TREASURES From the magnificent Civic Theatre in downtown Akron, to the music and entertainment at the Hard Rock Rocksino, to the beauty of the expansive Metro Parks system, Summit County has a lot to offers both its residents and its welcome visitors. HERE ARE JUST 10 OF THE MANY ATTRACTIONS THAT CAN BE ENJOYED IN THE COUNTY. BLOSSOM MUSIC CENTER 1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls 330-920-8040 http://www.livenationvenue. com/blossom-music-center Whether a little bit country, a whole lot rock 'n' roll or a soulful mixture of rhythm, folk, rap and blues, this outdoor venue in Northern Summit County is a place to satisfy every musical taste. Some of the biggest acts in musical history have rocked the amphitheater's stage since it opened in 1969 as summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Blossom has a total capacity of about 23,000 with a mixture of pavilion and lawn seating. All center events are rain or shine, which can lead to a beautiful summer evening under the stars or a throwback Woodstock-type mud romp. Handicap parking is available on site as well as a variety of parking options for purchase. And while picnic tables are located along the path from the main gate for guests who would like to grab a bite before the event, tailgating in parking lots is not permitted and grills, tents and open containers are prohibited. Other prohibited items include animals, except those used for assistance by GoodTimesOhio.com
individuals with disabilities, inline skates, skateboards, bicycles or action sports equipment. Weapons are a no no as well as laser pointers, drones, selfie sticks, fireworks, large signs, posters flags or markers. Folks wanting to video tape the event will be disappointed because video cameras are not allowed. Audio recorder and any type of ipad or tablet is also on the naughty list. Visitors should consider alternative routes to Blossom Music Center due to road construction and area slowdowns.The venue is easily accessible from all parts of Ohio. Check the website for specific routes. Unlike local bars and clubs, once a patron leaves he or she will not be permitted back into the venue. And while tailgating and open containers are not permitted, Blossom allows blankets, chairs that sit no higher that 9 inches above the ground and collapsable strollers. For those who want a chair they are available to rent for $5. Other items given a thumbs up are compact umbrellas, small purses, which will be searched, small cameras without a detachable lens, cellphones, small binoculars, non-aerosol sunscreen and insect repellent. Munchies can be brought into the venue as long as they fit into a 1-gallon clear zipper
top bag. No hard or soft sided coolers of any kind will be allowed.Clear bottles of factory sealed water, up to 20 ounces will be allowed, however frozen water bottles, glass bottles and aluminum cans are not permitted. Lions, bears, pandas, penguins, wolves and snakes galore await visitors right smack dab in the heart of Akron at the Akron Zoo. After entering the zoo's Welcome Center at the corner of Edgewood and Euclid Avenues, visitors are ushered through a wildlife kingdom of animals, reptiles, birds and fish. As visitors will learn, the zoo does not just display animals. it is also at the forefront of education and conservation efforts which are helping the zoo residents and their animal family members across the world. The remarkable architecture stands out among the many theaters in the Akron area. Local and nationally known musical acts and comedians frequent the theater, and movies are shown as well. The theater was built by Marcus Loew and designed by famed theater architect John Eberson. The interior structure was fashioned after a Moorish

STAN HYWET HALL & GARDENS 714 N Portage Path, Akron 330-836-5533 http://www.stanhywet.org/ One of the most well-known and beloved spots in the county, this beautiful estate was built approximately a century ago and attracts locals and nonlocals to its many events and countless tours each year. Stan Hywet Hall was built for F.A. Seiberling and his family. In 1898, Seiberling co-founded The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, naming it after Charles Goodyear, the inventor of the vulcanization process for rubber. Guests have many options to take both guided and self-guided tours, and can explore the many landmark attractions within this landmark including The Manor House, the Carriage House, the Corbin Obeservatory and The Carriage House. “We invite guests to visit and take a tour to learn more about the many ways the Seiberlings' legacy still influences our community today,” Linda 6

Conrad, President & Executive Director at Stan Hywet, said in a recent news release. Opening in mid-April on the lower level of the Manor House is THE SEIBERLING LEGACY, a new permanent exhibit that presents a complete picture of the Seiberlings' civic generosity. A visual story told in eight “chapters,” the display presents the many ways the family used its fortune and influence for the betterment of others. Each chapter -- Community Spirit, Business & Innovation, Transportation, Health & Wellness, the Environment, Culture, Military Service and Housing -- addresses another aspect of this family's altruism. “Nooks & Crannies,” the behind-the-scenes Manor House specialty tour, has been retooled with a new tour route and augmented with more details incorporated from additional research on the domestic staff who lived and worked on the estate. New exhibit panels and Walk the Hall guides are part of the refreshed tour. The lifecycle and impact of bees and other pollinator insects are part of the new Pollinator Garden. Designed to educated guests about the need for pollination plants and the challenges facing these essential insects, it is located between the Butterfly Habitat and the Corbin Conservatory. Other popular events throughout the years include Founder's Day Weekend June 9-11, 2017, an Easter Egg Hunt, the Father's Day Car Show, a summer Gala event, Ohio Mart, Deck the Hall, and plant sales. Live entertainment is offered too - murder mysteries are presented indoors periodically, and Stan Hywet is the summer home of the Ohio Shakespeare Festival which performs productions in the outdoor lagoon area. Stan Hywet is Akron’s first and largest National Historic Landmark, and is also the nation’s 6th largest historic home open to the public. It is an accredited museum of the American Alliance of Museums, one of only 26 in Ohio and one of only 802 in all of the United States. The Estate includes five 2017

historic buildings and eight historic gardens on 70 acres. Stan Hywet was named the #1 Historic Home Tour in America by readers of USA Today. At that time it was located in two borrowed rooms in the basement of the public library. Over the subsequent decades its location and mission changed but it always
remained a staple of local arts. The name Akron Art Museum was adopted as recently as 1980, emphasizing the importance of collecting as part of the organization's mission. The next year the museum moved to a renovated historic downtown Akron structure, the 1899 old post office building, which it still occupies. The museum offers many events and programs, of a great variety of different types. There are classes for children, guest talks presented by artists, Family Film nights and concerts, poetry readings, Yoga classes and more. For the past 10 years the museum has presented the Annual Art & Ale event, which features locally crafted brews from Ohio’s best brewmakers, complemented by some of the region’s favorite local food. Its nationally recognized collection was documented through the publication of collection catalogues. In 2007, the museum opened the James L. and John S. Knight Building, and in 2015 a new outdoor space, the Bud and

castle featuring Mediterranean decor, including medieval carvings, authentic European antiques and Italian alabaster sculptures. Among facilities of its size, the Civic is one of only five remaining atmospheric theaters in the country where patrons experience a twinkling star-lit sky and intermittent clouds moving across the horizon, all while sitting inside the auditorium. The theatre closed briefly in 2001-2002 and underwent an extensive restoration and expansion. The facility was brought up to modern performance and patron standards, and its failing 70-year old infrastructure was restored. The Civic began a partnership with the City of Akron in 2003 to program and operate Lock 3 Live! a new outdoor performance venue featuring more than 80 events and attractions scheduled between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Founded in 1921, Summit Metro Parks is the second oldest park district in Ohio. The parks include 14,300 acres, including 16 parks, several conservation areas and more than 125 miles of trails, with 22.4 miles of the multipurpose Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Annual attendance for the park district averages 5 million visits. The parks' Bike and Hike paths are very popular, both
for walking and riding. Some additions to the Metro Parks in the past two decades include Overlook in Cascade Valley, Liberty Park in Twinsburg, Springfield Bog Metro Park in Springfield Township and the Tallmadge Meadows Area in Munroe Falls. Other parks in the system include Freedom Trail, Towpath Trail, Cascade Valley, Deep Lock Quarry, Firestone, Gorge, Hampton Hills, Sand Run, Silver Creek, O'Neill Woods and the F.A. summitmetroparks.org CANAL PARK 300 S Main St, Akron 330-253-5151 http://www.milb.com/ One of the most notable and popular additions to the downtown Akron area in recent decades, Canal Park is the home of the Akron RubberDucks Minor League Baseball Team. The first game at Canal Park was played April 10, 1997, with more than 9,000 people in attendance. Canal Park features one of the largest free-standing video boards in the minor leagues, the largest in all of Double-A baseball. Canal Park's playing surface covers more than 100,000 square feet. The field is 100% Kentucky bluegrass. The home clubhouse spans more than 3,000 square feet on the third base side of the ballpark. Inside the RubberDucks clubhouse are two batting/pitching cages,
a weight/workout facility, trainer's room, manager's office, coaches' office, player's lounge and lockers. The visitor's clubhouse also features a trainer's room, manager's office, coaches' office and player lockers. Special events at the stadium include the well-attended movie nights. An HD video board was added in 2013, and movie fans can watch a favorite movie from the field or the stadium under the stars. Recent films have included Frozen and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The John S. Knight Center's 1994 opening was a centerpiece of the revitalization of the city of Akron, and this meeting venue has been welcoming convention planners, tradeshow exhibitors and event attendees to the heart of downtown ever since. Inn at Brandywine Falls, a bed and breakfast run by Katie and George Hoy. The Inn was a Greek Revival home built in 1848 by James Wallace and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The bed and breakfast has six rooms for guests and was renovated by the Hoys 27 years ago. George said the Inn and property belong to the people of the United States but they have a 50-year-lease on the property, which used to house a saw mill at the top of the falls and grist and woolen
mills as well. “The mill wheel and buildings are long gone, but part of the foundation is still there,” Hoy said. He said the Inn hosts more than 10,000 visitors each year, half of whom are repeat visitors. Information from Explore Nordonia Hills 2016

As part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Brandwine Falls is one of Nordonia Hills most beautiful attractions. Water cascades down a 65foot drop over layers of Berea
Sandstone, Bedford Shale and Cleveland Shale into Brandywine Creek, creating the beautiful waterfall that attracts people from all over. The shaded boardwalk leads down several levels of stairs to an overlook in the waterfall’s gorge. Hikers can go as low as creek level by following the 1.5 mile Brandywine Gorge Trail. According to the national park’s website, hikers can see vernal pools and enjoy views of the creek during their walk. The hiking trail starts near the

GREATER ALLIANCE CARNATION FESTIVAL Honoring Alliance as the Carnation City, the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival is a 10-day festival filled with parades, food and fun throughout the city. A princess tea party, a 5K run, and a movie at Silver Park will help kick off this year’s festival, scheduled for July 28-August 13, followed by an outdoor
three-day Rib Fest outside of the Carnation Mall. The Rib Fest is comprised of food vendors, a business expo, chalking, musical entertainment and more! The following Sunday, the Carnation Queen is crowned and her court is selected. Monday through Wednesday, there are numerous activities each day. Activities include pedal tractor pull, used book sale, ice cream socials and more! Carnation Days in the Park

begins on Wednesday and runs through Saturday and features food, craft displays and free live entertainment. A shuttle is available to take festival-goers from Alliance High School and other designated pick up sites to the park. PORTAGE COUNTY From the pristine beauty of its many parks and nature preserves to the abundance of history, there is plenty to see and do in Portage County. Here are just 10 of the attractions that visitors to the county can enjoy. NELSON-KENNEDY LEDGES STATE PARK 12440 S.R. 282, Nelson Township 330-637-2856 http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/ nelsonkennedyledges It may be small, but the 167-acre Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park in Northern Portage County is known for its trademark outcrop rock formations. The formations are among the few in northern Ohio still exposed to view. Most of the outcrops elsewhere have been covered with soil and rock
left by receding glaciers. A popular picnicking and hiking spot, the trails wander through formations such as Devil's Icebox, Indian Pass and Old Maid's Kitchen. The area was of vital importance to the Indian tribes, including Delaware, Shawnee, Miami, Seneca, Mohawk, and Cajuga, who were among those said to have lived at Nelson Ledges. The park lies near one of the highest points of the state and is close to the watershed divide between the Ohio River and Lake Erie. Several major

Historically used as a transportation route by Native Americans the trail is located along the historic Erie rail line, with a portion of it running alongside a still-active railroad operated by the Akron Barberton Cluster Railway. Portions of the trail travel along the Cuyahoga River, remnants of the P&O Canal, the historic Kent Railyards, Towner’s Woods, and Chestnut Hills Park. The trail can be enjoyed all year and is ideal for walking, running, cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding and cross country skiing. The asphalt trail features multiple trailheads and parking
areas, information kiosks, interpretive signs, and picnic tables. There are parking areas throughout Franklin Township and Ravenna. The Headwaters Trail is an eight-mile limestone-paved trail built on the former Cleveland-Mahoning Railroad line between Mantua and Garrettsville. It passes by beautiful farmland and forests, steep ravines and wetlands, including state nature preserves, and the Upper Cuyahoga State Scenic River. Portions of the Headwaters Trail have been designated as part of the Buckeye Trail system that circles the state. The trail is located along a railroad tyat operated as a passenger and freightline from Youngstown to Cleveland until the mid 1970s. The S.R. 700 trailhead is the site of the former Jeddoe Station, and historic stories of the railroad include a train robbery and great escape in Garrettsville, and a tragic boiler accident. 1. ASHLAND BALLOONFEST Ashland BalloonFest is perhaps the quintessential Ashland event, an event that makes Ashland, well, Ashland. BalloonFest is a time for community to celebrate summer at Freer Field as over 30 hot air balloons can launch right out of the field as people look up to the sky in wonder. This year will be the 27th edition of the festival. Each night of the festival, balloons circle up for the balloon glow, an occasion complete with music and pilots flaring their burners, illuminating the envelopes for a stunning visual as it lights the night sky. Pilots come from across the country to witness the festival. The 27th BalloonFest runs June 29 through July 1, 2017. 2. MOHICAN WINTERFEST If you don’t mind the cold, Mohican Winter Fest in Loudonville is a perfect opportunity to get outdoors during the winter. Most activities during the winter festival held on a threeday weekend each January

are free. Visitors can enjoy ice sculpture and carving competitions featuring awardwinning ice carvers Aaron Costic and his crew from Elegant Ice Creations. More than 20 ice carvings are displayed throughout downtown along Main Street and in Central Park, where most events take place. Demonstrations include speed carving and fire spinning. There also is a train expo with model train enthusiasts sharing their elaborate layouts and a winter hike starting at the nature center at Mohican State Park. With indoor and outdoor activities, there’s something for everyone. 3. BROOKSIDE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES Ashland Symphony Orchestra’s Fourth of July Pops in the Park concert might be the highlight of the summer season at Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell but the iconic venue in Brookside Park plays host to a variety of performances from mid-June to mid-August. Designed to accommodate
a 100-piece band, orchestra or choir on stage, the band shell was dedicated in June 1949. Concerts are scheduled every Thursday and Sunday evening during the summer with all performances open to the public with a suggested $2 donation per person. The summer schedule always features an array of musical styles including bluegrass, country, folk, rock, gospel and the blues. A performance by Ashland Regional Ballet and OPUS II Dance Studio always concludes the season in August. 4. ASHLAND CHAUTAUQUA Historical figures come to life every summer during Ashland Chautauqua at Brookside Park’s Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell. Ashland’s Chautauqua has been produced by a committee of volunteers for more than 15 years. Actors and scholars take on the role of historical figures in presenting their first-person portrayals during five separate nights each July with opening act musical performances leading off the show.

Each year, the characters fit under a particular theme. Some previous Chautauqua themes were the Wild West, Literary Legends, Adventurers and Explorers and Voices of Freedom. In addition to the performances on stage, the week includes daytime youth programs and adult lecture workshops. A companion reader lists the schedule of events, information about each historical character and the scholars portraying them. 5. GRANDPA’S CHEESEBARN Billboards along Interstate 71 tempt the taste buds and draw you to an Ashland culinary attraction. Grandpa’s Cheesebarn and Sweeties Chocolates is located at I-71’s U.S. 250 exit just east of town. Started in 1978, the Cheesebarn is the home of smoked meats, handmade chocolates, ice cream, Amish country jams, jellies and pickles, local honey and maple syrup, and, of course, some of the finest Ohio cheeses. A favorite of local residents

and travelers alike, the little barn with the familiar white silo also features something for everyone’s sweet tooth. Fudge, bars and bark, fruit and nuts and other sweet treats attract customers from near and farm. 6. CHARLES MILL AND PLEASANT HILL LAKE PARKS If fishing, camping, boating or just getting away from the noise of everyday life for a day, week or the whole summer are your thing, Charles Mill Lake Park and Pleasant Hill Lake Park offer it all. The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District parks are located just a few miles apart in Ashland and Richland counties. Charles Mill Lake Park, 1277A Ohio 430, covers 2,000 acres. The lake has a surface area of 1,350 acres, a maximum depth of 24 feet and 34 miles of shore line. The park also features two campgrounds with 457 campsites. Pleasant Hill Lake Park is located at 3431 Ohio 95 near Perrysville and features 850 acres of water in the 1,345-acre site. The park has 380 campsites, 20 primitive campsites for tent camping and 37 primitive campsites designed for campers with horses. Both parks also feature a schedule of special events throughout the summer. State licenses are required for boating, hunting and fishing.

7. ASHLAND COUNTY PARK DISTRICT The Ashland County Park District is made up of 16 parks across the county, each with its own unique characteristics. There’s Byers Woods, the 130acre park with four trails with various wetlands where 77 types of birds have been seen over the years, Freer Field, home of Ashland BalloonFest, Audubon Wetlands Preserve and Crall Woods, recently recognized as an old-growth forest, a rarity in the country. MOHICAN STATE PARK Mohican State Park, a 20-minute drive from the city of Ashland, is a 1,110 acre Ohio state park known for its scenic forestry, campgrounds and proximity to the Mohican River. Located in Loudonville, hikers can venture onto several walking trails, and venture onto the old Covered Bridge, climb the Mohican Fire Tower, explore the Lyons Falls and gaze upon the Pleasant Hill Dam. There are numerous types of campsites accessible at the park, including cabins, electric and non-electric campsites, and camper cabins. Nearby is 4,524 acre state forest, a beautiful backdrop with 32 miles of hiking trails.

Included within are a 5,000-square-foot showroom, filled with the one-of-a-kind handcrafted metal giftware for which Wendell August is famous. The gift shop includes more than 1,000 items, including a unique line of Amish and country designs and mementos, Christmas ornaments and plates, wedding gifts, baby gifts, military gifts, serving pieces,
home and desk accessories for all styles and tastes and jewelry. The story of the company’s beginning in 1923 is told in a museum area, which includes a guest theater and collectible giftware from the 1920s to the 1950s. A short video documents the company’s history and the effort put into handcrafting each piece. Visitors also can tour the workshop, in which they can inspect the tools of the trade. An interactive hand-hammering room provides an opportunity to be part of the action and create a unique treasure to take home. People can visit the cheese shop or buy online 24 hours a day at https://www.babyswiss. com. In 1947, Alfred Guggisberg ventured to the U.S. from Switzerland to pursue his cheesemaking dream. He created Baby Swiss cheese, now world famous. Known for smaller holes and lessbiting flavor, Baby Swiss is a true product of Ohio’s Amish Country. Guggisberg Swiss was voted best in America in 2015 out of 1892 entries from 28 states. Learn the history of cheesemaking during an educational and entertaining in-house factory tour of Heini’s Cheese Chalet (6005 County Road 77, Berlin; 330-893-2131). The Chalet features a sampling room where guests can try over 80 varieties of cheese made on location, a free cheese-making tour, handmade fudge, candy, bulk foods, and coffee shop. Heini’s is dedicated to the creation of quality, locally made cheese, founded on the traditional craft of authentic, artisan cheese since 1935.
With a wide array of canned goods and homegrown seasonal produce and a huge assortment of flowers, all of your senses will be on full alert with the colors, aromas and fresh tastes of the season. Then there is the farm store, featuring USA-made wooden toys, tack, bird seed, leather goods and more. Not often is a bakery a destination stop for travelers, but for those who have ventured to Amish Country and found their way to Hershberger’s Farm & Bakery, that experience alone is a reason to venture to Holmes County. uernsey County, nestled in the scenic rollings hills of southeast Ohio has it all. From gorgeous lakes, to festivals and farmer’s markets with plenty of places to dine and shop. The county is located at the crossroads of interstates 70 and 77 with the county seat of Cambridge as the forerunner. There are an abundance of tourist destinations within the county. It is in these rolling hills that the “crown jewel” of Ohio can be found. Just outside of Cambridge, in Lore City is Salt Fork State Park and Lodge. The park, located at 14755 Cadiz Road, offers 2,500 feet of beaches among 17,229 acres of recreational facilities. With two marinas you can take a boat out from one of their 450 rental docks and go fishing for things like large-mouth bass, blue gills and muskellunge. At Salt Fork you can also enjoy 14 miles of hiking trails, 19 miles of snowmobile trails, along with an array of snow related activities and 12 miles of bridal trails. If you are in the mood for a picnic stop at one of the two shelters near the 400 foot swimming beach or spend the night at the Lodge, in their cabins with gas log fireplaces of on one or their 200 camping sites. The Lodge also boasts a dining room, coffee shop, snack bar and gift shop along with an indoor gaming area, sauna, indoor and outdoor pools along with an array of tennis, volleyball and basketball courts. FDR’s New Deal to help get Americans back to work during the Great Depression. Built by hand, the lake, which is over 3,550 acres of water, now belongs to a system that control the mighty Muskingum River. They offer boating, swimming, camping and picnicking. The Seneca Lake Marina, offers a 399 horsepower limit boat ramp while the lake itself offers great fishing such as channel catfish and flat-head catfish and many more. Along the lake there are more that 500 campsites available as well as cabins to rent, picnic shelters, hiking trails, a playground and even an amphitheater. Seneca Lake is open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Park Rangers can be reached at 740-685-6013 for more information. The Wilds, as part of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, is a private and non-profit conservation area at 14000 International Road, Cumberland. The Visitor Center, dedicated by John Glenn, sits amongst 10,000 acres of reclaimed mine land and works to push conservations issues. Among their 26 different species, travelers can ride along ostriches, giraffes, African painted dogs, cheetahs and Bactrian camels to name a few. Visitors can come as part of a school tour, a family vacation or join in one of their educational summer camps. The Wilds also offers night hikes, horseback riding and zip lining or you can stay the night at their Lodge or at Nomad Ridge. Guernsey County is proud of it’s municipal parks. In fact it boasts over 12 parks county-wide. By far the two biggest are Cambridge City Park and Jackson Park in Byesville. Cambridge City Park is home to the Historic Armstrong Covered Bridge, dog park, City Lake, hiking trails, ball parks with the Cambridge City Pool adjacent. The park prides itself on the handicap accessible Challenger Field and the Rotary inspired handicap accessible playground equipment which includes a playground and swing that are wheel-chair friendly. And nothing says summer at the Cambridge City Park like the Parkside Tasty Treat, located at 900 McKinley Ave, and the Cambridge City Band which has been a staple in the community since it was formed 175 years ago, making it the oldest community band in the state of Ohio. Cambridge City Park is also the home of the Salt Fork Arts and Crafts Festival which was created in 1968 to enhance and promote Ohio arts. The festival also supplies visitors with demonstrations and live performances and even gives area students a chance to showcase

their artwork. This year’s festival will be Aug. 11 – Aug. 13. Surrounded by trees and the winding Wills Creek, the park is secluded and perfect for hosting summer events or picnicking. Open from dusk to dawn beginning in April and running through November, the park offers free Wi-Fi, basketball courts, volleyball and baseball as well as playground equipment for all ages. Christmas in Guernsey County. Cambridge takes Christmas very seriously. The people of Guernsey County have fully embraced the season and have come together to provide an experience like no other. Join in the Steeple Walk in early December for a self-guided tour of the houses of worship in downtown Cambridge. Or come for the Christmas Parade in mid-November. See decorated floats, trailers and horses join up with area marching bands to march down Wheeling Avenue to the Guernsey County Court House’s Candyland where kids of all ages can meet the one and only Santa Clause. The Courthouse is also home to the Cambridge Light Show which consists of 55,000 lights, three 20ft Christmas Trees and 60 animated displays with more added every year. The show runs from November 1 to January 1, every evening from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. To throw in a little history to your Yuletide, visit the Dickens Victorian Village. The Welcome Center is in the Historic Gomber House at 745 Steubenville Ave., and is home to the Curiosity Shop, The Imagination Station and The Victorian Tea Room which hosts morning teas on Saturdays during the holiday season. GUERNSEY COUNTY

T
hey say the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. It’s true of Ohio, it’s true of Guernsey County. With all that the county has to offer there are some places that only locals know about. They require taking the country back roads, twisting and turning until you find the “hidden treasures of Guernsey County.” The area has a long history, dating back to the first settlers who helped build up the county. Part of that was made possible from the Historic National Road, which stretches over 700 miles across multiple states, with 227.87 miles in Ohio alone. A detailed driving tour is available at the Guernsey County Visitors and Convention Bureau (800-933-5480) or visit ohionationalroad.org for a list of stops in Guernsey County. Stop at Henderysburg to see the birthplace of famed Hopalong Cassidy. See Clark House, a drover’s tavern at 66539 in Freeport or the Pennyroyal Opera House, still in operation today in Fairview. Old Washington has multiple stops on the National Road like Deep Cut and Hyde Hill Tavern. Make sure to stop at the Guernsey County Courthouse before heading over to the visitors bureau. Don’t forget to check out the Old National Road Yard Sale held every summer along Route 40. A few decades after the statehood of Ohio, war broke out among the states. As the North fought on, making headway in the South, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan decided to bring the war to the North. With over 2,000 soldiers he raided Indiana and Ohio in 1863 with the sole purpose of bringing as much destruction as possible and to keep the Union troops diverted. Today, the 557 mile long trail is now a Heritage Trail in Ohio with 56 interpretive signs and 600 specialized directional signs. The interpretive signs show historical information about the raid and describes scenes from the raid as it would have been 46

in 1863. A guide book is available for this traveling-exhibit where you do the traveling by contacting the Ohio History Connection at ohiohistory.org or by calling 614-297-2300. Downtown historic Cambridge has many of the original buildings from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, making it a very unique place to stop. Recently unearthed is an underground store front, a perfect setting for the Underground Tour of Cambridge. The Underground Tour is usually in September and starts at the building on the corner of North 7th Street and Wheeling Avenue where visitors a guided by a costumed interpreter through the history of this store front and building of yesteryear. There is also a Forgotten Places and Spaces Tour that departs from the Courthouse lawn on Saturday’s, March through November. Explore the unseen parts of downtown Cambridge, see the abandon ball rooms, an old doctors office and masonic temples, long forgotten. The proceeds of these tours benefit the historic preservation efforts in downtown Cambridge. While strolling downtown Cambridge, you may stumble onto the Farmer’s Market on Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m, from May till October. On Turner Avenue, with plenty of parking, people can find fresh, local produce, homemade wares and baked goods. Not in town on Fridays but still want to stroll through a farmer’s market? Be sure to check out Byesville’s, every Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., May through October in the town square. The Guernsey County Fairground also has a Farm and Flea Market. This larger market has locally grown produced, new and used items and a wide variety of antiques. This market meets at 335 Old National Road, Lore City on Fridays during the months of May through October from 8 a.m. to noon, and can be reached at 740-489-5888. One last hidden treasure is the Great Guernsey Trail which provides a secluded bike trail on what was once an old railroad that traveled from one end of the county to the other. Today, the trail provides six paved miles and one un-paved mile of low-grade path that is perfect for running, walking or biking. Just be sure to enjoy the beautiful views along the way. In summer, surrounding fields are often covered in wildflowers and in fall the trees burn bright with color. The trail also has six shelters along the trail and breeding boxes for the Indiana Brown Bat. Maybe fishing and swimming in Lake Erie is more your thing? Or glacial ridges? Perhaps sleeping in a yurt? Those are all things you can do in Ohio, in a state park, most of which are open year round. Here are 10 things you should know about Ohio’s state parks and the sights and accommodates they provide:

According to Jason Fallon, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, there are 74 state parks in the state, offering hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, camping, biking, horseback riding, disc golf and an array of other activities.Fifty-six of those parks have campgrounds, and nine have lodges or conference centers. While such overnight accommodations and related services carry a cost, there are no general admission or parking fees at Ohio’s state parks. According to Fallon, Ohio is one of only seven states nationally with such complementary access.

Ohio’s state parks are popular with in- and out-of-state visitors. While keeping tabs on exact attendance statistics is a bit problematic, given Ohio’s free access policy, Fallon said ODNR has counted more than 2.5 million overnight stays at state park campgrounds, cabins and lodges. 50

And the top five destinations for overnighters? Alum Creek, East Harbor, Hocking Hills, Indian Lake and Mohican state parks. 3. OLD MAN’S CAVE: If you want to explore caves and other geologic features, Hocking Hills State Park might be a good place to start. The 2,300-plus acres near Logan offer hiking trails to places like Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave and Rock House. There are gorges and cliffs and waterfalls. And there are two mountain bike trails available, according to ODNR. You’ll find maps and trail guides online at parks.ohiodnr.gov. 4. EAST HARBOR AND LAKE ERIE: Ohio operates a number of state park areas along its northern shore, notably East Harbor State Park near Sandusky, complete with campgrounds and a swimming beach. It’s also close to the Marblehead Lighthouse, another state park that, according to ODNR, “is home to the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes.” Not too far away, you can catch a ferry to Kelleys Island, with additional swimming and camping areas. There, you’ll also find the Glacial Grooves State Memorial, offering what the Kelleys Island Chamber calls “the largest and best accessible example of this geological phenomenon anywhere in the world” (online at KelleysIslandChamber.com). 5. BOGGED DOWN: Ohio has one bog island, located in Buckeye Lake near Cranberry You’ll find additional information on the ODNR website Point, that boasts rare orchids and carnivorous plants. You may notice some construction activities under way at parks this year. ODNR has launched numerous capital improvements across Ohio, including revamped campsites, restrooms and boat ramps. There will also be new playground equipment, new bridges, new trails and new water treatment facilities. Last year’s capital budget included more than $320 million for park improvements.

7. SPEAKING OF OVERNIGHTERS: State parks offer 514 cabins for overnight stays, including 293 operated by the state and 221 operated by concession groups. Also, there are 54 camper cabins, 18 cedar cabins and 16 yurts. Information about rates and reservations is posted on the ODNR website (parks.ohiodnr.gov).

AND SPEAKING OF CABINS: There aren’t any finished and ready for occupancy yet, but ODNR announced during last year’s Ohio State Fair that it had formed a partnership with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and the Ohio Department of Commerce to have prison inmates help build state park camper cabins. It’s part of a program that provides job training to inmates, helping them prepare for careers after their incarceration. “This innovative partnership creates an ideal situation for each of our agencies,” ODNR Director James Zehringer said in a released statement at the time. “ODNR continues to search for ways to provide quality amenities to guests enjoying our state parks. The camper cabins are one of our more popular facilities so of course we are excited for the opportunity to provide more of these assets.” The finished cabins should be available for visitors later this year. 9. STATE FAIR NOTE: While we’re talking about the State Fair, the state Controlling Board earlier this year OK’d $660,000-plus for improvements planned at the ODNR area at the state fairgrounds in Columbus. Plans call for “a new indoor air gun shooting range and archery range, [upgraded] buildings to improve family focused shooting instruction, and [a new] ‘fish house’ to provide fish filleting and cooking demonstrations,” according to documents, which added, “For thousands of fairgoers, the Natural Resources Park is a destination and may be their first experience with shooting, archery, and fishing, and this area strives to make this first exposure a positive experience.” Fallon added, “We will be able to accommodate more State Fair visitors and enhance their experience with the new archery/ air rifle building. The fish house will include a new and improved demonstration area as well.”

10. STATE FAIR POSTSCRIPT: The ODNR exhibits at the State Fair are worth a stop on their own. Located on the southeast corner of the fairgrounds, visitors can check yurts and cabins and other facilities offered at state parks, ask questions to a giant animatronic Smokey Bear, try their hand at kayaking and see bald eagles and other animals. A 71-foot fire tower was added last year. And Gov. John Kasich makes a point of stopping at the ODNR’s enclosed butterfly gardens after cutting the ribbon to open the annual event, taking place this year July 26-Aug. 6.
