Harvest Thrift Store began 10 years ago in Sugarcreek and is located below Swissters, near the intersection of 39 and 93, with a vision for helping young people to reach their full potential.

A second store opened in Wilmot, and the board helped start another store in Killbuck that has gone on its own. With the support of the surrounding community, a successful enterprise was formed.

It got too big for the church to operate,” said Andrea Hostetler, one of the board members. “Some people donated money, some donated material, like shelves for the store, and others donated their time.” There are 15 employees at the two stores, which are open six days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hostetler had operated a retail mail order business out of her home prior to

taking over operations of the Harvest Thrift Store. She says the transition has been relatively easy, because she works with so many good people. “To date, we have provided financial support in excess of $200,000,”

Holmes-Wayne Electric thanks veterans through Honor Trip When Holmes-Wayne Electrical Co-op members, Robyn Tate and Karole Butler, were looking for assistance with an area veterans’ project, they turned to Wayne County Veteran of the Year Roger Pennell. The Holmes-Wayne team had a project to find a way to thank and remember the sacrifice and dedication of vet-

erans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Using the Honor Flight Program as such an example. The goal of the project is to find a way to take area veterans to their respective memorials in Washington, D.C., with no cost to the veterans themselves. Over the past couple of months, Holmes-Wayne Co-op

members, area veteran organizations including Shreve American Legion Post 67, Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 and the Wayne County Marine Corps League have met to launch this program. “It is our way of letting our veterans know they’re not forgotten,” said Tate. The project was named Holmes-Wayne Honor Trip because the

veterans will be transported to Washington, D.C by bus rather than flying. The committee again based the idea on taking the veterans there with no cost to them. Volunteers are already lining up to help. Even though they will assume the cost of their own trip expenses. Medical personnel, veteran escorts and a variety

Full Spectrum, a Dix division devoted to marketing needs WOOSTER — Full Spectrum Marketing, a full service advertising agency with expertise in digital and social media that has joined Dix Communications, owner of The Daily Record, has emerged as the corporation’s fastest growing division. Founded as a digital agency that built websites and conducted basic social media advertising for clients, Full Spectrum Marketing, having expanded its focus to full service and marketing solutions, has grown its client base by 300 percent since becoming part of Dix Communications, its President Josh Gordon said.

Gordon

“We’re forecasting another triple digit revenue projection for 2016,” he said. “Our client roster is nearly 100 and still growing.” Gordon joined Dix along with Michael Salvi, Full Spectrum’s vice president of business development, in April. Salvi’s back-

ground includes work for Disney, Pepsi, Frito Lay and Capital One. He also built a multi-million dollar line of business for Honey Baked Ham. “We focus on being good listeners and good, creative developers,” Gordon said. “We work to understand who an organization is trying to reach and activate and then build custom strategies and tactical marketing plans that are measurable.” G. Gordon Dix, the president and CEO of Dix Communications, oversaw the expansion of Full Spectrum. Dix said bringing in Full Spectrum amounted to “a

recognition of the importance of digital and social media as another way to serve our good customers and expand our base to include new customers.” Citing Dix Communication’s background in print and broadcast, he said the Full Spectrum initiative “gives us new tools to help our advertisers reach their customers and find new ones.” Andrew S. Dix, publisher of The Daily Record, called Full Spectrum, “a huge benefit for our advertisers.” “The expertise, talent and affordable tools that Full Spectrum brings to our local community

businesses is exciting,” Andrew Dix said. “Full Spectrum’s services, along with our newspaper and radio reach, now give our advertisers — both big and small — great adagency tools to grow their businesses.” Gordon said his approach emphasizes good planning and measurable results. “Our clients,” he said, “have a lot more success when they have a good marketing plan. We help them develop one, but also work to eliminate wasteful spending.” The team at Full Spectrum is composed of a talented group that has won several awards. Team members in the

past have developed creative work for JoAnn Fabric, Hulu, Pandora, AAA and Universal Screen Arts. Locally, clients include Conversations & Co. in Tallmadge, Ravenna and Barberton Schools, the Kent State University Athletic Department and global medical device manufacturers. Full Spectrum, he said, sells deliverables, not hours, so the customers know up front what they are getting for their investment. “I was once billed several thousand dollars for educating an agency about my own marketplace,” he recalled. “That should See Pg. 9 — SPECTRUM

Close encounters of the winter driving kind A mere week after silently coasting my teenaged daughter’s outof-gas truck down four blocks of Main Street to arrive pump-side at the neighborhood gas station I was back behind the wheel of the little green pickup again. This time it was the weather, rather than a lack of fuel, that put me in the driver’s seat. Winter had suddenly arrived at 10:35 a.m. the previous morning — I know this time exactly because I was riding my bicycle 10 miles from home when the temperature dropped 20 degrees and a light mist turned into skin-scouring sideways sleet. Later that afternoon, while Kristin and I were out, Sylvia found herself frozen-out of a ride when she walked from the house to discover both doors of her truck sealed by the sleet. Had the cold come earlier in the weekend I would have had an opportunity to stage a workshop on cold-weather driving skills with the girl, including a lesson on the fine art of unfreezing doors with a simmering pan of water, but with Monday morning only a

Exploring a new town for future getaways We made a quick little getaway up to the mountains last week. We jokingly told people around here that we did it to get away from the heat. Actually it’s been quite chilly here in Lowcountry, but we left because The Man of the House was bored and wanted to celebrate his birthday a bit early. We made the three-hour drive up to Hendersonville, North Carolina and stayed two nights at the quaint Echo Mountain Inn. The trip was explor-

atory in nature for future getaways when it is actually hot down here. We figured out where the best place is to get an Egg McMuffin (exit 159) on the way up, and the best exit (53) to take in Hendersonville to avoid the major traffic.

We lunched both days at the Mountain Deli on Main Street. It had the best quality of meats we had ever tasted. One day it was a great Italian sub and the next it was rare roast beef with horseradish sauce. It would be worth a drive just to eat there. Dinner the first night was actually just an appetizer of spinach and artichoke dip and chips at Hannah Flanagan’s Irish Pub. It was in an antiquated, interesting building.

We had a disappointing dinner the second night at Mezzaluna on Main Street. The Man of the House wanted spaghetti with marinara sauce but of course that was not on the menu. Instead he got some angel hair pasta pomodoro which meant with tomatoes. It was a very weak sauce. I got a large salad that was OK so we shared some of each. At least the bread was good. Maybe the food did not excite us so much because

we had eaten dessert first that night. We discovered (thanks to granddaughter Liz from Granville, Ohio) that there was a Whit’s in Hendersonville. We tracked it down with some difficulty, but found it to be quite large and doing well after being in business only nine weeks. The frozen custard was delicious. As for touring around, we visited the DuPont State Recreational Forest. We saw only a wee bit of its 10,473 acres since it

Farming A tale about a farm dog who became a hero When I was a little girl growing up most farms had a dog. On some farms it was a dog that was specially bred to be a “stock dog,” whose job it was to herd various types of livestock. On other farms it was just a “farm dog” to herd livestock, catch groundhogs, play with the kids, be a “watch dog” when someone came around and more. Our dog was a bob-tailed shepherd named Stubby. My dad purchased him from a local breeder. I never quite understood why the pups were bobtailed, but he had a short tail that he could wag. The cows were out on pasture and had a large area to roam over. There were times when they didn’t come home at

and jet black. I named him Rex. Stubby and Rex usually went everywhere with me. I loved the team of draft horses that my Dad drove. I would follow everywhere they were being worked and dream of the day when I could drive them. I decided I could have my own “team.” I gathered up some rope clothesline and fashioned my own harness to fit Rex and Stubby. I drove my “team” everywhere. I had a small wagon that I hooked up to them and then I could haul “stuff.” That worked well until one day when a neighbor came up the

road with his horses hitched to a grain drill. When the dogs saw him, away they went, down through the yard, over a stone wall, barking and dragging a rattling wagon all the way. Fortunately the neighbor had a very docile team of horses who, while startled, didn’t run away! I was crying and so mad at my dogs for not listening to me and the neighbor was doubled over in laughter! My Mom loved chickens and she always had a big flock that ran free everywhere. Of course, there was a big, old, red rooster and he was mean. He would run at

you, attack and “flop” you every chance he got and I was afraid of him. One day I went out in the yard to play and he took after me. I started to run and scream and out of nowhere came Stubby. He ran right over that old rooster, both of them tumbling over and over, with grass and hair and feathers flying everywhere. When the dust cleared, the rooster was running for the chicken house and Stubby was standing looking at me, spitting red feathers out of his mouth and wagging his stub tail. He was no longer just an ordinary farm dog, Stubby was my hero!

looked much more promising. We stopped at the through Saluda, North restaurant where the locals Carolina, a little railroad hang out. It had a lot of town in the mountains. That character (and characters.)

Then we drove around until we found the town visitor center. That is not exactly how we would describe it. It was more like a teeny shed with a few brochures and maps — no person or rest rooms. We picked up some literature that told about a bed and breakfast near downtown. We set out to find it but were unsuccessful the first try. Finally, after reading the directions on the brochure, we found Charles Street Suite tucked in behind a lot of trees and bushes. We asked to see their room and were very pleased at the accommodations and the proximity of downtown. It was so foggy the day we drove home that we could barely see the mountains. Thankfully, as soon as we were out of the mountains the fog was gone. We will need to go again to see what we missed.

Farming Pesticide, fertilizer certification events announced OSU Extension Wayne and Holmes Counties will be collaborating to provide private applicator pesticide recertification and fertilizer certification. There is no program fee to attend fertilizer certification. Anyone who already has a pesticide applicators license can attend either a two-hour or a three-hour fertilizer certification program to get their fertilizer certification. Those who do not have a pesticide applicators license must attend a three-hour program to get their fertilizer certification. There is a $35 fee to attend the pesticide recertification program. This is in addition to the $30 applicators send in to the Ohio Department of Agriculture to renew their license, so essentially private applicators are paying $65 every three years to maintain their license. The scheduled dates, times and locations for 2016 meetings are as follows: — Jan. 28: Sponsored by Shearer Equipment John Deere. Private pesticide recertification at 9 a.m. at Fisher Auditorium, OARDC in Wooster. Training provided in Core and categories 1, 2 and 6. Fertilizer certification offered from 1-4 p.m. — Feb. 9: Fertilizer Certification three-hour meeting. Fisher Auditorium OARDC campus, Wooster, 12:30-3:30 p.m. — Feb. 12: Fisher Auditorium, (North Exhibit Area) OARDC, Wooster. Fertilizer certification 10 a.m.-noon. Private pesticide recertification 12:453:45 p.m. Training in Core and categories 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. — Feb. 16: Mount Hope Auction Barn, 8076 State

office at 330-264-8722 and providing your name, address and phone number. The $35 program fee can be paid at the door or can be sent in to the Wayne County Extension office before the program. Checks for the pesticide recertification program fee ($35) can be made payable to OSU Extension and sent to the Wayne County Extension office at 428 W. Liberty St., Wooster OH 44691. This will speed up the sign-in process when you arrive. A receipt for your payment will be available when you sign in at the program. Applicators are encouraged to arrive 15-20 minutes before the advertised program starting time, to allow for signin and picking up handout materials. Please take your pesticide applicator license number with you to the training. For those who will be attending a combination fertilizer certification and pesticide recertification meeting, we will offer a pizza lunch option for somewhere in the $5-$7 range, or you can take a brown bag lunch. The pizza lunch option is not offered for the Jan. 28 or the Feb. 16 meetings. I received some phone calls from applicators who attended fertilizer certification last year and have a fertilizer certificate that expires in 2016. They also have a pesticide license that expires in 2016. They wonder if they need to attend another fertilizer certification program. According to the ODA: “They do not need to sit through another two-hour fertilizer course prior to then, they just need to get their pesticide credits and

Where will wildlife funding come from in the future? How’s this for an opening statement? Wildlife conservation is dying a slow death. In fact, it may not be as slow as we think. In a report that crossed my desk this week about annual Ohio hunting and fishing license sales, sent out by the Division of Wildlife, the numbers are hauntingly dismal. Not just in Ohio, but across the nation, the decline of hunters and fishermen and women, those who pay the biggest chunk of our wildlife management dollars, are dwindling at an alarming rate. For instance, Ohio sold more resident hunting licenses in 1925 (362,792), than it did in

Art Holden Daily Record Outdoor Editor

2014 (272,196). In fact, Ohio has seen a decline of 200,000 resident hunting licenses in the last 30 years, meaning the Division of Wildlife is losing $5 million every seven years. The most resident Ohio hunting licenses ever sold was in 1949 (736,381). It’s the same story with fishing licenses, only not as drastic of a loss. Ohio hit an all-time high of 1,082,496 resident fishing licenses in the Lake Erie walleye heydays of 1987,

while in 2014, the number was 663,621 licenses sold. If the money is not there to maintain the quality and quantity of wildlife, then there is no wildlife. And without wildlife and people interested in it, conservation loses. While we are losing funding, and wildlife agencies are having to do more with less (they are certainly not the only ones facing this problem), the more disturbing fact is what effect it will have on future generations. Today’s youth and young adults seem more concerned with social media and electronic games than hiking, fishing, trapping, bird watch-

ing and hunting. Conservation, which requires forward thinking, funding, boots on the ground and a constant influx of new recruits, is akin to education, it’s an investment in the future. Problem is, our investment dollars are decreasing. In our rural area of Wayne and Holmes counties, our youth are introduced to the outdoors far more than most American children. Still, it’s not enough. Our outdoor clubs, which face dwindling number issues as well, do their part with youth events, but they can only reach a select few. the Schools are a step in the right direction, but even more needs to be done to protect the future of wildlife conservation. If our young people aren’t going to be taught about the outdoors at home, then the best place to influence them is through the educational system. The future counts on it. Teachers and administrators need to take advantage of DNRoffered programs, come up with their own, or collaborate with groups such as the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited or Whitetails Unlimited, just to name a few organizations fighting the good fight. Give our youth a taste of the outdoors, and then let them decide if they want to be a part of the rich heritage. Without an introduction, they’ll never have the chance. The declining trend of

American sportsmen must be reversed. If we continue on the current path, the sportsman will be extinct in our grandchildren’s generation (remember, Ohio lost 200,000 hunters in the last 30 years). The bleak picture means wildlife funds are going to have to come from somewhere else. Our conservation future is going to have to include funds from the ever growing segment of “wildlife watchers, whether that’s through taxes on their equipment, fees they pay at local, state and national parks, or some other financial avenue. We all need to be willing to foot the bill. If we aren’t willing to spend more than a $1 on wildlife conservation, than in the future we may only find a dollar’s worth of wildlife. Think about it.

MILLERSBURG — West Holmes wrestler Cole Woods hopes he has a few more upsets left in him. That could allow the Knights’ senior 145-pounder to check off the only highlight that’s eluded him in high school: win a state title. Ranked fourth in the state in Div. II in his weight class by Intermat.com and owning a 31-2 record in 2015-16, Cole’s dad/coach Jeff Woods paid his eldest son a big compliment when asked what’s his greatest strength as a wrestler. Rather than say something like takedowns or technique, strength or speed, Coach Woods talked about Cole’s mental approach. “I would say Cole’s bread and butter would just be believing that he can win every match,” Coach Woods said. “I think his mindset is the bigger the match, the better he wrestles. “I don’t think he walks onto the mat ever thinking he’ll lose a match, even this week against (Massillon Perry’s) David Carr, who’s ranked No. 1 in the country. Losing 14-8 to him at the

school. “Words would not be able to describe it if I could win state, that’s for sure.” Cole, whose junior brother Cody Woods owns a 16-11 record at 138, is ranked behind Rocky Jordan (St. Paris Graham), Sandro Ramirez (Wauseon) and Gage Grunden (Defiance). This past weekend, Cole showed his mettle when he went 5-2 to place fourth at Alliance’s Top Gun, which is one of the country’s toughest tournaments. He lost in the semifinals against Div. I Massillon Perry’s Carr, who had just been highlighted in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.” “You’ve just gotta go out and wrestle,” Cole said. “If you lose, it’s not a big deal. If you win, it’s a big deal. I just block the outside stuff out, do my best and whatever happens happens.” Although Jeff Woods has enjoyed a fantastic career

at West Holmes after going to state as a high schooler for Triway, he admits that coaching his sons has been a unique challenge. “It’s a little more difficult,” Jeff said with a laugh. See Pg. 20 — MINDSET

Mindset (From Page 19) “It’s a little bit hard to separate being a father and a coach sometimes when you go home and you’re still into wrestling, but it’s definitely been enjoyable as a parent I would say.” Renee Woods, the wife/

mom in the household, has sometimes had to step in and be the referee. “She keeps us grounded, that’s for sure,” Jeff said. Cole said wrestling for his dad has had its ups and downs, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. “If it’s a bad day in practice it can translate right back into home and just keeps on going,” he said.

“If it’s a good day, we come home and it’s real nice. We can talk about wrestling a little more, what I can work on and it’s an advantage for me because I get more time with the coach and get to learn some more things.” Cole has been able to find a way to strike his own balance, by also playing four years of varsity soccer instead of specializing

in just wrestling like many these days. “I did soccer because it’s fun to do something else, instead of just making wrestling my life,” said Cole, who plans to wrestle in college, but isn’t sure where yet. “I also did it because of conditioning and I still did wrestling one or two times a week.” Jeff said Cole is well-

rounded on the mat, excelling at takedowns and performing well in the top or bottom positions. “Endurance-wise, it’s getting better,” Coach Woods added. “Hopefully we haven’t peaked yet.” Wrestling fans will get to see West Holmes in action Saturday (Jan. 23) when it hosts the Knights Invitational starting at 10 a.m. Defending WH Invite champ Carrollton, Smithville, Indian Valley and Indian Creek are expected to be some of the Knights’ top challengers. Also in the field will be Triway, Orrville, Manchester, Carrollton, Keystone, Maysville, Medina Buckeye and Tuscarawas Central Catholic. It will be a pool-style tournament with the top grapplers in each pool meeting in the finals.

Jeff Woods stays in coach mode on the mat most of the time with Cole. No matter how this season ultimately finishes, it will be an ending loaded with emotions unlike any the veteran mat boss has ever experienced. “Definitely Cole’s up there at the top,” said Coach Woods, when asked to compare Cole to past Knights. “He’s proven himself year in and year out, as far as getting to the state tournament and placing and those type of things. “We’re hoping for the best for this year and to end on a good note and hopefully carry it on to college.” Aaron Dorksen can be reached at 330-287-1621 or adorksen@the-dailyrecord.com. In August, Hiller was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty in Holmes County Common Pleas Court to assault on a police officer. Less than a month later, on Sept. 2, he was granted early release from jail and was placed on electronically monitored house arrest. The charge stemmed from a Feb. 20 incident at a business along South Washington Street. Millersburg Police were called to the business after Hiller, apparently intoxicated, Their Price

Responding officers arrived as Hiller, who had paid for the road flares, was exiting the business. Hiller, however, failed to provide officers with information regarding his identification, as required by law, and he partially head-butted one of the officers attempting to solicit the information, said Vaughn. The officers reportedly detected an odor of alcohol on Hiller. At Hiller’s sentencing hearing, defense attorney Jeff Kellogg told Judge Robert Rinfret that Hiller, throughout, his life has

used alcohol to cope, and “basically had, I believe, one very dramatic incident in his life. “I’m not going to minimize an altercation with
