Clubs Moreland Garden Club The Moreland Garden Club held its Garden Therapy program in December with 25 residents at the Wayne County Care Center. A Christmas theme was used as residents made wood angel ornaments to hang on the tree in the center’s dining room. Residents painted the angels’ wings gold and the dresses white. Sphagnum moss was used for the hair and gold glitter pipe cleaners for the halos. Faces were painted on before by member Michelle Smith. A gold star, red baby’s breath and a small fern leaf were glued onto the front of the dress. Following the craft, each resident received a gift of socks, Kleenex, hand lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, candy, a card and a new 2016 calendar. Christmas cookies and punch were served for refreshments. Assisting with the evening’s program were Marianne Swanson, Nancy Marthey, Julie Grossniklaus, Kim Ramsier and Paula and Valerie Huffman.

We are looking forward to plunging into the New Year. 2015 was eventful in that we became greatgrandparents for the first time and granddaughter Rachel completed her four years in the United States Navy. This will give her a better income than her previous job at Chick-fil-a. After all, she has a car to support. Grandson Nathan finished his senior year of high school in December and is now going to work while he’s waiting to walk through graduation in June 2016. This leaves only Gabriel to drive off to Berkeley High School for two and a-half more years. Speaking of Gabe, he made the cleverest Christmas gifts for some of his family members. He probably has more disposable cash than any of his siblings, what with his two jobs. Yet, he chose to make items out of wood at home. He made tea candle holders for his mother and two plaques with Chinese characters done in wood burning for his father. One took him three hours to complete because he had copied off
small photos of the family and glued it all around the plaque. At the moment, granddaughter Liz from Ohio is down here visiting. She got a ride with some neighbors as far as Asheville, North Carolina, where she rented a car and drove the last four hours. She will fly back home at a date yet to be determined. She is having a marvelous time hanging out with her cousins. Our big entertainment for the day was to go to the 10 a.m. showing of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” We have trouble following the plots of these kinds of shows but fun anyhow. It was quite entertaining and action packed and nice to see Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprise their roles from when they were much younger.

Pomerene recognized for overall excellence By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer Pomerene Hospital has added another feather to its cap. It has been recognized by iVantage Health Analytics and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) for overall excellence in Quality, Outcomes and Financial Strength, reflecting top quartile performance among all acute care hospitals in the nation. A total of 1,238 hospitals were recognized nationwide. Pomerene was one of 39 hospitals recognized in Ohio. The NOSORH recognized all rural hospitals performing in the top 25 percent of various performance categories. “I am always happy to talk about Pomerene, especially when somebody has been good enough to recognize us, Pomerene Hospital CEO Tony Snyder said. “I always like these awards especially, because we didn’t really do anything to draw recognition to ourselves. This was all based on publicly available data. They comb through this data, and a lot of it comes from Medicare and Medicaid, and what they generate.
“They accumulate all this data and have their own way of scoring,â€? he continued. “When you are recognized for doing the right thing, doing what it is we’re supposed to be doing in the first place, it’s nice to be recognized by someone from the outside.â€? Snyder says the hospital has been recognized for its triple aim of patient satisfaction, quality outcome and financial efficiency. “What is the value we’re providing for our patients in our community,â€? Snyder said. “Are we improving the health of people who come to Pomerene, and on each of these things we did very well. “Our staff has always been committed to providing high quality care, resulting in positive outcomes,â€? Snyder continued. “This recognition confirms our dedication to providing high quality patient care, and healthcare services to the greater Holmes County area. The recognition for financial responsibility is especially important to us as we provide our services in a cost effective manner.â€? The rankings have been designated by the Hospital Strength INDEX™, the industry’s most comprehensive and objective
assessment of hospital performance. In partnership with NOSORH, iVantage Health Analytics has developed a datadriven program designed to identify excellence across a broad spectrum of indicators relevant to hospital performance and patient care. The Hospital Strength INDEX™ captures performance metrics for more than 4,000 acute care hospitals, including over 1,300 Rural and Critical Access Hospitals. “These top quartile performers should take great pride in this recognition,â€? said Michael Topchik, senior vice president of iVantage Health Analytics. “It showcases their commitment to continuous performance analysis and improvement. It’s an honor to celebrate their achievement as they continue to serve their communities despite the many market, regulatory and financial pressures they face.â€? NOSORH was established in 1995 to assist State Offices of Rural Health in their efforts to improve access to, and the quality of, health care for America’s 61 million rural citizens. iVantage is a leading business analytic and advisory services company that focuses on
rural health advocacy. The company combines public and private data with proprietary analytics and modeling to drive clinical and financial performance improvement, strategic planning, market assessment and contract optimization, as well as informs healthcare industry policy, research and thought leadership. “The first I heard about iVantage was back in 2011, and based on their data from back then, we didn’t do so well, Snyder said. “Looking at this data from five years, we have made tremendous progress in all of those areas, and in providing value for our community. It is very rewarding to get

Change has been brewing for decades now Before revealing the truth to my friends about my new career I dropped little hints. “I’m going to a happier place very nearby,” I’d say. “It involves clean water and focuses on one of the oldest professions in the world.” The vote was unanimous: I was going to work at the Millersburg Brewing Company next door. I’ll admit the intentional misdirection. It is a shared dream among my group of friends to have a buddy with unlimited access to craft-brewed beer, so I figured I’d let them have their fun before I dropped the bomb that I was leaving academia to go back to the sort of thing that I’d decided upon while still a kid in high school. (While “brew master” may have proven to be an interesting and rewarding re-career it would have likely been a short-lived one for

John Greenleaf Wittier — this might sound like an odd reading list for an Ecology class, but in reality, all of these writers are tied closely together by a shared and deep reverence for the land. Finally, after a three-

Journaling: Those many stories you won’t see I give credit to my first grade teacher for instilling a love of journaling. It was a Steno notebook, which I still have and take out when I want to prove to my kids I had a legitimate dream of joining the circus as a clown. Since then, a little
notebook next to my bed at night has been a constant companion for most of my life. It brought me through all of the ridiculous drama of my early teen years and the miserable years that most people know as “high school.”

You should write a column in the newspaper.” Part of me questioned if I wanted to share my life with so many, but the other half of me knew that logging my life with weekly deadlines might be the only way to actually do it. And that’s how it all started, over 10 years ago. Since then I’ve let those unfinished journals collect dust instead of my memories, which

Farming Register now for 2016 Outlook and Policy meeting What’s ahead for farmers and agriculture businesses in 2016? Currently there are a lot of predictions regarding various agricultural enterprises and agricultural income projections for 2016 and very few paint a rosy picture. Plan to attend the 2016 Agriculture Outlook and Policy meeting Jan. 22 at Fisher Auditorium on the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development campus in Wooster. Topics will be presented by OSU Extension specialists and educators who have expertise in agricultural production and economic topics that will impact the

Winter weather and nutritional requirements Although weather has been mild through December, at some point true winter weather is going to get
here. Winter weather has an impact on livestock nutritional requirements, especially livestock that winter outside. In a recent OSU Extension beef cattle newsletter, John Grimes, OSU Extension beef production specialist addressed some winter weather conditions that livestock producers need to be aware of. Most cow-calf producers understand winter weather can pose challenges for them to meet the nutritional needs of the cow herd. Changes in temperatures and moisture (rain, sleet, snow, ice, etc.) can significantly impact the daily nutritional needs of the beef cow. The stage of gestation or lactation of the cow certainly impacts her daily needs regardless of
the season. In a recent issue of Oklahoma State University’s Cow-Calf Newsletter, Dr. Glenn Selk points out that researchers have used the rule of thumb that cows’ energy requirements increase 1 percent for each degree the wind chill is below the 32 degrees F. lower critical temperature. For example, assume we have a wind chill of 10 degrees F. The cow’s energy requirement would then increase by 22 percent. If a cow typically eats 20 pounds of high quality grass-legume mixed hay per day, she would then require 24.4 pounds per day. Selk also stated research has indicated energy See Pg. 13 — REGISTER

Farming City girl cultivates love for a farmer The New Year has begun and everyone is trying to get settled back into a normal routine. It has turned colder after the summer-like weather in December. Dandelions were blooming in the yard on Christmas Day. Catalogs for garden seeds will soon be arriving in the mail. Farmers’ thoughts have already turned to spring planting. Seed and fertilizer salesmen are knocking on farmhouse doors and farmers are comparing prices. The local restaurants keep the coffee cups filled as farmers get together to ponder over what the grain, livestock and milk prices will be this year. No one knows what the future holds, but spring is on the way, and farmers are hoping for a good year. Recently, when going through a box of items that my Mother had saved, I came across a Dear Abby column written by Abigail Van Buren. The following is a letter she received in
1984 and the answer. Dear Abby: I’m a city girl who’s attending college in Ames, Iowa. I’ve fallen in love with a young man whose father was a farmer and he intends to follow in his footsteps. What are my chances for happiness as a farmer’s wife? Have you any statistics on this? —In Love with Wally Dear In Love: I have no statistics, but love being what it is, statistics wouldn’t help much. A reader sent a charming piece that may not be your bale of hay, but if it is, good luck to you and Wally: “I wanted a guy who could sit and have a cup of coffee with me at 5 a.m. when the only sounds to be heard are crickets, cows, and creaking floorboards — that’s why I married a farmer.”
“I wanted a guy who would crack a joke and make me laugh when I’m covered with dirt and cow manure — that’s why I married a farmer.” “I wanted a guy who could get out of a nice warm bed when it’s 30 below and plow out the driveway so the school bus can get through — that’s why I married a farmer.” “I wanted a guy who could entertain four kids, a dog, and a nerve wracked wife when the power goes off, the pipes freeze and everything quits during a two-day blizzard — that’s why I married a farmer.” “I wanted a guy who could put up with in-laws, outlaws, and new tax laws, and still be open-minded, and openly loving — that’s why I married a farmer.” “I wanted a guy who could count his blessings when he’s depressed, count his children when he feels poor, and count on God to make it all work out — that’s why I married a farmer.”
This kind of energy change is not possible by simply feeding more of the same type of feedstuffs. If you have higher quality hay, feed more of that. Also consider supplementing with grain for more energy but make changes gradually to avoid digestive issues. It would be wise to make smaller changes in the diet at the time of weather-related stress and continue any increases when the weather stabilizes to compensate for any energy deficiencies the cow may have experienced. Hopefully you have a good handle on the quality and quantity of the forage you have stored for the winter feeding period. If you have not performed a laboratory analysis on the
different types of hay you will be feeding, it is not too late to get this done. If you do not obtain a forage analysis, target your perceived higher quality hay to groups with the highest nutritional demands. First-calf heifers in their last trimester and calving are at the highest risk for nutritional deficiencies and should receive the highest quality feeds. Third trimester and calving mature cows should be prioritized next for better feedstuffs. Bred, dry mature cows in mid-gestation and in adequate body condition are candidates for lower quality feedstuffs. Register (From Page 12) requirement for maintenance of beef cows with a wet hair coat is much greater. Cows exposed to falling precipitation and that have wet hair coats are considered to have reached the lower critical temperature at 59 degrees F. In addition, the requirements change twice as much for each degree change in wind-chill factor. In other words, the energy requirement actually increases 2 percent for each degree below 59 degrees F. Using the same wind chill of 10 degrees F. as in the previous example, the cow’s energy requirement would then increase by 98 percent.

Dan Armitage is a popular freelance outdoor and travel writer, speaker and radio show host based in Ohio and hosts his popular “Kids Fishing 411” seminar daily at the Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show. Witzky says there will be fishing seminars every hour as well. “The hog trough will be filled for fishing demonstrations,” he said. “We’ve added a lot more fishing products this year than what we’ve had in the past, like tackle, fishing poles, that kind of stuff. We’ll have seven or eight new fishing product lines this year.” He says some guys like to see as many seminars as possible, but can’t get it all done in one day. That’s why he recommends the two-day or three-day pass for admission. He noted some businesses drop out each year, but there will be 60 new businesses at the Sportsman
Show this year. “We have outfitters from all over the United States and Canada,” Witzky said. “People come here and they can book a hunt or to go fishing at a lodge somewhere, or a charter captain out on Lake Erie or Lake Ontario up in New York. “If you’re into elk hunting or bear hunting or moose hunting, we have those preserves as well,” he added. “There’s also duck hunting, geese hunting, pheasant hunting. We basically have something for any outdoorsman. That’s how we’ve become the second largest show in the state in five short years.” The deer and turkey expo put on in Columbus is the only outdoorsman show that is larger in the state. Witzky says a brand new hunting company out of Idaho will be releasing its new product at the Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show this year. “They’re going to be at about 30 shows across the country but ours will be the first one they hit,” he said. West Holmes’ Hannah Clark has pressure put on her by River View’s Danielle Muhleman this past Monday in the Dungeon.
Lady Knights get defensive, rout River View By RANDY WORRELL Sports Writer MILLERSBURG — Going into Monday night’s game at West Holmes, River View’s girls basketball team had been riding a hot streak. After dropping their first three contests of the season, the Black Bears were victorious in five of their last six outings, surpassing last year’s win total of four in the process. The Knights, though, nearly put the Bears into hibernation in their 59-17 non-league win at the Dungeon. time after its season-opening loss to North Canton Hoover. Mackenzie Huff scored seven points and hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds for River View, which fell to 5-5 on the season. While Monday’s affair was a struggle offensively for West Holmes — at least through the early going — the Knights got it done against the Bears with their go-to defense. West Holmes forced River View into 32 turnovers, turning 21 of those into points, while committing just a pair of miscues themselves on the night, its first coming early in the fourth period. “It seemed like there was a lid on the bucket for most of the night, but
there’s going to be nights when that happens,” West Holmes coach Lisa Patterson said. “When you play good defense, though, it’s easier to overcome, and I thought our defensive intensity was there most of the game. “We pride ourselves on (playing well defensively), and we’re confident it will be there even on nights when we struggle to score.” West Holmes led 8-2 after one quarter, as the two teams combined to make just 4 of 23 shots while the Knights forced the Bears into nine opening-quarter turnovers. The Knights got untracked in the second, however, canning 9 of 16 attempts in racing to a
27-6 lead at the half. Natalie Molnar scored all eight of her points in the period. “We know Brittleigh and Hannah are going to be there for us most every night scoring, but going down the stretch this season we’re going to need a third scorer and tonight Natalie stepped into that role,” Patterson said. “At times, it’s difficult to get her to shoot the basketball because she’s such a great defender and really thrives in that role. It doesn’t have to be the same girl who complements us scoring every night, just as long as its someone doing that, and we’ve been fortunate to have different girls do that for us almost every night.”
The Knights turned up the heat in the third quarter, draining 11 of 15 shots, while capitalizing on 10 more RV turnovers. Macaulay scored 12 points in the third stanza as West Holmes outscored the Bears 24-7. “We challenged our girls at halftime,” Patterson said. “Too many times you see teams lose focus after leading big at the half, and we set a goal defensively for the second half and responded by playing better at both ends. “But the one thing that was really good to see was that we didn’t turn the ball over the entire game until early in the fourth quarter, which is rare for any team. Our girls that
are less-experienced as far as playing time goes, are gaining valuable experience in games like this tonight and they did a great job of taking care of the ball.” West Holmes finished the night 27 of 69 from the floor (39 percent), while River View converted seven of its 28 attempts. Neither team connected on a 3-pointer on the night. West Holmes won the rebounding battle 34-27, with Clark snaring a teamhigh eight and Kacie Leppla pulling in seven.

Novotny takes over as DOW’s District Three manager By ART HOLDEN Outdoor Editor AKRON — In taking over as manager of the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s 19-county District Three, Pete Novotny will bring a unique perspective to the job. Novotny has been with the Division of Wildlife since working as an intern in 1995 and graduating from wildlife officer training in 1996. He’s been the wildlife officer supervisor in Akron since 2002. But, Novotny didn’t grow up an outdoorsman. He grew up in Cleveland, graduated from St. Ignatius High School (1990) and Wittenberg University with a degree in biology in 1994. “Most people in this field grow up in traditional hunting and fishing families,” said Novotny. “No one in my family hunted or fished. In college, I took a hunter safety course and my first hunt was a deer hunt outside of Loudonville with a college friend of mine. “I was hooked from there.” It’s that late-to-the-party experience that Novotny hopes to capitalize on as the district’s new manager. “There’s a movement

afoot to reach out and provide classes, a mentoring system to people who want to learn how to hunt, fish and trap when they’re older,” said Novotny. “That speaks exactly to my (past).” Along those lines, Novotny plans to be out and about within the district, pushing a plan to reconnect with the DOW’s constituents. “I want to strengthen our relationships with the sportsmen and women, that’s what I’ve been tasked to do,” said Novotny. “It was a goal I presented during the interview process with the Columbus staff and the chief. It was the underlying theme when we were discussing the promotion ... It’s a different Division of Wildlife than the one I grew up in 20 years ago.” Novotny went on to say that for any wildlife agency to be successful, it has to be connected to all the people who enjoy the outdoors, not just the hunters, trappers and fishermen and women, but everyone. “We need to be acute listeners and apply our mission to their requests,” said Novotny. Novotny says he has no plans to change the district’s management objectives, and will continue to
rely on the expertise of the employees within the district. “I’m looking forward to getting input from our experts in the field,” said Novotny. “I want to listen to them and rely on those who have their boots on the ground.” Novotny said he won’t push his ideas until he has input from everyone involved. And, he realizes that funding will be a key
factor in the decisions that are made. “Funding will always be an issue,” he said. “Wildlife is always tied to funding.” Locally, an issue Novotny knows he’ll have to deal with right away is the continued Chronic Wasting Disease monitoring in Wayne and Holmes counties. “That’s one area I feel I have a very good back-

Fire claims Killbuck woman’s life
Cause of fire under investigation; no foul play suspected By CHRISTINE L. PRATT Staff Writer
KILLBUCK — Authorities are investigating the cause of a Dec. 30 night mobile home fire that claimed the life of a Killbuck woman and caused a responding firefighter to be hospitalized. Sarah S. Carpenter, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire, according
to Holmes County Sheriff Tim Zimmerly, whose deputies are working with State Fire Marshal’s Office investigators and Holmes County Coroner Dr. Robert Anthony to investigate the fatal fire at 675 N. Buckeye Alley. A Killbuck squad also transported to Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg a Killbuck firefighter who began experiencing symptoms of a cardiac episode while fighting the fire. He was later transferred to Aultman Hospital in Canton, said Killbuck fire Chief Keith Mohler. The fire was reported to the Sheriff’s Office via 9-1-1 around 8:22 p.m.
Killbuck Township fire and EMS personnel responded to the property to find the mobile home heavily involved with smoke and flames, according to a press release issued by Zimmerly, which notes the initial call suggested there may have been one or more people trapped inside. The fire traveled rapidly through the mobile home, which, because of building materials used and construction, is more vulnerable to fire than other structures, Mohler said. After the fire was brought under control, firefighters entered the residence and discovered Carpenter, already dead, according to
the sheriff’s report. Even before firefighters arrived, bystanders attempted to make a rescue attempt, and at least one entered the home, but was pushed back by smoke, fire and heat, according to Chief Deputy Richard Haun, noting Carpenter made no audible response to calls to her. The fire brought out many bystanders, said Mohler, explaining, “I think the whole Village of Killbuck was there.” And, while responders refused many offers of help, he said, he is particularly thankful to one man who helped in the early stages, assisting firefighters in
unrolling and laying hoses. The unknown man, Mohler said, disappeared before he could be properly thanked. “Seems like they all come together in time of need,” Mohler said of Killbuck residents in general. Mohler said he and many of the responding firefighters knew Carpenter, a longtime Killbuck resident. “She was a nice lady. Everybody liked her.” The cause of the fire is yet undetermined, but does not appear to be the product of foul play, said Zimmerly, who said the fire appears to have originated near a bedroom. Carpenter was located in the kitchen on the opposite end of the home.
“A structure fire is always a tragedy, but when someone loses their life in a fire, we just need to keep the family in our thoughts and prayers. It’s a real tragedy this happened,” said Zimmerly. Holmes County Coroner Dr. Robert Anthony examined the deceased at the scene, and the body was then transported by Smith Ambulance to the Stark County Coroner’s Office for autopsy, which will identify a cause of death. It is unknown if the home was equipped with working smoke detectors. While Carpenter’s son also resided in the mobile home, he was not at home at the time of the fire.

They must have caught it real soon.” The fire, Dial said, originated in the lower part of the chimney, into which was vented a wood-burning stove on the first floor of the house. The resident reported the chimney had become clogged Monday and he used a cleaning kit to brush it out, but was unable to remove the blockage entirely because he could not open the clean-out door. It is suspected the materials knocked to the bottom
of the chimney, which runs through the center of the house, were so hot they caught the substructure framing on fire, said Dial, adding the fire was declared contained and out at 5:26 a.m. The resident told firefighters he had restarted

personnel from Holmes Fire District No. 1, Prairie Township Volunteer Fire Department and East Holmes Fire & EMS Co., which responded with an air truck, which was used to refill tanks as they were used. There were no injuries.
