What do you really know about ice fishing? 7YV]PKLK I` 6+59 Ohioans have stowed their boats for the year and it’s time to focus on Ohio’s next big outdoor adventure — ice fishing. But before you head out this year, let’s see how much you really know about ice and ice fishing. Here’s a quick quiz to test your ice IQ. Which is safer, clear ice or cloudy ice? This is actually a trick question — no ice is safe ice. Regardless of how the ice looks, always proceed with caution since there are always thin spots on lakes and ponds. But, as far as which ice is better, clear ice is better than cloudy ice. It is very intimidating if you step out onto a lake or pond and INVENTORY ALWAYS ! CH CHANGING

can see clearly to the bottom. But with the way ice forms, the clearer it is, the less impurities and irregularities is has. So, inch for inch, clear ice is stronger since it purer. There is no one on the lake and I hear weird noises. Is that the sound of the ice cracking? Probably not. The ice on a lake is in a difficult position: cold air above, warm water below, and only so much room to expand. So when ice forms, it will actually “sing. This is the result of the ice pressing against itself as it expands. It is hard to describe, but with experience, you can distinguish between the muffled music of forming ice versus the dangerous sound of ice cracking. True or False — Speak-

ing of water temperatures, the warmest water will be near the top since the sun can still warm the water. False. Believe it or not, water can have different density depending on the temperature. Water is most dense when it is at 4°C (39°F). Instead of warm water at the top and cool water at the bottom in summer, the warmest water in the winter will be at the bottom while the coolest water will be at the top. This cool water will eventually freeze first and become the first layer of ice. So when you start 5,> >05;,9 /6<9:

your day ice fishing, try putting your lures near the bottom first since that is where it is the warmest. True or False — Why go ice fishing? The fish are “turned off, so they won’t bite. False. Just like everything else, fish need to eat to survive. Now granted, they do eat less when the waters get cold since their activity level decreases. But they do need to eat enough to maintain their body condition, and make it to the spring when they will reproduce. They aren’t going to eat much,

Fishing (From Page 4) True or False — During the winter, aquatic vegetation dies off, and the lake bottoms are flat with no features or cover for fish. False. Aquatic vegetation can last throughout the winter as long as sunlight can penetrate the ice. If you ever reel up some vegetation in the winter, and it is green, it is probably alive. However, if the ice is cloudy or there is an excess amount of snow on the ice, this can cause the vegetation to die off. If the die-off is severe enough, a “winter kill” of fish can happen since decomposing vegetation reduces oxygen in the water that fish need to survive.

Here are a few other pointers to keep in mind. Try to fish around other ice anglers so if you do fall through, someone might be there to help you get out. Remember to dress appropriately to prevent hypothermia and wear a life jacket or floatation suit when walking around on ice. Many anglers also take along an extra change of dry clothes just in case of an emergency. Keep your cell phone available, but protected from the elements. One of the great things about ice fishing is that tackle can be very simple and inexpensive. Short rods, light gear, light line and small baits are the ticket. Some anglers also like to use small bobbers as strike indica-

tors since strikes can be subtle. Tip-ups are a common addition to many ice anglers’ tackle, too. They come in a variety of designs, but essentially involve a spool of line hanging in the water with bait attached. Most store-bought versions feature a signaling device, such as a flag, that pops up when a fish takes the bait. In Ohio, anglers can have up to six tip-ups going at one time, and each must be labeled with the owner’s name and address. Ice fishing opportunities can be found in a variety of inland lakes and ponds, and Lake Erie as well, but the “Big Lake” warrants special considerations. For a variety of reasons, including safety, many anglers hire a

licensed ice fishing guide who can set them up in the protective shelter of a shanty and help them locate fish. The area between Green and Rattlesnake islands, just west of South Bass Island, usually offers some of the safest ice on the lake. For those targeting walleye, use minnows on jigging lures or blade baits. Yellow perch can be caught with a spreader or crappie rig tipped with shiners. Other things to remember before going ice fishing: Have a valid Ohio fishing license. Know the size and daily limits for the fish that you hope to catch. Learn the ice fishing regulations for where you are fishing

Make a checklist of things you will need to have fun and be safe. Consider leaving a “float plan” with someone who knows that you will be out on the ice, indicating where you plan to fish, where you plan to park your vehicle, and when you plan to return home. For boaters, this is common practice, and for ice anglers, it’s not a bad idea either. Once the freeze is on, check the most recent ice fishing reports, or make a quick stop at the local bait shop to find out what’s biting and where. As always, be safe when you head out on the ice and for more information, call 1-800-WILDLIFE or contact your local Wildlife District Office.

No babying the baby of the family

Kristin and I are each the youngest of our respective families. She was the tiebreaker for what had been a tidy one boy, one girl set; and I was the tie-maker in a squad that topped out at four and four. In either case it was typical of elder siblings to claim we were treated specially because of our status as “the baby of the family” — even going so far as to suggest we were “spoiled.” I would refute such claims — once I was old enough to run very swiftly — by saying that each of my siblings had gotten their own shot at being the baby of the family but had apparently blown it, forcing my parents to go back to the drawing board again and again until

Classic finally landing at perfection. These comments won little empathy, and I was consequently administered an inordinate number of Dutch rubs and monkey bumps while

growing up. Kristin shared a similar experience albeit in a considerably smaller dose. The elder two of our own three children have long claimed Sylvia, our youngest, is treated with

precious adoration simply because she is the youngest. This is patently untrue. And while the similarities in our shared experience as youngest, youngest and See Pg. 17 — BABY

thing or two about girls basketball. That would be a fair assessment. Tom Jenkins is an attorney turned coach turned writer, who has published the Ohio Girls Basketball Report for 18 years. OGBR is considered the No. 1 single-state (Ohio) scouting service for colleges. Jenkins teams with Hiland girls basketball

43-point blowout of Africentric in 2009. The Nubians wound up winning the D-IV state title that same year. That’s how good Regina was. For the most part, the games are nail-biters, right down to the wire. One might get the impression that the people putting this event together might know a See Pg. 11 — CLASSIC

Classic (From Page 10) coach Dave Schlabach and his staff to put together the Classic in the Country Challenge, with a lot of help from people throughout the Holmes County Community. And these folks don’t bring the same teams back year after year. Of the 789 schools in Ohio that have varsity girls basketball, 215 of those teams

will have participated in the Classic in the Country Challenge. That is 27 percent of all the schools in Ohio that have come to play in Berlin, Ohio, during Classic in the Country’s 13-year run. “We try to turn over one-third to half of the field of teams every year, Jenkins said. “We try to provide opportunities for everybody. More than half of the

2016 field of 30 teams weren’t here last year as 16 teams, including 13 teams making their debut at the Classic this year, are scheduled to play. The schedule also includes three of the four reigning state champions, as well as a trio of the top four Div. I teams from last year, including the champion Firebirds of Lakota West. Two of the top four teams from Div. II, including defending champion Archbishop Alter and runner-up West Holmes, will also be playing here that weekend. Div. III final four finalist Chippewa, and perennial Div. IV powers Hiland and reigning champion Fort Loramie will be playing here as well, along with many other top-rat-

ed teams from throughout the state. This year’s sophomore class features some of the most talented players in the country, as rated by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and OGBR. “The class of 2018 will be the second best class we’ve had in the 18 years I’ve been doing this, Jenkins said. “The 2003 class, from which we had 103 Div. 1 signees (the most of any state in America) had five McDonald’s AllAmericans. There should be 90-plus D-I signees out of the class of ’18, and possibly four McDonald’s All-Americans from that class. Jenkins noted that 14 of the top rated 15 players from the class of 2018 will

be playing at this year’s Classic, 18 of the top 20, and 22 of the top 25 sophomores in the state, along with some nationally ranked players. Solon’s 6-3 sophomore center Valencia Myers is the No. 2 ranked post player in the country and was a member of the 16-U USA Basketball team that

played over the summer in Mexico. Other Top 10 players from the class of 2018 include USA teammate Bexley Wallace of Pickerington Central (a 6-2 forward ranked No. 5 in the country by CGBR), Jackson point guard Taylor Mikesell (No. See Pg. 16 — CLASSIC

Farming Winter weather doesn’t slow down dairy activities For weeks we had been wondering where winter was — now we know — it is here. Cold, minus wind chill, 50 mile an hour winds, snow — it has arrived. Things are back to normal for this time of year — frozen water pipes, drifts, tractors that won’t start, concerns about icy roads and getting the milk trucks in. Baby calves are huddling in their hutches. Everyone has had to dig out their sweatshirts, hoodies, thermal underwear, Carhartts,

How to stop a telemarketer right in his tracks

My grandfather hated telemarketers and when the phone would ring, he would wait for the person on the other end of the line to offer him something. It was then, and only then, that I would hear him break out into the fluent Polish language that he grew up with but vowed to never speak again. Eventually, that’s how he got rid of

Of all of these things, I am not particularly proud, but it passes the time and as someone who refuses to grow up, I can think of no better way to deal with these calls. But then one evening the phone rang, and something happened. As usual, I looked at See Pg. 22 — STOP

When my phone rings with an unfamiliar number, I expect it to be a recorded voice telling me I won a trip to the Bahamas or asking me to take a survey. My choices are as follows: Ignore the phone call, answer it and politely listen to what is being said, or, what has been my go-to fun for quite some time, answer the phone in a ridiculous

Welcome to

New Bedford Hang up ... do not call until later in the week It’s hard to believe, but I hate using the telephone. When there are calls that need to be made I will procrastinate for as long as possible and by then there is a long list of calls that need to be made. I was determined to get a hold of the Social Security office to let them know my address has changed. For some reason our notice of the change for The Man of the House worked, but mine did not. I spent a long time on hold the last time I tried to call. This time I thought I would outsmart them by calling the local office in Charleston instead of the national office in Chicago. There was a number on their website. I waited until late morning on a Monday. Can you believe it? A recording said it was no longer a working number! And furthermore, if I wanted a “similar business in that area they had a number for Dish TV or ADT Home Security. How are those similar? For a small charge I could get the information

ing to fill up for January. For many years I would cram as many activities as humanly possible into a 24-hour day. They ride three miles down the road to the Publix grocery store where they sit on the bench and watch the pretty girls go by. When they are rested enough they make the ride back home. Right now they are anxiously awaiting the opening of a new breakfast place where they can get a cup of coffee while girl watching.

Final Four, says it’s hard to believe that anything can be done to improve the Classic in the Country. “The expectations in the basketball community around the state are very high,” Schlabach said. “Everyone expects it to be a great event. The best players in the

state are here. Especially when you look at that sophomore class. We’re expecting one of the largest college coaching crowds ever on Monday (Jan. 18), because of all those great sophomores. That should create a lot of attention by our college followers. Everyone expects great games.”

Schlabach adds that several of the hotels in the area are already booked solid. “We’re expecting to see great crowds and another really good event,” he said. Doug Burgess, general manager of the Berlin Grande Hotel, says he is amazed at how the Clas-

the most classic example of this happened just the other day when she arrived home from school in her little pickup truck. “Hey Dad, um, I think there’s something wrong with my truck, she said. “When I slowed down to

Homeowners liable for snow, ice control (BPT) — It’s common to see shopping centers and business owners out and about clearing snow and

homeowners are responsible for limiting dangers on their property, but in some cases, this can also extend to public sidewalks abutting your home. Shoveling snow is simple, but ice removal is another matter. Salt lowers water’s freezing point, the temperature at which it changes from a liquid to a solid and vice versa. The most effective way to use salt is to melt the snow or ice that is right at the pavement. If you can do this, then you will find it much

easier to shovel the snow or ice from the sidewalk. This process, preventing water from freezing in the first place, is called anti-icing. It is best achieved by putting salt (or some other anti-icing material) on the sidewalk when a freeze or a snowfall is expected. In contrast, melting water already frozen is called deicing and in this case salt is applied once ice appears. It still works, but is less efficient than anti-icing. See Pg. 21 — ICE

Laws regarding snow and ice clearing vary by state and from locality to locality, but most mandate some action be taken within a reasonable time period (often 24 hours) after it stops snowing. The dangers from slips and falls should not be taken lightly. Each year thousands are rushed to emergency rooms as a result of icy falls with injuries that could have easily been prevented.

Stop (From Page 14) the number, which came from a town in another state. “I don’t know anyone from that part of Michigan, I said to my daughter, hit the answer button on the phone and proceeded to make a ripping flatulence noise and

mumble “yallo? from the side of my mouth. There was, as usual, a pause. This is normally where the recording kicks in. But this time after the pause, I heard, “Mrs. McAllister? and I got that sinking feeling in my stomach that I had just done something that would make me want to slap myself. And so, it is with great

The Holmes County Hub Shopper sincerity that I would like to publicly apologize to my daughter’s teacher who called to update us on one of her extracurricular activities that had been planned for the week. A fairly new teacher, he had recently moved to the area and thus was calling with an out-ofstate cell number and didn’t realize he was call-

ing an out-of-her-mind parent who somehow, at nearly 40 years old, still thinks fart noises are funny. Just in case he ever has to call again, I have his number saved and will politely say “hello as soon as I finish laughing. Stop by and say hi at www.KarrieMcAllister. com.
