Pride in Stow—2016 style! I am excited by this year’s offerings for our community’s annual Pride Fest celebration! There truly is something for every family to enjoy, capped off by one of Northeast Ohio’s largest parades on the 4th of July. There is so much to be proud of in Stow. I love the fact that our community comes together to support each other in both good times and in difficult periods. Whether we are cheering on the high school football team to victory or helping a family in our neighborhood when they are in need, Stow is the kind of place where all families, all individuals are valued and welcomed. That is truly something to be proud of! Please join my family in celebrating our pride in our community—Pride Fest 2016! March into Stow for the Fourth of July Parade A longtime tradition that closes out Stow Pride Festival week, the Fourth of July Parade draws tens of thousands to its route along Kent Road (Route 59), both as participants and watchers. Boasting a theme of “America’s Great People,” the committee is planning for this year’s parade to be the biggest and best so far, and is anticipating more than 120 entries in the parade. The parade is sponsored by the city of Stow Parks & Recreation Department and the Kiwanis Club of Stow-Munroe Falls. As always, the parade steps off at 10 a.m. on the Fourth of July from Stow-Kent Shopping Center and travels down Kent Road past Holy Family Church, and ends at Park Drive. A reviewing stand will be located at Kent and Elm roads. The parade has moved into the technical age — a parade tracking app, PARADETRAK will assist in providing the ultimate parade experience for parade spectators. The smartphone app has the ability for spectators to track the parade en-

tries as they move along the parade route. Additionally, users are able to get directions to, and information about the parade, as well as information about the individual entries. Motorists should be aware they place that morning. The app is available for iPhones and will see road closings in Stow with Because of the two events, Kent iPads at the Apple App Store and two major events (the parade and for Android smartphones and tabSee Parade, Page 15 the earlier Firecracker Run) taking lets in Google Play.

Ice Cream X-treme, pancake breakfast traditions
KO-10473142
The annual Ice Cream X-treme and all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast events will be returning to the Stow community during Stow Pride Festival. The events, hosted by the First Christian Church of Stow, located at 3493 Darrow Road, have become a yearly tradition within the community. Ice Cream X-treme event will be June 21 from 5 to 8 p.m.. According to the Rev. Jonathan Rumburg, the church wanted to “up their game,” for the event, so last year, they enhanced the menu and renamed it an “Ice Cream X-treme.” There will be hot dogs, sloppy joes and sloppy dogs, ice cream sundaes, root beer floats, pie a la
mode, chips and pop, all priced at $2 or less. There will be live entertainment at both events. Rumburg hinted that there will be contemporary church songs played, but did mention that they could be open to some requests. For the kids, there will be a free Bouncy House to burn off energy from all the sweet treats. Rumburg said these events have been a staple of the Stow community for more than half of a century. He is expecting more people to show up this year because of the changes and enhancements made to the event. “The goal and the purpose of these events is to continue to be a presence in our community,” Rumburg said. “First Chris-
tian Church in Stow has been a part of the Stow community for generations. We’re over 180 years old. We love our community and we love being able to host folks in our community for good wholesome, family-centered entertainment throughout the summer and that’s what we aim to do.”
with such a large number of people in attendance, Rumburg still expects leftovers. “We open our doors at 7 a.m. on the Fourth of July,” Rumburg said. “We will be ready to serve an all-you-caneat pancake breakfast. Usually when it comes to the pancakes, there are definitely pancakes
left over.” No different than last year, there will be a group of local Boy Scout Troop volunteers attending to help with serving those in attendance. There will be plenty of parking available for both events. Those attending are advised to park in the church parking lot. “Just like our church
has been a constant presence in the community for 180 years, we feel strongly about making these community center opportunities a tradition as well,” Rumburg said. “I think folks know when they come to these events, they get good food, and good times, in the heart of the Stow community.”
July 4 pancake breakfast The pancake breakfast has been a tradition for nearly 50 years and it takes place every July 4 (unless it falls on a Sunday). The allyou-can-eat pancake breakfast will consist of pancakes, sausage patties, coffee, maple syrup, tea and juice. Rumburg is expecting around 600 people to show up to the pancake breakfast. Even

Library offers day to appreciate its patrons by taylor rosen | Reporter
If you’re in desperate need of one of those relaxing days consisting of free coffee, ice cream, cookies, games and entertainment — look no farther than the annual Stow-Munroe Falls Library Patron Appreciation Day. “We have always had an event for Stow Pride Week,” said Ann Malthaner, marketing and public relations manager of Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. “We have had employees working here for 25 years and we have been doing it for as long as they have been here. It’s tradition and we are proud to be involved.” Last year, the library was transformed into a carnival for a day to show appreciation to its patrons during the community’s Pride Week. There won’t be a carnival this year, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t plenty of fun in store for attendees.
The fun times will begin on June 30 when the authors of the book, “Ah-Choo,” Gloria Adams and Lana Koehler, will be offering those in attendance a chance to have their own personal copy of the book signed. The two will be signing books on the balcony of the children’s department from 9 a.m. through noon. After the meet and greet, adults and children can enjoy a performance that will be put on by the Community Jazz Band. The performance will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
But the fun doesn’t stop there — after you’ve snapped your fingers to some catchy jazz, both adults and teenagers are encouraged to head outside for some classic games of Twister, Jumbo Jenga and Tic-Tac-Toe from 3:30 to 5 p.m. “The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library is a magical place for children, especially in the summer,” said Malthaner. “We have events almost on a daily basis. Last summer we had 2,339 children participate in summer reading and they read 23,580 hours. We have great programming for children and we will have a little something for everyone on Patron Appreciation Day.” Those who don’t feel like participating in any of the outdoor games are invited to cool down with some free ice cream. Or you can head back inside to meet the balloon twisters and face painters. You’ll have the op-
portunity to have your face painted and any animal balloon creation of your choice from 4 to 5 p.m. The library will be unveiling and installing new monitors on the first floor of the library. “With the installation of 24 brand new patron computers with 27-inch monitors, our library is a great equalizer for people who don’t have internet service,” Malthaner said. “We offer services and products that level the intellectual playing field. Anyone, of any income level or background, can access high-quality information, use computers, or borrow what they want. Our library ensures knowledge and technology are available to everyone, not just to those who can afford their own.” The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library might have saved the best event of the day for last. Chamber’s Pride Breakfast spotlights businesses, community members With the spotlight on businesses and the community, the Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce will host its 43nd Pride Community Breakfast on June 29. The “full country breakfast” and ceremonies will take place from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Acker-Moore Memorial Post, 3733 Fishcreek Road in Stow. During the event, the Chamber and the Stow Sentry will announce the Business Person of the Year award. This will be the 38th year the newspaper and the Chamber have joined to honor a businessperson for his or her work and community involvement. “We are expecting a great turnout again for the Pride Breakfast,” said Doris Stewart, executive director of the Chamber. “We always have members of our local civic organizations and government officials that join us in celebrating the winners of the Business, Volunteer, and Friend of the Community awards. Several students from Stow-Munroe Falls High School choir will be on-hand to sing a couple patriotic songs for the audience.”
