaching or going without feed. According to the University of Kentucky dairy specialists, the most critical time for pushing up feed is two hours after delivering the feed. Ideally, feed should be pushed up every half hour for the first two hours after feed

Dog tags on sale now at various locations Holmes County Auditor Jackie McKee says that a license is a lost dog’s ticket home. The annual dog registration, required by the State of Ohio begins Dec. 1 and runs through the end of January, is a service designed to benefit the animal, its owner and the community. The license tag has an assigned identification number that identifies the owner should the dog become lost or separated from you. Ohio law (955.01 ORC) maintains that all dogs more than three months of age be licensed each year no later than Jan. 31. The fee is $15 per dog. After

the Jan. 31, 2016 deadline, the fee is $30 per dog. You must be 18 or older to apply for a dog license. If you have not licensed your dog in the past, there is no penalty to license your pet for the new year. If you already license your dog, a new license form has been mailed along with a return envelope for your convenience. We offer many options for purchasing 2016 dog licenses. Licenses may be purchased at the Auditor’s Office, 75 East Clinton in Millersburg or at the Holmes County Dog Warden Department, 5387 CR 349, Millersburg. Both of these locations can accept debit/

credit card payments. There are many satellite locations throughout the county that will be also selling 2016 licenses (see attached list). Bring your license form with you when purchasing your new tag. Licenses may also be purchased by mail. Return the entire application with the proper fee and the Auditor’s Office will mail your tag(s) back to you. Licenses may also be purchased online. For additional information visit the dog license website at www.holmescountydoglicense.com. Multi-year dog tags are available in addition to the annual tag option.

Three-year and lifetime dog tags are available for purchase at the Holmes County Auditor’s Office only. A kennel license is available at a fee of $75 for people engaged in the business of breeding dogs for hunting or for sale. A tag must be purchased for each dog in a kennel that is over the age of 3 months. The kennel license will be sold with five tags; additional tags will be $1 per tag. A kennel license can only be purchased at the Auditor’s Office or at the Dog Warden Department. Large volume breeders must purchase a license through the Ohio Depart-

Career Center applies for grant to develop manufacturing programs The Ashland CountyWest Holmes Career Center has applied for a $500,000 Ohio StraightA grant to develop and equip advanced manufacturing training programs at the school. Superintendent Mike McDaniel also told the Career Center Board of Education at its regular meeting Nov. 19 that officials believe the school has a good chance of receiving the Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Technology Education Collaborative grant to provide instructor credentialing and new equipment for its engineering and manufacturing technology programs. RAMTEC is a statewide Advanced Manufacturing STEM/Career Technical Education Consortium, led by Tri-Rivers Career Center, Marion. RAMTEC was funded by the first round of grants from the Ohio StraightA Fund for educational improvement in 2013. Its purpose is to address the skills gap by preparing high school and adult students with advanced manufacturing and engineering skills. The Straight-A RAMTEC grant provided certified curriculum and equipment for robotics, computer numerical control, welding and mainte-

nance technician certifications. McDaniel told the board that Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center tried to join a RAMTEC consortium in 2014 for funding that brought eight other Ohio career centers into a career center consortium but was not successful because it is one of the smaller centers in the state. “This time we said we needed to be included. We have a lot of employers that may not be large, but who have good jobs for our students,” he said. In this year’s attempt at the grant funding, Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center is one of eighteen smaller Ohio career centers that have joined together as a consortium to address the need for advanced manufacturing and engineering skills. If approved, $75,000 of the grant will be split between getting at least two instructors credentialed in RAMTEC programs and for external monitoring of the program impact. The rest will go for program curriculum, design and equipment. McDaniel noted that the Career Center already has purchased robotic, CNC,

Holmes can provide birth certificates The Holmes County Health District is able to issue certified birth certificates to anyone born in Ohio. Hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Cost is $25. PLC, hydraulics, laser engraving and cutting, advanced welding, plasma cutting and other equipment for the engineering and manufacturing programs and identified other equipment needs when it started to develop the manufacturing program last year. Local employers have assisted the career center in addressing space, equipment, curriculum certification and other necessary elements. “We’re about one year ahead in dedicating space, acquiring equipment and starting credentialing than most of the other career centers in this round of applications,” he said. McDaniel did not say when officials will learn if the school will be funded, but warned that there were no guarantees. The Career Center board also heard a report from Melissa Meeker, instructor for the school’s Career Based Intervention program for at-risk students. The program helps high school students with socio-economic and academic problems, low

test scores and other issues. Meeker said students take regular academic core courses and work on job and living skill sets, take on-line credit recovery courses and learn a variety of basic living skills. “Where our program differs is we don’t have a work study program where students spend part of their day in jobs,” she said. “Instead we focus on career exploration and finding what’s right for them.” Students pick four career tech programs they are interested in and spend one period a day in one of the labs so they can choose a program for their junior and senior years. “It gets them thinking about what they want to do,” Meeker said. Meeker reported that students who are credit deficient are dramatically recovering credits through this program and said that almost all of the students successfully transition into regular career center programs for their junior year.

ment of Agriculture and the tags through the Auditor’s Office. Jackie McKee stated “when you consider how much pet owners invest to keep their pets healthy, happy and safe, the license fee is a small price to pay for another year’s peace of mind.” All of license revenues go toward the operation of the Holmes County Kennel. The Holmes County Kennel is open MondayFriday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Dog Agents For 2016 Tag Sales in Holmes County: Holmes County Auditor’s Office, Millersburg; Becks Mills General Store, Becks Mills; Farm-

ODOT invites residents to help plan bicycle routes The Ohio Department of Transportation District 11 and the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association are partnering to provide area residents an opportunity to help plan new bicycle routes for District 11’s region which includes: Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Harrison, Holmes, Jefferson and Tuscarawas counties. The agencies are hosting two identical public outreach meetings to solicit input and provide information about the state’s effort to establish a signed Ohio bicycle network that will accommodate long distance bicycling. Once complete, Ohio will have over 3,000 miles of state and U.S. designated bicycle routes. Community representatives and residents are

encouraged to attend one of the public meetings being held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at ODOT District 11 headquarters, 2201 Reiser Ave. SE, New Philadelphia. ODOT has developed draft maps based on factors like low traffic volumes, wide shoulders, low speed limits, good pavement, direct links between urbanized areas, local support and incorporation of existing bicycle facilities. ODOT and OMEGA will explain the process to the local representatives, present the draft bicycle routes, and ask for input on these proposed routes. ODOT expects to begin working with affected local jurisdictions in January 2016 and complete the route designation process in April 2016.

The Holmes County Hub Shopper

The ‘I hate shopping’ syndrome put aside for season I am, quite possibly, the world’s worst shopper. I know what you’re thinking, “But you’re a woman! Women love shopping! They live for it! Sometimes my wife/ mother/sister/aunt will go to the mall and be there for hours and come home with nothing!” Not me. I would rather give myself 4,000 paper cuts with store receipts. Most of the year, this lack-of-shopping-desire is easy to live with. I have learned there is a distinct difference between shopping and buying. I do not shop, I buy. If our socks

Karrie McAllister Dirt Don’t Hurt

start having too many holes, I don’t waltz carelessly though the stores, perusing the various styles and prices. I make a beeline for the sock department, find the one that’s on sale, and leave. But during the Christmas season, this shopping thing is nearly inevitable and it looms over my head like a dark cloud.

While some people delight in the opportunity to find good sales and embrace the commercial aspect of the holiday, I start breaking into a sweat in early December. For each person on my list have to go through a bit of a checklist: 1. What does this person enjoy? 2. Does this person need something? 3. If this person needed it, why wouldn’t they buy it themselves and get the color they want? 4. What IS this person’s favorite color? 5. Can I buy this online

while shopping in my pajamas? 6. How can anyone really charge for shipping these days?!? 7. Is it worth avoiding parking lots and check out lines that bring out that nervous twitch in my right eye? 8. Add to cart. I must say, the invention of online shopping has made the shopping half of gift giving easier, but the cumbersome act of returning more than makes up for it. The printing, the packaging, the mailing. Not that standing in the return line

in a store on Dec. 26 is all that much better, or that I would know because I would rather spend all day wearing holey socks than doing that. And yet, despite all of the hassle and trouble and the unnecessary worry I put myself through, I do it anyway. I always do. Because I so very much enjoy giving gifts to people I care about. It’s almost like I have a second syndrome, love-to-give. During this season, despite my grinchy shopping personality, this love-to-give thing takes

over and suddenly I find myself wanting to give presents to everyone I know. Because as much as it is a pain to shop, it’s worth it to give something to someone you care about, or even if you just want to show them thanks for that little bit they do to make your world a better place. And so I shop, often begrudgingly, because of love. (But not a love of shopping.) Stop by and say hi at www.KarrieMcAllister.com.

Joining Mandel in announcing this partnership is Village of Millersburg Clerk-Treasurer Karen Shaffer. With this launch, taxpayers in Millersburg are now able to view over 11,000 transactions that equal to more

than $5.6 million of total spending over the past two fiscal years. The Village of Millersburg is the first local government in Holmes County to partner with the Treasurer’s office to post their spending online on OhioCheckbook.com.

“I believe the people of Millersburg have a right to know how their tax money is being spent and I applaud local leaders here for partnering with the Treasurer’s office to post their finances on OhioCheckbook.com,” Mandel said. “By partnering and posting local government checkbooks, taxpayers across Ohio are empowered with a powerful tool to hold public officials accountable within their communities.” “The Village of Millersburg is excited to be one of the first local governments to partner with the State Treasurer’s Office to make our spending accessible to residents online,”

said Village of Millersburg Clerk-Treasurer Karen Shaffer. “This transparency initiative provides a tool of accountability for our taxpayers.” On April 7, Mandel sent a letter to 18,062 local government and school officials representing 3,962 local governments throughout the state calling on them to place their checkbook level data on OhioCheckbook. com and extending an invitation to partner with his office at no cost to local governments. These local governments include cities, counties, townships, schools, library districts and other special districts.

Holmes County resident Rusty Baker, a professional artist who paints murals both locally and internationally, attended the show for the first time. “I left with a smile on my face,” he said. Vince and Jan Bowden were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the acts. “Kevin really engaged the crowd. We will definitely be back for the next one,” she said. The next stand up event is slated for Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Hotel Millersburg. Headliners will be King, Buckland, John Lorson, Mike Kline and Scott Martin.

Scott Martin entertains the crowd at Stand Up Comedy Night at Millersburg Hotel. Anyone is welcome to perform a 5-minute comedy routine and will have free admittance. Sign up the night of the show. A suggested donation of $10 goes to support the bookmobile. The week was all about Thanksgiving prep I’m writing this on the Monday of Thanksgiving week. My kitchen counters are cluttered with ingredients to make my traditional dishes for the Big Day that will be taken over to daughter Robyn’s house. There also is a final grocery list that will help me buy the last few needed items, if I can find them in the store. So far, the bag of frozen diced onions, needed for the mashed potato stuffing, has eluded me at the big box store. Next I will try our nearby Publix, where shopping is a pleasure. (That’s their motto, not mine. Well, actually the shopping part is fine,

have her original recipe and think it may have included some sugar with the berries. I’ve made it the lazy way with a can of whole cranberry sauce for so long that it escapes my memory. it’s the paying part that is I do recall that if you less fun.) If worse comes didn’t freeze the berries to worse, I will dice up first there was a real mess my own onions. If you with red juice squirting refrigerate them first all over the kitchen. One there is less crying in the of the last years I made process. it this way I resorted to Now that I have an going to the basement actual old-fashioned meat to save the mess in the grinder, I’m tempted to kitchen. make my cranberry salad Here is the recipe for the way my mother used Cranberry Salad. Even to do it. She ground up though it will be too late the whole fresh berries for you to make it this to put in her Jell-O mixThanksgiving, it is good ture. Sadly, I no longer any time of the year.

In a medium sized bowl, make 2 small boxes of cherry or raspberry Jell-O, or one large box, according to the directions. While it is setting up a bit, drain one 15-ounce can of crushed pineapple very well and set aside in a small bowl. You need two oranges for this recipe, one with and one without the peel. If you have a food processor this is where it comes in handy. Put orange section chunks into the processor and chop them up. Mix in with the pineapple. Next, stir in until well blended, 1 can of either whole or smooth cranberry sauce. You also need at

least 1 cup chopped walnuts, depending on how much you like them. If you want to use the food processor to chop these I would suggest doing it before you do the oranges and don’t over do the chopping. Otherwise you can do it by hand with a sharp knife on a cutting board. By now the gelatin should be starting to set up. Now pour in all your other ingredients and stir well. Refrigerate for several hours, or as I do it, for a couple days. One year I had a failure when, apparently, there was too much pineapple juice and the salad did not get firm. It still tasted

fine but was pretty runny. Tomorrow I will make pie crusts for the pecan and mince pies. The pecan is for daughter Robyn. To do it, mix together in a small bowl: 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup light Karo and 1/4 cup melted butter. Add 3 well beaten eggs and pour into a 9-inch crust. Top this with lots of pecans to cover the filling. (The recipe says 1 cup, but that is not nearly enough in my opinion.) Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, then reduce oven to 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. This should fill anyone’s sweet tooth with a very small slice.

Humrichouser told his attorney he “wanted to make a bequest to the library located in the former Holmesville schoolhouse, i.e. the Prairie Township Library. “(Humrichouser) explained that, as a child, (his) mother received her education at the schoolhouse and he wanted to help the Prairie Township Library currently operated therein. At the time, (Humrichouser) wrongly assumed the Prairie Township Library was operated as a branch of the district library, so the bequest was written as such and incorporated in the trust.” The complaint asks Juvenile/Probate Judge Thomas Lee to declare the Prairie Township Friends of the Library the true beneficiary. It’s a matter Bob Reynolds, legal counsel for the Prairie Township Friends

of the Library, believes is pretty clear cut. “I think it’s consistent with what the trustee feels, and I think the complaint sets out what (Humrichouser’s) intent was. I think the intent was pretty clear,” Reynolds said, noting the potential is huge for the small library. “It’s a shoestring operation that relies on volunteers and donations to cover operating costs. This would be a significant impact,” said Reynolds, noting he’s unaware of what the true monetary value of the gift would be. In addition to the library, also at issue in the trust is the gift intended for the fire department. Subsequent to Humrichouser’s death, it was learned the Prairie Township trustees own the building and equipment and contract with the department. Both the fire

department and the trustees assert they may be the appropriate beneficiary. However, in comparison to the library matter, Humrichouser’s intent with respect to the fire department is less obvious, and the complaint asks the court to designate an appropriate recipient. Holmes County Prosecutor Steve Knowling serves as legal counsel for both the library and the Prairie Township trustees. While he said he could not comment specifically on discussions with his clients, he said it’s the first time in 30 years he’s seen such an issue, regarding disbursement of funds to public entities, come before the court for clarification. “This is really not a typical lawsuit,” he said. “It’s an unfortunate situation brought about by imprecise language that is vague and confusing. (Humri-

chouser) is dead now and the decision must be made as to his intended beneficiary. “The money will eventually get to whom it was intended to go to. By law, it’s the court’s function to sort that out,” said Knowling, noting it’s also possible for the matter to be settled out of court. “We want to get this resolved quickly with the least amount of legal jousting as possible,” he said, noting the longer the matter goes on, the more the pot will shrink, with legal fees being paid out of the trust. Attorney John M. Carey, who represents Wiley and wrote the complaint, said he could not comment on the pending matter. Commissioners hear about courthouse lighting By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer MILLERSBURG — A representative of the Lions Club and Holmes County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Rinfret spoke with the commissioners about a project to light up the courthouse, making it a tourist destination. “The pictures don’t do it any justice. Until you’re there in real life, it’s enough to make the hairs on your arms stand up,” Frank Arnold said. Arnold spearheaded the Lions Club’s project that has lighted the tower of the courthouse. Now, he’d like to see the entire building lit up. “There are two courthous-

es in Ohio that I’m aware of that do this,” Rinfret said at Monday’s commissioners’ meeting. “Cambridge has a light show that rotates with the season. And Licking County is another.” The company that does this is ABC Communications and the project manager is Joel Losego. “I’ve talked with him on the phone, along with Natalie down at the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce office,” Arnold said. “It has increased the revenues there by 40 percent. They did not get one negative comment on this idea. They get 100 buses a year that stop to see the lights.” “They stop on their way to Ogleby Park,” Commis-

sioner Joe Miller said. “I just read an article in Ohio Magazine about this.” “Here’s the thing,” Arnold continued. “You hold those people captive for a day. The hotels are going to fill up. When they get done visiting the antique shops here in town, they’ll drift toward Berlin. They’re going to want to see other things. This isn’t just about Millersburg. It’s about the county. When you’ve got a light display of this magnitude, and the theme changes every year. It changes for Veterans Day, the Fourth of July, Easter, what a great way to celebrate.” Arnold said that on a Thursday night in early November there were more than 100 people

standing in the courtyard in Cambridge. “Is our courtyard big enough?” Miller asked. Arnold assured him it is every bit the size of Cambridge’s. “The cost he gave us is for 34 windows. The cost depends on the number of lighting stations you require,” Arnold said. “You can start at one price and build the thing up over time. We would just need to do the sides you see from the northwest and northeast. “There’s about 30,000 lights, 34 windows, speakers and stations, and the cost would vary depending on the number of stations wanted,”Arnold continued. “The estimated

The Lions Club has talked about it and we’re in agreement. We could be a stepping stone to help fund the project.” “Just think about the summer,” Rinfret said. “Guys and women on their bikes, come into town, and they go, ‘Hey, did you hear about the light show?’ They’ll stay, as opposed to riding their bikes, turning around and going home.” “I think it’s something to

McCarron does what her sister did last year Mansfield woman takes first in women’s division of Amish Country Half-marathon By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer MILLERSBURG — The women’s winner of the Amish Country Halfmarathon was keeping it in the family, while the men’s winner used the race as a proving ground to help him prepare for bigger races down the road. Grace McCarron of Mansfield followed in her sister’s footsteps Saturday, winning the halfmarathon in a time of 1:29.33. Her younger sister Emma won last year’s race but she was unable to run this year because she is expecting a baby. “It’s a tough course,” McCarron said. “Oh my gosh, I didn’t remember that last hill being so tough. I was so mad. Your legs are already tired, and you add that hill. It’s hard. Me and my sister are used to running like 1:20, 1:21, and you come here and run a 1:30 you’re like, ‘Thank God I finished.’ It’s nice to be challenged. “I like this race because it’s different from what we’re used to,” McCarron added. “It’s very challenging. I think I’ll be really sore tomorrow, but it feels really good right now. It’s a weird kind of feeling.” Men’s winner Ryan Kienzle cruised to victory in 1:15:07, a pace of 5:44 per mile. Kienzle and his training partner, Nick Fresenko, who finished second in 1:15:29, used this race as a trainer for the upcoming USA half-marathon championship in Columbus in 2016. Both runners were formerly cross country runners at Malone University. “We stayed together through the first 11 miles and that last hill,” Fresenko said. “He kind of got me there. It was rough on me. I really slowed down on that one, but got back on pace after that.” Former race winner and West Holmes cross country coach Kevin Beachy, finished third this year. He said he improved his times the next two years after winning the inaugural Amish Country Halfmarathon, but dropped a place each year. “This was slow compared to what I ran last year,” Beachy said. “I

The start of the Amish Country Half-marathon was as colorful as it was competitive, with more than 250 runners taking on the challeging 13-mile course in Holmes County on Saturday. The race began and ended at Hiland High School.

Grace McCarron of Mansfield won the women’s top prize in Nov. 28 Amish Country Half-marathon that started and ended on the track at Hiland High School.

Joyce Fogel of Coshocton and her coon hound Trixie finished the 5-K race on Saturday as part of the Amish Country Half-marathon event. Fogel, also known as the Crazy Dog Lady, said Trixie has run several races with her, and she loves it.

I was just kind of hanging on to run this one at the end. It’s nice to have a local race. They do a great job with it. The course is tough, but there’s a lot of flat stretches in there. It’s not a bad course to run. It was actually warm this year compared to what it’s been in the past. I’ll take a little bit of rain and a

littler warmer than cold and windy any day. There were 268 competitors in the half-marathon (156 men and 112 women), with medals being awarded to the top runner in each of 14 different age categories (14-under , 15-19, 20-24, 25-20, 30-34, on up to 75 and over). Diane Kellenburger (68) was the oldest woman winner in 2:57:16,

while Richard Albaugh (78) was the eldest male winner, finishing in 2:34:05. Race promoter and coordinator Mark Fowler was pleased with the turnout. “I was shocked. When I looked at that marathon crowd at the start, it was much bigger than I anticipated,” Fowler said. “We were about 75 to 100 off last year’s numbers clear

up to Wednesday, Thursday, but between yesterday and today’s signups, I think we may have caught last year’s numbers. Just looking at the number of people that ran through here for the half marathon, there were a lot of people for that. “This was pretty good running weather,” Fowler added. “This rain didn’t seem to bother them. And there wasn’t much

of a wind to deal with. Our first year, we were 20 degrees with a 12-miles per hour wind. That was brutal. So, this was a whole lot better.” The day also featured a 5-K race that saw Garaway High School’s state qualifying harrier BJ Schwartz (16) win the men’s race in 20:21, and Bekah Zinkon (22) of Dover won the girls race in 25:11.

Quality lineup has Woods excited about wrestling season By AARON DORKSEN Sports Editor The 2015-16 West Holmes wrestling team is hoping to show quality is more important than quantity. Seventeen wrestlers is not a lot compared to many other Div. II teams, but 25th-year head coach Jeff Woods likes the dedication and experience of his team. Two-time state placer senior Cole Woods (eighth in 2015, second in ’14) was 43-7 at 126 pounds and is a three-time state qualifier, while sophomore Ashton Eyler (41-10 at 138) is also a returning state qualifier. “This could be a very solid team with a good group of upperclassmen for leaders,” said coach Woods, whose team was the Ohio Cardinal Conference runner-up last year. “They all gained valuable experience last year.” Also bringing back key experience are returning district qualifiers in sophomore Thane Kaufman (24-15 at 106) and senior Damon Harris (30-16 at 285). Four more grapplers were one win away from

district berths last season: seniors Josiah Allison (2016 at 132) and Michael Kashuba (24-16 at 170) and juniors Cody Woods (27-9 at 113) and Jake Mullet (19-19 at 182). Also back as returning letterwinners are senior Ricky Dutter, along with sophomores Skylar Cline and Colton Bowling. Newcomers are senior Isaac Hoxworth, junior Alex Walker, sophomore Harley Batdorf and freshman Josh Baldridge, Tre Anderson and Noah Hendrix. Coach Woods has quite a mix in his wrestling room, from some of the state’s best in Cole Woods and Ashton Eyler, to some grapplers who took a season off but have returned. “The numbers are low, but what we do have are quality kids,” Coach Woods said. As usual, the Knights will challenge themselves with one of the area’s toughest tournament schedules. They’ll warm up at the Wayne Invitational Tournament at Smithville Dec. 11-12 and really step into a gauntlet at the Alliance Top Gun (Jan. 15-16). Their West Holmes/Marine Corps

Invitational will be a good showcase in their own gym on Jan. 23. The OCC Meet will be held at Ashland on Feb. 6.

West Holmes’ top OCC rival has been Lexington, which will look a lot different after coach Brent Rastetter left to take over

the Otterbein College program. The Minutemen have won eight straight OCC titles.

“The OCC is always a tough league and we expect to finish at or near the top,” Coach Woods said.

Lexington rallies late to stun Hiland boys in overtime By RANDY WORRELL Sports Writer BERLIN — In Friday’s season opener, Hiland’s boys basketball team turned a 30-28 halftime deficit into a 62-52 lead with 3:44 remaining in regulation, prompting coach Mark Schlabach to comment afterward that the stretch was “the best 12 minutes of basketball we had played all preseason.” In a “Lexington Minute,” however, it all came to a grinding halt for the Hawks. Lexington’s 25-7 run in the closing minutes of regulation and in overtime led the Minutemen to a 77-69 victory over the Hawks in Hiland’s Perry Reese Jr. Community Center. Lexington’s Joey Zahn scored a game-high 29 points and Jonah Yaussey added 25 in the Minutemen’s second straight victory over the Hawks. Lexington defeated Hiland in last year’s opener 55-50 in Lexington. “I have the highest regard and respect for Hiland’s program, and to come over here and get out of here with a victory is absolutely great for our team,” Lexington coach Scott Hamilton said. “When we were

down 10 there late in the game, I thought, like everyone else, that we were in trouble. “But, we started doing the things that we were successful at early, like throwing the ball (inside to Yaussey), then we forced (Hiland) into a few mistakes, and our kids never quit. It’s a huge win for us.” After trailing for most of the first half, Hiland took its first lead of the game early in the third quarter at 31-30 on a Brady Schlabach 3-pointer with 6:43 left. The Hawks extended their lead to 46-41 at the end of three, then pushed the margin to double digits at 53-43 on a Michael Miller breakaway dunk with 6:31 remaining in regulation. Miller sank a pair of free throws to once again stretch Hiland’s lead to 10 (62-52), before Lex started whittling away at the Hawks’ lead. Yaussey scored seven of the next 10 Minutemen points to bring his team to within two at 64-62, before a Schlabach layup gave the Hawks a 66-62 with 58 ticks left. Following a pair of missed free throws and two turnovers later, though, a Zahn layup after a feed from Yaussey tied the game

at 66-66, the game’s first since 3:32 left in the third (39-39). “Those two guys (Zahn and Yaussey) have played together since the sixth grade,” Hamilton said. “When we started chipping away at their lead, we started throwing the ball inside to Yaussey, which opened up some other things for us when they doubled down or helped. The play we ran to get Zahn the bucket to tie the game wasn’t anything new, just another option of what we do. “We run basic offense, but our guys do a great job executing it.” Hiland had one final chance to win it in regulation. Following a Schlabach timeout, Turner Horn received the inbounds pass and dribbled the length of the court, but the 6-2 junior’s 3-pointer bounced off the back of the iron to force the extra period. Horn led the Hawks with a team-high 24 points on the night, canning 8 of 14 shots and 4 of 5 beyond the arc. “I thought when we got that 10-point lead late, we just relaxed a little bit defensively, and against a team (like Lexington), you just can’t afford See Pg. 30 — HILAND

We didn’t talk when Zahn scored that tying basket ... we just didn’t make the plays to finish them off when we had the chance.” In overtime, Lex scored the first point on a Joey Vore free throw and never looked back. Holmes Center for the Arts presents preview for chamber Performance is Dec. 12 at West Holmes High School By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer MILLERSBURG — Holmes County Center for the Arts Executive Director Holley Johnson used the best props she has to give a presentation to the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday afternoon at Keim Lumber’s Carpenter’s Restaurant. Johnson presented nine of her dance students, along with one of musical director Jaime White’s vocal students, and the artists wowed the chamber members with their ballet dancing skills and Hiland freshman Kayli Keim demonstrated her powerful and angelic voice as she sang Gesu Bambino and another Christmas carol. The presentation was a preview of the scheduled performance on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. at the West Holmes High School Auditorium. “This will be our first major performance since we became incorporated last March,” Johnson said. “Our show is called ’A Christmas Celebration’ and will showcase the students of our music and dance programs.” Tickets are $6 apiece and can be reserved by calling 330-473-2879. Holmes Center for the Arts is

a non profit organization. Bob Boss, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, said he was quite impressed with the array of talent on display. “I was not even aware that there is an Arts Center in the county,” Boss said. “I was very impressed with the talent, the organization and the dedication of the participants involved. I was also impressed with the leadership of the organization.” Leaders of the Holmes Center for the Arts hope more and more people find out about their organization. “Many successful small towns have a vibrant, energetic, thriving arts community,” Johnson said. “That’s what we are planning to make Holmes County with the Holmes Center for the Arts. By being a not-for-profit organization, we can apply for public funding, and also offer our supporters a tax deduction. “The mission of the Holmes Center for the Arts is to provide quality, educational and performing experiences to individuals of all social and economic backgrounds, and to do that in a nurturing and family oriented environment,” she continued. “We have been able to meet most of our goals this year.” The HCFTA hosted a free arts camp this summer for about 80 children, featuring 10 professional musicians, artists and teachers. “The kids probably didn’t understand the

The students gave a preview of their Christmas show to be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at West Holmes High School. caliber of education they were getting,” Johnson said. “It was a truly unique experience for them.” She said about 75 dance students come to the Washington Street Abbey for dance classes each week, while music and art classes, as well as ballroom dancing and other programs are going on. “We have 16 couples, that’s 32 people who have been coming to ball room classes for the past 14 weeks,” Johnson said. “We even held a ball in October.”

A new semester starts in January, with an adult choir forming, as well as a theater program, visual arts, drawing for adults, and a crochet class. “There is a broad range of classes you can take in art,” she added.
