The three pillars That Define Tallmadge A small town places what it values at its center. One only needs to navigate the historic Tallmadge Circle each day to be reminded of our town’s core values. The founding fathers placed three things at that Circle, a church, a school, and a monument to the men and women that lost their lives serving our nation. Those three values are also at the core of the Tallmadge City Schools. This is a faith based community that promotes tolerance. Our families continue to value education as our founding fathers did. As one of the pillars of this small town we continue to serve all of its children with world class opportunities. The third value at the circle represented

by the monument to service is reflected daily in our schools. From our youngest elementary school children to our graduates you will see them serving throughout this community, whether it is working with our local Lions, Rotary, and Kiwanis Club or fundraising for local charities. The Tallmadge City Schools are proud to serve this community and look forward to doing so into the future. Sincerely III Jeffrey M. Ferguson Superintendent Tallmadge City Schools

BY III Mark Fairhurst, Chad Nash & Builder’s Club Students Today’s Tallmadge Kiwanis Club is an extension of the original Tallmadge Club, started over a generation ago. While our current mission is not so dissimilar — changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time — our purpose and support is uniquely focused on the children. And through them, we are serving both them and the community. In 2014, and as a “satellite” club of the Downtown Akron Kiwanis Club, we launched a Kiwanis Builder’s Club for the students in Tallmadge’s Middle School. Our satellite club idea has allowed us to forgo some of the prototypical club trappings and overhead structure, freeing up members to

put their time and energy directly into helping the kids. Worldwide, the Kiwanis Builder’s Clubs report 37,850 members, located in 23 nations. Together, their achievements and successes are many. Today, the Tallmadge Kiwanis Builder’s Club has 24 students, consisting of 8 students from each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Students are nominated by their teachers to join the club after showing an aptitude for leadership and community involvement. The students meet once a week to work in subcommittees and also meet once a month as a whole club to simulate a professional meeting. The Builder’s Club has 5 projects they have committed to this school year. First is the Senior Citizens Safety program providing free in-home safety checks, and fire department installed lockboxes for senior citi“KIWANIS” CONTINUED ON PG. 6

zens. The goal is to help our senior citizens be prepared in case of emergencies. Secondly, the students are working with the mayor and fire department to repaint neighborhood fire hydrants in their Paint the Plugs project. Third, is the Literature with Little Ones project, where students visit Childscape Learn and Grow to read to children and help their teachers. Fourth, the students are picking up trash along our MetroPark’s Freedom Trail, and often in tandem with a fellow Tallmadge service organization. And finally, the students have developed an out-reach international project in which they are planning to supply basic hygiene and health supplies to an orphanage in Cameroon, Africa. The students videoconferenced with a professor at a university in Cameroon and designed the project from scratch. Overall, the hope for our Kiwanis Builder’s Club is to expose our students to the community around them, filled with leadership opportunities, new educational ideas and cultural experiences. Our goal in connecting them to these hands-on activities is to help them realize they can make difference in their community, in people’s lives, and in their own. IIIeducation Welcome to Tallmadge. The Tallmadge City School District proudly serves the Tallmadge Community by providing an excellent ducation to our children and growth opportunities for adults. Four school buildings serve nearly 2500 students: Dunbar Primary School (K-2), Munroe Elementary (3-5), Tallmadge Middle School (6-8), and Tallmadge High School (9-12). Thanks to community support, a 3-4 year construction project has begun to build a new K-5 school and a middle school to replace our existing K-8 buildings. Tallmadge Schools are highly competitive with the high school ranking in the top ten percent of schools in Ohio. The schools provide opportunities to succeed both in and outside the classroom through extracurricular programs like robotics, music, art, drama, community service, and athletics. The great majority of our students attend college upon graduation. We also offer extensive vocational programs for students interested in trades or other noncollegiate paths. Please visit www. tallmadgeschools.org to learn more.
10
Registration for 2017-18 Kindergarten students will be held at Dunbar Primary School on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at both 1:30pm and 6pm. Please visit www.tallmadgeschools.org > NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION> KINDERGARTEN to learn more. For your convenience and to save you time, much of the documentation can be completed online prior to your visit. For a student to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten they must have a birthday on or before August 1st. Enrollment for all students, grades K - 12 will be held throughout the summer. Most of the registration process can be completed online. Parent/guardian will need to provide additional documentation in person to the district registrar. Please bring these documents to the McCombs Education Center, 486 East Ave, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 8:00 a. m. - 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. If you need a different time, please call Amanda Cardoni, Registrar, at 330633-3291 ext. 6111 to schedule an appointment.

Q&A PTA WITH THE
BY III Connie McNeal, President Tallmadge Council pf PTAs
What is the pta?
The PTA is a parent teacher association and is the largest and oldest (established in 1901) volunteer organization working exclusively on behalf of children and youth.
How is the PTA organized? The PTA is a self governing local unit(s) of the National PTA. Tallmadge has four units, one at each school in the district. Dunbar(K2), Munroe(35), Tallmadge Middle School(68),and Tallmadge High School(912). They are coordinated by a Council of PTA’s that was formed in the mid 1990’s.
How does the PTA support educational goals for teachers and students? There is a long history with the PTA and our schools in Tallmadge. The PTA partners with the schools by watching, learning, and sharing ideas. We bring school and community together. However we do fundraise to bring programs and even scholarships to the schools.
Who can join the PTA? The PTA mission statement says it best, any person wishing to “ be a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities and a strong advocate for the education and well being of every child” can join and should join the PTA. For further information, please contact your child’s school or e-mail csmcneal3@aol.com.

Tallmadge foundation What’s it all about? BY III Helene Hussing In the year 2000, 24 concerned Tallmadge citizens recognized a need and established the Tallmadge Foundation for the purpose of fostering, enhancing and supporting educational, cultural and recreational enrichment for the community of Tallmadge. Their vision in this foundation would provide a vehicle to fund programs and projects where initiatives would come from community-based civic organizations, the local schools, local government and even individuals. These initiatives would include learning opportunities, cultural programs, development seminars, workshops and skill development. Why is the Tallmadge Foundation so important? In a city like Tallmadge, having a foundation is a gift in itself. First, the foundation offers avenues of funding through grants and partnering with organizations and individuals in the community. Since planting the “acorn” more than a decade ago, the Tallmadge Foundation has channeled more than $400,000 back into the community. Activities have included innovative projects/programs to enrich learning, education and recreation. Just this past year, the foundation has funded two grants that funded VR viewers for our local high school and middle school. Students are traveling globally in a virtual setting and being exposed to various cultures throughout the world. The foundation also funded Life Book program for
14
sixth-grade middle school students, where students traveled to a local nursing home. There they would interview the residents and ask them about their life. Then the students will collect the data and turn it into a book. The book was then presented to the nursing home as a gift. The foundation has also funded Robotics Kits for many of the local robotics clubs to use in their competitions. Many other projects and programs have been funded through grants. Grant Applications run on a quarterly cycle with due dates on January 15, April 15, July 15 and October 15. The application is available for download on the foundation’s website www.tallmadge-foundation.org. T h e Ta l l m a d g e Foundation has also hosted cultural events and fine arts projects/ programs. Two outstanding events were concerts of a different genre. In May 2011, the foundation was honored to bring a highly praised Italian Tenor to the area. Salvatore Randazzo performed a variety of pop and classical music. Then in August 2014, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver held a blue-grass concert also hosted by the foundation. The Tallmadge Foundation has also been a conduit for scholarships to graduating Tallmadge Seniors. Over 60 students have received generous scholarships by gen“Foundation” CONTINUED on PG. 16

erous individuals who value the future that lies in our Tallmadge children. Where does the Tallmadge Foundation get the funds to be so generous? Community foundations, such as the Tallmadge Foundation, are tax-exempt charities organized as collections of individual funds. Unique among charitable organizations, community foundations are experts in both sides of the philanthropic exchange, providing premium service to individual funds and developing deep knowledge of local community needs. The Tallmadge Foundation provides a simple, convenient and flexible way to make positive differences for future generations. The foundation allows individuals and families to es-
tablish customized charitable funds without the burden of tax liabilities and administrative tasks associated with setting up a private foundation. This group oversees and is committed to honoring the wishes of each donor. As a 501(c)3 organization, donations made to the Tallmadge Foundation are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. It allows individuals to take immediate deductions for contributions made and avoid capital gains taxes. Learn more about the foundation on www.tallmadgefoundation.org. Tallmadge Lions Club Serving Tallmadge Since 1938
The Tallmadge Lions Club has quietly been serving its community since 1938, the oldest service club in the City of Tallmadge. Lions Clubs International (LCI) is the largest volunteer service agency in the world with clubs in over 200 countries with over 1.4 million members. Worthy causes that Lions support are limitless and new endeavors are found every year. In 2016, with the help of area clubs, the Tallmadge Lions conducted vision screenings on over 4,000 area children, many of whom were referred to an eye doctor. The club supports Lions eye clinics in both Akron and Cleveland, helping provide eye exams and glasses to those in need. It has also purchased pilot dogs for visually impaired residents in the area. However, Lions are about much more than just vision. Recently the club has supported the Salvation Army, Tallmadge Good Neighbors, Faithful Servants, Ronald McDonald House of Akron, and the Tallmadge Fire Department to name a few. Advocates for educations, the Tallmadge Lions annually give a college scholarship to a Tallmadge High School graduate. A high school student of the month is honored throughout the academic year at club meetings. Since 2014, the club has collected over 1,000 pounds of food at its meetings for the local Dare to Share program.
18
This past fall, the Tallmadge Lions sponsored the startup of the Lakemore Lions, who with 25 members, are already making a big difference in their community. “CLUB CONTINUED on PG. 20

Since opening 9 years ago
the locally owned Beef ‘O’ Brady’s ‘Family Sports Pub located in the Cascades Plaza in Brimfield has lived up to its motto of “Good Food, Good Sports”. In addition great wings and fresh Angus burgers Beef’s has significantly expanded its menu to include char grilled steaks, salmon, and pork chops as well as lighter items like our lettuce wraps, quinoa power salad and our new Mediterranean Salad. Along with an extensive kids menu over 80% of our menu is priced under $10. All items are available for carry out and we feature a catering menu for large gatherings at our place or yours. From the beginning Beef’s has strived to be community oriented sponsoring numerous youth athletic teams and working with the local schools to
support both educational and athletic programs. By far our greatest contribution has been through sponsoring “Spirit Nights”. The concept is simple: The organization or non-profit chooses the date, we print up to 300 flyers for distribution to their patrons who then bring in the flyer on the designated date. Beef’s then collects the flyers and rebates up to 20% of the proceeds, excluding alcohol, back to the organization. To date over $25,000 has been donated back to the community. Over 20 large HD flat screens featuring five new 65” in the bar area provide great viewing for your favorite athletic team. It was great cheering the CAVS to the NBA championship and we look forward to the Indians playoff run this fall. The NFL Sunday ticket and our two separate rooms allow all fans to see their favorite college and NFL teams in the fall while enjoying the best wings in town and a large selection of domestic and craft beers.
We even reserve a room for those that follow that team from western PA. A popular feature at Beef’s is the two separate rooms which can be reserved free of charge for larger dining groups. The smaller “Henry’s Clubhouse” named after the owner’s grandson, seats 14-16 and the larger Party Room seats 40. Beef’s has hosted a number of birthday and anniversary parties as well as many wedding rehearsal dinners. The rooms are also popular for lunch time business meetings. With our large parking area Beef’s can also accommodate a number of special events ranging from the weekly cruise-ins from May-September to hosting Harley Davidson bike rides to one day special events like the Mustang & Corvette auto clubs. So whether it’s a quick meal before a Friday night HS football game or you’re settling in for a full afternoon with the Browns, we hope to see you at Beef’s.

Honoring the Brave
Tallmadge residents have a strong history, and current presence, in the Armed Forces. From active duty members to our honored veterans, Tallmadge residents represent America at home and across the world. Many Tallmadge organizations, including schools, churches and businesses, make special efforts to recognize the men and women who serve. It is a shared tradition to honor veterans across Tallmadge with memorials throughout the year; especially on Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Good Neighbors
A History of...
BY III Candy Lorkowski
Good Neighbors, Inc. is a non-profit, 501©(3), charitable organization providing food, clothing and household items to people in need. There are seven units in Summit County, with over 300 volunteers. The Tallmadge unit was established in 1966 through the auspices of the Tallmadge Social Action Council, which was composed of two members from five of the Tallmadge churches. The first unit was housed at 31 Wright Road. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kovalcik and Mrs. Robert Schroyer were the first chairmen. In 1968, the unit outgrew these facilities (2 rooms) and moved to 855 Southeast Ave. In 1969, Mrs. Lou
Meyers became chairman and served for two years, followed by Mrs. John Kline, who served 1 year. Mrs. F Fox served at least 2 years as chairman. At some point, Marji McCaulley became chairman. Then in 1989, Candy Lorkowski became chairman and is the current chairman. (Candy also served 14 years as Council President of Good Neighbors Inc.) The unit moved from 855 Southeast to N. Munroe Road (in the Baptist Church) in 1989, to Osceola (in the SACS building) to West Avenue, to our present location at 74 Community Road, in 1999. The unit rents our space from the City of Tallmadge, which is our best location yet and is the largest we’ve ever had. It is also most centrally located. Today the unit has representatives from 4 churches who staff the unit, which is open Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The four churches are First Congregational Church, Our

Lady of Victory, St. Mark Lutheran, and Tallmadge United Methodist Church. These four churches also support our unit on a regular basis. Our volunteers are: Jo Berry, who started volunteering for Tallmadge Good Neighbors in 1970; JoAnna Meeker, who began in 1977 with Lew Meeker joining her in 1985; Candy and Tom Lorkowski, who began in 1984; Gerry Merk, who began in 1995; Colleen Martin and Dolores Wilmoth, who both began in 2002; and Sandy Zickafoose, who began in 2008. These along with several who help with our holiday distribution and of course all the folks who generously support us throughout the year, allow us to serve the needs of our community. The year 2013 holds the record for the highest number of people served with 2894 individuals helped with
food and 1392 helped with clothing. The 2015 numbers were lower and included 1978 individuals helped with food and 1235 with clothing. The estimated totals for 2016 are 1840 individuals for food, and 1071 helped with clothing. During the period from May 1989 to December 2015 our volunteers donated 69,241.75 hours. In December 2014, Good Neighbors of Tallmadge won the Bishop Anthony Pilla Leadership Award from The Catholic Commission Summit County. We feel that God has Blessed us with such a caring community and we feel privileged to be allowed to do His work. From May of 1989 to December of 2015 our unit has served 40,532 individuals with food and 21,028 with clothing. We can only do our work with your support and we thank you very much for being there for those in need.

All About
Faithful Servants Care Center Dr. Tom Myers, Dermatologist helping a patient.
Interested in some good news about healthcare? Healthcare seems to be dominating the news presently, but in Tallmadge, Ohio there has been “Good News” about healthcare for low-income and at-risk populations for five years! F a i t h f u l S e r va n t s Care Center, founded five years ago by Drs. Sue and Mark Meyer with the help of their mentor Dr. David Hoff, has been providing free urgent-care services to those without insurance or the economic means to access traditional health care. Incredible medical professionals and volunteers without a medical background staff the free-clinic, open Sunday through Friday from 5:30-9:00 p.m. Drs. Mark and Sue Meyer, after serving with shortterm medical missions teams overseas, felt a deep

calling to the needs in their own community. Faithful Servants Care Center was founded five years ago in Tallmadge and has grown in size, location, and impact. Faithful Servants was able to obtain a mobile van that has opened doors to bring free medical care to other areas of Summit County. Currently Faithful Servants operates three sites where doctors, nurses and lay-volunteers visit weekly to bring care to neighborhoods with high medical needs and low access. Each week, Faithful Servants provides care at the Haven of Rest, South Street Ministries’ Front Porch facility, and Urban Vision in the North Hill neighborhood. Faithful Servants hopes to continue to expand these ministries! Perhaps one reason for the remarkable growth over such a short time is the organization’s foundation of faith. A guiding passage for the leadership at Faithful Servants is Matthew 25: 34-36 -- “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I

was in prison and you came to visit me.’ For the doctors, nurses and volunteers at Faithful Servants, the passion to care for patients is an overflow of the love of Christ and a desire to be his hands and feet.. When patients walk through the door of the Tallmadge clinic or mobile sites, they are greeted with a smile, warmth and genuine compassion. Volunteers are committed to caring for patients in a way that expresses love and dignity. Faithful Servants has the incredible gift to provide a physical need of medical care to patients who may have no other options, to provide medi-

cine to those who are faced with the choice of paying for medication or paying rent, and to provide encouragement to all who walk through the doors on a day where they are not feeling their best.
Faithful Servants welcomes new volunteers, patients, donors and/or assistance in spreading the ‘good news’ about health and wholeness in the community!
