home as my mother prepared for the holiday. Often, we were headed to an extended family gathering and she would prepare a dish, or several to take along. The sight of the pumpkin pies we would have at Thanksgiving every year, or the mashed potatoes, were nearly more than one could bear without sneaking a bite or two, or more! She would shoo us out of the kitchen and tell us that we had to wait for the meal and the day that

whether one is Amish or English. In the Amish world, of special importance are the holidays that focus on family and faith. Christmas is celebrated because of the birth of Christ. Good Friday and other traditional Christian holidays are also special. My earliest memories as a little Amish boy were of the smells that extended from the kitchen of our

This small window into my own memory of holidays past, reflects the importance of three things in the Amish world; faith, family, and the farm. was coming. As we gathered at Grandpa and Grandma’s house with the cousins and uncles and aunts, of whom I had many, the food would be finished and served. Turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a vegetable, and always noodles. Then on to the table laden with desserts. Ahh the pies, and the cakes, pudding, and much more. We would visit and play until someone called us together for lunch. Grandpa, with his shining, bald head would say in Dutch, “if we are all here, lets bow our heads in prayer.” And for a moment silence would reign. In that moment, in our hearts, whether we could articulate it or not, gratefulness assailed our senses. Then we would eat. Since there
were twelve children and about thirty grandchildren we would file through the line. In the traditional Amish way, the eldest male would go first, and we would continue to file through by age. In this way age and wisdom were honored and we all learned deferred enjoyment as we waited our turn. But then load our plates we did! The creamy potatoes covered with rich gravy, the succulent turkey, and the rich desserts made the wait worthwhile. Then after the meal we would play until chore time, then the cows were milked, horses fed, and of we went to the house for another round at the same food again. As we traveled home in the dark, starlit evening a feeling of contentment was marrow deep in the little boy, now sleepy in
the back of the buggy. This small window into my own memory of family holidays past, reflects the importance of three things in the Amish world; faith, family, and the farm. In that gathering were elements of faith as we bowed our heads in silent prayer and gratefulness for the meal, both before we ate and after we ate. In that moment we followed hundreds of years of tradition as we followed the path of faith in expressing gratefulness to God for not only the food, but also the heritage of faith that God has called our people to. In addition to faith, is the importance of family in our world. The Amish world always involves family and we make decisions based on how it will affect our family life. When we gathered around the table in the old farmhouse that my Grandparents lived in, we were celebrating family. People in this
community often ask who your parents are, and make familial connections that extend back three generations. Nearly everyone is connected to many others in the community. This is important, and in essence has kept our community connected in a world that is often global and disconnected. The third factor is our deep appreciation for the farms, lands, and soil of our world. Holidays like Thanksgiving celebrated the glories of harvest and the rich bounty of the soil. Meat from the larder and vegetables from the garden were harvested, stored, and would keep the family fed over the winter. For that reason, every holiday we gather, now with my own family, to celebrate the gifts of faith, family and the richness of the farm with those we love.

–THE CHRISTMAS STORY– MATTHEW 1:18-2:12 | King James Version (KJV)
N
ow the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the
angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

IN MID DECEMBER OF 1967 my fifth grade teacher Mrs. Cirullo’s class included a thin, pale student named Pamela. Most of my fellow students avoided interacting with her. They thought Pamela was strange for wearing the same yellow and red flowered dress to class nearly every day and often, to my dismay, told her so. I still remember the anxiousness and trepidation in her pretty light blue eyes which seemed to be holding onto a secret she felt the need to tell. Sitting next to me during recess, Pamela explained in the softest voice that her family financial problems would mean no gifts for anyone in her six member household this Christmas. She and her older siblings had decided they could accept this fate for themselves, but couldn’t their four year old brother Joey have an inexpensive toy perhaps? Sadly she revealed to me, both parents had silently

nodded no. While wringing her small hands together she confided in me her fear that Joey, excited and filled with the joyful spirit of holiday anticipation, was just too young to understand the concept of being ‘too poor for Christmas’. Our eyes met shortly before the dreaded recess bell rang out its loud call to return to lessons. Reaching for her left hand, I gave her fragile fingers a light squeeze in a last ditch effort on my part to render her some kind of sense of comfort or hope. “I may have something at home I could bring in for Joey” I said, with a lilt of encouragement, adding “it wouldn’t be brand new, but it would be something.” Then we quickly walked back to class. Pamela blinked her now sparkling eyes at me and mouthed, so no one else could hear, “Could you?” as we returned to our respective seats. Smiling back at her, my head nodded yes while I tried to 2017
“I may have something at home I could bring in for Joey...it wouldn’t be brand new, but it would be something.” think of what I could give her. Being somewhat of a tomboy, I had often enjoyed playing with race car tracks and train sets. I thought that I must have some kind of small toy left that would solve my friend’s dilemma. After arriving home from class, I began to assemble an assortment of old forgotten toys. I picked up a plastic car hauler truck with four colorful cars in blue, green, yellow and red. It would have to do, I thought, as I could find nothing else suitable for a four year old little boy. Since I had sought approval for my plan from my mother, she suggested we include a diminishing roll of holiday wrap along with half a roll of scotch tape. “Perhaps,” she wisely advised, “the family may not have enough money
for these items as well.” This made perfect sense to me so we included them in a paper grocery bag along with the toy. I felt the confidence of a mission accomplished, with my mother playing the role of supportive co-conspirator. That evening time seemed to creep along slowly, filling me with great anticipation. To think that I might have some small contribution to a child’s creative sense of wonder, along with fulfilling a loving sister’s only Christmas wish, made me smile. The secret Santa toy delivery would take place at the end of the following school day, the last day before Christmas break. Seeing pure joy on Pamela’s radiant face as I opened the brown paper bag to
show her the truck and cars taught me several lessons; that sometimes it’s the small gesture that means the most and that compassion and empathy can equal joy. I don’t remember what I received for Christmas that year in 1967 but I’ll never forget the ear to ear grin on Pamela’s face that first day back from school vacation when she whispered to me in our crowded elementary school hallway, “My mother cried and Joey loved the truck and car set!” She sweetly added, “He played with it all Christmas day and even took it to bed with him that night and every night since, thank you for the gift!” I cupped my hand to her ear and whispered back, “You’re welcome...
that makes me so happy too!” Since that fateful day that Pamela felt confident enough to share her only Christmas wish with me there have been many more gifts for others whenever I’m in a position to lighten another’s emotional burden or put a smile on a child’s face. Fifty years ago, as a child, I learned in Mrs. Cirullo’s class that it truly is better to give than to receive. Thanks Pam for the greatest gift of all. Ruth lives in a small cabin with her husband Ray and little dog Miko near Peoli in Northeast Guernsey County. She can be reached via email at ruthdickson@ymail.com

One such testament to the festive spirit of the holiday season is the many homes Horse Supplies & Family Footwear and businesses decorated with the lights and colors that have become synonymous with the season. Decorating for the holiday season can be time-consuming. While decking the halls may not consume as much time as holiday shopping and wrapping presents, according to data from a 2013 American Time Use Survey, interior and exterior decorating for the holidays may consume anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours per session. Holiday decorating includes things as simple as setting up a menorah or as complex as stringing lights on the exterior of a home. Holiday enthusiasts without much time to decorate can invest in a couple of holiday wreaths, which can be dressed up as much or as little as celebrants prefer. If you do not have the time to string lights on the house, wrap them around wreaths hung in windows or hang the wreaths on a home's main entrance. Celebrants who want to go a less traditional route can hang wreaths made of holly, citrus fruits, ribbons, or any other greenery instead of the more customary evergreen wreaths. DEC OR ATE WITH ORNAMENT S.
Ornaments are not exclusive to Christmas trees. Fill a container with metallic ornaments and place it in a prominent location, such as a busy hallway or the foyer of your home. Hang ornaments on clear filament from the mantle or within the main window of the house, where they can reflect tree lights and add sparkle. 2017

cookies, cakes and other treats. However, during the holiday rush, it's easy to get side-tracked or tired, and perhaps even a little bit overwhelmed by all the things to do in such a short period of time. Holiday baking doesn't have to add to seasonal stress. With these tips and shortcuts, there will be plenty of sweet treats for the family. Stick with tested recipes Although holiday bakers may

want to branch out a bit with their culinary creativity, recipes that have previously been prepared with great success can take some of the work out of holiday baking. Preparing recipes you recall preparing in the past is much easier than trying something new. If you'd like, add sparkle to old standards, such as decorating oatmeal or chocolate chip cookies with colored sprinkles. Cookies are fast-baking Did you know that cookies 2017
Culinary historians say that cookies were first made to test if an oven was hot enough to bake other goods...Sounds like a good excuse to make dessert. were originally made to test oven temperatures? Culinary historians say that cookies were first made to test if an oven was hot enough to bake other goods. Today, cookies can be whipped up in mere minutes. Make a batch of dough and then freeze or refrigerate it, thawing it when the time comes to bake. Also, think about baking one day and decorating the next if pressed for time. Embrace colored candy melts Icing can be tricky to master. Simply heating colored candy melts
and pouring over cakes or painting onto cookies can add festive appeal to desserts. Candy melts even come in many different colors and can be combined to achieve the tint desired. Keep ingredients in top form Don't let poorly performing ingredients or a lack of supplies be your undoing. Butter can be softened quickly in the microwave when needed for recipes. Eggs can be brought to room temperature by allowing them to sit in a bowl of warm water. Ensure that brown
sugar stays soft by putting a piece of sliced bread in the container. Don't forget to stock up on other baking staples, such as vanilla and almond extracts, baking powder/ soda, molasses, and confectioner's sugar. Don't bake from scratch Not all recipes need to be made from scratch. Boxed cake mixes can be embellished and turned into delicious desserts without much fuss. Substitute melted butter for oil, buttermilk for water, and add an extra egg for a rich cake.
Mix in chocolate chips or nuts or experiment with garnishes for a festive look. Parchment paper is key Line cookie sheets or cake pans with parchment paper for easy dessert release and quick cleanup. Parchment paper and even foil can help lift cakes or cookie bars out of pans so they look neat and do not stick. Holiday baking can be made much easier when you employ a few of these tricks of the trade.

spent enjoying family are the most important aspects of celebrating Christmas in an Amish home. There is no twinkling and flashing of lights, no music blaring and floors littered with wrapping paper. Instead the Amish avoid the extravagance of the season and focus on Christ. This is a time for reflection and remembering as families gather together and read from the Bible.
Traditionally there are candles that light each window in the Amish home to represent Christ's birth. You may even see greenery and garlands adorning their household, but overall the decorations are kept very simple. The story of the first Christmas is shared on Christmas day and chores and household duties are then carried on with as usual. This is not a day off from the work that must be done. Many of the toys children receive are handmade and books and dolls are also very popular. Every Amish community is different, and while their traditions will vary, the overall message is that Christmas is meant to be centered on Christ. Amish children are taught this from the very beginning and their school programs and songs also reflect this in the celebrations and programs that they put on during the holiday season. Non-Amish friends and family members are sometimes invited to an Amish Christmas. Often the family meal is a time for visitors to join in. The Amish also believe strongly
preparing the Christmas dinner. The different dishes often include roast chicken, potatoes with gravy, fruit and breads, cookies and pies as well as homemade candies. The gatherings can go for days or even weeks at a time. If there is a large family and they are hosting visitors that have traveled from out of state it makes sense to keep the visit going longer in order to really get the most out of their holiday time.

surrounded by the adoring gaze of his parents and the shepherds. This birth was a miracle birth like no other. It truly is something that we want to appreciate and remember. However, I feel the need to be reminded that
Jesus had a purpose to be born like this. He had a mission that needed to be fulfilled. As we read on in Luke 2:41, we see that Jesus did not stay a baby. He grew up and became a young man.
At the age of 12 years old he went with his parents to celebrate the feast of the Passover. Jesus was found in the temple with the teachers and the scribes. He was deep in a discussion with them. They were amazed at his

questions and answers. As his mother approached him with a mild rebuke, he answered, “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” At this young age, Jesus already knew that he had a ministry to fulfill. However, it says that he went home with his parents and did all that they asked of him. The next we read of Jesus was when he was about 30 years old and began his ministry. Many of us also celebrate Easter as the epitome of our faith. This is a good thing to remember and honor. We need to remember though, what happened between Jesus’ birth and crucifixion are very important to complete our faith in God. He spent His last 3 years dedicated to the people of the world. It was filled with ministry, service, compassion, healing, teaching, and yes, some rebuking and reprimanding. We need to look beyond the birth and the grave to fully grasp the scope of Jesus’ life on Earth. We need to allow Him to speak to us on a daily
basis. He is asking for our devotion in our daily work and life. He is asking for more than a verbal acknowledgment that He was born and died. He asks that we give our all. Following are a few brief encounters that show the humanity of Jesus and also what he desires of us. Time and space do not allow us to delve into full detail, but these passages are a challenge that remind me to daily reach out to God for sustenance. In Matthew 14: 13-33 Jesus was seeking solitude with God. He was wanting to process the grief of John the Baptist’s death. Jesus was seeking a desert place away from the people to pray, meditate and commune with God, his father. We can see that even Jesus, in His divinity, needed time alone with God. Are we willing to give up time from our daily life to truly be alone with no one and nothing but God and let Him minister to our hearts? Are we willing to give up our earthly pursuits to listen to what God has to say? Are we willing to open our

boy was prepared for the needs of the journey. This lad must have had a mother that was gifted with foresight. She had spent the time and effort to equip her son with provisions for the trip ahead. Do we equip our children with the knowledge and the understanding that they are prepared to face whatever lies ahead for them? Although this vast crowd was illprepared for their journey, God was able to provide in their weakness. This lad was willing to give of what little he had and Jesus was able to multiply it and satisfy the needs of this massive group of people and still have abundance left besides. We need to take this as a lesson in life. We need to equip ourselves with the Spirit of God. We need to “study to shrew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” We need to cast these at
Jesus’ feet and he will multiply our faith to sustain us with abundance. This meager offering of ourselves, when given to God, can bless the lives of many. This lad’s offering blessed, probably 10,000-15,000 people. Are we willing to offer ourselves at the feet of Jesus? The second part of this passage records another powerful lesson. Jesus’ daily companions were out in a boat while Jesus was praying. A mighty storm arose and the waves began to roll. I imagine a small dinghy of a boat being rocked upon the boisterous sea. The disciples feared for their lives. Suddenly they spy a shadowy figure approaching them. But wait, this figure is walking on the water. Fear struck their hearts as they saw it approach. They might have shivered in fear as they said among themselves, “It is a spirit!” In our words we would say a ghost. We look at these men and marvel

Jesus is saying that despite the storms of life, “Do not be afraid. I am with you. I will be there in your time of trial. Trust me and know me.” at their unbelief. How could they not recognize the man that they were with daily? Let’s ask ourselves a question; we have the Word of God with us. We have freedom to teach the Word as we feel is right. However, do we truly recognize Jesus as our Lord and Master or is he merely someone that we talk about on Sunday or commune with during special times of trial? Would we recognize him for who He is should he approach us in a stormy time in our life? Jesus read their thoughts and said, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” Jesus is saying that despite the storms of life, “Do not be afraid. I am with you. I will be there in your time of trial. Trust me and know me.” To do this we need to know Jesus during the calm times in life. He needs to be a part of our everyday life. We will not recognize Him if we only see Him occasionally. Impetuous Peter was still doubtful. Full of nerve, he called out, “Lord if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.”
Jesus said, “Come.” If Jesus bids us come, what is our response? Peter’s was obedience. Though the summons seemed impossible, Peter moved. He stepped out on the water in faith and started off to meet Jesus. All of a sudden Peter saw the mighty waves swelling and quaked within. His faith failed him. His human reasoning took control. He was afraid. At that moment Peter started sinking. Do waves of despair envelope us as we step out to meet Jesus? Do we doubt that Jesus can truly see us through to the end? How do we respond when the way seems impossible and we cry, “Lord, we have been ing you and all seems to go wrong. Where are you?” Thankfully, the passage ends on a positive note! Peter called out in desperation, “Lord save me!” Jesus was there and reached out with a hand. He pulled Peter to His side and saved him from sure destruction. Jesus mildly rebuked Peter and the disciples, “Oh thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” This is how Jesus sees our struggles.

Why do we doubt when we know that God is there and is mightier than all the foes that assail us? The sea was calm and the boat settled down. Now the disciples could say, “Of a truth, thou art the Son of God.” Are we willing to call out and let Jesus help us or would we rather flounder away on our own? Peter was a fisherman, probably an expert swimmer. Suppose he would have struck out on his own. If he was wearing the robe that was customary of the day, it would have wrapped around his legs and become a dead weight. Are we willing to give up our own merits and reach out to the Hand of God for sustenance and deliverance? We need to cast our own carefully built security away as we reach out to God for support. What is the security that we tightly cling to? Can we let go of it and reach for God? We cannot cling tightly to our own accomplishments and also to God. If our hands are open and reaching out to Jesus, we can have nothing in
them to cling to. Peter had to let go of all else and grasp the saving power of Jesus. M AT T H E W 1 6 : 1 3 - 1 7
“When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Phillipi, he asked his disciples saying, Whom say men that I the Son of man am? And they said, “Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.” He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Jesus is asking everyone of us who we say that He is. We all need to make a confession. We can not say that the
minister says you are this, my parents say you are that, or my friends say something else. We all need to confess personally that He is our help in time of need. We need to confess that He is the Son of the Living God. Our Lord and Saviour. We are not saved by any other means than through the Blood of Jesus Christ. No accomplishments of our own merits will be sufficient. We need to cast all these down and cling to the hand of Jesus. As we celebrate Christmas this year, I challenge ourselves to keep focus on the whole purpose of this birth. It was so that we might have a life of abundance through the forgiveness of our sin’s. God has no grandchildren. We are either a child of His or a child of Satan. Usually I share a bit of our daily life and how that ties in with our spiritual life. I decided to share a personal study of our faith and walk with God
